Abstract:The May 12, 2008 Wenchuan earthquake of China (Mw 7.9 or Ms 8.0) triggered hundreds of thousands of landslides. Mapping such a large number of landslides is a major task, considering the large size of the affected area and the availability of pre- and post-earthquake remote sensing images. This paper compares three (nearly) complete landslide inventories that were compiled from visual image interpretation. The three inventories differ in the manner in which the landslides are represented, either as polygons, centroid points, or top points. Landslides in the three inventories use one-to-one correspondence. Each of the three inventories includes a large proportion of the 197,481 landslides triggered by the earthquake. These landslides were delineated as individual solid polygons and points using visual interpretation of high-resolution aerial photographs and satellite images acquired following the earthquake and verified by selected field checking throughout a broad area of approximately 110,000 km2. These landslides cover a total area of approximately 1,160 km2. Based on the inventories of landslide polygons and landslide centroid points, two types of density maps were constructed. Correlations of landslide occurrence with seismic, geologic, and topographic parameters were analyzed using the three landslide inventories. Statistical analysis of their spatial distribution was performed using both the landslide area percentage (LAP), defined as the percentage of the area affected by the landslides and the landslide number density (LND), defined as the number of landslides per square kilometer. There are two types of LNDs: the LND-centroid (based on the centroid point of the landslide) and the LND-top (based on the top point of the landslide). We used the three indexes to determine how the occurrence of the landslides correlates with elevation, slope angle, slope aspect, slope position, slope curvature, lithology, distance from the epicenter, seismic intensity, distance from the Yingxiu-Beichuan surface fault rupture, peak ground acceleration (PGA), and coseismic surface displacements (including horizontal, vertical, and total displacements). Both the LAP and the two types of LND values were observed to have continuous positive or negative correlations with the slope angle, slope curvature, distance from the epicenter and from the Yingxiu-Beichuan surface fault rupture, seismic intensity, and coseismic surface displacement. In addition, the highest values of the LAP and LND values appear at ranges from 1,200 to 3,000 m in elevation. Moreover, the landslides have preferred orientations, dominated by the eastern, southeastern, and southern directions. In addition, the sandstone, siltstone (Z), and granitic rocks experienced more concentrated landslides. No obvious correlations were observed between the LAP and LND values and slope position. Finally, we studied the orders of eight earthquake-triggered landslide impact factor effect on landslide occurrence.HighlightsThe 197,481 landslides triggered by the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake were delineated.Three landslide inventories were constructed: polygon, centroid, and top point inventories.The landslides were spatially analyzed with topographic, lithology, and seismic parameters.

Abstract:In recent years, a series of earthquakes have occurred in Sichuan province, southwest China. On April 20, 2013, 1013 landslides were triggered in the Lushan earthquake within the research area of 1215.87 km2. On August 8, 2017, 821 landslides were induced in the Jiuzhaigou earthquake within the study area of 541.61 km2. The slope, aspect, elevation, distance to the river, distance to fault, stratum lithology, curvature, and PGA as evaluation factors were chosen to research the distribution characteristics of coseismic landslides. The relationship between influence factors and distribution of coseismic landslides were analyzed using landslide area density (LAD), defined as the ratio between the coseismic landslides area and the total area under the specific classification of eight factors, and landslide number density (LND), interpreted as the number of landslides per square kilometer affected by an earthquake. Both the LAD and LND curves show the common correlations between distribution characteristics of coseismic landslides and the classification of eight factors. The high density of coseismic landslides was found at locations where the valley evolves from U-shaped to V-shaped, along slopes with an inclination between 20 and 50°. Due to the effect of river cutting erosion and human engineering activities, massive coseismic landslides appeared within the scope of 200 m from the river system. Eight hundred sixty small shallow coseismic landslides were found less than 3 km from the seismogenic fault in both earthquakes. Both concave and convex terrain has the same effect of promoting coseismic landslides. The strata of the Carboniferous and Cretaceous are more prone to coseismic landslides occurrence. In the event of another earthquake of similar magnitude in southwest China in the future, the research results can quickly predict the distribution of coseismic landslides and provide a scientific basis for emergency rescue.

Abstract:Abstract Background On September 5, 2022, an Ms 6.8 earthquake occurred in Luding County, Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan, China. The casualties and economic losses caused by the earthquake are huge. Most of the landslides triggered by this earthquake are small and medium-sized rock collapses and destructive debris flows, with a small number of large-scale landslides. Results There are 5007 coseismic landslides in the Luding earthquake VII-degree area and above, with a total area of 17.36 km 2 . The landslides are generally distributed along the NW-SE direction. The highest landslide area density is 13.8%, and the highest point density of the landslide is 35.73 km 2 . High-density area is mainly concentrated in the IX-degree area and the northeast side of the seismogenic fault. Coseismic landslides are more likely to develop in the area with the slope more than 40°, the slope direction of 67.5-112.5 degree, and vegetation coverage of 40–50%. More landslides are developed in granite areas and forest areas. The closer distance to active faults, the more the coseismic landslides develop. The correlation between coseismic landslide development and the distance from the active faults is better than that between coseismic landslide development and the distance from the seismogenic faults. Conclusion The landslide database used in this paper is the most perfect at present, and the research results have also been verified by fieldwork. This is also the first applied study of this landslide inventory, which indirectly confirmed the accuracy of the inventory. The results obtained in the manuscript will provide an important guideline for future disaster prevention and mitigation in southwest China.

Earthquake-triggered Landslides Affecting a UNESCO Natural Site: the 2017 Jiuzhaigou Earthquake in the World National Park, China

Abstract:On August 8th, 2017, an Ms 7.0 magnitude earthquake occurred in Jiuzhaigou County, northern Sichuan Province, China. The Jiuzhaigou Valley World National Park was the most affected area due to the epicentre being located in the scenic area of the park. Understanding the distribution characteristics of landslides triggered by earthquakes to help protect the natural heritage sites in Jiuzhaigou Valley remains a scientific challenge. In this study, a relatively complete inventory of the coseismic landslides triggered by the earthquake was compiled through the interpretation of high-resolution images combined with a field investigation. The results indicate that coseismic landslides not only are concentrated in Rize Gulley, Danzu Gully and Zezhawa Gully in the study area but also occur in the front part of Shuzheng Gully along the road network (from the entrance of Jiuzhaigou Valley to Heye Village). The landslides predominantly occur on the east- and southeast-facing slopes in the study area, which is a result of the integrated action of the valley direction and fault movement direction. The back-slope effect and the slope structure caused the difference in coseismic landslide distribution within the three gullies (Danzu Gully, Rize Gully, and Zezhawa Gully) near the inferred fault. In addition, the topographic position index was used to analyse the impact of microlandforms on earthquake-triggered landslides by considering the effect of the slope angle. The study results reveal a higher concentration of landslides in the slope position class of the middle slope (30°-50°) in Jiuzhaigou Valley. These findings can provide scientific guidance for the protection of natural heritage sites and post-disaster reconstruction in Jiuzhaigou Valley.

Abstract:A Mw=6.5 earthquake struck the Jiuzhaigou region of Sichuan Province, China, at 21:19 LT on Tuesday, 8 August 2017, and triggered a large number of landslides. For mitigating the damages of earthquake-triggered landslides to individuals and infrastructures of the earthquake-affected region, a comprehensive landslide susceptibility mapping was attempted with an integrated weighted index model by combining the frequency ratio and the analytical hierarchy process approaches under a GIS-based environment in the heavily earthquake-affected Zhangzha town of the Jiuzhaigou region. For this purpose, a total number of 842 earthquake-triggered landslides were visually interpreted and located from Sentinel-2A images acquired before and after the earthquake at first, and then the recognized landslides were randomly split into two groups to establish the earthquake-triggered landslide inventory, among which 80 % of the landslides were used for training the integrated model and the remaining 20 % for validation. Nine landslide controlling factors were considered including slope, aspect, elevation, lithology, distance from faults, distance from rivers, land use–land cover, normalized difference vegetation index and peak ground acceleration. The frequency ratio was utilized to evaluate the contribution of each landslide controlling factor to landslide occurrence, and the analytical hierarchy process was used to analyse the mutual relationship between landslide controlling factors. Finally, the landslide susceptibility map was produced by using weighted overlay analysis. Furthermore, an area under the curve approach was adopted to comprehensively evaluate the performance of the integrated weighted index model, including the degree of model fit and model predictive capability. The results demonstrated the reliability and feasibility of the integrated weighted index model in earthquake-triggered landslide susceptibility mapping at a regional scale. The generated map can help engineers and decision makers assess and mitigate hazards of the earthquake-triggered landslides to individuals and infrastructures of the earthquake-affected region.
Spatial Distribution of Large-Scale Landslides Induced by the 5.12 Wenchuan Earthquake

Abstract:The 5.12 Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008 induced hundreds of large-scale landslides. This paper systematically analyzes 112 large-scale landslides (surface area > 50000 m2), which were identified by interpretation of remote sensing imagery and field investigations. The analysis suggests that the distribution of large-scale landslides is affected by the following four factors: (a) distance effect: 80% of studied large-scale landslides are located within a distance of 5 km from the seismic faults. The farther the distance to the faults, the lower the number of large-scale landslides; (b) locked segment effect: the large-scale landslides are mainly located in five concentration zones closely related with the crossing, staggering and transfer sections between one seismic fault section and the next one, as well as the end of the NE fault section. The zone with the highest concentration was the Hongbai-Chaping segment, where a great number of large-scale landslides including the two largest landslides were located. The second highest concentration of large-scale landslides was observed in the Nanba-Donghekou segment at the end of NE fault, where the Donghekou landslide and the Woqian landslide occurred; (c) Hanging wall effect: about 70% of the large-scale landslides occurred on the hanging wall of the seismic faults; and (d) direction effect: in valleys perpendicular to the seismic faults, the density of large-scale landslides on the slopes facing the seismic wave is obviously higher than that on the slopes dipping in the same direction as the direction of propagation of the seismic wave. Meanwhile, it is found that the sliding and moving directions of large-scale landslides are related to the staggering direction of the faults in each section. In Qingchuan County where the main fault activity was horizontal twisting and staggering, a considerable number of landslides showed the feature of sliding and moving in NE direction which coincides with the staggering direction of the seismic faults.

Abstract:The 1970 Tonghai earthquake, which occurred on January 5, 1970, in Tonghai County, Yunnan Province, China, triggered a large number of landslides. Since the occurrence of the earthquake, there have been a huge number of research reports on the seismogenic structure and earthquake mechanism, but rare reports on the seismic landslides. As the largest earthquake recorded in the Qujiang fault zone, the study on the coseismic landslides triggered by this earthquake are of great significance to the prevention and mitigation of earthquake-induced landslides in this region. In this study, we established a coseismic landslide inventory for the VIII–X seismic intensity areas of the Ms 7.7 Tonghai earthquake, and conducted spatial analysis on the coseismic landslides, mainly having analyzed the effect of the topographic factors, geological factors, and seismic factors on the development of the coseismic landslides. To enhance the understanding of this earthquake, we converted the earthquake epicenter and magnitude with empirical formulas based on the distributions and areas of the coseismic landslides. Comparing with coseismic landslides in other earthquake-hit areas, we found the capability that this earthquake could induce landslides is low. This study provides a useful supplement to the global coseismic landslide inventories and could be the basic data for seismic landslide assessment in this earthquake-prone region.

Abstract:On September 5, 2022, a magnitude Ms 6.8 earthquake occurred along the Moxi fault in the southern part of the Xianshuihe fault zone located in the southeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau, resulting in severe damage and substantial economic loss. In this study, we established a coseismic landslide database triggered by Luding Ms 6.8 earthquake, which includes 4794 landslides with a total area of 46.79 km 2 . The coseismic landslides primarily consisted of medium and small-sized landslides, characterized by shallow surface sliding. Some exhibited characteristics of high-position initiation resulted in the obstruction or partial obstruction of rivers, leading to the formation of dammed lakes. Our research found that the coseismic landslides were predominantly observed on slopes ranging from 30° to 50°, occurring at between 1000 m and 2500 m, with slope aspects varying from 90° to 180°. Landslides were also highly developed in granitic bodies that had experienced structural fracturing and strong-to-moderate weathering. Coseismic landslides concentrated within a 6 km range on both sides of the Xianshuihe and Daduhe fault zones. The area and number of coseismic landslides exhibited a negative correlation with the distance to fault lines, road networks, and river systems, as they were influenced by fault activity, road excavation, and river erosion. The coseismic landslides were mainly distributed in the southeastern region of the epicenter, exhibiting relatively concentrated patterns within the IX-degree zones such as Moxi Town, Wandong River basin, Detuo Town to Wanggangping Township. Our research findings provide important data on the coseismic landslides triggered by the Luding Ms 6.8 earthquake and reveal the spatial distribution patterns of these landslides. These findings can serve as important references for risk mitigation, reconstruction planning, and regional earthquake disaster research in the earthquake-affected area.

Spatial distribution and tectonic significance of the landslides triggered by the 2021 Ms6.4 Yangbi earthquake, Yunnan, China

Abstract:An Ms6.4 earthquake occurred on 21 May 2021 in Yangbi County, Yunnan Province, located in the strong earthquake hazard zone, the border of the Sichuan-Yunnan rhomb block, southeast Tibetan Plateau, causing severe loss of life and property. Adequate research on the distribution characteristics and seismotectonic mechanisms of seismic chain-generated hazards in the region is meaningful for mitigating seismic hazard risks. In this paper, based on the interpretation of remote sensing satellite images and the analysis on GeoScene platform, we compile a detailed inventory of landslides induced by the Yangbi earthquake and analyze the correlation of their spatial distribution with the influence factors. The results show that 95 landslides were interpreted, and their spatial distribution is correlated to the topographic, seismic and geological factors. Statistically, the landslide number and mobility increase with the slope angle; the south- and southeast-facing slopes and weaker metamorphic rocks are more prone to landslides; the higher the seismic intensity, the larger the density and scale of landslides. Furthermore, the development of the landslides is not only influenced by the Ms6.4 mainshock, but also by the Ms5.6 foreshock, which is significantly correlated with the size of landslides. Notably, the long axis of the landslide distribution area is in NW-SE direction, which is nearly parallel to the strike of the Weixi-Qiaohou-Weishan fault zone (WQWF). The landslides are mainly distributed in the southwest wall and southeast section of the fault. The landslide number and density unstably decrease with the vertical distance from the fault with many fluctuations. Combined with the previous studies, two possible seismogenic structure models are inferred. One model is a parallel secondary fault of the WQWF, Another one is a flower structure in the southwest wall of the WQWF. Both models are mainly characterized by right-lateral strike slip with a small normal-fault component. Additionally, the seismic rupture propagated mainly to the southeast along the seismogenic fault in the subsurface without surface rupture.

Abstract:On September 6, 2018, an Mw 6.6 earthquake occurred in Hokkaido, Japan, triggering massive landslides. Based on the 0.3 m-resolution Pleiades-1 satellite image on the Google Earth platform, we constructed an updated co-seismic landslide inventory for this event, which permitted to map 12,586 landslides. These slope failures are featured by a large number, wide spread, large scales, and local dense distribution. Considering nine influence factors, i.e. elevation, slope angle, slope aspect, curvature, distance to road, distance to river, distance to the epicenter, lithology, and topography, the logistic regression model was applied to carry out a retrospective hazard assessment of earthquake-triggered landslides in the affected area, and the rationality of such prediction was verified by the real landslides mapped. Results show that the landslide hazard evaluation map is in good agreement with the actual landslide distribution. The success rate of the hazard assessment map is 87.0% compared to training samples, and 86.5% compared to testing samples, respectively. The updated landslide inventory is a useful complement to the existing landslide inventory maps and the landslide hazard assessment map is helpful for landslide disaster prevention and reduction and reconstruction planning in the affected area.
Spatial distribution of landslides triggered by the 2008 Ms 8.0 Wenchuan earthquake, China

Abstract:The Ms 8.0 Wenchuan earthquake of May 12, 2008 is one of the most disastrous earthquakes in China. The earthquake triggered tens of thousands of landslides over a broad area, including shallow, disrupted landslides, rock falls, deep-seated landslides, and rock avalanches, some of which buried large sections of some towns and dammed the rivers. The purpose of this study is to investigate correlations between the occurrence of landslides with geologic and geomorphologic conditions, and seismic parameters. Over 56,000 earthquake-triggered landslides, with a total area of 811km2, are interpreted using aerial photographs and remote sensing images taken following the earthquake. The spatial distribution of these landslides is analyzed statistically using both landslide-point density (LPD), defined as the number of landslides per square kilometer, and landslide-area density (LAD), the percentage of the area affected by landslides, to determine how the occurrence of landslides correlates with distance from the epicenter, distance from the major surface rupture, seismic intensity and peak ground acceleration (PGA), slope angle, slope aspect, elevation, and lithology. It is found that both LAD and LPD have strong positive correlations with slope steepness, distance from the major surface rupture and seismic intensity, and that Pre-Sinian schist, and Cambrian sandstone and siltstone intercalated with slate have the most concentrated landslide activities, followed by the Permian limestone intercalated with shale, and Devonian limestone. Statistical analyses also indicate that the major surface rupture has influence on the spatial distribution of landslides, because LAD and LPD are relatively higher on the hanging wall than on the footwall. However, the correlation between the occurrence of landslides with distance from the epicenter of the earthquake is complicated, rather than a relatively simple negative correlation as found from other reported cases of earthquakes. This is possibly due to complicated rupture processes of the earthquake.

Abstract:Seismic landslide hazard assessment plays a very important guiding role during urgent earthquake relief. In August 2017, an Ms 7.0 earthquake in Jiuzhaigou County, Sichuan Province, China, triggered thousands of landslides. Based on the analysis of geological settings and coseismic landslide characteristics, the Newmark model is used to complete the seismic landslide hazard assessment. A publicly published coseismic landslide catalog is used as the validation samples. The results show that the coseismic landslides are mainly distributed in the deep gullies and steep mountainous slopes on the north and south sides of the epicenter. The seismic landslide hazard accuracy based on Arias_C is the best, followed by that based on PGA and Arias_P. The spatial distribution of seismic landslide hazards based on Arias_C shows an almost standard elliptical ring and is in good agreement with that of coseismic landslides. These results fully reflect the combined influence of the epicenter and seismogenic fault on landslide development. The middle seismic landslide hazard and over are mainly located at areas with seismic intensity of VII degree and above. The Arias intensity is very suitable for rapid seismic landslide hazard assessment in emergency situations. The study results can provide scientific and technological support for rapid earthquake relief and have reference significance for future seismic landslide hazard assessment.

Investigation of 20 August 2019 Catastrophic Debris Flows Triggered by Extreme Rainstorms Near Epicentre of Wenchuan Earthquake

Abstract:A strong earthquake could trigger a large number of co-seismic landslides and induce large amount of loose materials on steep slopes and in the gullies. Under strong rainfall conditions, these loose materials could induce devastating debris flows, which will endanger the resettled population and destroy the re-built infrastructures. From 19 to 20 August 2019, fourteen debris flows were triggered by extreme rainstorms near the epicentre of the Wenchuan Earthquake. Among the fourteen incidents, three of them produced debris flow dams, which changed the course of the Minjiang River and resulted in flooding at different parts of the reconstructed Miansi town. In addition, sixteen casualties, twenty two missing persons, and destruction of four main roads were reported. In this paper, one typical catchment, named as “Dengxi gully”, near the epicentre of the Wenchuan earthquake (Sichuan Province, China) was chosen as a case study for remote sensing analysis, field investigation of landslide evolution and debris flow development before and after the catastrophic events. The debris flow in the study area was initiated in four stages: (a) generation of a large amount of loose materials from the Wenchuan Earthquake; (b) run-off erosion from co-seismic landslide material on hilly slopes and repeated mobilizations in steep channels over the years; (c) development of high intensity localised rainfall events; (d) wash out of accumulated materials in gully by the flood. The study of “8.20 debris flows” can provide a benchmark for analysis of long-term evolution of debris flows in order to identify potential continuing hazards in the earthquake-affected areas and make proper engineering decisions.
Detailed Inventory and Spatial Distribution Analysis of Rainfall-Induced Landslides in Jiexi County, Guangdong Province, China in August 2018

Abstract:In recent years, with the intensification of climate change, the occurrence of heavy rain events has become more frequent. Landslides triggered by heavy rainfall have become one of the common geological disasters around the world. This study selects an extreme rainfall event in August 2018 in Jiexi County, Guangdong province, as the research object. Based on high-resolution remote sensing images before and after the event, visual interpretation is conducted to obtain a detailed distribution map of rainfall-induced landslides. The results show that a total of 1844 rainfall-induced landslides were triggered within Jiexi County during this rainfall event. In terms of triggered scale, the total area of the landslides is 3.3884 million m2, with the largest individual landslide covering an area of 22,300 m2 and the smallest one covering an area of 417.78 m2. The landslides are concentrated in the northeastern, central, and southwestern parts of the study area, consistent with the distribution trend of rainfall intensity. To investigate further the influence of the regional environment on landslide distribution, this study selects eight influencing factors, including elevation, slope aspect, slope angle, topographic wetness index (TWI), topographic relief, lithology, distance to river, and accumulated rainfall. The landslide number density (LND) and landslide area percentage (LAP) are used as evaluation indicators. Based on statistical analysis using a data analysis platform, the relationship between landslide distribution and influencing factors triggered by this event is revealed. The results of this study will contribute to understanding the development law of regional rainfall-induced landslides and provide assistance for disaster prevention and mitigation in the area. The research results show that the elevation range of 100–150 m is the high-risk zone for landslides. In addition, this study has verified previous findings that slopes in the southeast direction are more prone to landslides. The steeper the slope, the more significant its influence on landslide development. When the topographic wetness index (TWI) is less than 4, landslides tend to have a high-density distribution. Greater variation in terrain relief is more likely to trigger landslides. The instability of lithology in Mesozoic strata is the main cause of landslides. The farther away from the water system, the fewer landslides occur. An increase in cumulative rainfall leads to an increase in both the number and area of landslides.

Travel Distances of Earthquake-induced Landslides

Abstract:Over 30,000 landslides occurred during the Wenchuan earthquake on 12 May 2008 in China. The casualty caused by these earthquake-induced landslides was approximately one quarter of the total casualty of this earthquake. The travel distance is a key parameter that measures the vulnerability to landslides. An appropriate model is required to evaluate the possible travel distances of earthquake-induced landslides so that planners can better select safe sites in earthquake-prone areas in the future. This paper describes a study on the travel distances of earthquake-induced landslides. We focus on 160 landslide cases in which relevant geometric data is available. Considering the substantial variations of the lithology and topographic conditions, multi-variable regression models are established for rock slides and soil slides separately. A comparison between the travel distances of rain-induced landslides and the landslides triggered by the Wenchuan earthquake is also conducted.

Abstract:At 17:00 (UTC+8) on 1 June 2022, an Ms 6.1 reverse earthquake struck Lushan County, Ya’an City, Sichuan Province. This earthquake event had a focal depth of 10 km and the epicenter was located at 30.37° N and 102.94° E. The purpose of this study is to document a comprehensive coseismic landslide inventory for this event and analyze the distribution pattern and factors controlling the landslides. After careful visual interpretations, this quake event was determined to have in total triggered about 2352 landslides in an area of 3900 km2, including both shallow disrupted landslides and collapses, for which the spatial distribution was statistically related to regional topography, geology, and seismicity. Notably, a vast majority of the landslides were located on the NW plate of the seismogenic fault, and were distributed in the area with a seismic intensity of VII. In addition, coseismic landslides were more likely to appear in areas with high altitude, relief, and large slope. The landslide area density (LAD) increased with an increase in the above factors and is explained by an exponential relationship, indicating that the occurrence of coseismic landslides in this area was more easily affected by topographic factors than seismic factors. Most small-scale landslides were clustered in the ridge area, which shows the seismic amplification effects of mountain slopes. Due to the impact of seismic wave propagation direction, hillslopes facing northeast-east (NE-E) were more prone to collapse than southwest-facing ones. Based on the distribution pattern of the landslides, we suggest that the seismogenic fault of this event was NW dipping. These findings indicate that it is effective to identify the dipping of seismogenic faults using the spatial distribution pattern of coseismic landslides.

Abstract:On May 18, 2020, an Mw5.1 earthquake occurred in Qiaojia County, Yunnan Province, China. This moderate-sized event triggered massive coseismic landslides, resulting in some damage. In this work, through visual interpretation of high-resolution (0.8–2 m) Gaofen satellite images before and after the earthquake, 167 landslides were delineated, 18 of which were inspected in the field. Using the landslide number density (LND) and landslide area percentage (LAP), we characterized the spatial distribution of these landslides, and analyzed their possible influence factors and tectonic significance. The results show that these landslides are distributed mostly in the NW-SE direction, roughly parallel to the long axis of seismic intensity zones and the strike of the Xiaohe-Baogunao fault (XBF). The LND and LAP decrease with increasing distances to the fault and from the epicenter to fault ends of the XBF. These permit to suggest that the seismogenic fault of the Qiaojia earthquake is likely a hidden branch of the XBF. All of the landslides induced by this event occurred in the region with the seismic intensity of six degrees or greater of the 2014 Mw6.2 Ludian earthquake. Therefore, it was inferred that the 2020 Qiaojia earthquake was probably the subsequent release of accumulated elastic strain after the 2014 Ludian earthquake in a same tectonic stress regime.

Incidence Number and Affected Area of Wenchuan Earthquake- induced Landslides

Abstract:On May 12, 2008 at 14:28 (local time), a catastrophic earthquake with the surface wave magnitude of Ms 8.0 struck the Sichuan Province of China. With the help of aerial photographs, multi-source remote sensing imageries and field investigations, slope failures and catastrophic landslides induced by the ground motion were extensively mapped. The results show that the Wenchuan earthquake has triggered 48 007 landslides, covering a total plane area of about 711.8 km2 over a broad area of about 48 678 km2. The total number and plane area of the landslides were much beyond other estimates in the published papers. There are several typical types in Wenchuan earthquake-induced landslides, such as soil landslide, rock fall, rock avalanche and debris flow,which are always distributed along the earthquake-triggering faults and with many barrier lakes being formed. It is estimated that the total number of landslides may well be over 50 000, to cover a total plane area of about 750 km2 as triggered by Wenchuan earthquake because of non-accessibility of remote sensing imagery and field investigation in some regions and the limit of the study area. In this paper, statistics for the number and plane area of Wenchuan earthquake-induced landslides were collected objectively and comprehensively, so the results may serve as a good reference for further study of spatial distribution, mechanism, evaluation, and prediction of seismic landslide, or even for identification of seismic characteristics.

Abstract:On September 5, 2022, an Ms6.8 earthquake struck Luding County, Sichuan Province, China. Through creating a coseismic landslide prediction model, we obtained the spatial distribution of the triggered geological hazards immediately after the earthquake. Through collecting all available multi-source optical remote sensing images of the earthquake-affected area via UAV and satellite platforms, the exact information of coseismic landslide was achieved by pattern recognition and visual inspection. According to the current results, the Luding earthquake triggered 5336 landslides with a total area of 28.53km 2 . The spatial distribution of the coseismic landslides is correlated statistically to various seismic, terrain, and geological factors, to evaluate their susceptibility at regional scale and to identify the most typical characteristics of these failures. The results reveal that the coseismic landslides mainly occurred on the sides of the Xianshuihe fault (within 1.2 km) and Dadu River (within 0.5 km) in striped patterns. They are concentrated in the regions with an elevation range of 1000–1800 m, a slope range of 25–55°, and lithologies of acid plutonic rocks, mixed sedimentary rocks, and siliciclastic sedimentary rocks. Besides, the coseismic landslides of the Luding earthquake are smaller in size and shallower than those triggered by the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake and the 2017 Jiuzhaigou earthquake. Rapidly achieving the spatial locations and distribution patterns of the coseismic landslides enables to provide effective support and guidance to emergency rescue, risk mitigation, and reconstruction planning.
