Abstract:Constructing single-atom catalysts (SACs) using organic porous framework materials as supports presents a promising approach for developing highly efficient photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution. However, the fabrication of SACs that are both highly stable and active poses a significant challenge, particularly in the precise anchoring of metal single atoms. In this study, we utilized 1,3,6,8-tetra (p-methyl benzoate) pyrene as a ligand to synthesize pyrene-based hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (denoted as PFC-1) through a self-assembly approach. Subsequently, a liquid-phase photoreduction process was employed to deposit noble metal platinum (Pt) onto PFC-1, resulting in the fabrication of SACs (PFC-1@Pt). Characterization results confirmed that Pt existed in a monatomic state, anchored through PtC and PtO coordination bonds with PFC-1. Serving as electron capture and separation centers, the Pt single atoms effectively suppressed electron-hole recombination, thereby prolonging carrier lifetimes. Consequently, the PFC-1@Pt SAC exhibited efficient hydrogen evolution performance with a rate of 2202.5 μmol g-1 h-1 and maintained photocatalytic activity for over 40 h. Our findings provide a systematic approach for developing efficient and stable SACs based on HOFs, expanding the potential applications of HOF materials in photocatalysis.

Abstract:In the energy transition context, the design and synthesis of high‐performance Pt‐based photocatalysts with low Pt content and ultrahigh atom‐utilization efficiency for hydrogen production are essential. Herein, w e report a facile approach for decorating atomically dispersed Pt cocatalysts having single‐atom (SA) and atomic cluster dual active sites on CdS nanorods (PtSA+C/CdS) via atomic layer deposition. The size of the cocatalyst and the spatial intimacy of the cocatalyst active sites are precisely engineered at the atomic scale. The PtSA+C/CdS photocatalysts show the optimized photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity, achieving a reaction rate of 80.4 mmol h−1 g−1, which is 1.6‐ and 7.3‐fold higher than those of the PtSA/CdS and PtNP/CdS photocatalysts, respectively. Thorough characterization and theoretical calculations reveal that the enhanced photocatalytic activity is due to a remarkable synergy between SAs and atomic clusters as dual active sites, which are responsible for water adsorption–dissociation and hydrogen desorption, respectively. A similar synergetic effect is found in a representative Pt/TiO2 system, indicating the generality of o ur strategy. This study demonstrates the significance of the synergy between active sites for enhancing the reaction efficiency, opening a new avenue for the rational design of atomically dispersed photocatalysts with high efficiency. Abstract:Atomically dispersed Pt single atoms (SAs) have been reported to be a highly effective co-catalyst on TiO 2 for photocatalytic H 2 generation. Many TiO 2 supports have been explored for hosting Pt SAs. Particularly 1D titania hosts allow for an optimized light and charge carrier management. But, attached Pt SAs often suffer from agglomeration during the photocatalytic process. In this context, titania-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), such as MIL-125, have attracted wide attention, as they provide stable anchoring sites for Pt SAs. To combine the beneficial features of the 1D TiO 2 morphology with the SA stability, we introduce here a hierarchical structure, where the Pt SAs are dispersed in MOF-derived porous oxide features that are embedded in aligned anodic TiO 2 nanotubes. This hybrid structure is intrinsically (within the nanotubes) synthesized and combines the excellent light harvesting and carrier transport properties of titania nanotubes with the beneficial features of MOF. As a result of this synergy, we obtain not only a high photocatalytic H 2 evolution efficiency but most importantly a remarkably long-term stability of H 2 evolution under UV light (365 nm) or simulated solar light (AM 1.5).

Abstract:The solar-driven hydrogen evolution from water splitting provides an ideal protocol for alleviating the global energy crisis and environmental issues. However, the efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is often limited by poor light-absorption ability, sluggish electron-hole kinetics, and ineffective charge transfer. Herein, a pyridine-contained covalent triazine framework was delicately designed to facilitate single-atom Co immobilization (Co 1 -PCTF), exhibiting an impressive hydrogen evolution rate of 2562.4 μmol‧g -1 ‧h -1 , which is much higher than that of the pristine CTF. It has been experimentally and theoretically demonstrated that the introduction of the pyridine ring significantly enhanced the π-conjugation degree, optimizing the band structure and extending the visible-light absorption. The highly dispersed Co atoms show notable electron-rich property, promoting charge separation and offering abundant active sites for H + reduction. Additionally, the robust Co-N bridge with a large potential difference creates a built-in electronic field for efficient directional transfer from organic substrate to the Co site. This study provides novel insights into the rational design of CTF-based advanced photocatalysts with high activity and durability.

Constructing Pd-N interactions in Pd/g-C3N4 to improve the charge dynamics for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Abstract:The formation of chemical bonds between metal ions and their supports is an effective strategy to achieve good catalytic activity. However, both the synthesis of active metal species on a support and control of their coordination environment are still challenging. Here, we show the use of an organic compound to produce tubular carbon nitride (TCN) as a support for Pd nanoparticles (NPs), creating a composite material (NP-Pd-TCN). It was found that Pd ions preferentially bind with the electron-rich N atoms of TCN, leading to strong metal-support interactions that benefit charge transfer from g-C3N4 to Pd. X-ray absorption spectroscopy further revealed that the metal-support interactions resulted in the formation of Pd-N bonds, which are responsible for the improvement in the charge dynamics as evidenced by the results from various techniques including photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, photocurrent measurements, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Owing to the good dynamical properties, NP-Pd-TCN was used for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution under visible-light irradiation (λ > 420 nm) and an excellent evolution rate of ∼ 381 µmol·h−1 (0.02 g of the photocatalyst) was attained. This work aims to promote a strategy to synthesize efficient photocatalysts for hydrogen production by controllably introducing metal nanoparticles on a support and in the meantime forming chemical bonds to achieve intimate metal-support contact.

Abstract:AbstractIt is highly desirable but challenging to optimize the structure of photocatalysts at the atomic scale to facilitate the separation of electron–hole pairs for enhanced performance. Now, a highly efficient photocatalyst is formed by assembling single Pt atoms on a defective TiO2 support (Pt1/def‐TiO2). Apart from being proton reduction sites, single Pt atoms promote the neighboring TiO2 units to generate surface oxygen vacancies and form a Pt‐O‐Ti3+ atomic interface. Experimental results and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the Pt‐O‐Ti3+ atomic interface effectively facilitates photogenerated electrons to transfer from Ti3+ defective sites to single Pt atoms, thereby enhancing the separation of electron–hole pairs. This unique structure makes Pt1/def‐TiO2 exhibit a record‐level photocatalytic hydrogen production performance with an unexpectedly high turnover frequency of 51423 h−1, exceeding the Pt nanoparticle supported TiO2 catalyst by a factor of 591.

Abstract:The covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) have recently become a new generation of organic semiconductor for photocatalytic hydrogen production from water splitting because of their great application potentials. However, the CTFs need to be combined with noble-metal-cocatalysts to achieve photocatalytic water splitting. Herein, we reported the noble-metal-free Ni2P/CTF composites as an efficient catalyst for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. With increasing the Ni2P alloy loading on the surface of CTF, the photocatalytic activity increases obviously and then decreases gradually, and the highest photocatalytic H2 evolution rate is achieved for 2.8%Ni2P/CTF, which is almost the same as that of 3.0%Pt/CTF photocatalyst. It has been revealed that the Ni2P alloy act as a cocatalyst for effectively suppressing the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes, promoting the separation and migration of the charge carriers, thereby improving the efficiency of photocatalytic H2 evolution. This work provides a promising strategy for preparation of cheap and stable photocatalytic system based on CTF for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution under visible-light irradiation.

Abstract:Utilizing spontaneous polarization field to harness charge transfer kinetics is a promising strategy to boost photocatalytic performance. Herein, a novel Cu atom clusters/PtCu alloy nanocubes coloaded on nitrogen-rich triazole-based C3N5 (PtCu-C3N5) with dipole field was constructed through facile photo-deposition and impregnation method. The dipole field-drive spontaneous polarization in C3N5 acts as a charge-transfer bridge to promote directional electron migration from C3N5 to Cu atom clusters/PtCu alloy. Through the synergistic effects between Cu atom clusters, PtCu alloy and dipole field in C3N5, the optimized Pt2Cu3-C3N5 achieved a record-high performance with H2 formation rate of 4090.4 μmol g-1 h-1 under visible light, about 154.4-fold increase compared with pristine C3N5 (26.5 μmol g-1 h-1). Moreover, the apparent quantum efficiency was up to 25.33 % at 320 nm, which is greatly superior than most previous related-works. The directional charge transfer mechanism was analyzed in detail through various characterizations and DFT calculations. This work offers a novel pathway to construct high-efficiency multi-metal photocatalysts for solar energy conversion.
Bridging effect of Co heteroatom between g-C3N4 and Pt NPs for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Abstract:To achieve a highly efficient charge transfer and separation for photocatalysis, we propose a bridging effect to construct a direct charge transfer path in g-C3N4 via introducing Co atoms into the nitride pores of g-C3N4 to trigger a superficial potential trap. By utilizing such superficial potential trap, the Co atom can bridge the ultrafine Pt NPs and g-C3N4 as catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction. The bridging effect of Co heteroatom in g-C3N4(Co)/Pt can rapidly transfer the photo-generated electrons on g-C3N4 to Pt NP surface, thus significantly improving the charge separation efficiency. Moreover, the water molecule is more easily dissociated by Co atom bridge, enabling its kinetics favorable for photocatalytic hydrogen reaction. As a consequence, the photocatalytic H2 evolution rate of g-C3N4(Co)/Pt reaches 7.145 mmol g−1 h−1 with an excellent apparent quantum efficiency of 19.0% at 420 nm, which is 145.8 times than that of pristine g-C3N4.

Abstract:This work focuses on the structure design of Pt-based alloys, and their influences on 2D-CdS semiconductor photocatalyst in hydrogen (H 2 ) generation reaction from water-splitting under visible light, using traditional experimental techniques and DFT calculations as Pd concave nanocube (Pd CNCs) as a template, PtPd x alloy with cuboctahedron core-shell structure (PtPd x NPs) and cuboctahedron nanoframe (PtPd y NFs) were successfully synthesized via wet chemical routes. The structure of Pt-based alloys was certified by XRD, HRTEM, XPS, and ICP. The Pt-based co-catalysts were photo-deposited on 2D-CdS in an aqueous solution of (NH 4 ) 2 SO 3 while the reaction for photo-generating of H 2 occurred. The obtained photocatalysts show excellent activity towards hydrogen generation, i.e., in ascending order, Pd CNCs/2D-CdS (46.1 mmol/h/g) < PtPd 1.8 NPs/2D-CdS (55.4 mmol/h/g) < PtPd 0.2 NFs/2D-CdS (71.7 mmol/h/g, QE=61.46%, λ=420 nm). Photoelectrochemical tests, ESR, and work function s results indicate that PtPd 0.2 NFs have excellent photoelectrochemical performance, the longest lifetime of electrons, and the highest work function, respectively. Moreover, DFT calculations unveil that PtPd 0.2 has the largest surface energy and the lowest activation energy ΔG H* which results in the fast charge transfer rate at the PtPd 0.2 /2D-CdS interface. This work offers a novel thought into the structural design of Pt-based co-catalysts applied in photocatalytic hydrogen generation from water-splitting.

Abstract:A simple procedure of calcination under an Ar atmosphere has been successfully applied to create a covalent triazine framework bearing pyridine-type carbonitride moieties (PCN@CTF). The appending of PCN on the CTF led to visible light absorption at up to 600 nm in the UV/Vis diffuse-reflectance spectra. Photoluminescence and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy have been applied to clarify how modification of the CTF with PCN enhanced the separation efficiency of photoexcited charge carriers. An optimized 1%PCN@CTF sample showed the highest photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) rate of 170.2 ± 2.3 μmol g−1·h−1, 3.9 times faster than that over the pristine CTF. The apparent quantum efficiency of the HER peaked at (7.57 ± 0.10)% at 490 nm. This representative 1% PCN@CTF sample maintained continuous function for at least 15 h. This work provides new guidance for modification with PCN materials as a means of obtaining high photocatalytic efficiency and sheds light on the effect of appended pyridine rings on a CTF.

Direct observation of dynamic interfacial bonding and charge transfer in metal-free photocatalysts for efficient hydrogen evolution

Abstract:Herein, we employed a simple approach for incorporating covalent triazine frameworks (CTF) with ultrathin black phosphorus (BP) nanosheets, resulting in one of the highest hydrogen evolution activities (17.1 mmol•h-1 g-1) among all reported metal-free photocatalysts. More importantly, a detailed mechanistic study on dynamic charge transfer and interfacial bonding was conducted by an in-situ irradiation X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (SI-XPS). The related results clearly reveal that the interfacial P-C bonding between ultrathin BP and CTFs is crucial for promoting both photocatalytic activity and stability. More specifically, under light irradiation, the interfacial P-C bonds were remarkably enhanced, which efficiently accelerate the photo-generated electron transfer from CTF to BP surfaces for hydrogen evolution reactions. Moreover, owing to the electron enrichments on BP for effectively restraining surface oxidation, the photocatalytic stability of CTF/BP has also been significantly improved. This work not only reported an effective way for fabricating highly efficient metal-free photocatalysts, but also provided the unique insights into the fundamental understanding of the intrinsic mechanisms during photocatalytic reactions.

Abstract:Pt nanoparticles (NPs) are often used as cocatalysts to enhance the photocatalytic hydrogen production catalyzed by the metal organic framework (MOF) materials. The catalytic efficiency of many Pt/MOF systems can be greatly improved when Pt NPs are used as cocatalysts. In this work, the Pt/20%-MIL-125-(SCH3)2 was chosen as the template material to understand the functional role of a Pt metal cocatalyst in the catalytic process. Experimentally, the catalytic activity of Pt/20%-MIL-125-(SCH3)2 is more than 100 times that of the system without the help of Pt NPs. Firstly, we proposed a searching algorithm, which is based on the combined Monte Carlo (MC) method and principal component analysis (PCA) algorithm, to find that the most probable adsorption site of the Pt13 nanocluster loaded on the (001) surface of 20%-MIL-125-(SCH3)2. Next, by using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) methods, we revealed that the accumulation of some positive charges on the Pt13 cluster and proton adsorbed on the Pt13 cluster, which can promote the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes, thus improving the photocatalytic efficiency. This work not only provides a method to obtain the adsorption configuration of metal clusters on various MOFs but also provides a new insight into increasing photocatalytic efficiency for H2 production in Pt/MOF systems.

Abstract:It is highly desirable yet remains challenging to improve the dispersion and usage of noble metal cocatalysts, beneficial to charge transfer in photocatalysis. Herein, for the first time, single Pt atoms are successfully confined into a metal–organic framework (MOF), in which electrons transfer from the MOF photosensitizer to the Pt acceptor for hydrogen production by water splitting under visible‐light irradiation. Remarkably, the single Pt atoms exhibit a superb activity, giving a turnover frequency of 35 h−1, ≈30 times that of Pt nanoparticles stabilized by the same MOF. Ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy further unveils that the single Pt atoms confined into the MOF provide highly efficient electron transfer channels and density functional theory calculations indicate that the introduction of single Pt atoms into the MOF improves the hydrogen binding energy, thus greatly boosting the photocatalytic H2 production activity.

Abstract:As a cocatalyst, chemical states of Pt have significant effects on hydrogen evolution activity of photocatalysts, but the effects have not been elucidated. Herein, we report an effective strategy to greatly improve hydrogen production via regulating the chemical states of Pt. A highly efficient C3N4 photocatalyst with high Pt0 proportion (denoted as 1.0%-Pt/CN-BH-H) is successfully prepared. Under visible-light condition (lambda >= 420 nm), 1.0%-Pt/ CN-BH-H (Pt0 proportion is 60.1%) affords -2.316 mmol h-1 g-1 of hydrogen, approximately four-fold higher than that obtained by a photodeposited sample 1.0%-Pt/CN-P (Pt0 proportion is 8.2%, -0.605 mmol h-1 g-1 of hydrogen). Atmospheric treatment increases the amount of Pt0 species by causing electrons transfer from N element to Pt2+ in 1.0%-Pt/CN-BH-H, as proved by in situ experimental investigation and DFT calculations. Mass formation of the Pt0 species facilitates charge separation. In addition, Pt0 has a lower hydrogen adsorption energy than that of Pt2+; therefore, photocatalysts containing Pt0 show an improved hydrogen-evolution performance.

We predesigned and constructed different molecular interfaces by fabricating ordered or amorphous π skeletons, installing ligating or non-ligating walls and engineering hydrophobic or hydrophilic pores. This systematic interfacial control over electron transfer, active site immobilisation and water transport enables to identify their distinct roles in the photocatalytic process. The frameworks, combined ordered π skeletons, ligating walls and hydrophilic channels, work under 300–1000 nm with non-noble metal co-catalyst and achieve a hydrogen evolution rate over 11 mmol g –1 h –1 , a quantum yield of 3.6% at 600 nm and a three-order-of-magnitude-increased turnover frequency of 18.8 h –1 compared to those obtained with hydrophobic networks. This integrated interfacial design approach is a step towards designing solar-to-chemical energy conversion systems.

Abstract:In order to promote photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction in covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs), it is imperative to functionalize highly crystalline CTFs. Guided by theoretical predictions and calculations, modifications are applied to CTF‐1 using functional groups with varying electronic effects. The improved photocatalytic activity is witnessed by the incorporation of electron‐donating groups. Experimental findings indicate that chemical modification optimizes the valence band position, broadens visible light absorption, and accelerates the charge carrier dynamics. The high crystalline covalent triazine framework‐1 (CTF‐1), composed of alternating triazine and phenylene, has emerged as an efficient photocatalyst for solar‐driven hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, it is of great challenge to further improve photocatalytic HER performance via increasing crystallinity due to its near‐perfect crystallization. Herein, an alternative strategy of scaffold functionalization is employed to optimize the energy band structure of crystalline CTF‐1 for boosting hydrogen‐evolving activity. Guided by the computational predictions, versatile CTF‐based polymer photocatalysts are prepared with different functional groups (OH, NH2, COOH) using binary polymerization for practical hydrogen production. Experiment evidence verifies that the introduction of a limited number of electron‐donating groups is sufficient to maintain high crystallinity in CTF, modulate the band structure, broaden visible light absorption, and consequently enhance its photophysical properties. Notably, the functionalization with OH exhibits the most positive effect on CTF‐1, delivering a photocatalytic activity with a hydrogen‐producing rate exceeding 100 μmol h−1.

Abstract:Abstract While the surface charge state of co-catalysts plays a critical role for boosting photocatalysis, studies on surface charge regulation via their precise structure control remain extremely rare. Herein, metal-organic framework (MOF) stabilized bimetallic Pd@Pt nanoparticles, which feature adjustable Pt coordination environment and a controlled structure from core-shell to single-atom alloy (SAA), have been fabricated. Significantly, apart from the formation of a Mott-Schottky junction in a conventional way, we elucidate that Pt surface charge regulation can be alternatively achieved by changing its coordination environment and the structure of the Pd@Pt co-catalyst, where the charge between Pd and Pt is redistributed. As a result, the optimized Pd10@Pt1/MOF composite, which involves an unprecedented SAA co-catalyst, exhibits exceptionally high photocatalytic hydrogen production activity, far surpassing its corresponding counterparts.

Abstract:The development of near-infrared (NIR) functional fluorescent dyes has gained increasing attention over the last few decades. Herein, we describe the development of a unique type of xanthene-cyanine fused NIR fluorophores, XC dyes, formed by reacting chloro-substituted cyanine with resorcin or its analogues under anhydrous conditions. XC dyes are a hybrid of cyanine and xanthene. The preliminary mechanistic studies indicate that the formation of XC compounds likely includes a sequence of cyclization and oxidation. XC dyes have absorption and emission in the NIR region, and their fluorescence properties can be controlled by modifications of the key hydroxyl and amine groups. The novel XC NIR dyes are advantageous over previously developed merocyanine dyes NIR dyes in their chemical stability against strong nucleophiles. Quantum chemical calculations reveal that the distinct properties of XC and HD dyes can be attributed to their structural differences. By taking advantage of the superior properties of XC dyes, we have further constructed a new NIR fluorescent probe, XC-H2 S, which is capable of monitoring both the concentration- and time-dependent variations of H2 S in living animals, highlighting the value of XC NIR dyes. We expect that the unique XC NIR dyes developed herein will find broader applications than HD NIR dyes as fluorescent platforms for the development of a wide variety of NIR fluorescent probes, in particular, those suitable for targets of interest that have strong nucleophilic character.

Abstract:Nitrogen-rich graphitic carbon nitrogen (g-C3N5) has garnered significant attention in photocatalytic hydrogen production due to its unique physicochemical properties. However, g-C3N5 faces persistent challenges stemming from rapid carrier recombination. In this study, we successfully synthesized a Pd/C3N5-K,I photocatalyst through sequential doping of non-metallic heteroatoms and metal nanoparticles. The Pd/C3N5-K,I photocatalyst demonstrates a remarkable enhancement in photocatalytic H2 evolution rate (2.9 mmol g−1 h−1), approximately 14 times higher than that of pure g-C3N5 (0.2 mmol g−1 h−1). Characterization and calculation analyses reveal that iodine doping into the g-C3N5 skeleton forms planar C-I bonds, facilitating C3N5 layers electron-hole pair separation. The subsequent insertion of Pd nanoparticles between the layers leads to electron accumulation on C3N5-K,I, while resulting in hole concentration on Pd nanoparticles, thereby facilitating thorough spatial separation of electron-hole pairs. The strategic co-doping of iodine and palladium nanoparticles effectively restrains carrier recombination of g-C3N5 by connecting intra- and inter-layer interactions. This study constitutes a novel conceptual framework for CN-based photocatalysts, offering a promising approach to improving their performance in hydrogen production applications.
