Abstract:Ozone treatment at a suitable concentration can improve the antioxidant capacity of postharvest fruits. However, few studies have examined the antioxidant bioactive compounds in ozone-treated postharvest strawberries, especially in relation to proteomics. In this study, the total phenol content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and total anthocyanin content (TAC) were used as the main antioxidant compound indicators and unlabeled proteomics was used to study the metabolism of phenylpropanoids in postharvest strawberries (Jingtaoxiang) treated with different concentrations of ozone (0, 1, 3, and 5 ppm) throughout the duration of storage. The results showed that the postharvest strawberries treated with 5 ppm ozone concentration exhibited improved accumulation of total phenols, flavonoids and anthocyanins in the antioxidant bioactive compounds, which was beneficial to the expression of phenylpropanoid metabolism-related proteins over the whole storage period compared with the other three groups. The results of proteomics were consistent with the changes in the key metabolites of phenylpropanoids, which indicated that ozone treatment at a suitable concentration aids the accumulation of TPC, TAC and TFC by promoting the key proteins associated with phenylpropanoid metabolism.

Abstract:The aim of this research was to determine the impact of hydrogen peroxide spraying and ozone gas fumigation during the growing season of tomato plants grown under cover on the mechanical and chemical parameters of fruit harvested from these plants. Tomato plants were grown under cover in accordance with the principles of good agricultural practice in the soil and climatic conditions of southeastern Poland. During the growing season, tomato fruits were collected for testing in order to determine the impact of the applied variable factors on the modification of selected metabolic pathways of bioactive compounds. As part of the tests on the chemical properties of the fruits, the content of ascorbic acid, the total content of polyphenols, and the antioxidant potential were determined. Additionally, the influence of the tested variable factors on the mechanical properties of tomato fruits was determined. In the case of the total polyphenol content, the most beneficial effects were observed for fruits collected from plants treated with ozonation at a dose of 2 ppm for 3 min and spraying the plants with 1% hydrogen peroxide. The highest antioxidant potential was recorded for fruits of the variants ozonated with doses of 2 ppm for 1 min, 2 ppm for 1.5 min, and 2 ppm for 3 min compared to the remaining variants and controls. In turn, the vitamin C content increased significantly in the tested fruits after the ozonation of plants with a dose of 2 ppm for 1 min and ozonation with a dose of 2 ppm for 3 min combined with spraying plants with 3% hydrogen peroxide. In the case of the mechanical properties of tomato fruits, only the ozonation dose of 2 ppm for 3 min significantly improved them.

Abstract:The effects of different concentrations of dissolved oxygen (DO; 4, 6, 7.5, and 9 mg L−1, control (CK), O1, O2, and O3, respectively) on the growth, photosynthesis, yield and quality of tomatoes and changes in soil microorganisms in a greenhouse were studied. These effects were evaluated for two years via a comparative design. (1) The effects of DO on the leaf area index (LAI), net photosynthetic rate (A), vitamin C (Vc) content, soluble sugar content, lycopene content, dry matter accumulation (Da), soil respiration rate, microbial carbon content, microbial nitrogen content, yield, irrigation water-use efficiency (IWUE), water-use efficiency (WUE), and soil oxygen content (SOC) were very significant (P < 0.01). (2) In 2018 (2019), the LAI, A, Vc content, soluble sugar content, lycopene content, Da, soil respiration rate, soil microbial carbon content and soil microbial nitrogen content in the O3 group increased by 25.59% (20.88%), 12.89% (36.14%), 38.39% (27.07%), 18.31% (47.67%), 18.45% (52.50%), 15.34% (12.58%), 48.33% (68.97%), 46.73% (64.38%), and 27.27% (36.84%), respectively, compared with those in the CK group. (3) In 2018 (2019), the yield, IWUE, WUE and SOC in the O3 group increased by 17.51% (15.09%), 17.48% (15.06%), 33.87% (34.97%) and 50.97% (53.34%), respectively, compared with those in the CK group. (4) The effects of aerated irrigation (AI) on the growth, photosynthesis, quality, biomass, yield, WUE and SOC of the tomatoes, as well as the soil microorganisms, were consistent such that O3 > O2 > O1 > CK, but their levels of significance differed slightly. When the DO of the irrigation water was increased, the SOC increased indirectly, the soil environment was improved, and the growth of the tomato plants increased. Moreover, these effects were also conducive to improved WUE and tomato quality and efficiency. This study provides a new irrigation model and a theoretical basis for the popularization of greenhouse crop cultivation.

Antibacterial Efficacy and Physiochemical Effects of Ozone Microbubble Water on Tomato

Abstract:The consumption of fresh produce is steadily increasing and chlorine washing is the most commonly used method of disinfecting fresh produce. However, chlorine washing possesses a potential risk. Hence, this study used ozone microbubble (OMB) water to disinfect Salmonella Enteritidis, S. Typhimurium, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli on tomatoes. After injecting ozone into the microbubble generator, OMB was fulfilled in a 10 L tank for 10 or 20 min. The inoculated tomatoes were washed for 30 or 60 s. Control groups included unwashed, water-washed, microbubble-only, and ozone-only. The microbial populations were significantly lower on the OMB-treated tomatoes than controls (p 0.05). When tomatoes were treated with OMB with 10 min fulfilling and 30-s washing, the differences of tested bacteria and water washing, ozone-only, and microbubble-only were: S. Enteritidis: 4.11, 3.37, 2.54 log CFU/tomato; S. Typhimurium: 4.83, 4.50, 2.78 log CFU/tomato; E. coli: 4.31, 4.08, 2.09 log CFU/tomato; S. aureus: 4.12, 3.93, 2.82 log CFU/tomato. In addition, significant higher ozone concentrations and conductivity were detected in OMB water than other groups (p 0.05). This study demonstrated that OMB effectively inactivated bacteria on tomatoes and did not affect the physical and sensory characteristics of tomatoes.

Abstract:Phyllosphere microorganisms are closely linked to plant health. This study investigated the effect of ozonated water, mancozeb, and thiophanate-methyl on phyllosphere microorganisms in strawberry plants of the “Hongyan” variety. Sequencing analysis of the phyllosphere bacterial and fungal communities was performed using 16S rRNA gene fragment and ITS1 region high-throughput sequencing after spraying ozonated water, mancozeb, thiophanate-methyl, and clear water. Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Firmicutes were the dominant bacterial phyla in strawberry. The relative abundance of Proteobacteria (82.71%) was higher in the ozonated water treatment group than in the other treatment groups, while the relative abundance of Actinobacteria (9.38%) was lower than in the other treatment groups. The strawberry phyllosphere fungal communities were mainly found in the phyla Basidiomycota and Ascomycota. The relative abundance of Basidiomycota was highest in the ozonated water treatment group (81.13%), followed by the mancozeb treatment group (76.01%), while the CK group only had an abundance of 43.38%. The relative abundance of Ascomycota was lowest in the ozonated water treatment group (17.98%), 23.12% in the mancozeb treatment group, 43.39% in the thiophanate-methyl treatment group, and 55.47% in the CK group. Pseudomonas, Halomonas, and Nesterenkonia were the dominant bacterial genera on strawberry surfaces, while Moesziomyces, Aspergillus, and Dirkmeia were the dominant fungal genera. Ozonated water was able to significantly increase the richness of bacteria and fungi and decrease fungal diversity. However, bacterial diversity was not significantly altered. Ozonated water effectively reduced the relative abundance of harmful fungi, such as Aspergillus, and Penicillium, and enriched beneficial bacteria, such as Pseudomonas and Actinomycetospora, more effectively than mancozeb and thiophanate-methyl. The results of the study show that ozonated water has potential as a biocide and may be able to replace traditional agents in the future to reduce environmental pollution.

Abstract:We investigated the frequency and subset origin of circulating factor VIII (FVIII)-specific CD4 T cells in healthy donors. Total CD4 T cells and purified CD4 T-cell subsets were stimulated with FVIII-loaded autologous dendritic cells and challenged for specificity in interferon-γ enzyme-linked immunospots. The number of specific T-cell lines allowed estimation of the frequency of T cells circulating in the blood of the donors. All the 16 healthy donors generated strong in vitro T-cell responses, leading to the generation of 154 FVIII-specific T-cell lines. The mean frequency of FVIII-specific CD4 T cells in healthy donors was similar to that of T cells specific for foreign antigens and greater than that of T cells specific for known immunogenic therapeutic proteins. Normal levels of endogenous FVIII in healthy donors therefore do not prevent a significant escape of FVIII-specific CD4 T cells from negative thymic selection. FVIII-specific T cells mainly originated from both the naïve and central memory cell subsets, but their frequencies remained low as compared with those of cells specific for foreign antigens in immunized donors. The observation of a spontaneous generation of FVIII-specific memory T cells without a global expansion suggests peculiar peripheral tolerance mechanisms to FVIII in healthy donors.

Abstract:The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of carbon dioxide (CO2) enrichment on the main health-promoting compounds and organoleptic characteristics of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) fruits grown in greenhouse. The contents of health-promoting compounds, including lycopene, β-carotene, and ascorbic acid, as well as the flavour, indicated by sugars, titrable acidity, and sugar/acid ratio, were markedly increased in CO2 enrichment fruits. Furthermore, CO2 enrichment significantly enhanced other organoleptic characteristics, including colour, firmness, aroma, and sensory attributes in tomato fruits. The results indicated that CO2 enrichment has potential in promoting the nutritional value and organoleptic characteristics of tomatoes.

Abstract:Current trends in agriculture are focused on implementing sustainable practices that avoid the use of chemical compounds. It is important to propose environmentally friendly methods, which may enhance plant growth physiology and yield without affecting soil microbial community as much. In this context, irrigation with ozonated water could be a potential strategy to reduce some chemical compounds in soils due to the degradative power of ozone. Here, we studied the impact of irrigation with ozonated water on the microbial community of a Mediterranean soil, and on Solanum lycopersicum L. agro-physiology and productivity in a greenhouse experiment. To this end, we evaluated: i) soil physicochemical properties, soil enzyme activities, microbial biomass via fatty acid analysis, microbial diversity (via amplicon sequencing), and ii) the nutrient content, physiology, phytohormone content, yield, and fruit quality of tomato plants. Our results indicate that soil physicochemical properties were significantly affected by the irrigation with ozonated water (OZ). We observed an increase in the content of total organic carbon (TOC), water-soluble nitrogen (WSN) and ammonium, and a decrease in soil pH due to the OZ treatment. In addition, a significant increase in alkaline phosphatase and fungal and bacterial biomass was also observed in the OZ treatment. It was observed that the prokaryotic community structure was affected by the OZ treatment, while that of fungi was undisturbed. The OZ treatment increased the photosynthetic rates of tomato plants and maintained water conditions when compared to control plants. The increased trans-Zeatin riboside (tZ-Rib) could provide rapid apical and root growth allowing adaptation to the new growing conditions. However, a more in-depth study on the physiological response of the plant to this treatment would be of interest, as it would help with the implementation of this strategy in agricultural fields in a safe manner, and with obtaining higher plant yields.
Selenium Combined with Methyl Jasmonate to Control Tomato Gray Mold by Optimizing Microbial Community Structure in Plants

Abstract:Tomato cultivation is seriously affected by infection from Botrytis cinerea. The safe and effective control of tomato gray mold remains elusive. Plant-related microbial communities regulate not only plant metabolism but also plant immune systems. In this study, we observed that Selenium application in soil combined with foliar spraying of methyl jasmonate could reduce Botrytis cinerea infection in tomato fruits and leaves and improve tomato fruit quality. The infection rate of leaves decreased from 42.19% to 25.00%, and the vitamin C content increased by 22.14%. The bacterial community structure of the tomato was studied by using amplicon sequencing technology. The leaf bacterial alpha diversity of tomatoes treated with Se plus methyl jasmonate was significantly higher than that of the control. Then we isolated five strains antagonistic to Botrytis cinerea in vitro from tomato leaves in the treatment of Se plus methyl jasmonate. The antagonistic strains were identified as Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus velezensis. Spraying mixed antagonistic strain suspension significantly inhibited the diameter of Botrytis cinerea with an inhibition rate of 40.99%. This study revealed the key role of plant-beneficial bacteria recruited by Se combined with methyl jasmonate in improving tomato plant disease resistance. These findings may benefit our understanding of the new regulation of microorganisms on Botrytis cinerea.

Effect of controlled atmosphere storage, modified atmosphere packaging and gaseous ozone treatment on the survival of Salmonella Enteritidis on cherry tomatoes

Abstract:In recent years, outbreaks of infections associated with raw and minimally processed fruits and vegetables have been reported. The objective of this study was to analyse the growth/survival of Salmonella Enteritidis at spot-inoculated or stem-injected cherry tomatoes during passive modified atmosphere packaging (MAP), controlled atmosphere (CA) and to compare the results with those of air storage at 7 and 22 degrees C. During MAP, the gas composition equilibrated to 6% O2/4% CO2. CO2 level was maintained as 5% through the term of CA storage at 7 and 22 degrees C. The results demonstrate that S. Enteritidis can survive and/or grow during the storage of tomatoes depending on the location site of the pathogen on fruit, suspension cell density and storage temperature. During MAP, CA and air storage, S. Enteritidis with initial population of 7.0 log10 cfu/tomato survived on tomato surfaces with an approximate decrease of 4.0-5.0 log10 cfu/tomato in population within the storage period; however, in the case of initial population of 3.0 log10 cfu/tomato, cells died completely on day 4 during MAP storage and on day 6 during both CA and air storage. The death rate of S. Enteritidis on the surfaces of tomatoes that were stored in MAP was faster than that of stored in air and in CA. Storage temperature was effective on the survival of S. Enteritidis for the samples stored at ambient atmosphere; cells died completely on day 6 at 7 degrees C and on day 8 at 22 degrees C. Stem scars provided protective environments for Salmonella; an approximate increase of 1.0 log10 cfu/tomato in stem-scar population was observed during MAP, CA and air storage at 22 degrees C within the period of 20 days. Cells survived with no significant change in number at 7 degrees C. During the research, the effect of ozone treatment (5-30 mg/l ozone gas for 0-20 min) was also considered for surface sanitation before storage. Gaseous ozone treatment has bactericidal effect on S. Enteritidis, inoculated on the surface of the tomatoes and can be used for surface sanitation of S. Enteritidis on tomatoes before storage at different conditions. Ten mg/l ozone gas treatment with different time intervals of 5 and 15 min was found to be effective respectively on low and high dose inoculum levels of S. Enteritidis attached for 1 h. Another variable considered during ozone treatment was the 4 h attachment time.
Effect of ozone in combination with antagonistic yeast on postharvest gray mold rot incidence in strawberry fruits

Abstract:In order to search for an alternative to synthetic fungicides for the control of postharvest decay of strawberry fruits,the potential of using ozone in combination with Cryptococcus laurentii(Kufferath)Skinner for the control of postharvest gray mold rot incidence of strawberry fruits was investigated.The results showed that ozone significantly decreased the incidence of gray mold rot in strawberry fruits and inhibited the growth of B.cinerea in vivo and in vitro.After three-day storage,the gray mold rot incidence of strawberry fruits that treated with the combination of ozone and C.laurentii was 29.63%,which was significantly lower than that of the control(70.37%)or the treatments of ozone and C.laurentii as single use(48.15%and 44.44%respectively).The population of the yeast in wounded fruits increased remarkably after inoculation at 20℃or 4℃,and it remained at a high level.The treatments of ozone alone or in combination with C.laurentii resulted in a transient increase in the activities of polyphenoloxidase,peroxidase,phenylalanine ammonialyase,catalase,lipoxgenase and β-1,3-glucanase,and restrained the increase in the activity of lipoxgenase in strawberry fruits.

Abstract:Phase unwrapping is a challenging task for interferometry based techniques in the presence of noise. The majority of existing phase unwrapping techniques are path-following methods, which explicitly or implicitly define an intelligent path and integrate phase difference along the path to mitigate the effect of erroneous pixels. In this paper, a path-independent unwrapping method is proposed where the unwrapped phase gradient is determined from the wrapped phase and subsequently denoised by a TV minimization based method. Unlike the wrapped phase map where 2π phase jumps are present, the gradient of the unwrapped phase map is smooth and slowly-varying at noise-free areas. On the other hand, the noise is greatly amplified by the differentiation process, which makes it easier to separate from the smooth phase gradient. Thus an approximate unwrapped phase can be obtained by integrating the denoised phase gradient. The final unwrapped phase map is subsequently determined by adding the first few modes of the unwrapped phase. The proposed method is most suitable for unwrapping phase maps without abrupt phase changes. Its capability has been demonstrated both numerically and by experimental data from shearography and electronic speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI).
Control Effect of Tomato and Maize Intercropping Against Tomato Powdery Mildew

Abstract:[Objective]The paper was to discuss the control effect of tomato and maize intercropping against tomato powdery mildew.[Method]Three tomato varieties (6629,Jin’aihong and Yuxing) and two maize varieties were selected as materials,and control effects of maize and tomato intercropping against tomato powdery mildew were studied in the paper.[Result]Tomato and maize intercropping had obvious control effect against tomato powdery mildew.The relative control effect of 6629 was the highest (61.1%),followed by Jin’aihong (49.5%),and the control effect of Yuxing was the lowest (30.4%).[Conclusion]The study provides the theoretical basis for pollution-free production of tomato.
Promotion of tomato growth by the volatiles produced by the hypovirulent strain QT5-19 of the plant gray mold fungus Botrytis cinerea

Abstract:Our previous study identified a hypovirulent strain QT5-19 of Botrytis cinerea, the causal agent of the plant gray mold disease, and found that QT5-19 can produce volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with high antifungal activity and high control efficacy against B. cinerea. However, impact of the QT5-19 VOCs on plant growth remains unknown. This study was conducted to investigate the impact of the QT5-19 VOCs on tomato growth, and to elucidate the mechanisms for the plant growth-promoting (PGP) activity of the QT5-19 VOCs. Results showed that compared to the control treatment, the QT5-19 VOCs significantly (P < 0.05) promoted tomato growth, and the PGP activity of the QT5-19 VOCs acted in dose- and time-dependent manners. Results also showed that the values of photosynthetic assimilation, stomatal conductance and transpiration, water use efficiency and chlorophyll content in the treatments of the QT5-19 VOCs were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than the corresponding values in the control treatment. The QT5-19 VOCs up-regulated expression of the genes for expansins (EXP2, EXP9 and EXP18), IAA (SlIAA1, SlIAA3 and SlIAA9), cytokinins (SlCKX1) and gibberellins in leaves and/or roots, whereas down-regulated expression of the gene ACO1 for ethylene in both organs. Moreover, enhanced accumulation of auxins and decreased accumulation of ethylene were observed in tomato roots in the treatment of the QT5-19 VOCs, compared to the control treatment. These results suggest that the QT5-19 VOCs probably promote tomato growth through improving photosynthesis and biosynthesis of expansins and IAA, and reducing ethylene biosynthesis. This study suggests that QT5-19 is a versatile biocontrol control agent.

Abstract:While surface sterilization can minimize the postharvest loss of fruits and vegetables, it depends on concentration, treatment duration, storage condition, and crops. This study was conducted to investigate the consequences of chlorine dioxide (ClO 2 ) gas on post-harvest quality and shelf life of tomato fruits during the modified atmosphere packaging storage. Tomato fruits of light red maturity stage were harvested at Gangwon province in the Republic of Korea . Fruits were dipped in fungal suspension and, afterward, some of them were sterilized with NaOCl, while others were sterilized with ClO 2 gas. On the final storage day, the 5 ppm ClO 2 gas 12 hours treated tomato fruits showed the least carbon dioxide and ethylene, and the utmost oxygen concentration. The least fresh weight loss, prolonged shelf life and the most suppressed fungal incidence were obtained by the 5 ppm ClO 2 gas 12 hours treatment. As compared to other treatments, the 5 ppm ClO 2 gas 12 hours treatment yielded higher firmness, titratable acidity and vitamin C, and lower soluble solids. Therefore, the 5 ppm ClO 2 gas 12 hours treatment may be useful to prevent fungal incidence as well as to retain the postharvest quality and increase the shelf life of tomato fruits.
Effects of Nutrient Solution Application Rates on Yield, Quality, and Water–Fertilizer Use Efficiency on Greenhouse Tomatoes Using Grown-in Coir

Abstract:The yield, quality, and water–fertilizer use efficiency of crops are important parameters for assessing rational water and fertilizer management. For an optimal water and fertilizer system with respect to the nutrient solution irrigation of greenhouse tomatoes using cultivation substrates, a two-year greenhouse cultivation experiment was conducted from 2022 to 2023. Three drip fertigation treatments (T1, T2, and T3) were implemented in the experiment, where nutrient solutions were supplied when the substrate's water content reached 60%, 70%, and 80%. The frequency of nutrient solution applications is based on weighing coconut coir strips in the morning and evening at 7:00 to determine the daily water consumption of plants. Nutrient solutions were supplied when the substrate's water content reached the lower limit, and the upper limit for nutrient supply was set at 100% of the substrate water content. The nutrient solution application was carried out multiple times throughout the day, avoiding the midday heat. The nutrient solution formula used was the soilless tomato cultivation formula from South China Agricultural University. The results show that plant height and the leaf area index rapidly increased in the early and middle stages, and later growth tended to stabilize; the daily transpiration of tomatoes increased with an increase in nutrient solution supply, and it was the greatest in the T3 treatment. Between the amount of nutrient solution application and the number of years, the yield increased with the increase of the amount of nutrient solution, showing T3 > T2 > T1. Although the average yield of the T2 treatment was slightly lower than that of the T3 treatment by 3.65%, the average irrigation water use efficiency, water use efficiency, and partial fertilizer productivity of the T2 treatment were significantly higher than those of the T3 treatment by 29.10%, 19.99%, and 28.89%, respectively (p < 0.05). Additionally, soluble solid, vitamin C, and soluble sugar contents and the sugar–acid ratio of tomatoes in the T2 treatment were greater than those in the other two treatments (p < 0.05). Using the TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution) method, it was concluded that the nutrient solution application rate of 70% can significantly increase water and fertilizer use efficiency and markedly improve the nutritional and flavor quality of the fruit without a significant reduction in yield. This finding provides significant guidance for the high-yield, high-quality, and efficient production of coconut coir-based cultivated tomatoes in greenhouses.

Abstract:Black spot caused by Alternaria alternata is one of the main postharvest diseases of tomato fruits. This research aimed to investigate biocontrol efficacy of Pichia caribbica combined with oligochitosan (OCH) against black spot of tomato fruits and explore the mechanisms involved in improved disease resistance of the fruits by yeast combined with OCH based on analysis of reactive oxygen species (ROS) metabolism. The results indicated that in comparison with P. caribbica alone, yeast combined with OCH (2000 μg/mL) could further reduce black spot of tomato fruits. P. caribbica combined with OCH increased NADPH oxidase (NOX) activity in the fruits compared with the control and the group treated with yeast alone. The activities of enzymatic system for ROS scavenging including antioxidant enzymes, enzymes involved in ascorbate–glutathione (AsA-GSH) and GPX (glutathione peroxidase) cycles, and glutathione S-transferase (GST) in the fruits were induced by yeast combined with OCH. Additionally, the contents of ascorbic acid (AsA) and glutathione (GSH) belonging to non-enzymatic system for ROS scavenging were enhanced in the fruits. Collectively, the induction of NOX and the improvement of enzymatic and non-enzymatic systems for ROS scavenging resulted in the decrease in O2 –·, H2O2 and malondialdehyde (MDA) production in the fruits, thus promoting the disease resistance of tomato fruits. This research will provide new ideas for the control of postharvest diseases of tomato fruits.

Abstract:Botrytis cinerea is a destructive phytopathogenic ascomycete causing severe pre- and postharvest yield losses in tomato-growing areas worldwide. Due to fungicide resistance development in B. cinerea strains, its chemical control has become a serious challenge for tomato growers. In the present investigation, 47 fungal isolates were obtained and screened for their biocontrol potency against B. cinerea , and 12 isolates showed significant biocontrol efficacy. In 12 fungal bioagents, Trichoderma harzianum isolate Tr‐3, identified by internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region sequence analysis, significantly suppressed the in vitro mycelial growth of B. cinerea . Furthermore, different concentrations (10, 25, 50, and 100 ppm) of zinc nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) demonstrated remarkable suppression of in vitro mycelial growth. At higher concentrations (100 ppm) of ZnO-NPs, 88% mycelial growth inhibition of the pathogen was recorded. Moreover, foliar applications of T. harzianum suspension and ZnO-NPs in the greenhouse provided a promising control of B. cinerea infection in tomato plants, and a significant reduction in disease severity (68.5 and 83.4%, respectively) was recorded. While the foliar applications attenuate disease intensity, a significant increase in plant biomass was also recorded, which demonstrated the plant growth-promoting potential of indigenous T. harzianum and ZnO-NPs. Additionally, the antioxidant and phytochemical analysis of treated tomato leaves demonstrated higher levels of catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (PO) activity in ZnO-NP-treated plants followed by T. harzianum -treated plants. Thus, these results suggested that ZnO-NPs and indigenous T. harzianum as biocontrol could suppress B. cinerea infection in the greenhouse, either directly or indirectly as resistance inducers. Therefore, ZnO-NPs and T. harzianum may be applied as an alternative to fungicides to alleviate gray mold disease in tomato caused by the resistance problems in B. cinerea .

Abstract:To investigate the effects of low temperature (LT) and weak light (WL) on tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L., cv.) during flowering and fruit-setting periods, a controlled experiment was conducted. Two levels of day/night temperature and PAR were set: S1 (18/8°C, 200 μmol m-2 s-1), S2 (12/2°C, 200 μmol m-2 s-1), S3 (18/8°C, 80 μmol m-2 s-1), and S4 (12/2°C, 80 μmol m-2 s-1 ), taking 28/18°C and 600 μmol m-2 s-1 as control (CK). The results showed that during stress stage, the Chlorophyll (Chl) a, photosynthetic rate at irradiation saturation (Pmax), light saturation point, stomatal conductance, stomatal limitation value, maximal photochemical efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm), electron transport rate of PSII, and catalase activity of S1, S2, S3, and S4 were lower than that of CK, while the Chl b, carotenoid, light compensation point, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and malondialdehyde (MDA) were opposite. Vitamin C, soluble solid, soluble protein, and lycopene were lower than that of CK, while organic acid was opposite. Plant height and stem diameter significantly correlated with Chl and Pmax. After 25 d of recovery, the Fv/Fm, SOD, and MDA for S1 and S2 almost could recover to CK level, but the values for S3 and S4 could not recover to CK level.
