Abstract:To extend the lifetime of wall-paintings in the Mogao Grottoes, various kinds of conservation materials (for example, PVA, acrylic acid and B72) and techniques (for example, adhesion, consolidation and surface coating) have been used in the past decades. However, as a basic concern, it still remains obscured how the deterioration mechanism of wall-paintings changes after conservation materials are applied. In this contribution, an assumption was advanced to clarify this mechanism. Different layers in the wall-paintings have different physical properties, such as thermal and moisture expansions, which may be altered after the conservation materials penetrate into the paintings. The differences of these properties may cause stress between the layers in the paintings with the change of environmental factors, which will finally lead to deterioration of wall-paintings. A series of experiments were performed to determine thermal and moisture expansion properties of consolidated wall-painting plasters. The impact of the conservation materials on the expansion properties of wall-painting plasters was quantified, in order to evaluate these materials. Consistency of experimental conclusions and conservation experience validated this hypothetical mechanism.
The impact of cave opening and closure on murals hygrothermal behavior in Cave 98 of Mogao Caves, China

Abstract:The Mogao Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site, draws numerous tourists each year, yet the impact of their visitation and the cave accessibility on the cave's murals remains unclear. This study utilized a validated 2-D coupled heat and moisture transfer model to compare the hygrothermal fluctuations and deterioration risks of murals under three different cave opening states (completely closed, open without visitors, and open with visitors). The results indicate: (1) Opening the caves increases the annual mural temperature fluctuation but mitigates the annual RH fluctuation. (2) Opening the caves significantly increases the daily fluctuations of temperature and RH of the murals. (3) Compared to the impact of visitors, air exchange caused by opening the caves has a greater effect on the short-term fluctuation of mural's temperature and RH. (4) Opening the cave during the summer helps reduce the salt weathering risk. These findings are significant for the regulation of cave microenvironments and the formulation of cultural heritage conservation measures in China.

Abstract:In the past few decades, a series of research, restoration and protection have been performed on the ancient murals in Mogao Grottoes. These treatments played significant roles in the conservation of the elegant art in Dunhuang. But whether the protection and reinforcement are still active and which materials are more appropriate remain unknown. These issues are crucial for the conservation of murals. On-site investigation on the murals in Mogao Grottoes has been carried out. The purpose of this investigation is to examine the renewed diseases of the murals which have been repaired before. It will also provide useful information about the function of conservation materials and their degradation mechanism.
Effects of Rainfall Infiltration and Solar Radiation at Cliff Surface on Water and Salt Transport in the Wall of Cave 108 Mogao Grottos

Abstract:Based on the concept of hydro-thermo-mechanical-chemical coupled numerical simulation that is used in high-radioactive nuclear waste geodisposal, and a successful three-dimensional element division for the cave 108 of Mogao Grottos with irregular cliff surface, a coupled simulation for hydro-thermo-salt transport in the cave was conducted under variable rainfall and solar irradiance input boundary conditions. The results indicate that the capillarity from deep groundwater and the rainfall infiltration on the cliff surface are the main processes providing moisture to the cave, and the long term solar radiation on it is the heat sources of the cave. The rainfall infiltration and solar radiation work jointly, thus driving the moisture, heat, salt and vapor to flow from east to west side of the cave. As a result, the moisture and salt move towards the wall surface near the ground and the painting damage from salt accumulation occurs there. These results coincide with the fact that painting damage mainly are found at the near surface of the cave and with the observations of air temperature, humidity and pressure in the cave.

Abstract:The Mogao caves in Dunhuang are a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the inland desert region of China. Within this site, cave 285 is one of the most important caves. Because a great deal of deterioration has taken place within this cave, a large amount of research has been carried out on the environmental effects of these changes. Results show that the east wall has been least affected by moisture, solar radiation, and daylight compared to the other walls and ceiling. However, the effects of deterioration, including scratches, detachment, and discoloration, are nevertheless seen on the east wall. In this study, we investigated the effects of adhesion and the collision of windblown sand as factors contributing to the deterioration of the east wall. We conclude that sand blown by high-velocity wind has led to detachment, flaking, and losses to the east wall including fading of the paintings.

Concentrations, sources, and influential factors of water-soluble ions of atmospheric particles in Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes, a world heritage site in China

Abstract:Atmospheric particle pollution is one of the major factors leading to degradation of ancient wall paintings, particularly heritage sites in arid and semi-arid regions. However, current systematic research on the changes, sources, and influential factors of atmospheric particulate matter and its water-soluble ion concentrations is not sufficient. Thus, the major water-soluble ion concentrations, sources, and influential factors of atmospheric particles PM 2.5 and PM 10 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic equivalent diameter ≤2.5 and 10.0 μm, respectively, in ambient air) were collected from Cave 16 and its ambient exterior environment in the Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes, China, between April 2015 and March 2016. Results showed that the concentrations of PM 2.5 and PM 10 inside and outside the cave were the highest in March 2016 and the lowest in December 2015. The higher particle concentration from March to May was related to the frequent occurrence of sand and dust events, and the lower particle concentration from June to September was associated with good diffusion conditions, increased precipitation, and an established cave shelterbelt. The concentration of particulate matter inside the cave was affected by the concentration of particles in the air outside the cave. Ca 2+ , NH 4 + , Na + , Cl − , and SO 4 2− were the main components of the total ions of PM 2.5 and PM 10 both inside and outside the cave. The total ions inside the cave were frequently affected by the disturbance of tourists' activities during the peak tourist season from May to August. Under the influence of dust, the total concentrations of Cl − , SO 4 2− , Na + , NH 4 + , and Ca 2+ in particles of different sizes inside and outside the cave increased, and the concentrations of Cl − , SO 4 2− , Na + , and Ca 2+ decreased during precipitation period. Backward air mass trajectory analysis suggested that the pollutants were mainly from Xinjiang, China. The pollutant sources of air particulates are straw burning, secondary pollution sources, soil dust, dry spring rivers, and tourist activities.

Abstract:Cultural heritage is directly affected by the conservation environment, and climate change is already having an impact on the conservation of cultural heritage. The Mogao Caves murals, one of China's most prestigious cultural heritages, have been affected by extreme rainfall. The aim of this study was therefore to assess the impact of abnormal weather on the microenvironment within the caves and on the preservation of the murals. First, the 30-year meteorological data of the Dunhuang area and the one-year cycle of Cave 285's monitoring data are collated. The results show that for Cave 285, summer is the most noteworthy period. Then, a heat and moisture transfer model is established, and the accuracy of the model is verified. Finally, the model is used to evaluate the effect of different abnormal weather factors on the hygrothermal environment in the cave. The simulation results indicate that for Cave 285, abnormally high temperatures in summer do not make the situation worse, but both abnormally low temperatures and abnormally high humidity can cause the relative humidity in the cave to exceed safety critical value. In particular, when high humidity persists for a week, the relative humidity inside the cave can exceed 80% and take about 4 days to fall back to a safe value. In such cases, dehumidification measures are recommended.
Temporal variation of wall flow and its influences on energy balance of the building wall

Abstract:The characteristics of energy balance and heat transfer on building walls are important for building energy consumption and outdoor thermal/wind environment. The in-situ measurement of energy balance and wall flows during clear days on a 16-story building in Guangzhou, China is introduced and analyzed in this paper. The velocity along the wall was measured by 3D ultrasonic anemometers. The surface temperature was measured by infrared camera and thermal couples. The ambient temperature, relative humidity, wind velocity and solar radiation were recorded by weather stations. The Rayleigh number of wall flows reached as high as 1.44 × 10 14 . We found that the different kinds of heat flux reach their maximum value in a day cycle at different times. The transmittance of the atmosphere keeps decreasing from sunrise to sunset on Guangzhou’s typical clear days thus inducing different incoming solar radiation. The wall surface temperature and air flow were visualized by infrared videos. The diurnal change of energy balance on the south facing wall was calculated based on the solar radiation, long wave radiation and heat transfer caused by natural convection adjacent to the wall.
Investigation into rock moisture and salinity regimes: implications of sandstone weathering in Yungang Grottoes, China

Abstract:Yungang Grottoes in north of China are the classical masterpieces of Chinese Buddhists, dating from the Northern Wei Dynasty 1,500 years ago. This rock art is threatened by weathering processes that has been accelerated due to coal mining. The dominant weathering processes occurring on the rock surface are collapse, flaking, and efflorescence. Salt crystal growth plays a major cause of these deteriorations, and it has a close relationship with water movement. The major salt on the rock surface are sulfates, with a primary composition of epsomite, thenardite, and gypsum. In addition, carbonate minerals are found, mostly calcite and nesquehonite. In this paper, three grottoes in the eastern part have been investigated via measuring the rock surface moisture and recording the surface temperature and humidity. These nondestructive techniques are used for the first time in China on cultural relics. The movement of moisture has been calculated and mapped, and then analyzed for its relationship with the weathering process. Three main sources of water transport in the sandstone are adopted to explain the moisture content patterns. The aim of this study is to help rock art conservation in Yungang Grottoes, thus to provide a better understanding regarding the driving processes of internal moisture transport, which results in significant weathering processes. The evidence shows that the natural character of sandstone, water transport mechanism, and continental semi-arid conditions are the major causes of rock deterioration. Meanwhile, air pollution due to coal mining is also an important factor in driving the weathering process.

Abstract:Yungang Grottoes, in Datong City of Shanxi Province, China, as the state-level key cultural relic preservation organ, have been subjected to severe degradation due to natural and human factors over the years. Since January 2010, site investigation and research on Yungang Grottoes, assisted by the Xi’an Relics Protection Center and Yungang Grottoes Cultural Research Institute, have been carried out in the laboratory of cultural relics conservation materials in Zhejiang University. Our investigation of the deterioration characteristics of these grottoes is presented here. The paper describes about 12 types of diseases in detail represented by dust deposit, salt crystallization and black crust. Relevant samples have been collected and analyzed by means of SEM, FT-IR, XRD and EDAX to study the potential hazard to the sandstones and conservation methods, which could be used to help guide remediation efforts directed at reducing the weathering problem.
Capillary rise induced salt deterioration on ancient wall paintings at the Mogao Grottoes

Abstract:Salt deterioration has been found to be a major threat to wall paintings at culture heritage sites in arid areas along the Silk Road. However, the routes of water migration that cause the efflorescence have not been identified, and consequently, effective preservation measures have not been developed. Our microanalysis, by interrogating 93,727 individual particles collected in a Mogao cave in Dunhuang, China, revealed that capillary rise of water in the earthen plasters drives the deterioration of wall paintings. The vertical distribution of chloride and sulfate particles in the salt efflorescence and their morphologies implied a migration of salts through capillary rise and subsequent crystal growth under environmental conditions exerts sufficient pressure to cause surface decay and loss. These results indicate that blocking the water capillary rise under the porous structures is likely the most effective route to prevent rapid deterioration of the ancient wall paintings. These salt transport and deterioration mechanisms in an arid environment, suggests that a wide range of management strategies and protective measures could be developed to effectively preserve heritage sites in arid regions, especially along the Silk Road.
The biodeterioration outbreak in Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes analyzed for the microbial communities and the occurrence time by C-14 dating

Abstract:Mogao Grottoes, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site since 1987, suffers from microbial colonization and deterioration of the wall paintings with the visible appearance of black spots and microbial biomasses in selected caves. In this study, next-generation sequencing (NGS) and microscopy analyses were combined to reveal the microbial community composition responsible for the biodeterioration. Results of scanning electron microscope (SEM), fluorescence microscopy, and polarizing microscopy showed that the existing microbial hyphae related to biodeteriorations were inviable. The dominant bacteria included Rhodococcus and Ralstonia , while Aspergillus species were the predominant fungi in samples of the black spots and microbial biomasses. In addition, radioactive 14 C dating was applied to determine the possible infestation time of the fungal outbreak based on Bayesian chronological modeling. The original mural was most likely painted in the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms (939–942 ca. AD), while the repainting time of the mural was most probable during the Song Dynasty (1002–1014 ca. AD), and the microbial biomasses were most likely formed in this historical period. With monitoring locations closer to the cliff, the higher bacterial diversity and lower fungal diversity detected were correlated with the higher relative humidity. Since the temperature and relative humidity are generally low in this area, being unsuitable for microbial growth presently or in the normal time of the past, either earthen plaster preparation before painting or heavy rainfall events combined with a leaky roof were most likely the initiators of the outbreak of the indigenous microbes on the wall paintings. This study provides useful evidence concerning the microbial community and the timing of microbial outbreak events on ancient wall paintings in such extremely arid climate conditions.

Abstract:Some of the largest and best-preserved Buddhist art treasure houses in the world, namely the Mogao Grottoes, are located at the northwest edge of the region of the Qinghai-Tibet plateau and are adjacent to the Altun and Qilian mountains, where the geotectonic activity is intense and large earthquakes have occurred. Future earthquakes are one of the major threats to the caves of the Mogao Grottoes; therefore, it is important that their dynamic performance is studied when an earthquake occurs. To understand the dynamic performance of the densely distributed caves under the effect of earthquakes, as well as the long-term stability of the Mogao Grottoes, the stress distribution, deformation characteristics, and peak-acceleration amplification factor were analysed under rare-earthquake conditions using a finite-difference element. The numerical study revealed that the most dangerous state of the caves is the initial time when an earthquake occurs. The obvious tensile stress concentration appeared at the top and the bottom of the caves of the middle floor; the main damage was caused by the shear failure towards the direction of the free face and not by the tensile failure. A large permanent horizontal displacement of the caves occurred after an earthquake, mostly at the densely distributed caves of the middle floor. The acceleration amplification effect of the middle-floor caves was significant; the Fourier amplitudes of the acceleration (which were monitored in all caves) were significantly magnified at the frequencies of 3 ~ 4 Hz and 7 ~ 9 Hz, whereas the Fourier amplitudes of the acceleration which were monitored in the middle-floor caves were almost amplified within the entire frequency range. Although the maximum stress was within the allowed limit and no tensile failure occurred, great permanent inhomogeneous horizontal displacements and large accelerations could have a negative effect on the stability of caves and the preservation of wall paintings. Moreover, it was assumed that the calculation results could serve as a type of guidance and as advice on the preventive protection of the Mogao Grottoes.

Abstract:Frequent fluctuations in microclimate inevitably cause serious irreversible damage to cultural heritage (such as high risks of cracking, flaking, salt efflorescence, swelling, disaggregation, surface layer detachment, and even microbe diseases). For the caves closed to the visitors, specifying a more rational schedule to minimize human influences on the microclimate is urgent and significant for daily maintenance of the Mogao Grottoes. Interior microclimate fluctuations are caused by air convection between the inside and outside environments, which is highly related to internal and external microclimate differences. Therefore, the occurrence times of the extreme values of temperature (T), relative humidity (RH), T difference (inside T minus outside T), and RH difference (inside RH minus outside RH) between the inside and outside environments of Cave 87 were analysed. The results indicated that the times of the extreme T/RH and T/RH differences showed obvious seasonal characteristics. From April to September, both the daily minimum T and RH differences mainly occurred from 8 am ~ 11 am, and the maximum differences were observed from 16 pm ~ 21 pm. This indicates that door openings for daily investigation and maintenance should be arranged in the morning rather than in the afternoon. The times of the daily extreme T and RH differences occurred from 16 pm ~ 19 pm (minimum) and 8 am ~ 11 am (maximum) from January ~ March and October ~ December, and the door opening time should be accordingly optimized. The analysis results provide more reasonable and specific door opening times for Cave 87 and a scientific reference for preventive conservation of the Mogao Grottoes.

Temporal Variation of Airborne Dust Concentrations in the Mogao Grottoes, Dunhuang, China

Abstract:Dust storms bring a large quantity of dust aerosols from arid and semi-arid regions of the Earth. However, real-time dust concentration data for dust storms in arid regions, important for wind erosion studies, are still limited. Here, temporal variation of airborne dust concentrations in the Mogao Grottoes, Northwest China, during the monitoring period from February to October 2012 and typical dust storms under different wind directions were analyzed. Results reveal that the monthly mean total suspended particle (TSP), particulate matter less than 10 μm (PM10), and particulate matter less than 2.5 μm (PM2.5) concentrations gradually decreased from February to October. The daily mean dust concentrations fluctuated with the day, with extreme values occurring mainly on February, March, and April. The daily mean PM10/TSP ratio ranged from 0.67 to 0.98 (mean of 0.82), and the PM2.5/PM10 ratio ranged from 0.31 to 0.73 (mean of 0.55), indicating PM10 dominated in TSP. In typical dust storms, the maximum real-time concentrations can reach 16, 000–21, 000 μg TSP m −3 , ∼11, 000 μg PM10 m −3 , and 3000–3500 μg PM2.5 m −3 , and extreme real-time dust concentrations of 50358.03 μg TSP m −3 , 33100.86 μg PM10 m −3 , and 7502.59 μg PM2.5 m −3 were recorded. Coincidence of the dry climate and windy season and sufficient dust sources in the surrounding environment contributed to the high dust concentrations in the Mogao Grottoes. To achieve the goal of minimizing the damage of falling dust to the murals and statues, establishing a dust storm early warning system and improving the existing sand control system are recommended.

Abstract:Silty sandstone grottoes are suffered climate changes. The Longyou Grottoes are typical argillaceous siltstone. This paper utilized the coupled humid-mechanical-damage model to investigate the influence of environmental humidity change on the deformation and stability of Cave 4 and Cave 5 in Longyou Grottoes. It is found that the change in environmental humidity significantly influences the stability of caves in Longyou Grottoes. The water saturation of surrounding rock changes with the increase or decrease of ambient humidity. The water swelling and dry shrinkage processes greatly affect the stress state and mechanical properties of the surrounding rock, resulting in micro-cracks which may form fractures that disturb the structural integrity and aggravate the geological hazard of weathering. The cave roof is the most dangerous position during the humidity variation. Pre-existing fissures act as shortcuts for humidity diffusion and stress generation. In turn, the fast diffusion rate and high stress cause further propagation of the fissures. Repairing pre-existing fissures and applying waterproof measurements on the inner wall of caves contributes to the stability and durability of the grottoes. This study improves the understanding of the relationship between the changes in environmental humidity and the weathering of grottoes and provides theoretical support for the subsequent disaster risk management and preservation of Longyou Grottoes.

Abstract:To systematically analyze the spatiotemporal heterogeneity, diurnal variation characteristics, and influencing factors of karst cave microclimate environments in Mahuang Cave, a cave in the Shuanghe Cave National Geological Park in Guizhou Province, China, was investigated. Monthly monitoring of meteorological and environmental parameters, such as wind speed, air pressure, humidity, and temperature indicators inside the cave and atmospheric temperature and precipitation outside the cave, was conducted from 2019 to 2021, as well as encrypted monitoring in August and December 2019. The results showed that: (1) The meteorological parameters of Mahuang Cave exhibited seasonal characteristics and cyclical interannual variation. Cave wind speed, relative humidity, and temperature were high in summer and autumn and lowest in winter, whereas cave air pressure was high in winter and low in summer. The atmospheric temperature outside the cave was the main controlling factor. (2) On a short time scale, the dewpoint and temperature of Mahuang Cave did not change significantly, and an abrupt change phenomenon occurred mostly around noon. The warm season was more sensitive than the cold season, and the closer to the entrance of the cave, the stronger the response. (3) In terms of spatial distribution, the overall microclimate factors of Mahuang Cave became increasingly stable and entered a constant state with the increasing depth of the cave passage. The related effects of cave morphology and structure, the physical environment of the cave passage, air movement, and groundwater dynamics were important factors leading to an abrupt change phenomenon in cave microclimates. Local meteorological conditions and cave geometry controlled the temporal variability and spatial heterogeneity of the cave microclimate environment.

Abstract:There is insufficient information on the movement of air in karst environments to constrain the uncertainty associated with quantifying sources and sinks of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) within caves for global carbon accounting. We analysed cave-air samples for their CO2 and CH4 concentrations ([CO2] and [CH4]) and carbon isotopic compositions from sampling campaigns in winter (August 2014) and summer (February 2015) at numerous heights and locations throughout Gaden and Cathedral caves, in a semi-arid environment, Wellington Caves, NSW, Australia. Ventilation is the dominant control on cave-air CO2 and CH4, with the highest cave-air CO2 concentrations ([CO2]cave) occurring in summer, in association with the lowest cave-air CH4 concentrations ([CH4]cave). Analyses show that the cave-air CO2 has both atmospheric and soil sources. Soil air and cave air in both caves undergo methanogenesis and methanotrophy, but we identify cave-specific differences in cave-air CH4 and CO2. [CH4]cave in Cathedral Cave shows an inverse relationship to [CO2]cave, particularly in areas separated from the main cave passage. In contrast, Gaden Cave has near-atmospheric [CH4]cave and isotopic ratios present at all locations sampled in winter. Where no ventilation is occurring in summer, [CH4]cave in Gaden Cave decreases, but remains reasonably high compared to Cathedral Cave. Our research shows adjacent caves vary in their ability to act as a net sink for CH4, and highlights the need for further studies before global generalisations can be made about the carbon budget of karst environments.

Abstract:Rapid CO 2 degassing and calcite precipitation driven by cave ventilation influence the speleothem δ 18 O and δ 13 C. However, the drivers of cave ventilation are not completely understood due to the lack of monitoring of multiple environmental factors. Furthermore, the understanding of isotope fractionation caused by the dissolution of speleothem in undersaturated drip water is limited during the cave air stagnation. In this study, we displayed four years of cave microenvironment monitoring in Shawan Cave, Southwestern China, and analyzed the δ 13 C DIC and δ 18 O of drip water, and calcite precipitation δ 18 O and δ 13 C. The results show that the ventilation process is attributed to buoyancy airflow between external atmosphere, fissure air, and cave air. This causes that the higher (lower) cave air p CO 2 in the summer (winter) is associated with upward airflow mode (downward airflow mode). Furthermore, cave ventilation could control the isotopic fractionation. Specifically, when cave air p CO 2 is lower, the carbon isotopic disequilibrium between calcite and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) is controlled by the degassing of CO 2 associated with calcite precipitation. The disequilibrium fractionation in carbon isotopes is less pronounced at slower drip-rate sites. The oxygen isotope fractionation between calcite and the drip water is found to be close to equilibrium. However, the high cave air p CO 2 (exceeding 10,000 ppm) may result in drip water undersaturation to drive the dissolution of speleothem calcite. The δ 18 O values of drip water are pulled away from their original values to disequilibrate to the calcite because the exchange time of oxygen in the dissolved carbonates with the oxygen in the water is sufficiently long. Hence, the dissolution of speleothems may be a new mechanism to explain the oxygen isotopic disequilibrium between the calcite and drip water during the cave air stagnation. The carbon isotope fractionation between calcite and drip water is close to equilibrium.

Abstract:The conservation of decorated caves is highly dependent on airflows in the karst network and through the surrounding host rock. Airflows are driven by the pressure gradient and influenced by the shape of the karst conduits and the permeability of the carbonate rock massif. Cosquer Cave is an Upper Paleolithic decorated cave, half submerged in a coastal karst, where conservation is also dependent on the cave's pools connected to the sea. Hydroclimatic data, such as air pressure and temperature and the water level inside and outside the cave, have been measured for several years to identify the main processes governing the water level variations, the airflows, and the air renewal. The data show unusual behavior for a karst: the karst air pressure is nearly always higher than the atmospheric pressure. As a result, the water level in the cave is below the sea level. The daily variations of the sea tide provide an assessment of the cave volume above the water level in the pools. Although the cave air is confined by the rock and the seawater, there are also external air inflows during short pressurization events connected with waves that can produce and force air bubbles to flow along submarine open fissures or karst conduits inside the massif. Moreover, the effective permeability of the carbonate rocks to air at the massif scale is inferred from the cave air pressure decrease over the summer season by applying Darcy's law in a partially saturated medium. Six years of data show that permeability varies from year to year and according to the cumulative rainfalls during the spring and summer. The driest years are correlated with a higher permeability, a faster air pressure decrease in the cave, and a faster rise in the pools' water level. In the future, in the context of climate change, a perturbation of the rock permeability is then expected in the near-surface caves, which will impact airflows in decorated caves and may alter their fragile hydroclimatic stability.
