Abstract:Context: Baccharis psiadioides (Less.) Joch. Müller (Asteraceae) is considered as a producer of bioactive essential oils and is used in south Brazilian folk medicine for its proprieties as stimulant, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory and as an antidote for snake bites. Objective: To verify the antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities of the essential oil of B. psiadioides (EOBP) against antibiotic-resistant Enterococcus faecalis. Materials and methods: The initial evaluation of EOBP activity was conducted by the agar and microdilution methods against 13 antibiotic-resistant E. faecalis strains. The antibiofilm effect was determined by the application of EOBP in the earlier adherent cells or to the stabilized biofilm for 24 h and was evaluated by crystal violet, viability and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) assays. Chemical composition of EOBP was determined by gas chromatography (GC/FID - GC/MS). Results: The MIC values for EOBP were at least 1.25% and 4-16% for agar and microdilution assays, respectively. The EOBP reduced the microbial adherence and the viability of the cells, but did not cause the complete disruption of biofilms. SEM images indicate that EOBP influences the adherence of cells to a surface. The monoterpene β-pinene was the major constituent identified in EOBP. Conclusion: This research shows the ability of EOBP to control resistant E. faecalis strains and to reduce the biofilm amount attached to abiotic surfaces, indicating its role as a promising new natural antimicrobial agent. Moreover, these results further contribute to the growing number of studies of plant natural products which suggest that these compounds can combat resistant microorganisms.
Plant volatiles from the Brazilian restinga with bactericidal activity against multiresistant bacteria

Abstract:This study aimed to evaluate the bactericidal activity of Myrtaceae foliar volatile compounds against strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PAO-1) and Burkholderia cenocepacia (ET-12). Although these bacteria are clinically important to human health, they, along with other bacteria (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus agalactiae), also have a high profile of antimicrobial resistance associated with bovine mastitis. The chemical composition of volatiles found in Myrtaceae foliar volatiles was also characterized. To accomplish this, the essential oil was extracted from dry leaves of Eugenia astringens, Eugenia arenaria and Myrrhinum atropurpureum by hydrodistillation. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined by microdilution in broth. Essential oil from E. astringens leaf could inhibit growth the fives trains by the Agar diffusion method. MIC demonstrated a reduction in bacterial growth by 74% ± 2.8 (P. aeruginosa), 78.3% ±10.5 (B. cenocepacia), 87.1% ± 1.4 (E. coli), 99 % ±0.02 (S. aureus) and 99.9 ±0.01 (S. agalactiae). The terpene α-pinene was detected in all thre especies, especially M. atropurpureum and E. astringens. E. astringens showed a high contente of (E)-caryophyllene.
Chemical profile and biological properties of the Piper corcovadense C.DC. essential oil

Abstract:The essential oil from Piper corcovadense D.DC. (EOPc), an important plant belonging to the Piperaceae family, which is commonly found in the Northern region of Brazil and poorly explored scientifically, was used in this study. Thus, the EOPc was characterized chemically by Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) and the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities and their potential effects on cutaneous melanoma (SK-MEL-28) and healthy peripheral blood mononuclear (PBMC) cells were determined. The major compounds identified in the EOPc were: E -sesquisabinene hydrate, E -caryophyllene, β-pinene, E -β-farnesene, 14-hydroxycaryophyllene, limonene and p -cymene. The EOPc demonstrated antioxidant activity as evaluated by Folin-Ciocalteu reagent (FC) reducing capacity, DPPH, and ABTS methods. The values found were respectively 5.41 ± 0.17 mg GAE mL −1 (GAE: Gallic acid equivalent), 2.88 ± 0.17 μmol TE mL −1 (TE: Trolox equivalent) and 6.26 ± 0.02 μmol TE mL −1 . The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were determined for different bacterial strains. The EOPc at a concentration of 2.61 μg mL −1 exhibited both bactericidal and bacteriostatic properties against Escherichia coli. The EOPc showed potential antitumor activity as it reduced the cell viability of human cutaneous melanoma cells SK-MEL-28. Besides, the EOPc did not exhibit cytotoxic activity against healthy PBMCs, indicating that it does not harm healthy cells at the tested concentrations. The EOPc increased the levels of ROS at concentrations of 250 μg mL −1 . The EOPc also did not stimulate the mobilization of endogenous antioxidant defenses, as assessed by total thiol (PSH) and non-protein thiols (NPSH). Thus, the study suggests that the EOPc has antioxidant and antimicrobial properties due to the presence of specific compounds. It also exhibits antitumor potential against cutaneous melanoma cells while showing no cytotoxicity to healthy PBMCs. It directly influenced ROS levels at the highest tested concentration in the cells, suggesting an antitumor effect related to the intrinsic apoptosis pathway. Nevertheless, while the study has initial findings, the results are promising and indicate an attractive biological potential of P. corcovadense , mainly in human cutaneous melanoma cells.

Abstract:Various pathologies that compromise public health are of bacterial origin. Among the species of importance to human health is Salmonella Typhimurium gastroenteritis agent, Enterobacter aerogenes and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, pathogens causing nosocomial infections in various organs. The Eugenia uniflora L., popularly known as Brazilian cherry, belonging to the Myrtaceae family is a tree native to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest found from Minas Gerais to Rio Grande do Sul. According to the popular medicine the infusion of its leaves has antimicrobial activity, astringent, antidiarrheal, carminative, diuretic, antireumatic, antipyretic, hypotensive, reducing blood cholesterol and uric acid in the urine controller. Based on the above, the study aimed to obtain the essential oil of Surinam cherry sheets, perform chemical characterization of the compounds present in the oil and evaluate the in vitro antibacterial activity on strains of Enterobacter aerogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella Typhimurium. To evaluate the antibacterial activity, we used the disk diffusion test, determination of Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC). Oil yield obtained in the extraction process was 0.65% and bactericidal action was found facing the strains of Enterobacter aerogenes and Salmonella Typhimurium with 3.125% MIC. It has been no biological action of the essential oil on Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Thus, it can be concluded that the essential oil of cherry is an alternative medical means with antibacterial action on Enterobacter aerogenes and Salmonella Typhimurium is considered possible natural source for the development of new drugs.

Abstract:The present work aims to study the chemical composition and the antimicrobial and toxicological properties of the essential oils (EOs) of Apodocephala pauciflora leaves (LEO) and stem bark (BEO). LEO and BEO were extracted from fresh material by hydrodistillation with a yield of 0.1%. They are light, light yellow, strong smelling and dextrorotatory. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis identified 42 components in LEO and 38 in BEO representing 97.54% and 99.44% of the overall composition respectively. In LEO, the major components were α-pinene (27.5%), sabinene (13.62%) and β-pinene (12.0%) and in BEO, α-pinene (34.32%), myrcene (15.1%), sabinene (14.53%). Main components such β-pinene, phellandrene and limonene were common to LEO and BEO but at different rates. However, some components were not common to both EOs: for example, cubenol (5.07%) in LEO was absent in BEO and vice versa humulene (3.91%) in BEO was absent in LEO. Both EOs were effective against all microorganisms tested, including Gram (+) and Gram (-) bacteria and a fungus, with a strain-dependent intensity. BEO was more efficient than LEO. Streptococcus pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Vibrio fischeri and Candida albicans were the most susceptible. LEO was bacteriostatic against Clostridium perfringens and Candida albicans but bactericidal against the other germs tested, whereas BEO was bactericidal against all germs. With LD50 of 2.48 and 2.34 g/kg body weight, LEO and BEO were slightly toxic to mice by oral route. LEO and BEO could be used as alternatives to synthetic antibiotics against several pathogenic microorganisms.

Abstract:Baccharis dracunculifolia DC (Asteraceae) is a Brazilian native bush tree, and its leaf essential oil has been reported to possess some biological activities, but the antimicrobial activity of its aerial part essential oil at the flowering period is unknown or little studied, mainly against agents that cause foodborne diseases. Thus, this study aimed to determine the chemical composition and evaluate the antimicrobial activity of the essential oil of B. dracunculifolia aerial part at flowering period. This essential oil was obtained by hydro distillation and its chemical composition was determined by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The minimum inhibitory concentration, minimum bactericidal concentration, and minimum fungicidal concentration of the essential oil were evaluated against eight bacteria and eight fungi using 96-well microtiter plates. The essential oil yield was 1.8 ± 0.07%, and spathulenol (27%) and trans-nerolidol (23%), both oxygenated sesquiterpenes, were the major compounds found among 30 chemical constituents identified. The essential oil presented bacteriostatic and bactericidal activities, mainly against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and also fungistatic and fungicidal activities. However, its antibacterial activity was more effective than the antifungal one by using the essential oil at lower concentrations. Essential oil of B. dracunculifolia may be a potential alternative for food applications in order to reduce synthetic chemicals in a more sustainable food industry.

Abstract:Pectis brevipedunculata (Gardner) Sch.Bip., known in Brazil as alecrim do campo, is a small Asteraceae family plant with a calming effect and consumed as tea. This species contains components, such as neral and geranial, that display various biological activities, such as leishmanicidal. The aim was to chemically characterize the essential oil (EO) obtained from P. brevipedunculata (EO-PB) by hydrodistillation and a microemulsion formulated with EO (ME-PB), Tween 80 and Transcutol P, assess the leishmanicidal effect against Leishmania (L.) amazonensis promastigotes and cytotoxicity against RAW 264.7. EO-PB and ME-PB were analyzed by Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS). Monoterpene hydrocarbons were noteworthy among the identified compounds. The main EO-PB constituents were α-pinene and limonene, followed by neral and geranial, which were maintained in ME-PB. EO-PB presented an inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 20 μg/mL and ME-PB of 0.93 μg/mL. ME-PB inhibition towards the parasite was 20-fold higher than that of EO-PB. This indicated that EO incorporation to the microemulsion resulted in optimized biological activity. Selectivity indices indicate that ME-PB is more selective concerning parasite inhibition. Thus, ME-PB may comprise an adequate approach against Leishmania, as the inhibitory concentration (IC50) promastigotes was lower than that considered toxic for cells cell cytotoxicity of 50% (CC50).

Abstract:The objective of the study was to carry out phytochemical prospection through colorimetric tests to determine the groups of secondary metabolites and also to determine the total content of phenolic compounds (TPC) present in plant extracts methanol (ME), ethyl acetate (EAE), hexane (HE) and dichloromethane (DE) from the leaves of Myrsine umbellata, as well as to investigate the antimicrobial activity against twelve standard ATCC strains by the broth microdilution technique; the antioxidant potential by the DPPH method and the ABTS method and the antibiofilm potential on the biofilm biomass of standard bacteria by the crystal violet technique and tetrazolium salt reduction (MTT) assay. Phytochemical prospection detected the presence of saponins, steroids, alkaloids, anthocyanins, anthocyanidins, flavonoids, and tannins. The results of the quantitative phytochemical estimation revealed a higher content of total phenolics in DE (280.24 ± 0.037 μM GAE g ext. -1) followed by ME (159.01 ± 0.031 μM GAE g ext. -1). The ME showed the best biological activities when compared to the other extracts tested. We observed antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive Staphylococcus epidermidis strain (MIC 3.12 and MBC 6.25), antioxidant percentage of 92.58% against the DPPH radical and 420.31 μM Trolox g ext. -1 against the ABTS radical, finally showed antibiofilm action against Gram-positive strain Staphylococcus aureus, with eradication of the biomass in 92.58%. The results suggest that EM from M. umbellata represents an alternative source of plant bioactives for the development of natura products.

Abstract:The essential oils (EOs) of Duguetia echinophora, D. riparia, Xylopia emarginata and X. frutescens (Annonaceae) were obtained by hydrodistillation and the chemical composition was analyzed by GC-MS. An antioxidant assay using the ABTS and DPPH radicals scavenging method and cytotoxic assays against Artemia salina were also performed. We evaluated the interaction of the major compounds of the most toxic EO (X. emarginata) with the binding pocket of the enzyme Acetylcholinesterase, a molecular target related to toxicity in models of Artemia salina. The chemical composition of the EO of D. echinophora was characterized by β-phellandrene (39.12%), sabinene (17.08%) and terpinolene (11.17%). Spathulenol (22.22%), caryophyllene oxide (12.21%), humulene epoxide II (11.86%) and allo-aromadendrene epoxide (10.20%) were the major constituents of the EO from D. riparia. Spathulenol (5.65%) and caryophyllene oxide (5.63%) were the major compounds of the EO from X. emarginata. The EO of X. frutescens was characterized by α-pinene (20.84%) and byciclogermacrene (7.85%). The results of the radical scavenger DPPH assays ranged from 15.87 to 69.38% and the highest percentage of inhibition was observed for the EO of X. emarginata, while for ABTS radical scavenging, the antioxidant capacity of EOs varied from 14.61 to 63.67%, and the highest percentage of inhibition was observed for the EO of X. frutescens. The EOs obtained from D. echinophora, X. emarginata and X. frutescens showed high toxicity, while the EO of D. riparia was non-toxic. Because the EO of X. emarginata is the most toxic, we evaluated how its major constituents were able to interact with the Acetylcholinesterase enzyme. The docking results show that the compounds are able to bind to the binding pocket through non-covalent interactions with the residues of the binding pocket. The species X. emarginata and X. frutescens are the most promising sources of antioxidant compounds; in addition, the results obtained for preliminary cytotoxicity of the EOs of these species may also indicate a potential biological activity.
Chemical composition and evaluation of acute toxicological, antimicrobial and modulatory resistance of the extract of Murraya paniculata

Abstract:Context: Murraya paniculata (Linn) JACK (Rutaceae) is used in traditional medicine in the treatment of diabetes, inflammation, and microbial disorders. Objective: This study determined the polyphenol composition and antimicrobial and acute toxicological activity of the hydroethanolic extract of M. paniculata leaves (EEMp). Materials and methods: Chemical composition was evaluated by the Folin-Ciocalteu and AlCl3 assays and by HPLC-DAD. Antibacterial and modulatory activity was determined by the microdilution method. Toxicity was assessed with a single dose of EEMp administered orally at doses of 2000 and 5000 mg/kg body weight/day in male and female Swiss mice. Results: Total phenolic content of the EEMp samples varied from 66.5 to 396.8 mg gallic acid equivalent/g of extract and flavonoid content varied from 0.3 to 31.1 mg quercetin equivalent/g of extract. The principal component identified by HPLC-DAD assay was ellagic acid. The results of oral acute toxicity showed no mortality, changes in hematological parameters, or CNS and ANS toxicities in rats. Biochemical analysis showed a significant increase in glucose and glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase activity and reduction in triglycerides and cholesterol for 5000 and 2000 mg/kg doses, respectively, when compared with the control group. Histopathological evaluation showed no significant microscopic changes. EEMp showed essentially no antimicrobial activity, but when aminoglycosides were combined with EEMp their MIC was reduced. Conclusions: Significant effects were observed in the acute toxicity assay, but they had no clinical relevance. The results suggest that M. paniculata could be used as a source of natural products with antibacterial resistance-modifying activity, with lower toxicity.

Abstract:Essential oil from the leaves of Artemisia vulgaris L. (Compositae) cultivated in Brazil was investigated for its chemical composition and biological activities including antibacterial, antifungal, and anthelmintic. The constituents of essential oils isolated by hydro-distillation were examined by GC-MS and a total of 18 components were identified. The essential oil was dominated by oxygenated sesquiterpenes (44.4%), sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (33.3%), and oxygenated monoterpenes (16.6%). Caryophyllene (37.45%), germacrene D (16.17%), and humulene (13.66%) were the major components. The essential oils from A. vulgaris showed bactericidal and fungicidal properties against Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans, respectively. Anthelmintic activity against Haemonchus contortus was absent in this essential oil. Altogether above results indicate that essential oils from A. vulgaris can be used for various medicinal purposes.

Abstract:This study aimed to characterize chemically and evaluate the cytotoxicity and antioxidant, antifungal and modulatory activities of the essential oil of Eupatorium ballotifolium, collected in the mountainous region of Meruoca in the state of Ceará. The antioxidant activity was investigated by the free radical 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging assay and β-carotene/linoleic-acid oxidation model system. The lethality bioassay was performed using Artemia salina (brine shrimp). The evaluation of the antifungal activity in vitro was performed by broth microdilution using strains of dermatophyte fungi and yeasts. The modulatory activity assays were performed by the checkerboard technique using ketoconazole as standard. Chromatographic analysis associated with mass spectrometry showed the main constituents of E. ballotifolium essential oil were β-caryophyllene (23.59%), thymol methyl ether (12.28%), germacrene D (6.56%) and bicyclogermacrene (6.47%). The brine shrimp lethality assay demonstrated potential biological activity. The essential oil showed better antioxidant action by the β-carotene/linoleic acid assay, with IC50 value of 19.47 µg/mL for essential oil, 11.32 µg/mL for thymol and 22.83 µg/mL for carvacrol, used as test standards. The broth microdilution test demonstrated that the essential oil inhibited fungal growth of all Trichophyton rubrum strains. In the modulation activity assay against strains of Trichophyton rubrum, there was synergism of essential oil on the strains of dermatophyte fungi when combined with ketoconazole. Chemical and Bioactive Evaluation of Essential Oils from Edible and Aromatic Mediterranean Lamiaceae Plants

Abstract:The Lamiaceae family, which includes several well-known aromatic plants, is scientifically relevant due to its essential oils (EOs). In this work, four EOs from Mediterranean species, namely Origanum vulgare L., Rosmarinus officinalis L., Salvia officinalis L., and Thymus vulgaris L., were evaluated for their volatile profiles and the biological activity in vitro to assess their potential use in the food and cosmetic sector. GC/MS analysis revealed dominant compounds, such as carvacrol, thymol, and eucalyptol. Regarding biological action, the samples exhibited antioxidant, cytotoxic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antifungal activities, with O. vulgare and T. officinalis standing out. T. vulgaris showed the lowest EC50 in the reducing power assay, and O. vulgare had the lowest EC50 in the DPPH assay. Most EOs also displayed excellent anti-inflammatory responses and antifungal properties, with O. vulgare and T. vulgaris also demonstrating antibacterial activity. All EOs from Mediterranean species showed cytotoxicity against tumoral cell lines. Overall, the selected EOs stood out for their interesting bioactivities, with the obtained results underscoring their potential as natural preservatives and bioactive agents in various industrial applications, including food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics.

Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevance Pectis elongata, a herbaceous species that is known in northern Brazil as "cominho" or "limãozinho", is traditionally used in the region for the treatment of fevers, colds, hypotension, genitourinary and gastric disorders, and pain. Aim of the study Determine the chemical composition and acute oral toxicity and evaluate whether Pectis elongata essential oil (PeEO) has antiedema and antinociceptive activity. Materials and methods The chemical composition was determined using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and the degree of toxicity determined by the LD 50 . The antiedema and antinociceptive potential was evaluated via the λ-carrageenan-induced paw edema test and formalin test, respectively. Results Citral (geranial and neral) was characterized as a major component of the PeEO, representing 89% of the total identified compounds. According to OECD criteria (2002), the EO was considered non-toxic since it presented LD 50 values over 2000 mg kg −1 . Its antiedema potential was observed at doses of 200 and 400 mg kg −1 (p ≤ 0.05). At a dose of 400 mg kg −1 , PeEO also showed antinociceptive potential (p ≤ 0.05), both in the neurogenic phase and in the inflammatory phase. Conclusions PeEO, which is rich in citral, did not induce any characteristic signs of acute oral toxicity and was also efficient in reducing carrageenan-induced paw edema, in addition to presenting antinociceptive potential and acting on both central and peripheral pain. It is thus a promising candidate for the development of a new herbal medicine with anti-inflammatory and analgesic action.

Anticariogenic Activity of Three Essential Oils from Brazilian Piperaceae

Abstract:The current trend toward using natural food additives, cosmetics, and medicines has motivated industries to substitute synthetic compounds for natural products. Essential oils (EOs) from medicinal plants are a well-known source of chemical compounds that display several interesting biological activities, including antimicrobial action. In this study, we investigated the antibacterial activity of EOs extracted from three Piperaceae species collected in the Brazilian Amazon region against a representative panel of cariogenic bacteria. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the essential oils extracted from Peperomia pellucida (PP-EO), Piper marginatum (PM-EO), and Piper callosum (PC-EO) was determined against Streptococcus mutans, S. mitis, S. sanguinis, S. salivarius, S. sobrinus, Enterococcus faecalis, and Lactobacillus casei by using the microplate microdilution method. PM-EO, PC-EO, and PP-EO displayed antibacterial activity against all the tested cariogenic bacteria. PM-EO displayed the best inhibitory activity, with MIC values ranging from 50 to 500 µg/mL. The lowest MIC values were obtained for PM-EO against S. mitis (MIC = 75 μg/mL), Lactobacillus casei (MIC = 50 μg/mL), and S. mutans (MIC = 50 μg/mL). Gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis allowed the chemical composition of all the EOs to be identified. The main constituents of PM-EO, PC-EO, and PP-EO were 3,4-(methylenedioxy)propiophenone, α-pinene, and dillapiole, respectively. Finally, the compounds that were exclusively detected in PM-EO are highlighted. Our results suggest that PM-EO may be used in products for treating dental caries and periodontal diseases.

Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevance: Schinus terebinthifolia Raddi (Anacardiaceae) is rich in essential oil, distinguished by a predominance of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, it being widely used in traditional medicine for the treatment of inflammations. Aim of study: This study's objective was to investigate the chemical composition of the essential oil of S. terebinthifolia (EOST) collected in six states of Brazil, evaluate its anti-inflammatory effects in mice, and analyze the histochemistry and micromorphology of leaves and stems. Materials and methods: Aerial parts of S. terebinthifolia were collected in six states of Brazil, and the essential oil was extracted by hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The histochemistry and micromorphology of leaves and stems were performed using standard reagents, light and field emission scanning electron microscopy, beyond energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The EOST were evaluated for anti-inflammatory activity and hyperalgesia using the carrageenan-induced paw edema methodology. Results: The EOST showed variation across the six states in its yield (0.40%-0.86%) and chemical composition: hydrocarbon monoterpenes (28.76%-47.73%), sesquiterpenes, (31.43%-41.76%), oxygenated monoterpenes (14.31%-19.57%), and oxygenated sesquiterpenes (4.87%-14.38%). Both α-pinene and limonene were predominant constituents of essential in five regions, except for one state where α-phellandrene and limonene were the dominant components. A comprehensive description of the leaf and stem micromorphology and histochemistry was performed. In the in vivo testing, all EOST samples exerted antiedematogenic and anti-hyperalgesic effects, when tested in a carrageenan-induced paw inflammation (mechanical and thermal hyperalgesia) model with oral doses of 30 mg/kg. Conclusion: Our results indicate that the EOST samples collected in six Brazilian states differed in their chemical composition but not their anti-inflammatory and antihyperalgesic effects, which was correlated with the synergistic effect of its components, collaborating the etnhopharmacologycal use of this plant due to its an anti-inflammatory effect. Also, micromorphology and histochemistry of leaves and stems presented in this study provide anatomical and microchemical information, which aids species identification.

Abstract:The present study provides a comprehensive analysis of the chemical composition of essential oils from species of the Myrcia genus and their applications. The compiled results highlight the chemical diversity and biological activities of these oils, emphasizing their potential importance for various therapeutic and industrial applications. The findings reveal that Myrcia essential oils present a variety of bioactive compounds, such as monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, which demonstrate antimicrobial activities against a range of microorganisms, including Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as yeasts. Furthermore, this study highlights the phytotoxic activity of these oils, indicating their potential for weed control. The results also point to the insecticidal potential of Myrcia essential oils against a range of pests, showing their viability as an alternative to synthetic pesticides. Additionally, species of the genus Myrcia have demonstrated promising hypoglycemic effects, suggesting their potential in diabetes treatment. This comprehensive synthesis represents a significant advancement in understanding Myrcia essential oils, highlighting their chemical diversity and wide range of biological activities. However, the need for further research is emphasized to fully explore the therapeutic and industrial potential of these oils, including the identification of new compounds, understanding of their mechanisms of action, and evaluation of safety and efficacy in different contexts.

Abstract:Introduction Lippia alba is a wild semi-shrubby species that grows in countries like Ecuador, its extracts have significant bioactive compounds. However, the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of L. alba essential oil (EO) have not been given importance in this region. The present study aimed to evaluate the physicochemical characteristics of the extracts and biological activities of L. alba EO. Methods A unifactorial design was used; and physicochemical variables (pH, density, and refractive index), antioxidant and antimicrobial capacities were explored using standard methods. Fractions of L. alba EO were analyzed by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS). Results The density, pH, refractive index, and phenolic content of L. alba EO were found to be 0.95g mL –1 , 5.5, 1.51, and 918 mg L –1 , respectively. An antioxidant activity of 23.08 mg L –1 was observed by the ABTS (2,2′-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic)) method, while 14.81 mg L –1 was observed by the FRAP (Ferric reducing antioxidant power) method. EO of L. alba has presented a greater antimicrobial activity against different Gram-negative than Gram-positive bacteria. EO of L. alba showed an inhibitory zone of 56.7 mm and 9.7 mm against Photobacterium damselae sub sp. piscicida DSM 22834 and Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633, respectively. Conclusions The results of the present investigation clearly indicated that the EO of L. alba has potential antioxidant and antimicrobial activities in vitro analysis, which are important indications that this extract can be applied in different industries, such as pharmaceutical industry, food industry and others.

Abstract:This study aims to investigate the essential oil from leaves of E. pohliana (EOEP) in regard to its chemical composition, antimicrobial and drug‐enhancing activity, as well as the reduction of fungal virulence capacity. Chemical characterization using GC‐MS showed as major components the sesquiterpenes δ‐cadinene, Epi‐α‐Muurolol, and bicyclogermacrene. The results of antibacterial tests indicated that Staphylococcus aureus was more sensitive to EOEP, that also enhanced the efficacy of gentamicin, erythromycin, and norfloxacin. EOEP exhibited antifungal properties against Candida albicans, in addition to potentiating the effectiveness of fluconazole against Candida tropicalis. It showed anti‐virulence effects in all fungal strains. These findings underscore Eugenia pohliana as a potential candidate for the prospection of novel therapeutic agents to treat infectious diseases caused by resistant microbes.
