Abstract:Recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) has received huge amounts of attention in the past two decades. However, there are still many critical problems about fundamental behaviours of RAC, which need to be figured out and which otherwise limit its further sustainable popularisation. Therefore, this series of two overviews rethinks fundamental behaviours of RAC based on the latest literature. In this overview (part I), the strength development and its mechanism, as well as failure patterns of RAC under static and dynamic loading, are explored. Then, the influencing factors and prediction models of elastic modulus, shrinkage and creep of RAC are intensively discussed. It is found that, compared with natural aggregate concrete, the 28 day compressive strength of RAC is lower, whereas the long-term compressive strength of RAC may be higher, which partly depends on the strength of the parent concrete. Furthermore, because the elastic modulus of RAC is often decreased, the drying shrinkage and creep of RAC are always increased. However, the autogenous shrinkage of RAC can be decreased, and also generally develops for above 60 days. Finally, some models have been summarised to better predict the elastic modulus and long-term deformation of RAC.
Effect of quality of recycled aggregates on bond strength between concrete and embedded steel reinforcement

Abstract:The use of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) in structural applications considerably increased. The main objective of this paper is to assess the effect of parent concrete (PC) quality on RCA properties including concrete durability and bond to steel reinforcement. Four RCA types are considered; three were sourced from 13, 42, and 62-MPa compressive strength (f'c) normal-density PC, while the fourth type was derived from lightweight PC. Test results showed that the PC quality has direct influence on the transfer of stresses and ultimate bond strengths to embedded rebars. The incorporation of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) latexes was found efficient to mitigate the drop in concrete mechanical properties including f'c, splitting tensile strength, electrical resistivity, and ultimate bond strength to embedded steel. The experimental data are compared to the design bond strengths specified in international codes such as ACI 318-17, European Code EC-2, and fib Model Code MC2010.

Abstract:Properties of recycled concrete (RC) using recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) constructed under different construction conditions were investigated. Four different concrete mixes containing 0%(Normal concrete, NC), 25%, 50% and 100% RCA(Recycled concrete, RC) with silica fume, fly, slag, and superplasticizer were cast. Slump and gas content of fresh NC and RC were monitored during casting period. Compressive strength, oxygen permeability and ultrasonic velocity were tested after the hardening of specimens. The results show that properties of both NC and RC are influenced largely by the percentage replacement of recycled coarse aggregate and also the construction conditions.

Abstract:This review examines the impact of recycled aggregates (RAs) on the fresh and mechanical properties of high-strength concrete (HSC). The results revealed that incorporating RAs can reduce the compressive strength of HSC by up to 25%, with strength values ranging from 40 to 70 MPa depending on the RA content. The addition of supplementary materials like silica fume, fly ash, and polycarboxylate ether significantly mitigated these negative effects, enhancing the compressive strength by approximately 15–20% compared with the control mixes without additives. Furthermore, the tensile strength was observed to decrease by up to 18% with increasing RA content, but fiber reinforcement improved this by 10%, demonstrating the potential of additives to offset mechanical weaknesses. The modulus of elasticity also declined by up to 30% with higher RA dosages, highlighting the critical impact of the adhered mortar quality on the overall stiffness of the concrete. According to the literature, it was noticed that, when the dosage of RCAs is increased, there is a drop in the strength activity index (SAI). When the substitute dosage exceeded 50%, the SAI decreased. These findings underscore the importance of using optimized additive combinations to improve the mechanical performance of RA concrete, making it a viable option for sustainable construction. Overall, the findings suggest that, although RAs may negatively affect certain physical traits of HSC, the use of appropriate additives can optimize its performance, making it a viable option for sustainable construction practices.

Abstract:Replacing natural aggregate (NA) with recycled aggregate (RA) has contributed to the trend of sustainable development in civil construction. With this background, improvements in the mechanical properties of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) and the scientific design of the mixture ratio are attracting more concern in recent years. This paper is a review of the recent research, including the following aspects: the mixture design of RAC; the improved mechanical properties of recycled concrete with steel fibers; and the performance of the main components. In addition, the primary composition materials, properties, and calculation methods of the mixture ratio of RAC are summarized. The mechanical properties, durability and microscopic analysis of RAC are also discussed. The accurate calculation of mixture proportion can significantly facilitate the work of preparing a test mix of RAC. Through the mixture-ratio optimization and physical and chemical strengthening of RA, the mechanical properties of RAC can be improved to promote the wider application of this eco-friendly material.

Abstract:The main problem in using recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) as a construction material is due to the weak adhered mortar which usually has higher porosity and water absorption. It also has lower strength compared to natural aggregate (NA), and it often forms weak interfacial transition zones in the recycled aggregate concrete (RAC). These weak zones lead to negative effects on the mechanical properties and durability performance of RAC. In order to utilize RCA in more effectively as aggregate in concrete, it is necessary to improve the quality and enhance the properties of the attached weak mortar. This paper reviews different treatment methods of RCA based on the published research, and systematically analyses the strengths and weaknesses as well as the applicability and limitations of each method. The advantages and disadvantages of each treatment method, in terms of their technical feasibility, efficiency, economic and environmental impacts, are also discussed, in view of facilitating the selection of the most suitable treatment method for RCA. Although most techniques have been examined and trialed under laboratory conditions, further investigations are required to determine the most effective approach for treating RCA, with consideration not only given to the laboratory scale, but also on a commercial production scale.

Abstract:The use of recycled aggregates (RCAs) could further enhance the sustainability of reactive magnesia cement (RMC) formulations, but the performances of RMC-RCA are still unknown to researchers. Therefore, in this study, the strength development of CO2-cured RMC-RCA was explored for the first time, and the strength variation among groups was further interpreted by microstructural analyses. The initial results show that compared with samples with natural aggregates (NAs), a 28 d strength boost (i.e., 37 vs. 15 MPa) in RMC-RCA can be observed. The strength improved in RMC-RCA could be related to its refined microstructures, ITZs and larger carbonation depths, which resulted from the easiness of CO2 penetration within samples. Then the presence of porous ITZs in RCA contributes to better CO2 diffusion, as described in the proposed revised CO2 diffusion model. Overall, while enabling a pronounced CO2 capture potential of RMC concrete, this preliminary study could pave the path for the upcycling of RCAs in RMC concrete on a large scale.

Abstract:Concrete waste (CW) recycling stands as a promising strategy to promote sustainable construction practices. This research aims to assess the feasibility of using recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) as a surrogate for natural aggregates (NA) in concrete applications and reduce the environmental impact associated with the depletion of natural resources and landfill space. To achieve these objectives, CW was segregated from debris mixes of construction and demolition waste (CDW), collected, crushed, and graded to generate RCA. Thirty-two concrete samples were prepared and categorized into four distinct groups with 0% (reference), 50%, 75%, and 100% substitution levels for both coarse RCA (CRCA) and fine RCA (FRCA), all utilized simultaneously. Concurrently, the environmental impacts of producing 1 m 3 of concrete were evaluated using a life cycle assessment (LCA) approach, (cradle-to-gate) covering three phases, the raw material supply (A1), transportation (A2) and concrete production (A3). At the 50% replacement level, the mechanical properties of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) demonstrated a 20.0% increase in splitting tensile strength, accompanied by marginal decrease in workability (15.0%) and compressive strength (6.0%). In addition, at that percentage, the average environmental effects were reduced by 31.3%, with specific reductions of 34.7% for A1, 40.3% for A2, and no change in A3.

Abstract:In this study, the characteristics of recycled aggregate concrete according to the mixing ratio of recycled coarse aggregate(RCA) were analyzed for different design strengths to explore the use of recycled materials in the production of ready-mixed concrete. The results show that, depending on the ratio of recycled aggregate, the compressive strength is similar to that of normal concrete and does not deteriorate. Therefore, it is possible to achieve a target design strength. Furthermore, if the ratio of recycled coarse aggregate for concrete is up to 25% of the total aggregate amount (50% of the total coarse aggregate), slump does not cause problems. Our findings show that the higher the design standard strength, the greater the amount of powder, and the more stringent the management of slump reduction, unit quantity, and performance necessary. The obtained results show that recycled aggregate can be used to produce ready-mixed concrete after adjusting its mixing ratio and concrete mix proportions.

Abstract:Abstract The paper investigates the fresh and hardened mechanical properties of a concrete mix produced with partial or full substitution of natural aggregates with recycled aggregates from demolition works and crushed tested cubes concrete from laboratory. Recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) is the concrete that has been made from waste materials recycled as coarse and/or fine aggregate. One of the waste materials is the concrete that is taken from demolished buildings in Iraq due to military operations on 2014 and the other is crushed tested concrete cubes from laboratory. Choosing crushed concrete wastes from demolition works and crushed test cubes concrete from laboratory as source of recycling would result in reusing portion of the waste products of the concrete production industry. This study presents an experimental study on the performance of concrete that contains recycled coarse aggregate. The replacement percentages of natural coarse aggregate with the recycled coarse aggregate are (0, 33.3, 66.7 and 100) %. Moreover, silica fume was used as an admixture for all recycled aggregate concretes. Compressive and indirect tensile strength were studied for all of the reference and recycled aggregate concretes at (28) days age, by testing concrete cubes and cylinders specimens respectively. The results showed that the compressive strength and splitting tensile strength decreased for recycled waste concretes taken from demolished buildings and increased for recycled crushed tested cubes concretes from laboratory as compared to the reference concrete. When the silica fume was added, the compressive strength and tensile strength increased for all recycled aggregate concretes compared to those without the silica fume.

Abstract:This paper reports an evaluation of the properties of medium-quality concrete incorporating recycled coarse aggregate (RCA). Concrete specimens were prepared with various percentages of the RCA (25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%). The workability, mechanical properties, and durability in terms of abrasion of cured concrete were examined at different ages. The results reveal insignificant differences between the recycled concrete (RC) and reference concrete in terms of the mechanical and durability-related measurements. Meanwhile, the workability of the RC reduced vastly since the replacement of the RCA reached 75% and 100%. The ultrasound pulse velocity (UPV) results greatly depend on the porosity of concrete and the RC exhibited higher porosity than that of the reference concrete, particularly at the transition zone between the RCA and the new paste. Therefore, the sound transmission in the RC required longer times than that in the reference concrete. Moreover, a predictive equation relating the compressive strength to the UPV was developed.

Abstract:Recycling construction wastes for their utilisation as aggregates will overcome the dumping and scarcity problems. However, their higher porosity affects the properties of concrete. Hence, this study examines the potential use of microbial-induced calcium carbonate precipitation techniques to improve the quality of recycled coarse aggregates (RCA). The natural coarse aggregate (NCA) was replaced with 50, 100% of RCA and bio-deposited recycled coarse aggregate (BRCA). The aggregate properties were tested and observed that the water absorption and crushing index of RCA were increased by 85.10% and 19.10%, whereas for BRCA, the water absorption and crushing index were increased by only 5.20% and 5.80%. The concrete mixture prepared with optimised and complete percentages of RCA and BRCA was tested for their fresh, hardened, and durable properties. It is observed that the strength of the RAC was 36% lesser than NAC, whereas the strength of the BRAC was 33.40% more compared to the RAC at 28 days. Also, the water absorption and sorptivity of BRAC were reduced by 33.68% and 15.50% and the resistance to carbonation and chloride ingression of BRAC was enhanced by 15.50% and 29.73% when compared to RAC. The microstructural investigations performed through SEM and XRD evident the CaCO 3 precipitation that improves the quality of RCA.

Abstract:Recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) is expected to a sustainable solution to alter the virgin aggregate concrete (VAC) in structural use. While it is able to address environmental issues for both virgin aggregate (VA) consumption and waste generation, not so many studies quantify the environmental burdens through life cycle assessment (LCA). RAC is a composite material, which LCA should be analysed by considering its mixtures, and corresponding production technologies. This aggravates the complexity of LCA model since it involves great numbers of unit processes. Through reviewing 90 articles, this paper overviews the developments of LCA for RAC, and identifies the research trend shifts with the promotion of RAC technology. Although many relevant studies have become more comprehensive, there are still numerous inconsistencies and uncertainties existing in LCA processes that avoid LCA results from comparisons. From the review, it clearly points out that results are greatly affected by two aspects that are mix design and LCA mechanism. Cement production has the predominant contribution to the environmental impacts of concrete, and normally followed by transportation process. Accordingly, mix design, together with treatment technology of raw materials, influence the overall environmental performance of concrete. With respect to LCA phases, selections of FU, system boundary, allocation rule, LCI and LCIA methodology are highly subjective, causing more uncertainties that hinder the comparisons across the studies. It is therefore suggested that variations of mix design and inconsistencies from LCA mechanism could be explored further in the field of RAC to establish the holistic and multi-criteria study for comparison and decision making.

Abstract:In the last decade there has been a massive growth for development of concrete infrastructures all around the world. Take into account environmental concerns, concrete technology should direct efforts toward assuring development and fabrication of sustainable and resilient concrete. For this purpose, incorporation of recycled concrete aggregate in concrete products particularly self-compacting concrete (SCC) for structural and non-structural application would be significant achievement. In this study the fresh and hardened properties of SCC prepared by substituting natural aggregates (NA) with recycled coarse aggregates (RCA). In addition, bonding behaviour of reinforced RCA-SCC for structural application was investigated. Moreover, surface treatment of RCA using lithium silicate solution was proposed to investigate its feasibility to improve the fresh and hardened properties of SCC as well as its bonding strength. The mechanical properties including compressive strength, tensile strength and elastic modulus of SCC mixes using untreated RCA and treated RCA (TRCA) were investigated. The results showed an improvement in performance of SCC mixes made with TRCA in compare with the untreated samples. The bond behaviour between SCC made with RCA and steel reinforcement was studied and the relationship between the brittleness and bonding of SCC mixes using untreated RCA and TRCA determined. The effect of surface treatment on the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between adhered mortar and RCA studied using scanning electron microscope (SEM). It was determined that the treatment of RCA improved the bond at the ITZ through densification. The results gave experimental evidence of the suitability of RCA-SCC for structural use and application in reinforced concrete.

Abstract:Using recycled concrete aggregates from construction and demolition wastes on structural concrete is a sustainable solution to reduce the consumption of natural resources and the detrimental effects of concrete production on the environment. This paper has collected much data from the literature to study fresh, mechanical properties and durability of concrete made of treated/untreated recycled aggregate (RA). Furthermore, the flexural and shear behavior of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) beams was studied. This study discussed the distinctions and similarities between reinforced RAC beams and reinforced natural aggregate concrete (NAC) beams. The results of this review's analysis clearly show that reinforced RAC beams with different RAC ratios perform structurally on par with or slightly worse than reinforced NAC beams, demonstrating the viability of RAC for structural applications. Emphasis is placed on carefully choosing and adjusting material models for recycled aggregate concrete. Ultimately, guidelines for future inquiries in this field are delineated and deliberated upon. The review will be advantageous for academics and professionals who aim to acquire a comprehensive comprehension of the behavior of RAC beams. It addresses several practical concerns connected to the numerical modeling of these components, which have not been adequately covered in existing literature.

Abstract:The study explores the potential of recycling construction and demolition waste into recycled coarse aggregates (RCA) to decrease waste generation and carbon footprint, using a standard compacting effort to calculate compressive strength and particle packing density in a specific cylindrical volume. This study investigates the impact of RCA on concrete’s workability, compressive strength, flexural, split tensile, drying shrinkage, electrical resistivity, rapid chloride penetration, and microstructural characteristics using XRD, SEM, and EDAX. Test findings showed that increasing the replacement percentage beyond the optimum value (RCA 25) had detrimental effects on the strength and microstructure of the concrete. RCA 25 has a higher compressive, flexural, and split tensile strength in the order of 11.56%, 3.06%, and 5.17% respectively compared to reference concrete, as well as 5.23% increase in drying shrinkage, 8.79% higher electrical resistivity, and 4.68% higher resistance to chloride penetration than reference concrete.

Abstract:The drying shrinkage of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) varies considerably owing to the extensive sources of parent concrete from which recycled aggregates are obtained. This paper proposes a theoretical drying shrinkage model for RAC considering the properties of the parent concrete, including its service time and strength. To achieve this, shrinkage tests were conducted on 60 concrete specimens over 360 days. Five types of parent concrete with different service times (1 year, 20 years, and 42 years) and water-to-cement ratios (0.30, 0.45, and 0.60) were crushed to obtain recycled coarse aggregates (RCAs) that were used to prepare the RAC specimens. Three RCA replacement ratios (0%, 50%, and 100%) and three RAC water-to-cement ratios (0.30, 0.45, and 0.60) were assessed. The results indicated that the drying shrinkage of RAC was effectively reduced by an increase in the parent concrete strengths and vice versa. A theoretical RAC shrinkage model was developed considering the influence of the residual mortar content and parent concrete strength. A benchmarking analysis using 262 shrinkage samples demonstrated that the proposed model offers improved accuracy for estimating the long-term drying shrinkage of RAC over existing methods, particularly when the parent concrete and RAC have large strength variations.

Testing and Prediction of the Strength Development of Recycled-Aggregate Concrete with Large Particle Natural Aggregate

Abstract:In this paper, a new recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) was produced with composite coarse aggregate and fine recycled aggregate. The composite coarse aggregate was mixed into continuous gradation by large particle natural aggregate with small particle recycled aggregate. To explore the time-dependent developments of the compressive strength and splitting tensile strength of this new RAC, 320 groups of cubic specimens were tested at different curing ages from 3 days to 360 days to measure the compressive and splitting tensile strengths. The amount of large particle natural aggregate varied from zero to 70% in mass of the total coarse aggregate. The water/cement ratio was taken as 0.60, 0.49, 0.41 and 0.36 to represent four strength grades of the RAC at about C20, C30, C40 and C50. Based on the tested results, the curves of the compressive and tensile strengths of the RAC that changed with curing age are plotted, which clearly exhibit that the amount of large particle natural aggregate had a rational range in different strength grades of the RAC which had better aging strength. When the RAC was no larger than C30 with a water/cement ratio of 0.60 and 0.49, the amount of large particle natural aggregate should be no more than 30%; when the RAC was no less than C40 with a water/cement ratio of 0.41 and 0.36, the amount of large particle natural aggregate should be no less than 50%. Along with the general prediction of the strength development of all the tested RAC, the optimal predictive formulas are proposed for the strength development of RAC with a rational amount of natural aggregate. Meanwhile, the strength developments of RAC with a rational amount of natural aggregate are assessed by the time-dependent models proposed by the ACI Committee 209 and CEB-FIP MC 2010.

Abstract:The growing construction industry and global population have led to increased demand for concrete, resulting in increased waste production. Recycling construction and demolition (C&D) waste as recycled fine aggregates (RFA) in concrete could help reduce waste and conserve natural resources. This research delves into the meticulous examination of particle packing density within specific cylindrical volumes under standard compacting efforts, elucidating an order of compressive strength. The study comprehensively explores various concrete properties, including workability, compressive strength, flexural strength, split tensile strength, drying shrinkage, electrical resistivity, rapid chloride penetration, and microstructural characteristics (analyzed through XRD, SEM, and EDAX). RFA particles, ranging from 0.15 to 4.75 mm, were employed as partial replacements for fine aggregates, with replacement percentages varying from 0% to 100% in increments of 25%. The empirical findings underscore that the incorporation of RFA significantly enhances concrete properties. However, it was observed that surpassing the optimum replacement percentage of 25% (RFA 25) adversely impacts the concrete's strength and microstructure. Specifically, RFA 25 exhibited remarkable improvements, with a 14.75% increase in compressive strength, a 6.61% boost in flexural strength, and a 13.14% enhancement in split tensile strength compared to conventional concrete (RC). Furthermore, RFA 25 demonstrated a 4.16% increment in drying shrinkage, 17.65% higher electrical resistivity, and an 18.83% superior resistance to chloride penetration compared to RC. The analysis of XRD, SEM, and EDAX results elucidated that at lower replacement percentages, the pozzolanic reaction enhances strength by forming additional hydration products. Conversely, at higher replacement levels, strength diminishes.
