Abstract:Although the electronic state of catalysts is strongly corrected with their oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performances, understanding the role of spin state in dynamic electronic structure evolution during OER process is still challenging. Herein, we developed a spin state regulation strategy to boost the OER performance of CoOOH through elemental doping (CoMOOH, M = V, Cr, Mn, Co and Cu). Experimental results including magnetic characterization, in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy, in situ Raman and density functional theory calculations unveil that Mn doping could successfully increase the Co sites from low spin state to intermediate spin state, leading to the largest lattice distortion and smallest energy gap between dxy and dz2 orbitals among the obtained CoMOOH electrocatalysts. Benefiting from the promoted electron transfer from dxy to dz2 orbital, facilitated formation of active high-valent *O-Co(IV) species at applied potential, and reduced energy barrier of rate-determining step, the CoMnOOH exhibits the highest OER performance. Our work provides significant insight into the correction between dynamic electronic structure evolution and OER performance by understanding the role of spin state regulation in metal oxyhydroxides, paving a new avenue for rational design of high-activity electrocatalysts.

Abstract:CuCo1.75Nd0.25S4/NF spinel catalyst with f‐d orbital coupling is designed by using lanthanide‐neodymium as the dopant to regulate spin configurations of cobalt cations and facilitate charge transport and adsorption kinetics during the oxygen evolution reaction. The spin states of active sites have a significant impact on the adsorption/desorption ability of the reaction intermediates during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Sulfide spinel is not generally considered a highly efficient OER catalyst owing to the low spin state of Co3+ and the lack of unpaired electrons available for adsorption of reaction intermediates. Herein, it is proposed a novel Nd‐evoked valence electronic adjustment strategy to engineer the spin state of Co ions. The unique f‐p‐d orbital electronic coupling effect stimulates the rearrangement of Co d orbital electrons and increases the eg electron filling to achieve high‐spin state Co ions, which promotes charge transport by propagating a spin channel and generates a high number of active sites for intermediate adsorption. The optimized CuCo1.75Nd0.25S4 catalyst exhibits outstanding electrocatalytic properties with a low overpotential of 320 mV at 500 mA cm−2 and a 48 h stability at 300 mA cm−2. In situ synchrotron radiation infrared spectra confirm the quick accumulation of key *OOH and *O intermediates. This work deepens the comprehensive understanding of the relationship between OER activity and spin configurations of Co ions and offers a new design strategy for spinel compound catalysts.

Abstract:Co2+ occupation from tetrahedral to octahedral sites, which maintains its high activity and further improves the stability, is accomplished via Ga substitution in Co3O4. Efficient oxygen couples on adjacent Co3+ sites enable excellent oxygen evolution kinetics and durability. Cobalt (Co)‐based oxides show promising activity as precious metal‐free catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction in proton exchange membrane water electrolysis, but the dissolution of Co has limited the durability of Co3O4 at industrially relevant current densities. This work demonstrates that cation in an octahedral coordination environment accounts for the oxygen evolution activity. Using a mixed inverse‐normal phase spinel CoxGa(3‐x)O4 as a proof‐of‐concept example, the designed Co2+‐O‐Co3+ motifs in octahedral sites trigger oxygen evolution through a kinetically favorable radical coupling pathway. Furthermore, lattice oxygen exchange, a leading factor in catalyst structural degradation for normal Co3O4, is suppressed, as evidenced by isotopic labeling experiments and theoretical calculations. With the optimized catalyst, Co1.8Ga1.2O4, an overpotential of 310 mV at 10 mA cm−2 is reported, with stable operation at 200 mA cm−2 for 200 h in a three‐electrode setup, and a proton exchange membrane electrolyzer operating at 200 mA cm−2 for 450 h.

Abstract:Co-based spinel oxides with unique crystal structures have been identified as a class of promising candidates for alkaline water oxidation catalysis in oxide structural families. Unfortunately, the relatively poor conductivity exerts significant negative impacts on efficient charge transfer, thereby inhibiting the enhancement of its intrinsic activity for electrochemical water splitting. Optimizing electronic structure of the catalytically active sites of Co-based spinel oxide electrocatalysts is of great significance for improving the electrocatalytic performance. Herein, a facile heterometal doping strategy is reported to synthesize oxygen-vacancy-rich Ru-doped Co 3 O 4 nanosheet array on cobalt foam substrate (denoted as Ru-Co 3 O 4 |V O /CF) as a trifunctional catalyst for significantly boosting the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR) electrocatalytic activities, which involves electrodeposition process, cation exchange approach, and subsequent thermal oxidation treatment. Benefiting from 3D hierarchically structural merits and more exposed active sites caused by local Jahn-Tell distortions, the optimized catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic performance towards HER and OER, affording a current density of 100 mA·cm -2 at low overpotentials of 48.6 and 270 mV in 1 M KOH, respectively, along with remarkable stability and durability. Interestingly, the integrated Ru-Co 3 O 4 |V O /CF water electroly only requires a low cell voltage of 1.47 V to reach 10 mA·cm -2 , outperforming the benchmark couple of Pt/C(-)||RuO 2 (+) electrode and most reported counterparts. More impressively, hydrazine-assisted water electrolysis electrolyzer is subsequently assembled by using Ru-Co 3 O 4 |V O /CF electrodes, delivering a current density of 100 mA·cm -2 with an ultralow operating voltage of 0.70 V, which is 1.1 V lower than that of hydrazine free counterpart. Density functional theory results reveal that the synergistic effect of Ru doping and oxygen vacancy could effectively modify the spin configuration (eg orbital occupancy), tune the d‐band center of Co ions and optimize the Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption and the adsorption energy of OER intermediates, consequently resulting in the enhancement of intrinsic catalytic activity of Co 3 O 4 . This work provides important referential value for fabricating highly efficient and stable catalysts towards sustainable energy conversion and storage.

Abstract:Spin state is often regarded as the crucial valve to release the reactivity of energy-related catalysts, yet it is also challenging to precisely manipulate, especially for the active center ions occupied at the specific geometric sites. Herein, a π-π type orbital coupling of 3d (Co)-2p (O)-4f (Ce) was employed to regulate the spin state of octahedral cobalt sites (CoOh) in the composite of Co3O4/CeO2. More specifically, the equivalent high-spin ratio of CoOh can reach to 54.7% via tuning the CeO2 content, thereby triggering the average eg filling (1.094) close to the theoretical optimum value. The corresponding catalyst exhibits a superior water oxidation performance with an overpotential of 251 mV at 10 mA cm-2, rivaling most cobalt-based oxides state-of-the-art. The π-π type coupling corroborated by the matched energy levels between Ce t1u/t2u-O and CoOh t2g-O π type bond in the calculated crystal orbital Hamilton population and partial density of states profiles, stimulates a π-donation between O 2p and π-symmetric Ce 4fyz2 orbital, consequently facilitating the electrons hopping from t2g to eg orbital of CoOh. This work offers an in-depth insight into understanding the 4f and 3d orbital coupling for spin state optimization in composite oxides.

Abstract:Octahedral coordinated trivalent cobalt cations (CoOh3+) in metal oxyhydroxides are highly active catalytic sites for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), a critical bottleneck for efficient water splitting; however, previous synthetic methods have limited control over these sites. Herein, a scalable electrodeposition method coupled with in situ oxidation to produce amorphous Co–Fe–W trimetallic oxyhydroxides enriched with CoOh3+ is developed. X‐ray absorption, in operando spectroscopic analysis, and computational studies reveal that 72% of the Co atoms are present in CoOh3+ sites. Fe and W synergistically affect the electronic structure of Co and provide a favorable coordination environment. The Co–Fe–W oxyhydroxide exhibits superior OER catalytic performance with an impressive turnover frequency of 1.96 s−1 at an overpotential of 300 mV, a low Tafel slope of 32 mV dec−1, and small activation energy of 53 kJ mol−1 in alkaline electrolyte. The catalyst directly deposited on Ni foams can serve as a robust OER electrode in two‐electrode water electrolyzers; they deliver a current density of 100 mA cm−2 at a small overpotential of 234 mV in alkaline electrolyte with excellent durability under 100 mA cm−2 over 120 h. These catalysts are excellent for practical water splitting applications.

Highly Active Surface Structure In Nanosized Spinel Cobalt-Based Oxides For Electrocatalytic Water Splitting

Abstract:Spinel cobalt-based oxides are a promising family of materials for water splitting to replace currently used noble-metal catalysts. Identifying the highly active facet and the corresponding coordinated structure of surface redox centers is pivotal for the rational design of low-cost and efficient nanosized catalysts. Using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and advanced X-ray techniques, as well as ab initio modeling, we found that the activity of Co3+ ions exhibits the surface dependence owing to the variability of its electronic configurations. Our calculation shows that the Co3+ site in {100} facet of nanosized Li2Co2O4 exhibits an impressive intrinsic activity with low overpotential, far lower than that of the {110} and {111} facets. The unique, well-defined CoO5 square-pyramidal structure in this nonpolar surface stabilizes the unusual intermediate-spin states of the Co3+ ion. Specially, we unraveled that oxygen ion anticipates the redox process via the strong hybridization Co 3d-O 2p state, which produces a 3d(z)(21.1) filling orbit. Finally, a spin-correlated energy diagram as a function of Co-O distance was devised, showing that the covalency of Co-O significantly affects the spin state of Co3+ ions. We suggest that the nonpolar surface that contains CoO5 units in the edge-sharing systems with the short Co-O bond distance is a potential candidate for alkaline water electrolysis.
Ru Single Atoms Integrated into Cobalt Oxide Spinel Structure with Interstitial Carbon for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation

Abstract:The mechanism behind the synergistic effect of hybridization between noble metal and non‐noble metal oxide supports is not yet clear. Here them first demonstrated that the introduction of interstitial C can effectively enhance the stability and activity of Co3O4 by controlling the evaporation and combustion of C in air. The Ru0.27Co2.73O4 electrocatalyst shows extremely high mass activity and significantly improve the corrosion resistance of acidic oxygen evolution reaction. Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a critical role in energy conversion technologies. Significant progress has been made in alkaline conditions. In contrast, it remains a challenge to develop stable OER electrocatalysts in acidic conditions. Herein, a new strategy is reported to stabilize single atoms integrated into cobalt oxide spinel structure with interstitial carbon (Ru0.27Co2.73O4), where the optimized Ru0.27Co2.73O4 exhibits a low overpotential of 265, 326, and 367 mV to reach a current density of 10, 50, and 100 mA cm2, respectively. More importantly, Ru0.27Co2.73O4 has long‐term stability of up to 100 h, representing one of the most stable OER electrocatalysts. X‐ray adsorption spectroscopy (XAS) characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations jointly demonstrate that the significant catalytic performance of Ru0.27Co2.73O4 is due to the synergistic effect between the Ru and Co sites and the bridging O ligands, as well as the significant reduction of the OER energy barrier. This work provides a new perspective for designing and constructing efficient non‐noble metal‐based electrocatalysts for water splitting.

Abstract:Developing highly active electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critical for the effectiveness of water splitting. Low-cost spinel oxides have attracted increasing interest as alternatives to noble metal-based OER catalysts. A rational design of spinel catalysts can be guided by studying the structural/elemental properties that determine the reaction mechanism and activity. Here, using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, it is found that the relative position of O p-band and MOh (Co and Ni in octahedron) d-band center in ZnCo2- x Nix O4 (x = 0-2) correlates with its stability as well as the possibility for lattice oxygen to participate in OER. Therefore, it is testified by synthesizing ZnCo2- x Nix O4 spinel oxides, investigating their OER performance and surface evolution. Stable ZnCo2- x Nix O4 (x = 0-0.4) follows adsorbate evolving mechanism under OER conditions. Lattice oxygen participates in the OER of metastable ZnCo2- x Nix O4 (x = 0.6, 0.8) which gives rise to continuously formed oxyhydroxide as surface-active species and consequently enhances activity. ZnCo1.2 Ni0.8 O4 exhibits performance superior to the benchmarked IrO2 . This work illuminates the design of highly active metastable spinel electrocatalysts through the prediction of the reaction mechanism and OER activity by determining the relative positions of the O p-band and the MOh d-band center.

Optimizing 3d spin polarization of CoOOH by in situ Mo doping for efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Abstract:Mo‐CoOOH is created by in situ construction of Mo‐doped CoOOH on the electrode under electro‐oxidation conditions. It displays an overpotential of 215 mV on nickel foam or 260 mV on glassy carbon at 10 mA cm‐2. Theoretical calculations show that Mo‐doped CoOOH optimizes the adsorption and electron conduction of oxygen‐related intermediates and lowers the oxygen evolution reaction overpotentials. Transition‐metal oxyhydroxides are attractive catalysts for oxygen evolution reactions (OERs). Further studies for developing transition‐metal oxyhydroxide catalysts and understanding their catalytic mechanisms will benefit their quick transition to the next catalysts. Herein, Mo‐doped CoOOH was designed as a high‐performance model electrocatalyst with durability for 20 h at 10 mA cm−2. Additionally, it had an overpotential of 260 mV (glassy carbon) or 215 mV (nickel foam), which was 78 mV lower than that of IrO2 (338 mV). In situ, Raman spectroscopy revealed the transformation process of CoOOH. Calculations using the density functional theory showed that during OER, doped Mo increased the spin‐up density of states and shrank the spin‐down bandgap of the 3d orbits in the reconstructed CoOOH under the electrochemical activation process, which simultaneously optimized the adsorption and electron conduction of oxygen‐related intermediates on Co sites and lowered the OER overpotentials. Our research provides new insights into the methodical planning of the creation of transition‐metal oxyhydroxide OER catalysts.
In Operando Identification of Geometrical-Site-Dependent Water Oxidation Activity of Spinel Co3O4

Abstract:Spinel Co3O4, comprising two types of cobalt ions: one Co(2+) in the tetrahedral site (Co(2+)(Td)) and the other two Co(3+) in the octahedral site (Co(3+)(Oh)), has been widely explored as a promising oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst for water electrolysis. However, the roles of two geometrical cobalt ions toward the OER have remained elusive. Here, we investigated the geometrical-site-dependent OER activity of Co3O4 catalyst by substituting Co(2+)(Td) and Co(3+)(Oh) with inactive Zn(2+) and Al(3+), respectively. Following a thorough in operando analysis by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, it was revealed that Co(2+)Td site is responsible for the formation of cobalt oxyhydroxide (CoOOH), which acted as the active site for water oxidation.
High‐Voltage‐Enabled Stable Cobalt Species Deposition on MnO2 for Water Oxidation in Acid

Abstract:The design and maintenance of highly active sites in an acidic environment is vital and challenging for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this work, it is found that the obtained CoO2 under high applied potential can be stable on MnO2 host in acidic environment, which may act as an effective means to solve the instability of cobalt‐based electrocatalyst. The significant improvement of acidic OER activity (6.9 times) and stability (46.4 times) of 90‐Co‐MnO2 (treated by molten salt with more Co deposition sites) demonstrates the advantages of this approach. In situ Raman and the Pourbaix diagram suggest that the enhanced performance derives from the stable presence of CoO2 at the voltage >1.8 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). However, when the potential is <1.8 V, the corresponding other cobalt species is too unstable to facilitate the OER. Density functional theorycalculations reveal that the deposited cobalt oxides can act as active sites, thus effectively reducing the reaction energy barrier of the rate‐determining step. This work provides a new perspective for enhancing the stability of cobalt‐based electrocatalyst. In the future, the dual consideration of applied potential and stable species of active element in the Pourbaix diagram may be a new direction for developing acid‐stable electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Spinel zinc cobalt oxide (ZnCo2O4) is considered as the promising electrocatalyst for the electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, theoretical calculations uncovered that the presence of low-spin (LS) state cobalt cations impedes the electrocatalytic activity of ZnCo2O4 because the t2g6eg0 configuration yields purely localized electronic structure with poor binding affinity with reaction intermediate. By regulating the spin state of cobalt cations in ZnCo2O4, spin-selected charge transfer is boosted during ORR/OER processes due to the propagated spin channel, thus causing abundant active sites for intermediates adsorption. Experimental results show that increasing calcination temperature during the synthesis process is an operable method to fabricate high-spin (HS) cobalt cations in ZnCo2O4. And the Li-O2 battery with ZnCo2O4 containing high-spin cobalt cations shows remarkably low overpotential of only 0.45 V and excellent durability of more than 800 h. This work underlines the critical role of the electron spin state in facilitating oxygen redox reactions on transition metal oxides.

Abstract:Cobalt oxohydroxides (CoOOH) is widely recognized as the true active species for Co‐based oxygen evolution reaction. The OER mechanism and controlled synthesis methods of CoOOH are reviewed, and the strategies for enhancing the OER performance of CoOOH are also summarized. Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the bottleneck for electrochemical water splitting due to its sluggish 4‐electron kinetics and high formation energy of O═O bond. Multiple kinds of Co‐based compounds such as oxides, hydroxides, sulfides, phosphides and so on are demonstrated to possess excellent OER activity. However, these materials will partially or fully convert to CoOOH after OER, and therefore CoOOH receive extensive research interests as the true active species for Co‐based OER catalyst in the past decade. Herein, the OER mechanism and synthesis of CoOOH and the strategies are reviewed for enhancing the OER performance of this kind of catalyst. The synthetic methods for CoOOH, including wet‐chemical oxidation method, electrochemical oxidation method, molten‐salt‐assisted synthesis and hydrothermal method will be reviewed and compared. Moreover, the strategies will be summarized for design active CoOOH‐based OER catalysts such as element doping and construction of hybrid catalysts in detail. Finally, an outlook is provided about the remaining challenges and future opportunities in this area.

Manipulating Spin Polarization of Defected Co3O4 for Highly Efficient Electrocatalysis

Abstract:Electrocatalytic water splitting is limited by kinetics-sluggish oxygen evolution, in which the activity of catalysts depends on their electronic structure. However, the influence of electron spin polarization on catalytic activity is ambiguous. Herein, we successfully regulate the spin polarization of Co 3 O 4 catalysts by tuning the concentration of cobalt defects from 0.8 to 14.5%. X-ray absorption spectroscopy spectra and density functional theory calculations confirm that the spin polarization of Co 3 O 4 is positively correlated with the concentration of cobalt defects. Importantly, the enhanced spin polarization can increase hydroxyl group absorption to significantly decrease the Gibbs free energy change value of the OER rate-determining step and regulate the spin polarization of oxygen species through a spin electron-exchange process to easily produce triplet-state O 2 , which can obviously increase electrocatalytic OER activity. In specific, Co 3 O 4 -50 with 14.5% cobalt defects exhibits the highest spin polarization and shows the best normalized OER activity. This work provides an important strategy to increase the water splitting activity of electrocatalysts via the rational regulation of electron spin polarization.

Abstract:Abstract Engineering an electrocatalytic anode material to boost reaction kinetics is highly desirable for the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which is the major obstacle for high efficiency water electrolysis. Here, we present a novel kind of Zn-doped Co 3 O 4 hollow dodecahedral electrocatalyst. Abundant oxygen vacancy defects are introduced due to the incorporation of Zn 2+ , which is beneficial for OH − adsorption and the charge transfer reaction during the OER process. Moreover, the increase in surface area caused by the advanced structure of the hollow porous dodecahedra facilitates mass transport by increasing the surface area. The novel strategy proposed in this study provides an efficient way to design high-performance electrocatalysts for water electrolysis.

Abstract:Providing the direct experimental evidence for confirming active and stable phase in cobalt-based electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline medium is crucial to design and fabricate high-performance electrocatalysts. Herein, we report the in situ fabrication of pure cobalt oxyhydroxide (CoOOH) phase with highly porous structures during OER testing process, which exhibits outstanding performance for OER with a low overpotential of 245 mV at 10 mAcm(-2) and retain stable catalytic activity for 250 h with no appreciable decay. Experimental characterizations revealed that the superior catalytic activity of as-formed CoOOH phase mainly arises from the highly porous structures, which endows the electrocatalyst with high specific surface area (similar to 200m(2) g(-1)), numerous accessible channels and abundant active sites. Evidence has been produced showing that the in situ formed pure CoOOH is the active and stable phase in cobalt-based electrocatalysts for OER in alkaline medium. In addition, the synthetic strategy applied here could provide a novel way to fabricate nanoporous structures under mild conditions using electrochemical oxidation method. (c) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:It is a challenging task to seek a highly-efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) of water splitting. Non-noble Co-based nanomaterials are considered as earth-abundant and effective catalysts to lower overpotential and increase polarization current density of OER. In this work, we reported, for the first time, a “rapid solvent-evaporation” strategy for the synthesis of three-dimensional (3D) cobalt complex hierarchical architectures constructed by two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets. The 3D structured cobalt complexes have excellent performances in catalyzing OER with lower onset potential, overpotential, Tafel slope and better stability than commercial IrO 2 . Superior electrochemical performances would be beneficial from the unique 3D structure. This extremely simple method for 3D Co complex with good OER activities makes the complex be promising commercial OER catalyst to replace earth-rare and expensive IrO 2 .

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a critical process in electrochemical energy storage and conversion systems. The adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM) pathway possesses the characteristics of high stability but slow catalytic kinetics. We propose that combining AEM with the lattice oxidation mechanism (LOM) pathway can potentially enhance the OER catalytic activity and stability. However, the triggering of LOM is an important challenge due to the high thermodynamic activation barrier of lattice oxygen. To solve this problem, we performed theoretical calculations and experiments which suggest that the introduction of low-valent Cu in CoOOH (CuxCo1-xOOH) could directionally modulate the local coordination environment of CoO bonds. This approach can activate lattice oxygen and generate oxygen vacancies to enhance the nucleophilic attack of *OH and directly establish OO coupling, thereby facilitating the smoothly switching from AEM to LOM pathway by increasing voltage and thus activating lattice oxygen in CuxCo1-xOOH. The switching of AEM and LOM enables CuxCo1-xOOH showing an outstanding overpotential of only 252 mV (10 mA cm-2) and durability of only 2.80 % degradation after 280h. This work provides a new way for designing efficient and stable electrocatalysts with AEM and LOM pathway switching.
Development of an Artificial Placenta IV: 24-Hour Venovenous Extracorporeal Life Support in Premature Lambs

Abstract:An extracorporeal artificial placenta would change the paradigm of treating extremely premature infants. We hypothesized that a venovenous extracorporeal life support (VV-ECLS) artificial placenta would maintain fetal circulation, hemodynamic stability, and adequate gas exchange for 24 hours. A near-term neonatal lamb model (130 days; term = 145 days) was used (n = 9). The right jugular vein was cannulated for VV-ECLS outflow, and an umbilical vein was used for inflow. The circuit included a peristaltic roller pump and a 0.5 m2 hollow fiber oxygenator. Lambs were maintained on VV-ECLS in an “amniotic bath” for up to 24 hours. Five of nine fetuses survived for 24 hours. In the survivors, average mean arterial pressure was 69 ± 10 mm Hg for the first 4 hours and 36 ± 8 mm Hg for the remaining 20 hours. The mean fetal heart rate was 202 ± 30. Mean VV-ECLS flow was 94 ± 20 ml/kg/min. Using a gas mixture of 50% O2/3% CO2 and sweep flow of 1–2 L/min, the mean pH was 7.27 ± 0.09, with Po2 of 35 ± 12 mm Hg and Pco2 of 48 ± 12 mm Hg. Necropsy revealed a patent ductus arteriosus in all cases, and there was no gross or microscopic intracranial hemorrhage. Complications in failed attempts included technically difficult cannulation and multisystem organ failure. Future studies will enhance stability and address the factors necessary for long-term support.
