Abstract:Artemisia pollen is an important allergen source of respiratory allergy in Beijing, China. However, there are few pollen stations using Burkard pollen traps in Beijing, and few reports on Artemisia pollen. This research is to analyze annual, daily and diurnal variations in Artemisia pollen concentration in four monitoring stations of Beijing during 2015-2018, and then to investigate their affecting factors. Artemisia pollen season starts in late July or early August, and ends in late September and early October. Daily peak appeared in late August or early September, and diurnal peak emerged during 06:00 - 10:00 or 17:00 - 20:00. Difference in vegetation coverage between urban (less than 1%) and suburban (27.2%) stations within 500 m greatly determined difference in SPI (Seasonal pollen index) between urban and suburban. Temperature and rainfall in the period prior to pollen season, together with the frequency and wind speed of dominant wind direction were responsible for annual variations of SPI. On a daily timescale, temperature was the most important factor influencing pollen concentration, explaining 18.6-43.9% of variance. In the course of the day, increase in temperature and decrease in relative humidity contributed to dehiscence of the anther in the early morning, leading to diurnal peak after sunrise. Wind may dilute or give a rise to the locally released pollen grains depending on the wind speed. Highintensity rainfall (intensity: > 2 mm h(-1)) had washing-off effects on pollen concentration in the atomosphere, Besides air masses originated from the southerly, northerly and northwesterly directions influenced daily pollen peak by long-range transport. Multiple regression model for each station was constructed to predict daily pollen concentration using previous pollen concentrations and previous meteorological variables in three years, explaining 51.8-75.3% of variance.
[Analysis of pollen sensitization characteristics of artemisia allergic rhinitis in three urban and rural areas of Inner Mongolia]

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the distribution rules of artemisia pollen and the clinical sensitization characteristics of allergic rhinitis (AR) induced by artemisia pollen in three urban and rural areas of Inner Mongolia. Methods: From March to October 2019, in 3 central cities (Chifeng, Hohhot, Ordos) and rural areas of Inner Mongolia, an epidemiological investigation method combining multi-stage stratified random sampling and face-to-face questionnaire survey was adopted to screen suspected AR patients, and skin prick test (SPT) was applied for diagnosis. At the same time, pollen monitoring was carried out in 3 areas to analyze the distribution and clinical sensitization characteristics of artemisia pollen.SPSS26.0 statistical software was used to process all the data. Chi-square test was used to compare rates among different age, sex, region and nationality, Spearman test was used to describe correlation analysis, and pairwise comparison of positive rates among multiple samples was used Bonferroni method. Results: Among the 6 393 subjects, 1 093 cases were diagnosed with AR, and the prevalence of AR was 17.10% (1 093/6 393). Among them, pollen-induced allergic rhinitis, the prevalence of PiAR was 10.97% (701/6 393), accounting for 64.14%(701/1 093).The highest incidence was in the youth group (20-39 years old), accounting for 46.94% (329/701).The diagnosed prevalence was higher in females than in males (11.35% vs. 10.64%, χ2 value 12.304, P<0.001).The prevalence rate of ethnic minority was higher than that of Han nationality (13.01% vs. 10.65%, χ2 value 6.296, P=0.008).The prevalence in urban areas was also significantly higher than that in rural areas (18.40% vs. 5.50%, χ2 value 10.497, P<0.001).There was significant difference in prevalence rate among the three regions in Inner Mongolia (6.06% in Chifeng, 13.46% in Hohhot, 16.39% in Ordos, χ2 value 70.054, P<0.001).The main clinical symptoms of artemisia PiAR were sneezing (95.58%), nasal congestion (91.73%) and nasal itching (89.30%).Allergic conjunctivitis accounted for 79.60% (558/701), chronic sinusitis for 55.63% (390/701), asthma for 23.25% (163/701).The pattern of artemisia pollen sensitization was mainly multiple sensitization, and the frequency of clinical symptoms and clinical diseases induced by hypersensitization with other allergens accounted for more than that caused by single artemisia pollen. The spread period of Artemisia pollen in the three regions was from June to October, and the peak state was in August in summer. The peak time of clinical symptoms in artemisia PiAR patients was about 2 weeks earlier than the peak time of pollen concentration, and the two were significantly positively correlated (R=0.7671, P<0.001). Conclusion: Artemisia pollens are the dominant pollens in late summer and early autumn in Inner Mongolia, and the prevalence of artemisia PiAR is high. Controlling the spread of Artemisia pollens is of great significance for the prevention and treatment of AR.
[A multi-dimensional analysis of pollen broadcasting concerns in Chinese population: a large-scale multi-center cross-sectional survey].

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the concern about pollen broadcasting in Chinese population from multiple dimensions and to understand the information about allergic rhinitis (AR) in China by analyzing related factors. Methods: From March 1 to September 30, 2022, a large-scale multi-center cross-sectional survey was conducted based on the Questionnaire Star platform in 21 Chinese hospitals. A total of 7 056 subjects from 7 regions in China: Northeast, North, East, Central, South, Southwest, and Northwest China were included. Basic characteristics (including social demographic characteristics and disease characteristics of AR patients), concern about pollen broadcasting, the willingness of pollen-induced AR (PiAR) patients to receive pollen broadcasting, and the treatment satisfaction rate of AR patients were collected. The chi-square test, multivariate linear regression model, and Logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the concern about pollen broadcasting in the Chinese population and related factors from multiple dimensions. Results: Among 7 056 subjects, 23.02% were concerned about pollen broadcasting. Among 3 176 self-reported AR and 1 019 PiAR patients, 25.60% and 39.16% were concerned about pollen broadcasting, respectively, which was higher than that of non-AR or non-PiAR subjects (χ2 value was 21.74 and 175.11, respectively, both P<0.001). Among AR patients, the proportion of spring and autumn allergen-positive patients concerned about pollen broadcasting was higher than that in perennial allergen-positive patients (χ2 value was 20.90 and 19.51, respectively, both P<0.001). The proportion of AR patients with asthma, sinusitis, allergic conjunctivitis, and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases was higher than those without complications (χ2 value was 50.83, 21.97, 56.78, 7.62, respectively, all P<0.05). The proportion of AR patients in North China who could find pollen broadcasting locally was 31.01%, significantly higher than those in other regions (all P<0.05). Multivariate linear regression model analysis showed that among PiAR patients, those with higher per capita household income and higher AR disease cognition levels had been concerned about pollen broadcasting in the past, and those complicated with allergic conjunctivitis had stronger intention to receive pollen broadcasting (B value was 0.24, 0.13, 0.66, 0.47, respectively, all P<0.05). The higher the disease cognition level of PiAR patients, the stronger their willingness to actively participate in treatment (R2=0.72, P<0.001). Only 18.89% of AR patients felt satisfied with the treatment effect. Logistic regression analysis showed that in AR patients, the treatment satisfaction rate was significantly higher among those concerned about pollen broadcasting compared to those who were not (OR=1.83, P<0.001). Conclusions: Currently, the dissemination of pollen broadcasting in China is hindered by various factors such as disease cognition level. The treatment satisfaction among AR patients remains unsatisfactory.
[Relationship among allergic rhinitis, regional pollens and meteorological conditions in Kunming area]

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the species, quantity and diffusion of allergenic pollens as well as the relationship among allergic rhinitis (AR), pollen species and meteorological conditions in Kunming area. Methods: The exposure film was used to investigate the species of airborne pollen, the total number of these pollens during December 2009 to November 2010 by means of gravitational sedimentation, at the same time, AR patients were registered. The species of allergic pollen in Kunming area during the same period, and the statistic analysis was made with the meteorological elements, using the correlation analysis methods of Excel for data analysis. Results: From December 2009 to November 2010, a total of 60 exposure films of pollen species was found, including 26 147 pollens. The annual airborne pollen showed two scattering peak, respectively: February to April and September to October; the number of advantage pollen was 17 species. The number of year-round drifting pollen was 13 species while 2 species showed two peaks on spring and autumn. There was another 26 new species added to the results of 2009-2010, compared with 1987-1989, while the original 12 species were not seen. The drifting peak was the same. The number of allergen intradermal tests (AIT) positive AR patients was positively correlated with 16 pollen species, respectively, oleaceae, alnus nepalensis, walnut, palm, pig weed, fennel, Amaranthaceae, artemisia, rosa, Albizia julibrissin Durazz, gramineae, castor, Fraxinus L, populus, Morus alba L, hemp humulus, (r value were 0.689 7, 0.550 1, 0.742 1, 0.755 2, 0.771 2, 0.663 3, 0.556 1, 0.568 3, 0.659 8, 0.607 4, 0.834 7, 0.664 3, 0.745 9, 0.634 7, 0.718 3, 0.777 2, all P < 0.05). The population of AIT positive AR patients was positively correlated with average temperature, average wind speed and other meteorological factors (r values were 0.552 0, 0.883 5, both P < 0.05), and was negatively correlated with average relative humidity (r = -0.714 7, P < 0.05). Conclusions: Kunming had a large number of airborne pollen species which showed two peaks annually, respectively, spring and autumn. The relationship among the number of AIT positive AR patients, the meteorological factors and the number of airborne pollen were close.

Abstract:The genus Artemisia , an important allergen related to Allergic Rhinitis (AR), is widespread in temperate regions. However, the sensitization rate of Artemisia pollen varies significantly, and the source of Artemisia pollen is not clear. Based on continuous daily airborne pollen monitoring in the summer and autumn of 2019 and 2020 in northern Beijing, the daily number of AR patient visits during the same period, and the detection of allergen serum-specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE) in some AR patients, this study discusses the sensitization rate of Artemisia pollen and its transmission pathway and possible source area. The results show that (1) Artemisia pollen is the most important airborne pollen in summer and autumn in northern Beijing, and the pollen concentration is significantly related to the daily number of AR patient visits; (2) the rate of AR patients testing positive for Artemisia pollen allergens is 32.35 %, which is the first risk allergen and is consistent with the high sensitization rate of Artemisia pollen in northern China; and (3) in addition to local sources, central and southern Inner Mongolia, southern Mongolia and northwestern China are potential source areas of Artemisia pollen within the study area. This study provides first-hand data for accurately understanding the allergenic characteristics and sources of Artemisia pollen in northern Beijing and provides a scientific basis for the prevention of AR induced by Artemisia pollen in patients in China.

Abstract:Artemisia pollen is an important allergen responsible for allergic rhinitis in Beijing, China. To explore the transport pathways and source areas of Artemisia pollen, we used Burkard 7-day traps to monitor daily pollen concentrations in 2016 in an urban and suburban locality. Backward trajectories of 24- and 96-h and their cluster analysis were performed to identify transport pathways of Artemisia pollen using the HYSPLIT model on 0.5° × 0.5° GADS meteorological data. The potential source contribution function (PSCF) and concentration weighted trajectory (CWT) were calculated to further identify the major potential source areas at local, regional, and long-range scales. Our results showed significant differences in Artemisia pollen concentration between urban and suburban areas, attributed to differences in plant distribution and altitude of the sampling locality. Such differences arisen from both pollen emission and air mass movements, hence pollen dispersal. At local or regional scales, source area of northwestern parts of Beijing City, Hebei Province and northern and northwestern parts of Inner Mongolia influenced the major transport pathways of Artemisia pollen. Transport pathway at a long-range scale and its corresponding source area extended to northwestern parts of Mongolia. The regional-scale transport affected by wind and altitude is more profound for Artemisia pollen at the suburban than at the urban station.
Characteristics and sources of atmospheric pollutants in typical inland cities in arid regions of central Asia: A case study of Urumqi city

Abstract:The arid zone of central Asia secluded inland and has the typical features of the atmosphere. Human activities have had a significant impact on the air quality in this region. Urumqi is a key city in the core area of the Silk Road and an important economic center in Northwestern China. The urban environment is playing an increasingly important role in regional development. To study the characteristics and influencing factors of the main atmospheric pollutants in Urumqi, this study selected Urumqi’s daily air quality index (AQI) data and observation data of six major pollutants including fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ), breathable particulate matter (PM 10 ), sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ), nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), carbon monoxide (CO), and ozone (O 3_8h ) from 2014 to 2018 in conjunction with meteorological data to use a backward trajectory analysis method to study the main characteristics of atmospheric pollutants and their sources in Urumqi from 2014 to 2018. The results showed that: (1) From 2014 to 2018, the annual average of PM 2.5 , PM 10 , SO 2 , NO 2 and CO concentrations showed a downward trend, and O 3_8h concentrations first increased, then decreased, and then increased, reaching the highest value in 2018 (82.15 μg·m -3 ); The seasonal changes of PM 2.5 , PM 10 , SO 2 , NO 2 and CO concentrations were characterized by low values in summer and fall seasons and high values in winter and spring seasons. The concentration of O 3_8h , however, was in the opposite trend, showing the high values in summer and fall seasons, and low values in winter and spring seasons. From 2014 to 2018, with the exception of O 3_8h , the concentration changes of the other five major air pollutants were high in December, January, and February, and low in May, June, and July; the daily changes showed a “U-shaped” change during the year. The high-value areas of the "U-shaped" mode formed around the 50th day and the 350th day. (2) The high-value area of AQI was from the end of fall (November) to the beginning of the following spring (March), and the low-value area was from April to October. It showed a U-shaped change trend during the year and the value was mainly distributed between 50 and 100. (3) The concentrations of major air pollutants in Urumqi were significantly negatively correlated with precipitation, temperature, and humidity ( P <0.01), and had the highest correlation coefficients with temperature. (4) Based on the above analysis results, this study analyzed two severe pollution events from late November to early December. Analysis showed that the PM 2.5 /PM 10 ratio in two events remained at about 0.1 when the pollution occurred, but was higher before and after the pollution (up to 1.46). It was shown that the pollution was a simple sandstorm process. Backward trajectory analysis clustered the airflow trajectories reaching Urumqi into 4 categories, and the trajectories from central Asia contributed the maximum values of average PM 2.5 and PM 10 concentrations.

Abstract:The structural properties of single component fluids of hard hyperspheres in odd space dimensionalities d are studied with an analytical approximation method that generalizes the rational function approximation earlier introduced in the study of hard-sphere fluids [S. B. Yuste and A. Santos, Phys. Rev. A 43, 5418 (1991)]. The theory makes use of the exact form of the radial distribution function to first order in density and extends it to finite density by assuming a rational form for a function defined in Laplace space, the coefficients being determined by simple physical requirements. Fourier transform in terms of reverse Bessel polynomials constitute the mathematical framework of this approximation, from which an analytical expression for the static structure factor is obtained. In its most elementary form, the method recovers the solution of the Percus-Yevick closure to the Ornstein-Zernike equation for hyperspheres at odd dimensions. The present formalism allows one to go beyond by yielding solutions with thermodynamic consistency between the virial and compressibility routes to any desired equation of state. Excellent agreement with available computer simulation data at d=5 and d=7 is obtained.
Artemisia Pollen Allergy in China: Component Resolved Diagnosis Reveals Asthma Patients Have Significant Multiple Allergen Sensitization

Abstract:Background Artemisia pollen allergy is a major cause of asthma in Northern China. Possible associations between IgE responses to Artemisia allergen components and clinical phenotypes have not yet been evaluated. This study was to establish sensitization patterns of four Artemisia allergens and possible associations with demographic characteristics and clinical phenotypes in three areas of China. Methods Two hundred and forty patients allergic to Artemisia pollen were examined, 178 from Shanxi and 30 from Shandong Provinces in Northern China, and 32 from Yunnan Province in Southwestern China. Allergic asthma, rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and eczema symptoms were diagnosed. All patients' sera were tested by ImmunoCAP with mugwort pollen extract and the natural components nArt v 1, nArt ar 2, nArt v 3, and nArt an 7. Results The frequency of sensitization and the IgE levels of the four components in Artemisia allergic patients from Southwestern China were significantly lower than in those from the North. Art v 1 and Art an 7 were the most frequently recognized allergens (84% and 87%, respectively), followed by Art v 3 (66%) and Art ar 2 (48%). Patients from Northern China were more likely to have allergic asthma (50%) than patients from Southwestern China (3%), and being sensitized to more than two allergens increased the risk of allergic asthma, in which co-sensitization to three major allergens Art v 1, Art v 3, and Art an 7 is prominent. Conclusions Component-resolved diagnosis of Chinese Artemisia pollen-allergic patients helps assess the potential risk of mugwort-associated allergic asthma.
Correlation of Pollen Concentration and Meteorological Factors with Medical Condition of Allergic Rhinitis in Shenyang Area

Abstract:Background: The pathogenesis of allergic rhinitis (AR) was affected by meteorological and environmental factors. This study investigated the association between clinical symptoms of AR patients with pollen dispersal and meteorological conditions. Methods: The clinical features of 10,838 AR patients who were treated in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, The First Hospital of China Medical University, Shenyang, from March 2021 to October 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. We collected pollen by a pollen collector, read and counted it under a microscope, identified the species of the pollen particles, and recorded meteorological data (average daily temperature, maximum and minimum temperature, average daily wind, average daily precipitation, average daily humidity, average pressure, air quality index, PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2, CO, and O3), to analyze the correlation among meteorological conditions, pollen dispersal, and number of AR visits. Finally, pollen allergen-positive and symptoms were scored. Results: Among the AR visits, patients >41 years old accounted for the highest proportion (64.15%). 43.67% of the patients were complicated with bronchial asthma, and the disease incidence peaked in September. During the period of the study, a total of 27,512 pollen grains were collected, and 17 species were identified. The pollens of Compositae and Moraceae were the main allergenic sources leading to the increase in AR visits from August to September. The peak of pollen dispersal was in spring, summer, and autumn. The total amount of pollen was not only related to the average daily minimum temperature, average daily precipitation, and average daily humidity but also had a significant correlation with air quality index and air pollutants (PM2.5 and PM10, SO2, NO2, and CO). In addition, there was a significant correlation between the number of daily pollen allergen-positive patients and the pollen concentration of Compositae and Moraceae as well as air pollution components. The clinical symptoms of pollen allergen-positive patients were mainly nasal congestion, red/itchy eyes, and epiphora. Conclusion: The peak seasons of pollen dispersal in Shenyang were in spring, summer, and autumn, and the allergenic pollens were mainly Compositae and Moraceae. In addition, AR was substantially correlated with pollen concentration and meteorological factors. This study may help provide early warning information and prevention for AR patients.

Abstract:Urban particulate air pollution is a known cause of adverse human health effects worldwide. Urumqi is a large oasis city in which rapid urbanization has caused a series of eco-environmental problems including serious air pollution, water shortage, dense population, excess energy consumption, and the creation of an urban heat island, among others. Coal is the most important source of energy and air pollutants that are poorly dispersed into the natural surroundings are the main reasons for serious pollution in the Urumqi urban area. Using differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS), aerosol levels were determined using the double optical path method. We found that aerosol concentrations in Urumqi increased rapidly in winter, and that the concentration of fine particles was much higher than that of coarse particles. The background aerosol concentration was highest in winter in the research area, and the air-flow speed had a significant impact on this because high speed surface winds that correspond to high air flows can transport the aerosol to other places. Some of the observed day-to-night differences may be caused by differing wind directions that transport air masses from different emission sources during the day and the night. Daily and seasonal differences in PM1.0 concentrations of different grades of polluted air were statistically analyzed using average daily concentration data for particles smaller than 10, 2.5 and 1.0 microns (PM10, PM2.5 and PM1.0), and meteorological observations for Urumqi, Tianshan District in 2010.

First-principles phase-stability study of fcc alloys in the Ti-Al system.

Abstract:We present the results of a first-principles study of the composition-temperature phase diagram for fcc-based Ti-Al alloys and the related structural and thermodynamic properties. In the approach taken in this study, local-density-functional theory is combined with the formalism of the cluster-variation method (CVM). In particular, the formation energy, bulk modulus, and atomic volume of metastable fcc Ti, fcc Al, and nine ordered fcc intermetallic Ti-Al compounds have been calculated using the full-potential linear-muffin-tin-orbital method. It is shown how the results of these calculations can be used to obtain a set of volume-dependent effective cluster interactions (ECI's) which parametrize the total energies of fcc-based Ti-Al alloys. We discuss in detail how these parameters can be used to determine formation energies, atomic volume, and bulk moduli for both ordered and disordered alloys, and as an example we calculate these properties for alloys containing random distributions of Ti and Al atoms as a function of composition. Furthermore, these ECI's are used in conjunction with the CVM to calculate the solid-state, fcc, composition-temperature phase diagram.

Abstract:A sampling campaign of aerosols over Urumqi from 2004 to 2007 with detailed and systematic analysis was carried out to investigate the severe air pollution in Urumqi, China, which is located nearby the upstream area of Asia dust. It was found that Urumqi city was the severest polluted city over the world. The average PM2.5 and TSP concentrations in the winter of 2007 were 187 and 385μgm−3 with maximum of 487 and 1313μgm−3, respectively, 12 times higher than USA standard for PM2.5 and 3 times the National Ambient Air Quality Standard of China for TSP. The city's industrial emissions of sulfur dioxide were converted to sulfate in the air, and sulfate-rich soil dust was transported to Urumqi's air from agricultural fields south of Jungger Basin and surrounding salt lake areas. The mixing of the local anthropogenic aerosol with the transported soil dust from outside the city was the main sources of the high concentration of sulfate, one of the main factors causing the heavy air pollution over Urumqi. The high concentration of ammonium and sulfate salts in the aerosol from both inside and outside city and the low wind speed might be the main factors to form the heavy haze over the Urumqi.
Temporal Distribution and Source Apportionment of Composition of Ambient PM2.5 in Urumqi, North-West China

Abstract:In order to identify the pollution characteristics and sources of PM2.5 in Urumqi, fine particulate matter samples were collected from September 2017 to August 2018, and the water-soluble ions (WSIs), organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and metal elements were analyzed. The results indicate that the annual mass concentration of PM2.5 in Urumqi was 158.85 ± 15.11 μg/m3, with the highest seasonal average in autumn (180.49 ± 87.22 μg/m3) and the lowest in summer (148.41 ± 52.60 μg/m3). SO42− (13.58 ± 16.4 μg/m3), NO3− (13.46 ± 17.5 μg/m3), and NH4+ (10.88 ± 12.2 μg/m3) were the most abundant WSIs, and the secondary inorganic ions (SNA = SO42− + NO3− + NH4+) accounted for 87.23% of the WSIs. The NO3−/SO42− ratio indicates that the contribution of stationary sources was dominant. The annual concentrations of OC and EC were 12.00 ± 4.4 μg/m3 and 5.00 ± 3.5 μg/m3, respectively, the OC/EC ratios in winter (2.55 ± 0.7), spring (3.43 ± 1.3), and summer (3.22 ± 1.1) were greater than 2, and there was the formation of secondary organic carbon (SOC). The correlation between OC and EC in spring in Urumqi (R2 = 0.53) was low. In the PM2.5, Al and Fe were the most abundant elements. The highest mass concentration season occurred in autumn, with mass concentrations of 15.11 ± 10.1 μg/m3 and 8.33 ± 6.9 μg/m3, respectively. The enrichment factor (EF) shows that most of the metal elements come from natural sources, and the Cd element mainly comes from anthropogenic sources. PAHs with a middle molecular weight were the main ones, and the annual average annual mass concentration of the PAHs was 451.35 ng/m3. The positive matrix factor model (PMF) source analysis shows that there are five main sources of PM2.5 in Urumqi, including crustal minerals, biomass combustion, coal combustion, vehicular transport, and secondary aerosols. The distribution percentages of these different sources were 19.2%, 10.2%, 12.1%, 8.2%, and 50.3%, respectively.

Abstract:Quantitative paleoclimate reconstruction based on surface soil pollen and climate records on a regional scale is widely applied as a standard approach to investigating past climate changes. This study aimed to explore the quantitative relationships between the distribution of pollen taxa in 438 pollen samples from surface soils at altitudes ranging from 190 m to 3235 m and 19 environmental parameters in northern Xinjiang, China, using ordination and correlation analyses. The results showed that mean annual precipitation (MAP), precipitation in July, mean annual temperature (MAT), mean temperature in July and mean annual wind speed were the main environmental factors influencing the surface pollen distribution. Pinus pollen dispersal and transportation were primarily affected by spring wind, suggesting that exotic pollen played an essential role in surface pollen distribution. Picea pollen, with a percentage and concentration of over 30% and 3000 grains/g, was distributed at sites with MAT and MAP of −5.1–1.2 °C and 212–459 mm, respectively. Artemisia and Chenopodiaceae, with percentages and concentrations of over 50% and 50,000 grains/g and 50% and 10,000 grains/g, respectively, were mainly distributed at sites with MAT and MAP of −1.9–9.1 °C and 145–416 mm, and − 3.2–8.9 °C and 129–449 mm, respectively, providing an accurate reference for paleoclimates reconstruction. This study presents information regarding the relationship between surface soil pollen and climate records, which may contribute to the reconstruction of historical climates, promote ecological development in Xinjiang, China, and assist in predicting future climate trends.

Abstract:Artemisia is the most important outdoor allergen throughout China. It can cause allergic rhinitis, asthma, or both of them. Since it was verified as an allergenic pollen in 1960, it was identified two times in the Chinese National Pollen Survey (1984, 2009). The first oral immunotherapy double-blinded trial for Artemisia pollen asthma research was conducted in China in 1989 and published in 1990. 40 years since that study, there have been many published research reports on Chinese Artemisia allergy. This review summarizes the information regarding the discovery of Artemisia as an allergenic pollen, pollen account, epidemiology, allergen components, immunological changes in hay fever patients, natural course from rhinitis to asthma, diagnosis, and immunotherapies in China.

Abstract:This paper presents the results of airborne pollen and spore trapping in Nanjing city, eastern China, using a Burkard pollen trap during two consecutive years (2013-2014). A total of 103 pollen and spore taxa were identified. Two concentration peaks are observed in the annual cycle, a spring peak dominated by arboreal pollen types (Morus, Cupressaceae, Pinus, Pterocarya, and Quercus) and a fall peak dominated by upland herbs (Compositae, Poaceae, Humulus, and Cruciferae). Wetland herbs and ferns dominate summer assemblages and winter assemblages are characterized by sporadic records of Artemisia, Chenopodiaceae, and Pinus. Strong year-to-year differences in measured pollen concentration are seen, probably in response to interyear differences in weather. Compared to long-term means, 2013 was comparatively hot and dry and 2014 had a higher than average number of rain days during the flowering periods. Rising temperatures in early spring are connected with the timing of flowering and therefore pollen release, while rainfall during the flowering period appeared to remove pollen from the air, leading to lower recorded pollen concentration values. Four taxa, Cupressaceae, Quercus, Pinus, and Humulus, were considered in more detail. Each has a different pattern of variation in pollen concentration between the studied years. Cross correlation between pollen concentration and daily temperature, relative humidity, and precipitation at lags from 0 to -30 days also showed different responses for each taxon, suggesting that pollen signal responses to weather conditions have to be considered at a taxon level rather than at the assemblage level.

Abstract:A sampling campaign of aerosols over Urumqi from 2001–2007 and soil samples in the surrounding areas were carried out to investigate the severe air pollution in Urumqi, a typical inland city, located in the center of Asia. Urumqi is one of the heavy polluted cities in the world, as the days of haze spanned over one third of the year and accounted for 60–80% of the heating period for the past 6 years. High concentration of fine aerosols, frequent occurrence, and rapid formation of heavy haze were the three main characteristics. With comparison of the pollution elements, As, Cd, and S, and the ratio of Ca/Al in aerosols and soils in those sites located on the south of Jungger Basin as tracers, it was found that As, Cd, and S highly enriched in the aerosols over urban Urumqi were not only from the re-suspended road dust but also from the soil transported from south of the Jungger Basin. Different from the most cities in China, the high concentration of sulfate in Urumqi was partially from the primary soil dust transported from the surrounding areas. The mixing of the local anthropogenic aerosols with the soil transported from outside the city was the main source of the high sulfate concentration. Ammonium salts were higher than the summed equivalents of SO 4 2− , NO 3 − , and Cl− in Urumqi and much higher than that in other Chinese cities. The total water soluble ions and the total ammonium salts were as high as 57.8% and 51.0% in PM2.5. The high concentration of soluble salts with high hygroscopicity, especially ammonium and sulfate salts, were the main factors contributing to the heavy haze over Urumqi.
Effects of pollen concentration on allergic rhinitis in children: A retrospective study from Beijing, a Chinese megacity

Abstract:With global climate change and rapid urbanization, the prevalence of allergic diseases caused by pollen is rising dramatically worldwide with unprecedented complexity and severity, especially for children in mega-cities. However, because of the lack of long time-series pollen concentrations data, the accurate evaluation of the impact of pollen on allergic rhinitis (AR) was scarce in the Chinese metropolis. A generalized additive model was used to assess the effect of pollen concentration on pediatric AR outpatient visits in Beijing from 2014 to 2019. A stratified analysis of 10 pollen species and age-gender-specific groups was also conducted during the spring and summer-autumn peak pollen periods separately. Positive associations between pollen concentration and pediatric AR varied with the season and pollen species were detected. Although the average daily pollen concentration is higher during the spring tree pollen peak, the influence was stronger at the summer-autumn weed pollen peak with the maximum relative risk 1.010 (95% CI 1.009, 1.011), which was higher than the greatest relative risk, 1.003 (95% CI 1.002, 1.004) in the spring peak. The significant adverse effects can be sustained to lag10 during the study period, and longer in the summer-autumn peak (lag13) than in the spring peak (lag8). There are thresholds for the health effects and they varied between seasons. The significant effect appeared when the pollen concentration was higher than 3.74 × 105 grain·m-2·d-1 during the spring tree pollen peaks and 4.70 × 104 grain·m-2·d-1 during the summer-autumn weed pollen peaks. The stratified results suggested that the species-specific effects were heterogeneous. It further highlights that enough attention should be paid to the problem of pollen allergy in children, especially school-aged children aged 7-18 years and weed pollen in the summer-autumn peak pollen period. These findings provide a more accurate reference for the rational coordination of medical resources and improvement of public health.
