Abstract:Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) considered a public health problem that affects vulnerable and at-risk populations, such as sex workers. We designed a retrospective cross-sectional study based on the review of health evaluation records of sex workers who attended consultations to obtain comprehensive health cards at a Health Center in the Province of San Vicente de Cañete in Peru during the year 2020. We obtained sociodemographic and employment information and the RPR (rapid plasma reagin) test results to diagnose syphilis. We evaluated 220 records of sex workers with a mean age of 27.9 ± 6.9 years and the initiation of sexual relations of 16.0 ± 1.6 years, while the accumulated time they had as sex workers was 2.9 ± 2.4 years. 85.9% of those evaluated reported being heterosexual. The prevalence of syphilis was 7.3% (CI95: 4.2%–11.5%). Being a homosexual sex worker was significantly associated with syphilis (OR: 19.6; 95% CI: 4.8–80.0) compared to heterosexuals. The prevalence of syphilis presented a value similar to that reported in other Latin American and national studies, and it is evident that it is a health problem among sex workers.

Abstract:Syphilis is a significant public health concern worldwide. According to the 2020 estimates, nearly 7.1 million new cases of syphilis have been reported globally, with over 30% of these cases reported from American nations, particularly Brazil. Concerns have been raised regarding the susceptibility of specific groups to syphilis due to challenges and vulnerabilities that place these groups at a higher risk of infections or complications in the treatment outcomes. The present study aimed to compare the seroprevalence and the factors associated with syphilis among such high-risk groups. The study was designed as a cross-sectional one and was conducted with pregnant women, people living with HIV (PLHIV), people living with tuberculosis (PLTB), indigenous and healthy populations in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The study was conducted between June 2019 and August 2022, during which the included patients were subjected to treponemal and non-treponemal serological assays. The study also included a survey conducted through a self-reported questionnaire to collect information regarding the participants' demographics and sexual behaviors. A total of 550 samples were collected, with 110 participants in each of the five groups. The results of the study revealed that the seroprevalence of Treponema pallidum infection in pregnant women, PLHIV, PLTB, indigenous and healthy populations of the study region was 10% (n = 11/110), 41.81% (n = 46/110), 17.27% (n = 19/110), 5.45% (n = 6/110), and 8.18% (n = 9/110), respectively. Homosexual orientation (p = 0.04) and a history of sexually transmitted infection (STI) (p = 0.01) were associated with the seroprevalence of T. pallidum infection in PLHIV. However, no such associations were noted in the remaining four groups. The seroprevalence of T. pallidum infection was observed to vary significantly among the different high-risk groups, which highlighted the persistent concern of syphilis, particularly among vulnerable populations. These findings underscore the significance of focused interventions and public health strategies customized to the specific requirements of each of the groups evaluated in the present study to decrease the number of cases of syphilis and thereby prevent future complications in patients with other serious infections.

Abstract:Venereal syphilis, caused by the spirochete Treponema pallidum subsp. pallidum ( TPA ), is surging worldwide, underscoring the need for a vaccine with global efficacy. Vaccine development requires an understanding of syphilis epidemiology and clinical presentation as well as genomic characterization of TPA strains circulating within at-risk populations. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical, demographic, and molecular features of early syphilis cases in Cali, Colombia. We conducted a cross-sectional study to identify individuals with early syphilis (ES) in Cali, Colombia through a city-wide network of public health centers, private sector HIV clinics and laboratory databases from public health institutions. Whole blood (WB), skin biopsies (SB), and genital and oral lesion swabs were obtained for measurement of treponemal burdens by polA quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and for whole-genome sequencing (WGS). Among 1,966 individuals screened, 128 participants met enrollment criteria: 112 (87%) with secondary (SS), 15 (12%) with primary (PS) and one with early latent syphilis; 66/128 (52%) self-reported as heterosexual, while 48 (38%) were men who have sex with men (MSM). Genital ulcer swabs had the highest polA copy numbers (67 copies/μl) by qPCR with a positivity rate (PR) of 73%, while SS lesions had 42 polA copies/μl with PR of 62%. WB polA positivity was more frequent in SS than PS (42% vs 7%, respectively; p = 0.009). Isolation of TPA from WB by rabbit infectivity testing (RIT) was achieved in 5 (56%) of 9 ES WB samples tested. WGS from 33 Cali patient samples, along with 10 other genomic sequences from South America (9 from Peru, 1 from Argentina) used as comparators, confirmed that SS14 was the predominant clade, and that half of all samples had mutations associated with macrolide ( i . e ., azithromycin) resistance. Variability in the outer membrane protein (OMP) and vaccine candidate BamA (TP0326) was mapped onto the protein's predicted structure from AlphaFold. Despite the presence of mutations in several extracellular loops (ECLs), ECL4, an immunodominant loop and proven opsonic target, was highly conserved in this group of Colombian and South American TPA isolates. This study offers new insights into the sociodemographic and clinical features of venereal syphilis in a highly endemic area of Colombia and illustrates how genomic sequencing of regionally prevalent TPA strains can inform vaccine development.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP) on production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in endothelial cells. METHODS Human umbilical vein endothelial cell line ECV304 were stimulated with AOPP-modified bovine serum albumin (AOPP-BSA) prepared by oxidation of BSA with HOCl in vitro. ROS production in the cells was evaluated by kinetic measurement of dichlorofluoroscein (DCF) fluorescence produced by oxidation of an oxidant-sensitive dye 2,7-dichlorefluorescin (DCFH) using VICTOR 1420 multilabel counter. RESULTS AOPP-BSA could induce ROS production in ECV304 cells time- and dose-dependently, and the quantity of ROS increased with the oxidation degree of BSA. Pretreatment of cells with a small-molecular-mass glutathione peroxidase mimic ebselen or NADPH oxidase inhibitor apocynin inhibited ROS production by 65% and 29% respectively. CONCLUSION AOPP-BSA induces ROS production in endothelial cells, partially mediated by NADPH oxidase activation.
Prevalence of syphilis among adults and adolescents in five sub-Saharan African countries: findings from Population-based HIV Impact Assessment surveys

Abstract:Background: HIV and syphilis are common sexually transmitted infections in sub-Saharan Africa. We aimed to investigate the prevalence and distribution of active syphilis while considering HIV status, demographic characteristics, and behavioural characteristics. Methods: The Population-based HIV Impact Assessment surveys used a cross-sectional, two-stage, stratified cluster sample design to collect data in Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe from 2015 to 2018. Eligible participants were aged 15 years and older and provided demographic information, behavioural information, and blood specimens for HIV and syphilis testing. Active syphilis was defined as the presence of both treponemal and non-treponemal antibodies, measured using an antigen-based rapid test. Multivariable logistic regression models with survey weights were applied. The estimated number of participants with active syphilis in each country was calculated by multiplying the survey-weighted syphilis prevalence by the corresponding participant population size from the latest national census data. The total burden across the five countries was obtained by summing these estimates. Findings: 102 831 participants enrolled in the five surveys (54 583 [57·6%] participants were female, 48 248 [42·4%] participants were male, 9036 [9·9%] participants were HIV positive). Population-based syphilis prevalence was 0·9% (95% CI 0·7-1·1) in Tanzania and Zimbabwe, 2·1% (1·9-2·4) in Uganda, and 3·0% (2·7-3·4) in Zambia. Overall, an estimated 1 027 615 (95% CI 877 243-1 158 246) participants had active syphilis across the five countries (266 383 HIV-positive and 761 232 HIV-negative individuals). Syphilis prevalence was higher among people living with HIV (range from 2·6% [95% CI 1·1-4·0] in Ethiopia to 9·6% [8·1-11·0] in Zambia) than among those without HIV (range from 0·8% [0·7-1·0] in Tanzania to 2·1% [1·8-2·4] in Zimbabwe). The odds of active syphilis were higher among people living with HIV than in those who were HIV negative (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] range from 2·5 [95% CI 1·8-3·4] in Uganda to 5·9 [3·8-9·2] in Zimbabwe), among divorced, separated, or widowed individuals (aOR range from 1·5 [1·1-2·0] in Uganda to 2·7 [1·7-4·3] in Zimbabwe), and among those reporting two or more sexual partners in the previous 12 months (aOR range from 1·1 [CI 0·8-1·5] in Uganda to 1·9 [1·1-3·3] in Zimbabwe). Interpretation: This study shows the high burden of syphilis in five sub-Saharan African countries, with a correlation between HIV and active syphilis, underscoring the need for integrated sexual health services and targeted diagnosis, prevention, and treatment strategies to address this public health challenge. Abstract:Background: Syphilis remains a significant global public health concern, and one of its consequences in pregnant women is the potential occurrence of congenital syphilis due to Treponema pallidum infection. This study determined the prevalence of syphilis among pregnant women undergoing prenatal care in a neighborhood on the outskirts of the city of Belém, Brazilian Amazon. Methods: This cross-sectional study used data from clinical records of 611 pregnant women who underwent prenatal care at a public health unit in 2019 and 2020. The reagent result for VDRL was used as an indicator of syphilis. Odds Ratio and chi-square tests were used to evaluate the association of information from pregnant women with syphilis. Results: The overall prevalence of syphilis was 5.2 % (32/611; 95 % CI: 3.5-7.0 %). Age under 23 years was identified as a risk factor for syphilis. Conclusions: The prevalence of syphilis among pregnant women in the outskirts of Belém is high, especially among younger women. There is an urgent need to intensify innovative sexual and reproductive health education initiatives and emphasize the importance of consistent practice of preventive measures against syphilis and other STIs in the Amazon region, especially in the young population.

Abstract:Abstract Background Syphilis and congenital syphilis rates have increased sharply in Colorado in the past 5 years. Congenital syphilis is passed during pregnancy in utero and can cause lifelong physical, developmental, and neurologic problems for the child, or can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, or early infant death. Congenital syphilis is easily prevented if the mother receives timely testing, treatment, and prenatal care. Providers can play a key role in preventing congenital syphilis for women with social vulnerabilities, who have a higher likelihood of syphilis and/or congenital syphilis infection. Methods We surveyed 23 and interviewed 4 health care providers in southern Colorado in 2022 to record their experiences in providing sexual health care services. We asked providers with direct care experience about perceived barriers in effectively treating syphilis. Results The most significant barriers reported in the survey were the cost of treatment (26%) and the loss to follow-up (22%). Interviews revealed further challenges, including discretionary testing procedures, delays in screening results, treatment referral issues, and stigma around substance use and sexual activity. Conclusions Elevated syphilis and congenital syphilis rates pose significant public health challenges. Coordinated interventions are necessary to effectively reduce the transmission of syphilis and congenital syphilis among women with upstream barriers. Potential care solutions include expanding rapid, point-of care testing and treatment options, supporting bicillin delivery or web-based inventory systems, offering anti-stigma training for providers, offering mental and behavioral health resources at providers’ clinics, and expanding partnerships with syringe access programs.

Abstract:Apart from HIV acquisition, men who have sex with men are at a higher risk of sexually transmitted infections, especially syphilis. Although the intersection between syphilis and HIV poses a formidable challenge among key populations who are known to be vulnerable to many health threats, there is little known about syphilis infection among MSM living with HIV in Ghana. This study seeks to investigate the burden of syphilis and address the existing knowledge gap by exploring behavioral, healthcare access, and structural factors influencing the syphilis burden within the HIV-positive MSM population. This study was conducted in 2023 as part of the bio-behavioral survey (BBS) among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Ghana. A cross-sectional survey that used a respondent-driven sampling (RDS) approach was conducted in the old ten regions of Ghana. Data was collected on 3,420 participants, however, 857 HIV-positive MSM were included in this study since it focused on syphilis among HIV-positive MSM in Ghana. The study estimated the prevalence of syphilis among MSM living with HIV and provided a 95% confidence interval across different categories of explanatory variables. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify factors associated with overall syphilis prevalence. All other analyses were weighted due to the complex design of the study. The overall prevalence of syphilis was 23.83% (95% CI: 20.44, 27.58). HIV-positive men who only had sex with men had a 29.77% (95% CI: 23.90, 36.40) prevalence of syphilis compared to a prevalence of 9.50% (95% CI: 2.56, 29.53) recorded by HIV-positive MSM who were attracted to mostly females. Participants who ever had receptive anal sex recorded a higher prevalence 26.79% (95% CI: 22.78, 31.23) than those who never had receptive anal sex 12.86% (95% CI: 8.02, 19.99). The odds of syphilis among HIV-positive MSM who never used condoms with regular sex partners in the last 6 months were 41.08 (aOR: 41.08 at 95% CI 1.24–136.42; p = 0.038). There is a high prevalence of syphilis among HIV-positive men who have sex with men in Ghana, especially among those who engage in unprotected anal sex and have multiple sexual partners. Our findings underscore the dire need for targeted interventions to address the dual brunt of HIV and syphilis among the MSM population in Ghana.

Abstract:The stigma and social discrimination against cisgender women sex workers lead many of them to live in conditions characterized by social inequality, marginalization, persecution, and limited opportunities for sexual health literacy. Consequently, they are often compelled to establish a framework of preventive beliefs with little scientific validity, which they use to identify, mitigate, or avoid sexual health risks arising from their interactions with clients. This study investigates the sexual health beliefs that influence self-care practices aimed at preventing sexually transmitted infections among cisgender women sex workers in Colombia. We conducted a qualitative study framed in Hermeneutic Phenomenology. In-depth interviews and discussion groups were conducted with 34 cisgender women sex workers over 18 years of age in the center of the cities of Bogotá and Barranquilla in Colombia. Seven themes emerged from the reflective and inductive thematic analysis of the narratives: (1) popular habits for the prevention of contagion, (2) ocular assessment of genitals, (3) condom lubrication, (4) suspicion of a hidden infection in the client, (5) saliva and oral contact as a source of contagion, (6) avoidance of semen contact, (7) and trust in God as protection. The findings reflect the need for health and social professionals to promote participatory and inclusive cooperation with sex workers to update the framework of preventive beliefs that help them guide sexual health self-care with autonomy and self-efficacy, strengthening favorable beliefs and negotiating unfavorable ones. It is also essential to have a sex worker-informed sexual health policy that guides the promotion of sexual health that is sensitive to the needs and consistent with the risks of sex work and ensures friendly and non-oppressive preventive care environments for sex workers.

Abstract:Background: Antiretroviral therapy (ART) has been shown to reduce human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) viral replication and ultimately achieve viral suppression and eliminate HIV transmission. However, little is known about the impact of viral suppression on high-risk behaviors and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Objective: This study aimed to assess the rates of current syphilis infection in virally suppressed people living with HIV (PLWH) and whether with the duration of ART can reduce the current syphilis infection in eastern China. Method: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of PLWH in Zhejiang Province, China, in 2022. PLWH who were on ART >6 months and were virally suppressed (viral load <50 copies/mL) were included in the study. Data were collected from the National Epidemiological Database of Zhejiang Province and all participants were tested for viral load and current syphilis. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify risk factors associated with current syphilis infection. Result: A total of 30,744 participants were included in the analysis. 82.7% of participants were male, the mean age was 44.9 +/- 14.1 years, 84.9% had received ART in a hospital setting, the mean time on ART was 5.9 +/- 3.1 years and 5.6% of participants were infected with current syphilis. Multivariable logistic regression showed that being male [adjusted odds ratio (aOR): 2.12, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.69-2.66], high level of education (aOR: 1.23, 95% CI: 1.02-1.49), homosexual route of HIV infection (aOR: 1.80, 95% CI: 1.60-2.04), non-local registered residence (aOR: 1.29, 95% CI: 1.11-1.51), had history of STIs before HIV diagnosis (aOR: 1.95, 95 % CI: 1.75-2.18) and treatment provided by a municipal hospital (aOR: 2.16, 95% CI: 1.31-3.55) were associated with increased risk of current syphilis infection. Being married (aOR: 0.67, 95% CI: 0.58-0.76) was associated with a decreased risk of current syphilis infection. Conclusion: Our findings revealed a high rate of current syphilis infection among virally suppressed PLWH in eastern China. Duration of ART did not reduce the prevalence of current syphilis infection. Targeted interventions to reduce current syphilis infection should be prioritized for subgroups at higher risk.

Abstract:Introduction: There is insufficient evidence supporting the use of rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) for syphilis in people living with HIV (PLWH). We evaluated the diagnostic performance of two commercially available RDTs (Bioline and Determine) in PLWH in Cali, Colombia. Both RDTs were performed on capillary blood (CB), obtained by finger prick, and sera, by venipuncture. A combination of treponemal enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and Treponema pallidum haemagglutination assay (TPHA) on serum samples was the reference standard. Rapid plasma reagin (RPR) and clinical criteria were added to define active syphilis. Sensitivity and specificity, predictive values and likelihood ratios (LR) of RDTs were estimated with their corresponding 95% confidence interval (95% CI). Stratified analyses by sample type, patient characteristics, non-treponemal titers, operator and re-training were performed. Results: 244 PLWH were enrolled, of whom 112 (46%) had positive treponemal reference tests and 26/234 (11.1%) had active syphilis. The sensitivities of Bioline on CB and sera were similar (96.4% vs 94.6%, p = 0.6). In contrast, Determine had a lower sensitivity on CB than sera (87.5% vs 99.1%, p<0.001). Sensitivities were lower in PLWH not receiving ART (Bioline 87.1% and Determine 64.5%, p<0.001) and for one of the operators (Bioline 85% and Determine 60%, p<0.001). Specificities of the RDTs were > 95% in most analyses. Predictive values were 90% or higher. For active syphilis, the RDTs showed a similar performance pattern but with decreased specificities. Conclusion: The studied RDTs have an excellent performance in PLWH to screen for syphilis and potentially for active syphilis, yet Determine performs better on sera than CB. Patient characteristics and potential difficulties operators may face in acquiring enough blood volume from finger pricks should be considered for the implementation and the interpretation of RDTs.
Syphilis Among U.S.-Bound Refugees, 2015 − 2018

Abstract:We assessed syphilis screening data from overseas medical examinations among U.S.-bound refugees to characterize seropositive syphilis cases and treatment from January 1, 2015, to December 31, 2018. During this time period, all refugees 15 years and older were required to undergo syphilis screening prior to resettlement to the United States. Of the 160,381 refugee arrivals who had a syphilis screening performed, 697 (434 per 100,000) were diagnosed with any stage (infectious or non-infectious) of syphilis. Among the 697 persons with seropositive syphilis, a majority (63%) were from the Africa region and were male (58%), and 53 (7.6%) were diagnosed with an infectious stage of syphilis. All infectious cases were treated prior to resettlement. This information suggests a comparable risk of infection among U.S.-bound refugees compared to a report of syphilis among U.S.-bound refugees from 2009 to 2013, indicating low rates in this population for at least a decade.

Abstract:In this study, we aimed to assess the prevalence of syphilis among people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV; PWH) engaging in high-risk sexual behavior, determine the stage of syphilis, and evaluate treatment efficacy. A retrospective single-center cohort study was conducted at the AHEPA University General Hospital of Thessaloniki, focusing on PWH at high risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) attending outpatient care from January 2019 to December 2022. Sociodemographic and clinical data were collected, incident syphilis rates were identified, associations with HIV-related characteristics were explored, and the treatment response was assessed. Among 991 participants, 94 PWH were diagnosed with syphilis, representing 9.4% of the cohort. Incident syphilis cases experienced a decrease in the early COVID-19 era compared to 2019, followed by a gradual increase leading up to 2022. The majority of syphilis cases were asymptomatic latent syphilis (71.1%). Men who have sex with men (MSM) and younger individuals exhibited higher rates of co-infection during the study period. No significant association was found between incident syphilis and HIV-related factors. Most syphilis cases (86%) were treated with benzathine penicillin G (BPG). Treatment with BPG and doxycycline showed an increased success rate (96.7% vs. 92.9%), with no statistically significant difference observed between them (p = 0.438). This study highlights the alarming incidence of syphilis among PWH engaging in high-risk sexual behavior, particularly among younger MSM. BPG remains effective, and alternative regimens like doxycycline show promise, especially in settings with penicillin shortages or patient allergies.

Abstract:Syphilis is a chronic infectious disease with its prevalence being described since the 15th century. Although its etiological agent and also the treatment measures are widely known, syphilis is still a great public health problem worldwide, mainly in countries with limited resources associated to low investments in health primary care. The aim of the present study was to analyze the trend and regional distribution of syphilis in Brazil between 2007 and 2017. This is an ecological study using secondary data from the Brazilian notification system. The Ministry of Health selected 100 municipalities which presented the worse outcomes related to syphilis from the 5,570 Brazilian municipalities as a target for a comprehensive project in order to tackle the prevalence of syphilis, called the "No Syphilis Project". These priority municipalities represent 57.7% of syphilis cases and about one third of the Brazilian population. They were compared with other 189 non-priority municipalities with more than 100 thousand inhabitants among the Brazilian regions (North, Northeast, Southeast, South and Center-West). Polynomial regression methods and Joinpoint analyses were used to analyze the trend, from which the Annual Average Percent Change (AACP) for each time period was calculated. There was a significant growth trend in all regions for the main three forms of syphilis (in pregnancy, congenital and acquired), especially in the South. The ratio between syphilis in pregnancy and congenital syphilis increased in both priority (AAPC: 8.54%; p<0.001) and non-priority municipalities (AAPC: 2.61%; p = 0.005), as well as in the regions, except the Center-West. High growth trends in syphilis prevalence were found in all municipalities, as well as all five regions between 2007 and 2017, showing that the challenge to reduce or even eliminate syphilis in Brazil is still difficult.

The Migration Risk Environment: Challenges to Human Security for Venezuelan Migrant and Refugee Women and Girls Pre- and Post-Migration to Colombia

Abstract:The Venezuelan crisis has unleashed multiple forms of sociopolitical violence against its population and created a context of unmet needs, insecurity, and human rights violations. Outward migration caused by this situation has been linked to health emergencies in neighboring countries. Venezuelan migrant and refugee women and girls (VMRWG) are among the most affected. We conducted a cross-sectional qualitative and Participatory Action Research (PAR) project to characterize the risk environments for VMRWG across migration phases, analyzing pre-departure, transit, border crossing, and resettlement risk factors for health and security through semi-structured interviews ( n = 30) and human cartographies ( n = 16). We found cross border risk and protective factors that inform cross-border health initiatives, migration policies, and human rights efforts for both the migrant and host communities. Findings and Recommendations Migratory trajectories of VMRWG from Venezuela to Colombia represent a risk environment for women and girls, connecting cross-border contexts through armed actors’ control, culturally reinforced gender roles and limited social and economic resources. Long-term sustainable migratory policies that are culturally sensitive and include a gender-approach to health should operationalize how gender roles are intimately connected to HIV risk and mental health disparities through reinforced structural factors. Such policies must address these structural factors. The public health system needs to incorporate and align with programmatic efforts implemented by international platforms (United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), AID4AIDS, and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) also known as Doctors Without Borders) targeting screening for infectious diseases (including HIV and mental health disparities) in border crossings and borderlands. Sustainable policies to bridge gaps between services and populations and to decrease growing HIV cases depends on these strategies. Policies and programs of local governments (city and municipality level) addressing mental health disparities need to be expanded through peer leaders and civil society networks of care to guarantee wellbeing and quality of life after resettlement. International efforts and collaborations should capitalize on the re-opening of the border to establish inter-sectoral collaborations with Venezuelan NGOs and civil society organizations on both sides of the border to address gender-based violence, follow-up of cases, and access to services in sending and receiving communities. In order to broach gaps and tackle access barriers in resettlement communities in Colombia, services must be provided in peripheric territories and neighborhoods where some vulnerable migrants resettle. These services must rely on health sector-community collaborations. Public health sector efforts should be integrated and coordinated with family and child services on a local and national level Instituto Colombiano de Bienestar Familiar (ICBF), gender working groups, shelters, and citywide supported initiatives like the House of Women) to provide and promote access to social resources (education, jobs, and housing) for migrant women. Health promotion strategies are necessary to decrease infectious diseases and violence-related trauma among migrants across borders. These strategies can include outreach through peer leaders, civil society organization campaigns, and HIV mobile testing and counselling. These services should be delivered in a culturally sensitive manner, capitalizing on in-place cross-border networks of support. In Colombia, sustainable efforts in policy and programs have been made to provide Venezuelans with access to health care and social services with the help of inter-sectoral working groups, national laws, and border commissions. However, there is an urgent need to expand the humanitarian response and the health sector coverage to gender-based violence impacting infectious disease risk and mental health trauma in host communities. Connecting pre- and post-migration contexts in South-to-South migration is paramount. Tackling these issues can improve the protection of human rights and resettlement conditions in host communities.

Abstract:Azimuthal surface waves are eigen-electromagnetic waves which propagate in coaxial plasma-vacuum waveguides across an axial stationary magnetic field. Their excitation in the coaxial plasma layer by the flow of electrons which rotate along large Larmor orbits either around or inside the plasma layer has been well studied in the collision-less approach. The influence of weak collisions between the plasma particles on the growth rate of such waves for both cases of the electron beam placement is studied here for the frequency range above the upper-hybrid frequency and compared to the case of the electron cyclotron frequency range. Transition from the regime of beam-plasma instability to that of a beam-dissipative instability is discussed.
