Abstract:Objective: Evaluating friction in human skin is important to assess its condition and the effects of skincare cosmetics. In this study, we evaluated the friction dynamics of moisturized skin to show the effects of moisturization on its mechanical properties. Methods: Friction force was evaluated using a sinusoidal motion friction evaluation system. The skin of the upper arm of 20 subjects was rubbed using a contact probe. The water content of the stratum corneum and the softness of the skin were measured using a Corneometer and a Cutometer, respectively. Results: When human skin was treated with water or 10 wt% glycerol aqueous solution, the friction coefficients increased by 0.23 ± 0.01 and 0.17 ± 0.14, respectively, and the delay times (normalized by calculating the time interval from contact with the probe to the friction response divided by the friction time for one round trip) increased by 0.048 ± 0.034 and 0.055 ± 0.024, respectively. Three different friction profiles were observed: (a) a stable pattern, in which a smooth profile was observed during the sliding process; (b) an oscillation pattern, in which significant oscillation was obtained; and (c) a stick pattern, in which the friction coefficient increased even during the deceleration process. In the case of untreated skin, the oscillation pattern was observed for the majority of subjects. The appearance rate of the stick pattern increased by 80.3% ± 29.4% after treatment with 10 wt% glycerol aqueous solution. These characteristic friction profiles can be explained by a two-step friction model consisting of two modes: (a) friction at the skin surface and (b) the delayed response due to skin deformation. Conclusion: Moisturizing the skin with water or 10 wt% glycerol aqueous solution increased the friction coefficient and delay time, dramatically changing the friction profile. These changes were considered to be due to the swelling and softening of the stratum corneum and the increased true contact area between the contact probe and the skin surface.
Friction Dynamics of Human Skin Treated using Polymer Aqueous Solutions

Abstract:Herein, we evaluated friction dynamics of human skin treated with polyacrylic acid aqueous solutions or gel creams using a sinusoidal motion friction evaluation system to demonstrate the effect of treatment with polymer aqueous solutions on human skin. A polymer aqueous solution or gel cream was applied to the inner forearms of 10 subjects to evaluate temporal changes in friction force under sinusoidal motion. Water content, skin viscoelasticity, and transepidermal water loss were also simultaneously measured to determine the effects on skin conditions. When human skin was treated with the polymer aqueous solution, the friction coefficient immediately after treatment was 0.69-0.99 and the delay time δ, a normalized parameter of the time difference in the delayed response of friction to the movement of the contact probe divided by the friction time T 0 for one round trip, was 0.171-0.179, which was greater than that of untreated skin. This increase was caused by the swelling and softening of the stratum corneum caused by the penetration of water in the polymer aqueous solution, which increased true contact area between the skin and contact probe. A significant difference was observed in the friction coefficient of the skin immediately after treatment with different polymer aqueous solutions. Among polymers (P1-P4), P4, which has a low-salt resistance and low yield stress, had the lowest friction coefficient because of collapsing of the polymer network structures by shearing and reduced viscosity owing to salts on human skin. The skin treated with a gel cream also exhibited a greater friction coefficient than the untreated skin immediately after treatment and 90 min later. This phenomenon can be caused by the occlusive effect of the oil in the gel cream.
Effect of Material Hardness on Friction Between a Bare Finger and Dry and Lubricated Artificial Skin

Abstract:Understanding the tribological phenomena when fingers slide over soft surfaces such as skin is important for many practical applications. Therefore, this article analyzed the coefficients of friction for a bare finger sliding over artificial skin with different hardness under dry and lubricated surface conditions. This article contrasts with previous research that predominantly analyzed the contact between skin and hard surfaces or probes. Under dry conditions, the coefficient of friction was constant for artificial skins that were harder than the finger pad, irrespective of the normal force of the finger. However, the coefficient of friction decreased with increasing normal force for softer artificial skins. When the surface of the artificial skin model was lubricated with mica, the coefficient of friction exhibited normal-force dependence only for soft artificial skins, similar to the observations under dry conditions. This effect was due to the deformation friction; thus, the coefficient of friction increased as the normal force increased. Conversely, when the model was lubricated with TiO2, the coefficient of friction depended on the normal force for all hardness levels. These findings provide insights into the friction experienced during skin-skin or skin-soft material contact under dry and lubricated conditions that can easily occur in daily life. Thus, the results of this study can be useful for the development of skin care products or assistive robots involving human-robot contact.

Abstract:Human beings often explore and perceive the characteristics of objects by touching with their fingers. During this process, the contact pressure and shear stress acting on the skin also modulate the tactile sensation. The external environment is an important factor that influences tactile perception as well as the finger friction characteristics. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of fluid environments, such as air, deionized water (DW) and thickened water (TW), on perceived roughness and relevant friction behaviour during finger movement. Two studies were performed to analyse the effect of fluid environment as well as the influence of lubricant viscosity on finger tactile friction behaviour. Participants conducted perception and sliding friction tests with their index finger in air and submerged in DW and TW, respectively. Perception tests were performed using a pairwise comparison, scoring the perceived roughness difference between a reference sample and the test sample. The statistical analysis showed that there was no significant difference in the roughness perception between air and DW, while the sensitivity of perception reduced with increasing lubricant viscosity. An approximate calculation of the film thickness was combined with classical lubrication theory to investigate the relationship between perception and friction. In TW, the thick film formed between the finger and the polytetrafluoroethylene plate changed the contact of the asperities with the skin, thus changing the subjective judgement and friction.

Abstract:Humans rely on their fingers to sense and interact with external environment. Understanding the tribological behavior between finger skin and object surface is crucial for various fields, including tactile perception, product appearance design, and electronic skin research. Quantitatively describing finger frictional behavior is always challenging, given the complex structure of the finger. In this study, the texture and sliding direction dependence of finger skin friction was quantified based on explicit mathematic models. The proposed double-layer model of finger skin effectively described the nonlinear elastic response of skin and predicted the scaling-law of effective elastic modulus with contact radius. Additionally, the skin friction model on textured surface considering adhesion and deformation factors was established. It revealed that adhesive term dominated finger friction behavior in daily life, and suggested that object texture size mainly influenced friction-induced vibrations rather than the average friction force. Combined with digital image correlation (DIC) technique, the effect of sliding direction on finger friction was analyzed. It was found that the anisotropy in finger friction was governed by the finger’s ratchet pawl structure, which also contributes to enhanced stick-slip vibrations in the distal sliding direction. The proposed friction models can offer valuable insights into the underlying mechanism of skin friction under various operating conditions, and can provide quantitative guidance for effectively encoding friction into haptics.

Abstract:This study investigates the friction and deformation behavior of the skin in contact with a rigid massage ball and its influencing factors. Pressing and stretching experiments were conducted using a collaborative robot experimental platform. The experiments encompassed a loading normal force range of 2 N to 18 N and a sliding speed range of 10 mm/s to 20 mm/s. The friction response curve exhibits two different stages: static stick state and dynamic stick-slip stage, both of which have been mathematically modeled. By analyzing the experimental data, we analyzed the effects of elastic modulus, sliding speed and normal loading force on skin tangential friction and tensile deformation. The results indicate that as the normal load increases, both friction and deformation exhibit an increase. Conversely, they decrease with an increase in elastic modulus. Notably, while deformation diminishes with higher sliding speed, friction force remains relatively unaffected by velocity. This observation can be attributed to the strain rate sensitivity resulting from the viscoelastic characteristics of the skin under substantial deformation. This study advances the understanding of friction and deformation behavior during skin friction, offering valuable insights to enhance the operational comfort of massage robots.

Abstract:Results from a skin-friction-field measurement method using global luminescent oil-film images, in which the oil film covers a large portion of the surface, were examined by comparing them with those obtained from conventional hot-wire measurements. The measurement processes including calibrations, oil-film image acquisition, and image processing are explained, and error sources are analyzed. The experimental results show that the skin frictions measured by both methods in a turbulent boundary layer on a flat surface agree when the oil-film thickness is less than the height of the viscous sublayer (corresponding to an oil-film thickness of less than five wall units). The uncertainty of the measurements is presented. When the measurement conditions were optimum (illumination, exposure time, frame rate, oil height, etc), the uncertainty was approximately 3%4%.

Abstract:Frictional properties are one of the most important physical factors in the design of cosmetic dispersions in which solid particles are dispersed in a liquid. The effects of ingredients and formulations on frictional properties have been previously reported. In this study, the frictional properties of 33 cosmetic dispersions were evaluated using a sinusoidal motion friction evaluation system when applied on an artificial skin. A detailed analysis of the velocity dependence of the friction coefficient demonstrated that all cosmetic dispersions exhibited stable pattern and the friction behavior did not change during the round trip. We analyzed friction-based parameters by principal component analysis and demonstrated that the principal components Z 1 and Z 2 include the static friction coefficient μ s, kinetic friction coefficient μ k, delay time δ, and viscosity coefficient C, and that these factors are involved in characterizing friction dynamics. The cluster analysis on Z 1 and Z 2 suggested that these dispersions can be classified in three groups with respect to friction dynamics. These results can help understand the characteristics of cosmetics and control their function and utility.

Abstract:A new test rig with an ability to obtain clear interference images at high pressure contacts has been developed. The technique of relative optical interference intensity has been used to obtain film thickness profiles and then lubrication properties of some base oils including six kinds of polyalphaolefin and four kinds of silicone oil have been studied at different pressures ranging from 1 to 3 GPa. The results show that viscosities of these lubricants have notable effect on slopes of film thickness curves (speed versus film thickness in log–log form), and the observed phenomenon is attributed to fluidity and molecular structure. A comparison of experimental central film thicknesses with computational work shows that at high loads the relationship between load and film thickness usually go against prediction given by Hamrock and Dowson. In addition, when more pressure is applied, the profiles of film thickness become more and more flat while rolling speed do little to change the shape of profiles.

Abstract:Background: The lipid components and natural moisturizing factors (NMFs) of the stratum corneum (SC) are integral pieces of the self-regulating barrier strategy which comprises one of the most important functions of human skin and seems to be related to biomechanical responses of the SC. Objectives: This work presents the contributions of the lipid bilayers and NMFs to the barrier properties and mechanical responses of human SC. Methods: We performed 2 biomechanical experiments, substrate curvature testing and double cantilever beam cohesion measurements, on isolated human SC exposed to either water, a 1:1 mixture of acetone/ether, or a 1:1 mixture of chloroform/methanol for various durations. Results: We show that treating ex vivo SC with organic solvents results in lipid extraction which increases with duration of exposure. This extraction is tied to a remarkably linear increase in the levels and rates of biaxial stress development during drying/hydration cycles. This effect appears to be tied to the total amounts of lipids extracted. Furthermore, striking changes are seen in the intercellular cohesion properties of the tissue after solvent exposure. Interestingly, changes in drying stress profiles are not observed after treatment with water, which has been previously shown to remove NMFs from the tissue, and which therefore might be expected to induce changes in the drying behavior of the skin. However, changes in intercellular cohesion and the SC cohesion gradient are seen, suggesting impacts on the corneodesmosome protein binding junctions within the tissue. Conclusions: These results suggest that lipid loss causes marked increases in SC drying stresses, which may in turn contribute to changes in skin perception. NMF extraction may be important in vivo, but has remarkably little impact in isolated SC.

Biophysical assessment of persistent effects of moisturizers after their daily applications: evaluation of corneotherapy

Abstract:Background: Although effective moisturizers can improve xerotic skin changes immediately, their effects are only transient, because the materials applied to the stratum corneum (SC) are easily shed from the skin surface by the daily desquamation process. However, there are a few lines of clinical as well as experimental evidence suggesting that, once application of effective moisturizers is repeated daily, they may produce persistent effects without being influenced by the desquamation of the skin surface. If we can expect such pharmacological effects by simple repeated applications of moisturizers on the skin surface, it will provide a great motivation for the introduction of corneotherapy into the treatment of xerotic skin problems. Objective: This study was designed not only to confirm the feasibility of corneotherapy but to propose a practical method to assess such long-lasting effects of moisturizers by using biophysical methods. Methods: We conducted applications of various moisturizers twice daily to different areas of the flexor surface of the forearms for the initial 5 days of the first week. Thereafter, we performed biophysical measurements of the SC of these areas in the second week, namely 3, 5 and 7 days after their last applications. Results: Daily repeated applications of moisturizers did not induce any change in the water barrier function of the SC or in the size of desquamating corneocytes, a parameter for turnover rate of the SC. However, they substantially increased high-frequency conductance, a parameter for the hydration state of the skin surface, for several days in both normal individuals and patients with atopic xerosis, although the lasting effects were shorter in the latter. The obtained data enabled us to rank the efficacy of moisturizers either according to the duration of the lasting effects or the magnitude of an increase in the hydration levels of the SC. Conclusion: The present results confirmed the feasibility of corneotherapy, in which even simple application of moisturizers targeted at the SC can produce unexpected persistent clinical effects after their repeated treatments. The method described in this study constitutes a practical assay system to evaluate the efficacy of topical agents used for dry skin problems objectively and quantitatively.
Effect of friction on vibrotactile sensation of normal and dehydrated skin

Abstract:Background: Vibrotactile sensation mediated is highly dependent on surface mechanical and frictional properties. Dehydration of skin could change these properties. Objectives: To investigate the relationship between friction and vibrotactile sensation of normal and dehydrated skin. Methods: Vibrations were firstly measured during surface exploration using a biomimetic sensor. Piglet skin was used as human skin model to study frictional properties for both normal and dehydrated skin using an atomic force microscope on nanoscale and a pin-on-disk tribometer on macroscale. Effect of vibrational frequency on friction and vibrotactile perception was also observed on nano and macro scale for normal and dehydrated skin. Results: The result indicated that dehydrated skin was less sensitive than normal skin. The coefficient of friction of dehydrated skin is smaller than that of normal skin on both nano and macro scale. The coefficient of friction increases as increasing scanning frequencies. Conclusion: There is a positive correlation between coefficient of friction and vibrotactile sensation on nanoscale and macroscale.
Anti-friction mechanism of sinusoidal texture with various intervals: the synergistic effect of dynamic pressure and tribofilm

Abstract:Reasonable texture intervals can effectively generate a local dynamic pressure effect and promote the tribofilm formation. A friction experiment combined with simulation analysis is employed to investigate the effect mechanism of sinusoidal texture intervals on surface friction properties. The synergistic antifriction mechanism between the hydrodynamic pressure effect of texture and the tribofilm is discussed. The results display that synergistic texture lubrication has a beneficial effect on improving tribological properties. The surface with a textured area density of 25% displays the optimal tribological properties. Moreover, friction reduction mechanism under different working conditions is discussed. Higher sliding speed is beneficial to anti-friction property by promoting dynamic pressure lubrication, while larger load mainly facilitates the formation of surface friction film to reduce friction.

Abstract:The boundary lubrication mechanism at the articulating surface of natural synovial joints has been the subject of much discussion in tribology. In this study, to elucidate the lubricating function of the superficial area of articular cartilage and synovial fluid (SF), cartilage specimens were processed with four different treatments: gentle and severe washing with detergent, incubation in NaCl solution, and trypsin digestion to selectively remove certain constituents from the cartilage surface. Subsequently, the frictional characteristics were examined in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and SF against glass. Angularly reciprocating sliding tests with a spherical glass probe and square articular cartilage specimens were performed at low contact loads in the mN range to extract the frictional behavior in the superficial area of the cartilage specimens. Meanwhile, the cartilage surface was observed to confirm the effects of treatments on the morphology of the cartilage surface using a fluorescence microscope and water-immersion methods. The coefficient of friction (COF) of the prepared cartilage specimens was varied from 0.05 to over 0.3 in PBS. However, a certain group of cartilage specimens exhibited a low COF of less than 0.1 with limited variation. For the low COF group of specimens, all four treatments increased the COF in PBS to different extents, and fluorescence microscopy revealed that the integrity of the cartilage surface was deteriorated by treatments. This means that the intact cartilage surface had lubricating constituents to maintain low friction, and the removal of such constituents resulted in the loss of the intrinsic boundary lubricity of the cartilage surface. The variation in the COF of the cartilage specimens was suppressed in SF because it had a clear boundary lubrication effect on the cartilage surface. The lubricating effect of SF could be confirmed even after degenerative treatment.

Abstract:BACKGROUND/AIMS: The physical properties of the stratum corneum (SC) change with its water content, which is regulated by the presence of water solutes (natural moisturizing factors) and lipids in the SC, and are considered to be responsible for the induction of desquamation, skin surface roughness, and fine wrinkles. Recently a new type of tactile sensor developed for evaluating the physical properties of objects has been introduced as a simple, non-invasive method to evaluate them; because the data obtained with this sensor have not yet been characterized in detail, we compared them with other physical parameters of the skin. METHODS: A change in resonant frequency (Deltaf ) was measured under various levels of pressure applied by a tactile sensor placed on the cheeks of 29 women. We also measured high-frequency conductance that reflects the hydration state of the skin surface, water holding capacity of the SC, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), skin flexibility, skin elasticity, amino acid composition of the SC, and desquamation index of the SC at the same time, and evaluated the correlation between Deltaf and other physical parameters. RESULTS: The correlation between Deltaf and high-frequency conductance of the SC, and that between Deltaf and the water holding capacity of the SC were substantially high. Deltaf under high pressure was more closely correlated with the acidic amino acid ratio of the SC. Deltaf also showed a correlation with desquamation index for thickness of the SC as well as with skin elasticity, independent of the applied pressure. CONCLUSIONS: Because Deltaf determined with the tactile sensor correlated with other physical parameters specific to the properties of the SC, such as high frequency conductance of the SC, its water holding capacity, ratio of acidic amino acids, and the desquamation index for thickness, the physical properties of the SC may be adequately evaluated with the measurements of Deltaf.

Abstract:Effects of different coatings on the tribological properties of very thin oil films in the nanoscale were investigated. The film thickness and friction force were measured by the technique of relative optical interference intensity (ROM and a stress-strain force measuring system with high precision. The results indicate that the film thickness complies with the elastohydrodynamic theory in the high-speed region but it differs from the theory in the low-speed region. The physicochemical properties of coating surfaces have a great effect on the tribological properties of the oil film in the nanoscale. The coating with higher surface energy gives rise to a thicker film and a higher friction coefficient. Abstract:The modes of attachments, detachments and relaxations of molecules of rubbers and gels on solid surfaces are keys to understanding their frictional properties. An early stochastic model of polymer relaxations on surfaces was given by Schallamach, which has now evolved in various ways. A review of these developments is presented along with the experimental data that elucidate the kinetic friction of smooth rubber against smooth surfaces. These soft rubbers exhibit various types of instabilities while sliding on surfaces. A few examples of these instabilities are provided.
