Abstract:Nonlinear optics in whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microresonators have attracted much attention. Owing to strong confinement of the light in a small volume, a WGM microresonator can dramatically boost the strength of light field, giving rise to enhancement of the nonlinear interactions of light with the resonator material. Here, we demonstrate highly efficient second harmonic generation (SHG) and third harmonic generation (THG) in an on-chip monocrystalline lithium niobate (LN) microresonator. Benefitting from a cyclic phase matching scheme for the transverse-electric WGMs, nonlinear wavelength conversion utilizing the largest second-order nonlinear coefficient d33, which has not been demonstrated until now despite of its obvious advantage, is successfully achieved in an X-cut LN microresonator. We obtain high conversion efficiencies in not only the SHG (3.8% mW^-1) but also the THG (0.3% mW^-2) realized through a cascaded sum-frequency process. Our results represent a major step toward the classical and quantum photonic integrated circuits.
Enhanced Second Harmonic Generation in A Plasmonic Particle-In-Cavity Nanoantenna

Abstract:Plasmonic nanostructures that support surface plasmon resonances potentially provide a route for the development of nanoengineered nonlinear optical media. A strong enhancement of second harmonic generation (SHG) in a particle-in-cavity nanoantenna (PIC-NA) is proposed and theoretically demonstrated in this work. The fundamental and second harmonic responses of the PIC-NA are calculated using a self-consistent boundary element method. Through a comparison with the linear field enhancement spectra, the SHG from PIC-NA is boosted by the strongly enhanced fundamental and SH fields arising from the cascaded focusing of large optical energy into the small gap. The proposed 3D plasmonic PIC-NA functions as the new synthetic second-order nonlinear optical material that has promising applications in the nonlinear sensing, spectroscopy and frequency generating.
Second-harmonic Generation Via Double Topological Valley-Hall Kink Modes in All-Dielectric Photonic Crystals

Abstract:Nonlinear topological photonics, which explores topics common to the fields of topological phases and nonlinear optics, is expected to open up a new paradigm in topological photonics. Here, we demonstrate second-harmonic generation (SHG) via nonlinear interaction of double topological valley-Hall kink modes in all-dielectric photonic crystals (PhCs). We first show that two topological frequency band gaps can be created around a pair of frequencies, omega(0) and 2(omega 0), by gapping out the corresponding Dirac points in two-dimensional honeycomb PhCs. Valley-Hall kink modes along a kink-type domain wall interface between two PhCs placed together in a mirror-symmetric manner are generated within the two frequency band gaps. Importantly, through full-wave simulations and mode dispersion analysis, we demonstrate that tunable, bidirectional phase-matched SHG via nonlinear interaction of the valley-Hall kink modes inside the two band gaps can be achieved. In particular, by using Stokes parameters associated with the magnetic part of the valley-Hall kink modes, we introduce the concept of SHG directional dichroism, which is employed to characterize optical probes for sensing chiral molecules. Our work opens up avenues toward topologically protected nonlinear frequency mixing and active photonic devices implemented in all-dielectric material platforms.
Multiplexing-oriented nonlinear plasmon-assisted MoS$_2$ metasurfaces driven by the quasi bound states in the continuum

Abstract: Rapid progress in nanofabrication techniques has enabled many novel optical characteristics for metasurfaces. However, the research of nonlinear plasmonic metasurfaces is still rather superficial, due to the lack of a clear physical picture to depict their working mechanisms. Here we provide a comprehensive theoretical study on the properties of nonlinear plasmon-assisted MoS$_2$ hybrid metasurfaces that originate from the bound states in the continuum (BICs), from the perspective of both classical and quantum approaches. New mechanisms to identify and create the trapped resonances that fueled by BICs are elaborated. By exploiting the sharp resonances of light-capturing modes, we demonstrate that the optical nonlinearity can be significantly boosted and smartly tuned. Utilizing both the plasmon-polariton resonance and plasmonic quasi-BICs, ultra-high nonlinear susceptibilities at different wavelength windows can be obtained at the same time. This wavelength-multiplexed nonlinear metasurfaces have many potential applications in frequency metrology, timing characterization, quantum information, etc, where multiple color signals need to be nonlinearly processed simultaneously. This work will also raise deeper exploration and lead new directions for experimental plasmonic BICs.

Abstract:Transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers possess large second-order nonlinear susceptibility and have shown great potentials in on-chip nonlinear optical devices. However, the thickness of TMD monolayers is less than 1nm, resulting in a rather low second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency. In this paper, we propose a physical scheme of enhancing SHG of TMD monolayers with edge plasmon. As a proof of concept demonstration, we constructed a hexagonal gold nanoplates/monolayer WS2 heterostructure with high interface quality. By performing SHG measurements, we show that SHG was enhanced by a factor of about 60. Our results set a foundation for on-chip nonlinear optical applications with TMD monolayers.

Abstract:Nonlinear frequency conversion provides essential tools for light generation, photon entanglement, and manipulation. Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) possess huge nonlinear susceptibilities and 3R-stacked TMD crystals further combine broken inversion symmetry and aligned layering, representing ideal candidates to boost the nonlinear optical gain with minimal footprint. Here, we report on the efficient frequency conversion of 3R-MoS2, revealing the evolution of its exceptional second-order nonlinear processes along the ordinary (in-plane) and extraordinary (out-of-plane) directions. By measuring second harmonic generation (SHG) of 3R-MoS2 with various thickness - from monolayer (~0.65 nm) to bulk (~1 {\mu}m) - we present the first measurement of the in-plane SHG coherence length (~530 nm) at 1520 nm and achieve record nonlinear optical enhancement from a van der Waals material, >10^4 stronger than a monolayer. It is found that 3R-MoS2 slabs exhibit similar conversion efficiencies of lithium niobate, but within propagation lengths >100-fold shorter at telecom wavelengths. Furthermore, along the extraordinary axis, we achieve broadly tunable SHG from 3R-MoS2 in a waveguide geometry, revealing the coherence length in such structure for the first time. We characterize the full refractive index spectrum and quantify both birefringence components in anisotropic 3R-MoS2 crystals with near-field nano-imaging. Empowered with these data we assess the intrinsic limits of the conversion efficiency and nonlinear optical processes in 3R-MoS2 attainable in waveguide geometries. Our analysis highlights the potential of 3R-stacked TMDs for integrated photonics, providing critical parameters for designing highly efficient on-chip nonlinear optical devices including periodically poled structures, resonators, compact optical parametric oscillators and amplifiers, and optical quantum circuits.

Abstract:The growing demand for tailored nonlinearity calls for a structure with unusual phase discontinuity that allows the realization of nonlinear optical chirality, holographic imaging, and nonlinear wavefront control. Transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) monolayers offer giant optical nonlinearity within a few-angstrom thickness, but limitations in optical absorption and domain size impose restriction on wavefront control of nonlinear emissions using classical light sources. In contrast, noble metal-based plasmonic nanosieves support giant field enhancements and precise nonlinear phase control, with hundred-nanometer pixel-level resolution; however, they suffer from intrinsically weak nonlinear susceptibility. Here, we report a multifunctional nonlinear interface by integrating TMDC monolayers with plasmonic nanosieves, yielding drastically different nonlinear functionalities that cannot be accessed by either constituent. Such a hybrid nonlinear interface allows second-harmonic (SH) orbital angular momentum (OAM) generation, beam steering, versatile polarization control, and holograms, with an effective SH nonlinearity χ (2) of ~25 nm/V. This designer platform synergizes the TMDC monolayer and plasmonic nanosieves to empower tunable geometric phases and large field enhancement, paving the way toward multifunctional and ultracompact nonlinear optical devices.

Abstract:Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) possess large second-order nonlinear responses due to the broken inversion symmetry, which can extend their intriguing applications in nonlinear nanophotonics and optoelectronics. However, the atomic thickness of monolayer TMDs severely decreases the interaction length with free light with respect to bulk materials, leading to rather low second-harmonic generation (SHG) conversion efficiency. Here, we demonstrate a hybrid structure consisting of a monolayer MoS2 on a suspended perforated silver film, on which the SHG signal emitted from the monolayer MoS2 is enhanced by more than three orders of magnitude at room temperature. The pronounced SHG enhancement is attributed to the distinct electric field amplification nearby the nanoholes, which is induced by the symmetric surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) existing in the ultrathin suspended silver grating. Our results reported here may establish the substrate-free engineering of nonlinear optical effects via plasmonic nanostructures on demand.

Abstract:Although TMDC monolayers offer giant optical nonlinearity within few-angstrom thickness, it is still elusive to modulate and engineer the wavefront of nonlinear emissions. The grain size of high-quality monolayers also restricts possibilities of imparting inhomogeneous or gradient profiles of phases and amplitudes by classical light sources. Plasmonic nanosieves can support huge field enhancement and precise nonlinear phase control with hundred-nanometer pixel-level resolution, however they suffer from intrinsically weak nonlinear susceptibility. In nature, epoxy represents a strong glue whose magic adhesion comes from the bonding of two intrinsic loose and nonsticky resins. Inspired by the nature of epoxy, we report a multifunctional and powerful nonlinear interfaces via integrating transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) monolayers with linear plasmonic nanosieves, which cannot be accessed by either constituents. We experimentally demonstrate orbital angular momentum (OAM) generation, beam steering, versatile polarization control and holograms and of SH emission, with the proposed nonlinear interfaces. In addition, an effective second-harmonic (SH) nonlinearity \c{hi}(2) of ~25 nm/V is obtained for such systems. This designer platform synergizes the complementary advantages of TMDC monolayer, plasmonic nanosieves, geometric phases, and field enhancement, paving a distinct avenue toward designer, multi-functional, and ultra-compact nonlinear optical devices.

Combining ultrahigh index with exceptional nonlinearity in resonant transition metal dichalcogenide nanodisks

Abstract:Second-order nonlinearity in solids gives rise to a plethora of unique physical phenomena ranging from piezoelectricity and optical rectification to optical parametric amplification, spontaneous parametric down-conversion, and the generation of entangled photon pairs. Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), such as MoS$_2$, exhibit one of the highest known second-order nonlinear coefficients. However, the monolayer nature of these materials prevents the fabrication of resonant objects exclusively from the material itself, necessitating the use of external structures to achieve optical enhancement of nonlinear processes. Here, we exploit the 3R phase of a molybdenum disulfide multilayer for resonant nonlinear nanophotonics. The lack of inversion symmetry, even in the bulk of the material, provides a combination of a massive second-order susceptibility, an extremely high and anisotropic refractive index in the near-infrared region ($n>$~4.5), and low absorption losses, making 3R-MoS$_2$ highly attractive for nonlinear nanophotonics. We demonstrate this by fabricating 3R-MoS$_2$ nanodisks of various radii, which support resonant anapole states, and observing substantial ($>$ 100-fold) enhancement of second-harmonic generation in a single resonant nanodisk compared to an unpatterned flake of the same thickness. The enhancement is maximized at the spectral overlap between the anapole state of the disk and the material resonance of the second-order susceptibility. Our approach unveils a powerful tool for enhancing the entire spectrum of optical second-order nonlinear processes in nanostructured van der Waals materials, thereby paving the way for nonlinear and quantum high-index TMD-nanophotonics.

Abstract:The development of nanomaterials with a large nonlinear susceptibility is essential for nonlinear nanophotonics. We show that transition-metal-dichalcogenide (TMD) nanotriangles have a large effective second-order susceptibility [$\chi^{(2)}$] at mid-infrared to near-infrared frequencies owing to their broken centrosymmetry. $\chi^{(2)}$ is calculated within the density-matrix formalism that accounts for dissipation and screening. $\chi^{(2)}$ peaks in the vicinity of both two-photon resonances (specified by the geometry) and plasmon resonances (tunable via the carrier density). Aligning the resonances yields the values of $\chi^{(2)}$ as high as $10^{-6}$ m/V. These findings underscore the potential of TMD nanotriangles for nonlinear nanophotonics, particularly second-harmonic generation.

Abstract:Nonlinear optical processes in whispering gallery mode (WGM) microresonators have attracted much attention. Owing to the strong confinement of light in a small volume, a WGM microresonator can dramatically boost the strength of light field, thereby promoting the nonlinear interaction between the light and the resonator material. However, realization of efficient nonlinear parametric process in microresonators is a challenging issue. The major difficulty is to simultaneously ensure the phase matching condition and a coherent multiple resonance condition for all the waves participating in the nonlinear conversion process. Here, we demonstrate highly efficient second harmonic generation (SHG) in an on-chip lithium niobate microresonator fabricated by femtosecond laser direct writing. We overcome the difficulty of double resonance for the phase matched pump and second harmonic waves by selectively exciting high order modes in the fabricated thin-disk microresonator. Our technique opens opportunities for integrated classical and quantum photonic applications.
Naturally Phase Matched Lithium Niobate Nanocircuits for Integrated Nonlinear Photonics

Abstract:High complexity, dense integrated nanophotonic circuits possessing strong nonlinearities are desirable for a breadth of applications in classical and quantum optics. In this work, we study natural phase matching via modal engineering in lithium niobate (LN) waveguides and microring resonators on chip for second harmonic generation (SHG). By carefully engineering the geometry dispersion, we observe a $26\%~W^{-1}cm^{-2}$ normalized efficiency for SHG in a waveguide with submicron transverse mode confinement. With similar cross-sectional dimensions, we demonstrate phase matched SHG in a microring resonator with 10 times enhancement on the out-coupled second-harmonic power. Our platform is capable of harnessing the strongest optical nonlinear and electro-optic effects in LN on chip with unrestricted planar circuit layouts. It offers opportunities for dense and scalable integration of efficient photonic devices with low loss and high nonlinearity.

Abstract:Semiconductor nanostructures (e.g., nanowires and nanobelts) hold great promise as subwavelength coherent light sources, nonlinear optical frequency converters, and all-optical signal processors for optoelectronic applications. However, at such small scales, optical second-harmonic generation (SHG) is generally inefficient. Herein, we report on a straightforward strategy using a thin Au layer to enhance the SHG from a single CdS nanobelt by 3 orders of magnitude. Through detailed experimental and theoretical analysis, we validate that the augmented SHG originates from the mutual intensification of the local fields induced by the plasmonic nanocavity and by the reflections within the CdS Fabry-Pérot resonant cavity in this hybrid semiconductor-metal system. Polarization-dependent SHG measurements can be employed to determine and distinguish the contributions of SH signals from the CdS nanobelt and gold film, respectively. When the thickness of gold film becomes comparable to the skin depth, SHG from the gold film can be clearly observed. Our work demonstrates a facile approach for tuning the nonlinear optical properties of mesoscopic, nanostructured, and layered semiconductor materials.
Giant enhancement of optical nonlinearity from monolayer MoS 2 using plasmonic nanocavity

Abstract:The particle-on-mirror nanocavity, supporting multiple plasmonic resonances, provides an ideal platform to efficiently boost the nonlinear optical processes at the nanoscale. Here, we report on the enhancement of the second (SHG) and third-harmonic generations (THG) from the monolayer MoS 2 using a multi-resonant Au nanosphere dimer-on-mirror nanocavity (DoMN). The strong plasmon hybridization between the dimer and underlying Au substrate leads to the emergence of two distinct cavity modes, which are intentionally aligned with the SH and TH frequencies, rendering a 15- and 68-fold enhancement for the SHG and THG of the monolayer MoS 2 , respectively. Further theoretical analysis yields that these remarkable nonlinearity enhancements are also ascribed to the amplification of nonlinear source because of the excellent spatial mode overlap and the high directivity of nonlinear emission enabled by the cavity modes. Our results pave the way for the implementation of low-cost, and highly efficient nonlinear photonics devices integrated with plasmonic nanocavities.

An on-Si directional second harmonic generation amplifier for MoS2/WS2 heterostructure

Abstract:Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) heterostructure is widely applied for second harmonic generation (SHG) and holds great promises for laser source, nonlinear switch, and optical logic gate. However, for atomically thin TMD heterostructures, low SHG conversion efficiency would occur due to reduction of light—matter interaction length and lack of phase matching. Herein, we demonstrated a facile directional SHG amplifier formed by MoS 2 /WS 2 monolayer heterostructures suspended on a holey SiO 2 /Si substrate. The SHG enhancement factor reaches more than two orders of magnitude in a wide spectral range from 355 to 470 nm, and the radiation angle is reduced from 38° to 19° indicating higher coherence and better emission directionality. The giant SHG enhancement and directional emission are attributed to the great excitation and emission field concentration induced by a self-formed vertical Fabry—Pérot microcavity. Our discovery gives helpful insights for the development of two-dimensional (2D) nonlinear optical devices.

Abstract:Second-harmonic generation (SHG) facilitated by plasmonic nanostructures has drawn considerable attention, owing to its efficient frequency up-conversion at the nanoscale and potential applications in on-chip integration and nanophotonic devices. Herein, we present a nanodimer array fabricated by nanoimprinting, composed of nanofinger-pair symmetrically leaning at an off-angle with a well-defined sub-nanometric gap. Commonly, geometric symmetry would suppress the far-field SHG due to the near-field cancelling of symmetric surface SH polarization. However, we find that the light-induced surface SH polarization distribution along the wave-vector of incidence could be influenced by the off-angle, which is consistent to the requirement of SH polarization symmetry-breaking in symmetric metallic nanocavity. A dramatic enhancement of far-field SHG is achieved by tuning the off-angle of nanofinger-pair, even approaching up to over 4 orders of magnitude for an optimal value. The demonstration of SHG enhancement on our well-defined plasmonic nanodimer provides a new way of on-chip integration to activate high-efficient SH radiation, which might be potential for applications in novel nonlinear optical nanodevices with remarkable efficiency and sensitivity.

Abstract:On-chip nanoscale optical platforms capable of efficient second harmonic generation (SHG) are highly desired for optical sensing, subwavelength coherent sources, and quantum photonic devices. Here, we develop a remotely excited dual cavity resonance scheme to achieve significantly enhanced SHG in a CdSe nanobelt on Au film hybrid waveguide system. The SHG emission with superior efficiency originates from counter-propagating plasmonic modes interference in a horizontal Fabry-Pérot (FP) cavity enabled by remote excitation of propagating surface plasmons, which is further enhanced through a vertical FP cavity. With this effective cooperation of hybrid plasmon modes and FP cavity modes, 2 orders of magnitude enhancement of the conversion efficiency (3.5 × 10-4 W-1) is achieved compared to the off-resonance case. Our design provides new insight into the development of a multifunctional hybrid plasmonic device toward on-chip nonlinear nanophotonic applications.
