Abstract:Rapid urbanization and industrialization result in serious contamination of soil with toxic metals such as lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd), which can lead to deleterious health impacts in the exposed population. This study aimed to investigate Pb and Cd contamination in agricultural soils and vegetables in five different agricultural sites in Pakistan. The metal transfer from soil-to-plant, average daily intake of metals, and health risk index (HRI) were also characterized. The Pb concentrations for all soils were below the maximum allowable limits (MAL 350 mg kg-1) set by State Environmental Protection Administration of China (SEPA), for soils in China, while Cd concentrations in the soils were exceeded the MAL (61.7-73.7% and 4.39-34.3%) set by SEPA (0.6 mg kg-), and European Union, (1.5 mg kg-1) respectively. The mean Pb concentration in edible parts of vegetables ranged from 1.8 to 11 mg kg-1. The Pb concentrations for leafy vegetables were higher than the fruiting and pulpy vegetables. The Pb concentrations exceeded the MAL (0.3 mg kg-1) for leafy vegetables and the 0.1 mg kg-1 MAL for fruity and rooty/tuber vegetables set by FAO/WHO-CODEX. Likewise, all vegetables except Pisum sativum (0.12 mg kg-1) contained Cd concentrations that exceeded the MAL set by SEPA. The HRI values for Pb and Cd were <1 for both adults and children for most of the vegetable species except Luffa acutangula, Solanum lycopersicum, Benincasa hispada, Momordi charantia, Aesculantus malvaceae, Cucumis sativus, Praecitrullus fistulosus, Brassica oleracea, and Colocasia esculanta for children. Based on these results, consumption of these Pb and Cd contaminated vegetables poses a potential health risk to the local consumers.

Abstract:Human health is the main concern related to use of crop products irrigated with contaminated irrigation sources. Present research has been conducted to explore heavy metal status of sewage and industrial wastewater being used up for irrigation purpose in the peri-urban areas of the district Dera Ghazi Khan which has not been explored widely before. The analysis also followed heavy metal detection in the subsequent irrigated soil and vegetables/crop plants in relation to assessment of health risk to the consumer to plan the future monitoring in this area. An unremitting boost of heavy metals into the environment from wastewater irrigation has become a global issue. These heavy metals enter the food chain and pose health assumptions to consumers upon utilization. In the present study, an investigation has been conducted to determine metal concentrations in the wastewater, soil, and different plant species. For wastewater samples, pH, total dissolved solids (TDS), electrical conductivity (EC), and selected heavy metals such as Al, As, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, Zn, and Ni were determined. The mean values of heavy metals in the soil samples were within the WHO/FAO safe limit, while Cr and Pb were the most frequent (100%) among the metals. However, differentiating the sites, the concentration of Cr and Cu, Ni, and Fe were elevated. The metal transfer was highly effective from soil to the growing plants i.e. brinjal, red corn, wheat, tomato, and spinach than other plant species. Among the metals, Cr, Ni, Mn, and Pb in plant samples were exceeding the WHO/FAO safe limit. Health risk index (HRI) have revealed the possible potential risk of heavy metal contaminated plant species in the order of spinach (6.4) > wheat (6.4) > brinjal (5.9) > tomato (4.7) > red corn (4.5) > apple gourd (4.3) > white corn (3.8) > cabbage (3.1) > luffa (2.9). Likewise, HRI of different metals was calculated as Cu (19.6) > Zn (17.9) > Cr (2.95) > Ni (0.85) > Mn (0.48) > Fe (0.15) > Cd (0.11) > Pb (0.05) > As (0.00001). The level of HRI through the use of dietary plants revealed an elevated risk level than the acceptable limit (HRI > 1) for Cu > Zn > Cr in adults. Our findings suggest that there would be a serious health risk to the consumers due to the consumption of these plant species being irrigated with the wastewater. Therefore, a strict regulatory mechanism is proposed for the safety of food plants in the study area including monitoring and recycling of crop plants, and building water treatment plants to remove pollutants and clean wastewater.

Abstract:The widespread use of pesticides containing heavy metals on agricultural farms has evolved into a significant source of metal pollution in food crops. In Paki, Nigeria, this study investigated the probable health dangers linked with consuming heavy metals contaminated crops fumigated with pesticides containing metals and grown exclusively from borehole water sources. An atomic absorption spectrometry test was used to determine the amounts of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Cr, Cu, and Zn) in the (root, stem, leaf, and fruit) of certain selected food crops and soil. Potential non-cancer health risks (hazard quotient and hazard index) and target cancer risk (TCR) were computed based on USEPA 2019 guidelines. Heavy metals were found in all of the tested food crops and ranged from 1.00 ± 0.04 to 9.50 ± 0.35, 0.50 ± 0.29 to 5.33 ± 0.16, 0.25 ± 0.12 to 1.50 ± 0.03, 3.17 ± 0.17 to 31.8 ± 0.44, 14.08 ± 0.88 to 44.00 ± 0.29 mg/kg for Cd, Pb, Cr, Cu, and Zn, respectively. The levels of cadmium and lead in all of the studied food crops analyzed were higher than the acceptable limit. Heavy metals in the soil of the investigated crops ranged from 0.33 ± 0.00 to 1.17 ± 0.17, 0.83 ± 0.33 to 3.08 ± 0.05, 0.50 ± 0.02 to 1.1 ± 0.17,4.83 ± 0.20 to 31.50 ± 0.29, 5.00 ± 0.09 to 61.3 ± 0.29 mg/kg for Cd, Pb, Cr, Cu, and Zn, respectively. Heavy metal concentrations in the corresponding soil of all pesticide fumigated crops were significantly higher than in control soil. The Hazard quotient showed that children will experience potential non-cancer risks through the consumption of Allium cepa, Daucus carota, and Solanum lycopersicum for cadmium. The combined multiple effects of the studied metals (HI) indicated that children will experience severe non-cancer health risks through the intake of most of the studied crops. The target cancer risk (TCR) of Cr and Pb were within the range of 10 −6 −10 −5 indicating minimal-to-moderate risk of developing cancer based on the USEPA 2019 standard. Long-term intake of agricultural food crops contaminated with pesticide-derived heavy metals could constitute a national health risk. Heavy metals in pesticides should be screened and monitored regularly.

Abstract:Growing Brassica rapa L. (Brassica rapa subsp. campestris (Linn.) Clapham) with wastewater and their use as a fodder for animals is a common practice in suburb of all cities in Punjab, Pakistan, despite the wastewater containing heavy metals is of public health concern. This study assessed the risk of heavy metals on animal health via consumption of B. rapa as fodder grown with wastewater, tube-well and canal water, and its source apportionment, in suburb of Multan City, Pakistan. Samples of B. rapa (n = 30) were collected from six agricultural farms and analyzed for cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), and lead (Pb) by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Total target health quotient (TTHQ) values ranged 47.22 to 136.64 in wastewater irrigation farm, 2.32 to 3.71 in canal water, and 4.86 to 7.50 in tube-well water irrigation farms, respectively exhibiting high carcinogenic health risk to animals across the farms. B. rapa grown with industrial effluents exhibited the highest carcinogenic health risk, while the canal water posed the lowest risk. Multivariate statistical analyses indicated that the wastewater samples containing heavy metals and contaminated soils were common sources of B. rapa contamination. Proper treatment of wastewater for removal of toxic elements before application in agricultural fields may safeguard the health of animals, public, and the ecosystem.

Abstract:Irrigation with contaminated wastewater is a common practice in cultivation of crops and vegetables in many developing countries due to the scarcity of available fresh water. The present study has investigated the transfer and mobilization trends of heavy metals in different crops and vegetables plants grown in contaminated soil and waterbody. The translocation patterns of metals from polluted sources into different organs of plants bodies such as roots and edible parts and associated health risks have been evaluated simultaneously. Total of 180 different environmental samples including food plants, agricultural soil, and irrigation water were collected and analyzed. Heavy metal concentrations (Fe, Ni, Mn, Pb, Cu, Cd, As) in water, soil, and different parts of crops and vegetable plants were compared with the permissible levels reported by FAO/WHO, EU, and USEPA. Different metals contents within the food plants were found to be in the order of Fe > Mn > Ni > Cu > Pb > Cd > As. Pollution load index (PLI) data indicate that soil is highly polluted with Cd as well as moderately contaminated by As and Cu. Bioconcentration factor (BCF) analysis showed excessive accumulation of some heavy metals in crops and vegetables. Target hazard quotient (THQ) and target carcinogenic risk (TCR) analysis data showed higher carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks for both adult and children from the consumption of metal-contaminated food items. The results of metal pollution index (MPI), estimated daily intake (EDI), and hazard index (HI) analyses demonstrated the patterns of metals pollution in different food plants.

Abstract:Heavy metals are environmental pollutants and carcinogenic for human health if ingested. In developing countries, including Pakistan, untreated sewerage water is one of the major sources of irrigation for vegetable production in the vicinities of urban areas which might be toxic to human health due to heavy metals contamination. The present study was conducted to investigate the uptake of heavy metals by sewage water application and its impact on human health. The experiment consisted of five vegetable crops ( Raphanus sativus L, Daucus carota , Brassica rapa , Spinacia oleracea , and Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) and two irrigation sources (clean water irrigation and sewage water irrigation). Each treatment was three time replicated for all five vegetables, and standard agronomic practices were applied. The results demonstrated that shoot and root growth in radish, carrot, turnip, spinach, and fenugreek was enhanced significantly with sewerage water, probably due to enhanced organic matter. However, pithiness was observed in the root of radish under sewerage water treatment. Very high concentrations of Cd, up to 7.08 ppm in turnip roots while up to 5.10 ppm in fenugreek shoot, were observed, and other vegetables also contained higher concentrations of Cd. Zn concentrations in the edible parts of carrot (control (C) = 129.17 ppm, sewerage (S) = 164.10 ppm), radish (C = 173.73 ppm, S = 253.03), turnip (C = 109.77 ppm, S = 149.67 ppm), and fenugreek (C = 131.87 ppm, S = 186.36 ppm) were increased by sewerage water treatment but a decrease in Zn concentration in spinach (C = 262.17 ppm, S = 226.97 ppm) was observed. Fe concentration in edible parts of carrot (C = 888.00 ppm, S = 524.80 ppm), radish (C = 139.69 ppm, S = 123.60 ppm), turnip (C = 195.00 ppm, S = 121.37 ppm), and fenugreek (C = 1054.93 ppm, S = 461.77 ppm) were also decreased by sewerage water treatment while spinach leaves had accumulated higher Fe (C = 1560.33 ppm, S = 1682.67 ppm) in sewerage water treatment. The highest bioaccumulation factor value was 4.17 for Cd in carrots irrigated with sewerage water. The maximum value of bioconcentration factor was 3.11 for Cd in turnip under control, and the highest value of translocation factor was 4.82 in fenugreek irrigated with sewerage water. Daily intake of metals and health risk index (HRI) calculation indicated that HRI for Cd was more than 1, suggesting toxicity in these vegetables while HRI for Fe and Zn is still under safe limit. Correlation analysis among different traits of all vegetables under both treatments revealed valuable information for selecting traits in the next crop breeding programs. It is concluded that untreated sewerage-irrigated vegetables, highly contaminated with Cd, are potentially toxic for human consumption and should be banned in Pakistan. Furthermore, it is suggested that the sewerage water should be treated to eliminate toxic compounds, particularly Cd, before irrigation usage and non-edible/phytoremediation crops might be grown in contaminated soils.

Abstract:In many countries with wastewater irrigation and intensive use of fertilizers (minerals and organics), heavy metal deposition by crops is regarded as a major environmental concern. A study was conducted to determine the impact of mineral fertilizers, cow manure, poultry manure, leaf litter, and sugarcane bagasse on soil's trace Pb content and edible parts of vegetables. It also evaluated the risk of lead (Pb) contamination in water, soil, and food crops. Six vegetables ( Daucus carota, Brassica oleracea, Pisum sativum, Solanum tuberosum, Raphanus sativus, and Spinacia oleracea ) were grown in the field under twelve treatments with different nutrient and water inputs. The lead concentrations in soil, vegetables for all treatments and water samples ranged from 1.038–10.478, 0.09346–9.0639 mg/kg and 0.036–0.26448 mg/L, The concentration of lead in soil treated with wastewater in treatment (T6) and vegetable samples was significantly higher, exceeding the WHO's permitted limit. Mineral and organic fertilizers combined with wastewater treatment reduced lead (Pb) concentrations in vegetables compared to wastewater application without organic fertilizers. Health risk indexes for all treatments except wastewater treatment (T 6 ) were less than one. Pb concentrations in mineral fertilizers, cow manure, poultry manure, leaf litter, and sugarcane bagasse treated were determined to pose no possible risk to consumers.

Abstract:Cadmium, a high toxicity element, is a potential threat to plant and human health, and a dangerous pollutant in the environment. Uptake and accumulation by crops represent the main entry pathway for potentially health-threatening toxic metals into human and animal food. Crops and other plants take up Cd from the soil or water and may distribute it in their roots and shoots. Soil and/or water are usually contaminated with Cd through natural sources, industrial effluent, and anthropogenic activities. In this review, the sources of Cd contamination, evaluation of the phytotoxic effects on plants, and mode of action of Cd toxicity, were summarized. Plant defensive strategies upon excess Cd are also considered in this review. Cd-induced effects include oxidative stress, disintegration of the photosynthetic apparatus, reduction in gas exchange parameters, nutrient imbalance, and subcellular organelle degradation. In addition, Cd severely impairs biomolecules such as DNA, protein, and lipids. Although plants are sessile in nature, they are equipped with certain mechanisms to cope with unfavorable conditions. These mechanisms include synthesis of metal-chelating proteins, expression of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants, organic acids, and plant root-mycorrhiza association. The built-in system of plant tolerance to Cd can be further enhanced by the application of exogenous organic and inorganic metal sources. This review will broaden the knowledge about the Cd accumulation in plants and the responses to metal exposure, as well as our understanding of metal tolerance and overcoming this serious issue for sustainable agriculture and human health worldwide.
Heavy Metals and Microbes Accumulation in Soil and Food Crops Irrigated with Wastewater and the Potential Human Health Risk: A Metadata Analysis

Abstract:Wastewater is actively used for irrigation of vegetable and forage crops in arid lands due to water scarcity and cost advantages. The objective of this review was to assess the effect of wastewater (mixture sources) reuse in irrigation on soil, crop (vegetable and forage crops), animal products, and human health. The metadata analysis of 95 studies revealed that the mean of toxic heavy metals including nickel (Ni), chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) in untreated wastewater were higher than the world standard limits in wastewater-irrigated regions. Although heavy metals in treated wastewater were within the standard limits in those areas, the concentration of those toxic elements (Pb, Cd, Ni, Cr, and As) exceeded the allowable limits in both soil and vegetables’ edible parts. In fact, the concentration of heavy metals in vegetables’ edible parts increased by 3–9 fold when compared with those irrigated with fresh water. Escherichia coli in wastewater-irrigated soil was about 2 × 106 (CFU g−1) and about 15 (CFU g−1) in vegetables’ edible parts (leaf, bulb, tuber and fruit) while the mean total coliforms was about 1.4 × 106 and 55 (CFU g−1) in soil and vegetables’ edible parts, respectively. For human health risk assessment, the estimated daily intake (EDI) and human health risk index (HRI) ranged from 0.01 to 8 (EDI and HRI > 1.0 associated with adverse health effects). Although the mean of EDI for heavy metals from wastewater-irrigated vegetables were less than 1, the HRI for Cd and Pb were above the limits for safe consumption. Overall, heavy metal levels in wastewater that used for irrigation of agricultural crops could be within the recommended levels by the world standards, but the long-term use of this reused water will contaminate soil and crops with several toxic heavy metals leading to potential carcinogenic risks to humans. Therefore, rigorous and frequent testing (wastewater, soil, and plant) is required in cultivated farms to prevent the translocation of heavy metals in the food chain.

Abstract:Heavy metals contamination of soil and edible parts of vegetables is presently a challenging environmental issue worldwide. The present study determined the accumulated amount of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and manganese (Mn) in soil, coriander, onion, and tomato collected from agricultural fields of Jhansi city, India. The bio-concentration factor and non-carcinogenic health risks were also assessed to know the vegetables’ accumulation potential of heavy metals from soil and possibility to have non-carcinogenic health risks via an intake of these vegetables. The samples were digested using di-acid solution prior to heavy metals analysis by atomic absorption spectrometric method. The average content of Cd, Pb, Ni, Co, Zn, Cu, and Mn were 2.02, 19.09, 21.56, 9.31, 35.34, 14.96, and 15.21 mg/kg dry weight (dw) in soil, 0.23, 2.12, 0.77, 0.47, 36.65, 5.92, and 21.65 mg/kg dw in coriander, 0.13, 0.66, 0.54, 0.32, 23.94, 6.25, and 20.15 mg/kg dw in onion, 0.14, 0.46, 0.89, 0.22, 16.77, 4.77, and 14.46 mg/kg dw in tomato, respectively. The bio-concentration factor revealed significant accumulation of Zn (1.04) and Mn in coriander (1.42), and in onion (1.32). The target hazard quotient and health risk index signaled that the population consuming these vegetables is risk-free. However, it is recommended that the concentration of heavy metals in the soil and crops of the study area and its related health risks be regularly monitored to avoid significant health risks in the future.

Abstract:Contamination of metals in agricultural soil is a serious global threat but there are limited reports related to their risks in major agronomic areas. The current study is aimed to assess the distribution of selected macroelements and essential/toxic trace metals (Ca, Mg, Na, K, Sr, Li, Ag, Fe, Zn, Co, Cu, Mn, Cd, Cr, Pb and Ni) in the agricultural soil of Chakwal, Pakistan, in order to appraise their contamination status, source identification and probable human health risks. Quantification of the metals was performed by AAS employing aqua regia digestion method. Among the selected metals, dominant mean concentrations were observed for Ca (48,285 mg/kg) and Fe (30,120 mg/kg), followed by Mg (9171 mg/kg), K (973.3 mg/kg), Mn (399.0 mg/kg) and Na (368.9 mg/kg). The correlation study indicated strong mutual relationships among the metals as well as physicochemical properties. Multivariate analysis (PCA/CA) of the metal levels revealed their diverse anthropogenic sources in the soil. Various pollution indices indicated extremely high contamination/enrichment of Cd, followed by moderate enrichment/contamination of Ag in the soil. The HQ values for most of the metals manifested insignificant non-cancer risks. The average CR value of Cr was exceeding the safe limit (1.0E-06) for both ingestion and inhalation exposure, indicating a considerable lifelong cancer risk for the population. The results of this study will provide a better understanding related to the contamination of agricultural soil and its effects on human health and to promote effective actions to reduce the soil pollution.

Abstract:Abstract Due to urbanization and industrialization, there has been an increase in solid waste generation and has become a global concern and leakage of leachate from landfills contaminate the soil and groundwater and hence can have a severe impact on human health. The present study aimed to determine the composition of toxic metals (Cr, Mn, Cu, As) and heavy metals (Cd, Ba, Hg, Pb) in soil and water by an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES). To ensure accuracy during the analysis of Cr, Mn, Cu, As, Cd, Ba, Hg, and Pb in real samples, certified reference material (CRM, SRM 2709a) of San Joaquin soil and water (SRM 1640a) were analyzed and results were presented in terms of % recovery studies. The mean concentration of all the metals in soil and water did not exceed the limit set by the European Community (EU), WHO, and US EPA except Cu where the permissible limit defined by the EU is 50–140 mg/kg in soil. The soil is uncontaminated to moderately contaminated with respect to all metals except the Cu and Pb. Among the average daily dose (ADD) of soil, ADD ing and ADD inh for children had the maximum dose for all metals than adults while ADD derm was higher in adults. Hazard quotient (HQ) trend in both adults and children was found in order HQ ing > HQ derm > HQ inh of soil for all metals except Ba which followed HQ ing > HQ inh > HQ derm . Hazard index (HI) values of soil for Cr and Pb in children were 7 and 7.5 times higher than adults respectively. Lifetime cancer risk (LCR) value for Cr by different exposure pathways of soil was 5.361 × 10 −4 for children which are at the lower borderline of risk for cancer.

Abstract:Heavy metal contamination in soil and accumulation in cultivated vegetables is currently an urgent ecological problem prevalent throughout the world. The study investigated the concentrations of heavy metals (Cr, Ni, Zn, Cu, and Pb) in irrigation water, soil, and vegetables grown in the vicinity of the industrial area of northern India. Furthermore, this study also assessed the health risk to the local population from consuming vegetables grown in metal-contaminated areas. In the present study, concentrations of all heavy metals in the soil remained within the acceptable limits stipulated by national standards, with the exception of Ni, which exceeded the prescribed threshold limit (Ni=75–100, Cu=135–270, Zn=300–600, Pb=250–500 µgg−1). The concentration of heavy metals in the vegetables was found maximum at the Lohta site followed by Ramnagar, Varuna, Dinapur, and Shivpur as compared to the control site (BHU). The highest concentration of Zn, Cu, Cr, Ni, and Pb was found in Spinacia oleracea followed by Amaranthus grain, Mentha spicata, Abelmoschus esculentus, Solanum melongena, Lagenaria siceraria, Solanum lycopersicum, Momordica charantia, Luffa acutangula, and least in Phaseolus vulgaris. The higher metal content of these vegetables is further supported by an increase in the metal pollution index (MPI) of wastewater-irrigated soil. The maximum DIM (Daily intake of metals) was reported in S. oleracea (0.061 μg g−1/day), whereas the minimum for P. vulgaris (0.007 μg g−1/day). On the basis of health quotient (HQ) revealed that at the Lohta, Ramnagar, Varuna Dinapur sites, HQ values of Cr, Ni, Cu, and Pb were found greater than one (>1) for both children and adults on the consumption of all tested plants. The HQ value of all heavy metals except Zn indicated their contamination in the vegetables and their health risks to the local residents. As a result, continuous monitoring and source control should be conducted for heavy metals i.e., Cr, Ni, Zn, and Pb, to ensure the region's food quality and environmental security.

Abstract:The goals of the present research were to determine the heavy metal contents in the water-soil-cauliflower samples in industrial wastewater irrigated areas and to assess the health risks of these metals to the people. Metal analyses were carried out using the atomic absorption spectrophotometer equipped with a graphite furnace. The metal readings in the cauliflower specimens ranged from 1.153 to 1.389, 0.037 to 0.095, 0.61 to 0.892, 0.625 to 0.921, 1.165 to 2.399, 0.561 to 0.652, 0.565 to 0.585, 0.159 to 0.218 and 1.268 to 1.816 mg/kg for Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, Zn and Mn, respectively. Statistics revealed that, with the exception of Pb and Co ( p > 0.05), there was no statistically significant variation in the metal concentrations in the cauliflower samples according to the irrigation type. Pb, Ni, and Cr had HRI values below 1.0 and did not seem to be a hazard to human health, in contrast to Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, Zn and Mn, which glanced to constitute a health risk. Regular monitoring of vegetables irrigated with wastewater is strongly advised to reduce health hazards to people.

Abstract:Improperly treated wastewater irrigation leads to the accumulation of Potentially Toxic Metals (PTMs) in soil and crops, posing threats to ecosystems and human health. This study focused on assessing wastewater, soil, and Basmati rice grains (BRGs) from Hafizabad district, Pakistan, to understand the impact of improperly treated wastewater irrigation on soil quality, ecological systems, and human health. The analysis revealed varying levels of PTM pollution in wastewater sources across different sites, with significant accumulation observed in soil (Cr ≈ 285.33 mg/kg to 312.62 mg/kg, Pb ≈ 154.23 mg/kg to 175.22 mg/kg, Zn ≈ 119.66 mg/kg to 163.71 mg/kg, Cu ≈ 132.42 mg/kg to 160.86 mg/kg) and BRGs (Cr ≈ 0.87 mg/kg to 1.1 mg/kg, Pb ≈ 0.19 mg/kg to 0.22 mg/kg, Zn ≈ 37.7 mg/kg to 40.0 mg/kg, Cu ≈ 8.0 mg/kg to 11.8 mg/kg, Ni ≈ 0.45 mg/kg to 0.49 mg/kg, Co ≈ 0.79 mg/kg to 1.13 mg/kg) irrigated with this wastewater. Soil irrigated with this wastewater showed moderate to very high PTM contamination but a low potential ecological risk. Daily intake of PTMs through BRGs from these sites remained within safety limits set by regulatory authorities. Human Health Risk Index values for all PTMs were below the safe limit of 1, suggesting no immediate health hazards from consuming BRGs. However, prolonged wastewater irrigation could increase PTM levels in soil and BRGs over time, posing potential risks to consumers. The study highlighted the complex process of PTM translocation to BRGs, emphasizing the need for further research into these mechanisms.

Abstract:The current work was conducted to study the concentrations of heavy metals (HMs) in farming soil and wheat and compute their geological and health indexes, including geo-accumulation index (Igeo), chronic daily intake (CDI), hazard index (HI), hazard quotient (HQ), and cancer risk (CR). In general, 256 samples were collected from agriculture soil (AS) and wheat in Kalaleh and Aq Qala areas, northern Iran. The average rates of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn were detected to be 0.28, 25.24, 15.44, and 60.33 mg·kg-1, respectively, for AS and 0.01, 8.85, 0.73, and 33.81 mg·kg-1 for wheat, respectively. Based on the results, the HQ and HI levels for investigated HMs were lower than l. So, the health risk of HMs exposure for adults and children was low. CR levels for Pb in AS for both children and adults were observed greater than the threshold value. Accordingly, lead-contaminated soil will be carcinogenic if ingested by children. On the other hand, the exposure to Pb (through wheat) and Cd (through both soil and wheat) had the acceptable CR level for all groups. As a result, for an extended period, there are no significant health consequences for children and adults.

Abstract:Heavy metals, such as cadmium, copper, lead, chromium and mercury, are important environmental pollutants, particularly in areas with high anthropogenic pressure. Their presence in the atmosphere, soil and water, even in traces can cause serious problems to all organisms, and heavy metal bioaccumulation in the food chain especially can be highly dangerous to human health. Heavy metals enter the human body mainly through two routes namely: inhalation and ingestion, ingestion being the main route of exposure to these elements in human population. Heavy metals intake by human populations through food chain has been reported in many countries. Soil threshold for heavy metal toxicity is an important factor affecting soil environmental capacity of heavy metal and determines heavy metal cumulative loading limits. For soil-plant system, heavy metal toxicity threshold is the highest permissible content in the soil (total or bioavailable concentration) that does not pose any phytotoxic effects or heavy metals in the edible parts of the crops does not exceed food hygiene standards. Factors affecting the thresholds of dietary toxicity of heavy metal in soil-crop system include: soil type which includes soil pH, organic matter content, clay mineral and other soil chemical and biochemical properties; and crop species or cultivars regulated by genetic basis for heavy metal transport and accumulation in plants. In addition, the interactions of soil-plant root-microbes play important roles in regulating heavy metal movement from soil to the edible parts of crops. Agronomic practices such as fertilizer and water managements as well as crop rotation system can affect bioavailability and crop accumulation of heavy metals, thus influencing the thresholds for assessing dietary toxicity of heavy metals in the food chain. This paper reviews the phytotoxic effects and bioaccumulation of heavy metals in vegetables and food crops and assesses soil heavy metal thresholds for potential dietary toxicity.

Abstract:In this study, 103 water, agricultural soil, and crops irrigated with wastewater or tube-well water were collected, and their heavy metal content was evaluated using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The Monte Carlo simulation method was used for exposure assessment and investigation of the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic effects of the studied elements in the crops.. The results showed that the mean heavy metal contents of agricultural soil was lower than the suggested limit, except for Ni (84 ± 27 mg/kg dry weight). The mean concentrations of Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, Pb, Cr, As, Co, Ni, Cd, and Hg in the crops were 31 ± 35.7, 3.7 ± 3, 3.2 ± 2, 0.98 ± 0.7, 0.28 ± 0.4, 0.14 ± 0.1, 0.06 ± 0.06, 0.03 ± 0.04, 0.19 ± 0.15, 0.03 ± 0.06, and 0.01 ± 0.06 mg/kg fresh weight, respectively.. The non-carcinogenic risk of As was 1.5E + 00 in the agricultural soil and 1.47E + 00 in the crops (target hazard quotient >1.0). Moreover, the carcinogenic risk of As was 1.15E-04, which is higher than the safe level in children (1 × 10-6).. Also, the carcinogenic risk of Ni, Cd, and As in most vegetables was higher than the tolerable limit (1 × 10-6).. In conclusion, the present results provided some basic information about heavy metal contamination of crops and human health risks in Hamadan, Iran.
