Interface 12, 20150037 (2015; Published online 1 April 2015) (doi:10.1098/rsif.2015.0037) In our original manuscript [1], we made an erroneous claim about the general properties of Galton–Watson (GW) processes, based on a misreading of the literature. We claimed that The Kesten–Stigum theorem states that for any GW process, the distribution of the number of nodes converges to an exponential distribution, conditional on the tree not becoming extinct. In fact the Kesten–Stigum theorem [2] only states that the number of nodes will converge to some random variable, the distribution of which depends on the choice of offspring distribution. This random variable has a mean of ζh, where ζ is the mean offspring per node and h is the number of generations. Therefore, equation (3.2) in the original manuscript, and the results derived from it, hold in the reduced set of cases where the number of leaves in the tree of potential future choices converges to an exponential distribution. Though we cannot delimit all processes where this applies, there are two special cases with particular relevance to our manuscript: — For a GW process where the number of offspring to any node is geometrically distributed (either single parameter or zero-modified), the number of leaves at generation h will also be geometrically distributed [3], and can be well approximated by an exponential distribution for large h. The geometric distribution is the maximum entropy distribution over the integers with a known mean and therefore a natural choice when considering a process with a fixed mean number of offspring in the absence of other information. — As stated in the original manuscript, the continuous time Yule process also converges to an exponential distribution at long time horizons. Readers should therefore be aware that the derivations of collective and social behaviours described in the manuscript are valid within this bound. Alternative choices of GW or other branching process specifications will potentially result in different collective and individual behaviour predictions.
Quality evaluation and health risk assessment of drinking water in Minab County: hydrochemical analysis and artificial neural network modeling

Abstract:In many regions, access to clean and safe drinking water remains a critical concern due to the potential health risks associated with water contamination. Thus, this study focused on assessing the water quality and associated health risks of drinking water in Minab County, located within Hormozgan Province. The computed WQI values were between 27.5 and 105 with the average of 60.5 in this study, where fluoride had the most significant impact. In the probabilistic approach, approximately 50% of the collected samples showed very good water quality, while less than 0.03% was classified as poor quality. Furthermore, to evaluate the effect of different input parameters on the precision of an artificial neural network (ANN) model for the prediction of F concentration in the water, a sensitive analysis was performed. The dominant water compositions in this area consisted of Na–K–Cl and Na–K–HCO3 types. The results showed that the average values of hazard quotient (HQ) for all the pollutants in all age groups were below 1. Moreover, the non-carcinogenic risk according to the health risk assessment in children was higher than adults and teenagers. The Sobol analysis results indicated that the nitrate concentration ( C W ) in children, teenagers and adults and water intake rate in infants were the most sensitive parameters. Based on the results, chloride, NO 3 , and TH had the most significant effects as independent variables on the determination of F concentration in water, as determined by the sensitivity analysis. Therefore, it is necessary to implement a comprehensive management program for water resources aimed at reducing non-carcinogenic pollutants and improving the quality of drinking water for the local population.

A Systematic Review on Fluoride Contamination in Water Resources of Iran from 2016 to 2023: Spatial Distribution and Probabilistic Risk Assessment (Monte Carlo Simulation)

Abstract:Because of significant variations and existence of high fluoride (F-) in some waters, Iran has been considered for various fluoride studies in recent decades. Nevertheless, there is a no updated review on fluoride levels especially including F- risk assessment. Thus, this systematic review is mainly aimed to evaluate the spatial distribution of F- content in water sources of Iran using geographic information system (GIS) and conduct the health risk assessment. Besides, the Monte-Carlo Simulation technique with 10,000 iterations was applied for determination of the non-carcinogenic effects of F- in different exposed groups (infant, children, teenagers, and adults). The results indicated that the maximum and minimum concentrations of F- content were related to Jazmourian (Roudbar plain) (4.8 mg/L) and Sahneh (0.1 mg/L) provinces, respectively, and F- content of more than ≅ 19% of the samples exceeds the Iranian standard value (1.5 mg/L). The results showed that the HQ of F- in all groups were higher than 1 with the order of children > infants > teenager > adults in which children were the vulnerable group to F- consumption in study area. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor and continuously measure water supplies for fluoride content and control measures, including removal steps, be taken for human risk reduction.
Evaluation of fluoride exposure using disability-adjusted life years and health risk assessment in south-western Iran: A novel Monte Carlo simulation

Abstract:Consumption of fluoride-contaminated water is a worldwide concern, especially in developing countries, including Iran. However, there are restricted studies of non-single-value health risk assessment and the disease burden regarding fluoride intake nationwide. Prolonged exposure to excessive fluoride has been linked to adverse health effects such as dental and skeletal fluorosis. This can lead to under-mineralization of hard tissues, causing aesthetic concerns for teeth and changes in bone structure, increasing the risk of fractures. As such, we aimed to implement probability-based frameworks using Monte Carlo methods to explore the potential adverse effects of fluoride via the ingestion route. This platform consists of two sectors: 1) health risk assessment of various age categories coupled with a variance decomposition technique to measure the contributions of predictor variables in the outcome of the health risk model, and 2) implementing Monte Carlo methods in dose-response curves to explore the fluoride-induced burden of diseases of dental fluorosis and skeletal fractures in terms of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). For this purpose, total water samples of 8053 (N=8053) from 57 sites were analyzed in Fars and Bushehr Provinces. The mean fluoride concentrations were 0.75 mg/L and 1.09 mg/L, with maximum fluoride contents of 6.5 mg/L and 3.22 mg/L for the Fars and Bushehr provinces, respectively. The hazard quotient of the 95th percentile (HQ>1) revealed that all infants and children in the study area were potentially vulnerable to over-receiving fluoride. Sobol' sensitivity analysis indices, including first-order, second-order, and total order, disclosed that fluoride concentration (Cw), ingestion rate (IRw), and their mutual interactions were the most influential factors in the health risk model. DALYs rate of dental fluorosis was as high as 981.45 (uncertainty interval: UI 95 % 353.23-1618.40) in Lamerd, and maximum DALYs of skeletal fractures occurred in Mohr 71.61(49.75-92.71), in Fars Province, indicated severe dental fluorosis but mild hazard regarding fractures. Residents of the Tang-e Eram in Bushehr Province with a DALYs rate of 3609.40 (1296.68-5993.73) for dental fluorosis and a DALYs rate of 284.67 (199.11-367.99) for skeletal fractures were the most potentially endangered population. By evaluating the outputs of the DALYs model, the gap in scenarios of central tendency exposure and reasonable maximum exposure highlights the role of food source intake in over-receiving fluoride. This research insists on implementing defluoridation programs in fluoride-endemic zones to combat the undesirable effects of fluoride. The global measures presented in this research aim to address the root causes of contamination and help policymakers and authorities mitigate fluoride's harmful impacts on the environment and public health.

Abstract:Herein, the health risk assessment of exposure to fluoride in drinking water of southern province of Iran was performed with a definite and probabilistic approach. The Monte-Carlo simulation and sensitivity analysis were used to explain the impact of risk and uncertainty upon estimations. The results indicated that fluoride concentration was in the range of 0.1–0.9 mg/L with an average of 0.454 ± 0.205 mg/L, and distribution function followed the normality. Moreover, the highest fluoride concentration was observed in the central and northern regions of the province. In the definitive method, hazard quotient (HQ) associated with fluoride in drinking water were lower than 1 (HQ < 1). Conducting Monte-Carlo simulation illustrated that the potential non-carcinogenic risk for children in the 95th percentile exceeded the safe limit of 1, indicating a potential non-carcinogenic in this age group. Sensitivity analysis showed that fluoride concentration and water consumption rate had the most effect in the model. Therefore, consumption of water and foods containing fluoride along with excessive consumption of tea could increase the risk for human health. The results suggested that a continuous monitoring of fluoride in water resources besides proper dietary regime for inhabitants of this province should be taken into consideration.

Abstract:Groundwater is one of the most important sources of drinking and irrigation water in arid and semi-arid areas. This study aimed to investigate the chemical quality of groundwater for drinking and irrigation, assess the non-carcinogenic risk factors resulting from the concentration of fluoride and nitrate ions, and analyze the sensitivity among children, teenagers, and adults using Monte Carlo method. A total of 171 samples were obtained from confined groundwater in Arsanjan. Among other hydrological parameters of water, EC had the highest average (1135.97). TDS ranged from 67.90 to 1878.30 mg/L, with the lowest and highest total hardness values being 2.90 and 680.8, respectively. The water quality index (WQI) results indicated that 33% of the samples were at the poor water level and the irrigation (IWQI) was less than 25 in 96.36% of the samples, which were categorized as excellent. Thus, the majority of the samples were suitable for irrigation purposes. Additionally, the oral and dermal health risks of fluoride and nitrate were less than 1 in all age groups. Concentration factor was the main indicator in the assessment of the non-carcinogenic risk factors of nitrate and fluoride. The results of sensitivity analysis revealed a reverse relationship with body weight. Further, the results of principal component analysis (PCA) showed a negative relationship between fluoride concentration and pH. Hierarchical cluster analysis also showed that the study variables belonged to three main clusters. Some elements in C1 were also found in the first factor in PCA. The elements in C2 were among the dominant compounds of the groundwater resources of the study area, which may be caused by earth cations or human activities. C3 variables may also be one of the consequences of fertilizer use in areas around groundwater sources.

Abstract:The quality of water resources used for drinking and their health effects is vitally important. The present study investigated the concentrations of F-, NO3-, and metal elements like Hg, Mn, As, and Pb in the groundwater resources and their health risk assessment on the west margin of Urmia Lake, Iran. Sampling points were selected and taken from 121 groundwater resources in the summer of 2014. Heavy metals (Pb, As, Mn, and Hg) were measured by ICP-OES (inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer, model: Arcos, Germany), and some ions (Na+, NO3-, F-, and Cl-) by flame photometer and spectrophotometer according to the standard methods, respectively. The nitrate concentration range in groundwater samples measured from 1.7 to 137 mg/L and fluoride from 0.4 to 4.5 mg/L. The probabilistic method and Monte Carlo simulation were used to estimate carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic risks. The concentration of study elements in most samples was obtained in the WHO (World Health Organization) recommended range. The order of HM (heavy metal) concentration is based on the overall mean: Mn > As > Hg > Pb. The HI (hazard index ) level was found to be more than 1 for noncarcinogenic risk for As and NO3- and permissible risks for the other elements and fluoride. ELCR (excess lifetime cancer risk) levels of As were acceptable, except for some sampling points, the central region in the study area, near the seashore of Urmia Lake. Finally, it can be stated that the groundwater resources in the studied area are acceptable for drinking in most places. Still, due to the effects of As and NO3- contaminated water, the quality is unacceptable for drinking in some places. So, monitoring water quality is recommended by finding contamination sources to decrease the health risks of drinking consumption.
Assessment of drinking water quality and identifying pollution sources in a chromite mining region

Abstract:Water sources near mining regions are often susceptible to contamination from toxic elements. This study employs machine learning (ML) techniques to evaluate drinking water quality and identify pollution sources near a chromite mine in Iran. Human health risks were assessed using both deterministic and probabilistic approaches. Findings revealed that concentrations of calcium (Ca), chromium (Cr), lithium (Li), magnesium (Mg), and sodium (Na) in the water samples exceeded international safety standards. The Unweighted Root Mean Square water quality index (RMS-WQI) and Weighted Quadratic Mean (WQM-WQI) categorized all water samples as 'Fair', with average scores of 67.95 and 67.19, respectively. Of the ML models tested, the Extra Trees (ET) algorithm emerged as the top predictor of WQI, with Mg and strontium (Sr) as key variables influencing the scores. Principal component analysis (PCA) identified three distinct clusters of water quality parameters, highlighting influences from both local geology and anthropogenic activities. The highest average hazard quotient (HQ) for Cr was 1.71 for children, 1.27 for adolescents, and 1.05 for adults. Monte Carlo simulation for health risk assessment indicated median hazard index (HI) of 4.48 for children, 3.58 for teenagers, and 2.98 for adults, all exceeding the acceptable threshold of 1. Total carcinogenic risk (TCR) exceeded the EPA's acceptable level for 99.38 % of children, 98.24 % of teenagers, and 100 % of adults, with arsenic (As) and Cr identified as the main contributors. The study highlights the need for urgent mitigation measures, recommending a 99 % reduction in concentrations of key contaminants to lower both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks to acceptable levels.

Abstract:The purpose of this retrospective study was to assess the change that occurred in the quality of 34 groundwater resources within 10 years from 2011 to 2020 using multivariate statistical methods of ArcView GIS, water quality index (WQI), hierarchical cluster analyses (HCA), and hazard quotient (HQ) and also Monte Carlo simulation and sensitivity analyses to estimate the health risk raised by nitrate and fluoride. Our finding showed that the mean and standard deviation of measured parameters, including pH, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solid, color, calcium, magnesium, sodium, fluoride, chloride, nitrate, sulfate, bicarbonate, and total hardness, were 7.15 ± 0.13, 883 ± 320 (μS/cm), 378 ± 123 (mg/l), 3.86 ± 4.79 (TCU), 95 ± 21 (mg/l), 30 ± 8 (mg/l), 36 ± 13 (mg/l), 0.43 ± 0.14 (mg/l), 37.6 ± 19 (mg/l), 3.4 ± 1.5 (mg/l), 44 ± 10.3 (mg/l), 453 ± 124 (mg/l), and 360 ± 66 (mg/l). This result illustrates that the WQI ranged from 49.91 to 107.38, and the water quality was excellent, good, and weak in 11.7%, 74.6%, and 14.7% of samples, respectively. According to the WQI map, the unfavorable groundwater resource was located in areas with a high groundwater level and salty soil. The land use results showed that in areas with residential density, the concentration of nitrates was higher, as a result of which the risk index increased from 2011 to 2021. HQ analysis showed that fluoride and nitrate contents were below the risk limit (HQ < 1); however, HQ of fluoride was more than 1 infant group in 18.4% and 7.9% of samples in the wet season and warm season, respectively; consequently, care is needed to predict the changes in water quality.

Abstract:During farming practices in rural areas, various fertilizers are used, which can lead to the contamination of groundwater resources with nitrate and, consequently, can affect the health of consumers. This study aimed to investigate the drinking suitability of the groundwater resources in rural areas of Divandarreh County, Kurdistan province, Iran using drinking water quality index (DWQI) and also estimation of the non-carcinogenic health risk induced by nitrate due to the drinking route. Sixty groundwater samples collected (2018) from active dug-wells and twelve parameters (TDS, pH, TH, EC, HCO3−, K+, Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Cl−, SO42-, and NO3−) were measured to calculate DWQI. Also, non-carcinogenic risk assessment was carried out for four exposed groupsusing two different approaches: deterministic andprobabilistic by Monte Carlo simulation.The results of WQI showed that 61.66, 31.66, and 6.66% of samples fall within the class of excellent, good, and poor quality, respectively. The nitrate concentration in drinking water ranged from 36.06 ± 14.32 mg/L. The HQ mean for infants, children, teenagers, and adults were 0.90158, 1.17205, 0.90158, and 0.70436, respectively.Probability estimation showed the HQ values for the 5th, and 95th percentile in infants, children, teenagers, and adult groups were (0.52–2.53), (0.27–1.54), (0.25–1.40), and (0.15–0.71), respectively. Sensitivity analysis results showed that the most effective parameter in the non-carcinogenic risk in all exposed groups was NO3− concentration. Generally, nitrate concentration was relatively high and required more attention especially in agriculture and management of the use of fertilisers.

Abstract:Bottled water use has become widespread in recent years. Many Iranian cities are located in regions with a hot and semi-hot climate, and the quality of drinking water is low in most of these areas. Nitrate and fluoride are chemical constituents of drinking water with significant health concerns since they can be harmful in concentrations higher than drinking water standards. This study aims to determine nitrate and fluoride concentrations in different bottled water brands in the study region; evaluate the non-carcinogenic health risks posed by nitrate and fluoride exposure via the ingestion of bottled water; and compare the measured nitrate and fluoride concentrations with the amounts reported on the bottle labels. Twenty bottled water brands were sampled, and their nitrate and fluoride amounts were determined using the spectrophotometry method. The results revealed that 100% of nitrate and 70% of fluoride in samples had concentrations greater than the levels reported on bottle labels. Minimum, maximum, and mean concentrations for nitrate were, respectively, 1.1, 28, and 8.37 mg/L, and for fluoride were 0.014, 2.36, and 0.63 mg/L. The hazard quotient (HQ) values due to nitrate intake were > 1 in 10% of the samples (n = 2) for both infants and children, indicating potential adverse non-carcinogenic health effects upon consumption. For fluoride intake, the potential adverse health effects (HQ > 1) for infants, children, teenagers, and adults were respectively high in 30, 20, 10, and 10% of the samples. For nitrate, the 95th centile for infants was 1.547, and for fluoride, it was 2.62, 2.19, 1.15, and 1 for infants, children, teenagers, and adults, respectively.

Abstract:Rapid urbanization, population growth, agricultural practices, and industrial activities have led to widespread groundwater contamination. This study evaluated heavy metal contamination in residential drinking water in Shiraz, Iran (2021). The analysis involved 80 groundwater samples collected across wet and dry seasons. Water quality was comprehensively assessed using several indices, including the heavy metals evaluation index (HEI), heavy metal pollution index (HPI), contamination degree (CD), and metal index (MI). Carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk assessments were conducted using deterministic and probabilistic approaches for exposed populations. In the non-carcinogenic risk assessment, the chronic daily intake (CDI), hazard quotient (HQ), and hazard index (HI) are employed. The precision of risk assessment was bolstered through the utilization of Monte Carlo simulation, executed using the R software platform. Based on the results, in both wet and dry seasons, Zinc (Zn) consistently demonstrates the highest mean concentration, followed by Manganese (Mn) and Chromium (Cr). During the wet and dry seasons, 25% and 40% of the regions exhibited high CD, respectively. According to non-carcinogenic risk assessment, Cr presents the highest CDI and HQ in children and adults, followed by Mn, As and HI values, indicating elevated risk for children. The highest carcinogenic risk was for Cr in adults, while the lowest was for Cd in children. The sensitivity analysis found that heavy metal concentration and ingestion rate significantly impact both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks. These findings provide critical insights for shaping policy and allocating resources towards effectively managing heavy metal contamination in residential drinking water.

Pesticide residues in drinking water treatment plants and human health risk assessment: a case study from Northern Iran

Abstract:These days, the presence of pesticide residues in drinking water sources is a serious concern. In drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs), various methods have been proposed to remove pesticide residues. This study was designed with the objectives of monitoring the occurrence and seasonal variations of pesticides in the output of drinking water treatment plants in two Northern provinces of Iran, Gilan and Golestan, and identifying their human health risks. Seventeen pesticide residues from different chemical structures were determined by using a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GC–MS). The results showed that only Alachlor, Diazinon, Fenitrothion, Malathion, and Chlorpyrifos were detected. The pesticide concentrations ranged from ND to 405.3 ng/L and were higher in the first half-year period. The total non-carcinogenic human health risks was in safe range for infants, children, and adults (HI < 1). The carcinogenic human health risks of Alachlor for infants, children, and adults were in the range of 4.3 × 10 –7 to 1.3 × 10 –6 , 2.0 × 10 –7 to 9.6 × 10 –7 , and 1.1 × 10 –7 to 5.5 × 10 –7 , respectively. These values do not pose health risks for adults and children, but may present a possible cancer risk for infants in two DWTPs of Golestan. In conclusion, considering the possibility of exposure to these pesticides through other routes, simultaneously, it is suggested to carry out a study that examines the level of risk by considering all exposure routes. We also propose stricter regulations for the sale and use of pesticides in Iran.

Abstract:The study focuses on assessing groundwater quality, with a special emphasis on fluoride contamination, in the Muktsar, Bathinda, and Moga of Punjab, India. Groundwater being a crucial resource for the region, faces contamination from both natural processes and anthropogenic activities. The study employs advanced techniques, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and machine learning models to predict fluoride contamination and assess the water quality index (WQI). The groundwater samples were systematically collected from 281 locations using GIS at approximately 5 km distance to ensure uniform distribution. The study aims to predict fluoride levels, various hydrochemical parameters and WQI to identify high-risk areas. Using Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW), the distribution of fluoride level and WQI was mapped, revealing varying concentrations across the study area. From the study, the Random Forest (RF) model identified key hydrochemical parameters influencing fluoride contamination. The RF model demonstrates high predictive accuracy for fluoride contamination, using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves for validation and yield area under the curve (AUC) values of 82%, 81%, and 94% for Muktsar, Bathinda, and Moga districts, respectively. The novel integration of GIS with machine learning provides a robust framework offering valuable insights for water resource management. The results showed significant fluoride contamination in many areas, posing serious health risks like dental and skeletal fluorosis. The findings highlight the importance of addressing both natural and human-induced factors in managing groundwater quality, ensuring safe drinking water, and protecting public health in affected regions.

Abstract:Groundwater quality is a critical concern for human health, particularly in urban areas like the eastern part of Tehran Plain, where geological features and anthropogenic activities contribute to contamination risks. This study aimed to assess the quality of groundwater in this region, focusing on its implications for public health. The objectives of the study were to identify factors influencing hydrogeochemistry, evaluate environmental risk based on metal(loid)s using water quality indices, and conduct a health risk assessment. Groundwater samples were collected and analyzed for chemistry, water quality, heavy metal contamination, and associated health risks. The results indicated a relatively stable pH condition and a wide variation in the concentration of dissolved solids. The Water Quality Index (WQI) was employed to evaluate the overall water quality, revealing that approximately 50% of the samples fell into the poor and very poor quality categories, with two samples deemed unsuitable for drinking. Heavy metal contamination varied across different metals, with some indicating low levels while others showed moderate to very high levels. Priority pollutants such as mercury and arsenic were identified as having a greater potential impact on water quality deterioration. Exposure and health risk assessments indicated a negligible risk associated with aluminum exposure but high risks associated with arsenic, chromium, and mercury exposure. Carcinogenic risk assessments for arsenic, chromium, and mercury exceeded acceptable thresholds, emphasizing the urgent need for further investigation into contamination sources and strategies for mitigation. These findings highlight the importance of continuous monitoring and sustainable groundwater management practices, providing valuable insights for other regions facing similar challenges in groundwater quality and public health.

Abstract:The concentrations of arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) and the human health risk of the metals were estimated through drinking water consumption. Totally, 48 samples of groundwater were collected and analyzed during 2019. Health risk indices were estimated using chronic daily intake (CDI), hazard quotient (HQ) and, hazard index (HI), as well as cancer risk (CR). Except for As (66.6% of the areas were above permissible limits), the concentrations of other three heavy metals were within the US EPA and WHO permissible limits. ∑HI values in 100% and 75% of the areas were above 1 for children and adults, implying non-carcinogenic risk from sum of heavy metals. Children total cancer risk (CRt) in all areas (except one area with acceptable risk) fell within unacceptable risk. Adults CRt in all areas (except one area with unacceptable risk) were in acceptable risk category. As was the highest contributor to non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks both for children and adults. Our results showed that children were more exposed to health risks, due to intake of drinking water containing As, Cr, and Pb in the study areas. The study can provide a basis for local governments to properly manage drinking water quality and provide a reference for water quality management in neighborhood areas.

Modeling and prediction of water quality parameters using a hybrid particle swarm optimization–neural fuzzy approach

Abstract:This work focuses on the correlations among water quality parameters such as total hardness, total dissolved solids, electrical conductivity and total alkalinity with water parameters pH, temperature and the sum of mill equivalents of cations and anions in water reservoir in Kermanshah province (located in the middle of the western part of Iran). The data of water quality of monitoring sites were collected over year 2015. To predict and simulate water quality parameters, two data-driven models, i.e., adaptive neural fuzzy inference system and a hybrid adaptive neural fuzzy inference system structure trained by particle swarm optimization technique, were used. The main advantages of these methods are their high accuracy and very fast computational speed to predict unknown data. The results indicated that implementation of two models is highly satisfactory for predicting inorganic indicators of water quality. However, the flexibility of particle swarm optimization–adaptive neural fuzzy inference system method in modeling is better than adaptive neural fuzzy inference system approach. To prove this, the correlation coefficient, mean absolute error, root mean square error and t statistics were calculated as the error criterion. The overall (training and testing) mean relative error percentage, mean absolute error, root mean square error, correlation coefficient and t statistics obtained by the proposed particle swarm optimization–adaptive neural fuzzy inference system model are less than 3.50, 11.60, 18.90, 0.95 and 0.38%, respectively. The results provide a useful approach that uses water parameters to estimate water quality in water reservoir for water treatment and pollution management.

Abstract:Human health is being increasingly exposed to fluoride and nitrate ingestion globally due to anthropogenic alternations in groundwater resources. In the present research work, a hazard quotient (HQ), Monte Carlo simulation (MCS), and geographic information systems (GIS) have been used to estimate the non-carcinogenic health risk of nitrate and fluoride in vulnerable adults, teenagers, and children living in far-flung areas of Uttar Pradesh, Northern India. About 110 samples from some nearby populations were collected and analyzed for nitrates by ion chromatography and fluoride by a fluoride-selective electrode. The results indicated that the concentrations of fluoride and nitrate in the sampling areas ranged from 0.21 to 1.71 mg/L and 0.4-183.54 mg/L, respectively, with mean concentrations of about 1.20 mg/L and 51.52 mg/L for fluoride and nitrate, respectively. The results indicated that 27.27 % of the fluoride samples (27 out of 110) and 45.45 % of the nitrate samples (44 out of 110) were above the standard limits set by WHO. The calculated average HQ values fluoride and Nitrate for children, teenagers and adults were 1.88, 0.98, 0.90 and 3.02, 1.57, 1.45 respectively The 95th percentile HQ values for fluoride were 2.87 for children and 1.03 for adults, while those for nitrate were 4.10 for children and 1.98 for adults. Results of the health risk assessment show that there is a high potential for both non-carcinogenic and cancer risks from fluoride and nitrate through the consumption of groundwater. The Monte Carlo simulation showed the uncertainties and increased risks for children; therefore, one can infer that rural groundwater of the Mathura region, Uttar Pradesh, India, must be treated to make it potable for consumption.

Abstract:Exposure to heavy metals through drinking water can cause significant adverse health effects. The aim of the present study was to investigate the concentration, spatial distribution, and assessment of non-carcinogenic risk attributed to exposure to arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) in rural areas of eight cities of the West Azerbaijan province of Iran. Eighty-five water samples were taken from randomly selected drinking water wells in the rural areas, and the concentration of the heavy metals was measured by using standard methods. The concentration distribution maps were drawn, and the non-carcinogenic health risks for ingestion and dermal exposure pathways were calculated in four age groups (including infants, children, teenagers, and adults). According to the obtained results, arsenic is considered as the most worrying pollutant among the investigated heavy metals. The maximum measured concentration for arsenic was 371.9 μg/L, which is 37 times the maximum permissible limit. The results of the health risk assessment illustrate that exposure to heavy metals via dermal contact do not pose significant non-carcinogenic risks. However, the calculated non-carcinogenic risks for oral exposure to arsenic were very high and concerning. The highest hazard quotient for oral exposure to arsenic was related to rural of city G (82.64). It is recommended to take the necessary measures as soon as possible regarding the supply of safe drinking water in the studied areas.

Abstract:Human activities and climate may have an impact on the water quality of reservoirs. Therefore, the present research aims to use the entropy water quality index assessment technique to analyze the water quality features of the main water supply reservoirs as well as to investigate the effect of water parameters on the water quality of the reservoirs. In this study, the total non-carcinogenic health risks from various exposure paths were estimated for adults and children. The water quality of the major water supply reservoirs in Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province was typically poor and unfit for human consumption. Besides, the non-carcinogenic risk was higher in males (0.958–1.497) and children (1.065–1.664) than in females (0.879–1.374) according to health risk assessments. Among the factors under study, magnesium and nitrate had the highest influence on the non-carcinogenic risk. Finally, the sensitivity of each of the parameters affecting the non-carcinogenic risk was assessed using Sobel sensitivity analysis. The results indicated that the nitrate concentration (Cw) and Ingestion Rate (IR) were the most sensitive in the oral state, while Cw and fraction of skin’s surface area (F) were more sensitive in the dermal state.
