Abstract:Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB), a biodegradable polymer, has been studied as a substitute for petroleum-based polymers used for barrier coating to improve the barrier and mechanical properties of paper. In this study, ethyl cellulose (EC), a cellulose derivative, was used to prepare a polymer blend for enhancing the barrier properties of PHB. The prepared PHB/EC blend was then applied as a paper coating material. Additionally, the barrier and mechanical properties of the PHB/EC blend-coated paper based on the PHB/EC mixing ratio and coating weight were analyzed. The results showed that the EC could act as a binder for the PHB/EC blend-coated paper. Consequently, the PHB/EC blend-coated paper exhibited significant improvements in mechanical and barrier properties, including a substantial increase of over 100% in internal bond strength, more than 20% in tensile strength, exceeding 60% enhancement in water resistance, and a remarkable increase of over 90% in air permeability.

Abstract:The growing interest in paper-based materials for packaging is driven by their renewable and eco-friendly characteristics. However, their poor barrier performance against water, oil, and gas limits their application in the food packaging industry. In this study, we developed a simple dual-layer coating method to create water- and oil-repellent, gas barrier, antioxidant, and antibacterial paper-based materials using naturally-derived materials, including chitosan (CS), ethyl cellulose (EC), and cascade biorefinery products from green walnut husk (GWHE and CNC). The bottom CS/CNC oil-resistant coating and the top EC/GWHE water-resistant coating were applied to the paper surface. The synergistic effect of these coatings enhances the gas barrier and imparts functional properties to the paper. Compared to uncoated paper, the dual-layer-coated paper demonstrated a 239.1 % increase in tensile index, a higher kit rating value of 12/12, a lower Cobb 60 value of 3.21 mg/m2, a 44.0 % decrease in water vapor permeability (WVP), and a 90.7 % reduction in air permeability (AP). Additionally, this coated paper exhibited good antioxidant and antibacterial properties and favorable biodegradability. This study provides novel insights into the valorization of GWH waste and presents a sustainable strategy for producing high-performance paper-based materials for food packaging applications.
Improving the Barrier Properties of Packaging Paper by Polyvinyl Alcohol Based Polymer Coating—Effect of the Base Paper and Nanoclay

Abstract:The poor barrier properties and hygroscopic nature of cellulosic paper impede the wide application of cellulosic paper as a packaging material. Herein, a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based polymer coating was used to improve the barrier performance of paper through its good ability to form a film. Alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) was used to enhance the water resistance. The effect of the absorptive characteristics of the base paper on the barrier properties was explored, and it was shown that surface-sized base paper provides a better barrier performance than unsized base paper. Nanoclay (Cloisite Na+) was used in the coating formulation to further enhance the barrier performance. The results show that the coating of PVA/AKD/nanoclay dispersion noticeably improved the barrier performance of the paper. The water vapor transmission rate of the base paper was 533 g/m2·day, and it decreased sharply to 1.3 g/m2·day after the application of a double coating because of the complete coverage of the base paper by the PVA-based polymer coating. The coated paper had excellent water resistance owing to its high water contact angle of around 100°. The grease resistance and mechanical properties of the base paper also improved after coating. This work may provide inspiration for improving the barrier properties of packaging paper through the selection of a suitable base paper and coating formulation.

Abstract:Paper-based food packaging materials are widely used, renewable, and biodegradable. Because of its porous structure, paper has poor or no barrier performance against grease, water vapor, water, and volatile organic compounds. Moreover, recycled paperboard can be a source of organic residuals that are able to migrate into packed food. Two different types of paperboard produced from primary and secondary cellulosic fibers were coated using renewable materials, such as alginate and chitosan, and comprehensive barrier measurements showed multifunctional barrier properties of these two biomaterials. Both paper substrates were successfully coated using a draw-down coater, and the measured air permeability of the coated samples was 0 mL·min−1. Grease resistance was improved, while it was possible to reduce water vapor transmission, the migration of mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons and mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons (MOSH/MOAH), and the permeation of volatile compounds for both paper substrates when compared with uncoated substrates. Wettability and water absorptiveness of chitosan- and alginate-coated papers were found to be substrate-dependent properties, and could be significantly affected by bio-based coatings. In summary, industrially produced paperboard was upgraded by coating it with the naturally biodegradable biopolymers, alginate and chitosan, thus achieving extraordinary barrier performance for various applications within the packaging industry.

Biodegradable active coating from chitosan/astaxanthin crosslinked with genipin to improve water resistance, moisture and oxygen barrier and mechanical properties of Kraft paper

Abstract:An active chitosan-based coating with an addition of a natural antioxidant and a natural crosslinker has been applied to improve the performance of Kraft paper. Coatings, including chitosan (CS), CS crosslinked with 1.5 % genipin (CS-1.5G), CS containing 1 % astaxanthin (CSA) and CSA crosslinked with 1 % genipin (CSA-1G) were coated on Kraft paper. Uncoated and coated papers were then evaluated for water content (WC), water vapor permeability (WVP), contact angle, oxygen permeability (OP), tensile strength (TS), bursting strength and elongation at break (EAB). Results indicated that the coating improved the properties of Kraft paper. When compared with CS-coated paper, WC and WVP of CSA-1G-coated paper decreased significantly by 40 % and 24 %, respectively. The lowest OP was also observed in CSA-1G-coated paper. CSA- and CSA-1G-coated paper had contact angle values >100°, indicating hydrophobic nature of coated paper surface. All coatings largely improved TS of the paper (by 182-224 %) whereas CS-1.5G and CSA-1G significantly improved the bursting strength of the paper. The developed genipin-crosslinked chitosan-based coating enriched with astaxanthin can improve the functional properties of Kraft paper and thus will facilitate the usage of the paper for food packaging applications.
Cellulose nanocrystal‐modified bio‐based aqueous polyurethane coating agent for kraft paper packaging

Abstract:In this study, bio‐based aqueous polyurethanes modified with composite hydrophilic units were prepared by the self‐emulsification method and modified with modified cellulose nanocrystals, which were applied to the surface coating of kraft paper in order to improve the mechanical and waterproof properties of kraft paper and to expand its application in the field of disposable food packaging. With the implementation of the "plastic restriction order" and the demand for sustainable society development, biodegradable coatings derived from biomass materials have garnered significant interest. This study presents the synthesis of a double‐salt bio‐based waterborne polyurethane (PLA‐WPU) by utilizing poly(lactic acid) polyol (PLA) and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) as the main raw materials, along with 2,2‐dihydroxymethylpropionic acid (DMPA) and sodium ethylenediamine ethanesulfonate (A‐95) as a hydrophilic chain extender. Synergistic reinforcement of PLA‐WPU using hydrophobically modified cellulose nanocrystals (M‐CNC) and polycarbonate diimide (PDCDA). At an M‐CNC content of 3% relative to the effective mass of PLA‐WPU, the tensile strength reached 36.12 MPa. After 8 days a lipase PBS solution, the degradation rate reached 54%. Excellent waterproof performance was observed, exhibiting a contact angle of 143.5°. When applied as a surface coating on kraft paper, the Cobb 60 value decreased from 74.0 to 28.6 g/m2, while increasing the tensile strength by 451.3%. Importantly, the kraft paper maintained excellent waterproofing, mechanical strength, and high barrier properties even after repeated folding, high and low‐temperature conditions, and exposure to varying pH solutions. It proved to be both degradable and recyclable, making it a promising alternative to liner paper or plastic membrane, especially in food packaging.

Abstract:Paper-based packaging materials have attracted much attention due to their biodegradability, non-toxicity and renewability. However, traditional paper with poor water- and oil-repellency limits its application in food packaging. In this study, the traditional paper coated with cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) and a mixture of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) & CNF microparticles (CNFmp) became a hydrophobic and oleophobic paper-based material. The layer of CNF coated on paper can fill the porous on surface to improve the barrier, and the hydrophilicity of this layer contributed to resistance to oil. The coatings of PDMS@CNFmp provided the paper with good hydrophobicity. The effects of CNF concentration, coated thickness, and the second layer of PDMS@CNFmp on thermal stability, mechanical properties, water- and oil-resistance, and air barrier of the paper were investigated. When the concentration of CNF suspension for coating reached 2 wt%, the CNF layer's thickness was 16 μm and the coatings' thickness was 18 μm, the paper exhibited excellent tensile strength (35.02 ± 2 MPa), high hydrophobicity (WCA of 141° ± 3.2°), oil-resistance (91.8° ± 1.9°, kit rating 12/12) and gas barrier (1.38 ± 0.2 mL/min). The present work has great potential for preparing high barrier, fluorine-free, and water- and oil-resistant materials in the food packaging field.

Abstract:Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) comprise a family of biodegradable aliphatic polyesters with enhanced sustainable profile and high water vapor barrier. As environmentally friendly materials, nanostructured cellulose-based films, also called nanopapers, such as films made of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) and lignocellulose nanofibrils (LCNFs), are also of growing interest due to their high mechanical strength and outstanding oxygen barrier properties at dry conditions. Unfortunately, nanopapers are highly hydrophilic, lacking of sufficient moisture resistance for uses in, for instance, food packaging. The present study reports, for the first time, on the effect of electrospun poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) double side coatings on the morphology, water contact angle, mechanical properties, and barrier performance of CNF and LCNF films. The resultant multilayer structures showed significantly improved water contact resistance, more balanced mechanical properties, and higher barrier performance against water vapor in comparison to the neat nanopapers. Although the PHA-coated nanopapers presented slightly lower aroma barrier due to the intrinsic affinity of PHA for limonene uptake, these sustainable multilayer films further improved the oxygen performance of the nanopapers, showing significant potential as barrier materials even at high humidity conditions. As a result, the here-developed novel films, based on nanopapers double side coated with electrospun PHB and PHBV layers, appear as a very promising fully bio-based material concept for food packaging applications due to their outstanding water vapor and oxygen barrier performance.

Abstract:Scientific Societies at both a local and international level are making big effort to prepare their clinical practice guidelines. The Italian Society of Nephrology has already published in two previous editions a series of guidelines relating to various aspects of management and diagnosis of different renal diseases. In this review we present the criteria of the 3(rd) edition of the Italian Society of Nephrology guidelines. This 3(rd) edition of guidelines will be based on the availability of scientific evidence in different areas of nephrology, dialysis and transplantation. Ten key intervention questions have been identified, based on the availability of systematic reviews of randomized trials or individual randomized address them. Systematic reviews and randomized trials are the optimal study design to address intervention questions. These have been summarized based upon rigid methodological criteria and strictly reflect the evidence basis. The different phases of development and publication of the 3(rd) edition of the Italian Society of Nephrology guidelines are presented.
Preparation of high‐barrier performance paper‐based materials from biomass‐based silicone‐modified acrylic polymer emulsion

Abstract:Biomass ‐based Polymer‐Silicone Propylene Emulsion Coated Paper: Microscopic Modeling and Barrier Mechansim Diagrams. High‐barrier performance, especially under extreme working conditions, is the key to replacing other types of packaging materials with paper‐based materials. In this paper, two biomass‐based polymers, sodium alginate (SA), and chitosan, were used to form a barrier coating with silicone emulsions to prepare a high‐performance paper‐based barrier material. By double coating, the water and oilproof functions were superimposed. The two prepared coated papers were characterized by infrared spectroscopy analysis, contact angle test, and scanning electron microscopy analysis, while their water resistance, oil resistance, thermal oil resistance, and thermal stability were tested. The water and oil repellency were achieved by double coating. The Cobb value of the chitosan‐silicone emulsion‐coated paper reached 5.3 g/m2, with a Kit grade of Level 12, and could block the penetration of castor oil at 80°C within 24 h. The Cobb value of the sodium alginate‐silicone emulsion‐coated paper was 41.6 g/m2, much higher than that of the uncoated paper, with a Kit grade of up to Level 10, which could slow down the rate of castor oil penetration at 80°C within 24 h. The test results showed that there was no chemical reaction between the paper‐based coatings, and the coated paper surface had good film formation, while the double coating method increased the thermal decomposition temperature of the overall barrier coating, effectively improving the thermal stability of the coating and achieving high‐barrier performance at lower cost and under extreme working conditions. Abstract:Polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) can be used as a barrier film against gases such as oxygen because of its dense thin-film structure formed by hydrogen bonding; however, its poor water/moisture resistance and low water vapor barrier properties limit its application in food packaging. Herein, oxalic acid-modified PVA(POA) was prepared and crosslinked with Ca2+ to develop a PVA coating solution with improved water resistance for application on paper-based food packaging materials. The crosslinking reaction to improve the water resistance of conventional PVA requires a long reaction time, and preparing a coating solution with crosslinked PVA is virtually impossible. However, the newly developed PVA coating solution may be suitable for the paper-coating industry because crosslinking proceeds simultaneously with drying after coating. Furthermore, in eco-friendly processes using water as a solvent, multilayer-coating is not possible with conventional PVA, whereas the developed coating is resistant to water-soluble processes through crosslinking and can be stacked on top of each other. The Ca2+-crosslinked POA layer exhibited excellent oxygen and water vapor barrier properties through an additional acrylic emulsion coating resulting in OTR and WVTR of 0.13 mL/m2·day and 0.82 g/m2·day. To evaluate recyclability of the coated paper, alkali dissociation and recyclability tests were conducted, and the results showed a repulpability rate of 99.7%, indicating that the paper pulp can be recycled. Biodegradability tests under lab-scale simulated industrial composting conditions showed 91.8% biodegradability, confirming eco-friendliness of the coated paper. Those multifunctional properties of the developed multicoated paper make it excellent additions to paper packaging, particularly for food packaging applications.

Abstract:Synthetic polymer coatings impact the biodegradable behavior of cellulosic packaging material. The environmental consequences of food packaging disposal have increased consumer concern. The present study aimed to use natural polymer coatings incorporating palmitic acid and activated carbon applied to paperboard surfaces as a sustainable alternative to improve cellulosic packaging material's moisture and fat barrier properties, minimizing the environmental impact. The coating formulation was defined using a Factorial Experimental Design with independent variables: chitosan, palmitic acid, activated carbon concentrations, and the number of coating layers. The highest concentration of chitosan (2.0% w/w) filled the pores of the cellulosic paperboard network, supporting the compounds incorporated into the filmogenic matrix and improving the fat resistance. The water vapor permeability of the coated paperboard material (range: 101 ± 43 to 221 ± 13 g·d−1·m−2) was influenced by the hydrophobicity effect of palmitic acid, the non-polar characteristic of activated carbon, and the number of applied layers. The coating formulation selected was a chitosan concentration of 2.0% (w/w), a palmitic acid concentration of 1.8% (w/w), an activated carbon concentration of 1.2% (w/w), and an application of three layers. The coating provides the potential for a paperboard surface application, improving the cellulosic packaging material's fat and moisture barrier properties and maintaining biodegradability and recyclability.

Abstract:Chitosan is a versatile biopolymer with many interesting functionalities. Its effects on the barrier and mechanical properties of single- or double-coated fibre-based packaging papers in dependence on the applied drying regime were successfully tested. Our investigations revealed chitosan to be a highly robust biopolymer, since the different drying regimes did not alter its contribution to the development of strength and barrier properties of the coated packaging papers. These properties showed a stronger influence of the applied coat weights than of the different drying regimes. The effect of chitosan coatings were quantified by measuring tensile strength (TS), burst strength (BS) and tensile energy absorption (TEA). These revealed that TS, BS and TEA of the coated papers increased significantly. Moreover, the chitosan-coated papers were less permeable against water vapor and air. High grease resistance was observed for double-coated papers, irrespective of the drying regimes. The coated paper surface showed a more hydrophilic character, resulting in lower contact angles and higher water absorption properties. In this study, industrially produced chitosan has been proven to be a renewable, robust biopolymer that can be utilized as an additive to increase strength and the barrier properties of fibre-based materials.

Study on the performance and application of coatings based on chitosan/gelatin/microbeads composite aerogel

Abstract:Chitosan, gelatin, and microbeads were prepared as aerogel, which was utilized as a functional material to create coatings. The antibacterial and freshness retention properties of the coatings were tested. Furthermore, the coating was applied to cardboard to test its hydrophobicity and thermal insulation properties. Plastic reduction regulations have resulted in the gradual replacement of traditional food plastic packaging materials with biodegradable and recyclable paper‐based ones. However, paper is prone to water absorption and moisture damage, and it has poor insulation properties, which can impact food quality and user experience. Recently, biopolymers have gained wide interest as the main substrate for paper coatings, providing various qualities for paper‐based materials to meet food packaging requirements. The coating based on chitosan/gelatin/microbeads composite aerogel prepared in this study not only possesses inherent antimicrobial and preservation properties but also enhances the cardboard's mechanical strength, hydrophobicity, and thermal insulation effect after coating on cardboard. When the coating thickness was 30 μm, the tensile strength of the cardboard was enhanced by 0.65 kN/m, the contact angle increased by 19.3°, and the thermal conductivity coefficient decreased by 0.024 W·m−1·K−1. Therefore, the biopolymer composite coating developed in this study provides an eco‐friendly substitute for plastic coatings on cardboard. In addition to bacteriostatic and preserving freshness, it can also address paper‐based material shortcomings, ensuring food quality and safety with comprehensive packaging protection.

Continuous Processing of Nanocellulose and Polylactic Acid into Multilayer Barrier Coatings

Abstract:Recent years have seen an increased interest toward utilizing biobased and biodegradable materials for barrier packaging applications. Most of the abovementioned materials usually have certain shortcomings that discourage their adoption as a preferred material of choice. Nanocellulose falls into such a category. It has excellent barrier against grease, mineral oils, and oxygen but poor tolerance against water vapor, which makes it unsuitable to be used at high humidity. In addition, nanocellulose suspensions' high viscosity and yield stress already at low solid content and poor adhesion to substrates create additional challenges for high-speed processing. Polylactic acid (PLA) is another potential candidate that has reasonably high tolerance against water vapor but rather a poor barrier against oxygen. The current work explores the possibility of combining both these materials into thin multilayer coatings onto a paperboard. A custom-built slot-die was used to coat either microfibrillated cellulose or cellulose nanocrystals onto a pigment-coated baseboard in a continuous process. These were subsequently coated with PLA using a pilot-scale extrusion coater. Low-density polyethylene was used as for reference extrusion coating. Cationic starch precoating and corona treatment improved the adhesion at nanocellulose/baseboard and nanocellulose/PLA interfaces, respectively. The water vapor transmission rate for nanocellulose + PLA coatings remained lower than that of the control PLA coating, even at a high relative humidity of 90% (38 °C). The multilayer coating had 98% lower oxygen transmission rate compared to just the PLA-coated baseboard, and the heptane vapor transmission rate reduced by 99% in comparison to the baseboard. The grease barrier for nanocellulose + PLA coatings increased 5-fold compared to nanocellulose alone and 2-fold compared to PLA alone. Abstract:Paper-based packaging is widely employed in industries ranging from food to beverages to pharmaceuticals because of its attractive advantages of biodegradability, recyclability, good strength, low cost, and lightweight. However, paper products usually have poor water barrier resistance properties because of paper and fibers porous microstructure. In this study, an ecofriendly water-resistant (hydrophobic) oil from biological origin, namely, palm kernel oil (PKO) was used to coat paper by using a facile and cost-effective dip-casting approach. PKO formulation was prepared by mixing with a solvent and furfuryl alcohol (FA). The water resistance, structural properties, and thermal and mechanical properties of the coated papers obtained under different processing conditions were reported and compared to understand the performance of coated paper. Contact angle (CA), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and thermal gravimetry (TGA) were used for analysis and characterization of coated papers. Data from contact angle measurements showed that the PKO formulation could considerably improve the liquid water barrier property of the paper, with a measured water contact angle (CA) of ∼120° and reduce the water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) by 22%. This novel, green, low-cost, and water-resistant paper coating made with biological and biodegradable oil is a potential candidate for replacing petroleum-based coatings used in a broad range of applications and will also be able to make an additional full use of the palm kernel oil.

Abstract:The use of plant oil-coated paper could provide a greener approach to develop packaging materials in contrast to reliance on synthetic polymer-coated paper such as that coated by nylon, polystyrene (PS), polyethylene (PE), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), polypropylene (PP), epoxy (commonly known as plastic), including plastic−paper hybrid materials. As described herein, we have successfully demonstrated the use of acrylated epoxidized soybean oil (AESO) for paper coating applications. It was found that the AESO-coated paper exhibited excellent oil and water resistance as reflected by kit rating (12/12) and Cobb 1800 (~2 g/m2) analysis. The coating steps include doctor-blade casting of AESO and 2 wt% of photoinitiator (2-hydroxy-2-methylpropiophenone) onto paper substrates followed by UV curing that yields highly crosslinked polymeric coating on the surface of paper. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) data confirms the crosslinking of AESO monomers, where the CC stretching frequency (~1638 and 809 cm−1) disappears after UV treatment. Mechanical property measurements show retention of >80 % in tensile index in the coated sample as compared to the uncoated paper. Further analysis such as ring crush test, bending stiffness, and internal tearing resistance measurements demonstrate that AESO-coated paper offers a significant improvement over the uncoated paper in terms of mechanical stability. Thermogravimetric analysis indicates that the crosslinked AESO-matrix is stable even at an elevated temperature (~340 °C), which demonstrates the stability of this polymeric material on paper substrates, thus increasing its utility in food packaging by mitigating the risk of the coating material leaching into food at high temperatures.

Abstract:The demand for paper-based packaging solutions as an alternative to incumbent single-use petroleum-based polymers for food packaging applications is ever-increasing. Paper-based packaging enables direct options for recycling and, in the case of inadvertent leakage, avoids the formation of microplastics through natural biodegradation. However, typical paper-based formats do not offer sufficient barrier performance which meets these sustainability objectives. Replacement of the plastic film with paper formats will reduce product shelf-stability and increase food wastage from farm to table. This work employed enzymatically polymerized microcrystalline glucan (MCG) as a functional additive in natural rubber (NR)-based coating formulations. Typically, NR coating formulations containing 0–50 wt % MCG were fabricated at a constant coating thickness with a constant solid content. The influence of the MCG on the wet and dry strength, rheology, adhesion strength, and barrier properties such as moisture, oxygen, and grease barrier of the formulated coatings was investigated. Also, further study on the effect of solid content and light crosslinking on the barrier properties was conducted. The optimized NR/MCG coating displayed promising mechanical properties as well as oxygen and oil barrier properties. Furthermore, light crosslinking of the NR/MCG coating enhances the barrier properties of the paper coating. Overall, the formulated NR/MCG paper coatings exhibited excellent wet strength in conjuncture with outstanding barrier properties, indicating their potential as a sustainable alternative in the food packaging industry.

Abstract:Paper-based packaging materials have drawn increased attention under the rising awareness of environmental issues, whereas the barrier properties of paper are inadequate for food packaging. This study aimed to improve the barrier properties of paper by multi-coating method. Chitosan was coated as the first layer primarily to improve the oil resistance of the paper, whereas hydrophobic modified nanocellulose was applied as the second layer to render the paper water-repellent as well as to further enhance its oil resistance. Finally, zein was coated as the third layer to achieve the heat-sealing property of paper, and further enhance the water and oil resistance of paper. The obtained triple-layer paper had a high kit number of 12 and a low Cobb 60 value of 2.6 g/m 2 , and exhibited heat-sealing ability without any adhesive agent, which has a peel strength of 372.6 N/m. The triple layers also effectively improved the mechanical properties, and decreased the moisture and oxygen permeability of the paper substrate. Moreover, the triple-layer paper possesses good antibacterial activity and cytocompatibility. This study may provide inspiration for improving the barrier properties of food packaging paper and endowing it with heat-sealing property.
