Abstract:In this paper an alternative method, the reverberation-ray matrix method (MRRM), is employed for free vibration of Timoshenko beams resting on a general elastic foundation with horizontal frictions. The complementary dynamic solutions for a uniform foundation beam are derived based on the governing equations, and the formulations of the MRRM are obtained by the boundary conditions and compatibility of displacements. For an arbitrary beam resting on a nonuniform foundation, the piece-wise model is adopted and the coupling conditions at each middle joint are considered in reconstructing formulations of the MRRM. The characteristic equation is finally obtained and numerical examples are conducted. The results prove that the present method is accurate and versatile. It is also concluded that the horizontal friction constant has obvious effects on both of the fundamental and relatively higher order frequencies of beams resting on a general foundation.

Abstract:This study investigates the free vibrations of elastically constrained shear and Rayleigh beams placed on the Pasternak foundation. Of particular interest, it is aimed to analyze the influence of shear strain, rotational inertia, elastic stiffness, and shear layer on the natural frequencies and eigenmodes of beam vibrations. For this purpose, the eigenfrequencies and eigenmodes are determined using analytical and numerical techniques. A finite element scheme is developed employing quadratic and cubic polynomials for slope and transverse displacement, respectively. The efficiency and accuracy of the finite element method are illustrated by comparing it with the analytical results for generalized and special cases. The underlying model analysis justifies that the natural frequencies of the beam vibration depend only on the geometry of the Rayleigh beam, while these frequencies depend on the physical and geometric properties of the shear beam. However, the natural frequencies of the Euler-Bernoulli depend solely on the geometric conditions of the beam.

Abstract:A hierarchical finite element is presented for the geometrically nonlinear free and forced vibration of a non-uniform Timoshenko beam resting on a two-parameter foundation. Legendre orthogonal polynomials are used as enriching shape functions to avoid the shear-locking problem. With the enriching degrees of freedom, the accuracy of the computed results and the computational efficiency are greatly improved. The arc-length iterative method is used to solve the nonlinear eigenvalue equation. The computed results of linear and nonlinear vibration analyses show that the convergence of the proposed element is very fast with respect to the number of Legendre orthogonal polynomials used. Since the elastic foundation and the axial load applied at both ends of the beam affect the ratios of linear frequencies associated with the internal resonance, they influence the nonlinear vibration characteristics of the beam. The axial tensile stress of the beam in nonlinear vibration is investigated in this paper, and attention should be paid to the geometrically nonlinear vibration resulting in considerably large axial tensile stress in the beam.
Elastoplastic Analysis with Fine Beam Model of Vector Form Intrinsic Finite Element

Abstract:A new fine beam model of vector form intrinsic finite element is proposed to conduct elastoplastic analysis of beams with different depth-span ratios. Vector form intrinsic finite element is a new structural analysis method to compute large deformation, collision, and fracture problems. The presented fine beam model is different from Euler beam or Timoshenko beam. The coupled effects of multifactor are considered in this new model, such as shear deformation, additional axial displacement induced by additional rotation of cross section, and additional transverse displacements considering bending stiffness reduction due to shear deformation. Applying to vector form intrinsic finite element analysis, the formula of strain and internal force of this new beam model is derived. The plane cross-sectional assumption is also modified when the material is at plastic stage. Using the proposed model, computer programs are developed by Fortran. Comparison between the computational results by present method and numerical or experimental results in the literature shows that the present fine beam model of vector form intrinsic finite element is more efficient and accurate when the analyzed beam has a large depth-span ratio and material is at plastic stage.

Abstract:In this study, we explore the complex vibration problem of a Rayleigh beam under axial loads, positioned over a variable Winkler foundation with elastic properties changing along its length. The investigation delves into how factors like rotational inertia, axial forces, and foundation properties affect the beam’s dimensionless eigenvalues and eigenmodes. Employing the Differential Transform Method (DTM), we tackle the governing equations across various foundation conditions, including constant, linear, and parabolic variations. The results align well with the previous research, affirming their precision between scenarios considering or neglecting the elastic foundation’s effects. Notably, we emphasize the influence of linear spring stiffness on vibration characteristics, overshadowing rotary spring stiffness. Thus, the important novelty of the study lies in its comprehensive investigation into the vibration dynamics of a Rayleigh beam under axial loads on a variable Winkler foundation with elastic properties varying along its length. The findings illuminate a previously unexplored dynamic: the intricate interplay between linear and rotary spring stiffness, showcasing the dominant impact of linear stiffness on vibration characteristics. Of significant note is the profound effect of axial forces on fundamental eigenvalues, underscoring their critical role in structural behavior. These developments possess substantial practical implications, providing invaluable guidance for the accurate modeling of beams supported by elastic foundation, thereby enhancing structural design and performance.

Abstract:The vibrations of beams on a nonlinear elastic foundation were analyzed considering the effects of transverse shear deformation and the rotational inertia of beams. A weak form quadrature element method （QEM） is used for the vibration analysis. The fundamental frequencies of beams are presented for various slenderness ratios and nonlinear foundation parameters for both slender and short beams. The results for slender beams compare well with finite element results. The analysis shows that the transverse shear deformation and the nonlinear foundation parameter significantly affect the fundamental frequency of the beams.

Abstract:An analytical method and a semi-analytical method are proposed to analyze the dynamic thermo-elastic behavior of structures resting on a Pasternak foundation. The analytical method employs a finite Fourier integral transform and its inversion, as well as a Laplace transform and its numerical inversion. The semi-analytical method employs the state space method, the differential quadrature method (DQM), and the numerical inversion of the Laplace transform. To demonstrate the two methods, a simply supported Euler–Bernoulli beam of variable length is considered. The governing equations of the beam are derived using Hamilton's principle. A comparison between the results of analytical method and the results of semi-analytical method is carried out, and it is shown that the results of the two methods generally agree with each other, sometimes almost perfectly. A comparison of natural frequencies between the semi-analytical method and the experimental data from relevant literature shows good agreements between the two kinds of results, and the semi-analytical method is validated. Different numbers of sampling points along the axial direction are used to carry out convergence study. It is found that the semi-analytical method converges rapidly. The effects of different beam lengths and heights, thermal stress, and the spring and shear coefficients of the Pasternak medium are also investigated. The results obtained in this paper can serve as benchmark in further research.

Abstract:This research studies the vibration analysis of Euler–Bernoulli and Timoshenko beams utilizing the differential quadrature method (DQM) which has wide applications in the field of basic vibration of different components, for example, pillars, plates, round and hollow shells, and tanks. The free vibration of uniform and nonuniform beams laying on elastic Pasternak foundation will be studied under three sets of boundary conditions, that is, mixing between being simply upheld and fixed while utilizing the DQM. The natural frequencies and deflection values were produced through the examination of both beam types. Results show great concurrence with solutions from previous research studies. The impact of the nonuniform cross-section area on the vibration was contemplated. A comparison between the results from both beams is obtained. The focus of this work is on studying the deflection difference between both beam theories at different beam dimensions as well as showing the shape of rotation of the cross section while applying a nodal point load equation to simulate the moving load. The results were discussed and a general contemplation about the theories was developed.

Abstract:This study reveals a special vibration characteristic of an axially compressed Timoshenko beam on a Winkler foundation, namely that the vibration configuration in the sequence of the natural frequencies may undergo a reordering in response to changes in certain parameters. New explicit analytical expressions of the natural frequencies are derived, which considers both the shear and rotatory inertia effects in the beam. The key independent dimensionless parameters that control the modal reordering phenomenon are then identified from the resulting frequency. By examining the vibration response of structures with various parameters over the full range of axial loads, it is observed that the frequencies of some initial low- and high-order vibration modes approach each other and then veer away, thus causing a reordering in the vibration modes. The fundamental reason for the occurrence of this phenomenon is also discussed in detail. Finally, the effect of the key structural parameters is investigated, it is shown that the structure having a greater slenderness ratio or a greater relative stiffness between the foundation and beam is more prone to experience a vibration modal reordering under axial pressure.

An analytical approach to study the dynamic characteristic of beams carrying any type of attachments with arbitrary distributions under elastic constraint boundary supports

Abstract:An analytical method to study the dynamic characteristic of free vibration of beams carrying any type of attachments with arbitrary distributions on elastic constraint boundary supports is developed in the paper. To obtain an exact solution of the governing function, the displacement function is expressed as a modified Fourier series based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam differential equation, which consists of a standard Fourier cosine series plus several supplementary series used to improve uniform convergence of the series representation. Compared with other techniques, the current method offers a unified solution to entire situations of beams carrying various types of attachments, regarding different distributions and arbitrary boundary conditions. The results of different numerical examples are compared with the results of the references to illustrate the excellent accuracy of the current solution and validate the methodology. Furthermore, the proposed analytical method can be directly extended to caculate the natural frequencies of beam on Pasternak soil and with distribution attachment varying with its length which is never studied before.

Abstract:The research of structures with elastic foundations has attracted extensive attention and many dynamic modeling and analysis methods for beam structures with elastic foundations have been proposed in current mainstream research. However, the low-dimension and high-accuracy models are more in line with the requirements of engineering practice. Hence, this paper aims to establish a novel nonlinear dynamic model of beam structures with nonlinear elastic foundations and boundaries. The global modes are first obtained by using the global mode method, and the forced vibration response analysis of the beam structures is subsequently carried out by developing a corresponding solving procedure. Thereafter, case studies are conducted on a cantilever beam with nonlinear elastic foundations and boundaries to validate the established nonlinear dynamic model. The consistency of the results obtained by the established model and finite element analysis demonstrates the accuracy of the established model. Finally, the effects of elastic foundations, boundaries, external excitation amplitude and nonlinear coupling terms on the dynamic characteristics of the cantilever beam structure are analyzed through the comparative case studies.

Abstract:Xu, Yingqian; Wang, Ning; With consideration of pre-axial pressure and two-parameter elastic foundation (Pasternak), a new method was put forward for analysis of transverse free vibration of a finite-length Euler-Bernoulli beam resting on a variable Pasternak elastic foundation. Matrices and determinants corresponding to arbitrary boundary conditions were provided for engineers and researchers according to their own demand. In derivation process of new proposed method, Schwarz distribution was adopted for simplifying the partial derivative of Dirac function and compound trapezoidal integral formula was adopted for discretizing the shape function of beam. For the symmetrical boundary conditions, it was concluded that natural frequency of transverse free vibration obtained by FEM highly agreed with the new proposed method. In contrary, for the asymmetrical cases, the calculation results were different from each other. For solving the ordinary differential equation with nonlinear partial derivative terms of shape function, the key point of new proposed method was to establish stiffness equation set composed of obtained matrices, rather than a single equation on the basis of classical theory. This point should be treated as a great advantage. New proposed method can be generalized to solve more complicated problems, which were illustrated in conclusion and prospect.

Free vibration analysis of elastically connected multiple-beams with general boundary conditions using improved Fourier series method

Abstract:Lots of dynamic systems in science and engineering can be simplified as the elastically connected multiple-beams, such as carbon nano tubes and pipes. However, in the majority of current study, just translational spring is considered on beam coupling interfaces. As we know that, not only the translation but also the rotational deformation will occur during beam bending problem. In this work, general beam vibration model is established, in which both two types of translational and rotational springs are taken into account for the coupling interface and both ends. An improved Fourier series is employed for the vibration displacement description for each beam, in which the additional terms are introduced to meet the continuity requirement when the constructed expression is used as the admissible functions. Modal parameters can be determined through the application of Rayleigh-Ritz procedure to the system energy formulation. The current model is then validated through the comparison with those from other analytical approach in open literature. The results show that the current model can made efficient and accurate prediction on the modal property of such complex beam system. The effect of rotational spring on the modal characteristics is also emphasized.

Abstract:Critical velocities are investigated for an infinite Timoshenko beam resting on a Winkler-type elastic foundation subjected to a harmonic moving load. The determination of critical velocities ultimately comes down to discrimination of the existence of multiple real roots of an algebraic equation with real coefficients of the 4th degree, which can be solved by employing Descartes sign method and complete discrimination system for polynomials. Numerical calculations for the European high-speed rail show that there are at most four critical velocities for an infinite Timoshenko beam, which is very different from those gained by others. Furthermore, the shear wave velocity must be the critical velocity, but the longitudinal wave velocity is not possible under certain conditions. Further numerical simulations indicate that all critical velocities are limited to be less than the longitudinal wave velocity no matter how large the foundation stiffness is or how high the loading frequency is. Additionally, our study suggests that the maximum value of one group velocity of waves in Timoshenko beam should be one "dangerous" velocity for the moving load in launching process, which has never been referred to in previous work.

Abstract:We study the buckling and free vibration of functionally graded (FG) sandwich Timoshenko beams resting on an elastic foundation. In contrast to the majority of the literature on this subject, the behaviors of both the beam and elastic foundation are considered as nonlocal by applying the stress-driven strategy equipped with a bi-Helmholtz kernel. We find that in the presence of a nonlocal elastic foundation, the local/nonlocal mixture should be adopted in order to obtain a well-posed formulation of the problem at hand. The equations of motion and the standard boundary conditions are obtained by invoking Hamilton's principle. Each integro-differential constitutive law is transformed into an equivalently differential form equipped with four non-standard constitutive boundary conditions. The generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM) is then utilized to solve the corresponding eigenvalue problems numerically. Several comparative studies are conducted to validate the effectiveness of our solution. The numerical simulation results present the size-effect on the critical buckling loads and natural frequency of the beams with various boundary types, providing a new benchmark for further study of modeling small-scale beam structures using the bi-Helmholtz kernel-based stress-driven mixture model. Moreover, the influence of considering the size-dependency of the elastic foundation is also investigated.

Abstract:The structures in engineering can be simplified into elastic beams with concentrated masses and elastic spring supports. Studying the law of vibration of the beams can be a help in guiding its design and avoiding resonance. Based on the Laplace transform method, the mode shape functions and the frequency equations of the beams in the typical boundary conditions are derived. A cantilever beam with a lumped mass and a spring is selected to obtain its natural frequencies and mode shape functions. An experiment was conducted in order to get the modal parameters of the beam based on the NExT-ERA method. By comparing the analytical and experimental results, the effects of the locations of the mass and spring on the modal parameter are discussed. The variation of the natural frequencies was obtained with the changing stiffness coefficient and mass coefficient, respectively. The findings provide a reference for the vibration analysis methods and the lumped parameters layout design of elastic beams used in engineering.

Abstract:In this article, a new refined beam theory, namely one variable first-order shear deformation theory, has been employed to study the vibration and buckling characteristics of nonlocal beam. The beam is exposed to an axial magnetic field and embedded in Winkler–Pasternak foundation. The von Kármán hypothesis along with Hamilton's principle has been implemented to derive the governing equations for both the vibration and buckling studies, and closed-form solutions are obtained for simply supported beam using the Navier's approach. Further, a parametric study has been conducted to explore the impacts of small-scale parameter, Winkler modulus, shear modulus and magnetic field intensity on natural frequencies and critical buckling loads.

Abstract:The paper deals with the steady state responses of an infinite Euler-Bernoulli beam resting on a nonlinear foundation under a harmonic moving load. Greatly different from previous works, the nonlinear partial differential governing equation of the beam motion is converted to two nonlinear Volterra integral equations by using the Fourier transform, residues Theorem and the convolution theorem. The Volterra integral equations have four different expressions depending on the damping coefficient of the foundation, the linear part of the foundation stiffness and the frequency of the moving load. The modified Adomian decomposition method in conjunction with a simple iterative formula derived from the integral equation theorems are applied to obtain analytical solutions for the steady state responses of the beam. The closed form solutions presented in this paper do not contain complicated infinite integrals, which are better to show the influence of the nonlinear part of foundation stiffness. The parametric study shows that the nonlinear part of foundation stiffness affects not only qualitative but also quantitative analysis results of the infinite Euler-Bernoulli beam under a harmonic moving load.

By this method, a nonlinear algebraic equation along with a set of linear algebraic equations are required to be solved, which reduces computation effort. The results determined by the present method are compared with the corresponding results obtained by the existing method. Besides, the effect of various parameters on nonlinear vibrational behavior is examined.

Abstract:In this paper a mixed method, which combines the state space method and the differential quadrature method, is proposed for bending and free vibration of arbitrarily thick beams resting on a Pasternak elastic foundation. Based on the two-dimensional state equation of elasticity, the domain along the axial direction is discretized according to the principle of differential quadrature (DQ). As a result, the state equations about the variables at discrete points are established. With consideration of the end conditions and the upper and lower boundary conditions in the derived state equations, governing equations for bending and free vibration problems are formulated. Numerical results prove that the present approach is very efficient and reliable. The effects of Poisson's ratio and foundation parameters on the natural frequencies are discussed.
