Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To optimize the inclusion technology of cinnamon volatile oii-β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex and to investigate the effects of the type of penetration enhancer on the permeation rate of inclusion compounds.METHODS: The experiment was carried out in accordance with L_9(3~4)orthogonal design table;the 3 factors affecting saturated solucion were investigated,and the formula was optimized with steady transdermal permeation rate as evaluation index.With the skin of SD male rat as media,the penetration experiments in vitro were performed on modified Franz diffusion cells.The amount of drug penetration concentration of inclusion compound was determined by HPLC.RESULTS:The optimized inclusion condi- tion was as follows:cinnamon oil:β-cyciodextrin=1:5(mL:g),stirring for 2 hour at 50℃;after addition of the penetration enhancers-DMSO and 1,2-trimethylene glycol,the enhancement ratios were 1.38 and 1.65 respectively(in ,some cases,the penetration rate was decreased).CONCLUSION:The inclusion technology is simple,convenient and practical,and by which transformation of dosage form of cinnamon volatile oil was achieved.β-CD inclusion compound is expected to become a new transdermal cinnamon delivery system.
Preparation and Characterization of Pectin-Based Edible Coating Agent Encapsulating Carvacrol/hpβcd Inclusion Complex for Inhibiting Fungi

Abstract:In this study, the pectin-based edible coatings encapsulating carvacrol/2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex (CAR/HPβCD-IC) were fabricated and their antifungal activities were investigated. The inclusion complex of CAR/HPβCD was demonstrated to be successfully synthesized by the characterization of UV–vis spectroscopy, fluorescence emission spectroscopy, FT-IR, 1H NMR, TGA and DSC. The fluorescence emission spectra analysis suggested that stoichiometric ratio of carvacrol and HPβCD for forming the inclusion complex was 1:1. The aqueous solubility and thermal stability of carvacrol were significantly enhanced after inserting into HPβCD cavity. Furthermore, the inclusion complex exhibited strong antifungal activities against pathogens of Botrytis cinerea and Alternaria alternata. On the other hand, an edible active coating was prepared by the addition of CAR/HPβCD-IC into pectin matrix. The steady rheology results of film-coatings indicated that the apparent viscosity of edible coatings was decreased with the addition of CAR/HPβCD-IC. In contrast, CAR/HPβCD-IC increased the thermal stability of pectin. In addition, the pectin/CAR/HPβCD-IC coating as an active packaging material suppressed the colony growth of B. cinerea and A. alternata in vitro. Results from the present study demonstrated that the pectin-based edible coating encapsulating CAR/HPβCD-IC was a promising coating material for food preservation.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to explore the film-forming properties of cinnamon essential oil (CEO) and chitosan (CS) and the effect of their composite coating on postharvest apple diseases. The results demonstrated that the composite coating exhibits favorable film-forming properties at CEO concentrations below 4% (v/v). The effectiveness of the composite coating in disease control can be attributed to two factors: the direct inhibitory activity of CEO against pathogens in vitro and the induced resistance triggered by CS on the fruits. Importantly, the incorporation of CEO did not interfere with the induction of resistance by CS in harvested apples. However, it is noteworthy that the inhibitory effect of the CS–CEO composite coating on apple diseases diminished over time. Therefore, a key aspect of enhancing the preservation ability of fruits is improving the controlled release properties of CEO within CS coatings. This will enable a sustained and prolonged antimicrobial effect, thereby bolstering the fruit preservation capabilities of the composite coatings.

Abstract:Application of hydrophobic coatings, such as carnauba wax nanoemulsions, combined with natural antimicrobials, has been demonstrated to be an effective solution in extending the shelf life of fruits. The present study evaluated the effectiveness of carnauba wax nanoemulsion (CWN) coatings containing free or encapsulated with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) essential oils of Syzigium aromaticum (CEO) and Mentha spicata (MEO) for the post-harvest conservation of papaya fruit. The chemical composition of the essential oils (EOs) was analyzed using GC-MS. Subsequently, coatings incorporating free and encapsulated EOs were prepared and applied to papaya fruit. Fruit was evaluated for post-harvest quality parameters during 15 days of storage. Clove essential oil presented as main compounds eugenol (89.73%), spearmint and carvone (68.88%), and limonene (20.34%). The observed reduction in weight loss in coated fruit can be attributed to the formation of a physical barrier provided by the coating. Compared to the control group, which experienced the highest weight loss of 24.85%, fruit coated with CWN and CWN-MEO:β-CD exhibited significantly lower weight loss percentages of only 5.78% and 7.5%, respectively. Compared to the control group, which exhibited a release of ethylene at a rate of 1.3 μg kg−1 h−1, fruit coated with CWN, CWN-MEO:β-CD, and CWN-MEO coatings demonstrated a lower ethylene release rate at 0.7 μg kg−1 h−1. Although the physical-chemical properties of papayas, including pH, Brix, titratable acidity, color, and texture, remained largely unchanged during storage with the coatings, analysis of incidence and severity of papaya post-harvest deterioration revealed that coatings containing essential oils effectively acted as antifungals in the fruit. Microscopy images showed that CWN and CWN-MEO:β-CD coatings are more uniform compared to the others. The edible coatings, especially CWN and CWN-MEO: β-CD, can act as antimicrobial coatings on papaya fruit, increasing their conservation during post-harvest storage.

Abstract:Papaya is a fruit of great importance worldwide. However, significant losses during postharvest have been reported, which can be minimized by applying lipid nanoemulsions as edible coatings associated with natural antimicrobial compounds. These coatings provide a barrier to gases and water vapor, in addition to improving mechanical properties, thereby delaying natural senescence and minimizing deterioration by phytopathogens during storage. The aim of this study was to investigate the preservation potential of papaya fruits treated with an edible coating based on an association between carnauba wax nanoemulsion (CWN) and Cymbopogon martinii essential oil (CEO). Coatings formulated with CWN and/or CEO were applied to papaya fruits, and resulted in late ripening during the 12-day storage period, without negatively affecting postharvest fruit quality parameters. The coatings reduced weight loss and maintained firmness, in addition to delaying changes in fruit color during storage. Coatings formulated with CWN + CEO were the most efficient formulations in reducing the incidence and severity of fruit rots during storage. CWN coatings incorporating CEO present additional functionalities in maintaining postharvest quality parameters of papaya fruits.

Abstract:Abstract Advances in developmental biology have shown that monozygous twins may not be as phenotypically identical as once believed, and the mechanisms responsible for such differences are now becoming clearer. Whether such phenotypic differences are capable of triggering graft rejection of an organ transplanted between identical twins remains unknown but the risks seem low, and long-term transplant outcome is excellent. Available evidence to guide immunosuppressive therapy in this setting is limited but a prudent approach would include the use of steroids together with a calcineurin inhibitor after transplantation. However, once the inevitable inflammatory response associated with transplant surgery has resolved, cautious reduction and eventually withdrawal of immunosuppression should be possible.

Abstract:Summary This study investigates the development of Poly‐vinyl alcohol (PVA) and essential oil‐based biocomposite films incorporating halloysite nanotubes (HNT) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) as reinforcement materials for the packaging of papaya fruits to extend their postharvest shelf‐life. The fabrication process involves the dispersion of filler materials within the PVA polymer matrix, followed by the casting of the films using the solvent‐evaporation technique. The CNC isolated from the papaya peel exhibited rod‐like structures that were confirmed in the morphological studies. The films reinforced with HNT and CNC (5 wt%) had enhanced mechanical properties and exhibited a tensile strength of ~64.40 MPa. The findings of the study demonstrate that the fruits packed with biocomposite materials containing HNTs and CNCs as reinforcements and lemongrass essential oil as active material showed better performance when compared to the control. The edible quality and the storage life of the papaya fruits (TSS, firmness and weight loss %) under investigation, were extended by 14 days at ambient temperature (25 ± 2 °C) and relative humidity (80 – 85 %), thus improving the postharvest shelf‐life of harvested papayas. Therefore, PVA‐based active packaging film prepared with lemongrass essential oil, HNTs and CNCs has great potential for the preservation of papaya during postharvest storage.

Abstract:The postharvest losses of papaya fruits are important concerns during storage, shipping and marketing; the causes of these postharvest losses include microbial infestation, temperature, inappropriate handling and other factors. Which can be decreased by using edible coatings that have enhanced quality and have a longer shelf life. The effects of three different coating materials-aloe vera gel, ascorbic acid and chitosan on the shelf life and qualitative parameters of papaya fruits that were maintained at room temperature for a period of 15 days were investigated. When compared to fruits that have not been coated, fruits that have been coated with aloe vera gel, ascorbic acid and chitosan retain the original values for all of the qualitative parameters, including total soluble solids (9.9), titratable acidity (0.670 %), ascorbic acid (67.125 100 g/mg), TSS: acid ratio (23.116 percent), total sugar (0.119 %), reducing sugar (24.570 %) and non-reducing. According to the findings of this investigation, the combination of aloe vera gel (50%), chitosan (1%) and ascorbic acid (1%) has the potential to lengthen the shelf life of papaya fruits while maintaining their nutritional qualities, which is significant for the purposes of commercial storage, transportation and sales.

Abstract:Natural preservatives such as cinnamaldehyde (CIN) are garnering increasing interest to replace their synthetic counterparts in maintaining fruit freshness and safety. However, their long-term effectiveness and widespread application have been greatly limited due to high volatility and potent aroma. To address these challenges, we developed a viable and simple strategy to prepare a multifunctional active coating for fruit preservation by incorporating host-guest inclusion complex of CIN and 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) CIN@HP-β-CD into hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural polysaccharide with exceptional film-forming properties. The as-prepared HA/CIN@HP-β-CD coatings exhibited universal surface affinity, excellent antimicrobial performance, and satisfactory antioxidant properties with no potential toxicity. Release kinetic studies have demonstrated that CIN in the coating is continuously and slowly released. Furthermore, freshness preservation experiments on bananas and fresh-cut apples demonstrated that the developed coating is effective in preserving the color of fruit, decreasing the weight loss rate, preventing the microorganism's growth, and significantly extending the period of freshness, exhibiting the potential for application in fruit preservation.

Abstract:Papaya (Carica papaya L.) is a valuable economic crop that is widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions but has a short storage and shelf life. Exploring effective strategies to improve the postharvest quality of papaya is important. This study explored the effect of humidity-triggered controlled-release 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) sheets on the postharvest quality of papaya fruit. ‘Rainbow’ papayas underwent cold storage at 10 ± 0.5 °C, RH 85% ± 2% for 14 days, and then were transferred to 20 ± 0.5 °C, RH 85% ± 2% for 10 days to simulate shelf life. The 1-MCP sheets were cut into different sizes and placed in storage containers in advance to create corresponding concentrations at 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 ppm. Results showed that 1-MCP treatment inhibited fruit softening, and reduced weight loss and peel color deterioration without causing any physiological disorders. The 1.0–2.0 ppm 1-MCP-treated fruit received the highest score for papaya flavor and sweetness respectively and the lowest score for off-flavor. The humidity-triggered controlled-release 1-MCP sheets are effective and convenient, and they can serve as an important tool for regulating postharvest papaya ripening with economic benefits.

Abstract:Papaya fruit is a climacteric fruit that undergoes physical and chemical changes very quickly during storage. The edible coating is one method that can extend the shelf life of minimally processed fruit such as papaya. To improve the effect of edible the mechanical properties and functional value of edible coatings, black tea was added. The research aims to evaluate the application of edible coating from fish gelatin-chitosan enriched with black to the physicochemical characterization of the minimally processed papaya. The research was conducted through the extraction of tuna skin gelatin using the acid-base method. Furthermore, the preparation of edible coating solutions based on chitosan, gelatin, glycerol, and black tea with different concentrations of 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15%. The edible coating solution that has been obtained is then applied to minimally processed papaya fruit and stored for 1, 4, 7, and 10 days to determine the effect of edible coating on the physical, chemical and microbiological characteristics of papaya fruit. The results showed that the addition of black tea extract concentrations of 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% had no significant effect on the color change of the resulting solution (p>0.05), while the viscosity and pH occurred during the addition of the concentration to the coating solution which could eat (p<0.05). Edible coating can suppress the decrease in weight loss and papaya texture. The chemical properties of minimally processed papaya such as pH, total dissolved solids, total titrated acid, antioxidant activity, and total carotenoids increased due to the ripening process and the effect of dissolved substances contained in the edible layer during storage. Total plate count (TPC) showed that edible coating treatment with the addition of black tea extract was able to suppress microbial growth during storage.

Abstract:A sporadic case of Hallervorden-Spatz Syndrome was diagnosed before death. The diagnosis was made on clinical manifestations and histopathology of the tissue fragments obtained from the globus pallidus by stereotaxic brain biopsy. The involvement of thoracolumbar spinal cord is discussed. The cranial computed tomography showed caudate atrophy with bicaudate index (CC/OTcc) of 0.2, and the quotient FH/CC of 1.43, which were indistinguishable from Huntington's disease.

Abstract:A chitosan-based nanocomposite film (CSC) was developed by mixing chitosan (CS, 2 %, v / v ) and copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs, 500 μg∙mL −1 ) synthesized using Alpinia officinarum extract for the safe storage of mango fruit. The effects of CuO NPs on the morphological, mechanical, thermal, physical and antifungal properties of the CS films and postharvest quality of mango fruit were determined. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis confirmed that CuO NPs were uniformly dispersed into the CS matrix. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) profiles showed that intermolecular H-bondings occurred between CS and CuO NPs, accompanied by decreased crystallinity and increased amorphous structure. In comparison to the pure CS film, addition of CuO NPs obviously improved the morphological, mechanical, thermal, physical and antifungal properties of CSC film. CSC coating treatment obviously delayed the fruit decay and yellowing, as well as reduced losses of weight and firmness of mango ( Mangifera indica L.) fruit during the storage, when compared with the control and CS coating treatment. Meanwhile, it significantly decreased the respiration rate and ethylene generation and maintained high level of ascorbic acid (AsA), titratable acid (TA) and soluble sugar content (SSC) of the fruit during the storage. Notably, Cu presented in the CSC film was restrained to the peel, indicating that the CSC coated mango fruit had good edible safety. Principal component analysis (PCA) confirmed that CSC coating played a positive role in mango preservation. Therefore, CSC coating can be considered a potential application for successfully controlling of postharvest disease and prolonging the shelf life for mango fruit.

Abstract:In this study, development of bioactive coatings containing 1 % ( w / v ) chitosan (CS), 0.6 % (w/v) diepoxy-polyethylene glycol (PEG), and trans -cinnamaldehyde (CIN) was achieved. The physicochemical and biological properties of the coatings were investigated. The tensile strength, light transmission, water vapor permeability (WVP), and antibacterial properties were enhanced by the incorporation of CIN. The CIN-containing films appeared compact and rough, as observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). In addition, the quality attributes of the bananas were evaluated at room temperature for 24 days, and the results showed that the CS/PEG/CIN coating delayed the respiration peak, weight loss, sugar content loss, and maintained firmness, color, total soluble solids (TSS), titratable acid (TA), and the appearance of the bananas. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that the bioactive coating significantly affected the respiration rate and weight loss of bananas.

Curcumin-loaded HKUST-1@ carboxymethyl starch-based composites with moisture-responsive release properties and synergistic antibacterial effect for perishable fruits

Abstract:The spoilage of fruit is one of the most important causes of fruit waste. High humidity by fresh fruit respiration leads to bacterial reproduction, which is the key factor of products corruption. Herein, a biological multifunctional film (Cur-HKUST-1@CMS/PVA) for fruits preservation with a high moisture environment was developed by cross-linking carboxymethyl starch (CMS)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with MOF-199 (HKUST-1), and loaded with curcumin. The hydrophilic CMS facilitates water adsorption and moisture can stimulate curcumin release from HKUST-1. HKUST-1 not only acts as curcumin carriers but also forms synergistic antibacterial with curcumin to improve the antibacterial activity of the composites. XRD and SEM demonstrated that moisture disrupts the structure of HKUST-1 and releases curcumin and the results showed that the release of curcumin increased from 25.11 % to 58.32 % after moisture stimulation. In addition, Cur-HKUST-1@CMS/PVA had excellent antibacterial activity and antioxidant ability. As validation, the film can keep pitaya and avocado freshness at least 4 days longer than the control, confirming the effectiveness of Cur-HKUST-1@CMS/PVA in preventing fruit decay. Consequently, Cur-HKUST-1@CMS/PVA is a promising active packaging material for improve the shelf life of perishable fruits.
Characterization and Antioxidant and Antibacterial Activities of Carboxymethylated Tamarind Seed Polysaccharide Composite Films Incorporated with ε-Polylysine and Their Application in Fresh-Cut Green Bell Pepper Preservation

Abstract:Traditional petroleum-based food-packaging materials have poor permeability, limited active packaging properties, and difficulty in biodegradation, limiting their application. We developed a carboxymethylated tamarind seed polysaccharide composite film incorporated with ε-polylysine (CTPε) for better application in fresh-cut agricultural products. The CTPε films exhibit excellent water vapor barrier properties, but the mechanical properties are slightly reduced. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction spectra indicate the formation of hydrogen bonds between ε-PL and CTP, leading to their internal reorganization and dense network structure. With the increase of ε-PL concentration, composite films showed notable inhibition of postharvest pathogenic fungi and bacteria, a significant enhancement of 2,2'- azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical-scavenging activity, and gradual improvement of wettability performance. Cytotoxicity experiments confirmed the favorable biocompatibility when ε-PL was added at 0.3% (CTPε2). In fresh-cut bell pepper preservation experiments, the CTPε2 coating effectively delayed weight loss and malondialdehyde increase preserved the hardness, color, and nutrients of fresh-cut peppers and prolonged the shelf life of the fresh-cut peppers, as compared with the control group. Therefore, CTPε composite films are expected to be a valuable packaging material for extending the shelf life of freshly cut agricultural products.

Abstract:Carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) has antibacterial activity and coating-forming ability. Under the impact of noncovalent interactions, the bioactivity and functionality of CMCS may be positively affected by the coexistence of flavonoids. This study investigated the effect of a CMCS coating incorporated with flavonoids from guava ( Psidium guajava L. cv. Carmine) leaf (GLF) on the refrigeration of fresh-cut apples for preservation. Compared with the CMCS group, apples treated with the CMCS-GLF coating showed better quality (weight loss, browning index, firmness), nutritional value (ascorbic acid and total phenolic content), and microbial safety during storage. The mechanism study indicated that the hydrogen bonding, electrostatic, and hydrophobic interactions between CMCS and GLF (the carboxymethyl moiety of CMCS had the highest response priority and binding strength of the interaction with -C-O of GLF) changed the surface charge distribution and microstructure of CMCS, and increased its molecular weight, particle size, viscosity, and hydrophobicity. Thus, the CMCS-GLF coating exerted better bioactivities (antibacterial and antioxidant activity), and its film showed better mechanical and barrier properties. These results revealed that the noncovalent interaction with GLF could modify the physiochemical properties of CMCS, which was beneficial to improve its bioactivity and application value in fresh fruit preservation.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Natural plant essential oils have antimicrobial properties; however, essential oils are difficult to maintain in a system because of their volatile nature. Firstly, we prepared microcapsules from β-cyclodextrin and oregano essential oil and characterized their properties. Secondly, the effect of microcapsules on the preservation of freshly cut purple yam was studied using an edible coating technique. Purple yams immersed in distilled water were used as control, and their characteristics were compared with yams coated with citric acid (CA), citric acid + sodium alginate (CA-SA), and citric acid + sodium alginate + β-cyclodextrin-oregano essential oil microcapsules (CA-SA-MC) and stored at 4 °C for 5 d. RESULTS Microcapsules of oregano essential oil and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) solution were successfully prepared via the inclusion method, with an optimal encapsulation efficiency of 55.14%. Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis showed strong bonds between β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and oregano essential oil. All edible coatings, particularly CA-SA-MC, significantly (P ≤ 0.05) maintained firmness, total soluble solids (TSS), ascorbic acid content, and anthocyanin content compared to control treatment. This treatment also prevented browning and extended the shelf life of purple yam. CONCLUSION Oregano essential oil can be successfully encapsulated into cyclodextrin microcapsules. It has a great impact on the shelf life extension of purple yam and could be successfully applied to other fresh produce. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Pineapple is a tropical fruit that is the most economically significant member of the Bromeliaceae family that are rich in flavonoids, phenolic acids, and antioxidants, which protect human cells from free radicals known to cause chronic diseases. However, short postharvest shelf-life of the fruit limits its long-distance distribution and consumption. Chitosan is a positively charged polysaccharide consisting of N-acetyl d-glucosamine and d-glucosamine units that can be used as a promising sustainable biopolymer for active coating of the fruit. In this work, chitosan-based nanocomposite formulations were prepared with added eugenol (clove essential oil) and Aloe vera gel as antioxidant, antibacterial and antifungal agents. The results showed that the incorporation of eugenol oil nanoemulsion and Aloe vera gel in the coatings enhanced their physico-chemical and functional properties including antimicrobial activities against four foodborne bacterial pathogens (Escherichia coli, Alcaligenes faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus subtilis) and two fungal isolates. The developed coatings not only kept the pineapple fresh, but also preserved its quality and prolonged their shelf-life by up to three weeks during storage in ambient conditions.
Enhanced stability of anthocyanins by cyclodextrin-metal organic frameworks: Encapsulation mechanism and application as protecting agent for grape preservation

Abstract:Anthocyanins are promising naturally occurring food preservatives for enhancing the quality of food products due to their excellent antioxidant properties. However, their low stability hinders their food packaging application. Here, we propose a facile strategy to achieve the improved stability of anthocyanins encapsulated in γ-cyclodextrin metal-organic frameworks (CD-MOFs) with an in-depth exploration of their structure-property relationships. The adsorbed anthocyanins in CD-MOFs are stabilized by multiple cooperative non-covalent interactions including hydrogen bonding and van der Waals (vdW) interactions as demonstrated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and spectroscopy analysis. Particularly, by ion-exchange of acetate ions into the pores of CD-MOFs, the resulting CD-MOFs (CD-MOF_OAc) shows a higher anthocyanins adsorption rate with a maximum loading capacity of 83.7 % at 1 min. Besides, CD-MOF_OAc possesses the more effective protecting effect on anthocyanins with at least two-fold enhancement of stability in comparison of free anthocyanins under heating and light irradiation. The anthocyanins encapsulated CD-MOFs films for fruit freshness was validated by the Kyoho experiment. This novel encapsulation system provides a new possibility for the potential use of CD-MOFs as the encapsulating material for anthocyanins in fruit preservation.
