Abstract:All-inorganic metal halide perovskite CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, I) nanocrystals (NCs) have demonstrated attractive optoelectronic characteristics. However, their photocatalytic properties are limited by their poor stability and easy recombination of photogenerated carriers. Herein, we introduced a CsPbBr3@MSNs nanocomposite (CsPbBr3 NCs embedded in dendritic mesoporous silica nanospheres (MSNs)) as photocatalysts for photoinduced electron transfer reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization. The CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (∼8.1 nm; PLQY of 62 ± 2.1%) were embedded in dendritic MSNs using a nanoconfinement strategy. PET-RAFT polymerization was successfully initiated using the CsPbBr3@MSNs nanocomposite as the photocatalyst. Reaction variables, such as catalyst loading, monomer composition, and excitation light wavelengths, were varied to yield polymers with the desired control of molecular weight and dispersity as well as block copolymers with high chain-end fidelity. In addition, the perovskite-based photocatalysts could be readily separated and purified, which allowed effective and rapid recycling of the nanocomposites for multiple polymerization cycles.

Regulating Charge Carrier Dynamics in Stable Perovskite Nanorods for Photo-Induced Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization

Abstract:Semiconducting nanocrystals have attracted world-wide research interest in artificial photosynthesis due to their appealing properties and enticing potentials in converting solar energy into valuable chemicals. Compared to 0D nanoparticles, 1D nanorods afford long-distance charge carriers separation and extended charge carriers lifetime due to the release of quantum confinement in axial direction. Herein, stable CsPbBr3 nanorods of distinctive dimensions are crafted without altering their properties and morphology via grafting hydrophobic polystyrene (PS) chains through a post-synthesis ligand exchange process. The resulting PS-capped CsPbBr3 nanorods exhibit a series of enhanced stabilities against UV irradiation, elevated temperature, and polar solvent, making them promising candidates for photo-induced atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Tailoring the surface chemistry and dimension of the PS-capped CsPbBr3 nanorods endows stable, but variable reaction kinetics in the photo-induced ATRP of methyl methacrylate. The trapping-detrapping process of photogenerated charge carriers lead to extended lifetime of charge carriers in lengthened CsPbBr3 nanorods, contributing to a facilitated reaction kinetics of photo-induced ATRP. Therefore, by leveraging such stable PS-capped CsPbBr3 nanorods, the effects of surface chemistry and charge carriers dynamics on its photocatalytic performance are scrutinized, providing fundamental understandings for designing next-generation efficient nanostructured photocatalyst in artificial photosynthesis and solar energy conversion.
In Situ Synthesis of Lead-Free Halide Perovskite–COF Nanocomposites as Photocatalysts for Photoinduced Polymerization in Both Organic and Aqueous Phases

Abstract:A critical challenge that hinders the application of perovskite materials is their instability toward water and light. Herein, we report lead-free bismuth halide perovskite nanocrystals encapsulated by the covalent organic frameworks (PNCs–COFs) via an in situ growth approach. The PNCs–COFs nanocomposites demonstrated good water processability that originates from the hydrophobic COFs shell. Furthermore, the COFs coating enables the formation of PNCs–COFs heterojunction, which facilitates the generation and transportation of photoinduced charge carriers. The PNCs–COFs were further applied as photocatalysts for free-radical polymerizations, photoactivating different coinitiators via both hole and electron transfer mechanisms in aqueous and organic phases. The excellent photocatalytic performance of PNCs–COFs was confirmed by high monomer conversion (up to 97.5%), diverse functional group tolerance and recyclability.

Abstract:It is well known that the recently developed photoinduced metal-free atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) has been considered as a promising methodology to completely eliminate transition metal residue in polymers. However, a serious problem needs to be improved, namely, large amount of organic photocatalysts should be used to keep the controllability over molecular weights and molecular weight distributions. In this work, a novel photocatalyst 1,2,3,5-tetrakis(carbazol-9-yl)-4,6-dicyanobenzene (4CzIPN) with strong excited state reduction potential is successfully used to mediate a metal-free ATRP of methyl methacrylate just with parts per million (ppm) level usage under irradiation of blue light emitting diode at room temperature, using ethyl α-bromophenyl-acetate as a typical initiator with high initiator efficiency. The polymerization kinetic study, multiple controlled "on-off" light switching cycle regulation, and chain extension experiment confirm the "living"/controlled features of this promising photoinduced metal-free ATRP system with good molecular weight control in the presence of ppm level photocatalyst 4CzIPN.

Abstract:Exploring photocatalysts to foster CO2 photoreduction into high value-added chemicals is of great significance. Lead halide perovskites (LHPs) have recently been extensively investigated as photocatalysts, owing to their facile fabrication and prominent optoelectronic properties. However, the toxicity of lead and instability will hinder their future large-scale applications. To address these challenges, a series of lead-free Sb-based all-inorganic mixed halide perovskite Cs3Sb2(BrxI1-x)(9) (0 <= x <= 1) nanoplatelets (NPLs) is synthesized. The perovskite NPLs are prepared using a ligand-assisted re-precipitation approach at 50 degrees C. The authors observe the tunability of their optical band gaps from 2.1 to 2.5 eV, and they can maintain the excellent stability over 120 h under heating at 100 degrees C or UV light irradiation. The resultant materials are employed as efficient photocatalysts for visible-light driven CO2 reduction at the gas-solid interface. The Cs3Sb2(Br0.7I0.3)(9) perovskite NPLs afford an impressive overall yield of 27.7 mu mol g(-1) for the selective photocatalytic conversion of CO2 into CO. This study represents a significant demonstration for practical artificial photosynthesis by using LHP materials as photocatalysts.

Abstract:Organocatalytic atom transfer radical polymerization (O-ATRP) as a metal-free controlled polymerization method represents an appealing approach for polymer synthesis, in which the organic photocatalyst is critical to the polymerization efficiency and control. Herein, we introduce sulfur-doped anthanthrene (SDA) as a new and effective organic photoredox catalyst (OPC) for O-ATRP, by following the photocatalyst design logic of heteroatom-doping of polycyclic arenes (HDPA). SDA could promote the O-ATRP of methacrylate monomers with good control on both molecular weight and low dispersity at 10-100 ppm catalyst loadings under visible light, even under green light in the absence of external electron donors. Further extension of SDA catalyst to photoinduced electron/energy transfer addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization under green light is also demonstrated.

Abstract:Structure and morphology engineering of conjugated microporous polymers has been considered a promising strategy in the field of photopolymerization as it has the potential to promote catalytic efficiency and address challenges in product contamination. Herein, hollow conjugated microporous photocatalysts (S-hPorIPN MSs) were constructed by Sonogashira–Hagihara polycondensation on the surface of SiO2 templates, followed by removal of the SiO2 inner cores and sulfonation of the conjugated shells. Upon the introduction of cyano and sulfonic acid substituents, S-hPorIPN MSs were utilized as an excellent heterogeneous photocatalyst to trigger aqueous RAFT polymerization by a 740 nm near-infrared (NIR) light, affording the preparation of diverse polymers with predictable molecular weight and narrow dispersity. The enhanced penetration capabilities provided by NIR wavelengths allowed the photopolymerization to be conducted through synthetic and biological barriers at faster polymerization rates in a non-degassed system. Furthermore, high end-group integrity, excellent monomer/chain transfer agent adaptation, and reliable reusability were highlighted on the S-hPorIPN MSs being applied as photocatalysts for NIR-light-driven polymerization. Taking advantage of the higher surface-area-to-volume ratio and more accessible active sites of S-hPorIPN MSs, we presented the first metal-free heterogeneous catalyst system capable of achieving faster polymerization rates through light-proof barriers for aqueous RAFT polymerization.

Abstract:Visible‐light‐induced halide‐exchange between halide perovskite and organohalide solvents has been studied in which photo‐induced electron‐transfer from CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (NCs) to dihalomethane solvent molecules produces halide anions via reductive dissociation, followed by a spontaneous anion‐exchange. Photo‐generated holes in this process are less focused. Here, for CsPbBr3 in dibromomethane (DBM), we discover that Br radical (Br•) is a key intermediate resulting from the hole‐oxidation. We successfully trapped Br• with reported methods and found that Br• is in continuous generation in DBM under visible light irradiation, hence imperative for catalytic reaction design. Continuous Br• within this halide‐exchange process is active for photocatalytic [3+2] cycloaddition for vinylcyclopentane synthesis, a privileged scaffold in medicinal chemistry, with good yield and rationalized diastereoselectivity. The NCs photocatalyst is highly recyclable due to Br‐based self‐healing, leading to a particularly economic and neat heterogeneous reaction where the solvent DBM also behaves as a co‐catalyst for perovskite photocatalysis. Halide perovskites, notable for efficient solar energy conversion, herein are demonstrated as an exceptional photocatalyst for Br radical‐mediated [3+2] cycloaddition. We envisage such perovskite‐induced Br radical strategy may serve as a powerful chemical tool to develop valuable halogen radical‐involved reactions.

Ultrasmall CsPbBr3 Nanocrystals as a Recyclable Heterogeneous Photocatalyst in 100% E- and Anti-Markovnikov Sulfinylsulfonation of Terminal Alkynes

Abstract:The precise synthesis of ultrasmall, monodisperse CsPbBr3 nanocrystals is crucial due to their enhanced photophysical properties resulting from strong quantum confinement effects. Traditional methods struggle with size control, complicating synthesis. Although CsPbBr3 nanocrystals find applications in LEDs and photovoltaics, their use in photocatalysis for organic reactions remains limited. Our study introduces ultrasmall TBIA-CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (∼5.6 nm), synthesized via a three-precursor hot injection method using tribromoisocyanuric acid (TBIA) as a bromine precursor for the first time. These nanocrystals exhibit a near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 0.99 and an elevated oxidation potential of +1.80 V. We demonstrate their efficacy as recyclable heterogeneous photocatalysts in a one-pot, 100% E-selective, anti-Markovnikov sulfinylsulfonation of terminal alkynes under visible light, achieving a high product conversion rate (PCR) of 62,500 μmol g-1 h-1 and recyclability for up to five cycles. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations support the exclusive formation of the E-isomer. TBIA-CsPbBr3 outperforms other CsPbBr3 perovskites in photocatalysis, with superior efficiency attributed to their extended excited-state lifetime and higher surface area, which accelerates the organic transformation process.

Abstract:Pure organic, heterogeneous, metal-free, and visible light-active photocatalysts offer a more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional metal-based catalysts. Here we report a series of microporous organic polymers containing photoactive conjugated organic semiconductor units as heterogeneous photocatalysts for a visible-light-promoted, highly selective bromination reaction of electron-rich aromatic compounds using HBr as a bromine source and molecular oxygen as a clean oxidant. Via a simple Friedel–Crafts alkylation reaction, the microporous organic polymers were obtained by cross-linking of organic semiconductor compounds with defined valence and conduction band positions. The utilization of the simply prepared porous polymer-based photocatalytic systems opens new opportunities toward a sustainable and efficient material design for catalysis.

Abstract:Nature is capable of storing solar energy in chemical bonds via photosynthesis through a series of C–C, C–O and C–N bond-forming reactions starting from CO<sub>2</sub> and light. Direct capture of solar energy for organic synthesis is a promising approach. Lead (Pb)-halide perovskite solar cells reach 24.2% power conversion efficiency, rendering perovskite a unique type material for solar energy capture. We argue that photophysical properties of perovskites already proved for photovoltaics, also should be of interest in photoredox organic synthesis. Because the key aspects of these two applications are both relying on charge separation and transfer. Here we demonstrated that perovskites nanocrystals are exceptional candidates as photocatalysts for fundamental organic reactions, for example C–C, C–N and C–O bond-formations. Stability of CsPbBr<sub>3</sub> in organic solvents and ease-of-tuning their bandedges garner perovskite a wider scope of organic substrate activations. Our low-cost, easy-to-process, highly-efficient, air-tolerant and bandedge-tunable perovskites may bring new breakthrough in organic chemistry.

Abstract:Photo-mediation offers unparalleled spatiotemporal control over controlled radical polymerizations (CRP). Photo-induced electron/energy transfer reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization is particularly versatile owing to its oxygen tolerance and wide range of compatible photocatalysts. In recent years, broadband- and near-infrared (NIR)-mediated polymerizations have been of particular interest owing to their potential for solar-driven chemistry and biomedical applications. In this work, we present the first example of a novel photocatalyst for both full broadband- and NIR-mediated CRP in aqueous conditions. Well-defined polymers were synthesized in water under blue, green, red, and NIR light irradiation. Exploiting the oxygen tolerant and aqueous nature of our system, we also report PET-RAFT polymerization at the microliter scale in a mammalian cell culture medium.
Novel Photocatalyst Based on Through‐Space Charge Transfer Induced Intersystem Crossing Enables Rapid and Efficient Polymerization Under Low‐Power Excitation Light

Abstract:Currently, most photoredox catalysis polymerization systems are limited by high excitation power, long polymerization time, or the requirement of electron donors due to the precise design of efficient photocatalysts still poses a great challenge. Herein, we propose a new approach: the creation of efficient photocatalysts having high ground state oxidation potentials and high excited state energy levels, along with through-space charge transfer induced intersystem crossing (ISC) properties. Using this strategy, a cabazole-naphthalimide (NI) dyad (NI-1) characterized by long triplet excited state lifetime (tT = 62 μs), satisfactory ISC efficiency (ΦΔ = 54.3%) and powerful reduction capacity [Singlet: E1/2 (PC+1/*PC) = -1.93 eV, Triplet: E1/2 (PC+1/*PC) = -0.84 eV] was obtained. An efficient and rapid polymerization (83% conversion of 1 mM monomer in 30 s) was observed under the conditions of without electron donor, low excitation power (10 mW cm-2) and low catalyst (NI-1) loading (< 50 mM). In contrast, the conversion rate was lower at 29% when the reference catalyst (NI-4) was used for photopolymerization under the same conditions, demonstrating the advantage of the TSCT photocatalyst. Finally, the TSCT material was used as a photocatalyst in practical lithography for the first time, achieving pattern resolutions of up to 10 μm.

Abstract:In order to fully utilize low-energy near-infrared (NIR) light for photoinduced atom transfer radical polymerization (photo-ATRP), it is essential to develop suitable photocatalytic systems capable of participating in photoinduced electron transfer processes with ATRP catalysts, generating activating species. By employing structural and morphological engineering techniques, a range of hollow conjugated microporous polymers (HCMPs) were fabricated by incorporating photoactive phenothiazine as the donor unit and various alkyne-terminated linkers as acceptor units via the Sonogashira-Hagihara cross-coupling reaction on silica templates, followed by removal of the silica inner cores. Manipulating the electron affinity of the acceptor units allowed for control over the electron delocalization and exciton binding energy of the HCMPs, ultimately enhancing the charge separation efficiency and photocatalytic performance for photo-ATRP. Because of the superior penetration abilities of NIR wavelengths, photo-ATRP was effectively performed through nontransparent physical and biological barriers, showcasing rapid polymerization rates. This led to the efficient polymerization of diverse acrylates and methacrylates with high monomer conversion, precise molecular weight, and narrow dispersity. Notably, this approach enabled the synthesis of enzyme-polymer bioconjugates without the need for tedious deoxygenation at NIR wavelengths, rendering them ideal for highly stable and circular photobiocatalysis in aerobic environments. The heterogeneous nature of the HCMPs facilitates easy separation and effective reusability in subsequent polymerization processes.
Revealing the A‐Site Effect of Lead‐Free A 3 Sb 2 Br 9 Perovskite in Photocatalytic C(sp 3 )−H Bond Activation

Abstract:The lead-free halide perovskite A3 Sb2 Br9 is utilized as a photocatalyst for the first time for C(sp3 )-H bond activation. A3 Sb2 Br9 nanoparticles (A3 Sb2 Br9 NPs) with different ratios of Cs and CH3 NH3 (MA) show different photocatalytic activities for toluene oxidation and the photocatalytic performance is enhanced when increasing the amount of Cs. The octahedron distortion caused by A-site cations can change the electronic properties of X-site ions and further affect the electron transfer from toluene molecules to Br sites. After the regulation of A-site cations, the photocatalytic activity is higher with A3 Sb2 Br9 NPs than that with classic photocatalysts (TiO2 , WO3 , and CdS). The main active species involved in photocatalytic oxidation of toluene are photogenerated holes (h+ ) and superoxide anions (. O2 - ). The octahedron distortion by A-site cations affecting photocatalytic activity remains unique and is also a step forward for understanding more about halide-perovskite-based photocatalysis. The relationship between octahedron distortion and photocatalysis can also guide the design of new photocatalytic systems involving other halide perovskites.
Precise Single‐Atom Modification of Hybrid Lead Chlorides for Electron Donor‐Acceptor Effect and Enhanced Photocatalytic Aerobic Oxidation

Abstract:Hybrid lead halides show significant potential in photocatalysis due to their excellent photophysical properties, but the atomically precise modification of their organic component to achieve synergistic interactions with the lead halide units remains a great challenge. Herein, for the first time, we have employed the crystal engineering strategy to construct a class of single-atom-substituted hybrid lead halides with electron donor-acceptor (D-A) effect. The lead halide frameworks consist of 1D linear [PbCl]+ chains as inorganic building units and benzoxadiazole/benzothiadiazole/ benzoselenadiazole-funtionalized dicarboxylates as linkers. The covalent bonding between the organic ligands with electron-withdrawing groups and the electron-rich lead halide units not only facilitate the charge separation, but also enhance structural robustness that is critical for photocatalysis. The D-A structured lead halides serve as highly efficient heterogeneous photooxidation catalysts, including aerobic oxidation of C(sp3)-H bonds, oxidative coupling of primary amines, oxidation of phenylboronic acids and selective oxidation of sulfides that are demonstrated in 30 examples. Importantly, these photooxidation reactions are able to be driven by natural sunlight and ambient air to afford quantitative yields. Moreover, our lead halide photocatalysts are successful to fix into a photocatalytic flow system, which enables the flow-type synthesis of high value-added photooxidation products on a gram scale.

Abstract:Composition engineering of halide perovskite allows the tunability of the band gap over a wide range so that photons can be effectively harvested, an aspect that is of critical importance for increasing the efficiency of photocatalysis under sunlight. However, the poor stability and the low photocatalytic activity of halide perovskites prevent use of these defect-tolerant materials in wide applications involving photocatalysis. Here, an alcohol-based photocatalytic system for dye degradation demonstrated high stability through the use of double perovskite of Cs2 AgBiBr6 . The reaction rate on Cs2 AgBiBr6 is comparable to that on CdS, a model inorganic semiconductor photocatalyst. The fact of fast reaction between free radicals and dye molecules indicates the unique catalytic properties of the Cs2 AgBiBr6 surface. Deposition of metal clusters onto Cs2 AgBiBr6 effectively enhances the photocatalytic activity. Although the stability (five consecutive photocatalytic cycles without obvious decrease of efficiency) requires further improvements, the results indicate the significant potential of Cs2 AgBiBr6 -based photocatalysis.
Persistent Radical Anions: Efficient Catalysts for Iodine-Mediated Reversible-Deactivation Radical Polymerization Driven by NIR LED Light

Abstract:Developing new catalysts with obvious advantages than existing ones is charming but very challenging for near infrared (NIR)-photocontrolled reversible-deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP). Herein, a high-efficiency NIR-photocontrolled bromine-iodine transformation RDRP (BIT-RDRP) system was developed by employing persistent radical anions (PRAs) as the catalysts. Specifically, some inherent electron deficient species, such as 1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (NTCDA), can be reduced to PRAs in the presence of common reducing agents (e.g., sodium ascorbate (SA)). Subsequently, the electron-donating PRAs activate the carbon-halogen bonds of dormant species with the help of NIR light and facilitate the formation of carbon-centered radicals (CCRs) to initiate polymerizations. With the assistance of this catalytic system, a monomer conversion of more than 97.0% was achieved within 180–240 min and the polymerization process was still controllable. In addition, several other types of PRA catalysts have also been developed for confirming the catalytic mechanism. All PRAs exhibit highly catalytic ability in the BIT-RDRP system, which opens up a direction for the further development of NIR-photocontrolled RDRP.

Abstract:Near-infrared (NIR) photoinduced chemical processes are highly attractive for specific applications owing to the deep penetration of NIR into the nontransparent materials including biological and synthetic materials. Robust NIR photo-induced atom transfer radical polymerization (photoATRP) was achieved using upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) as an internal light converter to turn a 980 nm NIR light to the wavelength of UV/vislight. This NIR photoATRP was capable of polymerizing both hydrophobic and hydrophilic monomers at a low loading of ppm concentrations of the CuBr2/tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine catalyst under the irradiation of a 980 nm NIR light (4 W/cm(2)) and UCNPs with reusable performance, providing well-defined polymers with predetermined molecular weight, low dispersity, and excellent chain-end fidelity. The switching of light "on/off" showed an excellent temporal control of the polymerization. The NIR photoATRP exhibited excellent penetrations through several visible light-proof barriers using NIR light, and it may provide future directions of photopolymerization in nontransparent systems, especially biological systems containing photosensitive moieties.
Pyridine-Diketopyrrolopyrrole-Based Novel Metal-Free Visible-Light Organo-Photoredox Catalyst for Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization.

Abstract:In the field of electronics, organocatalysts are in high demand for use in the synthesis of clean polymers using solar radiation rather than potentially contaminating metals. Combining theoretical design, simulation, and experiments, this work presents a novel, pyridine-diketopyrrolopyrrole (P-DPP)-based metal-free visible-light organophotoredox catalyst (P-DPP). It is effective in the photocontrolled organocatalytic atom-transfer radical polymerization (O-ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and styrene. The use of this catalyst and white light-emitting diode (LED) irradiation produces polymers with a cross-linked feature. In O-ATRP, the P-DPP catalyst has an oxidative quenching catalytic mechanism with an excited-state reductive potential of -1.8 V, fluorescence lifetime of 7.5 ns, and radical-cation oxidative potential of 0.45 V. Through molecular simulation, we found that the adjacent pyridine group is key to reducing the alkyl halide initiator and generating radicals, while the diketopyrrolopyrrole core stabilizes the triplet state of the catalyst through intramolecular charge transfer. The findings related to this novel photoredox catalyst will aid in the search for much more effective organophotoredox catalysts for use in controlled radical polymerization. They will also be of value in the fields of polymer chemistry and physics and in various applications.
