Abstract:Phase matching is crucial for effective nonlinear frequency conversion. Recent advances in photonic miniaturization greatly promote implementations of efficient nonlinear frequency conversion in integrated photonic devices. Here, we investigate second-harmonic generation in coupled nonlinear waveguides. We develop a nonlinear optical coupled-mode theory and implement the concept of supermode to analyze the phase-matching condition, which greatly facilitates deep understanding of physics therein and optimization of device design. We have successfully identified six phase-matching conditions for the first time. The dynamic nonlinear optical processes are analytically modeled, which explicitly demonstrates that the phase-matching condition can be realized by extra momentum compensating due to the interwaveguide coupling. The influences of input pump amplitude and relative phase difference are successively investigated. The theoretical model presented here should be readily generalized to other nonlinear optical processes (e.g., difference frequency generations) and will remain valid in asymmetric coupled waveguide structures or even beyond a weakly coupling regime. Our results will be useful for constructing highly efficient integrated nonlinear optical conversion devices with extended functionality.

Abstract:Nonlinear optical vibrational spectroscopies are powerful experimental tools for inspecting material properties that are difficult to acquire otherwise. As ultrafast lasers used in such experiments are typically of much broader bandwidth than vibrational modes, narrowband filtering is usually essential, and the utility of laser energy is often highly inefficient. Here we introduce an experimental scheme to break this trade-off. A broadband beam is spatially chirped as it reaches the sample, and generates sum-frequency signals upon overlapping with another broadband, unchirped beam. A narrowband spectrum can then be retrieved from the spatially dispersed image of signals, with both broadband pulses fully utilized. The scheme is also readily employed as a spatially resolved spectroscopy technique without scanning, and can be easily extended to other wave-mixing experiments.
Ultrafast second-order nonlinear photonics -- from classical physics to non-Gaussian quantum dynamics

Abstract:Photonic integrated circuits with second-order ($\chi^{(2)}$) nonlinearities are rapidly scaling to remarkably low powers. At this time, state-of-the-art devices achieve saturated nonlinear interactions with thousands of photons when driven by continuous-wave lasers, and further reductions in these energy requirements enabled by the use of ultrafast pulses may soon push nonlinear optics into the realm of single-photon nonlinearities. This tutorial reviews these recent developments in ultrafast nonlinear photonics, discusses design strategies for realizing few-photon nonlinear interactions, and presents a unified treatment of ultrafast quantum nonlinear optics using a framework that smoothly interpolates from classical behaviors to the few-photon scale. These emerging platforms for quantum optics fundamentally differ from typical realizations in cavity quantum electrodynamics due to the large number of coupled optical modes. Classically, multimode behaviors have been well studied in nonlinear optics, with famous examples including soliton formation and supercontinuum generation. In contrast, multimode quantum systems exhibit a far greater variety of behaviors, and yet closed-form solutions are even sparser than their classical counterparts. In developing a framework for ultrafast quantum optics, we will identify what behaviors carry over from classical to quantum devices, what intuition must be abandoned, and what new opportunities exist at the intersection of ultrafast and quantum nonlinear optics. While this article focuses on establishing connections between the classical and quantum behaviors of devices with $\chi^{(2)}$ nonlinearities, the frameworks developed here are general and are readily extended to the description of dynamical processes based on third-order ($\chi^{(3)}$) nonlinearities.

Frequency-domain nonlinear optics in two-dimensionally patterned quasi-phase-matching media

Abstract:Advances in the amplification and manipulation of ultrashort laser pulses has led to revolutions in several areas. Examples include chirped pulse amplification for generating high peak-power lasers, power-scalable amplification techniques, pulse shaping via modulation of spatially-dispersed laser pulses, and efficient frequency-mixing in quasi-phase-matched nonlinear crystals to access new spectral regions. In this work, we introduce and demonstrate a new platform for nonlinear optics which has the potential to combine all of these separate functionalities (pulse amplification, frequency transfer, and pulse shaping) into a single monolithic device. Moreover, our approach simultaneously offers solutions to the performance-limiting issues in the conventionally-used techniques, and supports scaling in power and bandwidth of the laser source. The approach is based on two-dimensional patterning of quasi-phase-matching gratings combined with optical parametric interactions involving spatially dispersed laser pulses. Our proof of principle experiment demonstrates this new paradigm via mid-infrared optical parametric chirped pulse amplification of few-cycle pulses.

Abstract:Integrated photonics has for several years included in its panoply the development of functions based on third-order non-linear optical phenomena, from the generation of supercontinuum or frequency comb sources to metrology or spectroscopy on chip applications. This natural evolution, after the development of high-speed transceivers in the last few years, particularly in silicon photonics, is based on a number of compromises and still has to solve problems, particularly concerning the integration of nonlinear materials on silicon and their exploitation. The work we present addresses two directions. The first is oriented towards the development of a supercontinuum source using Nitrogen-rich photonic circuits from an industrial CMOS platform, while the second aims at the development of hybrid highly nonlinear waveguides significantly reducing the impact of twophoton absorption in the telecom window around 1,55μm by exploiting silicon slot waveguides infiltrated by chalcogenide glasses (As2S3).

Abstract:We present an overview of recently developed ideas in ultrafast nonlinear optics, and describe three applications where these ideas have had an impact. A closer look at three wave mixing of broadband electromagnetic fields in birefringent nonlinear crystals shows that not only phase matching, but also group velocity matching is important for understanding the process of up- and down-conversion with ultrashort laser pulses. In fact the higher-order dispersion of nonlinear crystalline materials provides an underused degree of freedom that allows tailoring the interaction so that it is suitable for a number of different applications. We analyse the processes of parametric downconversion for the production of pure single photon states, and upconversion for ultrashort pulse characterization and for quantum state and process tomography in molecules.

Abstract:Coherent nonlinear optical μ -spectroscopy is a frequently used tool in modern material science as it is sensitive to many different local observables, which comprise, among others, crystal symmetry and vibrational properties. The richness in information, however, may come with challenges in data interpretation, as one has to disentangle the many different effects like multiple reflections, phase jumps at interfaces, or the influence of the Guoy-phase. In order to facilitate interpretation, the work presented here proposes an easy-to-use semi-analytical modeling Ansatz , which bases upon known analytical solutions using Gaussian beams. Specifically, we apply this Ansatz to compute nonlinear optical responses of (thin film) optical materials. We try to conserve the meaning of intuitive parameters like the Gouy-phase and the nonlinear coherent interaction length. In particular, the concept of coherence length is extended, which is a must when using focal beams. The model is subsequently applied to exemplary cases of second- and third-harmonic generation. We observe a very good agreement with experimental data, and furthermore, despite the constraints and limits of the analytical Ansatz , our model performs similarly well as when using more rigorous simulations. However, it outperforms the latter in terms of computational power, requiring more than three orders less computational time and less performant computer systems.

Quantum noise dynamics in nonlinear pulse propagation

Abstract:The propagation of ultrafast pulses in dispersion-engineered waveguides, exhibiting strong field confinement in both space and time, is a promising avenue towards single-photon nonlinearities in an all-optical platform. However, quantum engineering in such systems requires new numerical tools and physical insights to harness their complicated multimode and nonlinear quantum dynamics. In this work, we use a self-consistent, multimode Gaussian-state model to capture the nonlinear dynamics of broadband quantum fluctuations and correlations, including entanglement. Notably, despite its parametrization by Gaussian states, our model exhibits nonlinear dynamics in both the mean field and the quantum correlations, giving it a marked advantage over conventional linearized treatments of quantum noise, especially for systems exhibiting gain saturation and strong nonlinearities. Numerically, our approach takes the form of a Gaussian split-step Fourier (GSSF) method, naturally generalizing highly efficient SSF methods used in classical ultrafast nonlinear optics; the equations for GSSF evaluate in $O(M^2\log M)$ time for an $M$-mode system with $O(M^2)$ quantum correlations. To demonstrate the broad applicability of GSSF, we numerically study quantum noise dynamics and multimode entanglement in several ultrafast systems, from canonical soliton propagation in third-order ($\chi^{(3)}$) waveguides to saturated $\chi^{(2)}$ broadband parametric generation and supercontinuum generation, e.g., as recently demonstrated in thin-film lithium niobate nanophotonics.

Abstract:Over the last few decades, nonlinear optics has become significantly more nonlinear, traversing nearly a billionfold improvement in energy efficiency, with ultrafast nonlinear nanophotonics in particular emerging as a frontier for combining both spatial and temporal engineering. At present, cutting-edge experiments in nonlinear nanophotonics place us just above the mesoscopic regime, where a few hundred photons suffice to trigger nonlinear saturation. In contrast to classical or deep-quantum optics, the mesoscale is characterized by dynamical interactions between mean-field, Gaussian, and non-Gaussian quantum features, all within a close hierarchy of scales. When combined with the inherent multimode complexity of optical fields, such hybrid quantum-classical dynamics present theoretical, experimental, and engineering challenges to the contemporary framework of quantum optics. In this review, we highlight the unique physics that emerges in multimode nonlinear optics at the mesoscale and outline key principles for exploiting both classical and quantum features to engineer novel functionalities. We briefly survey the experimental landscape and draw attention to outstanding technical challenges in materials, dispersion engineering, and device design for accessing mesoscopic operation. Finally, we speculate on how these capabilities might usher in some new paradigms in quantum photonics, from quantum-augmented information processing to nonclassical-light-driven dynamics and phenomena to all-optical non-Gaussian measurement and sensing. The physics unlocked at the mesoscale present significant challenges and opportunities in theory and experiment alike, and this review is intended to serve as a guidepost as we begin to navigate this new frontier in ultrafast quantum nonlinear optics.

Abstract:Quasi-phase-matched interactions in waveguides with quadratic nonlinearities enable highly efficient nonlinear frequency conversion. In this paper, we demonstrate the first generation of devices that combine the dispersion engineering available in nanophotonic waveguides with quasi-phase-matched nonlinear interactions available in periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN). This combination enables quasi-static interactions of femtosecond pulses, reducing the pulse energy requirements by several orders of magnitude compared to conventional devices, from picojoules to femtojoules. We experimentally demonstrate two effects associated with second harmonic generation (SHG). First, we observe efficient quasi-phase-matched SHG with of pulse energy. Second, in the limit of strong phase-mismatch, we observe spectral broadening of both harmonics with as little as 2 pJ of pulse energy. These results lay a foundation for a new class of nonlinear devices, in which coengineering of dispersion with quasi-phase-matching enables efficient nonlinear optics at the femtojoule level. © 2020 Optical Society of America under the terms of the OSA Open Access Publishing Agreement

Abstract:In photorefractive waveguide arrays, the process and extent of spectral broadening of femtosecond laser pulse caused by self-phase modulation are studied theoretically and experimentally. The threshold of self-phase modulation is more than two times larger than the common threshold in a bulk sample, which affects the extent of spectral broadening dramatically. The coupling length and the ratio between the common threshold and the input peak intensity of the femtosecond laser pulse are the two key parameters dominating these phenomena. The experimental results confirm the theoretical expectation.
Nonlinear semiclassical spectroscopy of ultrafast molecular polariton dynamics

Abstract:We introduce a theoretical framework that allows for the systematic and efficient description of the ultrafast nonlinear response of molecular polaritons, i.e., hybrid light-matter states, in the collective regime of large numbers of molecules $\mathcal N$ coupled to the cavity photon mode. Our approach is based on a semiclassical, mean-field evolution of the molecular Hamiltonian and the cavity field, which is complemented by a perturbative expansion of both light and matter counterparts in the input fields entering the cavity. In addition, expansion in terms of the pulse phases enables us to disentangle different excitation pathways in Liouville space, thereby distinguishing contributions to the nonlinear response. The formalism extends traditional free-space nonlinear spectroscopy by incorporating the feedback of matter onto the light field via the induced polarization. We demonstrate the utility of the framework by applying it to the calculation of pump-probe polariton spectra and show how, by storing the pulses, the cavity facilitates additional excitation pathways which are not possible in free space. Our method, which does not scale with $\mathcal N$, is broadly applicable and can be extended to a wide range of current experiments investigating the dynamical nonlinear response of hybrid light-matter states.

Abstract:Nonlinear Compton scattering (NCS) and nonlinear Breit-Wheeler (NBW) process are strongly multi-photon and highly nonlinear processes. In ultra intense lasers (normalized field amplitude $a_0 \gg 1$), radiation formation length is much shorter than a period and single NCS/NBW cannot be described as scatterings of electrons dressing plane waves with $\gamma$ photons for what they feel is a local constant crossed field. However, present theories in constant crossed fields are hard to give some important quantum features due to divergence problems, such as number of laser photons involved, instantaneous angular distribution and detailed spectrum. As an alternative, present understanding of single NCS/NBW in ultra intense lasers includes several classical and semi-quantum ideas such as forward emission, recoil reaction and spectrum cutoff. We investigated multi-photon effects on NCS/NBW in ultra intense lasers by extracting the number of laser photons involved in a single process in ultra intense lasers from formulae of existing theories. New features of single NCS in ultra intense lasers including fixed emission angle to instantaneous electron momentum, instantaneous deflection of electron, and disappearance of spectrum cutoff are deduced. Similar features of single NBW in ultra intense lasers including non-vanishing emission angles to instantaneous $\gamma$ photon momentum, disappearance of spectrum cutoff and appearance of spectrum lower limit are also obtained. Simulations show that corresponding signals of multi-photon effects are significant on $10$PW scale and stronger lasers.

Abstract:This article reviews recent progress in quasi-phasematched $\chi^{(2)}$ nonlinear nanophotonics, with a particular focus on dispersion-engineered nonlinear interactions. Throughout this article, we establish design rules for the bandwidth and interaction lengths of various nonlinear processes, and provide examples for how these processes can be engineered in nanophotonic devices. In particular, we apply these rules towards the design of sources of non-classical light and show that dispersion-engineered devices can outperform their conventional counterparts. Examples include ultra-broadband optical parametric amplification as a resource for measurement-based quantum computation, dispersion-engineered spontaneous parametric downconversion as a source of separable biphotons, and synchronously pumped nonlinear resonators as a potential route towards single-photon nonlinearities.

Abstract:Based on quasinormal-mode theory, we propose a novel approach enabling a deep analytical insight into the multi-parameter design and optimization of nonlinear photonic structures at subwavelength scale. A key distinction of our method from previous formulations relying on multipolar Mie-scattering expansions is that it directly exploits the natural resonant modes of the nanostructures, which provide the field enhancement to achieve significant nonlinear efficiency. Thanks to closed-form expression for the nonlinear overlap integral between the interacting modes, we illustrate the potential of our method with a two-order-of-magnitude boost of second harmonic generation in a semiconductor nanostructure, by engineering both the sign of $\chi^{(2)}$ at subwavelength scale and the structure of the pump beam.

Abstract:The ability to control the instantaneous state of light, from high-energy pulses down to the single-photon level, is an indispensable requirement in photonics. This has, for example, facilitated spatiotemporal probing and coherent control of ultrafast light-matter interactions, and enabled capabilities such as generation of exotic states of light with complexity, or at wavelengths, that are not easily accessible. Here, by leveraging the multifunctional control of light at the nanoscale offered by metasurfaces embedded in a Fourier transform setup, we present a versatile approach to synthesize ultrafast optical transients with arbitrary control over its complete spatiotemporal evolution. Our approach, supporting an ultrawide bandwidth with simultaneously high spectral and spatial resolution, enables ready synthesis of complex states of structured space-time wave packets. We expect our results to offer unique capabilities in coherent ultrafast light-matter interactions and facilitate applications in microscopy, communications, and nonlinear optics.

Abstract:Broadband dispersion free, large and ultrafast nonlinear material platforms comprise the essential foundation for the study of nonlinear optics, integrated optics, intense field optical physics, and quantum optics. Despite substantial research efforts, such material platforms have not been established up to now because of intrinsic contradictions between large nonlinear optical coefficient, broad operating bandwidth, and ultrafast response time. In this work, a broadband dispersion free, large and ultrafast nonlinear material platform based on broadband epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) material is experimentally demonstrated, which is designed through a novel physical mechanism of combining structural dispersion and material dispersion. The broadband ENZ material is constructed of periodically nanostructured indium tin oxide (ITO) films, and the structure is designed with the help of theoretical predictions combined with algorithm optimization. Within the whole broad ENZ wavelength range (from 1300 to 1500 nm), a wavelength-independent and large average nonlinear refractive index of −4.85 × 10−11 cm2/W, which is enlarged by around 20 times than that of an unstructured ITO film at its single ENZ wavelength, and an ultrafast response speed at the scale of Tbit/s are experimentally reached simultaneously. This work not only provides a new approach for constructing nonlinear optical materials but also lays the material foundation for the application of nanophotonics.

Using system-reservoir methods to derive effective field theories for broadband nonlinear quantum optics: a case study on cascaded quadratic nonlinearities

Abstract:In broadband quantum optical systems, nonlinear interactions among a large number of frequency components induce complex dynamics that may defy heuristic analysis. In this work we introduce a perturbative framework for factoring out reservoir degrees of freedom and establishing a concise effective model (effective field theory) for the remaining system. Our approach combines approximate diagonalization of judiciously partitioned subsystems with master equation techniques. We consider cascaded optical $\chi^{(2)}$ (quadratic) nonlinearities as an example and show that the dynamics can be construed (to leading order) as self-phase modulations of dressed fundamental modes plus cross-phase modulations of dressed fundamental and second-harmonic modes. We then formally eliminate the second-harmonic degrees of freedom and identify emergent features of the fundamental wave dynamics, such as two-photon loss channels, and examine conditions for accuracy of the reduced model in dispersive and dissipative parameter regimes.
