Abstract:Background: Tracheal intubation (TI) practice across pediatric emergency departments (EDs) has not been comprehensively reported. We aim to describe TI practice and outcomes in pediatric EDs in contrast to those in intensive are units (ICUs) and use the data to identify quality improvement targets. Methods: Consecutive TI encounters from pediatric EDs and ICUs in the National Emergency Airway Registry for Children (NEAR4KIDS) database from 2015 to 2018 were analyzed for patient, provider, and practice characteristics and outcomes: adverse TI-associated events (TIAEs), oxygen desaturation (SpO2 < 80%), and procedural success. A multivariable model identified factors associated with TIAEs in the ED. Results: A total of 756 TIs in 13 pediatric EDs and 12,512 TIs in 51 pediatric/cardiac ICUs were reported. Median (interquartile range [IQR]) patient age for ED TIs was higher (32 [7-108] months) than that for ICU TIs (15 [3-91] months; p < 0.001). Proportion of TIs for respiratory decompensation (52% of ED vs. 64% ICU), shock (26% vs. 14%), and neurologic deterioration (30% vs. 11%) also differed by location. Limited neck mobility was reported more often in the ED (16% vs. 6%). TIs in the ED were performed more often via video laryngoscopy (64% vs. 29%). Adverse TIAE rates (15.6% ED, 14% ICU; absolute difference = 1.6%, 95% confidence interval [CI] = -1.1 to 4.2; p = 0.23) and severe TIAE rates (5.4% ED, 5.8% ICU; absolute difference = -0.3%, 95% CI = -2.0 to 1.3; p = 0.68) were not different. Oxygen desaturation was less commonly reported in ED TIs (13.6%) than ICU TIs (17%, absolute difference = -3.4%, 95% CI = -5.9 to -0.8; p = 0.016). Among ED TIs, shock as an indication (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 2.15, 95% CI = 1.26 to 3.65) and limited mouth opening (aOR = 1.74, 95% CI = 1.04 to 2.93) were independently associated with TIAEs. Conclusions: While TI characteristics vary between pediatric EDs and ICUs, outcomes are similar. Shock and limited mouth opening were independently associated with adverse TI events in the ED.
Tracheal Intubation Practice and Safety Across International PICUs: A Report From National Emergency Airway Registry for Children*

Abstract:Objectives: It is unknown if variation in tracheal intubation practice and outcomes exist across PICUs in different geographical regions. We hypothesized there would be differences in the process of care and adverse outcomes for tracheal intubation across PICUs in six different geographical regions (New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, Germany, India, and North America). Design: Prospective multicenter pediatric tracheal intubation database (National Emergency Airway Registry for Children) Setting: Six non-North American (International) and 36 North American PICUs. Events: All PICU tracheal intubation encounters from July 2014 to June 2017 Measurements and Main Results: Adverse tracheal intubation–associated events and desaturation occurrence (oxygen saturation < 80%) were evaluated. A total of 1,134 and 9,376 TIs from International and North American PICUs were reported, respectively: primary tracheal intubation 9,060, endotracheal tube change 1,450. The proportion of tracheal intubations for endotracheal tube change was greater in International PICUs (37% vs 11%; p < 0.001). Median age for International tracheal intubations was younger compared with North America (0 yr [interquartile range, 0–2 yr] vs 1 yr (0–7 yr); p < 0.001). Among primary tracheal intubations, the most common indication was respiratory (International 67%, North American 63%; p = 0.049). Direct laryngoscopy was the most common device in both International (86%) and North American (74%) tracheal intubations. Occurrence of any adverse tracheal intubation–associated event was New Zealand 8%, Japan 17%, Singapore 9%, Germany 17%, and India 6%; International 11% versus North American 14%; p value equals to 0.003. Desaturation was reported less commonly in International PICUs: 13% versus North American 17%; p equals to 0.001. International PICUs used cuffed endotracheal tube less often (52% vs 95%; p < 0.001). Proportion of cuffed endotracheal tube use per PICU was inversely correlated with the rate of tube change (r = –0.67; p < 0.001). Conclusions: There were both similarities and differences in tracheal intubation practice and outcomes across international PICUs. Fewer adverse tracheal intubation–associated events were reported from International versus North American PICUs. International PICUs used cuffed endotracheal tube less often and had higher proportion of endotracheal tube change.

Abstract:Objectives: Children with trisomy 21 often have anatomic and physiologic features that may complicate tracheal intubation (TI). TI in critically ill children with trisomy 21 is not well described. We hypothesize that in children with trisomy 21, TI is associated with greater odds of adverse airway outcomes (AAOs), including TI-associated events (TIAEs), and peri-intubation hypoxemia (defined as > 20% decrease in pulse oximetry saturation [Sp o2 ]). Design: Retrospective database study using the National Emergency Airway Registry for Children (NEAR4KIDS). Setting: Registry data from 16 North American PICUs and cardiac ICUs (CICUs), from January 2014 to December 2020. Patients: A cohort of children under 18 years old who underwent TI in the PICU or CICU from in a NEAR4KIDS center. We identified patients with trisomy 21 and selected matched cohorts within the registry. Interventions: None. Measurements and main results: We included 8401 TIs in the registry dataset. Children with trisomy 21 accounted for 274 (3.3%) TIs. Among those with trisomy 21, 84% had congenital heart disease and 4% had atlantoaxial instability. Cervical spine protection was used in 6%. The diagnosis of trisomy 21 (vs. without) was associated with lower median weight 7.8 (interquartile range [IQR] 4.5-14.7) kg versus 10.6 (IQR 5.2-25) kg ( p < 0.001), and more higher percentage undergoing TI for oxygenation (46% vs. 32%, p < 0.001) and ventilation failure (41% vs. 35%, p = 0.04). Trisomy 21 patients had more difficult airway features (35% vs. 25%, p = 0.001), including upper airway obstruction (14% vs. 8%, p = 0.001). In addition, a greater percentage of trisomy 21 patients received atropine (34% vs. 26%, p = 0.004); and, lower percentage were intubated with video laryngoscopy (30% vs. 37%, p = 0.023). After 1:10 (trisomy 21:controls) propensity-score matching, we failed to identify an association difference in AAO rates (absolute risk difference -0.6% [95% CI -6.1 to 4.9], p = 0.822). Conclusions: Despite differences in airway risks and TI approaches, we have not identified an association between the diagnosis of trisomy 21 and higher AAOs.

Abstract:BackgroundThe impact of multiple tracheal intubation (TI) attempts on outcomes in critically ill children with acute respiratory failure is not known. The objective of our study is to determine the association between number of TI attempts and severe desaturation (SpO2 < 70 %) and adverse TI associated events (TIAEs).MethodsWe performed an analysis of a prospective multicenter TI database (National Emergency Airway Registry for Children: NEAR4KIDS). Primary exposure variable was number of TI attempts trichotomized as one, two, or ≥3 attempts. Estimates were adjusted for history of difficult airway, upper airway obstruction, and age. We included all children with initial TI performed with direct laryngoscopy for acute respiratory failure between 7/2010-3/2013. Our main outcome measures were desaturation (<80 % during TI attempt), severe desaturation (<70 %), adverse and severe TIAEs (e.g., cardiac arrest, hypotension requiring treatment).ResultsOf 3382 TIs, 2080(65 %) were for acute respiratory failure. First attempt success was achieved in 1256/2080(60 %), second attempt in 503/2080(24 %), and ≥3 attempts in 321/2080(15 %). Higher number of attempts was associated with younger age, history of difficult airway, signs of upper airway obstruction, and first provider training level. The proportion of TIs with desaturation increased with increasing number of attempts (1 attempt:16 %, 2 attempts:36 %, ≥3 attempts:56 %, p < 0.001; adjusted OR for 2 attempts: 2.9[95 % CI:2.3–3.7]; ≥3 attempts: 6.5[95 % CI: 5.0–8.5], adjusted for patient factors). Proportion of TIs with severe desaturation also increased with increasing number of attempts (1 attempt:12 %, 2 attempts:30 %, ≥3 attempts:44 %, p < 0.001); adjusted OR for 2 attempts: 3.1[95 % CI:2.4–4.0]; ≥3 attempts: 5.7[95 % CI: 4.3–7.5] ). TIAE rates increased from 10 to 29 to 38 % with increasing number of attempts (p < 0.001); adjusted OR for 2 attempts: 3.7[95 % CI:2.9–4.9] ; ≥3 attempts: 5.5[95 % CI: 4.1–7.4]. Severe TIAE rates went from 5 to 8 to 9 % (p = 0.008); adjusted OR for 2 attempts: 1.6 [95 % CI:1.1–2.4]; ≥3 attempts: 1.8[95 % CI:1.1–2.8].ConclusionsNumber of TI attempts was associated with desaturations and increased occurrence of TIAEs in critically ill children with acute respiratory failure. Thoughtful attention to initial provider as well as optimal setting/preparation is important to maximize the chance for first attempt success and to avoid desaturation.

Abstract:Interleukin-5 (IL-5) plays a key role in the proliferation and differentiation of eosinophils. To aid the solution of the crystallographic three-dimensional structure, we have expressed large quantities of recombinant human IL-5 (hIL-5) in a methionine auxotroph strain of Escherichia coli (DL41) grown on an enriched seleno-DL-methionine-containing medium. Cell densities of A650 = 10 have been achieved. The selenomethionyl-labelled hIL-5 (Se-hIL-5) has been purified and found to contain 3.6 selenium atoms/dimer, and 0.4 methionine residues/dimer. In a B-cell growth factor assay, the Se-hIL-5 is significantly more active than the non-labelled hIL-5. Electrospray mass spectrometry shows two major peaks, with relative molecular masses of 26,326 +/- 6 and 26,280 +/- 8 corresponding to the 4Se and 3Se/1S forms of hIL-5. Unlike the methionine-containing hIL-5, the N-terminal selenomethionine is neither oxidised nor carbamoylated and can only be resolved into two species in isoelectric focusing gel electrophoresis. Se-hIL-5 crystallises in the same space group and unit cell as hIL-5. Difference Fourier calculations identify two of the selenomethionines corresponding to Met107 in the dimer. However, the N-terminal is disordered in the crystal, and the N-terminal selenomethionines are not resolved in the difference Fourier.
Associations between family presence and neonatal intubation outcomes: a report from the National Emergency Airway Registry for Neonates: NEAR4NEOS

Abstract:Objective Describe the current practice of family presence during neonatal tracheal intubations (TIs) across neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) and examine the association with outcomes. Design Retrospective analysis of TIs performed in NICUs participating in the National Emergency Airway Registry for Neonates (NEAR4NEOS). Setting Thirteen academic NICUs. Patients Infants undergoing TI between October 2014 and December 2017. Main outcome measures Association of family presence with TI processes and outcomes including first attempt success (primary outcome), success within two attempts, adverse TI-associated events (TIAEs) and severe oxygen desaturation ≥20% from baseline. Results Of the 2570 TIs, 242 (9.4%) had family presence, which varied by site (median 3.6%, range 0%–33%; p<0.01). Family member was more often present for older infants and those with chronic respiratory failure. Fewer TIs were performed by residents when family was present (FP 10% vs no FP 18%, p=0.041). Among TIs with family presence versus without family presence, the first attempt success rate was 55% vs 49% (p=0.062), success within two attempts was 74% vs 66% (p=0.014), adverse TIAEs were 18% vs 20% (p=0.62) and severe oxygen desaturation was 49% vs 52%, (p=0.40). In multivariate analyses, there was no independent association between family presence and intubation success, adverse TIAEs or severe oxygen desaturation. Conclusion Family are present in less than 10% of TIs, with variation across NICUs. Even after controlling for important patient, provider and site factors, there were no significant associations between family presence and intubation success, adverse TIAEs or severe oxygen desaturation.

Abstract:Objective To determine the incidence, indicators and clinical impact of difficult tracheal intubations in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Design Retrospective review of prospectively collected data on intubations performed in the NICU from the National Emergency Airway Registry for Neonates. Setting Ten academic NICUs. Patients Neonates intubated in the NICU at each of the sites between October 2014 and March 2017. Main outcome measures Difficult intubation was defined as one requiring three or more attempts by a non-resident provider. Patient (age, weight and bedside predictors of difficult intubation), practice (intubation method and medications used), provider (training level and profession) and outcome data (intubation attempts, adverse events and oxygen desaturations) were collected for each intubation. Results Out of 2009 tracheal intubations, 276 (14%) met the definition of difficult intubation. Difficult intubations were more common in neonates <32 weeks, <1500 g. The difficult intubation group had a 4.9 odds ratio (OR) for experiencing an adverse event and a 4.2 OR for severe oxygen desaturation. Bedside screening tests of difficult intubation lacked sensitivity (receiver operator curve 0.47–0.53). Conclusions Difficult intubations are common in the NICU and are associated with adverse event and severe oxygen desaturation. Difficult intubations occur more commonly in small preterm infants. The occurrence of a difficult intubation in other neonates is hard to predict due to the lack of sensitivity of bedside screening tests.

Abstract:Background: Successful execution of invasive procedures in acute care settings, including tracheal intubation, requires careful coordination of an interprofessional team. The stress inherent to the intensive care unit (ICU) environment may threaten the optimal communication and planning necessary for the safe execution of this complex procedure. The objective of this study is to characterize the perceptions of interprofessional team members surrounding tracheal intubations in the pediatric ICU (PICU). Methods: This is a single-center survey-based study of staff involved in the intubation of pediatric patients admitted to a tertiary level academic PICU. Physicians, nurses, and respiratory therapists (RT) involved in tracheal intubations were queried via standardized, discipline-specific electronic surveys regarding their involvement in procedural planning and overall awareness of and comfort with the intubation plan. Qualitative variables were assessed by both Likert scales and free-text comments that were grouped and analyzed thematically. Results: One hundred and eleven intubation encounters were included during the study time period, of which 93 (84%) had survey responses from at least 2 professional teams. Among those included in the analysis, the survey was completed 244 times by members of the PICU teams including 86 responses from physicians, 76 from nurses, and 82 from RTs. Survey response rates were >80% from each provider team. There were significant differences in interprofessional team comfort with nurses feeling less well informed and comfortable with the intubation plan and process compared to physicians and RTs (p < 0.001 for both). Qualitative themes including clear communication, adequate planning and preparation prior to procedure initiation, and clear definition of roles emerged among both affirmative and constructive comments. Conclusions: Exploration of provider perceptions and emergence of constructive themes expose opportunities for teamwork improvement strategies involving intubations in the PICU. The use of a preintubation checklist may improve organization and communication amongst team members, increase provider morale, decrease team stress levels, and, ultimately, may improve patient outcomes during this high stakes, coordinated event.

Abstract:Nasotracheal intubation (NTI) plays an important role in pediatric airway management, offering advantages in specific situations, such as oral and maxillofacial surgery and situations requiring stable tube positioning. However, compared to adults, NTI in children presents unique challenges owing to anatomical differences and limited space. This limited space, in combination with a large tongue and short mandible, along with large tonsils and adenoids, can complicate intubation. Owing to the short tracheal length in pediatric patients, it is crucial to place the tube at the correct depth to prevent it from being displaced due to neck movements, and causing injury to the glottis. The equipment used for NTI includes different tube types, direct laryngoscopy vs. video laryngoscopy, and fiberoptic bronchoscopy. Considering pediatric anatomy, the advantages of video laryngoscopy have been questioned. Studies comparing different techniques have provided insights into their efficacy. Determining the appropriate size and depth of nasotracheal tubes for pediatric patients remains a challenge. Various formulas based on age, weight, and height have been explored, including the recommendation of depth-mark-based NTI. This review provides a comprehensive overview of NTI in pediatric patients, including the relevant anatomy, equipment, clinical judgment, and possible complications.

Abstract:Objective This study aimed to examine the association between team stress level and adverse tracheal intubation (TI)-associated events during neonatal intubations. Study Design TIs from 10 academic neonatal intensive care units were analyzed. Team stress level was rated immediately after TI using a 7-point Likert scale (1 = high stress). Associations among team stress, adverse TI-associated events, and TI characteristics were evaluated. Result In this study, 208 of 2,009 TIs (10%) had high stress levels (score < 4). Oxygenation failure, hemodynamic instability, and family presence were associated with high stress level. Video laryngoscopy and premedication were associated with lower stress levels. High stress level TIs were associated with adverse TI-associated event rates (31 vs. 16%, p < 0.001), which remained significant after adjusting for potential confounders including patient, provider, and practice factors associated with high stress (odds ratio: 1.90, 96% confidence interval: 1.36–2.67, p < 0.001). Conclusion High team stress levels during TI were more frequently reported among TIs with adverse events.

Neonatal and young infants' specific developmental airway anatomy and respiratory physiology features, such as high airflow resistance, high airway collapsibility, high oxygen consumption with increased metabolism, and low reserve, contribute to a higher risk for respiratory failure (1,2). Anesthesia and tracheal intubation (TI), added to their higher vulnerability to airway obstruction and lower apnea tolerance, may lead to oxygen desaturation and critical outcomes (1,2). Every neonatal intubation should be considered a critical event (2). In pediatric and neonatal intensive care units (PICU and NICU, respectively) as well as pediatric emergency departments, clinical instability may add to the factors mentioned above, turning TI of critically ill patients into a high-risk procedure that can be associated with several adverse events (3,4). TI-associated events (TIAEs) are common in those settings, with TIAE rates estimated at around 18% in PICUs, 20% in NICUs, and 15% in pediatric emergency departments (3-5). In addition to clinical factors, previous studies demonstrated that increased TI attempts led to higher rates of TIAEs and severe desaturation (5-8). TI first attempt failure has been associated with a higher risk of severe adverse TIAEs such as cardiopulmonary arrest in critically ill patients with respiratory compromise (9). Ongoing efforts aim to improve the success rate of initial pediatric TI while minimizing TIAEs. These initiatives encompass the adoption of video laryngoscopy (VL) and the integration of apneic oxygenation (AO) methodologies. VL enables indirect visualization of laryngeal structures through high-resolution cameras and video systems. It has been increasingly used in PICU and NICU and pediatric emergency departments with promising results. In a prospective observational cohort study conducted in an academic pediatric tertiary emergency department, Couto et al. found that, when compared to DL, VL was associated with a higher success rate of first-attempt TI and a lower rate of TIAEs. This same study showed an 80% improvement in success rate compared to previously published historical series (10). According to a retrospective review of prospective collected observational data from the NEAR4KIDS (National Emergency Airway Registry for Children) database, VL use was independently associated with a lower occurrence of TIAEs among PICUs and cardiac ICU patients (11). In neonatal settings, VL has also been proven to be clinically significant and has been associated with fewer TIAES when compared to DL use (6,12,13). In an extensive retrospective review of prospective collected observational data from the National Emergency Airway Registry for Neonates (NEAR4NEOS), Moussa et al. found that, although VL use was not independently associated with higher TI first attempt success, it was associated with lower TIAEs (13). A systematic review that included three randomized trials that compared VL with DL for neonatal TI by trainees showed that VL increased IT first attempt success rate (moderate evidence) (12). VL has also gained a potential role in less invasive surfactant administration for neonates with respiratory distress syndrome. While enabling indirect visualization of the upper airway, VL can help guide adequate catheter placement for further surfactant administration (14). Furthermore, VL has become an important teaching tool in TI training. Previous studies have shown superior success rates of TI in simulated patients after training with VL compared to DL among trainees (15,16). Abstract:The path-integral method is used for determination of the quantum corrections to the free energy of nonlinear systems. All quantum effects of the harmonic part of the potential are considered and a variational principle is used to account for the quantum corrections due to the anharmonic part. Correct renormalized frequencies are obtained at any temperature and an effective potential to be inserted in the configurational integral is found. A new general expression for the partition function at any temperature in the low-coupling limit is obtained.

Abstract:Objective To determine the factors associated with second attempt success and the risk of adverse events following a failed first attempt at neonatal tracheal intubation. Design Retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data on intubations performed in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and delivery room from the National Emergency Airway Registry for Neonates (NEAR4NEOS). Setting Eighteen academic NICUs in NEAR4NEOS. Patients Neonates requiring two or more attempts at intubation between October 2014 and December 2021. Main outcome measures The primary outcome was successful intubation on the second attempt, with severe tracheal intubation-associated events (TIAEs) or severe desaturation (≥20% decline in oxygen saturation) being secondary outcomes. Multivariate regression examined the associations between these outcomes and patient characteristics and changes in intubation practice. Results 5805 of 13 126 (44%) encounters required two or more intubation attempts, with 3156 (54%) successful on the second attempt. Second attempt success was more likely with changes in any of the following: intubator (OR 1.80, 95% CI 1.56 to 2.07), stylet use (OR 1.65, 95% CI 1.36 to 2.01) or endotracheal tube (ETT) size (OR 2.11, 95% CI 1.74 to 2.56). Changes in stylet use were associated with a reduced chance of severe desaturation (OR 0.74, 95% CI 0.61 to 0.90), but changes in intubator, laryngoscope type or ETT size were not; no changes in intubator or equipment were associated with severe TIAEs. Conclusions Successful neonatal intubation on a second attempt was more likely with a change in intubator, stylet use or ETT size.

Abstract:Background: Performing tracheal intubation during pediatric cardiopulmonary resuscitation has been consistently associated with worsened clinical outcomes in observational studies. One theoretical explanation for these differences is that pauses in chest compressions during attempt(s) at TI result in a decreased chest compression fraction (CCF). Objective: To examine the impact of TI attempts on CCF in children during CPR in a network of tertiary pediatric EDs. Methods: Prospective observation study from the Videography In Pediatric Resuscitation (VIPER) Collaborative. All patients receiving CPR under videorecorded conditions were eligible for enrollment. Using video review, data was collected on CPR duration, TI attempts, and the occurrence and duration of CPR interruptions during TI attempts. CCF was calculated as the total duration of CPR (100%) minus the total time of all CPR interruptions (including pauses for TI). Using nonparametric methods, univariate comparison was made between CPR events with TI-associated CPR interruptions versus CPR events without TI associated interruptions (i.e. CPR event with CPR uninterrupted during TI attempts or with no TI attempts made). Results: 111 CPR events across four sites were analyzed. The median CCF across all events was 92% (IQR 87 - 94%). At least one TI attempt was made in 40/111 (36%) of CPR events; 29/40 (75%) of these CPR events had at least 1 CPR interruption associated with TI attempt(s). There was no significant difference in CCF between CPR events with at least one TI attempt and CPR events without any TI-associated pauses (89% vs. 92%, p=0.06). Conclusions: Pediatric cardiac arrests with TI attempts made during CPR did not have significantly shorter CCF than arrests without TI attempts. Our findings refute the hypothesis that worsened clinical outcomes in children who undergo TI during CPR are due to poorer CCF, and further research should try to examine other explanations for the association between TI during CPR and poor outcomes.

Effect of Endotracheal Intubation Performed by Trauma Surgeons on Patientswith Severe Traumatic Brain Injury: A Prospective Observational Cohort Study

Abstract:Background: The patients with severe trauma traumatic brain injury (STBI) should be intubated as early as possible, and most of the intubation was performed by anesthesiologists. With the construction of trauma centers in China, more and more trauma surgeons have mastered endotracheal intubation skills after standardized training, more and more trauma patients were intubated by trauma surgeons. We undertook a prospective observational cohort study of endotracheal intubation in emergency resuscitation room to study the effect of endotracheal intubation respectively performed by trauma surgeons and anesthesiologists on patients with STBI. Methods: We collected data of all intubated patients with STBI between January 2018 and March 2020. Patients were divided into trauma surgeons, intubation (TI) group and anesthesiologists, intubation (AI) group according to intubation performer. We recorded age, gender, GCS, ISS, admission RR, admission HR, admission SpO2, admission PO2, admission PCO2, admission SBP, mechanism of injury, type of intracranial lesion, endotracheal intubation time, 1-min success rate of intubation, intubation related complications, the time from arrival at hospital to intubation, incidence of aspiration pneumonia, mechanical ventilation time, 30-day mortality. Comparison was made between the two groups. Results: Among 356 STBI patients, 219 patients met the inclusion criteria (TI group N=142, AI group N=77). There were no significant statistical differences between the groups in age, gender, GCS, ISS, admission RR, admission HR, admission SpO2, admission PO2, admission PCO2, admission SBP, mechanism of injury, type of intracranial lesion. There were also no significant statistical differences between the groups in endotracheal intubation time, 1-min success rate of intubation and intubation related complications. The time from arrival at hospital to intubation in the TI group significantly lower than the AI group (p<0.01). Compared with the AI group, the incidence of aspiration pneumonia and the mechanical ventilation time were decrease (p<0.05). 30-day mortality had no significant statistical difference between the groups. Conclusion: The trauma surgeons can master endotracheal intubation skills through standardized training, and the intubation effect is not significantly different from that of anesthesiologists. Moreover, endotracheal intubation by trauma surgeons allow the patients with STBI to be intubated earlier and reduce the incidence of aspiration pneumonia and the mechanical ventilation time. So early intubation is beneficial for the patients with STBI, and trauma surgeons should be encouraged to master endotracheal intubation skills.
