Abstract:Quality and biochemical changes of navel orange (Citrus sinensis L., Osbeck) fruits in response to cinnamaldehyde-chitosan coating were studied during 120 day of storage at 10 +/- 1 degrees C and 80-90% RH. The results showed that the coating significantly reduced the decay rate and weight loss of the navel orange fruits, delay the decrease of the content of total soluble solids (TSS), titratable acidity (TA) and vitamin C (Vc), effectively inhibited the content of MDA. Furthermore, the coatings maintaining enhanced the activity of SOD, CAT, POD and PPO, delay the senescence of fruits. The high performance liquid chromatography analysis showed that coating treatment inhibited the decrease of total sugar content of fruits and slowed down the decline of total organic acids by slowing down the degradation of sucrose, fructose and citric acid content. Compared with chitosan coating, cinnamaldehyde- chitosan coating could significantly reduce the decay rate and had no adverse effects on fruit quality. Meanwhile, it could improve CAT, SOD and POD activity, induce the activity of PPO to increase, and improve the disease resistance of navel orange fruits. This study suggests that cinnamaldehyde-chitosan coating can extend the storage time and maintain quality of citrus fruit.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to explore the film-forming properties of cinnamon essential oil (CEO) and chitosan (CS) and the effect of their composite coating on postharvest apple diseases. The results demonstrated that the composite coating exhibits favorable film-forming properties at CEO concentrations below 4% (v/v). The effectiveness of the composite coating in disease control can be attributed to two factors: the direct inhibitory activity of CEO against pathogens in vitro and the induced resistance triggered by CS on the fruits. Importantly, the incorporation of CEO did not interfere with the induction of resistance by CS in harvested apples. However, it is noteworthy that the inhibitory effect of the CS–CEO composite coating on apple diseases diminished over time. Therefore, a key aspect of enhancing the preservation ability of fruits is improving the controlled release properties of CEO within CS coatings. This will enable a sustained and prolonged antimicrobial effect, thereby bolstering the fruit preservation capabilities of the composite coatings.

Abstract:Thirty-three patients with JRA were treated with proquazone during a 4-wk open-labeled, non-controlled trial. Increasing doses started at 400 mg/m2/d up to 800 mg/m2/d, not to exceed 960 mg/d. Oral administration was 4 times/d. One patient did not complete the study because an erythematous rash developed. Efficacy analysis showed significant decreases in the total number of active joints, the number and severity of joints with tenderness and LOM, DMS, and travel time (in all cases p less than .05). The drug appears to be similar in efficacy and safety to other NSAID that have been studied in children.

Abstract:Pickering emulsion, a novel technique that uses solid particles as emulsion stabilizers has attracted attention because of its long-term storage stability and good coalescence stability. This can help to prolong the shelf life of fresh produce. The poor water vapor barrier, ultraviolet (UV), mechanical, and antifungal capacities of alginate film limit its application in fruit preservation. In this study, alginate (Alg) films with improved water vapor permeability (WVP), mechanical properties, and ultraviolet (UV) barrier were prepared with ylang-ylang oil (YYO) Pickering emulsion (PE). YYO was added as an antimicrobial agent. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were used as natural stabilizers to prepare YYO PE. The final coating comprised 1% Alg (alginate), Alg/0.24% CNCs, and Alg/0.5% YYO PE. The impacts of YYO-PE on the properties of Alg films were investigated, and their effects on post-harvest control of mandarins were evaluated. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCMS) was used to identify the components of YYO. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed an increase in the roughness of the films containing the Alg/YYO PE. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis revealed no new interactions in the Alg/YYO PE films. Moisture content (MC) and thermal properties were lower for Alg/YYO-PE films. The Alg/YYO-PE coating lowered the weight loss (7.84 ± 1.76%) and inhibited (p < 0.05) the growth of Penicillium italicum (P. italicum) and Penicillium digitatum (P. digitatum). The inhibition percentages were 56.02% and 47.98%, respectively, for the inoculated mandarins. In conclusion, the Alg/YYO PE coating and film have the potential to be an eco-friendly active packaging material in the food sector.

Abstract:The presence of chemical pesticides has an impact on human health and there is an urgent need for the development of green antifungal alternatives. This study investigated the freshness application of dehydroabietic acid-modified chitosan product (CSDA) mixed with three essential oil (litsea cubeba oil (LCO), wintergreen essential oil (WEO), cinnamon essential oil (CEO)). The antifungal activity of modified chitosan/essential oils was tested by the punching method and the antifungal mechanism was investigated by the transmission electron microscope (TEM). The results showed that fungal inhibition rate of CSDA-WEO on Penicillium digitatum reached 100% at a concentration of 0.05 mu L/mL and on Penicillium italicum reached 100% at a concentration of 1 mu L/mL. Both molds were not well inhibited by CSDA-LCO and CSDA-CEO. CSDA-WEO was able to affect the cell walls and energy metabolism of the molds, resulting in nutrient loss and death. Fruits were preserved with 0.1 mg/g CSDA and 1 mu L/mL WEO. CSDA-WEO maintained the antioxidant activity of citrus, inhibited respiration and water loss, and extended shelf life up to 24 days. CSDA-WEO extended the shelf life of longan to 18 days and kiwi slices to 6 days. CSDA-WEO is expected to serve as an alternative to chemical fungicides and shows promise as a broad-spectrum fruit and vegetable preservative.

Abstract:A multifunctional cellulose‐based preservation coating with antibacterial, oxygen/water vapor barrier, and antioxidant properties, which is based on cellulose microgel (CMG) and prepared using multi‐component composites with montmorillonite (MMT), cationic cellulose derivative (Cell‐P+), and L‐ascorbic acid (Vc). It has good wetting properties, highly transparent, edible, and washable. This method can successfully preserve the long‐term freshness of various fruits. Long‐term preservation of fresh fruit and vegetables without a cold chain is a great challenge to food security because fruits and vegetables are highly vulnerable to poor storage conditions. Fruit spoilage is a complex biochemical process that involves many factors, including microbial reproduction, oxidation, metabolism, and H2O evaporation. Only the synergy of the multiple spoilage inhibition methods can achieve long‐term freshness preservation. Herein, a multifunctional cellulose‐based preservation coating with antibacterial, oxygen/water vapor barrier, and antioxidant properties is proposed, which is based on cellulose microgel (CMG) and prepared using multi‐component composites with montmorillonite (MMT), cationic cellulose derivative (Cell‐P+), and L‐ascorbic acid (Vc). Improving the quality of grapes by coating chitosan–zinc oxide nanoparticles

Abstract:The current work aimed to improve the grape nutritional quality, by coating applications through the combined treatment of chitosan–zinc oxide nanoparticles and essential oil. Four coating syntheses have been prepared. The control was prepared with the addition of distilled water, 1% glycerol, and 0.5% acetic acid, the second treatment chitosan (CS) was prepared by mixing 1 g chitosan powder with 0.5% acetic acid solution, 1% glycerol, and stirred for 12 hours at a temperature of 40 °C, the third treatment CS-ZNO was prepared with 1% zinc oxide nanoparticles and CS mother solution, while the fourth treatment (CS-ZNO-EO) synthesis was prepared to blend CS-ZNO with 1% essential bergamot oil (BO). Several physical, chemical and biological parameters evaluation was carried out on grapes every (0, 4, 7, 14, and 16 days). The study findings revealed that the berry abscission index was positively affected by CS-NZO and CS-NZO-EO treatments, which presented lower values of 2.58% and 1.77% respectively. The inhibitory effects were increased during the whole shelf life to reach 3.62–5.47 Log CFU/Berry at the end of the storage period, nevertheless of the orders of the various treatments. The maximum decrease in microbial contamination (3.62 Log CFU/Berry) was observed in the CS-NZO-EO treated samples on the 16th day. Though, the lowest soluble solid content (SSC) value was established by the control that was the worst to reach 12.11% towards the end of the storage period. In the same trend, CS-NZO and CS treatments recorded similar values of 13.5% and 12.78%, respectively. The lowest value for titratable acidity (TA) was detected for the control samples on the 16th day of storage 0.32 g/100 g citric acid. The highest TA value was established for CS-NZO-EO and CS treatments that reported 0.46 g/100 g and 0.45 g/100 g citric acid, respectively. The value of catalase enzyme activity (CAT) reached the bottom 21.55 U/g after 16 days for control samples. CS-NZO increased again between 14 and16 days to achieve the highest value of 39.74 U/g; while the CAT activity of grape samples coated with single CS or CS-NZO-EO detected increases on the 16th day to reach 38.47 and 32.74 U/g, respectively. Further studies on combined treatment therapy are needed to optimize the applications of the protective coating of foods in the food industry.

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Background</h3><p>The perishable nature of fruits and vegetables makes their shelf-life limited. Environmental factors, transportation and preservation conditions through postharvest could decrease the storage time and quality. Therefore, prolonging supply time of fruits and vegetables by safer postharvest treatments direct the preservation methods to edible coatings. Active edible coatings incorporating different types of functional substances can be used as a preservation method to boost strategies in improving quality, safety and shelf-life of fruits and vegetables upon storage.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Scope and approach</h3><p>This review attempts to present a complete overview of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and pectin as a basis for edible coatings and recent developments related to their application as active coatings for preservation of fruits and vegetables quality.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Key findings and conclusion</h3><p>CMC and pectin are two main polysaccharides with great potential in making edible coatings. The CMC- and pectin-based edible coatings are commonly odorless, tasteless, non-toxic, non-allergic, water-soluble, transparent and resistant to oil and fats. CMC and pectin, additionally, could be good carriers for active additives. In this sense, CMC and pectin-based active coatings could provide a great potential both for their protective effect and carrying functional compounds such as antimicrobials, antioxidants, anti-browning agents, texture enhancers and nutraceuticals into their coating matrix to prevent unwanted reactions (e.g., microbial growth, oxidation, enzymatic browning and softening) in horticultural products. Such strategy could inhibit microbial decays and enzymatic or biochemical damages and prevent physical or textural deteriorations in fruits and vegetables during storage.</p>

Abstract:Application of hydrophobic coatings, such as carnauba wax nanoemulsions, combined with natural antimicrobials, has been demonstrated to be an effective solution in extending the shelf life of fruits. The present study evaluated the effectiveness of carnauba wax nanoemulsion (CWN) coatings containing free or encapsulated with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) essential oils of Syzigium aromaticum (CEO) and Mentha spicata (MEO) for the post-harvest conservation of papaya fruit. The chemical composition of the essential oils (EOs) was analyzed using GC-MS. Subsequently, coatings incorporating free and encapsulated EOs were prepared and applied to papaya fruit. Fruit was evaluated for post-harvest quality parameters during 15 days of storage. Clove essential oil presented as main compounds eugenol (89.73%), spearmint and carvone (68.88%), and limonene (20.34%). The observed reduction in weight loss in coated fruit can be attributed to the formation of a physical barrier provided by the coating. Compared to the control group, which experienced the highest weight loss of 24.85%, fruit coated with CWN and CWN-MEO:β-CD exhibited significantly lower weight loss percentages of only 5.78% and 7.5%, respectively. Compared to the control group, which exhibited a release of ethylene at a rate of 1.3 μg kg−1 h−1, fruit coated with CWN, CWN-MEO:β-CD, and CWN-MEO coatings demonstrated a lower ethylene release rate at 0.7 μg kg−1 h−1. Although the physical-chemical properties of papayas, including pH, Brix, titratable acidity, color, and texture, remained largely unchanged during storage with the coatings, analysis of incidence and severity of papaya post-harvest deterioration revealed that coatings containing essential oils effectively acted as antifungals in the fruit. Microscopy images showed that CWN and CWN-MEO:β-CD coatings are more uniform compared to the others. The edible coatings, especially CWN and CWN-MEO: β-CD, can act as antimicrobial coatings on papaya fruit, increasing their conservation during post-harvest storage.

Abstract:This study aimed to enhance the weak antibacterial activity of silk fibroin (SF) by creating a composite edible coating film. The film was composed of chitosan (CS), SF, and a 3% (v/v) cinnamon essential oil microemulsion (CEOM), which showed excellent inhibition rates of over 99% against two bacteria and four fungi. The resulting film had a transparency of 84.6% and a contact angle of 61.85° on hydrophobic surfaces. In addition, it exhibited a low water vapor permeability of 1.09 × 10−12 g·cm−1·s−1·Pa−1. These properties make it ideal for use in food coating applications. To assess the preservation capabilities of the composite films, strawberries were coated with different films: CS, SF, SF-CEOM, and SF-CS-CEOM. The results showed that the SF-CS-CEOM film had a similar effect to the SF-CEOM film in suppressing the deterioration of strawberries, when compared to the untreated group, and the shelf life of the strawberries was extended from 2 days to 8 days. The SF-CS-CEOM film inhibits oxidation and metabolism by reducing gas exchange, thereby protecting the integrity of cell membranes, maintaining firmness, and reducing weight loss, while delaying the onset of spoilage by inhibiting microbial growth.

Abstract:In the present study, the effects of orange peel essential oils (EOs) on the physiochemical, rheological, particle size and zeta potential distribution of the developed aloe vera gel-based edible coating were investigated. We also investigated the effects of prepared aloe vera gel-based edible coating (with or without incorporation of orange peel essential oil) on the postharvest shelf life and characteristics such as physiological loss of weight (PLW), color, respiration rate, firmness, total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), antioxidant activity, and antimicrobial activity of button mushroom ( Agaricus bisporus ) at 4 °C during 16 days of storage. The results revealed that the 50% concentration of aloe vera gel-based edible coating without addition of essential oil had significantly superior properties with higher stability zeta potential (− 9.7 mV) as compared to other concentrations of aloe vera gel-based formulation. It also showed the highest potential to maintain the postharvest quality attributes of mushrooms throughout storage. The maximum concentration of orange peel essential oil (1500 μL/L) incorporated in the 50% aloe vera gel (F3)-based treatment significantly improved the postharvest quality attributes of mushrooms as compared to coating prepared with incorporation of 500 μL/L and 1000 μL/L concentration of EOs (orange peel essential oils) and helped extend the shelf life of mushrooms up to 4 days as compared to the control (50% AV (aloe vera gel) only). Further research should be performed to develop water and gas barrier composite edible coatings to further extend mushroom shelf life.

Abstract:The polysaccharide based composite biomaterial (coating) used in preserving fruits and vegetables during storage is attracting increased attention as it is biodegradable material that prolongs shelf life. In the present investigation, chitosan–pullulan (50:50) composite edible coating was prepared with pomegranate peel extract (0.02 g/mL) as an active antioxidant agent. The effect of treatment with pomegranate peel extract enriched chitosan–pullulan composite edible coating on the shelf life of mango fruits during 18 days of storage period at room (23 °C) and cold (4 °C) temperature was evaluated. Results of the present study demonstrated that the application of chitosan–pullulan composite edible coating significantly (p ≤ 0.05) influences the storage life of mango fruits at both storage temperatures. The chitosan–pullulan composite edible coating reduced the physiological loss in weight (PLW), and maintained total soluble solids (TSS), acidity and pH of coated mango fruits as compared to the control. In addition, fruit sensory quality such as freshness, color, taste and texture were also retained by the treatment. Furthermore, sustained firmness, phenolic content and antioxidant activity confirmed the effectiveness of the pomegranate peel extract enriched chitosan–pullulan composite edible coating on mango fruits. The phenolic, flavonoid and antioxidant activity of coated fruits were retained by pomegranate peel rich edible coating. Therefore, the chitosan–pullulan (50:50) combination with pomegranate peel extract can be used as an alternative preservation method to prolong the shelf life of mango fruits at room and cold storage conditions. However, more in-depth studies are required at farm and transit level without affecting the postharvest quality of mango fruits, providing more revenue for farmers and minimizing postharvest losses.

Abstract:Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) was employed as an intermediate layer to enhance interfacial interaction between chitosan (CS) coating and tangerine fruits, thereby improving the preservation effect. Owing to the low surface tension of tangerine fruit (26.04 mN/m), CS coating solutions showed poor wetting properties on fruit peels (contact angle > 100°). However, by applying a 1.0 % (w/v) HPMC coating on fruits, the contact angle of CS solutions with concentrations of 0.5 %, 1.0 %, and 1.5 % (w/v) decreased to 47.0°, 47.4°, and 48.5°, respectively, whereas the spreading coefficient increased to -16.0 mN/m, -17.6 mN/m and -19.8 mN/m, respectively. Subsequently, the effects of the coatings on fruit quality were investigated. The results demonstrated the promising performance of HPMC-CS two-layer coating in inhibiting fruit respiration, reducing decay rate, and maintaining nutrient content. Notably, HPMC-1.5%CS coating not only reduced the decay rate of tangerine fruit by 45 % and 31 %, in comparison to the uncoated group (CK) and pure CS coating respectively, but also maintained a high content of ascorbic acid. Therefore, this study confirmed that the use of amphiphilic polymers for improving the surface properties of fruits can effectively facilitate the wetting of hydrophilic coatings on fruits, and significantly improve the fresh-keeping performance of edible coatings.

Abstract:The present research investigates the effectiveness of nano-emulsified coatings (C-1, C-2, and C-3) in preserving the kiwifruit at a temperature of 10‚ÄØ¬±‚ÄØ2‚ÄØ¬∞C with 90‚Äì95‚ÄØ% relative humidity (RH) for 30‚ÄØdays. The nano-emulsions were prepared from varied carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) concentrations with different combinations of essential oils such as thyme, clove, and cardamom. Dynamic light scattering investigation with Zeta Sizer revealed that C-1, C-2, and C-3 nano-emulsions have nano sizes of 81.3‚ÄØ¬±‚ÄØ2.3, 115.3‚ÄØ¬±‚ÄØ4.2, and 63.2‚ÄØ¬±‚ÄØ3.2‚ÄØnm, respectively. The scanning electron microscopy images showed that the nanoemulsion of C-1 had homogenous spherical globules, C-2 had voids, and C-3 showed a non-porous structure with uniform dispersion. The X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that C-1, C-2, and C-3 nano-emulsion exhibited distinct crystallinity and peaks. The nano-emulsion C-1 had reduced crystallinity, while C-2 had lower intensity peaks, and C-3 had increased crystallinity. The results documented that compared to control kiwifruit samples, the samples coated with C-3 nano-emulsion have decreased weight loss, decay incidence, soluble solids, maturity index activity, ethylene production, total bacterial count, and increased titratable acid, and firmness attributes. The results of current research are promising and would be applicable in utilization in industrial applications.

Abstract:Previous studies have shown that polymethoxylated flavonoids-loaded citral emulsion (PCT) can inhibit the growth and reproduction of Penicillium in citrus; however, PCT is difficult to apply to fruit preservation due to its high fluidity and volatility. Therefore, in this study, we combined PCT with chitosan (CS) to investigate the effect of a composite coating on citrus preservation. The results showed that compared to the control group, the CS-PCT group could effectively reduce the decay rate and maintain moisture availability, color difference, and hardness. Moreover, the contents of nonenzymatic antioxidants and volatile substances with antimicrobial activity were better preserved. In addition, the activities of related antioxidant enzymes were greater in the treatment group, and the expression of the corresponding enzyme-encoding genes was upregulated. Consequently, CS-PCT treatment could effectively maintain fruit quality and improve the resistance of citrus fruits during storage; moreover, it can be considered a nontoxic and efficient citrus preservative.

Abstract:Food bioactive packaging has received increasing attention from consumers and the food industry for its potential to reduce food waste and environmental issues. Several materials can be used to produce edible films/coats; however, bio-based, cost-effective, and sustainable coatings have gained a high reputation these days. For instance, Aloe vera gel (AV) is a promising bio-based material for edible coatings and films; therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the film-forming abilities of AV and Chitosan (CH) combination as a potential active food packaging material. The physicochemical and mechanical characteristics of formed films of various combinations were prepared at different concentrations, i.e., CH (0.5% w/v), AV (100%), CH:AV (75:25), and CH:AV (60:40). The results showed significant differences among all the prepared edible films wherein these differences were mainly on account of incorporating AV gel. The rheological and antioxidant properties of the formulations improved with the inclusion of AV gel. The films composed of CH:AV (60:40) positively affected the water solubility, thermal properties, and water vapour permeability of the edible films. The X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results showed that the films composed of CH:AV, (60:40) were amorphous and had smooth morphology. Further, the edible film solutions were applied to fresh figs (Ficus carica) to investigate their role in preserving fruits during storage. A significant reduction in microbial growth was found in coated fruits after 28 days of cold storage. The films composed of CH and AV showed overall improved results compared to the CH (0.5%, w/v). Therefore, the used formulations (CH:AV, 60:40) can form a sustainable film that has the potential to be utilized for fresh product preservation to maintain its quality and shelf life.

Abstract:Two bioactive molecules derived from citrus peel and garlic (pectin and carbon quantum dot), were used to develop pectin-based edible films for food packaging and coating applications. The interaction between pectin molecules and carbon quantum dots (CDs) resulted in a composite film (CDs/pectin) with improved antioxidant and antibacterial activity, as well as better mechanical properties. The changes brought about by the addition of CDs to the film and their suitability for food packaging were verified through fundamental characterization. The intrinsic fluorescence properties of CDs with pH sensitivity will be further investigated to explore their potential application in food quality detection. Besides, the use of active ingredients from food sources and excellent degradability suggest that the bio-nanocomposite film is a potential edible food packaging material. A formulation based on citrus peel and garlic was used for the surface coating of strawberries to extend their shelf life. The strawberries treated with the active coating did not show any significant signs of decay or dehydration after 5 days. This active packaging coating derived from food ingredients offers a promising natural alternative to conventional materials, with potential applications in extending food product shelf life, promoting human health, and detecting spoilage.
