Abstract:Acidification is a major constraint for revegetation of sulphidic metal-contaminated soils, as exemplified by the limited literature reporting the successful phytostabilization of mine soils associated with pH<3 and high acidification potential. In this study, a combination of ameliorants (lime and chicken manure) and five acid-tolerant plant species has been employed in order to establish a self-sustaining vegetation cover on an extremely acid (pH<3) polymetallic pyritic mine waste heap in southern China exhibiting high acidification potential. The results from the first two-year data showed that the addition of the amendments and the establishment of a plant cover were effective in preventing soil acidification. Net acid-generating potential of the mine soil decreased steadily, whilst pH and acid neutralization capacity increased over time. All the five acid-tolerant plants colonized successfully in the acidic metal-contaminated soil and developed a good vegetation cover within six months, and subsequent vegetation development enhanced organic matter accumulation and nutrient element status in the mine soil. The two-year remediation program performed on this extremely acid metalliferous soil indicated that aided phytostabilization can be a practical and effective restoration strategy for such extremely acid mine soils.
Phytostabilisation with Mediterranean shrubs and liming improved soil quality in a pot experiment with a pyrite mine soil

Abstract:Phytoremediation can be a suitable option to manage derelict mine soils. A pot experiment was carried out under semi-controlled conditions with a mine-impacted soil. A further contamination event was mimicked by applying 5% of pyritic sludge. Four species were planted in pots (Myrtus communis, Retama sphaerocarpa, Rosmarinus officinalis and Tamarix gallica), and some pots remained unplanted as a control. The substrates were moderately to highly contaminated, mainly with arsenic and zinc. The strong acidification induced by the pyritic sludge was buffered with lime and plants survived in all the pots. Liming provoked an effective immobilisation of metals and arsenic. Plant establishment decreased labile As in the substrate by 50%, mainly M. communis, although the levels of extractable metals were not affected by the plants. R. sphaerocarpa and M. communis increased the levels of C and N in the soil by 23% and 34% respectively, and also enhanced enzymatic activities and microbial respiration to the double in some cases. The low transfer of trace elements to shoots limited the phytoextraction rate. Our results support the use of phytostabilisation in Mediterranean mine soils and show how plants of R. sphaerocarpa and M. communis may increase soil health and quality during revegetation.

Abstract:Land degradation, and especially acidification, are global issues that need to be addressed. A common practice to correct this problem is the use of lime or chemical fertilisers that involve the extraction of raw materials. This study proposes a more sustainable alternative using Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) slag. BOF slag is the main waste from the steel industry that is usually accumulated in landfills, which also implies environmental impacts. In this study, a series of laboratory tests have been carried out to analyse the feasibility of using BOF slag for the reclamation of degraded land. For soil acidification, BOF slag will be analysed as a liming agent. On the other hand, the benefits slag can provide as a nutrient source will be tested. As an added value, pre-treated and untreated slag will be compared. The results of these short-time experiments show how BOF slag could be a sustainable alternative as liming agent and amendment. Its use increased the levels of some micro and macronutrients available for plant growth and improved soil quality. It could, therefore, be a sustainable management practice that makes an important contribution to the circular economy.

Abstract:Abstract One of the legacies of the coal mining industry is the existence of numerous colliery spoil mounds. Run-off waters from some of these mounds result in oxidation of sulphur compounds causing pH to drop to perhaps as low as 2.5. At this pH, mobility for metals increases and it results in destruction of both flora and fauna. In order to reduce acidity, a number of solutions have been investigated with varying degree of success. A recent study to reduce acidity in spoil run-off water included the use of Basic Oxygen Steel slag. Its slow release of lime resulted in longer term remediation compared with other techniques. In addition to this, steel slag contains elements which are essential for plant growth and can be regarded as a weak fertiliser. This was substantiated in two field trials, which had the aim of not only remediating acidity from two different types of colliery spoils, but also to develop a composition that supports grass growth. The objectives were achieved at both sites and some of the results of over 5000 chemical tests conducted during these studies are reported in this paper.

Abstract:For retrieval purposes, large amounts of audiovisual contents are indexed before being stored. For recommendation systems as well as for a simple usage of a search engine, some information on the similarity between two contents is required in order to identify relevant contents. But the concept of similarity can be interpreted under many points of views. We will present three different and original approaches developed at the IRIT in order to associate a value to the similarity. The first one considers that the similarity consists in a similar temporal evolution of a subset of descriptors. This leads to determine the subset of features which can be used for the evaluation. The second one consists in considering the way events are organized along the temporal dimension. Similar correlations between events are likely to highlight a global similarity between two contents. The last approach consists in involving the end user in the similarity definition. For two different tasks, one may consider that two documents considered as similar for the first one, are not similar anymore for the second one. We propose an interface where the user set the position of small set of documents on the computer screen. The more the contents are similar, the closer they are expected to be one with each other. The system then tries to extract from that configuration rules which could express the similarity nature and then apply them to the whole content set in order to show it on the screen in an organized manner.

Abstract:The effective utilization of slag fertilizer in agriculture to neutralize soil acidity, improve crop productivity, mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, and stabilize heavy metals in contaminated soils turns it into a high value added product in sustainable agriculture. These effects could be due to the shift in microbial metabolism and/or modification of microbial habitats. At the system level, soil microorganisms play an integral role in virtually all ecosystem processes. There is a growing interest to reveal the underlying mechanisms of slag-microbe interactions and the contribution of soil biota to ecosystem functioning. In this perspective, we discuss the possible driving mechanisms of slag-microbe interactions in soil and how these slag-microbe interactions can affect crop yield, greenhouse gas emissions, soil carbon sequestration, and heavy metal stabilization in contaminated soils. In addition, we discuss the problems and environmental concerns in using slag in agriculture. Emphasis has been given for further research to validate the proposed mechanisms associated with slag-microbe interactions for increasing soil quality, crop productivity, and mitigating environmental consequences. While evaluating the slag amendment, effects on agriculture and environment, the potential risks, socio-economics, techno-economics, and ethics should be assessed.

Effect of different direct revegetation strategies on the mobility of heavy metals in artificial zinc smelting waste slag: Implications for phytoremediation

Abstract:The establishment of vegetation cover is an important strategy to reduce wind and water erosion at metal smelting waste slag sites. However, the mobility of heavy metals in waste slag-vegetation-leachate systems after the application of revegetation strategies is still unclear. Large microcosm experiments were conducted for revegetation of waste slag for 98 d using combined amendments, i.e., phosphate rock and an organic waste coming from the anaerobic digestion of pig manure (named as biogas residue), and by single- and co-planted perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and Trifolium repens (T. repens). The results showed that the application of biogas residue slightly increased the concentrations of Zn and Cd in the leachates; however, the establishment of plants could avoid the excessive leaching of heavy metals coming from the biogas residue. The bioavailability of Cu, Zn, and Cd slightly increased, but Pb bioavailability significantly decreased regardless of single- or co-planting patterns. Additionally, the bioavailability of Cu, Zn, and Cd in the waste slag revegetated with perennial ryegrass was lower than that in T. repens under the single-planting pattern. The change in the heavy metals bioavailability under different revegetation strategies was mainly due to the root-induced change in the pH and speciation of heavy metals in the waste slag. The application of biogas residue and phosphate rock tends to the immobilization of Pb. Heavy metals mainly accumulated in the underground parts of the two herbs, and the heavy metal contents in the underground parts of perennial ryegrass were higher than those in T. repens regardless of single- or co-planting patterns. The heavy metals accumulated in T. repens were lower than those in perennial ryegrass in the single-planting pattern. The bioaccumulation and transportation factors of the two herbs were extremely low. Thus, the two herbs are potential candidates for phytostabilization of zinc smelting waste slag sites.

Abstract:Phytoremediation techniques have emerged as a promising approach for soil reclamation and remediation of contaminated sites. This review article provides a comprehensive analysis of the different phytoremediation techniques used for soil reclamation and their effectiveness in removing contaminants from soil. The aim is to evaluate the current state of knowledge and to highlight potential avenues for future research in this field. The review begins with a discussion of the principles underlying phytoremediation, emphasizing the ability of plants to accumulate, tolerate, and detoxify contaminants through various mechanisms such as phytoaccumulation, rhizo-degradation, and rhizo-filtration. Different plant species and their suitability for phytoremediation are reviewed, considering factors such as metal tolerance, biomass production, and pollutant uptake efficiency. In addition, the role of soil amendments and their impact on improving phytoremediation efficiency is critically evaluated. Commonly used amendments, including chelating agents, organic matter, and pH adjusters, are reviewed with emphasis on their ability to increase metal bioavailability and plant uptake. The review also addresses challenges associated with phytoremediation, such as plant growth limitations, long-term sustainability, and potential risks associated with the release of pollutants into the atmosphere during biomass disposal. Strategies to mitigate these challenges, including plant breeding and genetic engineering, are discussed.
Reclamation of arsenic contaminated soils around mining site using solidification/stabilization combined with revegetation

Abstract:Arsenic (As) is a known carcinogen and is one of the most commonly reported contaminants in farmland soils around mining sites. This study aimed to investigate four different soil amendments (rice husk biochar (RHB), maple leaf biochar (MLB), red mud (R.M), and steel slag (S.S)) with respect to the stabilization of arsenic in soil combined with revegetation of two hyperaccumulators (Asteraceae (lettuce) and Brassicaceae (mustard green)). Soil amendments at different application rates (0.5%, 1%, and 2% w/w) and small particle sizes (<74 μm) were added to the soil. A different pattern was observed for stabilization of As in treated soils. A meaningful decline in As stabilization was observed with increasing application dosage of MLB, R.M, and S.S, while in case of RHB efficiency was increased. Generally, maximum stabilization efficiency of As was observed following the adding of RHB (2%), MLB (0.5%), R.M (0.5%), and S.S (0.5%), by 90%, 94%, 94%, and 89%, respectively, which was primarily attributed to amendments-induced specific surface area within the structure. For lettuce, As was strongly accumulated by leaves, while As, for mustard green, was extracted much more by its roots. Sequential extraction analysis confirmed high proportions of Fe and Mn oxides and organic fractions of As, before and after planting. Altogether, the establishment of a suitable plant cover on treated soil with amendments showed encouraging results for preventing the dispersion of As through runoff and percolation. Besides, this combined technique, which is aesthetically pleasant, increases biodiversity.

Abstract:Steel slags are solid residual materials formed as by-products throughout the process of steel production within the steelmaking industry. These wastes have good physical properties such as high stiffness and friction angle for use as road fill materials or in geotechnical applications. However, the presence of heavy metals and high alkalinity levels constitute significant environmental hazards and set limitations on using slags in engineering applications. While there have been investigations into the mechanical characteristics of steel slags, research on assessing potential harm when utilizing the materials in engineering applications is rare. This study examines the mitigation methods to address the environmental problems associated with steel slags. To do this, two different steel slags with different production techniques were treated with soils of different properties such as fine and coarse sand, bentonite, kaolin, and natural clay. The pH and electrical conductivity (EC) values of pure steel slags were determined using the water leach test (WLT). Variations in pH and EC values of steel slags subjected to treatment were evaluated through both WLT and sequential water leach (SWLT) tests. As a result, the high strength, stiffness, and drainage capability of EAF and LS steel slags make these materials suitable for road filling. This is further backed by their soaked and unsoaked CBR values. During the water leach tests, notable decreases in pH were observed with a 60% natural clay (NC) solution, resulting in a decrease of 1.2 and 0.7 in EAF and LS, respectively. The addition of sand had a negligible impact on pH due to its inert characteristics. Moreover, in sequential water leach tests, the most significant decrease in pH was observed with NC (with a reduction of 2.0 points for EAF and 0.9 points for LS) through enhanced ion exchange and extended periods of dilution and buffering. Also, the use of NC resulted in substantial decreases in EC for EAF and LS, with reductions of 77% and 81%, respectively. Moreover, heavy metal concentrations in leachate waters from pure steel slags have been detected, and the effect of treatment on aluminum and iron concentrations has been determined. The results indicate that the use of natural soil significantly drops the pH and lowers the trace metal concentrations within the leachate.

Environmental benefit assessment of steel slag utilization and carbonation: A systematic review

Abstract:The rapid increase in steel slag generation globally highlights the urgent need to manage the disposal or utilization processes. In addition to conventional landfill disposal, researchers have successfully reused steel slag in the construction, chemical, and agricultural fields. With the large portions of alkaline silicate mineral content, steel slag can also be used as a suitable material for carbon capture to mitigate global warming. This article comprehensively reviews the environmental performance of steel slag utilization, especially emphasizing quantitative evaluation using life cycle assessment. This paper first illustrates the production processes, properties, and applications of steel slag, and then summarizes the key findings of the environmental benefits for steel slag utilization using life cycle assessment from the reviewed literature. This paper also identifies the limitations of quantifying the environmental benefits using life cycle assessment. The results indicate steel slag is largely utilized in pavement concrete and/or block as a substitution for natural aggregates. The associated environmental benefits are mostly attributed to the avoidance of the large amount of cement utilized. The environmental benefits for the substitution of traditional energy-intensive material and carbonation treatment are further discussed in detail. Due to the presence of heavy metals, the potential risks to human and ecological health caused by the manufacturing process and usage stage are examined. Finally, the current challenges and global social implications for steel slag valorization are summarized.

Abstract:Abstract With the increase in iron/steel production, the higher volume of by-products (slag) generated necessitates its efficient recycling. Because the Linz-Donawitz (LD) slag is rich in silicon (Si) and other fertilizer components, we aim to evaluate the impact of the LD slag amendment on soil quality (by measuring soil physicochemical and biological properties), plant nutrient uptake, and strengthens correlations between nutrient uptake and soil bacterial communities. We used 16 S rRNA illumine sequencing to study soil bacterial community and APIZYM assay to study soil enzymes involved in C, N, and P cycling. The LD slag was applied at 2 Mg ha −1 to Japonica and Indica rice cultivated under flooded conditions. The LD slag amendment significantly improved soil pH, plant photosynthesis, soil nutrient availability, and the crop yield, irrespective of cultivars. It significantly increased N, P, and Si uptake of rice straw. The slag amendment enhanced soil microbial biomass, soil enzyme activities and enriched certain bacterial taxa featuring copiotrophic lifestyles and having the potential role for ecosystem services provided to the benefit of the plant. The study evidenced that the short-term LD slag amendment in rice cropping systems is useful to improve soil physicochemical and biological status, and the crop yield.

Urinary elimination of cocaine metabolites in chronic cocaine users during cessation.

Abstract:We previously showed that chronic cocaine use by active illicit users produced a longer plasma half-life than expected based on acute low-dose cocaine studies. Here we report urinary excretion patterns of cocaine metabolites as benzoylecgonine (BE) equivalents from 18 of the same individuals, housed for up to 14 days on a closed research unit. In addition, we evaluated whether creatinine normalization of BE equivalents increased mean detection time and reduced mean within-subject variability. All urine voids (N = 953) were individually assayed; BE equivalents were determined semi-quantitatively by FPIA. Compared to concentration in first void after admission, BE equivalents decreased to approximately 33%, 8%, and 4% at 24, 48, and 72 h, respectively. Mean +/- SD (range) time to first negative specimen (BE equivalents < 300 ng/mL) was 43.6 +/- 17.1 (16-66) h. BE equivalents fluctuated considerably across successive specimens; 69% of participants tested positive at least once after testing negative, and the mean time to last positive specimen was 57.5 +/- 31.6 (11-147) h after the first specimen. Thus, mean cocaine metabolite detection times were consistent with prolonged elimination, with 63% of participants testing positive longer than the expected 48-h window of detection after admission to the unit. Mean time to last positive after last use of cocaine, known by self-report only, was approximately 81 +/- 34 (34-162) h. Creatinine normalization, with the cut-off of 300 ng BE equivalents/mg creatinine, increased detection time: mean time to first negative specimen was 54.8 +/- 20.7 (20-100) h, and mean time to last positive specimen was 88.4 +/- 51.0 (35.6-235) h. Compared with the concentration in the first void after admission, BE equivalents/creatinine decreased to approximately 56%, 6%, and 5% at 24, 48, and 72 h. However, creatinine normalization did not reduce the fluctuation of BE equivalents across successive specimens. Thus, creatinine normalized values may be useful when the goal is to maximize the probability or duration of cocaine metabolite detection, but may be less useful in determining whether an individual has used cocaine since a previous specimen collection.
Antibodies against oxidized LDL for non-invasive diagnosis of atherosclerotic vascular disease.

Abstract:Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disorder and oxidation of low density lipoproteins (LDL) is thought to play a central role in atherogenesis. Plasma levels of oxidized LDL and malondialdehydemodified LDL (MDA-modified LDL) have been demonstrated to be significantly higher in patients with coronary artery disease. MDA-modified LDL was able to discriminate between patients with acute coronary syndromes and those with stable angina. Oxidation of LDL generates highly immunogenic oxidized phospholipids and proteins. The titre of antibodies against oxidized LDL (anti-oxLDL antibodies) or MDA-modified LDL has been evaluated as a marker or predictor of the extent of atherosclerosis in several studies. In this issue, Monaco et al. describe higher levels of anti-oxLDL antibodies in patients with peripheral artery disease without overt coronary artery disease than in patients with stable or unstable angina free from clinical peripheral vascular disease. The authors demonstrate a significant correlation between the titre of anti-oxLDL antibodies and the number of arterial stenoses above 70% in the overall population and suggest that the greater titre of antibodies in patients with peripheral vascular disease probably reflects the greater atherosclerotic burden in these patients. These data are in line with several, but are inconsistent with other studies. To assess the value of antibodies against oxidized LDL as a potential new tool for non-invasive diagnosis of atherosclerotic vascular disease, it is important to analyse methodological and biological factors, which may underlie the different outcome of these studies. A first explanation for the inconsistency of published results is the lack of standardization of the enzyme immunoassays for the measurement of antibodies against oxidized LDL by different groups. Abstract:This study utilized discarded steel slag (SS) as raw material and prepared modified steel slag materials (SS-SBC, SS-NBC, SS-BHA) through modification with biomass materials such as straw biochar (SBC), nutshell biochar (NBC), and biochemical humic acid (BHA). These materials were then applied for the removal of Pb from both solution and soil. The physical and chemical properties of the materials were analyzed using characterization techniques such as SEM, EDS, XRD, and BET. The specific surface area of the modified materials increased from the original 3.8584 m 2 /g to 34.7133 m 2 /g, 181.7329 m 2 /g, and 7.7384 m 2 /g, respectively. The study then explored the influence of different adsorption conditions on the adsorption capacity of Pb in solution, determining the optimal conditions as follows: initial concentration of 200 mg/L, adsorbent mass of 0.04 g, temperature of 15 °C, and pH = 2. To further investigate the adsorption process, kinetic and isotherm models were established. The results indicated that the adsorption process for all three materials followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Freundlich isotherm model, suggesting a multi-layer chemical adsorption. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that the adsorption process was an exothermic spontaneous reaction. Soil cultivation experiments were conducted to explore the effects of different material addition amounts and cultivation times on the passivation of Pb-polluted soil. Analysis of heavy metal forms in the soil revealed that the addition of modified materials reduced the acid-extractable form of Pb in the soil and increased the residual form, which is beneficial for reducing the migration of Pb in the soil. FT-IR and XPS analyses were employed to study the functional groups, element composition, and valence states before and after adsorption passivation of Pb by the three materials. The results confirmed that the adsorption mechanisms of SS-SBC, SS-NBC, and SS-BHA mainly involved electrostatic adsorption, ion and ligand exchange, and surface precipitation. This study not only provides a new material for adsorbing and immobilizing heavy metals in soil and water but also offers a new approach for the resource utilization of steel slag waste.

While the preventive measures of environmental pollution lie in the awareness of mankind, eliminating the interfering consequences of pollutants that have already been released into the environment is the current challenge. The present work, therefore, aimed to determine the phytoremediation potential of Catharanthus roseus based on contamination indices. The metal concentrations in soil and plant were assessed using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry and Inductively Coupled Plasma -Mass Spectrophotometry. The results showed that C. roseus acted as a good tool in remediating industrially contaminated soils. Plants grown under metal stress showed enhanced antioxidant potential. Further, the plant exhibited increased chlorophyll, pectin and lignin content in response to heavy metals, suggesting significant relation between plant metabolism and mental stress. Phytoremediation using plants like C. roseus therefore, can be esthetically pleasing and more publicly acceptable than the disruptive physical and chemical processes currently in use. The present study was undertaken for the first time to evaluate the potential of Catharanthus roseus to remediate the industrially contaminated soils of Visakhapatnam city. Plant responses to heavy metals were analyzed based on the alterations in antioxidant potential, lignin and pectin content of plants grown in these soils.

Abstract:In the pursuit of sustainable solutions for carbon dioxide CO2 sequestration and emission reduction in the steel industry, this study presents an innovative integration of steelmaking slag with the modified Solvay process for sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) synthesis from saline brines. Utilizing diverse minerals, including electric arc furnace (EAF) slag, olivine, and kimberlite, the study explored their reactivity under varied pH conditions and examined their potential in ammonium regeneration. SEM and WDXRF analyses were utilized to acquire morphological and chemical compositions of the minerals. Advanced techniques such as XRD and ICP-OES were employed to meticulously analyze mineralogical transformations and elemental concentrations. The findings demonstrate that steelmaking slag, owing to its superior reactivity and pH buffering capabilities, outperforms natural minerals. The integration of finer slag particles significantly elevated pH levels, facilitating efficient ammonium regeneration. Geochemical modeling provided valuable insights into mineral stability and reactivity, which aligned with the ICP-OES results. This synergistic approach not only aids in CO2 capture through mineral carbonation but also minimizes waste, showcasing its potential as a sustainable and environmentally responsible solution for CO2 mitigation in the steel industry.

Abstract:It is the first time ionic liquid was applied to gas solvent sublation, which established a new method for separation/enrichment of tetracyclines (TCs) antibiotic based on ionic liquid gas solvent sublation. The optimizing experimental conditions were as follows: the mixture of ionic liquid 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazo lium hexafluorophosphats and ethyl acetate ([Hmim] PF6-EA, phi = 1/0.9) can be used as flotation solvent, Fe(III) ion was as trapping agent, pH of test solution was 7.6, the gas flow rate was 40 mL x min(-1), and the flotation time was 50 min. The complexes of TCs- Fe (III) were pre-concentrated in the [Hmim] PF6-EA layer and this was used to determine analytes by fluorescence method directly. The linear regression equation was F = 246.5c+4.32 (c: microg x 10 mL(-1)), and correlation coefficient was 0.999 1. Recoveries between 94.2% and 100.4% were achieved from surface water and sediment samples in ponder by using this method and the relative standard deviation of 5 microg x mL(-1) TCs for 5 parallel determinations was less than 3.2%. FTIR spectroscopy demonstrated that no chemical (bonding) interactions occurred between the ionic liquid and the complexes functional groups, and the ionic liquid was only solvent. The experimental result indicated that utilizing ionic liquid to float TCs in environmental sample is feasible.

Abstract:Among CO2 fixation technologies, ex situ carbon mineralization using steel slag is a promising option since it produces thermodynamically stable solid carbonates. The utilization of carbonates produced using captured CO2 can allow a new circular economy of carbon. Volatile organic acids (VOAs), which are produced in the anaerobic digestion of biogenic wastes, have recently received significant attention as promising intermediates in biorefinery and another circular economy of a waste stream. This study explored the integration of two circular economies of wastes by investigating the leaching behaviors of steel slag in the presence of biogenic waste-originated organic acids–acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid, valeric acid, and their mixtures. The organic acids were more efficient in the elemental extraction from steel slag than strong acids. Furthermore, their mixture showed the highest extraction efficiency for all elements, illustrating the synergetic effect of ligands with different sizes and stability constants. These findings demonstrate that organic acids obtained from the biogenic wastes can be directly employed for the extraction step of an ex situ carbon mineralization process without separation or purification steps.
