Abstract:Coastal ecosystems are suffering increasing degradation in many parts of the world and the ecological integrity and biodiversity of those ecosystems have been greatly threatened due to the high load of pollutants produced largely through anthropogenic processes. Agricultural, industrial and domestic applications pollution mainly affect coastal zones via riverine inputs from contaminated urban and rural areas near shore, atmospheric deposition and direct dumping. Beside the different other pollutants, excessive nutrients have become major concerns which can completely change the functioning and appearance of coastal ecosystems. A variety of plants complete the ecological system of coasts and coastal vegetation may even govern the microbial processes and greenhouse gas emissions. With the need to better protect and manage the coastal areas, it is important to understand the decisive microbial processes of nutrients cycling in coastal ecosystem, especially in the face of the changing climate.The aim of this study was to assess the abundances of soil bacteria and archaea and their potential to perform different carbon and nitrogen cycling processes in coastal zones and relate these nutrient transformation processes to greenhouse gas emissions. The study was carried out in Estonian and Chinese coasts which were affected by brackish water (mixed saline and fresh water) because of riverine inputs. Twice a month during the most intensive vegetation period, the gas samples (CO2, CH4, and N2O) were taken and different parameters of plant (Schoenoplectus tabernaemontanii and Phragmites australis in Estonia; Spartina alterniflora and Scirpus mariqueter in China) and water were measured in situ. Soil (from the 0&#8211;10 cm top layer) and plant samples were collected in the end of study. Besides different chemical parameters measured of soil samples, the archaeal and bacterial community abundance was evaluated by quantitative PCR. To characterise methane cycle, the abundances of methanogenic marker gene mcrA and methanotrophic marker gene pmoA were assessed. Genetic potential of nitrogen transformation processes was evaluated by targeting the following functional genes: bacterial, archaeal and COMAMMOX(complete oxidation of ammonium)-specific amoA (nitrification); nirS, nirK, nosZ clade I and nosZ clade II (denitrification); nifH (N2 fixation); nrfA (DNRA, dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium); ANAMMOX- (anaerobic ammonium oxidation), and n-damo-specific 16S rRNA genes (nitrite dependent anaerobic methane oxidation).The results concluded that different plant species played a critical role in mediating gas emissions, where their age composition and biomass was important. Relevance of n-damo process and its high genetic potential for CH4 reduction was detected in coastal areas. Still, four times higher CH4 emissions were observed on the Chinese coast compared to Estonia. DNRA process showed the greatest genetic potential in the Chinese research area, but this process was less likely to occur in the soil of Estonian Phragmites australis. As a result of nitrification and denitrification, N2O was emitted from the coasts to the atmosphere.
Multiple microbial guilds mediate soil methane cycling along a wetland salinity gradient

Abstract:ABSTRACT Estuarine wetlands harbor considerable carbon stocks, but rising sea levels could affect their ability to sequester soil carbon as well as their potential to emit methane (CH 4 ). While sulfate loading from seawater intrusion may reduce CH 4 production due to the higher energy yield of microbial sulfate reduction, existing studies suggest other factors are likely at play. Our study of 11 wetland complexes spanning a natural salinity and productivity gradient across the San Francisco Bay and Delta found that while CH 4 fluxes generally declined with salinity, they were highest in oligohaline wetlands (ca. 3-ppt salinity). Methanogens and methanogenesis genes were weakly correlated with CH 4 fluxes but alone did not explain the highest rates observed. Taxonomic and functional gene data suggested that other microbial guilds that influence carbon and nitrogen cycling need to be accounted for to better predict CH 4 fluxes at landscape scales. Higher methane production occurring near the freshwater boundary with slight salinization (and sulfate incursion) might result from increased sulfate-reducing fermenter and syntrophic populations, which can produce substrates used by methanogens. Moreover, higher salinities can solubilize ionically bound ammonium abundant in the lower salinity wetland soils examined here, which could inhibit methanotrophs and potentially contribute to greater CH 4 fluxes observed in oligohaline sediments. IMPORTANCE Low-level salinity intrusion could increase CH4 flux in tidal freshwater wetlands, while higher levels of salinization might instead decrease CH4 fluxes. High CH4 emissions in oligohaline sites are concerning because seawater intrusion will cause tidal freshwater wetlands to become oligohaline. Methanogenesis genes alone did not account for landscape patterns of CH4 fluxes, suggesting mechanisms altering methanogenesis, methanotrophy, nitrogen cycling, and ammonium release, and increasing decomposition and syntrophic bacterial populations could contribute to increases in net CH4 flux at oligohaline salinities. Improved understanding of these influences on net CH4 emissions could improve restoration efforts and accounting of carbon sequestration in estuarine wetlands. More pristine reference sites may have older and more abundant organic matter with higher carbon:nitrogen compared to wetlands impacted by agricultural activity and may present different interactions between salinity and CH4. This distinction might be critical for modeling efforts to scale up biogeochemical process interactions in estuarine wetlands.

CH4 and N2O Emissions from Spartina Alterniflora and Phragmites Australis in Experimental Mesocosms.

Abstract:Spartina alterniflora, a perennial grass with C(4)-photosynthesis, shows great invading potential in the coastal ecosystems in the east of China. We compared trace gas emissions from S. alterniflora with those from a native C(3) plant, Phragmites australis, by establishing brackish marsh mesocosms to experimentally assess the effects of plant species (S. alterniflora vs. P. australis), flooding status (submerged vs. non-submerged), and clipping (plants clipped or not) on trace gas emissions. The results show that trace gas emission rates were higher in S. alterniflora than P. australis mesocosms due to the higher biomass and density of the former, which could fix more available substrates to the soil and potentially emit more trace gases. Meanwhile, trace gas emission rates were higher in non-submerged than submerged soils, suggesting that water might act as a diffusion barrier in the brackish marsh mesocosms. Interestingly, methane (CH(4)) emission rates were lower in clipped non-submerged mesocosms than in non-clipped submerged mesocosms, but nitrous oxide (N(2)O) emissions were enhanced. CH(4) emissions were significantly correlated with the plant biomass and stem density (R(2)>0.48, P<0.05) for both species, suggesting that both the two species might play important roles in CH(4) production and transport and also act as suppliers of easily available substrates for the methanogenic bacteria in wetland ecosystems. N(2)O emissions, however, were not significantly correlated with plant biomass and density (P>0.05).

Abstract:The coastal wetland ecosystems are important in the global carbon and nitrogen cycle and global climate change. For higher fragility of coastal wetlands induced by human activities, the roles of coastal wetland ecosystems in CH4 and N2O emissions are becoming more important. This study used a DNDC model to simulate current and future CH4 and N2O emissions of coastal wetlands in four sites along the latitude in China. The simulation results showed that different vegetation zones, including bare beach, Spartina beach, and Phragmites beach, produced different emissions of CH4 and N2O in the same latitude region. Correlation analysis indicated that vegetation types, water level, temperature, and soil organic carbon content are the main factors affecting emissions of CH4 and N2O in coastal wetlands.

Abstract:As an important source of atmospheric methane, methane emissions from coastal wetlands are affected by many factors. However, the methane emission process and interrelated coupling mechanisms in coastal wetland soils of a variety of environments remain unclear owing to complex interactions between intensified anthropogenic activities and climate change in recent years. In this study, we investigated methane cycling processes and the response mechanisms of environmental and microbial factors in soils at different depths under four typical coastal wetland vegetation types of the Yellow River Delta, China, using laboratory culture and molecular biology techniques. Our results show that methane generation pathways differed among the different soil layers, and that the methane emission process has a special response to soil N compounds (NO 3 − , NH 4 + ). We found that nitrogen can indirectly affect methane emission by impacting key physicochemical properties (pH, oxidation reduction potential, etc.) and some functional communities ( mcrA , ANME-2d, sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), narG , nosZ II). Methane production processes in shallow soils compete closely with sulfate reduction processes, while methane emissions facilitated in deeper soils due to denitrification processes. We believe that our results provide a reference for future research and wetland management practices that seek to mitigate the global greenhouse effect and climate change.

Microbial ecology and site characteristics underlie differences in salinity-methane relationships in coastal wetlands

Abstract:Methane (CH ) is a potent greenhouse gas emitted by archaea in anaerobic environments such as wetland soils. Tidal freshwater wetlands are predicted to become increasingly saline as sea levels rise due to climate change. Previous work has shown that increases in salinity generally decrease CH emissions, but with considerable variation, including instances where salinization increased CH flux. We measured microbial community composition, biogeochemistry, and CH flux from field samples and lab experiments from four different sites across a wide geographic range. We sought to assess how site differences and microbial ecology affect how CH emissions are influenced by salinization. CH flux was generally, but not always, positively correlated with CO flux, soil carbon, ammonium, phosphate, and pH. Methanogen guilds were positively correlated with CH flux across all sites, while methanotroph guilds were both positively and negatively correlated with CH depending on site. There was mixed support for negative relationships between CH fluxes and concentrations of alternative electron acceptors and abundances of taxa that reduce them. CH /salinity relationships ranged from negative, to neutral, to positive and appeared to be influenced by site characteristics such as pH and plant composition, which also likely contributed to site differences in microbial communities. The activity of site-specific microbes that may respond differently to low-level salinity increases is likely an important driver of CH /salinity relationships. Our results suggest several factors that make it difficult to generalize CH /salinity relationships and highlight the need for paired microbial and flux measurements across a broader range of sites.

Abstract:Wetland sediment is an important nitrogen pool and a source of the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O). Modification of coastal wetland landscape due to plant invasion and aquaculture activities may drastically change this N pool and the related dynamics of N2O. This study measured the sediment properties, N2O production and relevant functional gene abundances in 21 coastal wetlands across five provinces along the tropical-subtropical gradient in China, which all had experienced the same sequence of habitat transformation from native mudflats (MFs) to invasive Spartina alterniflora marshes (SAs) and subsequently to aquaculture ponds (APs). Our results showed that change from MFs to SAs increased the availability of NH4+-N and NO3--N and the abundance of functional genes related to N2O production (amoA, nirK, nosZ Ⅰ, and nosZ Ⅱ), whereas conversion of SAs to APs resulted in the opposite changes. Invasion of MFs by S. alterniflora increased N2O production potential by 127.9%, whereas converting SAs to APs decreased it by 30.4%. Based on structural equation modelling, nitrogen substrate availability and abundance of ammonia oxidizers were the key factors driving the change in sediment N2O production potential in these wetlands. This study revealed the main effect patterns of habitat modification on sediment biogeochemistry and N2O production across a broad geographical and climate gradient. These findings will help large-scale mapping and assessing landscape change effects on sediment properties and greenhouse gas emissions along the coast.

Abstract:Wetlands are the largest natural source of terrestrial CH 4 emissions. Afforestation can enhance soil CH 4 oxidation and decrease methanogenesis, yet the driving mechanisms leading to these effects remain unclear. We analyzed the structures of communities of methanogenic and methanotrophic microbes, quantification of mcr A and pmo A genes, the soil microbial metagenome, soil properties and CH 4 fluxes in afforested and non-afforested areas in the marshland of the Yangtze River. Compared to the non-afforested land use types, net CH 4 emission decreased from bare land, natural vegetation and 5-year forest plantation and transitioned to net CH 4 sinks in the 10- and 20-year forest plantations. Both abundances of mcr A and pmo A genes decreased significantly with increasing plantation age. By combining random forest analysis and structural equation modeling, our results provide evidence for an important role of the abundance of functional genes related to methane production in explaining the net CH 4 flux in this ecosystem. The structures of methanogenic and methanotrophic microbial communities were of lower importance as explanatory factors than functional genes in terms of in situ CH 4 flux. We also found a substantial interaction between functional genes and soil properties in the control of CH 4 flux, particularly soil particle size. Our study provides empirical evidence that microbial community function has more explanatory power than taxonomic microbial community structure with respect to in situ CH 4 fluxes. This suggests that focusing on gene abundances obtained, e.g., through metagenomics or quantitative/digital PCR could be more effective than community profiling in predicting CH 4 fluxes, and such data should be considered for ecosystem modeling.

Abstract:Freshwater wetlands of the temperate north are exposed to a range of pollutants that may alter their function, including nitrogen (N)-rich agricultural and urban runoff, seawater intrusion, and road salt contamination, though it is largely unknown how these drivers of change interact with the vegetation to affect wetland carbon (C) fluxes and microbial communities. We implemented a full factorial mesocosm (378.5 L tanks) experiment investigating C-related responses to three common wetland plants of eastern North America (Phragmites australis, Spartina pectinata, Typha latifolia), and four water quality treatments (fresh water control, N, road salt, sea salt). During the 2017 growing season, we quantified carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) fluxes, above- and below-ground biomass, root porosity, light penetration, pore water chemistry (NH4+, NO3-, SO4-2, Cl-, DOC), soil C mineralization, as well as sediment microbial communities via 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Relative to freshwater controls, N enrichment stimulated plant biomass, which in turn increased CO2 uptake and reduced light penetration, especially in Spartina stands. Root porosity was not affected by water quality, but was positively correlated with CH4 emissions, suggesting that plants can be important conduits for CH4 from anoxic sediment to the atmosphere. Sediment microbial composition was largely unaffected by N addition, whereas salt amendments induced structural shifts, reduced sediment community diversity, and reduced C mineralization rates, presumably due to osmotic stress. Methane emissions were suppressed by sea salt, but not road salt, providing evidence for the additional chemical control (SO4-2 availability) on this microbial-mediated process. Thus, N may have stimulated plant activity while salting treatments preferentially enriched specific microbial populations. Together our findings underpin the utility of combining plant and microbial responses, and highlight the need for more integrative studies to predict the consequences of a changing environment on freshwater wetlands.

Nitrogen input weakens the control of inundation frequency on soil organic carbon loss in a tidal salt marsh

Abstract:The soil carbon (C) sequestration capacity of salt marshes is of considerable importance with respect to the mitigatiing the potentially detrimental consequences of global climate change. Given that tidal salt marshes are subjected to periodic cycles of inundation, it is assumed that soil C cycle in these marshes is expected to be controlled to varing extent by changes in soil moisture and salinity induced by the alternating patterns of drying and rewetting. In addition, with increases in the extent and severity of nitrogen (N) eutrophication becomes serious, we predicted that soil organic carbon (SOC) loss in tidal salt marshes is likely to be highly responsive to increased N loading. In this study, we conducted a two-factor mesocosm experiment (simulated inundation and N input in a tidal salt marsh) to determine the interactive effects of N eutrophication and inundation frequency on CO2 and CH4 emissions and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) contents. Our results showed that increased inundation frequency led to lower levels of CO2 emission but greater CH4 emission, whereas N input weakened the effects of changes in inundation frequency on CO2 and CH4 emissions. Moreover, N input was found to modify CO2 and CH4 emission in response to variations in soil moisture. We also observed an enhancement of soil DOC loss in response to increasing inundation frequency, and that DOC loss in the surface soil was considerably greater than that in subsurface soil. Further, as inundation frequency increased, we detected changes in the relationship between soil DOC and CO2 and CH4. Our findings highlighted that vertical variation in soil moisture induced by inundation is a key factor controlling SOC loss in tidal salt marshes, although N input can weaken this control.
Seasonal and Spatial Dynamics of Greenhouse Gas Emissions under Various Vegetation Covers in a Coastal Saline Wetland in Southeast China

Abstract:Coastal saline wetlands are recognized as prominent sources of greenhouse gas emissions. However, insufficient attention has been paid to the effect of coastal wetlands in mitigating global warming caused by greenhouse gases in China. This study aims to investigate how vegetation and soil parameters affect greenhouse gas emissions in a coastal saline wetland. Fluxes of CO2, CH4, and N2O were measured simultaneously in situ using the closed static chamber technique in four different coastal tidal flats, namely, mud flat, Spartina alterniflora flat, Suaeda glauca flat, and grass flat. The measurements were obtained from September 2012 to August 2013 in the Yancheng coastal wetland, southeast China. The average fluxes across all seasons and flats varied from 10.7 to 2297.6 mg CO2 m(-2) h(-1) (ecosystem respiration), from -0.368 to 4.959 mg CH4 m(-2) h(-1), and from 1.5 to 65.7 mu g N2O m(-2) h(-1). Higher CO2 and CH4 fluxes were observed during the summer and autumn seasons. However, the seasonal change of the N2O fluxes was complicated. For the S. alterniflora and grass flats, the highest emissions were observed during summer. For the mud and S. glauca flats, the emissions peaked during winter. The spatial variations of the three greenhouse gas fluxes in the coastal saline wetland primarily depended on vegetation type. The greenhouse gas fluxes from the three tidal flats with vegetation covers (S, alterniflora, S. glauca, and grass flats) were higher than those from the mud flat. Higher CO2 emissions were observed in the S. alterniflora flat than those in the other flats because of the higher carbon sequestration rate, together with higher net primary production and aboveground biomass. However, CH4 and N2O emissions were highest in the grass flat, followed by the S. alterniflora flat. The effects of tidal flats on the CH4 and N2O emissions differed according to the season. The S. alterniflora invasion increased the CO2 emission while slightly lowering the CH4 fluxes, compared with that of native plant communities dominated by Phragmites. Results also suggested that S. alterniflora had the highest global warming potential among the tidal flats in the coastal saline wetland. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Greenhouse gas emissions from intact riparian wetland soil columns continuously loaded with nitrate solution: a laboratory microcosm study

Abstract:In this study, we aimed at determining greenhouse gas (GHG) (CO2, CH4, and N2O) fluxes exchange between the soil collected from sites dominated by different vegetation types (Calamagrostis epigeios, Phragmites australis, and Carex schnimdtii) in nitrogenous loaded riparian wetland and the atmosphere. The intact soil columns collected from the wetland were incubated in laboratory and continuously treated with \( {\mathrm{NO}}_3^{-} \)-enriched water simulating downward surface water percolating through the soil to become groundwater in a natural system. This study revealed that the soil collected from the site dominated by C. epigeios was net CO2 and N2O sources, whereas the soil from P. australis and C. schnimdtii were net sinks of CO2 and N2O, respectively. The soil from the site dominated by C. schnimdtii had the highest climate impact, as it had the highest global warming potential (GWP) compared with the other sites. Our study indicates that total organic carbon and \( {\mathrm{NO}}_3^{-} \) concentration in the soil water has great influence on GHG fluxes. Carbon dioxide (CO2) and N2O fluxes were accelerated by the availability of higher \( {\mathrm{NO}}_3^{-} \) concentration in soil water. On the other hand, higher \( {\mathrm{NO}}_3^{-} \) concentration in soil water favors CH4 oxidation, hence the low CH4 production. Temporally, CO2 fluxes were relatively higher in the first 15 days and reduced gradually likely due to a decline in organic carbon. The finding of this study implies that higher \( {\mathrm{NO}}_3^{-} \) concentration in wetland soil, caused by human activities, could increase N2O and CO2 emissions from the soil. Abstract:Anthropogenic deposition of nitrogen (N) and elevated CO 2 ( ea CO 2 ) are expected to increase continuously and rapidly in the near future and influence global carbon cycling. These parameters affect the ecosystem by regulating the microbial community and contribute to soil organic matter decomposition. The study was performed to understand the effects of N additions (4 and 6mgl −1 ) and ea CO 2 (700 ppm) on carbon (C)/nitrogen (N) content in the soil, microbial community, and plant biomass ( Alternanthera philoxeroides species). The results showed that when the atmospheric CO 2 concentration was raised, the total organic carbon (TOC) in the soil statistically increased ( P < 0.05) by 4% and 3% under low and high N additions respectively, while the inorganic carbon content also increased by 1% and 3% ( P > 0.05) under the same conditions. The increase in the soil TOC content was a result of the movement of carbon from water to the soil due to the presence of vascular tissues of plants in the water. The redundancy analysis (RDA) results revealed that the presence of plant species was responsible for the carbon content increment in the soil. The plant biomass content increased by 30.96% ( P = 0.081) and 31.36%, ( P = 0.002) under low and high N addition respectively due to the increment in atmospheric CO 2 . The nitrogen content in the plant species decreased ( p > 0.05) by 8.62% and 6.25% at low and high N addition respectively when atmospheric CO 2 was raised. This suggests that soil microbes competed with the plants for inorganic nitrogen in the soil and the microbes used up the inorganic nitrogen before it got to the plants. The gram-positive bacteria and fungi population decreased under high N addition and ea CO 2 while gram-negative bacteria increased, suggesting that N additions and ea CO 2 affected the microbial function and correlated with the nitrogen reduction in the soil. The results from this study serve as a guide to researchers and stakeholders in making policies with regard to the constant increasing CO 2 concentration in the atmosphere.

Modeling impacts of saltwater intrusion on methane and nitrous oxide emissions in tidal forested wetlands

Abstract:Emissions of methane (CH4 ) and nitrous oxide (N2 O) from soils to the atmosphere can offset the benefits of carbon sequestration for climate change mitigation. While past study has suggested that both CH4 and N2 O emissions from tidal freshwater forested wetlands (TFFW) are generally low, the impacts of coastal droughts and drought-induced saltwater intrusion on CH4 and N2 O emissions remain unclear. In this study, a process-driven biogeochemistry model, Tidal Freshwater Wetland DeNitrification-DeComposition (TFW-DNDC), was applied to examine the responses of CH4 and N2 O emissions to episodic drought-induced saltwater intrusion in TFFW along the Waccamaw River and Savannah River, USA. These sites encompass landscape gradients of both surface and porewater salinity as influenced by Atlantic Ocean tides superimposed on periodic droughts. Surprisingly, CH4 and N2 O emission responsiveness to coastal droughts and drought-induced saltwater intrusion varied greatly between river systems and among local geomorphologic settings. This reflected the complexity of wetland CH4 and N2 O emissions and suggests that simple linkages to salinity may not always be relevant, as non-linear relationships dominated our simulations. Along the Savannah River, N2 O emissions in the moderate-oligohaline tidal forest site tended to increase dramatically under the drought condition, while CH4 emission decreased. For the Waccamaw River, emissions of both CH4 and N2 O in the moderate-oligohaline tidal forest site tended to decrease under the drought condition, but the capacity of the moderate-oligohaline tidal forest to serve as a carbon sink was substantially reduced due to significant declines in net primary productivity and soil organic carbon sequestration rates as salinity killed the dominant freshwater vegetation. These changes in fluxes of CH4 and N2 O reflect crucial synergistic effects of soil salinity and water level on C and N dynamics in TFFW due to drought-induced seawater intrusion.
Nitrogen Cycling in Plant and Soil Subsystems is Driven by Changes in Soil Salinity Following Coastal Embankment in Typical Coastal Saltmarsh Ecosystems of Eastern China

Abstract:Recently, coastal land reclamation through the use of embankments has increased worldwide, and its impacts on ecosystem processes and functionality have been widely reported. However, the ecosystem nitrogen (N) cycling turnover processes following the establishment of coastal embankments remain unknown. For this study, we investigated stocks of various types of N in soils, N storage in plant subsystems, the microbial immobilization and mineralization of N, as well as soil physiochemical properties in embanked and adjacent unembanked Spartina alterniflora, Suaeda salsa, and Phragmites australis saltmarshes in the coastal wetlands of China. Coastal embankments in a S. alterniflora saltmarsh significantly decreased the total plant N storage by 50.24%, concentrations of total soil organic N (SON) by 55.16%, ammonia nitrogen (NH4-N) by 32.33%, nitrite nitrogen (NO2-N) by 41.23%, nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N) by 13.38%, and the value of soil net ammonification (RA) by 83.49%. However, in P. australis saltmarshes they significantly increased the total plant N storage by 160.24%, concentrations of SON by 57.28%, NH4-N by 7.89%, NO2-N by 101.76%, NO3-N by 32.05%, and the value of RA by 392.95%. Nevertheless, there were no significant differences in N cycling following the establishment of coastal embankments in S. salsa saltmarshes. Significant changes in the organic and inorganic soil N pools of S. alterniflora and P. australis saltmarshes were driven by plant residue inputs, which were significantly affected by decreasing soil salinity in these coastal wetlands. Furthermore, our results indicated that coastal embankments altered the immobilization of soil N and mineralization of microorganisms by influencing the growth and activities of soil microbes, which were primarily associated with changes in soil organic and inorganic N pools following the development of coastal embankments. In summary, alterations in the organic N inputs of plants were initiated by the dramatically decreased soil salinity, which was the main determinant that drove N cycling in the soil subsystems of coastal wetlands subsequent to the establishment of coastal embankments.

Abstract:The invasions of the alien species such as Spartina alterniflora along the northern Jiangsu coastlines have posed a threat to biodiversity and the ecosystem function. Yet, limited attention has been given to their potential influence on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, including the diurnal variations of GHG fluxes that are fundamental in estimating the carbon and nitrogen budget. In this study, we examined the diurnal variation in fluxes of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) from a S. alterniflora intertidal flat in June, October, and December of 2013 and April of 2014 representing the summer, autumn, winter, and spring seasons, respectively. We found that the average CH4 fluxes on the diurnal scale were positive during the growing season while negative otherwise. The tidal flat of S. alterniflora acted as a source of CH4 in summer (June) and a combination of source and sink in other seasons. We observed higher diurnal variations in the CO2 and N2O fluxes during the growing season (1 536.5 mg CO2 m–2 h–1 and 25.6 μg N2O m–2 h–1) compared with those measured in the non-growing season (379.1 mg CO2 m–2 h–1 and 16.5 μg N2O m–2 h–1). The mean fluxes of CH4 were higher at night than that in the daytime during all the seasons but October. The diurnal variation in the fluxes of CO2 in June and N2O in December fluctuated more than that in October and April. However, two peak curves in October and April were observed for the diurnal changes in CO2 and N2O fluxes (prominent peaks were found in the morning of October and in the afternoon of April, respectively). The highest diurnal variation in the N2O fluxes took place at 15:00 (86.4 μg N2O m–2 h–1) in June with an unimodal distribution. Water logging in October increased the emission of CO2 (especially at nighttime), yet decreased N2O and CH4 emissions to a different degree on the daily scale because of the restrained diffusion rates of the gases. The seasonal and diurnal variations of CH4 and CO2 fluxes did not correlate to the air and soil temperatures, whereas the seasonal and diurnal variation of the fluxes of N2O in June exhibited a significant correlation with air temperature. When N2O and CH4 fluxes were converted to CO2-e equivalents, the emissions of N2O had a remarkable potential to impact the global warming. The mean daily flux (MF) and total daily flux (TDF) were higher in the growing season, nevertheless, the MF and TDF of CO2 were higher in October and those of CH4 and N2O were higher in June. In spite of the difference in the optimal sampling times throughout the observation period, our results obtained have implications for sampling and scaling strategies in estimating the GHG fluxes in coastal saline wetlands.

Abstract:Ensuring agricultural security and preserving the health of wetland ecosystems are crucial concerns facing northeast China. However, the adverse effects of environmental pollution, especially nitrogen (N), caused by prolonged agricultural development on the health of marsh wetlands cannot be systematically recognized. To address this issue, an 18-year trial with four different levels of N application was carried out in a typical area of the Northeast region: 0, 6, 12, and 24 gN·m-2·a-1 (referred to as CK, N6, N12, and N24, respectively) to investigate changes in wetland ecological functioning. The results showed that long-term N input significantly enhanced soil N availability. High-level of N addition (N24) significantly reduced soil bacterial richness in October, while fungal diversity was significantly higher in June than in October for both control and N6 treatments. The main environmental factors affecting microorganisms in June were TN, NH4+, and EC, while bacterial and fungal communities were influenced by TN and Leaf Area Index (LAI), respectively, in October. It was found that the AN16S gene was significantly higher in June than in October, indicating that summer is the critical time for N removal in the wetland. N addition significantly reduced the abundance of the NIFH gene and decreased the N fixation potential of the wetland. In June, low and medium levels of N inputs promoted denitrification processes in the wetland and elevated the wetland N2O emission potential. The abundance of NARG, NIRK, and NOSZ genes decreased significantly in October compared to June, indicating a decrease in the wetland N2O emission potential. Additionally, it was observed that soil methanotrophs were positively affected by NH4+ and TN in October, thereby reducing the wetland CH4 emission potential. Our research provides a systematic understanding of the impact of agricultural N pollution on marsh wetlands, which can inform strategies to protect wetland health.
The Effects of Climate Warming and Exogenous Nitrogen Input on Soil N2o Emissions from Mangroves

Abstract:The paucity of studies on nitrous oxide (N2O) dynamics with rising temperatures and nitrogen (N)-based eutrophication makes it challenging to evaluate the role of mangroves in mitigating climate change. Here, a 3year mesocosm experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of climate warming (+3 degrees C) and excessive N input (25 mg N L- 1) on soil N2O emissions from two mangroves (Avicennia marina and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza). We found that warming and N input alone significantly increased soil N2O emissions from both mangroves, while the interactive effects of warming and N input on soil N2O emissions were affected by mangrove species. Warming mitigated the positive effect of N input on soil N2O emissions from A. marina; and amplified the effect of N input on soil N2O emissions from B. gymnorrhiza, suggesting that the response of soil N2O emissions to these global change factors is species-dependent. Stable isotopic signature analysis revealed that both warming and N input significantly increased the relative contribution of nitrification to N2O emissions from A. marina; whereas N input, rather than warming, significantly changed the relative contribution of nitrification in B. gymnorrhiza. This could be attributed to the differential changes in soil environmental conditions, plant growth and the microbial structure of the two mangroves. Overall, this study highlights the role of mangrove species in modifying the effects of warming and N input on soil N2O emissions, which should be considered when accurately projecting N2O emissions from mangroves. Furthermore, considering the low N2O emissions from background sediments and the common N limitation across mangroves, our findings suggest that climate warming and exogenous N input may lead to a surge of N2O emissions from mangroves, especially those that are seriously affected by human activities.

Abstract:CH4 emissions could vary with biotic and abiotic factors at different time scales. However, little is known about temporal dynamics of CH4 flux and its controls in coastal marshes. In this study, CH4 flux was continuously measured with the eddy covariance technique for 2 years in a subtropical salt marsh in eastern China. Wavelet analysis was applied to explore the multi-scale variations of CH4 flux and its controls. Additionally, partial wavelet coherence was used to disentangle confounding effects of measured variables. No consistent diurnal pattern was found in CH4 fluxes. However, the hot-moments of CH4 flux were observed after nighttime high tide on days near the spring tide. Periodic dynamics were also observed at multi-day, semilunar and seasonal scales. Tide height in summer had a negative effect on CH4 flux at the semilunar scale. Air temperature explained most variations in CH4 fluxes at the multi-day scale but CH4 flux was mainly controlled by PAR and GEP at the seasonal scale. Air temperature explained 48% and 56% of annual variations in CH4 fluxes in 2011 and 2012, respectively. In total, the salt marsh acted as a CH4 source (17.6 ± 3.0 g C–CH4 m−2 year−1), which was higher than most studies report for inland wetlands. Our results show that CH4 fluxes exhibit multiple periodicities and its controls vary with time scale; moreover, CH4 flux is strongly modified by tide. This study emphasizes the importance of ecosystem-specific measurements of CH4 fluxes, and more work is needed to estimate regional CH4 budgets.
