Abstract:Ru-based catalysts have shown great potential for the environmentally friendly industrialization of acetylene hydrochlorination. However, the high cost and reduction of active sites in Ru catalysts have limited their practical applications. In this study, we propose a strategy to optimize the electronic structure of Ru single-atom catalysts by leveraging the strong coordination ability of ligands with the metal and apply this strategy to acetylene hydrochlorination. The experimental results verify that the performance of the catalyst increases with the increase of the ligand. Characterization results indicate that ligands not only optimize the electronic properties of Ru single atoms by forming a RuCl 2 -N structure, but also enhance the adsorption of reactants on the catalysts. DFT calculations reveal that the ligand-modified Ru species can efficiently adsorb and activate acetylene molecules, while the adjacent excessive ligand can adsorb and dissociate HCl molecules. This ultimately leads to an addition reaction between acetylene and HCl through a hydrogen overflow mechanism.

Abstract:A modular synthesis of Ru(II)-NHC-diamine complexes from readily available chiral N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) and chiral diamines is disclosed for the first time. The well-defined Ru(II)-NHC-diamine complexes show unique structure and coordination chemistry including an unusual tridentate coordination effect of 1,2-diphenylethylenediamine. The isolated air- and moisture-stable Ru(II)-NHC-diamine complexes act as versatile precatalysts for the asymmetric hydrogenation of isocoumarines, benzothiophene 1,1-dioxides, and ketones. Moreover, on the basis of the identification of reaction intermediates by stoichiometric reactions and NMR experiments, together with the DFT calculations, a possible catalytic cycle was proposed.

Abstract:Ru/AC catalyst used in acetylene hydrochlorination reaction has several drawbacks such as poor dispersion, metal loss, serious carbon deposition, and insufficient active sites. To address these issues of traditional Ru/AC, in this study, the supported Ru-Lx/AC catalysts were synthesized by the coordination of ruthenium precursor and several structural triazine ligands. The complexation of heteroatomic structure to Ru atom formed a local active domain, which is more conducive to the synergistic adsorption and activation of the initial reactants, and further optimizes the reaction microenvironment. The spatial topological structure with conjugated structures effectively promoted the transfer of electrons between the heteroatoms and the ruthenium precursors, facilitating the stabilization of active Ru species. The newly developed synthetic process also increased dispersion of reaction components and impeded the sintering of ruthenium components promoted by the local structural forces. The optimum Ru-1,3,5-triazine/AC (Ru-L1/AC) catalyst exhibited 162% higher acetylene conversion than the benchmark Ru/AC catalyst. The significantly improved activity and stability of the optimized catalyst will have a huge application prospect in industry.

Abstract:The development of efficient and stable non-mercury catalysts for the chlor-alkali industry is desirable but remains a great challenge. Herein, we design a series of ruthenium catalysts for acetylene hydrochlorination by regulating the electronic structure of ruthenium ions through coordination with various ligands (thiourea, phenanthroline, and L–lactic). The turnover frequencies (TOFs) and apparent activation energies for the acetylene hydrochlorination have a linear relationship with the binding energy of Ru3+ in the ruthenium catalysts. The synergetic effect of the ruthenium ion and ligands plays an important role in acetylene hydrochlorination. The Ru–Thi/AC catalyst with thiourea as the ligand shows the highest TOF and stability in acetylene hydrochlorination. The present study provides a rational method to regulate the electronic structure of supported metal catalysts with high catalytic performance exhibited by the carbon-supported heterogeneous catalysts.Controllable regulation of electronic structure of Ru/C catalyst with high activity and stability for acetylene hydrochlorination by a simple coordination strategy. The TOF value and activated energy has a linear relationship with binding energy of ruthenium ions.

Regulating the coordination environment of Ru single-atom catalysts and unravelling the reaction path of acetylene hydrochlorination

Abstract:In this work, DFT calculations were used firstly to simulate the nitrogen coordinated metal single-atom catalysts (M-Nx SACs, M = Hg, Cu, Au, and Ru) to predict their catalytic activities in acetylene hydrochlorination. The DFT results showed that Ru-Nx SACs had the best catalytic performance among the four catalysts, and Ru-Nx SACs could effectively inhibit the reduction of ruthenium cation. To verify the DFT results, Ru-Nx SACs were fabricated by pyrolyzing MOFs in-situ spatially confined metal precursors. The N coordination environment could be controlled by changing the pyrolysis temperature. Catalytic performance tests indicated that low N coordination number (Ru–N2, Ru–N3) exhibited excellent catalytic activity and stability compared to RuCl3 catalyst. DFT calculations further revealed that Ru–N2 and Ru–N3 had a tendency to activate HCl at the first step of reaction, whereas Ru–N4 tended to activate C2H2. These findings will serve as a reference for the design and control of metal active sites.

Abstract:Despite the potential of Ru-based catalysts to achieve green sustainability in acetylene hydrochlorination, they are plagued by a lack of persistent active sites. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs), considered a novel type of ionic liquid (IL) analogue, can coordinate with metals and adsorb HCl. Hence, to investigate the role of DES in modifying Ru-based catalysts for acetylene hydrochlorination, a range of Ru-DES/AC catalysts were prepared and evaluated for their catalytic performance. The experimental results showed that the formation of DES from hydrogen bond donor (HBD) and hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) resulted in a more negative electrostatic potential (ESP) minima and stronger electron-donating ability. The interaction of DES with Ru precursors can effectively modulate the microchemical environment around the Ru active site and improve the dispersion of the active components, thereby boosting the activity of Ru-DES/AC catalysts. The addition of DES not only makes the Ru species more stable but also reduces the formation of coke deposition, thus enhancing the stability of the catalyst. Meanwhile, we found that the synergistic effect between HBD and HBA in DES on the performance enhancement of Ru-based catalysts is universal. Therefore, to scientifically design more efficient catalysts, we evaluated the potential descriptors of DES.

Abstract:To improve the activity and stability of Ru-based catalysts with a carbon support for acetylene hydrochlorination, activated carbon (AC) was consecutively modified by nitration, amination and pyridine, and the effect of the different carbon supports on the Ru-based catalysts for acetylene hydrochlorination was investigated. The results of the FT-IR studies confirmed that –NO2, –NH2 and –N–H–N groups were separately grafted onto the surface of the AC. Under the same reaction conditions, the modified catalysts exhibited better catalytic activity compared with the original Ru/AC catalyst. Moreover, the catalyst Ru/AC-NHN showed the best catalytic performance with a slight decrease after 48 h from 93.2% to 91.8%. The increase in catalytic activity indicates that the modification with nitrogen functional groups is beneficial for acetylene hydrochlorination.

Abstract:Ru single-atom catalysts have great potential to replace toxic mercuric chloride in acetylene hydrochlorination. However, long-term catalytic stability remains a grand challenge due to the aggregation of Ru atoms caused by over-chlorination. Herein, we synthesize an asymmetric Ru-In atomic pair with vinyl chloride monomer yield (>99.5%) and stability (>600 h) at a gas hourly space velocity of 180 h-1, far surpassing those of the Ru single-atom counterparts. A combination of experimental and theoretical techniques reveals that there is a strong d-p orbital interaction between Ru and In atoms, which not only enables the selective adsorption of acetylene and hydrogen chloride at different atomic sites but also optimizes the electron configuration of Ru. As a result, the intrinsic energy barrier for vinyl chloride generation is lowered, and the thermodynamics of the chlorination process at the Ru site is switched from exothermal to endothermal due to the change of orbital couplings. This work provides a strategy to prevent the deactivation and depletion of active Ru centers during acetylene hydrochlorination.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have sparked gigantic attention due to their high activity, atomic utilization, and unique metal–host coordination environment. A hard-template method with Lewis acid modification strategy was adopted to obtain mesoporous N-doped carbon nanospheres as the host to prepare a Ru SAC for acetylene hydrochlorination. The single site scattered Ru-N-C active structure constructed by the interaction between the metal–support and the heteroatom-rich mesoporous g-NC nanosphere material provides a rich defect structure that promotes the mass transfer of reactants and products. Furthermore, the N-doped support anchors, disperses and modulates the catalytic active domains, stabilizing their active state and enhancing the adsorption and activation of initial reactants. As a result, the obtained Ru SAC possesses excellent catalytic properties and lasting life in a 500-h test, which render it highly promising for industrial applications. Moreover, the clarified catalytic mechanism provides a reference for the preparation of other SACs.

Abstract:Understanding the relationship between catalyst structure and performance is essential for the rational design of active sites for high-performance Cu-ligand catalysts for acetylene hydrochlorination. Herein, two descriptors are informed by data to screen efficient ligands and predict high-performance Cu-ligand catalysts: (1) the reduction potential of Cu 2+ -Cu + and catalytic performance were correlated in a volcano-like manner; (2) the C≡C bond length of C 2 H 2 and catalytic performance were linearly related within the Cu 2+ -Cu + reduction limit. By using the two descriptors, the MPPO (3-methyl-1-phenyl-2-phospholene 1-oxide) ligand was successfully identified and developed into an effective Cu-MPPO catalyst. The conversion of C 2 H 2 of 96.11 % and the selectivity of VCM of 99 % were obtained under the conditions of 180 h −1 , 180 °C, and V HCl : V C2H2 = 1.2. The C 2 H 2 conversion was still above 90 % after running for more than 600 h at 50 h −1 . The excellent activity and exceptional stability of the Cu-MPPO catalyst validate the developed model for optimal ligand selection. Detailed structural characterization and density function theory calculations of the designed catalysts were performed to reveal the relationship between catalyst structure and activity. The results indicated that the addition of MPPO altered the local microenvironment of Cu. The simultaneous increased electron density around Cu and Cl resulted in strengthened HCl adsorption and weakened acetylene adsorption, inhibiting the generation of carbon deposition. In addition, MPPO contributed to suppressing the reduction of Cu species, thus stabilizing the active species. This research provides valuable insights and reference strategies for screening efficient ligands in Cu-ligand catalysts.

Abstract:Ruthenium-based catalysts exhibit excellent catalyst activity in the acetylene hydrochlorination reaction and tend to be a good substitute for mercury-based catalysts due to their cheaper price among the precious metal catalysts. In this work, spin-polarized density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out to investigate the properties of the ruthenium single-atom catalysts supported on six different substrates (four pyridine nitrogen-doped carbon, four or three pyrrole nitrogen-doped carbon, C2N, CN and g-C3N4), and the reaction mechanisms of acetylene hydrochlorination catalyzed by them at 453 K. According to the results of calculations, it could be found that the reaction had the lowest free energy barrier of 16.83 kcal/mol on the Ru@4 × N6 (pyridine nitrogen-doped carbon), while it had the highest free energy barrier of 49.06 kcal/mol on the Ru@g-C3N4. This work will provide a theoretical support for the design of ruthenium single-atom catalysts for acetylene hydrochlorination reaction.

Molecule Saturation Boosts Acetylene Semihydrogenation Activity and Selectivity on a Core-Shell Ruthenium@Palladium Catalyst

Abstract:Increasing selectivity without the expense of activity is desired but challenging in heterogeneous catalysis. By revealing the molecule saturation and adsorption sensitivity on overlayer thickness, strain, and coordination of Pd-based catalysts from first-principles calculations, we designed a stable Pd monolayer (ML) catalyst on a Ru terrace to boost both activity and selectivity of acetylene semihydrogenation. The least saturated molecule is most sensitive to the change in catalyst electronic and geometric properties. By simultaneously compressing the Pd ML and exposing the high coordination sites, the adsorption of more saturated ethylene is considerably weakened to facilitate the desorption for high selectivity. The even stronger weakening to the least saturated acetylene drives its hydrogenation such that it is more exothermic, thereby boosting the activity. Tailoring the molecule saturation and its sensitivity to structure and composition provides a tool for rational design of efficient catalysts.

Abstract:Ligands have been known to profoundly affect the chemical transformations of methane, yet significant challenges remain in shedding light on the underlying mechanisms. Here, we demonstrated that the conversion of methane can be regulated by Ru centered cations with a series of ligands (C, CH, CNH, CHCNH). Gas-phase experiments complemented by theoretical dynamic analysis were performed to explore the essences and principles governing the ligand effect. In contrast to the inert Ru + , [RuC] + , and [RuCNH] + toward CH 4 , the dehydrogenation dominates the reaction of ligand-regulated systems [RuCH] + /CH 4 and [RuCHCNH] + /CH 4 . In active cases, CH performs as active sites which regulates the activation of CH 4 assisted by the "seemingly inert" CNH ligand.

Abstract:Several single-site catalysts have been synthesized through the chelation of polyethyleneimine (PEI) with Ru precursors because of the lack of durable active sites in Ru catalysts for acetylene hydrochlorination. Proper thermal activation successfully constructed the local active domains of Ru–N. Ru species were stabilized in their active states by coordinating N in PEI with the central atom Ru in the Ru/activated carbon (AC) catalyst. The metal and highly electronegative heteroatomic sites in the Ru–N domains augmented the activation ability of reactant molecules synergistically. The synthetic strategy developed led to the dispersion of active metal at the level of a single site. Additionally, more Ru–N–C interfaces formed after appropriate pyrolysis of the catalyst (Ru/AC@PEI-T), increasing the contact area to reactants and improving the catalytic efficiency. The modified Ru/AC@PEI catalyst has significantly enhanced catalytic stability over time, allowing for possible industrial applications.

Abstract:Cu-based catalysts are a promising alternative to toxic mercury catalysts for acetylene hydrochlorination, but their effectiveness is limited due to the poor dispersion and deactivation caused by reduction, agglomeration, and carbon deposition. In this study, the activity and stability of carbon-supported CuCl2 catalysts were largely improved through introducing N-heterocyclic ketones. Remarkably, the N-methyl-2-pyridone (NM2P) coordinated Cu-based catalysts possessed an acetylene conversion over 95% with a better stability under the reaction condition of T = 180 °C, GHSV (C2H2) of 80 h–1, and VHCl/VC2H2 = 1.2. The combined results of characterization and exhaustive density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the O-Cu coordination between NM2P ligand and Cu cation strengthened the combination of reactants and Cu active sites, lowering the key reaction energy barrier, leading to a high activity. Meanwhile, the addition of NM2P ligand significantly inhibited the reduction of Cu2+ to Cu+/Cu0, avoiding the formation of CuCl aggregates and the coking caused by Cu0, enhancing the catalytic stability. Overall, our study provides important insights into the design and optimization of Cu-based catalysts for acetylene hydrochlorination.

Abstract:Ru-based catalysts have emerged as promising alternatives to HgCl2 in vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) production by acetylene hydrochlorination. However, poor C2H2 activation and the generation of key intermediates (*CH2═CH) have posed grand challenges for enhanced catalytic performances. Herein, we synthesized a Ni-intercalated Ru heterostructure using a lattice-strain engineering strategy, resulting in the desired electronic and chemical environments. The collaboration of Ni splits the adsorption centers of C2H2 and HCl by weakening the strong steric hindrance, and it also promotes the activation of the linear C≡C configurations. The well-controlled lattice strain enables strong d-d hybridization interactions between Ni and Ru, resulting in an upshift of the d-band center from -3.72 eV (for Ru/C) to -3.49 eV and electronic delocalization. This optimized local Ni-Ru/C structure thus enhances *H adsorption while weakening the energy barrier for generating *CH2═CH intermediates. Furthermore, the energy barrier for VCM formation was simultaneously reduced. Accordingly, the Ni-Ru/C heterostructures achieve improved performance in pilot-scale trials, with a conversion of >99.2% and stability for over 500 h. These performances significantly surpass most reported Ru-based moieties and the traditional Hg catalysts, offering a promising avenue for C2H2 activation in industrial applications.
Geometric and electronic effects on the performance of a bifunctional Ru2P catalyst in the hydrogenation and acceptorless dehydrogenation of N-heteroarenes

Abstract:The development of bifunctional catalysts for the efficient hydrogenation and acceptorless dehydrogenation of N-heterocycles is a challenge. In this study, Ru2P/AC effectively promoted reversible transformations between unsaturated and saturated N-heterocycles affording yields of 98% and 99%, respectively. Moreover, a remarkable enhancement in the reusability of Ru2P/AC was observed compared with other Ru-based catalysts. According to density functional theory calculations, the superior performance of Ru2P/AC was ascribed to specific synergistic factors, namely geometric and electronic effects induced by P. P greatly reduced the large Ru-Ru ensembles and finely modified the electronic structures, leading to a low reaction barrier and high desorption ability of the catalyst, further boosting the hydrogenation and acceptorless dehydrogenation processes.The P element is the decisive factor! Ru2P/AC allowed for efficient reversible transformations between unsaturated and saturated N-heterocycles. The P atom finely modified the geometric and electronic structures, leading to a balance between reaction and diffusion, and boosting the hydrogenation and dehydrogenation processes.
