Abstract:Introduction Teeth are biological structures with a high degree of hardness, density, calcification, and capacity to adapt to extrinsic factors at physical, biological, and physiological levels. Subsequently, they resist for a longer period in deteriorating environmental conditions. With dental analysis, it is possible to acquire biographical data about a person. The aim of this scoping review was to identify publications using human teeth tissues to estimate sexual dimorphism. Methods The scoping review was carried out in the following databases: Jstor, Scielo, Science Direct, PubMed, and Scopus, using ten search strategies in English and guaranteeing completeness and reproducibility of the phases stipulated in the PRISMA guide. Results 143 studies on sexual dimorphism based on dental tissue traits were included, of which 40.6% (n = 58) were done in Asia and 27.2% (n = 39) in America. 80% of the studies (equivalent to 114 articles) focused their observations and measurements on the dental crown; 4.2% in enamel, dentin, and pulp together; 3.5% in dental pulp; 2.1% in the entire tooth; 2.8% in enamel, root, and the enamel-cementum junction, and only 0.7% in dentin and pulp. In addition, 92.3% of the studies used metric methods, while only 4.9% and 2.8% used biochemical and non-metric method respectively. Conclusion For sexual dimorphism establishment, enamel has been the most analyzed dental tissue in permanent canines and molars mainly. Likewise, the most widely and accurately used methods for this purpose are the metrics, with the odontometry as the most implemented (intraoral or by using dental plaster models, digital scanning or software) with prediction percentages ranging from 51% to 95.9%. In contrast to biochemical methods, that can achieve the highest precision (up to 100%), the non-metric methods, to a less extent, reported prediction percentages of 58%.

Sexual dimorphism in tooth morphometrics: An evaluation of the parameters

Abstract:Aims and objectives: Sexual dimorphism refers to the variations in tooth size and shape between the sexes. The consistency of these variations is valuable in the identification of the sex of an individual in times of mass disaster when whole body parts get destroyed or are unavailable. There exist differences in the expression of these variables across races and regions. This study aims to tabulate and identify the variations in tooth measurements using standarized reference points in an attempt to establish parameters of sexual dimorphism. Materials and methods: 100 individuals (50 of each sex) in the age group 19-23 years were assessed for standard morphometric parameters of the maxillary central incisor, canine, premolar and molar. Odontometric measurements of established parameters were recorded from impression casts of the maxillary jaws. The mesiodistal width (MDW), the bucco-ligual width (BLW), the crown length (CL) and the cervical angle (CA) were charted among the teeth. The consistency of the variations was statistically analyzed and a logistic regression table was prepared to identify the sex of the individual from the tooth measurements. Results and conclusions: The BLW, MDW and CL reflected significant variations among all the teeth to be effective in establishing sexual dimorphism. CA as a parameter was inadequate across all the teeth. The permanent maxillary canine was the most important tooth to be reflective of the gender and statistically significant to be utilized for gender determination.
Prevalence and risk factors of overweight and obesity in elementary schoolchildren in the metropolitan region of Tunis, Tunisia.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Local data about prevalence of obesity in emerging countries are rather scarce. Risk factors for obesity, well known in most industrialized countries, are poorly understood in Tunisia. AIMS To assess prevalence of overweight and obesity and to investigate associations with possible risk factors in a group of 6-12 year- old schoolchildren in Tunis, Tunisia. METHODS A descriptive transversal study including a sample of 1335 schoolchildren (6-12 years; mean: 9.7 ± 1.5 years) was conducted in Tunis. Personal and parental data were collected by questionnaires completed by parents. Height and weight were measured and body mass index was calculated. Prevalence of overweight and obesity was defined based on international agreed cut-off points. RESULTS Prevalence of overweight and obesity was 19.7% and 5.7%, respectively. Risk factors associated with overweight were: high degree- educated mother and father: 17.3% vs 11.7% (p=.01) (OR (95%CI): 1.58; 1.09-2.29) and 26% vs 17.4% (p=.002) (OR: 1.66; 1.21-2.29), respectively; mother, father high in occupational hierarchy: 7.2% vs 3.6% (p=0.009) (OR: 2.1; 1.2-3.7) and 14% vs 9% (p=.014) (OR: 1.6; 1.1-2.48), respectively. Overweight children had a significantly higher consumption of bread (p=.044), of snack intake (p=0.046) and of soft drink consumption (p=.035). CONCLUSIONS Prevalence of overweight and obesity in this cohort are 19.7% and 5.7%, respectively. Substantial differences in food choices in families with the highest socio-economic status are among risk factors contributing to obesity development.
Sexual dimorphism in permanent mandibular and maxillary canines of Sri Lankan Sinhalese population

Abstract:Introduction: Sexual dimorphism is one of the most important implications in forensic investigations and anthropological studies. Teeth are becoming a good source of material for gender determination. The canine is the most preferred tooth for gender determination because the canine is the strongest tooth in the oral cavity. Objectives: To investigate sexual dimorphism in permanent mandibular and maxillary canines of a Sri Lankan Sinhalese population, and to ascertain the most suitable dimension (labiolingual, mesiodistal and crown height) to determine the sex of an individual. Materials & Methods : The study was conducted using 384 dental casts (Males 192, Females 192) aged between 18 and 25 years in a sample of the Sri Lankan population. According to a selection criterion, casts were selected using a convenient random sampling technique. Mesio-distal, Bucco-lingual and Crown height of all the canines in the casts were measured using a digital vernier caliper accurate to 0.01 mm. Results : Statistical analysis was performed using Minitab 17 and SPSS (Version 21). Unpaired sample t-test, paired sample t-test and point-biserial correlation were used for data analysis. The present study revealed that males show larger mean dimensions of canine teeth than females. Out of all four canines, mandibular canines show highly consistent results for sexual dimorphism. Further, crown height is the best measurement to evaluate sexual dimorphism. Conclusion : It can be concluded that out of all the four canines, mandibular canines show highly consistent results for sexual dimorphism. Moreover, crown height is the best measurement to evaluate sexual dimorphism, in identifying an unknown .
Gender determination using mandibular intercanine distance and mesiodistal width of right mandibular molar

Abstract:Background: Forensic odontology plays an important role in mass disasters, house fires, criminal deaths, identification of missing persons, and child abuse cases. Teeth are the most stable part of the human body and are resistant to thermal, mechanical, and chemical insults. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of mandibular intercanine distance and mesiodistal width of mandibular first molar in gender determination. Materials and methods: The study comprised 100 participants (50 males and 50 females) in the age group of 18-23 years. The mandibular impressions were made, and casts were prepared using dental stone. The intercanine distance and mesiodistal width of the right mandibular first molar were measured using digital vernier callipers. The data obtained was statistically analysed using SPSS software version 23. Results: The mean mandibular intercanine distance was found to be 27.2 ± 2.3 in males and 25.94 ± 1.76 in females (P = 0.03). There was no statistical difference in the mesiodistal width of the mandibular molar between males and females (P = 0.166). However, the mean mesiodistal width of males was higher when compared to females. Conclusion: Males have a greater intercanine width and mesiodistal dimension when compared to females. This result will be helpful in forensic medicine, anthropology, orthodontic treatments, and clinical dentistry.
Maxillary first premolar shape (and not size) as an indicator of sexual dimorphism: A 2D geomorphometric study

Abstract:Introduction The primary aim of the study is to evaluate the morphological form of the maxillary first premolar using 2D geomorphometry and evaluate the sexually dimorphic characteristics. Methods The present study was carried out on standardized photographs of right Maxillary first premolar from 120 dental casts (60 male and 60 females). Twenty landmarks (based on geometric and anatomic evidence) were marked on the tooth using TPSdig software and analysed using Morpho J applying procrustes analysis and discriminant function analysis. Results The results showed similar centroid sizes between gender (p = 0.541). Procrustes ANOVA for shape analysis showed a greater dimorphism between sexs (f value of 1.35; p value=0.0793). Discriminant function analysis based on the procrustes coordinates showed an overall accuracy of 74.2 % in classifying sex based on the landmark coordinates with correct classification of 48/60 (80.00%) females and 41/60 (68.33) males. Conclusion Shape of the tooth can be measured objectively using geometric morphometric methods which can be utilized to identify the sex of an individual. The enamel is derived from ectoderm and once formed does not change during the life. The tooth’s structure and shape are determined by the sex chromosomes, which is well represented as sexual dimorphism. The study evaluates the occlusal and contact area morphology of premolars. These are important parameters considered during restorative treatment, functional rehabilitation and forensic investigations.

Abstract:Objectives: Permanent canines have an important functional role during mastication due to their anatomy,cbesides its relevance in oral esthetics. However, dentistry undergraduates have great difficulty in differentiating them during dental anatomy classes. The objective of this work was to study the morphology of the extracted permanent maxillary canines (MC) and lower canine (LC) in order to describe the anatomical similarities and differences.Methods: One hundred maxillary canines and 100 lower canines were evaluated. Measurements were performed using a digital caliper, and also visual analysis. The data obtained in each evaluation were submitted to descriptive statistical analysis, and the chi-square test and Fisher's exact test with a significance level of 5% were applied.Results: It was observed that the MC root groove was present on the two proximal surfaces and the groove depth was greater on the mesial surface, as reported in the literature. The MC incisal ridge was normally worn, and imprecision in dental differentiation could occur during the anatomical study, while it is stated that the incisal ridge allows distinguishing this tooth by a simple visual examination. The marginal ridges of the MC had a moderate prominence, as observed in the literature. The MC cingulum often presented a moderate prominence, contradicting some studies which reported a large cingulum. The presence of the cervicoincisal ridge on the lingual surface was frequently observed with moderate, absent or little prominence, while some authors reported that this structure is quite evident. Furthermore, it is reported that MC usually presents aforamen cecum, which was not observed in our sample. LC often presented a worn incisal ridge. The cingulum, marginal ridges, lingual fossa and developmental grooves were less evident and, in some cases, the lingual surface presented a flat shape, which is not usually reported in the literature.Conclusions: The morphological differences and similarities of MC and LC are important for a detailed anatomical study to help dentistry undergraduates identify them correctly. Furthermore, the anatomical study is important for the restorative area for an appropriate aesthetics and function rehabilitation.
Morphology of the Cementoenamel Junction in Permanent Teeth of Dogs: A Scanning Electron Microscopic Study

Abstract:In human teeth, the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) can have different morphologies, known as Choquet cases or types: in type 1, the cementum overlaps the enamel; in type 2, the enamel overlaps the cementum; in type 3, the relationship between the cementum and enamel is edge-to-edge; and in type 4, there is a gap between the enamel and the cementum, with exposed dentin. Since little is known on the morphology of the CEJ in animals, the aim of this study was to characterize the structure of the CEJ of dog teeth by SEM. We studied 82 permanent teeth extracted from 4 dogs of similar size, aged from 7 months to 2 years. Teeth were grouped according to their size, sectioned and prepared for SEM. The teeth evaluated showed the 4 CEJ types. Type 3 was the most prevalent, being present, either alone or in combination, in 90.79% of the samples, followed by type 4 (present in 31.58% of the samples). Of the samples, 65.13% showed only one type, while 34.87% presented a combination of them. Types 3 and 4 were the only ones present alone (in 55.92% and 9.21% of the samples respectively), whereas the combinations between types 3 and 4 (20.40%) and types 1 and 3 (9.87%) were the most frequent. In all combinations, type 3 was predominant. The CEJ of the dogs evaluated showed a high degree of variability in the different types of teeth, within a same tooth, within the dentition of a single individual, and among individuals.

Abstract:Background: When conducting a forensic investigation, one of the most important steps is establishing the biological profile of a victim who cannot be positively recognized or is just a skeleton. It has been shown that, among the other clinical indicators, the diameters of dental crowns are a good and dependable source for determining gender in a particular population sample. However, the literature is sparse regarding their assessment as a viable marker for the determination of a particular race. In addition, the need for population-specific data has also been advocated while determining gender dimorphism based on tooth size. Aim and objectives: To study the bisexual variation in the permanent dentition of individuals from three different sets of populations: Arabian, South Asian, and East Asian. The other objective is to explore the role of this odontometric analysis in predicting the racial identity of the subjects belonging to the aforementioned population. Methodology: The research was conducted at the College of Dentistry, AlJouf University in Sakaka. Measurements of mesiodistal and buccolingual (BL) distances were taken using a digital vernier caliper on a total of 75 pairs of research models or casts. Statistical tests were run on the information gathered. Results: Of the 75 casts, 38 (50.7%) were of male and 37 (49.3%) were of female. Our analysis showed between genders, a significant difference in maxillary central incisor (P = 0.001), first premolar (P = 0.01), and first molar (P = 0.02) while for a mandibular arch, a significant difference was noted for incisors (P = 0.002) with greater tooth dimension in male than in the female. Concerning the BL dimensions, only the mandibular canine showed a significant difference between males and females (P = 0.001). Comparisons of the crown dimensions between population groups showed that the Arabian population consistently exhibits larger tooth dimensions than the other two populations in both arches. Conclusion: A few crown dimensions can be used as an adjunctive tool for the identification of the gender and race of an individual.
The uniqueness of the human anterior dentition: a geometric morphometric analysis

Abstract:The analysis of bitemarks has a significant bearing on forensic odontology and has attracted an increasingly sophisticated array of techniques in its evaluation. Two postulates underlie all bitemark analyses: firstly, that the characteristics of the anterior teeth involved in the bite are unique, and secondly, that this uniqueness is accurately recorded in the material bitten. Here, we investigate the question of the uniqueness of the anterior dentition. To do this, we use geometric morphometric techniques based on landmark and semilandmark data. The incisor and canine occlusal surfaces of 50 randomly selected orthodontic casts of young individuals (17-20 years) of both sexes form the material for this study. We analyzed the sizes of these teeth by means of landmark and semilandmark analysis to calculate Procrustes distances between tooth outlines. In order to analyze shape variation among individuals, we carried out principal components analyses on the partial warp scores. These are derived from Partial Procrustes coordinates aligned by means of thin-plate spline decomposition based on the bending energy matrix. The results indicate that there is no sexual dimorphism in the shape of the upper or lower arches. Plots of centroid size and first relative warps show less superposition among individuals than in shape analysis. This means that, when the size and shape are considered together, the difference between arches increases. Procrustes superimposition between the two individuals located most closely (0.0444) and the two most separated (0.1567) along the first axis of relative warp analyses show that individuals are not only differentiated by the relative position of their teeth but also by their arch shape. In conclusion, it appears that the incisal surfaces of the anterior dentition are in fact unique.
Connecting crowns: Analyzing morphological covariation in the modern human postcanine dentition

Abstract:Morphological covariation within the modern human postcanine dentition remains an open field of study. Analysis of covariation patterns of the three-dimensional (3D) shape between different tooth types has been seldom conducted, but it is relevant for the advancement of human biology and evolution, as well as dental anthropology, phylogeny, and medicine. Here, we analysed 3D shape covariation of the postcanine dentition (excluding third molars), both within and between dental arches using geometric morphometrics (GM). Based on high-resolution (µCT) scans of 526 teeth from 136 individuals we found high pairwise correlation in tooth pairs within the dental arches (lower P3 and P4, r = 0.89; upper P3 and P4, r = 0.81; upper M1 and M2, r = 0.86). The correlation values between antagonists varied notably from the highest value detected between upper and lower M1s (r = 0.9), to the lowest between upper P4s and lower M1s (r = 0.58). Of all analysed tooth types, only the upper M1s showed moderate to high correlation in every pair analysis. Noticeably, unusually high covariation was detected between some of the tooth type pairs that do not articulate in a normal dentition (e.g., lower P3 and upper M2, r = 0.88). Furthermore, a relatively high covariation was found in the pairs of lower P4s and M1s (r = 0.79), and upper P4s and M1s (r = 0.77), which are the only tooth type pairs of the postcanine dentition belonging to different tooth classes (premolars and molars, respectively) and still serving similar masticatory functions. This study points to the fact that higher morphological integration seems to characterize teeth within the same dental arch rather than between antagonistic teeth. With this study, we provided an overview of pairwise correlations and strength of covariation between different tooth types. This information might inform future studies aimed at understanding developmental, phylogenetic, and functional aspects of the human postcanine dentition, including possible phenotype-genotype associations. However, with this study being the first one performed on a 3D sample of this size, we also report on obstacles and peculiarities that have been determined.

Shape variation and sex differences of the adult human mandible evaluated by geometric morphometrics

Abstract:In cases of osseous defects, knowledge of the anatomy, and its age and sex-related variations, is essential for reconstruction of normal morphology. Here, we aimed at creating a 3D atlas of the human mandible in an adult sample using dense landmarking and geometric morphometrics. We segmented 50 male and 50 female mandibular surfaces from CBCT images (age range: 18.9–73.7 years). Nine fixed landmarks and 510 sliding semilandmarks were digitized on the mandibular surface, and then slid by minimizing bending energy against the average shape. Principal component analysis extracted the main patterns of shape variation. Sexes were compared with permutation tests and allometry was assessed by regressing on the log of the centroid size. Almost 49 percent of shape variation was described by the first three principal components. Shape variation was related to width, height and length proportions, variation of the angle between ramus and corpus, height of the coronoid process and inclination of the symphysis. Significant sex differences were detected, both in size and shape. Males were larger than females, had a higher ramus, more pronounced gonial angle, larger inter-gonial width, and more distinct antegonial notch. Accuracy of sexing based on the first two principal components in form space was 91 percent. The degree of edentulism was weakly related to mandibular shape. Age effects were not significant. The resulting atlas provides a dense description of mandibular form that can be used clinically as a guide for planning surgical reconstruction.

Variation of 3D outer and inner crown morphology in modern human mandibular premolars

Abstract:ObjectivesThis study explores the outer and inner crown of lower third and fourth premolars (P3, P4) by analyzing the morphological variation among diverse modern human groups. Materials and MethodsWe studied three‐dimensional models of the outer enamel surface and the enamel–dentine junction (EDJ) from μCT datasets of 77 recent humans using both an assessment of seven nonmetric traits and a standard geometric morphometric (GM) analysis. For the latter, the dental crown was represented by four landmarks (dentine horns and fossae), 20 semilandmarks along the EDJ marginal ridge, and pseudolandmarks along the crown and cervical outlines. ResultsCertain discrete traits showed significantly different regional frequencies and sexual dimorphism. The GM analyses of both P3s and P4s showed extensive overlap in shape variation of the various populations (classification accuracy 15–69%). The first principal components explained about 40% of shape variance with a correlation between 0.59 and 0.87 of the features of P3s and P4s. Shape covariation between P3s and P4s expressed concordance of high and narrow or low and broad crowns. ConclusionsDue to marked intragroup and intergroup variation in GM analyses of lower premolars, discrete traits such as the number of lingual cusps and mesiolingual groove expression provide better geographic separation of modern human populations. The greater variability of the lingual region suggests a dominance of functional constraints over geographic provenience or sex. Additional information about functionally relevant aspects of the crown surface and odontogenetic data are needed to unravel the factors underlying dental morphology in modern humans.

Molar enamel-dentine junction shape of Pliobates cataloniae and other Iberian pliopithecoids

Abstract:The phylogenetic relationships of the small-bodied catarrhine Pliobates cataloniae (∼11.6 Ma, NE Iberian Peninsula) have been controversial since its original description. However, the recent report of additional dentognathic remains has supported its crouzeliid pliopithecoid status. Based on the available hypodigm, the molar enamel-dentine junction (EDJ) shape of P. cataloniae is compared with that of other pliopithecoids from the same basin as well as both extinct and extant hominoids to further evaluate its pliopithecoid affinities. We also quantitatively compare the EDJ shape among these taxa by means of landmark-based three-dimensional geometric morphometrics using principal component analysis (PCA), canonical variate analysis, and between-group PCA. Permutation tests are performed to test whether Pliobates variation exceeds that of extant hominoid genera. Results indicate that Pliobates is similar in molar EDJ shape to other pliopithecoids, particularly crouzeliids. The variation displayed by Pliobates upper molars is less marked at the EDJ level than at the outer enamel surface, probably owing to differential enamel wear and intraspecific differences in enamel thickness. Multivariate analyses of EDJ shape show that all pliopithecoids (including Pliobates) cluster together in the PCAs, canonical variate analyses, and between-group PCAs and occupy a different portion of the morphospaces from extinct and extant hominoids. Posterior and typicality probabilities strongly support the classification of Pliobates as a pliopithecoid, wheras permutation tests fail to reject the single-genus hypothesis for the P. cataloniae hypodigm. We conclude that P. cataloniae is a crouzeliid pliopithecoid, as recently supported by cladistic analyses of craniodental characters, and that previous cladistic results that supported a stem hominoid status are attributable to postcranial convergences with crown hominoids. Our results further highlight the potential of three-dimensional geometric morphometrics analyses of the EDJ shape for better informing fossil primate alpha-taxonomy by means of quantitatively testing hypotheses about tooth shape variation.
Sexual dimorphism in the three-dimensional detailed crown structure of maxillary first premolars

Abstract:Objectives: Maxillary first premolars have a unique shape because of their curvature features, positional relationship of the cusps, and most prominent points, making them different from other teeth. This study aimed to quantitatively analyze the detailed three-dimensional morphometric structure of maxillary first premolars and sexual dimorphism. Methods: The study participants were 60 elementary and junior high school students (30 boys and 30 girls) in Japan. The distance between landmarks was measured using the three-dimensional coordinates of plaster casts, and the data collected was statistically analyzed. Results: Sexual dimorphism was greater in the lingual cusp, showing greater variation in size than the buccal cusp. Boys exhibited significantly larger relative distances in the mesiodistal and buccolingual directions than girls; particularly, regarding mesiodistal diameter of the central groove, mesial slope of the buccal cusp, and distal slope of the lingual cusp. These results may be due to a slight difference in the timing of secondary enamel knots between boys and girls during the developmental stage, which was reflected in the sexual dimorphism of the completed teeth. Curvature features, cusp positions, and most prominent points were considered individual traits because they were not interrelated. Conclusions: Subtle differences during the developmental stage may lead to sexual dimorphism of the completed crown. Furthermore, the morphological characteristics of the maxillary first premolars may be related to their location in the dental arch.
Dental morphology in Homo habilis and its implications for the evolution of early Homo

Abstract:Abstract The phylogenetic position of Homo habilis is central to debates over the origin and early evolution of the genus Homo . A large portion of the species hypodigm consists of dental remains, but they have only been studied at the often worn enamel surface. We investigate the morphology of the H. habilis enamel-dentine junction (EDJ), which is preserved in cases of moderate tooth wear and known to carry a strong taxonomic signal. Geometric morphometrics is used to characterise dentine crown shape and size across the entire mandibular and maxillary tooth rows, compared with a broad comparative sample ( n = 712). We find that EDJ morphology in H. habilis is for the most part remarkably primitive, supporting the hypothesis that the H. habilis hypodigm has more in common with Australopithecus than later Homo . Additionally, the chronologically younger specimen OH 16 displays a suite of derived features; its inclusion in H. habilis leads to excessive levels of variation.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the root and canal morphology in permanent mandibular incisors teeth using cone-beam computer tomography imaging in a Spanish subpopulation, and compared these findings with ipsilateral (similarity) and contralateral (symmetry) incisors. In addition, the position of canal splitting was measured.METHODS: A total of 229 datasets comprising four mandibular teeth each (n=916 incisors) were analysed using Vertucci and Ahmed et al. classifications, and, the similarity and symmetry were calculated. The distance from the cemento-enamel junction (CEJ), and the most coronal canal divergence was measured (if present). The role of sex was also assessed. The Cochran Q Test, LOGIS PROC in SUDAAN, Chi-square, and Kappa were used for the different comparisons. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered significant.RESULTS: All incisors were single-rooted and no significant differences regarding root canal morphology were found according to the sex of the subjects included in the database. The most common morphology was Vertucci type I/Ahmed et al. 1MI1(65.3% for central and 66.8% for lateral incisors respectively), followed by type III/1MI1-2-1 (31% for central and 30.6% for lateral incisors). 1.8% of the samples were considered as non-classifiable with Vertucci but were classified with codes using the Ahmed et al. system. Similarity values were 74.7% for the left side, and 74.2% for the right side, whereas symmetry values were 90% for central and 84.3% for lateral incisors. In the presence of divergences, the main (SD) distances from the CEJ were for type II/1MI1-2-1 3.8+-0.8 (centrals) 4.0+-0.7 mm (laterals); for type V/1MI1-2 this value ranged between 6.0+-1.8 and 5.5+-1.5 mm, whereas values for 1MI1-2-3-2-1 were 1.8 and 2.1 mm. No significant differences were found when the position of the most coronal divergence was compared between lateral and central incisors for the different morphologies.CONCLUSION: A high prevalence of Vertucci I/Ahmed et al. 1MI1 configuration was present in mandibular incisors from Spanish individuals. Similarity and symmetry were common, particularly for central incisors. The position of the coronal splitting of the canals varied according to the root canal morphology.
Geometric morphometric analysis of an ontogenetic cranial series of the Permian dicynodont Diictodon feliceps

Abstract:The Karoo Basin of South Africa is renowned for its abundance and diversity of therapsid fossils. Among the most ubiquitous and persistent of the Permian fauna is the small herbivorous dicynodont Diictodon feliceps. Intraspecific variation in Diictodon is historically confounding, and while ontogeny is frequently cited as a potential source of variation, observable developmental changes have never been calibrated. The present study revisits this issue, comparing three-dimensional landmark configurations of 82 Diictodon crania to investigate the association between shape, size and dimorphism. Beyond the statistically significant relationship between shape and allometry, our results determine the shape differences between juvenile and adult skulls of Diictodon, aligned with common craniofacial features documented in other tetrapod taxa. Functionally, these changes are attributed to development of the jaw musculature for feeding on larger, tougher plant matter during later ontogeny. Cranial morphological variation owing to sexual dimorphism is negligible, but distinct differences are noted in the allometric trajectories of each morphotype. A component of non-allometric variation cannot be accounted for, and we propose that this represents natural variation, rather than an artefact of taphonomic deformation.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to examine the global prevalence of root and root canal morphologies in mandibular canines and analyze potential influences of region, ethnicity, sex, and age on the proportion of a second root and root canal configuration.METHODS: Observers from 44 countries screened 13,200 canines using cone-beam computed tomographic exams and gathered data on the percentages of 2 root canal morphologies and 2-rooted configurations (primary outcomes), as well as the root canal configurations (secondary outcome). Demographic factors (ethnicity, sex, and age) were collected for each participant. Primary outcomes were represented as odds ratios and untransformed proportions accompanied by 95% confidence interval (CI) forest plots. Meta-analysis compared subgroups and identified sources of heterogeneity. Intra- and inter-rater tests were conducted. Statistical significance was set at 5%.RESULTS: The worldwide prevalence of a second canal was 7.5% (95% CI, 6.3%-8.7%), ranging from 0.7% in Nigeria to 17.7% in Uruguay. The meta-analysis also revealed significant variations when comparing ethnicity, gender, and age (P < .05). The global prevalence of a second root was 1.9% (95% CI, 1.5%-2.3%), with the highest proportion observed in Spain (6.7%). Caucasian and Indian (south Asian) ethnic groups, females, and older patients exhibited higher proportions of 2 roots (P < .05). Meta-regression excluded side, voxel size, and field of view as sources of heterogeneity (P > .05).CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of 2 root canals and 2-rooted configurations in the mandibular canine exhibited variations based on geographic location, ethnicity, sex, and age. The global prevalence of 2 root canals and 2-root configuration was 7.5% and 1.9%, respectively.

Abstract:Dental size variation in modern humans has been assessed from regional to worldwide scales, especially under microevolutionary and forensic contexts. Despite this, populations of mixed continental ancestry such as contemporary Latin Americans remain unexplored. In the present study we investigated a large Latin American sample from Colombia (N = 804) and obtained buccolingual and mesiodistal diameters and three indices for maxillary and mandibular teeth (except third molars). We evaluated the correlation between 28 dental measurements (and three indices) with age, sex and genomic ancestry (estimated using genome-wide SNP data). In addition, we explored correlation patterns between dental measurements and the biological affinities, based on these measurements, between two Latin American samples (Colombians and Mexicans) and three putative parental populations: Central and South Native Americans, western Europeans and western Africans through PCA and DFA. Our results indicate that Latin Americans have high dental size diversity, overlapping the variation exhibited by the parental populations. Several dental dimensions and indices have significant correlations with sex and age. Western Europeans presented closer biological affinities with Colombians, and the European genomic ancestry exhibited the highest correlations with tooth size. Correlations between tooth measurements reveal distinct dental modules, as well as a higher integration of postcanine dentition. The effects on dental size of age, sex and genomic ancestry is of relevance for forensic, biohistorical and microevolutionary studies in Latin Americans.
