Abstract:Chiral structures are composed of periodically arranged asymmetric particles. The asymmetry of chiral particles results in extraordinary properties like negative refraction index, giant optical activity and circular dichroism. Consequently, they have applications in super lens and various polarization controllers. There are two types of chiral structures, namely planar and 3D structures. The planar ones usually have three-or fourfold rotational symmetry, which limits the polarization tuning capability. On the other hand, the 3D prototypes are difficult to fabricate and measure. Here, we propose a highly tunable sub-wavelength 3D chiral structure. It can be conveniently manufactured on the single-layer double-side printed circuit board. Based on the proposed idea, a sample converting a linearly polarized wave to a circularly polarized one is demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally. The conversion efficiency is measured to be 60%.

Abstract:Light extinction method with real liquid is difficult to be realized in the experiment of the polarization controlled light intensity modulated SPRi sensor.Meanwhile,the sensor bearslow sensitivity and poor linearity.Therefore,the extinction method of shifting extinction refraction index forward without real liquid is proposed.First,the simulations on optimal optical parameters and their errorsarising from machining and adjustment were carried out through the former method whose extinction refractive indexis locatedat the starting point(pure water)of the measurement curve.It''s indicated that the errors will cause the shifts of SPRi curve''s lowest pointon the refractive index axis.Consequently the performance of the sensor will be influenced.Then,the extinction refractive index was shifted to 1.325,and the optimal values of the parameters were simulated.The experimental results show that compared with the former method,the errors in 1.325 extinction method do not make the measurement curve non-monotonic,and high sensitivity,good linearity are obtained.The refractive index resolution is 1.85×10-6 RIU and the corresponding detection limit of NaCl solution is 35 mg/L.The proposed method improves the applicability of SPRi sensor with the existence of errors,and highly sensitive and throughput detection of trace amounts of samples in aqueous solutions can be achieved.

Abstract:Optoelectronic effects differentiating absorption of right and left circularly polarized photons in thin films of chiral materials are typically prohibitively small for their direct photocurrent observation. Chiral metasurfaces increase the electronic sensitivity to circular polarization, but their out-of-plane architecture entails manufacturing and performance trade-offs. Here, we show that nanoporous thin films of chiral nanoparticles enable high sensitivity to circular polarization due to light-induced polarization-dependent ion accumulation at nanoparticle interfaces. Self-assembled multilayers of gold nanoparticles modified with L-phenylalanine generate a photocurrent under right-handed circularly polarized light as high as 2.41 times higher than under left-handed circularly polarized light. The strong plasmonic coupling between the multiple nanoparticles producing planar chiroplasmonic modes facilitates the ejection of electrons, whose entrapment at the membrane-electrolyte interface is promoted by a thick layer of enantiopure phenylalanine. Demonstrated detection of light ellipticity with equal sensitivity at all incident angles mimics phenomenological aspects of polarization vision in marine animals. The simplicity of self-assembly and sensitivity of polarization detection found in optoionic membranes opens the door to a family of miniaturized fluidic devices for chiral photonics.

Abstract:Intensity-modulated surface plasmon resonance (SPR) array sensor based on polarization control was introduced and the impacts of incident angle, gold firm thickness, polarizer angle, wavelength and data processing on its sensitivity and measuring range were analyzed. It was concluded that in an easily controllable measurement range, an appropriate parameter selection can be set and produce high sensitivity with a simple optical and mechanical structure and lower production costs. This scheme can be widely applied to the high-throughput detection of bimolecular interaction analysis, environment monitoring, food safety, pharmaceutical analysis, biomedical engineering and other fields.

Abstract:(Ultracompact chiral plasmonic nanostructures with unique chiral light‐matter interactions are vital for future photonic technologies. However, previous studies are limited to reporting their steady‐state performance, presenting a fundamental obstacle to the development of high‐speed optical devices with polarization sensitivity. Here, we provide a comprehensive analysis of ultrafast chiroptical response of chiral gold nano‐oligomers using time‐resolved polarimetric measurements. We observe significant differences in terms of the absorption intensity, thus hot electron generation, and hot carrier decay time upon polarized photo‐pumping, which are explained by a phenomenological model of the helicity‐resolved optical transitions. Moreover, the chiroptical signal is switchable by reversing the direction of the pump pulse, demonstrating the versatile modulation of polarization selection in a single device. Our results offer fundamental insights into the helicity‐resolved optical transitions in photoexcited chiral plasmonics and could facilitate the development of high‐speed polarization‐sensitive flat optics with potential applications in nanophotonics and quantum optics.) Abstract:Chiral enantiomers have significant differences in biochemical functions. The use of THz wave polarization detection to characterize the optical properties of chiral substances is of great significance to the development of life science and the identification and application of chiral substances. However, the traditional polarization detection procedures of THz waves are complex, which limits the study of chiral substances. Herein, we proposed a high-sensitivity THz polarization detector, which can simultaneously obtain the change information of amplitude, phase, and polarization state through a single measurement. The optical rotation and elliptical angle of solid and liquid D/L-Glutamic acid 5-methyl ester in the THz band are studied. Then it is verified that anisotropic interference may occur in the preparation of solid samples. Finally, the effects of sample content and thickness on polarization are obtained. The experimental results show that different chirality has the opposite effect on the state of polarization, and the difference between chiral enantiomers can be detected by this method. This work is of great significance for understanding the optical properties of chiral substances and promoting the development of chiral recognition.

Abstract:Control of light polarization is a key technology in modern photonics including application to optical manipulation of quantum information. The requisite is to obtain large rotation in isotropic media with small loss. We report on extraordinary optical activity in a planar dielectric on-waveguide photonic crystal structure, which has no in-plane birefringence and shows polarization rotation of more than 25 degrees for transmitted light. We demonstrate that in the planar chiral photonic crystal, the coupling of the normally incident light wave with low-loss waveguide and Fabry-Pérot resonance modes results in a dramatic enhancement of the optical activity.

Abstract:We theoretically investigated a format of two-dimensional dielectric-chiral photonic crystal structure that is composed of a dispersive chiral medium embedded in a dielectric background. The photonic band structure shows distinctive dispersion relationship for circularly polarized electromagnetic waves, leading to a number of intriguing wave properties, namely chirality dependent “node switching,” polarization sensitive transmission and handedness dependent mode localization. All of these effects are attributed to the strong interaction between the local resonant modes around the dispersive chiral rods and the Bloch modes of the bulk waves. The chirality dependent properties can find tremendous applications in polarization based optoelectronics devices and rapid separation of chiral compounds in pharmaceutical industry.

Abstract:Strong coupling system with plasmons and emitters is an attractive field in the light-matter interaction for the hybrid states combined with the properties of plasmons and emitters. When the emitter are chiral molecules, surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) provide an excellent research platform which possesses the advantages of chiral field enhancement and electromagnetic wave transmission in the subwavelength size and the chiral strong coupling system has wide applications in optical logic device and biological detection in nanoscale. We experimentally investigate the circular dichroism (CD) of the system with SPPs and chiral <i>J</i>-aggregates from the weak coupling regime to the strong coupling regime. The Rabi splitting of 143.3/154.5 meV, which is a significant phenomenon of the strong coupling can be observed both in the CD and the extinctions. Further experimental results show that, in the strong coupling regime, when the system achieves resonance, the intensity of CD signals corresponding to the upper energy band is stronger than that of the lower energy band, different from the behavior in the extinctions. We develop a method to calculate the dispersion relation in the chiral strong coupling system and explain the extinctions as well as the optical chirality of the hybrid states. Abstract:A transmission optical rotation detection scheme based on a weak measurement was proposed for the chirality detection of enantiomers. In this transmission weak measurement system in the frequency domain, the optical activity of the chiral liquid sample was estimated with the central wavelength shift, by modifying the preselected polarization state with the optical rotation (OR). The central wavelength shift of output spectra is sensitive to the OR angle but immune to the interference of the refractive index change caused by measuring circumstances. Two isomers of chiral amino acid acquired opposite responses with this system, and a resolution of 2.17 x 10(-9) mol/ml for Proline detection could be obtained. Such a resolution is about 2 orders of magnitude higher than that of common methods, which shows a high sensitivity. This proposed weak measurement scenario suggested an approach to polarimetry and provided a way to accurately assess molecular chirality. Published by AIP Publishing.

Abstract:Sensing chirality is of fundamental importance to many fields, including analytical and biological chemistry, pharmacology, and fundamental physics. Recent developments have extended optical chiral sensing using microwaves, fs pulses, superchiral light, and photoionization. The most widely used methods are the traditional methods of circular dichroism and optical rotation (OR). However, chiral signals are typically very weak, and their measurement is limited by larger time-dependent backgrounds and by imperfect and slow subtraction procedures. Here, we demonstrate a pulsed-laser bowtie-cavity-enhanced polarimeter with counter-propagating beams, which solves these background problems: the chiral signals are enhanced by the number of cavity passes; the effects of linear birefringence are suppressed by a large induced intracavity Faraday rotation; and rapid signal reversals are effected by reversing the Faraday rotation and subtracting signals from the counter-propagating beams. These advantages allow measurements of absolute chiral signals in environments where background subtractions are not feasible: we measure optical rotation from chiral vapour in open air, and from chiral liquids in the evanescent wave (EW) produced by total internal reflection at a prism surface. EW-OR of (+)-maltodextrin and (-)-fructose solutions confirm the Drude-Condon model for Maxwell's equations in isotropic optically active media. In particular, the effective optical rotation path length, near index matching, is equal to the Goos-Hänchen shift of the EW. The limits of this polarimeter, when using a continuous-wave laser locked to a stable high-finesse cavity, should match sensitivity measurements for linear birefringence ($3\times 10^{-13}$ rad), which is several orders of magnitude more sensitive than current chiral detection limits, transforming the power of chiral sensing in many fields.

Abstract:Photons with spin angular momentum possess intrinsic chirality which underpins many phenomena including nonlinear optics1, quantum optics2, topological photonics3 and chiroptics4. Intrinsic chirality is weak in natural materials, and recent theoretical proposals5-7 aimed to enlarge circular dichroism by resonant metasurfaces supporting bound states in the continuum that enhance substantially chiral light-matter interaction. Those insightful works resort to three-dimensional sophisticated geometries, which are too challenging to be realized for optical frequencies8. Therefore, most of the experimental attempts9-11 showing strong circular dichroism rely on false/extrinsic chirality by employing either oblique incidence9, 10 or structural anisotropy11. Here, we report on the experimental realization of true/intrinsic chiral response with resonant metasurfaces where the engineered slant geometry breaks both in-plane and out-of-plane symmetries. Our result marks the first observation of intrinsic chiral bound states in the continuum with near-unity chiral dichroism of 0.93 and record-high quality factor exceeding 2663 for visible frequencies. Our chiral metasurfaces promise a plethora of applications in chiral light sources and detectors, chiral sensing, valleytronics and asymmetric photocatalysis.

Abstract:Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) refers to the differentiation of the left-handed and right-handed emissions of the chiral systems at the excited-state. Serving as a compensate characterization method to circular dichroism (CD), CPL can detect the changes in fluorescence in chiral system, which could be more efficient in recognizing the chiral species. While CPL can be generated by attaching the luminophores with the chiral unit through covalent bond, the non-covalent bonding of the fluorescent chromophore with the chiral species or helical nanostructures can also induce the CPL and their changes. Thus, CPL can be used as an alternative detecting technique for sensing the chiral spices. In this review, we summarize typical recent advances in chirality sensing based on CPL. The determination of the absolute configuration of chiral compounds and encrypted sensing is also discussed. We hope to provide a useful and powerful insight into the construction of chemical sensors based on CPL.

Abstract:The topological response of matter to electromagnetic fields is a property in high demand in materials design and metrology due to its robustness against noise and decoherence, stimulating recent advances in ultrafast photonics. Embedding topological properties into the enantio-sensitive optical response of chiral molecules could therefore enhance the efficiency and robustness of chiral optical discrimination. Here we achieve such a topological embedding by introducing the concept of chiral topological light~-- a light beam which displays chirality locally, with an azimuthal distribution of its handedness described globally by a topological charge. The topological charge is mapped onto the azimuthal intensity modulation of the non-linear optical response, where enantio-sensitivity is encoded into its spatial rotation. The spatial rotation is robust against intensity fluctuations and imperfect local polarization states of the driving field. Our theoretical results show that chiral topological light enables detection of percentage-level enantiomeric excesses in randomly oriented mixtures of chiral molecules, opening a way to new, extremely sensitive and robust chiro-optical spectroscopies with attosecond time resolution.
