Abstract:The accidental oil spill is one of the most critical disasters in coastal areas and can cause serious damage to the ecosystem and society. Oil spill spreading is a complex process involving the highly nonlinear interaction of two fluids with very different properties. In this study, the Consistent Particle Method (CPM) is enhanced by incorporating the continuum surface force model and applied to simulate oil spill spreading. Firstly, based on a circular ring case, the advantage of CPM in computing the curvature of an interface (key in simulating the interfacial tension force) is demonstrated, and the influence of the smoothing length in curvature calculation is tested as well. Secondly, the capability of the CPM model in capturing the interfacial tension force is validated by the case of two-dimensional droplet deformation. Finally, the benchmark examples, namely, oil slick spreading in a reservoir and oil spill from a damaged tank, are studied by the enhanced CPM model. The influence of adding the surface tension model in the simulation is examined. The morphological and kinematic properties of the oil spill process are discussed.

Abstract:Currently, mixing hydrogen into natural gas networks is the most cost-effective method for transporting significant quantities of hydrogen over long distances. However, after mixing natural gas with hydrogen, the properties of the mixed gas will change significantly, manifested as faster diffusion rate, increased combustion rate, and wider flammability limit. In this paper, a CFD numerical simulation method is used to establish a numerical model for the leakage and diffusion of buried hydrogen-blended natural gas (HBNG) pipelines, and the concentration diffusion trend and velocity flow field distribution of HBNG in soil under different leakage conditions are studied, as well as the alarm time when HBNG diffusion reaches the lower flammability limit (LFL) at the ground surface. At the same time, the effects of hydrogen blending ratio (HBR), pipeline operating pressure, soil porosity and leakage diameter on HBNG leakage and diffusion are investigated. The simulation results indicate that increasing the HBR will increase the diffusion rate of the mixed gas and reduce the LFL, resulting in a decrease of the alarm time. The increase of pipeline operating pressure and leakage diameter will increase the mass flow rate, and the increase of soil porosity will reduce the resistance when HBNG spreads in the soil. All three cases will significantly reduce the alarm time. The results of this study will provide some references for the emergency response work of buried pipeline leakage and the risk assessment of HBNG leakage and explosion.

Abstract:Fluid motion can be considered as a point cloud transformation when using the SPH method. Compared to traditional numerical analysis methods, using machine learning techniques to learn physics simulations can achieve near-accurate results, while significantly increasing efficiency. In this paper, we propose an innovative approach for 3D fluid simulations utilizing an Attention-based Dual-pipeline Network, which employs a dual-pipeline architecture, seamlessly integrated with an Attention-based Feature Fusion Module. Unlike previous methods, which often make difficult trade-offs between global fluid control and physical law constraints, we find a way to achieve a better balance between these two crucial aspects with a well-designed dual-pipeline approach. Additionally, we design a Type-aware Input Module to adaptively recognize particles of different types and perform feature fusion afterward, such that fluid-solid coupling issues can be better dealt with. Furthermore, we propose a new dataset, Tank3D, to further explore the network's ability to handle more complicated scenes. The experiments demonstrate that our approach not only attains a quantitative enhancement in various metrics, surpassing the state-of-the-art methods, but also signifies a qualitative leap in neural network-based simulation by faithfully adhering to the physical laws. Abstract:In order to achieve the prediction and early warning of city gas pipe network leakage accidents, as well as to provide rapid and precise support for emergency response to such accidents, this study focuses on a Gaussian diffusion model applied to a large urban gas pipeline network. Specifically, it investigates the gas gate wells, which are key nodes in the pipeline network, to develop a leakage model. The objective is to analyze the variation in internal gas concentration in the gate wells and determine the range of danger posed by external gas diffusion from the gate wells. In addition, Fluent simulation is utilized to compare the accuracy of the model's calculations. The findings of this study indicate that the gas concentration inside the gate well, as predicted by the model fitting results and Fluent simulation, exhibit a high level of agreement, with coefficient of determination (R2) values exceeding 0.99. Moreover, when predicting the hazardous distance of gas leakage outside the gate well, the model's results show an average relative error of 0.15 compared to the Fluent simulation results. This demonstrates that the model is highly accurate and meets the practical application requirements.

Abstract:PurposeThe purpose of this study is to advance the computational modeling of liquid splashing dynamics, while balancing simulation accuracy and computational efficiency, a duality often compromised in high-fidelity fluid dynamics simulations.Design/methodology/approachThis study introduces the fluid efficient graph neural network simulator (FEGNS), an innovative framework that integrates an adaptive filtering layer and aggregator fusion strategy within a graph neural network architecture. FEGNS is designed to directly learn from extensive liquid splash data sets, capturing the intricate dynamics and intrinsically complex interactions.FindingsFEGNS achieves a remarkable 30.3% improvement in simulation accuracy over traditional methods, coupled with a 51.6% enhancement in computational speed. It exhibits robust generalization capabilities across diverse materials, enabling realistic simulations of droplet effects. Comparative analyses and empirical validations demonstrate FEGNS's superior performance against existing benchmark models.Originality/valueThe originality of FEGNS lies in its adaptive filtering layer, which independently adjusts filtering weights per node, and a novel aggregator fusion strategy that enriches the network's expressive power by combining multiple aggregation functions. Deep Learning Based Hydraulic-mechanical Simulation of Petroleum Reservoirs

Abstract:Abstract Knowing that accurate yet time-efficient multihpysical reservoir simulation is a major challenge, we have developed a deep neural network (DNN) based multiphysical simulator to acceletate the geomechanical calculation. We first generated 20,000 pressure -stress pairs by conducting regious multiphysical simulation with various mechanical properties using a full physics reservoir simulator. All data pairs are simulated by 128 *128 grid blocks. We then developed a U-Net network, a proven structure in image segmentation based on convolutional neural network (CNN), and trained the network with the generated data using Tensorflow. The U-Net network takes the pressure field as the input and regresses the stress field in a pixel-to-pixel manner. The model is trained with 100 epochs using Adam optimizer with a learning rate of 0.001 on GPU. The trained network is thereafter deployed in the reservoir simulator to predict the stress field from numerically solved pressure field at time step level. Hence the geomechanical simulation is replaced by the DNN proxy. Our results show that the accuracy of the U-Net network is above 97%, in the metric of mean square error. Moreover, the U-Net network possesses excellent capability for dimension generalization. With the implementation of the proxy DNN simulator, the simulation time spent in the geomechanical module has been reduced by more than 95% on a 256*256 case study. The novelty of our work lies in the pioneering application of DNN method to train and predict the time-dependent stress field, avoiding the curse of dimensionality. Our trained model can be conveniently connected with an existing reservoir simulator, which greatly saves the efforts of code development.
A Knowledge-Inspired Hierarchical Physics-Informed Neural Network for Pipeline Hydraulic Transient Simulation

Abstract:The high-pressure transportation process of pipeline necessitates an accurate hydraulic transient simulation tool to prevent slack line flow and over-pressure, which can endanger pipeline operations. However, current numerical solution methods often face difficulties in balancing computational efficiency and accuracy. Additionally, few studies attempt to reform physics-informed learning architecture for pipeline transient simulation with magnitude different in outputs and imbalanced gradient in loss function. To address these challenges, a Knowledge-Inspired Hierarchical Physics-Informed Neural Network is proposed for hydraulic transient simulation of multi-product pipelines. The proposed model integrates governing equations, boundary conditions, and initial conditions into the training process to ensure consistency with physical laws. Furthermore, magnitude conversion of outputs and equivalent conversion of governing equations are implemented to enhance the training performance of the neural network. To further address the imbalanced gradient of multiple loss terms with fixed weights, a hierarchical training strategy is designed. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the proposed model outperforms state-of-the-art models and can still produce accurate simulation results under complex hydraulic transient conditions, with mean absolute percentage errors reduced by 87.8\% and 92.7 \% in pressure prediction. Thus, the proposed model can conduct accurate and effective hydraulic transient analysis, ensuring the safe operation of pipelines.

Hydrogen jet diffusion modeling by using physics-informed graph neural network and sparsely-distributed sensor data

Abstract:Efficient modeling of jet diffusion during accidental release is critical for operation and maintenance management of hydrogen facilities. Deep learning has proven effective for concentration prediction in gas jet diffusion scenarios. Nonetheless, its reliance on extensive simulations as training data and its potential disregard for physical laws limit its applicability to unseen accidental scenarios. Recently, physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) have emerged to reconstruct spatial information by using data from sparsely-distributed sensors which are easily collected in real-world applications. However, prevailing approaches use the fully-connected neural network as the backbone without considering the spatial dependency of sensor data, which reduces the accuracy of concentration prediction. This study introduces the physics-informed graph deep learning approach (Physic_GNN) for efficient and accurate hydrogen jet diffusion prediction by using sparsely-distributed sensor data. Graph neural network (GNN) is used to model the spatial dependency of such sensor data by using graph nodes at which governing equations describing the physical law of hydrogen jet diffusion are immediately solved. The computed residuals are then applied to constrain the training process. Public experimental data of hydrogen jet is used to compare the accuracy and efficiency between our proposed approach Physic_GNN and state-of-the-art PINN. The results demonstrate our Physic_GNN exhibits higher accuracy and physical consistency of centerline concentration prediction given sparse concentration compared to PINN and more efficient compared to OpenFOAM. The proposed approach enables accurate and robust real-time spatial consequence reconstruction and underlying physical mechanisms analysis by using sparse sensor data.

Numerical analysis of dispersion characteristics of underwater gas-oil two-phase leakage process

Abstract:Fatigue failure, third-party destruction and internal corrosion may easily trigger gas and oil leakage during the operation of submarine multiphase pipelines. In order to analyze the underwater gas-oil plume development and migration law, a 3D model based on coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian numerical approach is proposed. The model is validated by laboratory experiment and the dynamic dispersion process of gas-oil plume in a large scale shallow sea environmental is further explored. Influencing factors such as leak location, leak size and water depth, flow pattern are investigated. The simulated results show that leak location affects the gas-oil plume migration behaviors by influencing the leakage amount. Water depth significantly affects gas-oil migration and the separation of gas plume and oil plume is gradually apparent as water depth increases. This study fills in the gap of ignoring the influence of flow pattern previously and is expected to help build more accurate emergency response guidelines.

Abstract:The process of liquid spread and the process of evaporation and diffusion were combined together by the law of conservation of mass. The dynamic evaporation and diffusion model of petrol is proposed. The Stam method can used to simulate the gas diffusion, but it has the shortcoming of large numerical dissipation and it can't perform the detail of diffusion process. To overcome the disadvantage of Stam method, an improved Stam method is proposed by introducing an error compensation factor. Based on the dynamic evaporation and diffusion, the leakage and diffusion processes are simulated real time by using improved Stam method.

Abstract:The simulation and prediction of fluid flow in porous media play a profoundly significant role in today's scientific and engineering domains, particularly in gaining a deeper understanding of phenomena such as the migration and fluid flow in underground rock formations and the enhancement of oil recovery rates. The flow of fluids in nanoscale porous media requires consideration of the effects of microscale phenomena, which are challenging to accurately describe using traditional physical models. Currently, research in deep learning for porous media predominantly focuses on conventional porous media, and there is an urgent need for investigations into heterogeneous nanoporous media. Simultaneously, there is a necessity to overcome the limitations of traditional data-driven models lacking physical prior knowledge. Therefore, the integration of physics-informed neural networks, which combine deep learning with physical principles, becomes essential for inferring relatively accurate results from sparse data. In this work, based on the heterogeneity of porous media in shale, we have introduced a deep learning model that couples physical information to predict the flow in heterogeneous nanoscale porous media. In the Physical Information Neural Network model, we utilize point clouds and couple them with deep residual networks. Discrete sampling points are used as inputs, and a multi-level residual connection, along with dimension concatenation, is employed to fuse feature information. The network, through backpropagation, takes into account the Navier-Stokes equations and wall conditions in heterogeneous nanoscale porous media. The results indicate that the apparent permeability and pressure field accuracy are over 90% and 95%, respectively. The Physical Information Neural Network demonstrates promising prospects for predicting flow in nanoscale porous media. Future work will extend to the multiphase complex flow in three-dimensional porous media.

Abstract:Abstract Efficient and accurate evaluation of capillary pressure and relative permeability of oil–water flow in tight sandstone with limited routinely obtainable parameters is a crucial problem in tight oil reservoir modeling and petroleum engineering. Due to the multiscale pore structure, there is complex nonlinear multiphase flow in tight sandstone. Additionally, wetting behavior caused by mineral components remarkably influences oil–water displacement in multiscale pores. All this makes predicting capillary pressure and relative permeability in tight sandstone extremely difficult. This paper proposes a physics-informed neural network, integrating five important physical models, the improved parallel genetic algorithm (PGA), and the neural network to simulate the two-phase capillary pressure and relative permeability of tight sandstone. To describe the nonlinear multiphase flow and the wettability behavior, five physical models, including the non-Darcy liquid flow rate formula, apparent permeability (AP) formula, and contact angle-capillary pressure relationship, are coupled into the neural network to improve the prediction accuracy. In addition, the input parameters and the structure of the physics-informed neural network are simplified based on analyzing the change rule of the oil–water flow with the main controlling factors, which can also save training time and improve the accuracy of the neural network. To obtain the data for training the coupled neural network, the dataset of tight sandstone in Ordos Basin is constructed with experimentally measured data and various fluid flow properties as constraints. The test results demonstrate that the estimated capillary pressure and relative permeability from the physics-informed neural network are in good agreement with the test ones. Finally, we have compared the physics-informed neural network with the quasi-static pore network model (QSPNM), dynamic pore network model (DPNM), and conventional artificial neural network (ANN). The calculation time of QSPNM and DPNM are hundreds of times longer than that of the physics-informed neural network. The coupled neural network has also performed much better than the conventional ANN. As the heterogeneity of pore spaces in tight sandstone increases, the advantages of the physics-informed neural network over ANN are more prominent. The prediction models generated in this study can estimate the capillary pressure and relative permeability based on only four routine parameters in a few seconds. Therefore, the physics-informed neural network in this paper can provide the potential parameters for large-scale reservoir simulation.

Abstract:The environmental pollution caused by buried oil pipeline leakage is a typical non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) pollution accident. Therefore, it seems more reasonable to assess the condition of buried oil pipelines considering the potential contamination range. The law of oil diffusion in porous soil is very important for the safety management of buried pipelines and the remedy of leakage accidents. This paper proposes a dynamic observation technique of NAPL in porous media for buried oil pipeline leakage. A quantitative relationship between the diesel saturation and color components is established based on the theoretical analysis combined with 21 groups of dyed diesel experimental results. The accuracy of the observation technique is verified by a quantitative analysis of a series of discrete point samplings and a comparison of diesel volume in a diesel diffusion experiment. The results show that the combination of a specified saturation boundary and the color components S and I can effectively track the diesel diffusion fronts. The relative error between the calculated cumulative volume and the injected cumulative volume fluctuates around 5% at different times. This improved technology can effectively make up for the limitation of the traditional light transmission visualization (LTV) under low-intensity light and promote the study of NAPLs diffusion characteristics. Furthermore, the dynamic observation technique of NAPL in porous media for buried oil pipeline leakage monitoring can make a significant contribution to the improvement of the level of buried pipeline leakage accidents and remediation.

Abstract:In the storage of hazardous chemicals, due to space limitations, various hazardous chemicals are usually mixed stored when their chemical properties do not conflict. In a fire or other accidents during storage, the emergency response includes two key steps: first, using fire extinguishers like dry powder and carbon dioxide to extinguish the burning hazardous chemicals. In addition, hazardous chemicals around the accident site are often watered to cool down to prevent the spread of the fire. But both the water and extinguishers may react chemically with hazardous chemicals at the accident site, potentially triggering secondary accidents. However, the existing research about hazardous chemical domino accidents only focuses on the pre-rescue stage and ignores the simulation of rescue-induced accidents that occur after rescue. Aiming at the problem, a quantitative representation algorithm for the spatial correlation of hazardous chemicals is first proposed to enhance the understanding of their spatial relationships. Subsequently, a graph neural network is introduced to simulate the evolution process of hazardous chemical cascade accidents. By aggregating the physical and chemical characteristics, the initial accident information of nodes, and bi-temporal node status information, deep learning models have gained the ability to accurately predict node states, thereby improving the intelligent simulation of hazardous chemical accidents. The experimental results validated the effectiveness of the method.

Simulation of Gas Mixture Dynamics in a Pipeline Network using Explicit Staggered-Grid Discretization

Abstract:We develop an explicit second order staggered finite difference discretization scheme for simulating the transport of highly heterogeneous gas mixtures through pipeline networks. This study is motivated by the proposed blending of hydrogen into natural gas pipelines to reduce end use carbon emissions while using existing pipeline systems throughout their planned lifetimes. Our computational method accommodates an arbitrary number of constituent gases with very different physical properties that may be injected into a network with significant spatiotemporal variation. In this setting, the gas flow physics are highly location- and time- dependent, so that local composition and nodal mixing must be accounted for. The resulting conservation laws are formulated in terms of pressure, partial densities and flows, and volumetric and mass fractions of the constituents. We include non-ideal equations of state that employ linear approximations of gas compressibility factors, so that the pressure dynamics propagate locally according to a variable wave speed that depends on mixture composition and density. We derive compatibility relationships for network edge domain boundary values that are significantly more complex than in the case of a homogeneous gas. The simulation method is evaluated on initial boundary value problems for a single pipe and a small network, is cross-validated with a lumped element simulation, and used to demonstrate a local monitoring and control policy for maintaining allowable concentration levels.

Application of GPR System with Convolutional Neural Network Algorithm Based on Attention Mechanism to Oil Pipeline Leakage Detection

Abstract:High-efficiency and high-quality detection of oil pipeline will significantly reduce environmental pollution and economic loss, so an unconventional oil pipeline anomaly detection convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithm based on attention mechanism is proposed in this article. By taking the simulated ground-penetrating radar (GPR) data as prior knowledge, the structure of the convolutional neural network based on the attention mechanism is constructed, and finally, the location and working condition of the underground oil pipeline are recognized in the simulation data and measured data. The simulation results show that after using the new optimized convolutional neural network, the accuracy rates of the leakage discrimination from horizontal data acquired along the oil pipeline and the classification of the target from longitudinal data acquired perpendicular to the oil pipeline are 94.5% and 84.6%, respectively. Compared with the original convolutional neural network without an attention mechanism, the accuracy rates of the leakage discrimination and the classification of the target are improved by 6.2% and 7.8%, respectively. We further train measured data with an optimized convolutional neural network, results show that compared with a conventional network, the new network can increase the corresponding accuracy rates of the leakage discrimination and the targets classification by 5.4% and 6.9%, reaching 92.3% and 84.4%, respectively. According to our study, the ground-penetrating radar oil pipeline recognition algorithm based on an attention mechanism can well accomplish the identification of underground oil pipelines.

Abstract:Practical applications often involve variable flow rates, posing significant challenges for physical informed neural networks (PINNs) to converge and find stable solutions. This paper proposes a new model named Simulation Net (Sim‐net), which is designed to simulate and solve seepage equations without the need for retraining. Numerical experiments demonstrate that Sim‐net efficiently solves seepage equations under unsteady boundaries, promising practical advancements in real‐world applications. The seepage equation plays a crucial role in fields such as groundwater management, petroleum engineering, and civil engineering. Currently, physical‐informed neural networks (PINNs) have become an effective tool for solving seepage equations. However, practical applications often involve variable flow rates, which pose significant challenges for using neural networks to find solutions. Inspired by Deep Operator Network (DeepONet), this paper proposes a new model named Simulation Net (Sim‐net) to deal with unsteady sources or sinks problems. Sim‐net is designed to simulate and solve seepage equations without the need for retraining. This model integrates potential spatial and temporal features based on spatial pressure distribution and well bottom–hole pressure, respectively, which serve as additional signposts to guide neural networks in approximating seepage equations. Sim‐net exhibits transfer learning capabilities, enabling it to handle variable flow rate problems without retraining for new flow conditions. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the trained model can directly solve seepage equations without the need for retraining, indicating its superior applicability compared to existing PINNs‐based methods. Additionally, in comparison to the DeepONet, Sim‐net achieves higher accuracy.

Abstract:With economic development and the burgeoning need for energy, numerous underground gas pipelines have been deployed for operation. Buried gas pipelines often suffer failures as a result of adverse factors, including corrosion, uneven subsidence, and damage caused by third parties. To investigate and predict the diffusion behavior following a natural gas pipeline leakage, Fluent software is utilized to develop a numerical model for the leakage and diffusion of high-pressure natural gas within a confined space. This model incorporates the Soave–Redlich–Kwong equation of state, which is widely recognized for its exceptional precision in characterizing the behavior of natural gas under high-pressure conditions. The study focuses on the analysis of leakage and diffusion behavior as well as the examination of how pipeline operating pressure and leakage diameter have an impact on the dispersion of leaked gas. Further, the prediction model for the diffusion distance of the hazardous area is developed, employing the least-square method and finite element calculations. The results show that, during the leakage process, a vortex and velocity region emerge, extending along the confined space. The farther away from the leakage hole above the pipeline, the higher the overall concentration of the gas. Moreover, the horizontal diffusion distance of gas at the bottom of the pipeline is considerably smaller than that above it. However, gas tends to readily accumulate in a high concentration area at the bottom of the pipeline. Elevating the leakage diameter and the operation pressure leads to a significant rise in gas concentration and the horizontal diffusion of the hazardous area. It is worth noting that the leakage diameter has a more pronounced effect on gas diffusion than does the pressure. The prediction model proposed in this study effectively anticipates the horizontal diffusion of the hazardous area within confined spaces.

Abstract:Marine oil release accident may pose a serve threat to marine environment. Modeling of underwater oil dispersion is helpful for risk assessment and emergency response of marine oil spill accident. This paper presents a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model to describe the dispersion behavior of oil released from buried subsea oil pipeline leak considering current and wave. The numerical model is validated by repeating the small-scale experiments. A comprehensive simulation of underwater oil dispersion from seafloor soil to sea surface under the combined action of wave and current is carried out. Effects of oil density, oil release rate, soil porosity, current speed on underwater oil dispersion are analyzed. Besides, this study considers underwater oil dispersion from multiple leak points on the pipeline, and a regression model for rapidly predicting oil dispersion is developed by numerical fitting. The uniqueness of this study is that it models underwater oil dispersion considering the seafloor soil and the combined action of current and wave. The presence of seafloor soil has a significant effect on oil migration shape and trajectory, and the variation of soil porosity has little effect on the dispersion distance of crude oil plume. Essentially, this study can be useful for the safety-related applications in marine oil spill accidents.
