Abstract:Prior studies have observed an age-related decline in net ankle power and work at faster walking speeds. However, the underlying changes in muscle-tendon behavior are not well-understood, and are challenging to infer from joint level analyses. This study used shear wave tensiometry to investigate the modulation of force and work done by the triceps surae across walking speeds. Fourteen healthy young (7F/7M, 26 ± 5 years) and older (7F/7M, 67 ± 5 years) adults were tested. Subjects walked on an instrumented treadmill at four walking speeds (0.75, 1.00, 1.25, and 1.50 m/s) while lower extremity kinematics and Achilles tendon shear wave speeds were collected. Subject-specific calibrations were used to compute Achilles tendon force from wave speed. Excursions of the soleus and gastrocnemius muscle-tendon units were computed from the kinematic data and subject-specific measures of the Achilles tendon moment arm. Work loop plots were then used to assess effective muscle-tendon stiffness during lengthening, and positive, negative, and net work production during stance. Two-way mixed ANOVAs were used to evaluate the effects of age group and walking speed on each outcome measure. Tendon loading during muscle-tendon lengthening (effective stiffness) did not differ between age groups, but did vary with speed. The soleus became effectively stiffer with increasing speed while the gastrocnemius became effectively more compliant. There was a marked age-related deficit in net soleus (-66% on average) and gastrocnemius (-36%) work across all walking speeds. We did not observe an age-speed interaction effect on net work production. These results suggest the age-related deficit in triceps surae output in walking is pervasive across speed, and hence seemingly not linked to absolute mechanical demands of the task.

It is mostly slower in older adults than young adults; however, effects of leg length on the ES have been ignored. Abstract:Healthy ageing modifies neuromuscular control of human overground walking. Previous studies found that ageing changes gait biomechanics, but whether there is concurrent ageing-related modulation of neuromuscular control remains unclear. We analyzed gait kinematics and electromyographic signals (EMGs; 14 lower-limb and trunk muscles) collected at three speeds during overground walking in 11 healthy young adults (mean age of 23.4 years) and 11 healthy elderlies (67.2 years). Neuromuscular control was characterized by extracting muscle synergies from EMGs and the synergies of both groups were ${k}$ -means-clustered. The synergies of the two groups were grossly similar, but we observed numerous cluster- and muscle-specific differences between the age groups. At the population level, some hip-motion-related synergy clusters were more frequently identified in elderlies while others, more frequent in young adults. Such differences in synergy prevalence between the age groups are consistent with the finding that elderlies had a larger hip flexion range. For the synergies shared between both groups, the elderlies had higher inter-subject variability of the temporal activations than young adults. To further explore what synergy characteristics may be related to this inter-subject variability, we found that the inter-subject variance of temporal activations correlated negatively with the sparseness of the synergies in elderlies but not young adults during slow walking. Overall, our results suggest that as humans age, not only are the muscle synergies for walking fine-tuned in structure, but their temporal activation patterns are also more heterogeneous across individuals, possibly reflecting individual differences in prior sensorimotor experience or ageing-related changes in limb neuro-musculoskeletal properties.

Abstract:The mechanisms responsible for increased metabolic cost of walking in older adults are poorly understood. We recently proposed a theoretical premise by which age-related reductions in Achilles tendon stiffness (k AT ) can disrupt the neuromechanics of calf muscle force production and contribute to faster rates of oxygen consumption during walking. The purpose of this study was to objectively evaluate this premise. We quantified k AT at a range of matched relative activations prescribed using electromyographic biofeedback and walking metabolic cost and ankle joint biomechanics in a group of 15 younger (age: 23±4 yrs) and 15 older adults (age: 72±5 yrs). Older adults averaged 44% lower k AT than younger adults at matched triceps surae activations during isokinetic dorsiflexion tasks on a dynamometer (p=0.046). Older adults also walked with a 17% higher net metabolic power (p=0.017) but indistinguishable peak Achilles tendon forces than younger adults. Thus, data implicate altered tendon length-tension relations with age more than differences in the operating region of those length-tension relations between younger and older adults. In addition, we discovered empirical evidence that lesser k AT - likely due to the shorter muscle lengths and thus higher relative activations it imposes - was positively correlated with higher net metabolic power during walking (r=-0.365, p=0.048). These results pave the way for interventions focused on restoring ankle muscle-tendon unit structural stiffness to improve walking energetics in aging.

Abstract:Macrostructural white matter damage (WMD) is associated with less uniform and slower walking in older adults. The effect of age and subclinical microstructural WM degeneration (a potentially earlier phase of WM ischemic damage) on walking patterns and speed is less clear. This study examines the effect of age on the associations of regional microstructural WM integrity with walking variability and speed, independent of macrostructural WMD. This study involved 493 participants (n = 51 young; n = 209 young-old; n = 233 old-old) from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging. All completed a 400-meter walk test and underwent a concurrent brain MRI with diffusion tensor imaging. Microstructural WM integrity was measured as fractional anisotropy (FA). Walking variability was measured as trend-adjusted variation in time over ten 40-meter laps (lap time variation, LTV). Fast-paced walking speed was assessed as mean lap time (MLT). Multiple linear regression models of FA predicting LTV and MLT were adjusted for age, sex, height, weight, and WM hyperintensities. Independent of WM hyperintensities, lower FA in the body of the corpus callosum was associated with higher LTV and longer MLT only in the young-old. Lower FA in superior longitudinal, inferior fronto-occipital, and uncinate fasciculi, the anterior limb of the internal capsule, and the anterior corona radiate was associated with longer MLT only in the young-old. While macrostructural WMD is known to predict more variable and slower walking in older adults, microstructural WM disruption is independently associated with more variable and slower fast-paced walking only in the young-old. Disrupted regional WM integrity may be a subclinical contributor to abnormal walking at an earlier phase of aging.

Abstract:The study of split-belt treadmill adaptation provides insight into the priorities determining how we adapt to novel conditions during walking. During split-belt adaptation, young adults reduce their metabolic cost and positive leg work in part by learning to take longer steps on the fast belt, thus adopting a positive step length asymmetry. However, aging may lead to a shift in the work performed by distal versus proximal joints, so it is unknown if older adults can similarly reduce the work performed by the legs during split-belt walking. Therefore, we quantified the relationship between joint work rate and step length asymmetry when fourteen older adults walked on a split-belt treadmill. We hypothesized that total positive joint work would decrease at more positive step length asymmetries and that more positive asymmetries would be associated with a reduction in positive ankle joint work on the fast belt. We found that step length asymmetry was negatively correlated with total positive work (p = 0.01) and that changes in positive joint work were primarily driven by positive ankle work on the fast belt (p = 0.01). Since ankle musculature is hypothesized to be a major contributor to metabolic cost during gait, reductions in ankle joint work likely contribute to the reduction in metabolic cost observed in other studies of split-belt walking. These results demonstrate that healthy aging still allows individuals to take advantage of the work performed by the treadmill to reduce the mechanical energy cost of walking.

Abstract:Gait adaptability is crucial for meeting environmental demands, and impaired gait adaptation increases fall risk, particularly in older adults. While prior research exists on older adults' gait adaptation, particularly in perturbation studies, the specific contributions of temporal and spatial adaptation strategies to step length asymmetry (SLA) during split-belt treadmill walking require further examination. This study fills this gap by evaluating how distinct adaptation strategies contribute to SLA in healthy young and older adults. 19 healthy young adults (20.4 ± 1.1 years) and 19 healthy older adults (68.3 ± 8.1 years) walked on a split-belt treadmill requiring their non-dominant leg to move twice as fast as their dominant leg. Repeated measures ANOVA investigated (1) spatial and temporal contributions to SLA, (2) SLA across gait adaptation epochs, and (3) rates of adaptation and deadaptation. Older adults displayed reduced temporal contributions to SLA compared to younger adults (F 1,36 = 6.42, p = .02, ŋ 2 = .15), but no group differences were observed in spatial contributions to SLA (F 1,36 = 3.23, p = .08, ŋ 2 = .082). SLA during adaptation and deadaptation did not differ by age group, nor did the rate of adaptation (F 1,34.7 = 0.594, p = .45) or deadaptation F 1,33.6 = 2.886, p = .09). These findings suggest that while older adults rely less on temporal strategies for gait adaptation, but maintain overall adaptability comparable to younger adults. Findings enhance our understanding of age-related changes in gait adaptation mechanisms and may inform targeted interventions to improve gait adaptability in older populations.

Abstract:Mobility decline is a major concern for older adults. A key component of maintaining mobility with advancing age is the ability to learn and adapt to the environment. The split-belt treadmill paradigm is an experimental protocol that tests the ability to adapt to a dynamic environment. Here we examined the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) derived structural neural correlates of individual differences in adaptation to split-belt walking for younger and older adults. We have previously shown that younger adults adopt an asymmetric walking pattern during split-belt walking, particularly in the medial-lateral (ML) direction, but older adults do not. We collected T -weighted and diffusion-weighted MRI scans to quantify brain morphological characteristics (i.e. in the gray matter and white matter) on these same participants. We investigated two distinct questions: (1) Are there structural brain metrics that are associated with the ability to adopt asymmetry during split-belt walking; and (2) Are there different brain-behavior relationships for younger and older adults? Given the growing evidence that indicates the brain has a critical role in the maintenance of gait and balance, we hypothesized that brain areas commonly associated with locomotion (i.e. basal ganglia, sensorimotor cortex, cerebellum) would be associated with ML asymmetry and that older adults would show more associations between split-belt walking and prefrontal brain areas. We identified multiple brain-behavior associations. More gray matter volume in the superior frontal gyrus and cerebellar lobules VIIB and VIII, more sulcal depth in the insula, more gyrification in the pre/post central gyri, and more fractional anisotropy in the corticospinal tract and inferior longitudinal fasciculus corresponded to more gait asymmetry. These associations did not differ between younger and older adults. This work progresses our understanding of how brain structure is associated with balance during walking, particularly during adaptation.

Abstract:A descriptive study of the biomechanical variables of the walking patterns of the fit and healthy elderly compared with those of young adults revealed several significant differences. The walking patterns of 15 elderly subjects, selected for their active life style and screened for any gait- or balance-related pathological conditions, were analyzed. Kinematic and kinetic data for a minimum of 10 repeat walking trials were collected using a video digitizing system and a force platform. Basic kinematic analyses and an inverse dynamics model yielded data based on the following variables: temporal and cadence measures, heal and toe trajectories, joint kinematics, joint moments of force, and joint mechanical power generation and absorption. Significant differences between these elderly subjects and a database of young adults revealed the following: the same cadence but a shorter step length, an increased double-support stance period, decreased push-off power, a more flat-footed landing, and a reduction in their "index of dynamic balance." All of these differences, except reduction in index of dynamic balance, indicate adaptation by the elderly toward a safer, more stable gait pattern. The reduction in index of dynamic balance suggests deterioration in the efficiency of the balance control system during gait. Because of these significant differences attributable to age alone, it is apparent that a separate gait database is needed in order to pinpoint falling disorders of the elderly.

Abstract:Optimal skeletal muscle oxidative function (microvascular reactivity and mitochondrial capacity) is an integral part of healthy aging and is related to physical function and quality of life. We aimed to extend upon the understanding of skeletal muscle oxidative function with healthy aging in males and females across the adult lifespan. Younger (N = 22; 11 males), middle-aged (N = 19; 10 males), and older (N = 21; 10 males) adults completed this study. Time spent in moderate and vigorous physical activity was self-reported and similar among groups. Near-infrared spectroscopy was used to investigate skeletal muscle microvascular reperfusion (O 2 Hb+Mb half time to peak hyperemia; T 1/2), mitochondrial capacity (mVO 2 recovery rate constant), and walking tissue oxygen saturation (StO 2 ) of the tibialis anterior (TA) muscle at 7 incremental walking speeds. Mitochondrial capacity was not significantly different across groups ( p = 0.07). Younger adults exhibited significantly slower T 1/2 compared with older adults ( p = 0.006) and middle-aged adults ( p = 0.025). There were no observed sex differences for mitochondrial capacity ( p = 0.442) or T 1/2 ( p = 0.402). Older adults exhibited significantly lower StO 2 across all walking speeds compared with younger adults ( p = 0.003). Mitochondrial capacity and microvascular reperfusion are maintained in middle- and older age with no sex differences in either outcome. However, in older adults, whole-body functional movement, such as walking, may place an additional demand on the TA as a compensatory response to lower functional reserve not evident in distinct measures of mitochondrial capacity and microvascular reperfusion.

Abstract:Locomotor movements are accommodated to various surface conditions by means of specific locomotor adjustments. This study examined underlying age-related differences in neuromuscular control during level walking and on a positive or negative slope, and during stepping upstairs and downstairs. Ten elderly and eight young adults walked on a treadmill at two different speeds and at three different inclinations (0°, +6°, and -6°). They were also asked to ascend and descend stairs at self-selected speeds. Full body kinematics and surface electromyography of 12 lower-limb muscles were recorded. We compared the intersegmental coordination, muscle activity, and corresponding modifications of spinal motoneuronal output in young and older adults. Despite great similarity between the neuromuscular control of young and older adults, our findings highlight subtle age-related differences in all conditions, potentially reflecting systematic age-related adjustments of the neuromuscular control of locomotion across various support surfaces. The main distinctive feature of walking in older adults is a significantly wider and earlier activation of muscles innervated by the sacral segments. These changes in neuromuscular control are reflected in a reduction or lack of propulsion observed at the end of stance in older adults at different slopes, with the result of a delay in the timing of redirection of the centre-of-mass velocity and of an unanticipated step-to-step transition strategy.
Effects of age on balance control during walking

Abstract:Objective: To determine the effects of aging on balance control during walking. Design: Two-group repeated-measures design. Setting: Gait laboratory in Australia. Participants: Convenience sample of 20 healthy older subjects (mean age, 72y) and 20 healthy young subjects (mean age, 24y). Interventions: Changes in locomotor performance in response to perturbations to balance were quantified for healthy older adults compared with healthy young adults for (1) straight line walking at preferred speed, (2) straight line walking at fast speed, (3) figure-of-eight walking at preferred speed, and (4) figure-of-eight walking while performing a secondary motor task. Main outcome measures: Gait speed, stride length, cadence, and double-limb support duration, using a footswitch system. Results: Healthy older people screened for pathology had gait patterns comparable to young adults for straight line walking at preferred speed. However, multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) showed a significant interaction between age and speed when balance was perturbed by requiring subjects to change from walking at preferred to fast speeds (Pillai-Bartlett trace=.259, F(4,35)=3.06, P<.029, partial eta(2)=.259). This occurred because older people did not increase their speed (F(1,38)=7.65, P<.01, partial eta(2)=.168) or stride length (F(1,38)=12.23, P<.01, partial eta(2)=.243) as much as did the young adults. MANOVAs did not show statistically significant interactions between age and turning conditions or age and dual task conditions, although older people walked more slowly and with shorter steps when turning or performing a secondary task. Conclusions: Balance strategies during gait are task specific and vary according to age. In response to challenges to balance imposed by the requirement to change from preferred to fast walking, older people did not increase their speed and stride length to the same extent as did younger adults. This was possibly a strategy to maintain their stability.
Age-related differences in gastrocnemii muscles and Achilles tendon mechanical properties in vivo

Abstract:Ageing is associated with alterations in the structure and function of the contractile and elastic tissues that enable movement, posture, and balance. Alterations in structure and mechanical properties of the ankle plantarflexors and Achilles tendon are of particular interest due to their important 'catapult-like' function during efficient and healthy human locomotion. In this study, we examined age-related differences in the in vivo mechanical properties of both muscle and tendon in the human ankle plantarflexors in healthy younger (21 ± 3.25 years) and older (69 ± 2.86 years) adults. All participants were physically active, to represent healthy ageing. B-mode ultrasound coupled with force measurements was used to determine in vivo Achilles tendon stiffness and shear-wave elastography was used to measure shear modulus, an index of muscle stiffness, in the medial and lateral gastrocnemii. We found that older adults displayed 43% lower (p = 0.004) Achilles tendon stiffness, 59% lower (p < 0.001) Achilles tendon Young's modulus, and 34% greater (p = 0.002) Achilles tendon cross-sectional area compared to younger participants. We found no difference in the shear modulus of the medial or lateral gastrocnemii between the younger and older individuals. The reduction in Achilles tendon stiffness coupled with similar gastrocnemii muscle shear modulus likely influences the integrated neuromechanical function of the ankle plantarflexor muscle-tendon units during locomotor tasks. Further investigations into the relationship between altered mechanical properties and in vivo muscle-tendon dynamics will provide greater insights into the age-related declines in mobility and locomotor function.
Role of Walking Energetics and Perceived Fatigability Differs by Gait Speed: The Study of Muscle, Mobility and Aging (SOMMA)

Abstract:Background: Slower gait speed may be driven by greater energy deficits and fatigability among older adults. We examined associations of walking energetics and perceived physical fatigability with gait speed among slower and faster walkers. Additionally, we used statistical mediation to examine the role of fatigability in the associations of walking energetics and gait speed using the Study of Muscle, Mobility and Aging (SOMMA). Methods: Perceived physical fatigability was assessed using the Pittsburgh Fatigability Scale (PFS) Physical score (range 0-50, higher = greater). A 3-phase cardiopulmonary exercise treadmill test collected peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak, mL/kg/min), energetic cost of walking (ECW, mL/kg/m), and cost-capacity ratio (VO2/VO2peak*100, %). Slower (<1.01 m/s) versus faster (≥1.01 m/s) walkers were classified using median 4-m gait speed. Linear regressions and statistical mediation analyses were conducted. Results: Slower walkers had lower VO2peak, higher ECW at preferred walking speed (PWS), and greater PFS Physical score compared to faster walkers (all p < .05; N = 849). One standard deviation (1-SD) higher VO2peak was associated with 0.1 m/s faster gait speed, while 1-SD higher ECW PWS, cost-capacity ratio at PWS and slow walking speed (SWS), and PFS Physical score were associated with 0.02-0.23 m/s slower gait speed. PFS Physical score was a significant statistical mediator in the associations between VO2peak (15.2%), SWS cost-capacity ratio (15.9%), and ECW PWS (10.7%) with gait speed and was stronger among slower walkers. Conclusions: Slower walkers may be more influenced by perceptions of fatigue in addition to walking energetics. Our work highlights the importance of targeting both energetics and perceived fatigability to prevent mobility decline.
The Relationships between Age and Running Biomechanics

Abstract:Running has high injury rates, especially among older runners. Most aging literature compares young with old runners without accounting for the progression of biomechanics throughout the lifespan. We used age as a continuous variable to investigate the continuum of age-related gait adaptations in running along with determining the chronology and rate of these adaptations. Purpose: This study aimed to identify the relations among age and selected running biomechanics throughout the range of 18-60 yr. Methods: Experienced (n = 110) healthy runners (male, 54%) provided informed consent and ran at their training pace while motion and force data were captured. Kinematics, ground reaction forces (GRF), and lower limb joint torques and powers were correlated with age using Pearson product-moment correlations and linear regression. Results: Running velocity was inversely related to age (r = -0.27, P = 0.005) because of decreased stride length (r = -0.25, P = 0.008) but not rate. Peak vertical GRF (r = -0.23, P = 0.016) and peak horizontal propulsive GRF decreased with age (r = -0.38, P < 0.0001). Peak ankle torque (r = -0.32, P = 0.0007) and peak negative (r = 0.34, P = 0.0003) and positive (r = -0.37, P < 0.0001) ankle power decreased with age. Age-based regression equations and per-year reductions in all variables significantly related to age are reported. Conclusions: Data support previous work showing lower GRF, stride length, and velocity in old runners. Results are novel in showing the rate of decline in running biomechanics on a per-year basis and that mechanical reductions at the ankle but not at the hip or knee were correlated with age, confirming a previous observation of biomechanical plasticity with age showing reduced ankle but not hip function in gait.

Abstract:Background: Longevity is increasing worldwide due to improvements in healthcare and living standards. Aging is often associated with disability and multiple health concerns. To address these challenges, effective interventions are essential. This study investigated potential age-related declines in gait, balance, and strength. We also sought to assess any relationships between these three parameters and explore potential differences between women and men. Methods: Healthy individuals over 50 years of age were recruited for this cross-sectional study. Upper extremity (grip) strength and lower extremity (knee) strength of the dominant side were measured. Static balance was performed on the force plate in different situations each for 30 seconds: bilateral stance with eyes open, bilateral stance with eyes closed, as well as dominant leg and non-dominant leg unilateral stance with eyes open. Gait was measured during level walking using an optical motion capture system. Additionally, the dynamic stability margin (DSM) was calculated for the level walking trials. Results: The study results indicated that gait parameters were not significantly affected by age (p≥0.12), while knee and grip strength, along with several balance parameters, showed a significant decline with age. All individuals were able to maintain their bipedal balance, but their center of pressure movement increased significantly by age (p≤0.028). Z-scores were calculated to compare significant age parameters. Unipedal stance time was found to be the most affected by age compared to other contributing factors (p≤0.001). The duration of unipedal balance showed the most significant change per decade (non-dominant: -0.62 SDs; dominant: -0.53 SDs), while strength measures exhibited the lowest amount of change per decade (grip strength: -0.34 SDs; knee strength: -0.26 SDs). Sex differences were observed exclusively in strength parameters, with no discernible impact on the decline in balance parameters. Conclusions: These findings suggest that the duration of unipedal stance can serve as a reliable and gender-independent measure of neuromuscular aging for both elderly male and female subjects.
The Influence of Footwear Longitudinal Bending Stiffness on Running Economy and Biomechanics in Older Runners

Abstract:Purpose: This study assessed the effects of footwear longitudinal bending stiffness on running economy and biomechanics of rearfoot striking older runners. Methods: Nine runners over 60 years of age completed two running bouts at their preferred running pace in each of three footwear conditions: low (4.4 ± 1.8 N·m-1), moderate (5.7 ± 1.7 N·m-1), and high (6.4 ± 1.6 N·m-1) bending stiffness. Testing order was randomized and a mirror protocol was used (i.e., A,B,C,C,B,A). Expired gases, lower limb kinematics, and ground reaction forces were collected simultaneously and lower limb joint kinetics, running economy (i.e., VO2), leg stiffness, and spatio-temporal variables were calculated. Results: Running economy was not different among stiffness conditions (p = 0.60, p = 0.53 [mass adjusted]). Greater footwear stiffness reduced step length (p = 0.046) and increased peak vertical ground reaction force (p = 0.019) but did not change peak ankle plantarflexor torque (p = 0.65), peak positive ankle power (p = 0.48), ankle positive work (p = 0.86), propulsive force (p = 0.081), and leg stiffness (p = 0.46). Moderate footwear stiffness yielded greater peak negative knee power compared to low (p = 0.04) and high (p = 0.03) stiffness. Conclusions: These novel findings demonstrate that increasing footwear longitudinal bending stiffness using flat carbon fiber inserts does not improve running economy and generally does not alter lower limb joint mechanics of rearfoot strike runners over 60 years. Future studies should investigate how other footwear characteristics (e.g., midsole material, plate location, and sole curvature) influence economy and biomechanics in this population.
Speed related changes in muscle activity from normal to very slow walking speeds

Abstract:The study of neuromuscular activity at very slow walking speeds may lead to a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying speed regulation during walking, and may aid the interpretation of gait data in patients who walk slowly. Extreme reductions in walking speed will cause changes in locomotor task demands that may eventually result in modifications of the patterning of muscle activity that underlies walking. The aim of the present study was to investigate patterns of lower limb muscle activity during very slow walking (< 0.28 m s(-1)), and to study the neuromuscular gain functions that reflect the phase dependent effects of walking speed on electromyographic (EMG) amplitude. Nine healthy young adults walked at seven different walking speeds (1.39, 0.83, 0.28, 0.22, 0.17, 0.11, and 0.06 m s(-1)) while EMG was recorded from eight lower extremity muscles. Results showed that the phasing of muscle activity remained relatively stable over walking speeds despite substantial changes in its amplitude. However, between 1.39 and 0.28 m s(-1), epochs of Rectus femoris, Biceps femoris and Tibialis anterior activities were found that were typical for specific speed ranges. When walking speed decreased further to almost standing still (0.06 m s(-1)), negative gain values were found in Peroneus longus during midstance and Rectus femoris in late swing, indicating the emergence of new bursts of activity with decreasing walking speed. It is proposed that these extra activities may be attributed to increased demands on postural stability, and the altered dynamics of the swinging limb at very slow speeds.

Abstract:The dynamical nature of gait increases fall risk for older adults as the Center of Mass (COM) is constantly displaced inside and outside the Base of Support (BOS). Foot placement and leg joint moments are the primary mechanisms controlling dynamic balance. The Margin of Stability (MOS) quantifies the distance between the COM dynamical state and the BOS. While research examined how aging affects the relationship between foot placement and MOS, the relationship to leg moments is unexamined. Examining this relationship would elucidate whether aging increases fall risk from changes in the joint moments controlling the COM. Fourteen older (66.9 ± 4.3 years) and sixteen young (26.3 ± 3.6 years) adults walked along a 12m path for three trials. The MOS, hip and ankle moments in sagittal and frontal planes were analyzed. For the knee, only the sagittal plane was analyzed. MOS was calculated as the distance between the extrapolated-COM and the Center of Pressure per step. Statistical Parametric Mapping independent t-tests assessed group differences. Cross-correlation quantified MOS and joint moment relationships per plane during single-stance. No group differences in walking speed were observed. A larger frontal plane MOS, hip abduction and ankle eversion moment occurred for older adults. Cross-correlation demonstrated moderate and strong relationships for the hip-MOS for both groups in the sagittal plane. Older adults had a larger sagittal plane hip-MOS correlation than young adults. The larger mediolateral MOS in older adults may indicate attempts to avoid lateral balance loss by shifting their COM away from their BOS lateral boundaries during single-stance. However, this strategy moves the COM toward the BOS medial borders potentially pre-maturely terminating the contralateral swing phase during medial destabilization. The stronger sagittal plane hip-MOS relationship in older adults may reflect increased coupling between hip moments and the COM to control dynamic balance.

Abstract:This study is a cross-sectional study and aims to determine the differences in lower limb muscle activation and variability at preferred, slow, and fast walking speeds according to age and fall risk. We divided 301 participants into groups based on fall risk (fall-risk vs. non-fall-risk). We measured muscle activation and its coefficients of variation (CV) for the rectus femoris (RF), biceps femoris (BF), tibialis anterior (TA), and medial gastrocnemius muscle (GCM) at speeds 20% slower, 20% faster, and 40% faster than the preferred speed (PS). When compared by fall risk, fall-risk older adults had significantly lower GCM activity and higher CVs of RF, BF, TA, and GCM in PS. With changes in gait speed, fall-risk older adults had significantly increased CVs of RF, BF, and GCM. Our findings provide new evidence that variability rather than muscle activity increases with walking speed in older adults at risk of falls, highlighting the importance of decreasing muscle activity variability in preventing fall risk.
