Abstract:Zoonotic parasites, including Toxocara species, of pet and stray cats are of public health importance. Justification for, and the design and implementation of prevention and control of human toxocariasis may benefit from an understanding of the zoonotic potential and prevalence of parasites in this definitive host species. This is the first systematic review and meta-analysis of cross-sectional studies, conducted to estimate the prevalence of Toxocara infection(s) in cats by geographical location, type (rural vs urban and stray vs pet), gender and age. Pooled data were assessed using a random effects-model as well as several meta-regression and stratified analyses conducted. Of 1733 peer-reviewed articles, 143 were included in this review and represented 2,158,069 cats from 51 countries. The global pooled (95% CI) prevalence of Toxocara infection in cats was 17.0% (16.1-17.8%), being highest in African (43.3%, 28.3-58.4%) and lowest in South American (12.6%, 8.2-17.0%) countries. In other WHO regions, prevalence rates of Toxocara were as follows: Eastern Mediterranean (21.6%, 15.1-28.1%), North America (18.3%, 15.4-21.2%), Europe (17.8%, 15.9-19.7%), Western Pacific (17.3%, 14.7-19.9%), and South-East Asia (14.9%, 9.8-20.1%). Prevalence of Toxocara was higher in low-income tropical countries and also in stray (28.6%, 25.1-32.1%) and young (≤12 months of age) (27.7%, 23.4-32.0%) cats than in pet (11.6%, 10.7-12.5%) and older cats (>12 months of age) (23.8%, 14.8-32.7%). This review indicates that ~118-150 million cats worldwide serve as definitive hosts of Toxocara, shedding eggs and thus contributing to the public health risk of human infection. Prevention and control of this zoonosis in cats should receive greater attention by health officials and cat owners, particularly in countries where risk factors and prevalence are highest.
Unveiling the Transmission Potential of Opisthorchis viverrini and Intestinal Helminths Along the Thailand-Laos Border in Thailand

Abstract:Aims: In pursuit of enhancing prevention efforts for the notably high endemic Opisthorchis viverrini infection in lower Mekong sub-region countries, particularly Thailand and Laos, this cross-sectional study investigated the transmission potential of O. viverrini and other intestinal helminths along the Thailand-Laos border in seven Thai villages. Methods and results: Human and pet faecal samples, Bithynia snails and cyprinid fish were analysed for helminth infections. Additionally, a questionnaire survey assessed relevant risk factors among the human population. Two groups of helminth infections were detected in humans: foodborne infections (FBIs) including O. viverrini, minute intestinal flukes (MIFs), and Taenia spp., and soil-transmitted infections (STIs) including hookworm and Strongyloides stercoralis, with prevalence rates of 7.4%, 0.5%, 2.5%, 0.5%, 2.5% and 3%, respectively. Smoking was identified as a risk factor for O. viverrini infection [adjusted odds ratios (ORa) = 3.12, 95% confidence intervals (CI): 1.33-7.30, p = 0.009] and FBIs (ORa = 2.47, 95% CI: 1.14-5.33, p = 0.022), while male was a risk factor for FBIs (ORa = 2.62, 95% CI: 1.16-5.94, p = 0.021). In dogs, hookworm, Toxocara spp., Spirometra mansoni, Trichuris vulpis and Hymenolepis diminuta were identified with prevalence rates of 35.6%, 8.1%, 8.1%, 1.2% and 1.2%, respectively. In cats, hookworm, Toxocara spp., S. mansoni, Strongyloides spp., Platynosomum fastosum, MIFs and H. diminuta were identified with prevalence rates of 50%, 17.9%, 10.7%, 7.1%, 3.6%, 3.6% and 3.6%, respectively. Bithynia snails showed 2% virgulate and 0.7% unknown cercariae infections, while among 19 cyprinid fish species, only unknown metacercariae were found. Conclusions: Our findings underscore the necessity of an integrated approach following the One Health concept to effectively combat these parasitic diseases while addressing human, animal and environmental health.
A Cross-Sectional Study of Companion Animal-Derived Multidrug-Resistant Escherichia Coli in Hangzhou, China.

Abstract:Antimicrobial resistance poses a challenge to global public health, and companion animals could serve as the reservoir for antimicrobial-resistant bacteria. However, the prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, especially multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria, and the associated risk factors from companion animals are partially understood. Here, we aim to investigate the prevalence of MDR Escherichia coli, as an indicator bacterium, in pet cats and dogs in Hangzhou, China, and evaluate the factors affecting the prevalence of MDR E. coli. The proportion of pets carrying MDR E. coli was 35.77% (49/137), i.e., 40.96% (34/83) for dogs and 27.28% (15/54) for cats. Isolates resistant to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (49.40% and 44.44%), amoxicillin-clavulanic acid (42.17% and 38.89%), and nalidixic acid (40.96% and 35.19%) were the most prevalent in dogs and cats. Interestingly, comparable prevalence of MDR E. coli was observed in pet dogs and cats regardless of the health condition and the history of antibiotic use. Genetic diversity analysis indicates a total of 86 sequencing types (23 clonal complexes), with ST12 being the most dominant. Further genomic investigation of a carbapenem-resistant E. coli ST410 isolate reveals abundant antimicrobial-resistance genes and a plasmid-borne carbapenemase gene (NDM-5) flanked by insertion sequences of IS91 and IS31, suggesting the plasmid and insertion sequences may be involved in carbapenem-resistance dissemination. These data show that companion animal-derived MDR bacteria could threaten public health, and further regulation and supervision of antimicrobial use in pet clinics should be established in China. IMPORTANCE MDR Escherichia coli are considered a global threat because of the decreasing options for antimicrobial therapy. Companion animals could be a reservoir of MDR E. coli, and the numbers of pets and households owning pets in China are booming. However, the prevalence and risk factors of MDR E. coli carriage in Chinese pets were rarely studied. Here, we investigated the prevalence of MDR E. coli in pets in Hangzhou, one of the leading cities with the most established pet market in China, and explored the factors that affected the prevalence. Our findings showed high prevalences of MDR E. coli in pet dogs and cats regardless of their health condition and the history of antibiotic use, suggesting their potential role of public health risk. A call-to-action for improved regulation of antimicrobial use in companion animal is needed in China.

Abstract:Hookworms are the most common parasitic nematodes in the genus of Ancylostoma that infect both humans and animals in subtropical and tropical South East Asia. The common hookworm species in cats is Ancylostoma ceylanicum which is emerging in Thailand. However, the genetic characterization of hookworms in cats is outdated and insufficiently studied in Thailand. We aimed to investigate the prevalence, risk factors and genetic characterization of hookworm infection in semi-domesticated temple cats in Bangkok, Thailand. A total of 500 temple cat fecal samples were collected from 43 monasteries in 24 districts of Bangkok, Thailand. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) was performed by amplifying the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) gene and mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase c subunit I (cox 1) gene. The infection prevalence of hookworm in temple cats was 13.2% (66/500). The highest prevalence was 34.6% in the Bang Khun Thian district, which is located in a suburban area. The risk factor analysis revealed that cats older than one year (OR 2.4, 95% CI 1.1–5.5, p < 0.05), lack of veterinary attention (OR 2.9, 95% CI 1.7–4.9, p < 0.001) and Bangkok zone (suburban vs. inner city; OR 2.9, 95% CI 1.6–5.4, p < 0.001) were significantly increasing hookworm infection risk. All hookworm positive samples were identified as A. ceylanicum by ITS gene. Moreover, genetic characterization of cox 1 gene in A. ceylanicum isolates indicated a mix of isolates from humans, cats and dogs. The findings show that temple cats can act as a potential source of zoonotic hookworm parasites for the human and animal population in Bangkok, Thailand. Therefore, appropriate control measures for hookworms in semi-domesticated temple cats as well as prevention measures for hookworms in pet cats and humans should be promoted.

Abstract:Cat cafés have gained significant popularity worldwide, offering a unique interface between humans and cats. The present study aims to assess the prevalence of potentially zoonotic endoparasites and dermatophytes from cats living in cat cafés situated in the Bangkok metropolitan area in 2017–2018. Cat fecal samples were subjected to microscopic examination employing centrifugal flotation and centrifugal sedimentation techniques. The hair samples from every cat were cultured on a dermatophyte test medium and Sabouraud dextrose agar and subsequently confirmed by visualization of the typical colony and macroconidia morphology. Findings from 11 cat cafés indicated an 18.2% (2/11) prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites, including Toxocara spp., Ancylostoma spp., Physaloptera spp., and Eucoleus aerophilus. Dermatophytes were prevalent in 16.2% (32/198) of the total number of cats tested, with Microsporum canis being the sole species identified. Notably, the presence of dermatophyte was significantly correlated with the presence of skin lesions and the cats’ origin. In summary, the findings of this study have provided evidence of potentially zoonotic endoparasites and dermatophytes in cats residing in cat cafés. Therefore, it is imperative to heighten awareness and encourage preventive measures among cat café owners and customers to halt the dissemination of these pathogens.

Urban landscape and infection risk in free-roaming cats

Abstract:Despite public concern on the role of free-roaming cats as reservoirs of zoonotic agents, little is known about the influence of urban and peri-urban landscapes on the exposure risk. We evaluated the seroprevalence of three zoonotic agents (Chlamydia felis, Coxiella burnetii and Toxoplasma gondii) in domestic cats (Felis catus). Two hundred and ninety-one free-roaming cats were trapped in Murcia municipality (Southeast Spain), and their sera were tested for specific antibodies against T. gondii using a modified agglutination test (MAT), and for C. felis, C. burnetii and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) antibodies with ELISA technique. Pathogen seroprevalence at 95% CI was calculated for each sex and age category (up to and over 12 months) and compared with a chi-squared test. The role of human population density and urban landscape characteristics on the risk of pathogen exposure in the cat population was explored using generalized linear models. Seropositivity against a single pathogen was found in 60% of the cats, while 19% was seropositive for two or three pathogens. Seroprevalence of C. felis was 8% (CI95% : 5-11), 37% (CI95% : 31-42) for C. burnetii and 42% (CI95% : 36-47) for T. gondii. In addition to these three pathogens, FIV seropositivity was low (1%, CI95% : -0.1 to 2) and adult cats were more likely to be seropositive to C. burnetii than young individuals (OR: 2.3, CI95% : 1.2-4.2). No sex or age class differences in seroprevalence were observed for the rest of the pathogens. Seropositivity was correlated with water surface areas for C. felis, and not with crop areas. Coxiella burnetii seropositivity was correlated with the percentage of urban areas (continuous with only buildings and discontinuous, that include buildings, parks, and pedestrian and urban green areas), human population size and peri-urban areas with shrubs, and not correlated with other agricultural landscapes (orchards and crop areas). However, the seroprevalence of T. gondii was only associated with agricultural landscapes such as orchards. The detection of hotspot areas of high pathogen exposure risk is the basis for municipal services to implement surveillance and risk factor control campaigns in specific-risk areas, including (a) efficient health management of urban cat colonies by geographical location, population census and health status monitoring of the components of each cat colony, (b) improvement of hygiene and sanitary conditions at the feeding points of the cat colony and (c) free-roaming cat trapping for health monitoring and, in the long term, to know the evolution of the health status of their populations.
Uncooked fish consumption among those at risk of Opisthorchis viverrini infection in central Thailand

Abstract:In contrast to northern and northeastern Thailand, central Thailand was believed not to be endemic for Opisthorchis viverrini (OV). Fieldwork conducted in a rural area of central Thailand revealed that the prevalence and incidence were relatively high compared with regional average data. We hypothesized that the behavioural-psycho-social background of the study population might play an important role in the high burden of the infection. As a result, a qualitative study was conducted to highlight potential social determinants of the infection dynamics to gain greater understanding of the risk behaviours and their contexts. A qualitative study using focus group discussion and in-depth interviews was conducted in Na-ngam Village, Chachoengsao Province from 2012-14. Framework analysis was used to explore associations between infection and thematic content. Social influence showed a strong impact on infection dynamics of OV infection. Our results revealed that Koi pla (chopped raw fish salad) remains a popular dish in the community, as the dish itself represents northeastern culture. The cultural norm had been transferred from ancestors to their descendants. Some elders complained that discontinuing the consumption of Koi pla went against old traditions with respect to cultural norms and socialization. In contrast, modern education teaches about hygiene including OV infection risks, and accordingly teenagers and young adults were reported to modify their lifestyles including their eating habits. Children are a potential key to pass knowledge to their parents and school-based education programs can serve as a practical hub for knowledge dissemination. However, health education alone might not lead to behavioural change in other age groups. Therefore, more efforts are needed to support the transformation.
Prevalence of pathogens important to human and companion animal health in an urban unowned cat population

Abstract:The deleterious impacts of cat predation on wildlife have been well documented. Additionally, unowned cats may act as reservoirs of disease important to public and companion animal health and their proclivity for roaming and fighting enables effective disease transmission. Urban environments support the highest human populations and companion animal densities, increasing the potential for disease transmission from unowned cats to people and pets. However, there is little data on the prevalence of pathogens in unowned cat populations. This aim of this research was to establish baseline prevalence data for priority pathogens in an urban population of unowned cats. One hundred unowned cat cadavers were collected from the Brisbane City Council region, Queensland, Australia. Blood and additional organ or tissue samples were collected post-mortem. Diagnostic methods for pathogen detection included use of real-time polymerase-chain reaction, commercially available rapid enzyme-linked-immunosorbent assay, lavage and faecal flotation. Pathogen carriage was found in 79% (95% CI 71, 87%) of sampled cats. In total, 62% (95% CI 52, 72%) of cats showed evidence of co-carriage of two or more pathogenic organisms. The overall prevalence found for pathogens and parasites investigated were: Toxoplasma gondii , 7% (95% CI 2, 12%); Coxiella burnetii , 0.0% (95% CI 0, 0%); feline immunodeficiency virus, 12% (95% CI 6, 18%); feline leukaemia virus, 0.0% (95% CI 0, 0%); and gastrointestinal parasites, 76.8% (95% CI 68, 85%). This study reports contemporary prevalence data for these pathogens that have not previously been available for unowned cats of south-east Queensland. High rates of gastrointestinal parasitism observed throughout the study population prompt concerns of a general increase in pathogenic prevalence, especially in comparison with that of owned domestic cats, as per previously published literature. The presence of signs of fighting is an important risk factor for increased likelihood of infection. Data produced from this study contribute to informing cat management efforts throughout urban regions. Continued and expanded investigations, considering prevalence and risk factors of pathogens important to human and companion animal health, are recommended for the south-east Queensland area and beyond.

Abstract:Objectives To determine the prevalence of abnormal coagulation studies and to identify variables associated with markedly elevated coagulation studies in children with blunt trauma. Methods We reviewed the medical records of all patients < 15 years old hospitalized at a Level 1 trauma center for either blunt head or torso trauma over a 4-year period. Data from each patient’s emergency department (ED) presentation were abstracted. ED coagulation studies were defined prior to data analysis as elevated if the international normalized ratio (INR) was ≥1.2 or partial thromboplastin time (PTT) was ≥33.0 seconds and markedly elevated if the INR was ≥1.5 or PTT was ≥40 seconds. Variables associated with markedly elevated coagulation studies in a univariate analysis (P < 0.05) were entered into a backward elimination logistic regression analysis to identify variables independently associated with markedly elevated coagulation studies. Results A total of 1082 patients’ records were reviewed, and the 830 (77%) patients with coagulation studies obtained composed the study population. Elevated coagulation studies were detected in 232 (28%) patients, and 49 (6%) of these were found to be markedly elevated. In the multivariate analysis, a GCS ≤13 (odds ratio [OR] 8.7, 95% confidence interval [CI] 4.3, 17.7), low systolic blood pressure (OR 4.0, 95% CI 1.6, 9.9), open/multiple bony fractures (OR 2.9, 95% CI 1.4, 6.2), and major tissue wounds (OR 2.8, 95% CI 1.4, 5.6) were independently associated with markedly elevated coagulation studies. Conclusion Hospitalized pediatric blunt trauma patients frequently have minor elevations in ED coagulation studies. Marked elevations occur infrequently and are independently associated with a GCS ≤13, low systolic blood pressure, open/multiple bony fractures, and major tissue wounds.

Abstract:THE INFLUENCE EXERTED by specific brainstem structures upon the state of alertness and patterns of electrocortical activity in man remains poorly defined, despite the continuing interest this problem has held for neurologists. Much of our information derives from the results of skillfully placed lesions in the brainstem of the cat. Such studies suggest that two functionally antagonistic and anatomically separate pathways within the brainstem reticular formation play a crucial role in modulating both the electrical organization and reactivity of the cerebral cortex and the state of alertness of the animal.1-13 In man, only the analysis of welldefined, stable lesions resulting from vascular disease presents a situation which approaches that found in the experimental animal. The reported incidence of EEG abnormalities associated with vascular lesions of the brainstem varies widely but averages about 30% in most large series,14-lQ although in some, as many as 70% of the tracings have been considered abnormal.20921 The EEG changes are usually slight, consisting of diffuse or bilateral slowing, especially in the temporal regions.16-1**20.21 Paroxysmal discharges and sharp activity, also most conspicuous in the temporal leads;lss20-22 focal abnormalities;14 low-voltage fast records;29-25 and generally low-voltage records have also been observed.1BJss20 In the few patients in whom such data have been recorded, the effect of photic stimulation has usually been regarded as normal,14 while sleep studies have been reported as normal or lacking rapid-eye-movement (REM) patterns.14~~6 In general, normal EEG configurations have been considered compatible with small lesions, laterally and caudally situated in the brainstem, while large, medial and rostral infarcts have been thought to be associated with a relatively high incidence of EEG abnormalities.lO.22.27 Unfortunately, such conclusions are based largely upon case studies lacking necropsy verification. There have been few attempts to correlate behavioral and EEG data with the site of brainstem injury. A review of the literature has yielded only 12 cases, with adequate behavioral and EEG studies, in which there was a major lesion in the pons or lower midbrain without significant abnormality in the cerebral hemispheres or rostral midbrain.21.*3,24,2-2 Analysis of this material together with similar data from 8 additional cases form the basis of the present report (see table). Incomplete accounts of 2 of these cases have been previously published.33.34 EEGs were obtained on Grass Model 4 or 6 machines using either 8 or 16 channels and the International 10-20 system of electrode placement. Bipolar and unipolar montages were used in all cases; in the latter instance, a balanced neck-chest lead served as the common reference.

Abstract:Background Opisthorchis viverrini infection is a significant health problem in several countries, especially Southeast Asia. The infection causes acute gastro-hepatic symptoms and also long-term infection leading to carcinogenesis of an aggressive bile duct cancer (cholangiocarcinoma; CCA). Hence, the early diagnosis of O. viverrini infection could be the way out of this situation. Still, stool examination by microscopic-based methods, the current diagnostic procedure is restricted by low parasite egg numbers in the specimen and unprofessional laboratorians. The immunological procedure provides a better chance for diagnosis of the infection. Hence, this study aims to produce single-chain variable fragment (scFv) antibodies for use as a diagnostic tool for O. viverrini infection. Methods This study uses phage display technologies to develop the scFv antibodies against O. viverrini cathepsin F ( Ov CatF). The Ov CatF-deduced amino acid sequence was analyzed and predicted for B-cell epitopes used for short peptide synthesis. The synthetic peptides were used to screen the phage library simultaneously with Ov CatF recombinant protein (r Ov CatF). The potentiated phages were collected, rescued, and reassembled in XL1-blue Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) as a propagative host. The positive clones of phagemids were isolated, and the single-chain variable (scFv) fragments were sequenced, computationally predicted, and molecular docked. The complete scFv fragments were digested from the phagemid, subcloned into the pOPE101 expression vector, and expressed in XL1-blue E. coli. Indirect ELISA and Western analysis were used to verify the detection efficiency. Results The scFv phages specific to Ov CatF were successfully isolated, subcloned, and produced as a recombinant protein. The recombinant scFv antibodies were purified and refolded to make functional scFv. The evaluation of specific recognition of the particular epitopes and detection limit results by both computational and laboratory performances demonstrated that all three recombinant scFv antibodies against Ov CatF could bind specifically to r Ov CatF, and the lowest detection concentration in this study was only one hundred nanograms. Conclusion Our produced scFv antibodies will be the potential candidates for developing a practical diagnostic procedure for O. viverrini infection in humans in the future.

Abstract:Opisthorchis viverrini infection is an emerging disease in Cambodia, especially in central and southeastern areas. However, its status in northern areas bordering Lao PDR has been relatively unknown. The present study was performed to investigate the status of O. viverrini infection among people in Preah Vihear and Stung Treng provinces through fecal examination to detect eggs and recovery of adult flukes from some of the egg-positive cases. Fecal examinations were performed on a total of 1101 people from 10 villages in the 2 provinces using the Kato-Katz thick smear technique. For recovery of adult flukes and other helminth parasites 10 volunteers positive for eggs of Opisthorchis viverrini and/or minute intestinal flukes (Ov/MIF), in Kampong Sangkae village, Preah Vihear province, were administered a single oral dose of 40 mg/kg praziquantel plus 5-10 mg/kg of pyrantel pamoate and purged with 40-50 g magnesium salts. Adult trematodes, together with nematodes and cestodes expelled in diarrheic stools were collected under a stereomicroscope or with the naked eye. The proportion of egg-positive cases for overall liver and intestinal helminths was high but not notably different between the 2 provinces, 65.5% in Preah Vihear versus 64.7% in Stung Treng. The average proportion of Ov/MIF egg-positive cases was 59.8%. A total of 315 adult specimens of O. viverrini were recovered from the 10 volunteers (4-98 specimens per individual; mean, 32). A smaller number of Haplorchis taichui adults, an intestinal fluke, were found mixed-infected in 7 (103 specimens in total; 1-31 per individual; mean, 15) of the 10 volunteers. Adult specimens of hookworms, Enterobius vermicularis, Trichostrongylus sp., and a Taenia tapeworm strobila were recovered in some cases. Based on the results, it has been confirmed that the surveyed areas in Preah Vihear and Stung Treng provinces, Cambodia, are highly endemic areas of O. viverrini infection with a low-grade mixed infection with H. taichui.
Prevalence of opisthorchiid and other endoparasitic infections among cats and dogs in Novosibirsk oblast (Western Siberia, Russia)

Abstract:To determine the current reservoir status and prevalence of Opisthorchis felineus infection in opisthorchiosis-endemic areas, feces samples were collected from 103 cats and 101 dogs admitted to shelters or discount sterilization centers from various districts of Novosibirsk city and from villages and towns along the Ob River (Novosibirsk Oblast). The feces samples were evaluated using two methods simultaneously: the formalin-ether sedimentation assay and a modified flotation assay. The prevalence of opisthorchiid infection was higher among cats (12.6%; 95% confidence interval 6.9-20.6%) than among dogs (4.0%; 95% confidence interval 1.1-9.8%). Overall prevalence of endoparasites among cats was 42.7% (five helminthic and four protozoan species) and among dogs 51.5% (eight helminthic and five protozoan species). Among the parasites found in the dogs, the prevalence of Sarcocystis sp. was the highest (16.8%), and in cats, the highest prevalence was shown by Giardia sp. and Toxocara cati (14.6% for each species). These results confirm the considerable contribution of stray cats and dogs to the maintenance of opisthorchiid eggs in the environment; these data should be taken into account for the development of effective control and education programs.
Feline strongyloidiasis: An insight into its global prevalence and transmission cycle

Abstract:The potential cross-transmission of Strongyloides stercoralis between dogs and humans has become an increasing focus of strongyloidiasis research and control programs. However, the role of cats and wild felids in the maintenance and transmission cycles of human and canine strongyloidiasis has received sparse attention. Feline strongyloidiasis epidemiology remain enigmatic. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the global prevalence of Strongyloides spp. in felines and reviewed cross-species infection studies to elucidate the transmission cycle of some feline Strongyloides species. Literature searched from seven databases identified 42 eligible prevalence studies published between 1985 and 2024. Of these, 44 datasets from 40 studies were included in the meta-analysis. Using a random effect model combined with the Rogan-Gladen method, we estimated the pooled global prevalence of Strongyloides spp. in felines at 13.3% (95% CI: 8.3–18.3%), with rates of 12.2% (95% CI: 6.7–17.8%) in domestic cats ( Felis catus ) and 20.0% (95% CI: 14.9–25.2%) in wild felids. Feline strongyloidiasis was distributed across all six WHO regions, with Africa (49.7%; 95% CI: 40.0–59.3%) and the Western Pacific (46.9%; 95% CI: 42.6–51.1%) showing the highest pooled prevalence. Subgroup analysis revealed a significantly higher prevalence of Strongyloides infection in stray domestic cats (29.2%; 95% CI: 6.3–52.1%) compared to pet cats (9.3%; 95% CI: 3.7–14.9) and shelter cats (4.4; 95% CI: 0–9.0). Historical cross-species transmission studies demonstrated variable susceptibility of cats to human- or canine-derived S. stercoralis . It remains inconclusive whether cats act as a reservoir for S. stercoralis infection in humans or vice versa. Feline strongyloidiasis is a prevalent condition in wild, stray, pet and shelter cats. Much of the available prevalence data does not discriminate to species level, and the role of cross-species transmission in feline S. stercoralis infections remains obscure. Future studies would benefit from utilising molecular genotyping tools to enable species-level phylogenetic differentiation.

Abstract:Gastrointestinal helminth infection is the most common and the easiest infection to infect wild cats or pet cats but is often ignored by the cat owners because sometimes there are no symptoms or a lack of attention from the cat owner to their pet cat. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence and risk factors of gastrointestinal helminth infection in pet cats in Wonogiri District, Central Java. A total of 100 cat samples were evaluated using a questionnaire, then fecal microscopic examination using simple native method, sedimentation, and floatation methods. Data obtained from this study were presented descriptively and analyzed using the Chi-Square test. The result showed that 37 out of 100 fecal samples were found positive infected with gastrointestinal helminth including Toxocara cati and Dipylidium caninum or the prevalence of gastrointestinal helminth infection can be calculated at 37%. The result of the analysis of significant risk factors were breed, number of pet cat owners, grooming, deworming, and vaccination.

Abstract:Understanding the ecological and epidemiological roles of pets in the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is critical for animal and human health, identifying household reservoirs, and predicting the potential enzootic maintenance of the virus. We conducted a longitudinal household transmission study of 76 dogs and cats living with at least one SARS-CoV-2-infected human in Texas and found that 17 pets from 25.6% of 39 households met the national case definition for SARS-CoV-2 infections in animals. This includes three out of seventeen (17.6%) cats and one out of fifty-nine (1.7%) dogs that were positive by RT-PCR and sequencing, with the virus successfully isolated from the respiratory swabs of one cat and one dog. Whole-genome sequences of SARS-CoV-2 obtained from all four PCR-positive animals were unique variants grouping with genomes circulating among people with COVID-19 in Texas. Re-sampling showed persistence of viral RNA for at least 25 d-post initial test. Additionally, seven out of sixteen (43.8%) cats and seven out of fifty-nine (11.9%) dogs harbored SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibodies upon initial sampling, with relatively stable or increasing titers over the 2–3 months of follow-up and no evidence of seroreversion. The majority (82.4%) of infected pets were asymptomatic. ‘Reverse zoonotic’ transmission of SARS-CoV-2 from infected people to animals may occur more frequently than recognized.
Molecular epidemiology and strain diversity of circulating feline Calicivirus in Thai cats

Abstract:Feline calicivirus (FCV) is a significant viral pathogen causing upper respiratory tract and oral diseases in cats. The emergence of the virulent systemic FCV variant (VS-FCV) has raised global concern in the past decade. This study aims to explore the epidemiology, genetic characterization, and diversity of FCV strains circulating among Thai cats. Various sample types, including nasal, oral, and oropharyngeal swabs and fresh tissues, were collected from 184 cats across different regions of Thailand from 2016 to 2021. Using reverse transcription real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), FCV infection was investigated, with additional screening for feline herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1) by qPCR. The detection rates for FCV, FHV-1, and co-infection were 46.7, 65.8, and 31.5%, respectively. Significantly, the odds ratio (OR) revealed a strong association between the detection of a single FCV and the presence of gingivostomatitis lesions (OR: 7.15, 95% CI: 1.89-26.99, p = 0.004). In addition, FCV detection is notably less likely in vaccinated cats (OR: 0.22, 95% CI: 0.07-0.75, p = 0.015). Amino acid sequence analysis based on the VP1 major capsid protein gene of the 14 FCV-Thai (FCV-TH) strains revealed genetic diversity compared to the other 43 global strains (0 to 86.6%). Intriguingly, a vaccine-like FCV variant was detected in one cat. In summary, this study provides insights into the epidemiology and molecular characteristics of FCV diversity within the Thai cat population for the first time. The identification of unique physicochemical characteristics in the capsid hypervariable region of some FCV-TH strains challenges previous hypotheses. Therefore, further exploration of vaccine-like FCV variants is crucial for a comprehensive understanding and to improve viral prevention and control strategies.
Role of socio-cultural and economic factors in cyprinid fish distribution networks and consumption in Lawa Lake region, Northeast Thailand: Novel perspectives on Opisthorchis viverrini transmission dynamics

Abstract:Opisthorchis viverrini (Ov) is a fish-borne parasite endemic in parts of Lao PDR, Cambodia, southern Vietnam and Northeast Thailand (Isaan) where an estimated 10 million people are infected. Human Ov infection, associated with hepatobiliary complications, including cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), occurs when infected fish are consumed raw or undercooked, a longstanding cultural tradition in the region. This mixed- methods descriptive study was carried out in Isaan villages around Lawa Lake, Khon Kaen Province, known for their Ov endemicity. Focus group discussions (FGDs) and in depth interviews (IDIs) were used to explore socio-cultural determinants underlying raw fish consumption practices, and global positioning system (GPS) devices to map local fish distribution networks. Qualitative data affirmed major socio-cultural and dietary lifestyle transitions occurring consequent on recent decades of modernization policies and practices, but also the persistence of Isaan traditional raw-fish eating practices and incorrect beliefs about infection risk avoidance. Fish traders/middlemen purchase most of the catch at the lakeshore and play the dominant role in district market fish distribution networks, at least for the larger and less likely infected, fish species. The lower economic value of the small potentially-infected cyprinid fish means local fishermen typically distribute them free, or sell cheaply, to family and friends, effectively concentrating infection risk in already highly Ov infected villages. Our study confirmed the persistence of traditional Isaan raw-fish meal practices, despite major ongoing socio-cultural lifestyle transitions and decades of Ov infection health education programs. We contend that diffuse socio-cultural drivers underpin this practice, including its role as a valued cultural identity marker. A "fish economics" factor was also evident in the concentration of more likely infected fish back into local villages due to their low economic value at district market level. The complexity of factors supporting "risky" fish-eating traditions in Isaan underscores the importance of integrated liver fluke infection control strategies to draw on transdisciplinary knowledge beyond biomedicine and also embrace participatory protocols for engaging communities in developing, implementing and evaluating interventions.
Hypnosis and autonomy: a moderator analysis.

Abstract:The study focused on autonomy as a moderator variable in the prediction of subjectively reported hypnotic depth. Ss in the experimental part of the study were 56 undergraduate psychology and education majors classified as either high or low in autonomy. Ss who were equated on capacity for absorption were individually administered 1 of 3 hypnotic inductions: an authoritarian induction, a permissive heteroinduction, or a self-hypnosis induction. The study had a double-blind design. The data suggest that situational manipulation has greater impact on low than on high autonomy Ss. Individual-difference variables such as absorption, have greater impact on hypnotic depth for high than for low autonomy Ss. The data indicate that the hypnotic behavior of high autonomy Ss is more likely to be self-congruent and less likely to be demand-congruent. A factor-analytic inquiry of absorption confirmed the importance of affective/regressive capacity for hypnotic functioning for high autonomy Ss. The study supported the alternate-path perspective of hypnosis.
