Abstract:The BLEBeacon dataset is a collection of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) advertisement packets/traces generated from BLE beacons carried by people following their daily routine inside a university building. A network of Raspberry Pi 3 (RPi)-based edge devices were deployed inside a multi-floor facility continuously gathering BLE advertisement packets and storing them in a cloud-based environment. The data were collected during an IRB (Institutional Review Board forhe Protection of Human Subjects in Research) approved one-month trial. Each facility occupant/participant was handed a BLE beacon to carry with him at all times. The focus is on presenting a real-life realization of a location-aware sensing infrastructure, that can provide insights for smart sensing platforms, crowd-based applications, building management, and user-localization frameworks. This work describes and documents the published BLEBeacon dataset.

Abstract:The Internet of Things (IoT) can enable smart infrastructures to provide advanced services to the users. New technological advancement can improve our everyday life, even simple tasks as a visit to the museum. In this article, an indoor localization system is presented, to enhance the user experience in a museum. In particular, the proposed system relies on Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons proximity and localization capabilities to automatically provide the users with cultural contents related to the observed artworks. At the same time, a received signal strength-based technique is used to estimate the location of the visitor in the museum. An Android application is developed to estimate the distance from the exhibits and collect useful analytics regarding each visit and provide a recommendation to the users. Moreover, the application implements a simple Kalman filter in the smartphone, without the need of the cloud, to improve localization, precision and accuracy. Experimental results on distance estimation, location, and detection accuracy show that BLE beacon is a promising solution for an interactive smart museum. The proposed system has been designed to be easily extensible to the IoT technologies and its effectiveness has been evaluated through experimentation.

Abstract:The demand to enhance distance estimation and location accuracy in a variety of Non-Line-of-Sight (NLOS) indoor environments has boosted investigation into infrastructure-less ranging and collaborative positioning approaches. Unfortunately, capturing the required measurements to support such systems is tedious and time-consuming, as it requires simultaneous measurements using multiple mobile devices, and no such database are available in literature. This article presents a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) database, including Received-Signal-Strength (RSS) and Ground-Truth (GT) positions, for indoor positioning and ranging applications, using mobile devices as transmitters and receivers. The database is composed of three subsets: one devoted to the calibration in an indoor scenario; one for ranging and collaborative positioning under Non-Line-of-Sight conditions; and one for ranging and collaborative positioning in real office conditions. As a validation of the dataset, a baseline analysis for data visualization, data filtering and collaborative distance estimation applying a path-loss based on the Levenberg-Marquardt Least Squares Trilateration method are included.

Abstract:Indoor location estimation is essential technology when we analyse the participants' activities in large-scale exhibition. There are some problems with existing methods such as PDR, ultrasound and laser range finder: installation location of measurement equipment at large site, cost for measurement equipment, and necessity of smartphone application. We focus on Bluetooth Low Energy(BLE). Currently, BLE technology is used as proximity notification for smartphones and cannot detect the exact distance between two BLE devices. This is because BLE radiowave is unstable and signal strength changes every time at the same distance. In this paper, we propose a location estimation method which utilizes BLE beacon tags and single board computers. In contrast to conventional ways using location-fixed BLE beacons, BLE beacon tags are distributed to participants at the event. Signal strengths of BLE advertising packets captured by multiple location-fixed scanners are used for location estimation. The method requires less cost for equipment and labor of installing an application. It can be used without complex initial setting. We had a data collection experiment at real large-scale exhibition. We estimate locations of participants by applying the proposed method to the collected data, then evaluate accuracy of estimation and analyse the activities such as the time of longer stay booths based on participants' occupation. As a result, we could track the movement of the participants to some meters error and find the characteristic booths based on longer-stay booths per occupations.

Abstract:Art Museums traditionally employ observations and surveys to enhance their knowledge of visitors' behavior and experience. However, these approaches often produce spatially and temporally limited empirical evidence and measurements. Only recently has the ubiquity of digital technologies revolutionized the ability to collect data on human behavior. Consequently, the greater availability of large-scale datasets based on quantifying visitors' behavior provides new opportunities to apply computational and comparative analytical techniques. In this paper, we attempt to analyze visitors' behavior in the Louvre Museum from anonymized longitudinal datasets collected from noninvasive Bluetooth sensors. We examine visitors' length of stay in the museum and consider this relationship with occupation density around artwork. This data analysis increases the knowledge and understanding of museum professionals related to the experience of visitors.

Abstract:The new technologies characterizing the Internet of Things (IoT) allow realizing real smart environments able to provide advanced services to the users. Recently, these smart environments are also being exploited to renovate the users' interest on the cultural heritage, by guaranteeing real interactive cultural experiences. In this paper, we design and validate an indoor location-aware architecture able to enhance the user experience in a museum. In particular, the proposed system relies on a wearable device that combines image recognition and localization capabilities to automatically provide the users with cultural contents related to the observed artworks. The localization information is obtained by a Bluetooth low energy (BLE) infrastructure installed in the museum. Moreover, the system interacts with the Cloud to store multimedia contents produced by the user and to share environment-generated events on his/her social networks. Finally, several location-aware services, running in the system, control the environment status also according to users' movements. These services interact with physical devices through a multiprotocol middleware. The system has been designed to be easily extensible to other IoT technologies and its effectiveness has been evaluated in the MUST museum, Lecce, Italy.

Abstract:We propose to use ambient sound as a privacy-aware source of information for COVID-19-related social distance monitoring and contact tracing. The aim is to complement currently dominant Bluetooth Low Energy Received Signal Strength Indicator (BLE RSSI) approaches. These often struggle with the complexity of Radio Frequency (RF) signal attenuation, which is strongly influenced by specific surrounding characteristics. This in turn renders the relationship between signal strength and the distance between transmitter and receiver highly non-deterministic. We analyze spatio-temporal variations in what we call “ambient sound fingerprints”. We leverage the fact that ambient sound received by a mobile device is a superposition of sounds from sources at many different locations in the environment. Such a superposition is determined by the relative position of those sources with respect to the receiver. We present a method for using the above general idea to classify proximity between pairs of users based on Kullback–Leibler distance between sound intensity histograms. The method is based on intensity analysis only, and does not require the collection of any privacy sensitive signals. Further, we show how this information can be fused with BLE RSSI features using adaptive weighted voting. We also take into account that sound is not available in all windows. Our approach is evaluated in elaborate experiments in real-world settings. The results show that both Bluetooth and sound can be used to differentiate users within and out of critical distance (1.5 m) with high accuracies of 77% and 80% respectively. Their fusion, however, improves this to 86%, making evident the merit of augmenting BLE RSSI with sound. We conclude by discussing strengths and limitations of our approach and highlighting directions for future work.

Assessment of a Smart Phone-Based Indoor Localization Solution for Improving Context Awareness in the Construction Industry

Abstract:Context awareness has the potential to improve various work processes in the construction industry, by automating the delivery of location specific information for a wide range of onsite information-intensive tasks, and supporting crucial management and decision making processes. Implementation of context awareness relies on an accurate and cost-efficient localization solution. Current indoor localization solutions require significant investments on hardware, and require users to carry additional beacons. This study addresses these limitations by proposing a solution that is built on the recent popularization of smart phones. The proposed solution collects the received signal strength indication (RSSI) data of all detectable WiFi access points (APs) in an indoor environment using the built-in WiFi sensors in smart phones. The RSSI data is compared to that of a set of known reference locations namely fingerprints, which is measured beforehand and recorded in a database. In this way, the nearness of a user with respect to each fingerprint in terms of the Euclidean distance is determined. A field test that covered three rooms and a corridor was carried out. The results showed that the solution achieved an average coordinate-level accuracy of 2.55 m and a room-level accuracy of 100%. The tests were repeated one and half months later and the results revealed the time invariance of the fingerprints, and the reliability of the solution over time.

Abstract:We implemented a system able to locate people indoor, with the purpose of providing assistive services. Such approach is particularly important for the Art, for providing information on exhibitions, art galleries and museums, and to allow the access to the cultural heritage patrimony to people with disabilities. The system may provide also very important information and input to elderly people, helping them to perceive more deeply the reality and the beauty of art. The system is based on Beacons, very small and low power consumption devices, and Human Body Communication protocols. The Beacons, Bluetooth Low Energy devices, allow to obtain a position information related to predetermined reference points, and through proximity algorithms, locate a person or an object of interest. The position obtained has an error that depends from the interferences present in the area. The union of Beacons with Human Body Communication, a recent wireless technology that exploits the human body as a transmission channel, makes it possible to increase the accuracy of localization. The basic idea is to exploit the localization derived from Beacons to start a search for an electrical signal transmitted by the human body and to distinguish the position according to the information contained in the signal. The signal is transmitted by capacitance to the human body and revealed by a special resonant circuit (antenna) adapted to the microphone input of the mobile device.

Abstract:When dealing with multimedia data, source attribution is a key challenge from a forensic perspective. This task aims to determine how a given content was captured, providing valuable insights for various applications, including legal proceedings and integrity investigations. The source attribution problem has been addressed in different domains, from identifying the camera model used to capture specific photographs to detecting the synthetic speech generator or microphone model used to create or record given audio tracks. Recent advancements in this area rely heavily on machine learning and data-driven techniques, which often outperform traditional signal processing-based methods. However, a drawback of these systems is their need for large volumes of training data, which must reflect the latest technological trends to produce accurate and reliable predictions. This presents a significant challenge, as the rapid pace of technological progress makes it difficult to maintain datasets that are up-to-date with real-world conditions. For instance, in the task of smartphone model identification from audio recordings, the available datasets are often outdated or acquired inconsistently, making it difficult to develop solutions that are valid beyond a research environment. In this paper we present POLIPHONE, a dataset for smartphone model identification from audio recordings. It includes data from 20 recent smartphones recorded in a controlled environment to ensure reproducibility and scalability for future research. The released tracks contain audio data from various domains (i.e., speech, music, environmental sounds), making the corpus versatile and applicable to a wide range of use cases. We also present numerous experiments to benchmark the proposed dataset using a state-of-the-art classifier for smartphone model identification from audio recordings.

Abstract:The widespread diffusion of connected smart devices has contributed to the rapid expansion and evolution of the Internet at its edge. Personal mobile devices interact with other smart objects in their surroundings, adapting behavior based on rapidly changing user context. The ability of mobile devices to process this data locally is crucial for quick adaptation. This can be achieved through a single elaboration process integrated into user applications or a middleware platform for context processing. However, the lack of public datasets considering user context complexity in the mobile environment hinders research progress. We introduce MyDigitalFootprint, a large-scale dataset comprising smartphone sensor data, physical proximity information, and Online Social Networks interactions. This dataset supports multimodal context recognition and social relationship modeling. It spans two months of measurements from 31 volunteer users in their natural environment, allowing for unrestricted behavior. Existing public datasets focus on limited context data for specific applications, while ours offers comprehensive information on the user context in the mobile environment. To demonstrate the dataset's effectiveness, we present three context-aware applications utilizing various machine learning tasks: (i) a social link prediction algorithm based on physical proximity data, (ii) daily-life activity recognition using smartphone-embedded sensors data, and (iii) a pervasive context-aware recommender system. Our dataset, with its heterogeneity of information, serves as a valuable resource to validate new research in mobile and edge computing.

Abstract:This paper describes a data collection campaign and the resulting dataset derived from smartphone sensors characterizing the daily life activities of 3 volunteers in a period of two weeks. The dataset is released as a collection of CSV files containing more than 45K data samples, where each sample is composed by 1332 features related to a heterogeneous set of physical and virtual sensors, including motion sensors, running applications, devices in proximity, and weather conditions. Moreover, each data sample is associated with a ground truth label that describes the user activity and the situation in which she was involved during the sensing experiment (e.g., working, at restaurant, and doing sport activity). To avoid introducing any bias during the data collection, we performed the sensing experiment in-the-wild, that is, by using the volunteers' devices, and without defining any constraint related to the user's behavior. For this reason, the collected dataset represents a useful source of real data to both define and evaluate a broad set of novel context-aware solutions (both algorithms and protocols) that aim to adapt their behavior according to the changes in the user's situation in a mobile environment.

An Indoor Localization System by Fusing Smartphone Inertial Sensors and Bluetooth Low Energy Beacons

Abstract:Indoor localization becomes a research focus in recent years since. Smartphone-based pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR) is one of the widely-adopted localization techniques with limiting problems such as the drift of inertial sensors. Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) has better performance result which makes it an auxiliary tool for PDR to correct errors. But BLE fingerprint sampling and calibrating are time-consuming and labor-intensive. In this paper, a Support Vector Machine (SVM) classification algorithm based crowdsourcing method is developed and applied to generate BLE landmarks instead of manual work leveraging smartphone sensors and uploaded BLE signals. A particle filter is also used to fusion PDR and landmarks detection results for better localization performance. The experiments show that the proposed fusion algorithm achieved the accuracy of 3.15 m at 90% of the time with dense landmarks (1 landmark per 5 m), which performs 51.76% better than 6.53 m from PDR algorithm. With sparse landmarks (1 landmark per 15 m), the proposed fusion algorithm achieved the accuracy of 3.26 m at 90% of the time. The proposed tracking system using smartphone inertial sensors and BLE beacons can be a promising methodology in practical usages.

Abstract:Variations in Global Positioning Systems (GPSs) have been used for tracking users' locations. However, when location tracking is needed for an indoor space, such as a house or building, then an alternative means of precise position tracking may be required because GPS signals can be severely attenuated or completely blocked. In our approach to indoor positioning, we developed an indoor localization system that minimizes the amount of effort and cost needed by the end user to put the system to use. This indoor localization system detects the user's room-level location within a house or indoor space in which the system has been installed. We combine the use of Bluetooth Low Energy beacons and a smartwatch Bluetooth scanner to determine which room the user is located in. Our system has been developed specifically to create a low-complexity localization system using the Nearest Neighbor algorithm and a moving average filter to improve results. We evaluated our system across a household under two different operating conditions: first, using three rooms in the house, and then using five rooms. The system was able to achieve an overall accuracy of 85.9% when testing in three rooms and 92.106% across five rooms. Accuracy also varied by region, with most of the regions performing above 96% accuracy, and most false-positive incidents occurring within transitory areas between regions. By reducing the amount of processing used by our approach, the end-user is able to use other applications and services on the smartwatch concurrently.

Abstract:We report our experiences of developing, deploying, and evaluating MLoc, a smartphone-based indoor localization system for malls. MLoc uses Bluetooth Low Energy RSSI and geomagnetic field strength as fingerprints. We develop efficient approaches for large-scale, outsourced training data collection. We also design robust online algorithms for localizing and tracking users' positions in complex malls. Since 2018, MLoc has been deployed in 7 cities in China, and used by more than 1 million customers. We conduct extensive evaluations at 35 malls in 7 cities, covering 152K m 2 mall areas with a total walking distance of 215 km (1,100 km training data). MLoc yields a median location tracking error of 2.4m. We further characterize the behaviors of MLoc's customers (472K users visiting 12 malls), and demonstrate that MLoc is a promising marketing platform through a promotion event. The e-coupons delivered through MLoc yield an overall conversion rate of 22%. To facilitate future research on mobile sensing and indoor localization, we have released a large dataset (43 GB at the time when this paper was published) that contains IMU, BLE, GMF readings, and the localization ground truth collected by trained testers from 37 shopping malls.
Analysis of Geospatial Behaviour of Visitors of Urban Gardens: Is Positioning via Smartphones a Valid Solution?

Abstract:AbstractTracking locations is practical and speditive with smartphones, as they are omnipresent devices, relatively cheap, and have the necessary sensors for positioning and networking integrated in the same box. Nowadays recent models have GNSS antennas capable of receiving multiple constellations. In the proposed work we test the hypothesis that GNSS positions directly recorded by smartphones can be a valid solution for spatial analysis of people’s behaviour in an urban garden. Particular behaviours can be linked to therapeutic spots that promote health and well-being of visitors. Three parts are reported: (i) assessment of the accuracy of the positions relative to a reference track, (ii) implementation of a framework for automating transmission and processing of the location information, (iii) analysis of preferred spots via spatial analytics. Different devices were used to survey at different times and with different methods, i.e. in the pocket of the owner or on a rigid frame. Accuracy was estimated using distance of each located point to the reference track, and precision was estimated with static multiple measures. A chat-bot through the Telegram application was implemented to allow users to send their data to a centralized computing environment thus automating the spatial analysis. Results report a horizontal accuracy below ~2.3 m at 95% confidence level, without significant difference between surveys, and very little differences between devices. GNSS-only and assisted navigation with telephone cells also did not show significant difference. Autocorrelation of the residuals over time and space showed strong consistency of the residuals, thus proving a valid solution for spatial analysis of walking behaviour.

Abstract:Social distancing and contact/exposure tracing are accepted to be critical strategies in the fight against the COVID-19 epidemic. They are both closely connected to the ability to reliably establish the degree of proximity between people in real-world environments. We proposed, implemented, and evaluated a wearable proximity sensing system based on an oscillating magnetic field that overcomes many of the weaknesses of the current state of the art Bluetooth based proximity detection. In this paper, we first described the underlying physical principle, proposed a protocol for the identification and coordination of the transmitter (which is compatible with the current smartphone-based exposure tracing protocols). Subsequently, the system architecture and implementation were described, finally an elaborate characterization and evaluation of the performance (both in systematic lab experiments and in real-world settings) were performed. Our work demonstrated that the proposed system is much more reliable than the widely-used Bluetooth-based approach, particularly when it comes to distinguishing between distances above and below the 2.0 m threshold due to the magnetic field’s physical properties.

Abstract:Understanding how people interact and socialize is important in many contexts from disease control to urban planning. Datasets that capture this specific aspect of human life have increased in size and availability over the last few years. We have yet to understand, however, to what extent such electronic datasets may serve as a valid proxy for real life social interactions. For an observational dataset, gathered using mobile phones, we analyze the problem of identifying transient and non-important links, as well as how to highlight important social interactions. Applying the Bluetooth signal strength parameter to distinguish between observations, we demonstrate that weak links, compared to strong links, have a lower probability of being observed at later times, while such links-on average-also have lower link-weights and probability of sharing an online friendship. Further, the role of link-strength is investigated in relation to social network properties.
