Abstract:Ice cores have revolutionized our views of the Earth system. They record past climatic and environmental parameters that range on time scales from synoptic events to hundreds of thousands of years. For instance, the Vostok ice core reached an age of 420 ka (thousand years) (Figure 1), revealing a close linkage between climate and greenhouse gas concentrations over the last four glacial-interglacial cycles (Petit et al., 1999). Up to now, the longest ice core record is dated back to 800 ka from the Antarctic EPICA Dome C ice core (Jouzel et al., 2007). One of the most important findings from this record is that the present concentrations of primary greenhouse gases (i.e., CO2, CH4 and N2O) are at higher levels than any time during the past 800 ka, leading to a wide concern about greenhouse gas emissions from human activities and their roles in recent global warming.

Abstract:Over the past eight hundred thousand years, glacial–interglacial cycles oscillated with a period of one hundred thousand years ('100k world'<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1692-3#ref-CR1">1</a>). Ice core and ocean sediment data have shown that atmospheric carbon dioxide, Antarctic temperature, deep ocean temperature, and global ice volume correlated strongly with each other in the 100k world<a href="#ref-CR2">2</a>,<a href="#ref-CR3">3</a>,<a href="#ref-CR4">4</a>,<a href="#ref-CR5">5</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1692-3#ref-CR6">6</a>. Between about 2.8 and 1.2 million years ago, glacial cycles were smaller in magnitude and shorter in duration ('40k world'<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1692-3#ref-CR7">7</a>). Proxy data from deep-sea sediments suggest that the variability of atmospheric carbon dioxide in the 40k world was also lower than in the 100k world<a href="#ref-CR8">8</a>,<a href="#ref-CR9">9</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1692-3#ref-CR10">10</a>, but we do not have direct observations of atmospheric greenhouse gases from this period. Here we report the recovery of stratigraphically discontinuous ice more than two million years old from the Allan Hills Blue Ice Area, East Antarctica. Concentrations of carbon dioxide and methane in ice core samples older than two million years have been altered by respiration, but some younger samples are pristine. The recovered ice cores extend direct observations of atmospheric carbon dioxide, methane, and Antarctic temperature (based on the deuterium/hydrogen isotope ratio δDice, a proxy for regional temperature) into the 40k world. All climate properties before eight hundred thousand years ago fall within the envelope of observations from continuous deep Antarctic ice cores that characterize the 100k world. However, the lowest measured carbon dioxide and methane concentrations and Antarctic temperature in the 40k world are well above glacial values from the past eight hundred thousand years. Our results confirm that the amplitudes of glacial–interglacial variations in atmospheric greenhouse gases and Antarctic climate were reduced in the 40k world, and that the transition from the 40k to the 100k world was accompanied by a decline in minimum carbon dioxide concentrations during glacial maxima.

Abstract:Global warming has caused widespread surface lowering of mountain glaciers. By comparing two firn cores collected in 2018 and 2020 from Corbassière glacier in Switzerland, we demonstrate how vulnerable these precious archives of past environmental conditions have become. Within two years, the soluble impurity records were destroyed by melting. The glacier is now irrevocably lost as an archive for reconstructing major atmospheric aerosol components.

Abstract:The present article responds to the food engineering community's growing interest in an emerging and lauded approach to food preservation, popularised by its developers as 'isochoric freezing'. A strong campaign in the scientific literature and mass media has recently promoted this technique as a universal replacement for traditional food freezing and the frozen supply chain by highlighting a number of alleged advantages of 'isochoric freezing'. Some of these claims therefore require a more neutral and critical assessment against the background of the today's state of the art in food freezing technologies. Hence, this article spotlights several concerns regarding the plausibility, energy expenditure, resource efficiency, process rate, throughput and safety of 'isochoric freezing', as well as the correct use of food refrigeration terminology. The aspects considered are intended to make food scientists, technologists and engineers more aware of the real capabilities and the application perspectives of this still immature mode of refrigerated food processing.

Abstract:The presence of exceptionally old ice and relative ease of access make Antarctic blue-ice areas (BIAs) attractive paleoclimate archives. However, only a handful of BIAs, mostly situated in West Antarctica and along the Transantarctic Mountains, have been investigated for this purpose. Here, we present the age of surface ice from the Grove Mountains BIA in Princess Elizabeth Land, East Antarctica, determined by measuring 81 Kr in the trapped air. Two samples yield an average age of 143-29+33 kyr. Together with the reported terrestrial age of a chondrite, we conclude that the Grove Mountains BIA holds considerable potential for paleoclimate studies.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The signs of climate change are undeniable, and the impact of these changes on ecosystem function heavily depends on the response of microbes that underpin the food web. Antarctic ice shelf is a massive mass of floating ice that extends from the continent into the ocean, exerting a profound influence on global carbon cycles. Beneath Antarctic ice shelves, marine ice stores valuable genetic information, where marine microbial communities before the industrial revolution are archived. Here, in this proof-of-concept, by employing a combination of single-cell technologiesand metagenomics, we have been able to sequence frozen microbial DNA (≈300 years old) stored in the marine ice core B15 collected from the Filchnner-Ronne Ice Shelf. Metagenomic data indicated that Proteobacteria and Thaumarchaeota (e.g., Nitrosopumilus spp.), followed by Actinobacteria (e.g., Actinomarinales), were abundant. Remarkably, our data allow us to “travel to the past” and calibrate genomic and genetic evolutionary changes for ecologically relevant microbes and functions, such as Nitrosopumilus spp., preserved in the marine ice (≈300 years old) with those collected recently in seawater under an ice shelf (year 2017). The evolutionary divergence for the ammonia monooxygenase gene amoA involved in chemolithoautotrophy was about 0.88 amino acid and 2.8 nucleotide substitution rate per 100 sites in a century, while the accumulated rate of genomic SNPs was 2,467 per 1 Mb of genome and 100 years. Whether these evolutionary changes remained constant over the last 300 years or accelerated during post-industrial periods remains an open question that will be further elucidated. IMPORTANCE Several efforts have been undertaken to predict the response of microbes under climate change, mainly based on short-term microcosm experiments under forced conditions. A common concern is that manipulative experiments cannot properly simulate the response of microbes to climate change, which is a long-term evolutionary process. In this proof-of-concept study with a limited sample size, we demonstrate a novel approach yet to be fully explored in science for accessing genetic information from putative past marine microbes preserved under Antarctic ice shelves before the industrial revolution. This potentially allows us estimating evolutionary changes as exemplified in our study. We advocate for gathering a more comprehensive Antarctic marine ice core data sets across various periods and sites. Such a data set would enable the establishment of a robust baseline, facilitating a better assessment of the potential effects of climate change on key genetic signatures of microbes.

Abstract:Using the past to inform the future The late Quaternary paleorecord, within the past ∼130,000 years, can help to inform present-day management of the Earth's ecosystems and biota under climate change. Fordham et al. review when and where rapid climate transitions can be found in the paleoclimate record. They show how such events in Earth's history can shape our understanding of the consequences of future global warming, including rates of biodiversity loss, changes in ecosystem structure and function, and degradation in the goods and services that these ecosystems provide to humanity. They also highlight how recent developments at the intersection of paleoecology, paleoclimatology, and macroecology can provide opportunities to anticipate and manage the responses of species and ecosystems to changing climates in the Anthropocene. Abstract:We present the first successful 81Kr-Kr radiometric dating of ancient polar ice. Krypton was extracted from the air bubbles in four ~350 kg polar ice samples from Taylor Glacier in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, and dated using Atom Trap Trace Analysis (ATTA). The 81Kr radiometric ages agree with independent age estimates obtained from stratigraphic dating techniques with a mean absolute age offset of 6 +/- 2.5 ka. Our experimental methods and sampling strategy are validated by 1) 85Kr and 39Ar analyses that show the samples to be free of modern air contamination, and 2) air content measurements that show the ice did not experience gas loss. We estimate the error in the 81Kr ages due to past geomagnetic variability to be below 3 ka. We show that ice from the previous interglacial period (MIS 5e, 130-115 ka before present) can be found in abundance near the surface of Taylor Glacier. Our study paves the way for reliable radiometric dating of ancient ice in blue ice areas and margin sites where large samples are available, greatly enhancing their scientific value as archives of old ice and meteorites. At present, ATTA 81Kr analysis requires a 40-80 kg ice sample; as sample requirements continue to decrease 81Kr dating of ice cores is a future possibility.

Abstract:Among the paleoclimate archives, we may take advantage of ice cores to directly measure greenhouse compositions of ancient air. Nevertheless, ice cores from deep drilling projects recover limited amount of ice for a given time period and hence limiting the studies that need an extensive amount of ice such as trace gas isotopes. In contrast, blue ice areas (BIAs) may provide a large amount of ancient ice outcropped at the surface. However, ice flow makes the blue ice stratigraphy complicated in many areas, and accordingly makes it difficult to reconstruct a continuous stratigraphy. Recently, the oldest ice was discovered at Allan Hills BIA (about 2.7 Ma). However, the stratigraphy is not continuous for the older part. Here we show preliminary results from Larsen Glacier, East Antarctica. The Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) results show parallel ice layers near the surface with dips of 1-5&#176; and indicate that the ice thickness ranges of 200&#8211;400 m. &#948;Dice of a vertical core sample matches well with that in the horizontally spaced surface ice samples. Greenhouse gas concentrations are significantly altered at shallow depths of < ~4.5 m. The &#948;18Oatm, CH4 concentration and stable isotopes of ice (&#948;18Oice, &#948;Dice) indicate that the Larsen BIA cover the Last Glacial Termination at the studied sites. 81Kr ages, corrected by 85Kr for the modern air contamination, are less than 54 ka, supporting the ages constrained by the other chemistry data.

Abstract:Shallow firn cores, in addition to a near-basal ice core, were recovered in 2018 from the Quelccaya ice cap (5470 m a.s.l) in the Cordillera Vilcanota, Peru, and in 2017 from the Nevado Illimani glacier (6350 m a.s.l) in the Cordillera Real, Bolivia. The two sites are similar to 450 km apart. Despite meltwater percolation resulting from warming, particle-based trace element records (e.g. Fe, Mg, K) in the Quelccaya and Illimani shallow cores retain well-preserved signals. The firn core chronologies, established independently by annual layer counting, show a convincing overlap indicating the two records contain comparable signals and therefore capture similar regional scale climatology. Trace element records at a similar to 1-4 cm resolution provide past records of anthropogenic emissions, dust sources, volcanic emissions, evaporite salts and marine-sourced air masses. Using novel ultra-high-resolution (120 mu m) laser technology, we identify annual layer thicknesses ranging from 0.3 to 0.8 cm in a section of 2000-year-old radiocarbon-dated near-basal ice which compared to the previous annual layer estimates suggests that Quelccaya ice cores drilled to bedrock may be older than previously suggested by depth-age models. With the information collected from this study in combination with past studies, we emphasize the importance of collecting new surface-to-bedrock ice cores from at least the Quelccaya ice cap, in particular, due to its projected disappearance as soon as the 2050s.
A Tibetan Ice Core Covering the Past 1,300 Years Radiometrically Dated with 39 Ar

Abstract:Ice cores from alpine glaciers are unique archives of past global and regional climate conditions. However, recovering climate records from these ice cores is often hindered by the lack of a reliable chronology, especially in the age range of 100 to 500 anni (a) for which radiometric dating has not been available so far. We report on radiometric 39 Ar dating of an ice core from the Tibetan Plateau and the construction of a chronology covering the past 1,300 a using the obtained 39 Ar ages. This is made possible by advances in the analysis of 39 Ar using the laser-based detection method atom trap trace analysis, resulting in a twofold increase in the upper age limit of 39 Ar dating. By measuring the anthropogenic 85 Kr along with 39 Ar we quantify and correct modern air contamination, thus removing a major systematic uncertainty of 39 Ar dating. Moreover, the 85 Kr data for the top part of the ice core provide information on firn processes, including the age difference between the ice and its enclosed gas. This first application of 39 Ar and 85 Kr to an ice core facilitates further ice cores from nonpolar glaciers to be used for recovering climate records of the Common Era, a period including pronounced anomalies such as the Little Ice Age and the Medieval Warm Period.

Abstract:Late Pleistocene and Holocene ground ice are common throughout the Arctic. Some forms of relict ground ice preserve local meteoric water, and their stable oxygen‐ and hydrogen‐isotope ratios can be used to reconstruct past air temperatures. In this paper, we review the formation and sampling of two forms of relict ground ice—wedge ice and pore ice—and recent (2010–2019) advances in paleoclimatological studies of ground‐ice stable isotope records in the Arctic. Recent advances are attributed to better chronological constraints and refined understandings of the systematics and seasonality of relict wedge ice and pore ice. A rich network of ice‐wedge records has emerged, primarily from the Siberian Arctic, whereas pore‐ice records are less common. The ice‐wedge network depicts a robust pattern of late Pleistocene cooling, and remarkably similar temperature depressions during Marine Isotope Stages 3 and 2. Very high‐resolution wedge‐ and pore‐ice stable isotope chronologies have been established recently and used to reconstruct winter and summer climate histories and to assess seasonal dependencies in insolation‐forced climate. Reports of ancient (>125 ka BP) ground ice demonstrate its long‐term persistence, and its potential to expand our knowledge of Quaternary climate dynamics in the terrestrial Arctic.

Abstract:I believe that the vulnerability of soil carbon to warming is one of the largest sources of uncertainty in the projection of future climate change. If, in a warmer world, bacteria decompose organic soil matter faster, releasing carbon dioxide, this will set up a positive feedback loop, speeding up global warming. I was stunned to learn, from an article by Charles Tarnocai of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Ottawa and his colleagues, that the global mass of soil carbon needs to be revised upwards by a frightening amount: from the 2,500 billion tonnes of carbon previously accounted for to more than 4,000 billion tonnes (C. Tarnocai et al. Glob. Biogeochem. Cycles doi:10.1029/2008GB003327; 2009). This is a result of the previously overlooked presence of vast amounts of peat, Siberian yedoma deposits (organic-rich permafrost) and other frozen carbon stores at high latitudes. These massive stores deserve special attention because the boreal and arctic regions that house many of them are expected to warm more rapidly than average in the coming decades. Even a small leakage from these stores could cause an explosion in the growth rate of atmospheric CO2 as well as methane, a potent greenhouse gas emitted by flooded thawed soils. So what do these findings mean for the role of high latitudes in the Earth system? We need more extensive field observations to monitor the stability of frozen carbon, and studies to measure the decomposition rates of such stores. And we should incorporate these processes into climate models such as those used by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. If I had to pick just one new PhD subject right now, exploring this terra incognita of frozen carbon and its impact on climate change would be the one. MATERIALS

Abstract:Paleoclimate reconstructions from ice core records can be hampered due to the lack of a reliable chronology, especially when the stratigraphy is disturbed and conventional dating methods cannot be readily applied. The noble-gas radioisotopes 81Kr and 39Ar can in these cases provide robust constraints as they yield absolute, radiometric ages. 81Kr (half-life 229 ka) covers the time span of 30-1300 ka, which is particularly relevant for polar ice cores, whereas 39Ar (half-life 268 a) with a dating range of 50-1800 a is suitable for alpine glaciers. For a long time the use of 81Kr and 39Ar for dating of ice samples was impeded by the lack of a detection technique that can measure its extremely small abundance at a reasonable sample size.We present 81Kr and 39Ar dating of Antarctic and Tibetan ice cores with the detection method Atom Trap Trace Analysis (ATTA), using 5-10 kg of ice for 81Kr and 2-5 kg for 39Ar. Recent studies in Antarctica include 81Kr dating in ice cores from the Larsen Blue ice area, Talos Dome and Epica Dome C. Moreover, we have used 39Ar for dating an ice core from central Tibet covering the past 1500 years, in order to validate a previous timescale based on layer counting. The studies demonstrate how 81Kr and 39Ar can provide age constraints and complement other methods in developing an ice core chronology. As the sample size requirement for 81Kr and 39Ar analysis still hinders its use in ice cores, developments on the ATTA systems are in progress to further decrease the sample size and increase the dating precision. A New Sample Preparation System for Micro-14C Dating of Glacier Ice with a First Application to a High Alpine Ice Core from Colle Gnifetti (Switzerland)

Abstract:Abstract Radiometric dating of glacier ice is an essential tool where stratigraphic dating methods cannot be applied. This study focuses on Alpine glacier ice and presents a new sample preparation system for dating of glacier ice samples via radiocarbon (14C) dating of the microscopic particulate organic carbon (POC) fraction incorporated in the ice matrix. An adaptable, low-cost inline filtration-oxidation-unit (REFILOX) has been developed, which for the first time unifies all sample preparation steps from ice filtration to CO2 quantification in one closed setup. A systematic 14C investigation of modern European aerosol samples revealed that a POC combustion temperature of 340°C provides the best representation of the real sample age. A very low process blank of maximally 0.3±0.1 µgC now enables 14C dating of high Alpine ice samples, where POC concentrations are generally low (typically 10–50 µgC/kg), in an ice sample mass range of 300–500 g. In a first successful application, the method was used to obtain age constraints for an ice core from the cold, high Alpine firn saddle Colle Gnifetti (Switzerland). Analysis of the bottom ice core sections revealed a basal age of 4171–3923 cal yr BP but also a so far enigmatic discontinuity in the age-depth relationship.

Abstract:The persistence and size of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) through the Pleistocene is uncertain. This is important because reconstructing changes in the GrIS determines its contribution to sea level rise during prior warm climate periods and informs future projections. To understand better the history of Greenland's ice, we analyzed glacial till collected in 1993 from below 3 km of ice at Summit, Greenland. The till contains plant fragments, wood, insect parts, fungi, and cosmogenic nuclides showing that the bed of the GrIS at Summit is a long-lived, stable land surface preserving a record of deposition, exposure, and interglacial ecosystems. Knowing that central Greenland was tundra-covered during the Pleistocene informs the understanding of Arctic biosphere response to deglaciation.

Abstract:Much of our understanding of Earth’s past climate comes from the measurement of oxygen and carbon isotope variations in deep-sea benthic foraminifera. Yet, long intervals in existing records lack the temporal resolution and age control needed to thoroughly categorize climate states of the Cenozoic era and to study their dynamics. Here, we present a new, highly resolved, astronomically dated, continuous composite of benthic foraminifer isotope records developed in our laboratories. Four climate states—Hothouse, Warmhouse, Coolhouse, Icehouse—are identified on the basis of their distinctive response to astronomical forcing depending on greenhouse gas concentrations and polar ice sheet volume. Statistical analysis of the nonlinear behavior encoded in our record reveals the key role that polar ice volume plays in the predictability of Cenozoic climate dynamics.
