Abstract:Background and Aims Roots and rhizomes are crucial for the adaptation of clonal plants to soil water gradients. Oryza longistaminata, a rhizomatous wild rice, is of particular interest for perennial rice breeding owing to its resilience in abiotic stress conditions. Although root responses to soil flooding are well studied, rhizome responses to water gradients remain underexplored. We hypothesize that physiological integration of Oryza longistaminata mitigates heterogeneous water-deficit stress through interconnected rhizomes, and both roots and rhizomes respond to contrasting water conditions. Methods We investigated the physiological integration between mother plants and ramets, measuring key photosynthetic parameters (photosynthetic and transpiration rates and stomatal conductance) using an infrared gas analyser. Moreover, root and rhizome responses to three water regimes (flooding, well watered and water deficit) were examined by measuring radial water loss and apparent permeance to O-2, along with histochemical and anatomical characterization. Key Results Our experiment highlights the role of physiological integration via interconnected rhizomes in mitigating water-deficit stress. Severing rhizome connections from mother plants or ramets exposed to water-deficit conditions led to significant decreases in key photosynthetic parameters, underscoring the importance of rhizome connections in bidirectional stress mitigation. Additionally, O. longistaminata rhizomes exhibited constitutive suberized and lignified apoplastic barriers, and such barriers were induced in roots in water stress. Anatomically, both rhizomes and roots respond in a similar manner to water gradients, showing smaller diameters in water-deficit conditions and larger diameters in flooding conditions. Conclusion Our findings indicate that physiological integration through interconnected rhizomes helps to alleviate water-deficit stress when either the mother plant or the ramet is experiencing water deficit, while the counterpart is in control conditions. Moreover, O. longistaminata can adapt to various soil water regimes by regulating anatomical and physiological traits of roots and rhizomes.

Abstract:Resistance traits of plants can be activated both at the damaged site and undamaged parts. Systemic resistance induced by local exogenous abscisic acid (ABA) application alleviated negative effect of low water availability on growth performance of clonal plant. However, timing of systemic resistance was poorly understood. Timing of systemic resistance refers to its activation and decay time within clonal network. Clonal fragment of Centella asiatica with four successive ramets (including first-oldest, second-older, third-old and fourth-young ramets) subjected to low water availability (20% soil moisture content) was used to explore effects of local exogenous ABA application on the timing of resistance activation and decay. Systemic resistance activated by local exogenous ABA application after 4 days remained at least 28 days. Compared with control, biomass accumulation of whole clonal fragment, root biomass and ratio of belowground to aboveground biomass significantly increased by local exogenous ABA application after 28 days. It is suggested that rapid activation and delay of resistance response induced by local exogenous ABA application within clonal network may improve fitness of clonal plant subjected to abiotic stress.

Abstract:BACKGROUND AND AIMS One of the special properties of clonal plants is the capacity for physiological integration, which can increase plant performance through mechanisms such as resource sharing and co-ordinated phenotypic plasticity when plants grow in microsites with contrasting resource availabilities. However, many clonal plants are colonized by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). Since AMF are likely to reduce contrasts in effective resource levels, they could also reduce these effects of clonal integration on plasticity and performance in heterogeneous environments. METHODS To test this hypothesis, pairs of connected and disconnected ramets of the stoloniferous herb Trifolium repens were grown. One ramet in a pair was given high light and low nutrients while the other ramet was given high nutrients and low light. The pairs were inoculated with zero, one or five species of AMF. KEY RESULTS Pairs of ramets grown without AMF developed division of labour and benefited from resource sharing, as indicated by effects of connection on allocation to roots, accumulation of mass, and ramet production. Inoculation with five species of AMF significantly reduced these effects of connection, both by inhibiting them in ramets given high nutrients and inducing them in ramets given high light. Inoculation with one species of AMF also reduced some effects of connection, but generally to a lesser degree. CONCLUSIONS The results show that AMF can significantly modify the effects of clonal integration on the plasticity and performance of clonal plants in heterogeneous environments. In particular, AMF may partly replace the effects and benefits of clonal integration in low-nutrient habitats, possibly more so where species richness of AMF is high. This provides the first test of interaction between colonization by AMF and physiological integration in a clonal plant, and a new example of how biotic and abiotic factors could interact to determine the ecological importance of clonal growth.
Clonal Integration Increases Performance of Ramets of the Fern Diplopterygium Glaucum in an Evergreen Forest in Southeastern China

Abstract:Physiological integration is a major ecological advantage of clonal growth in angiosperms. Clonal growth is also common in pteridophytes, but almost no study has tested whether clonal integration increases performance in ramets of pteridophytes in natural populations. To test this hypothesis and also whether the positive effect of integration is greater on smaller ramets, we severed the connecting rhizomes of individual ramets of the common, understory fern Diplopterygium glaucum in an evergreen, broadleaf forest in southeastern China. In another experiment, we severed rhizomes around the edges of small plots each containing several ramets. After 19.5 weeks, survival was 100% in intact individual ramets but only 27% in severed ones. Among surviving ramets, final dry mass and lamina mass were also less in severed than in intact ramets, though stalk, rhizome, and root mass and maximum quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm) were not reduced. Individual ramets with fewer stalk nodes had lower dry mass but were not more affected by severing than ramets with more stalk nodes. Severance around the edge of plots did not significantly affect the combined final mass of the ramets within a plot. We conclude that clonal integration can have significant positive effects on both survival and growth of individual ramets of ferns in natural populations.

Abstract:Drawing on a novel experimental design, our research analyzes the possible coordination of resources between rooting and nonrooting ramets, and the clonal integration mechanism work in this process relating to the specific species. It is naturally common that different proportions of ramets in a clone lose rooting conditions due to habitat stress or obstacles, which potentially affects the overall growth of the clonal plant to different extents. However, so far, little attention has been paid to such phenomena and much less to the underlying ecological mechanisms. Taking Zoysia japonica as material, through an experiment with two nutrition levels in the habitats and five rooting ramet proportions in the clones, the impacts of proportions of rooting ramets in the clone on the overall growth were tested and the ecological mechanisms were analyzed. The results showed that there was no significant difference in the total clonal biomasses among the clones with five rooting ramet proportions under high and low nutrition levels, except for that with 0% rooting ramet proportion. Under both high and low nutrition levels, the lower rooting ramet proportions (0% and 25%) in the clones significantly decreased the number of the so‐called A‐ and B‐ramets, root biomass, stolon length per unit biomass, and root–shoot ratio, but significantly increased the stolon biomass of the clones. Stolon elongation was promoted under high nutrient level, and biomass allocations to stolons and roots increased under low nutrition levels. A‐ramet biomasses accounted for about 50% and 30% of the total biomasses of the whole clone under high and low nutrition levels, respectively. These results might be reasonably explained in terms of clonal integration, compensatory growth, division of labor, and bet‐hedging strategy.

Abstract:Clonal plants are able to support the growth of their ramets in stressful environments via clonal integration between the ramets. However, it remains unclear whether the developmental status of stressed ramets affects the role of clonal integration. Here, we explored the effects of clonal integration at both the ramet level and the whole clonal fragment level when the apical ramets (younger) and basal ramets (older) were subjected to different concentrations of cadmium contamination. We grew pairs of ramets of Alternanthera philoxeroides, which were connected or disconnected by stolon between them. The apical and basal ramets were either uncontaminated or individually subjected to Cd contamination at concentrations of 5 mg kg-1 and 50 mg kg-1, respectively. Our results showed that clonal integration significantly promoted the growth of apical ramets subjected to Cd contamination. More importantly, under high Cd treatment, clonal integration also had a significant positive effect on the fitness of the whole clonal fragments. However, clonal integration did not affect plant growth when basal ramets were subjected to Cd contamination. Our study reveals the influence of the developmental status of stressed ramets on the role of clonal integration in heterogeneous heavy metal stress environments, suggesting that clonal integration may facilitate the spread of A. philoxeroides in Cd-contaminated habitats.

Abstract:Abstract Aims Resource sharing among connected ramets (i.e., clonal integration) is one of the distinct traits of clonal plants. Clonal integration confers Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) a strong adaptability to different environmental conditions. But the mechanisms of how clonal integration makes Moso bamboo has better performance are still poorly understood. In this study, acropetal and basipetal translocation of photosynthates between Moso bamboo ramets were analyzed separately, to investigate how clonal fragments obtain higher benefits under heterogeneous N conditions. Methods Clonal fragments of Moso bamboo consisting of two interconnected mother-daughter ramets were used, each of the ramets was subjected to either with or without N addition. The acropetal and basipetal translocation of 13C-photosynthates were separated via single-ramet 13CO2-labeling. Important Findings Mother ramets translocated more 13C-photosynthates to daughter ramets with N addition, and the translocation of 13C-photosynthates to mother ramets was more pronounced when daughter ramets were treated with N addition. The 13C-photosynthates that were translocated from mother ramets without and with N addition were mainly invested in the leaves and roots of daughter ramets with N addition, from daughter ramets with N addition were mainly invested in the leaves and roots of mother ramets with and without N addition, respectively. These results suggest that mother ramets preferentially invest more resources in nutrient-rich daughter ramets, and that daughter ramets serve as efficient resource acquisition sites to specialize in acquiring abundant resources based on the resource conditions of mother ramets. Clonal plants can improve their resource acquisition efficiency and maximize the overall performance through this way.

Abstract:Partial root-zone drying (PRD) is an effective water-saving irrigation strategy that improves stress tolerance and facilitates efficient water use in several crops. It has long been considered that abscisic acid (ABA)-dependent drought resistance may be involved during partial root-zone drying. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying PRD-mediated stress tolerance remain unclear. It's hypothesized that other mechanisms might contribute to PRD-mediated drought tolerance. Here, rice seedlings were used as a research model and the complex transcriptomic and metabolic reprogramming processes were revealed during PRD, with several key genes involved in osmotic stress tolerance identified by using a combination of physiological, transcriptome, and metabolome analyses. Our results demonstrated that PRD induces transcriptomic alteration mainly in the roots but not in the leaves and adjusts several amino-acid and phytohormone metabolic pathways to maintain the balance between growth and stress response compared to the polyethylene glycol (PEG)-treated roots. Integrated analysis of the transcriptome and metabolome associated the co-expression modules with PRD-induced metabolic reprogramming. Several genes encoding the key transcription factors (TFs) were identified in these co-expression modules, highlighting several key TFs, including TCP19, WRI1a, ABF1, ABF2, DERF1, and TZF7, involved in nitrogen metabolism, lipid metabolism, ABA signaling, ethylene signaling, and stress regulation. Thus, our work presents the first evidence that molecular mechanisms other than ABA-mediated drought resistance are involved in PRD-mediated stress tolerance. Overall, our results provide new insights into PRD-mediated osmotic stress tolerance, clarify the molecular regulation induced by PRD, and identify genes useful for further improving water-use efficiency and/or stress tolerance in rice.
Effects of clonal integration and nutrient availability on the growth of Glechoma longituba under heterogenous light conditions

Abstract:Introduction: Clonal integration of connected ramets within clones is an important ecological advantage. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that the effects of clonal integration on performance of donor and recipient ramets when one resource is heterogeneous can be influenced by the availability of another resource of donor ramets. Methods: We conducted a greenhouse experiment on the widespread, perennial herb Glechoma longituba . Clonal fragments consisting of pairs of connected ramets were grown for seven weeks. The younger, apical ramets were exposed under 30% or 100% light condition and the older, basal ramets were treated with three levels of nutrients. The connections between ramets were either severed or left intact. 30% light condition negatively affected the growth of apical ramets, basal ramets and the whole fragments. Results: Clonal integration significantly increased the growth of apical ramets, but decreased the growth of the basal ramets. Medium and high level nutrient availability of basal ramets significantly increased the growth of apical ramets, basal ramets and the whole fragments. At the high nutrient level, the reduction in growth of basal ramets from clonal integration was decreased, but the growth responses of apical ramets and the whole fragments to clonal integration were not influenced by nutrient availability. Conclusion: The results suggested that clonal integration was benefit to the growth of apical ramets of Glechoma longituba but at the cost of reducing the growth of basal ramets. Although the high nutrient level could reduce the cost that clonal integration brought to the unshaded basal ramets, but could not increase the benefit that clonal integration brought to the shaded apical ramets and whole fragment.

Abstract:Clonal integration can benefit the performance and fitness of clonal plants in heterogeneous environments. Although trade-offs of sexual and asexual reproduction are key life-history strategies to assess the plant fitness and adaptive abilities, the effects of clonal integration on these is less studied. In this study, a pot experiment was conducted to test how reproductive strategies were affected by clonal integration of clonal plant species Leymus chinensis growing in heterogeneous saline-alkali soils. The results showed that clonal integration had no significant effect on total biomass of whole clone of L. chinensis. The total biomass of younger ramets was higher (+32.8%, P < 0.001) under integration condition, while at the cost of the older ramets (-21.7%, P < 0.001). Moreover, the ratio of ear biomass to clonal growth organs (CGO) biomass was slightly reduced by 31.7% (P = 0.09). For younger ramets, clonal integration enhances biomass allocation towards CGO, while reducing allocation towards ear growth, and the ratio of ear/CGO biomass was significantly reduced by 39.1% (P < 0.01). Results indicated that clonal integration reduced the ratio of ear to clonal growth organ biomass of whole clone, and more biomass was allocated to younger ramets for spatial expansion. Clonal integration influenced reproductive strategies of L. chinensis, while its impact is not depended on nutrient levels or defoliation interference. The study emphasized the significance of clonal integration in promoting the growth of offspring ramets and, consequently, enhancing their abilities to expand rapidly. It could enhance the spatial expansion of L. chinensis on a site scale and provide high potential for restoration of patchy degraded grassland where it is dominant.

Abstract:Abscisic acid (ABA) is one of the most important phytohormones involved in stress responses in plants. However, knowledge of the effect on ABA distribution and transport of water stress at different sites on the plant is limited. In this study, water stress imposed on peanut leaves or roots by treatment with PEG 6000 is termed “leaf stress” or “root stress”, respectively. Immunoenzyme localization technolony was first used to detect ABA distribution in peanut. Under root stress, ABA biosynthesis and distribution level were all more pronounced in root than in leaf. However, ABA transport and the ability to induce stomatal closure were still better in leaf than in root during root stress; However, ABA biosynthesis initially increased in leaf, then rapidly accumulated in the vascular cambium of leaves and induced stomatal closure under leaf stress; ABA produced in root tissues was also transported to leaf tissues to maintain stomatal closure. The vascular system was involved in the coordination and integration of this complex regulatory mechanism for ABA signal accumulation. Water stress subject to root or leaf results in different of ABA biosynthesis and transport ability that trigger stoma close in peanut.

Abstract:Clonal integration between connected ramets within genets can increase their survival and growth. Different clonal plants form ramets in a variety of ways, and a number of species form more than one type of ramets. We tested for the first time whether effects of clonal integration can differ between different types of ramets within the same species. We compared effects of severing connections between ramets (i.e. preventing clonal integration) on the survival and growth of ramets produced along rhizomes and at the tips of fronds in a natural population of the fern Bolbitis heteroclita in a tropical seasonal rainforest in southwestern China. Severance strongly reduced the survival of both rhizome-derived and frond-derived ramets but reduced survival and the growth of surviving ramets much more in rhizome-than in frond-derived ramets. Rhizome-derived ramets were larger, allocated less dry mass to belowground structures, and had greater cross-sectional area of connecting vascular tissue. These results suggest that clonal integration increases performance of both rhizome-and frond-derived ramets of B. heteroclita, but that benefits of integration are greater in rhizome-derived ramets. This may be due to greater conductance in the connections to rhizome-derived ramets.

Abstract:The stress phytohormone, abscisic acid (ABA), plays important roles in facilitating plants to survive and grow well under a wide range of stress conditions. Previous gene expression studies mainly focused on plant responses to short-term ABA treatment, but the effect of sustained ABA treatment and their difference are poorly studied. Here, we treated plants with ABA for 1 h or 9 d, and our genome-wide analysis indicated the differentially regulated genes under the two conditions were tremendously different. We analyzed other hormones’ signaling changes by using their whole sets of known responsive genes as reporters and integrating feedback regulation of their biosynthesis. We found that, under short-term ABA treatment, signaling outputs of growth-promoting hormones, brassinosteroids and gibberellins, and a biotic stress-responsive hormone, jasmonic acid, were significantly inhibited, while auxin and ethylene signaling outputs were promoted. However, sustained ABA treatment repressed cytokinin and gibberellin signaling, but stimulated auxin signaling. Using several sets of hormone-related mutants, we found candidates in corresponding hormonal signaling pathways, including receptors or transcription regulators, are essential in responding to ABA. Our findings indicate interactions of ABA-dependent stress signals with hormones at different levels are involved in plants to survive under transient stress and to adapt to continuing stressful environments.
Abiotic stress modulates root patterning via ABA-regulated microRNA expression in the endodermis initials

Abstract:Patterning of the root xylem into protoxylem (PX) and metaxylem is regulated by auxin-cytokinin signaling and microRNA miR165a/166b-mediated suppression of genes encoding Class III HOMEODOMAIN LEU-ZIPPER (HD-ZIPIII) proteins. We found that, in Arabidopsis, osmotic stress via core abscisic acid (ABA) signaling in meristematic endodermal cells induces differentiation of PX in radial and longitudinal axes in association with increased VND7 expression. Similarly, in tomato, ABA enhanced PX differentiation longitudinally and radially, indicating an evolutionarily conserved mechanism. ABA increased expression of miR165a/166b and reduced expression of the miR165a/166b repressor ZWILLE (ZLL) (also known as ARGONAUTE10), resulting in reduced levels of all five HD-ZIPIII RNAs. ABA treatments failed to induce additional PX files in a miR165a/166b-resistant PHB mutant, phb1-d, and in scr and shr mutants, in which miR165a/166b expression is strongly reduced. Thus, ABA regulates xylem patterning and maturation via miR165a/166b-regulated expression of HD-ZIPIII mRNAs and associated VND7 levels. In lateral root initials, ABA induced an increase in miR165a levels in endodermal precursors and inhibited their reduction in the future quiescent center specifically at pre-emergence stage. Hence, ABA-induced inhibition of lateral root is associated with reduced HD-ZIPIII levels.

Abstract:Recently, considerable attention has been paid to the invasion of the clonal plant Spartina alterniflora into coastal wetlands at lower elevations. In this experiment, we tested whether clonal integration improved flood tolerance in S. alterniflora daughter ramets. Daughter ramets at two growth stages (young and old ramets) were flooded to water levels of 0, 9 and 18cm above the soil surface, and the rhizomes between mother and daughter ramets were either severed or left intact. Biomasses of connected ramets grown in controls or in shallow and deep water treatments were 119%, 108% and 149% higher in the old ramet group than those of severed ramets, respectively, whereas they were 3.0, 3.3 and 11.2 times higher in the young ramet group, respectively. At the end of the experimental period, the shoot height, connected with young ramets, in shallow and deep water treatments increased by 19% and 26%, respectively, over that in the control treatments, whereas the old ramets increased by 11% and 39%, respectively. In contrast, the shoot height of the severed young ramets was 27% and 26% lower in shallow and deep water treatments than in the control treatment, respectively. However, the shoot height of the severed old ramets remained constant with increasing water depth. We conclude that clonal integration enhances the flood tolerance of S. alterniflora daughter ramets, and the trait of clonal integration plays more important roles in severe flooding stress conditions and at early growth stages.
Root-derived long-distance signals trigger ABA synthesis and enhance drought resistance in Arabidopsis

Abstract:Vascular plants have evolved intricate long-distance signaling mechanisms to cope with environmental stress, with reactive oxygen species (ROS) emerging as pivotal systemic signals in plant stress responses. However, the exact role of ROS as root-to-shoot signals in the drought response has not been determined. In this study, we reveal that compared with wild-type plants, ferric reductase defective 3 ( frd3 ) mutants exhibit enhanced drought resistance concomitant with elevated NCED3 transcript levels and ABA contents in leaves as well as increased hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) levels in roots and leaves. Grafting experiments distinctly illustrate that drought resistance can be conferred by the frd3 rootstock regardless of the scion genotype, indicating that long-distance signals originating from frd3 roots promote an increase in ABA levels in leaves. Intriguingly, the drought resistance conferred by the frd3 mutant rootstock is weakened by the CAT2 -overexpressing scion, suggesting that H 2 O 2 may be involved in the long-distance signaling. Moreover, the results of comparative transcriptome and proteome analyses support the drought resistance phenotype of the frd3 mutant. Taken together, our findings substantiate the notion that frd3 root-derived long-distance signals trigger ABA synthesis in leaves and enhance drought resistance, providing new evidence for root-to-shoot long-distance signaling in the drought response of plants.

Contrasting Effects of Plant-Soil Feedbacks on Growth and Morphology of Two Clonal Plants

Abstract:AimSoil abiotic and biotic conditions are often spatially variable, challenging plants with a heterogeneous environment consisting of favorable and unfavorable patches of soil. Many stoloniferous clonal plants can escape from unfavorable patches by elongating stolon internodes, but aggregate in favorable ones through shortening stolon internodes. However, whether these plants can use their stolons to respond to plant-soil feedbacks (PSFs) is largely unknown. MethodsIn the conditioning phase, we grew either Hydrocotyle vulgaris or Glechoma longituba clonal plants separately in mesocosms to condition bulk soil. In the feedback phase, we grew connected mother and daughter ramets of each species in soil inoculated with the unsterilized or sterilized soil conditioned by conspecifics. We grew the plants for 12 weeks and measured the growth of the mother and daughter ramets separately. ResultsThe daughter ramets of H. vulgaris produced more biomass but shorter stolon internodes when grown in soil with sterilized inocula than with unsterilized inocula. However, no difference was found between the daughter ramets of G. longituba grown in soil with unsterilized and sterilized inocula. For both species, no significant difference was found between the mother ramet or between the daughter ramets when the mother ramet was grown in soil with sterilized and unsterilized inocula. ConclusionsThe daughter ramets rather than the mother ramet of H. vulgaris experienced negative biotic PSFs. However, PSF had no effects on the daughter or mother ramet of G. longituba. Moreover, physiological integration or plasticity in stolon internode lengths cannot help H. vulgaris alleviate the negative PSFs.
Physiological integration between Bermudagrass ramets improves overall salt resistance under heterogeneous salt stress

Abstract:Connected ramets of colonal plants often suffer from different environmental conditions such as light, nutrient, and stress. Colonal Bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon [L.] Pers.) can form interconnected ramets and this connection facilitates the tolerance to abiotic stress, which is a kind of physiological integration. However, how bermudagrass responds to heterogeneously distributed salt stress needs to be further elucidated. Here, we demonstrated that severance of stolons aggravated the damage of salt-stressed ramets, displaying higher relative electrolytic leakage (EL), lower content of chlorophyll, higher accumulation of Na+ , and serious oxidative damages. This finding implied the positive effects of the physiological integration of bermudagrass on salt tolerance. The unstressed ramets connected with the stressed one were mildly injured, implying the supporting and sacrifice function of the unstressed ramets. Physiological integration did not mediate the translocation of Na+ among ramets, but induced a higher expression of salt overly sensitive (SOS) genes in the stressed ramets, consequently reducing the accumulation of Na+ in leaves and roots. In addition, physiological integration upregulated the genes expression and enzymes activity of catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POD) in both stressed and unstressed ramets. This granted a stronger antioxidant ability of the whole clonal plants under salt stress. Enhanced Na+ transfer and increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging are mechanisms that likely contribute to the physiological integration leading to the salt tolerance of bermudagrass.

Abstract:BackgroundRoots are an attractive system for genomic and post-genomic studies of NaCl responses, due to their primary importance to agriculture, and because of their relative structural and biochemical simplicity. Excellent genomic resources have been established for the study of Arabidopsis roots, however, a comprehensive microarray analysis of the root transcriptome following NaCl exposure is required to further understand plant responses to abiotic stress and facilitate future, systems-based analyses of the underlying regulatory networks.ResultsWe used microarrays of 70-mer oligonucleotide probes representing 23,686 Arabidopsis genes to identify root transcripts that changed in relative abundance following 6 h, 24 h, or 48 h of hydroponic exposure to 150 mM NaCl. Enrichment analysis identified groups of structurally or functionally related genes whose members were statistically over-represented among up- or down-regulated transcripts. Our results are consistent with generally observed stress response themes, and highlight potentially important roles for underappreciated gene families, including: several groups of transporters (e.g. MATE, LeOPT1-like); signalling molecules (e.g. PERK kinases, MLO-like receptors), carbohydrate active enzymes (e.g. XTH18), transcription factors (e.g. members of ZIM, WRKY, NAC), and other proteins (e.g. 4CL-like, COMT-like, LOB-Class 1). We verified the NaCl-inducible expression of selected transcription factors and other genes by qRT-PCR.ConclusionMicorarray profiling of NaCl-treated Arabidopsis roots revealed dynamic changes in transcript abundance for at least 20% of the genome, including hundreds of transcription factors, kinases/phosphatases, hormone-related genes, and effectors of homeostasis, all of which highlight the complexity of this stress response. Our identification of these transcriptional responses, and groups of evolutionarily related genes with either similar or divergent transcriptional responses to stress, will facilitate mapping of regulatory networks and extend our ability to improve salt tolerance in plants.
