Abstract:The dune ecosystem plays a significant role in the global carbon cycle. The Horqin Sandy Land is a typical semi-arid fragile ecosystem in northern China. Understanding the magnitudes and dynamics of carbon dioxide fluxes within this region is essential for understanding the carbon balance. Used 6 years (2013-2018) measurements from an eddy-covariance system, we analyzed the dynamic patterns of net ecosystem carbon exchange (NEE), gross primary production (GPP), and ecosystem respiration (Reco) of the dune ecosystem in Horqin Sandy Land and examined their responses to climate factors with a focus on the precipitation. The results showed that the NEE of the dune ecosystem fluctuated from -166 to 100 gCO2·m-2·year-1 across the 6 growing seasons, with an average of -56 gCO2·m-2·year-1. The precipitation was not a key factor influencing the carbon flux variability. During the mid-growth stage, GPP was primarily affected by the effective precipitation frequency (R2 ranging from 0.65 to 0.85, P < 0.05), followed by fractional vegetation cover (R2 ranging from 0.65 to 0.68, P < 0.05). However, in the early and late growth stages, temperature predominantly drove the carbon flux (R2 = 0.75, P < 0.01). The interannual variability of carbon flux can be predominantly elucidated by phenological indicators such as CO2 uptake (CUstart), end of CO2 uptake (CUend), CO2 uptake period (CUP), and Spring lag. The results demonstrated the dune ecosystem is a weak carbon sink in semi-arid ecosystems. Furthermore, we emphasized the significance of effective precipitation frequency in regulating carbon fluxes. Our results provide a foundational understanding of the carbon balance in semi-arid ecosystems.
Understanding soil and ecosystem respiration in a dune-meadow cascade ecosystem

Abstract:Arid and semi-arid regions, which account for more than 30% of the Earth's land area, increasingly dominate the spatiotemporal trends in global carbon fluxes. The Horqin Sandy Land is a typical semi-arid fragile ecosystem in northern China. Understanding the components of the carbon budget in ecosystems under conditions of extreme soil moisture limitations provides a foundation for comprehending the carbon balance in semi-arid ecosystems. The seasonal and diurnal variations in soil respiration ( R s ) in semi-mobile dune (SD) and meadow wetland (MW) ecosystems of the Horqin Sandy Land were examined, and the sources of CO 2 emissions from R s were identified using stable carbon isotopes. The responses of R s and ecosystem respiration ( R eco ) to environmental temperature, moisture and leaf area index ( LAI ) were revealed. The results showed that on a seasonal scale, in SD with soil moisture content ( M s ) below field capacity (FC), M s had a greater influence on R s than soil temperature ( T s ) during the growing season. Changes in the LAI during the middle and late growth period affected R s by altering root carbon supply. In MW, the most favorable M s for R s was near FC. The increase in LAI before mowing could effectively promote root and soil microbial respiration, and the decomposition of litter driven by T s was the main form of R s at this time. After mowing, root respiration and soil microbial respiration were the main processes contributing to CO 2 emissions. On a daily scale, relative humidity ( RH ) dominated the R s variation under dry conditions, whereas in other conditions, the R s was adequately explained by temperature in SD and MW. The overall R eco was larger than R s , but occasionally R s was greater than R eco . The effects of temperature, moisture and LAI on R eco and R s varied with growing season. Adding factors, such as ecosystem type, vegetation growth, water, and heat, to the carbon cycle model can improve predictions of carbon emissions, and aid in further management decisions in arid and semi-arid areas.

Abstract:Sandy cropland ecosystems are major terrestrial ecosystems in semi-arid regions of northern China’s Horqin Sandy Land, where they play an important role in the regional carbon balance. Continuous observation of the CO2 flux was conducted from 2014 to 2018 using the eddy covariance technique in a sandy maize cropland ecosystem in the Horqin Sandy Land. We analyzed carbon fluxes (the net ecosystem exchange (NEE) of CO2, ecosystem respiration (Reco), and the gross primary productivity (GPP) and their responses to environmental factors at different temporal scales using Random Forest models and correlation analysis. We found that the sandy cropland was a carbon sink, with an annual mean NEE of –124.4 g C m−2 yr−1. However, after accounting for carbon exports and imports, the cropland became a net carbon source, with net biome production ranging from –501.1 to –266.7 g C m−2 yr−1. At a daily scale, the Random Forest algorithm revealed that photosynthetic photon flux density, soil temperature, and soil moisture were the main drivers for variation of GPP, Reco, and NEE at different integration periods. At a monthly scale, GPP and Reco increased with increasing leaf area index (LAI), so the maize ecosystem’s carbon sequestration capacity increased with increasing LAI. At an annual scale, water availability (precipitation and irrigation) played a dominant role in explaining inter-annual variability of GPP and Reco. Affected by climate (e.g., precipitation) and field management (e.g., cultivation, irrigation), carbon fluxes differed greatly between years in the maize system.

Abstract:The objectives of this study were to investigate the main drivers of ecosystem carbon dynamics in meadow grasslands in the Horqin Sand Lands,and to understand the relationship between net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE)and key meteorological factors in this region.We continuously measured (NEE)and environ-mental factors in meadow grasslands in the Horqin Sand Lands from October 2013 to September 2014 using the eddy covariance method.The results showed that the diurnal variation in NEE differed significantly among sea-sons,especially among vegetation growing seasons.The highest seasonal diurnal absorption rate of CO2 was in July,followed by August,September,June,and then May.The NEE was controlled by photosynthetically ac-tive radiation (PAR)and the leaf area index (LAI)during vegetation growing seasons.The relationship be-tween NEE and PAR was expressed by a rectangular hyperbolic function.The simulated apparent initial aver-age light-use efficiency was 0.0015 μmol CO2/μmol PAR,and the maximum photosynthetic rate (P max )was 0.65 μmol CO2/(m2 ·s).The NEE was influenced by LAI,which was expressed by piecewise functions.When the LAI was greater than 3.08,NEE-PAR showed a gradual saturation-type relationship.The higher the LAI,the stronger the response of net carbon exchange to the amount of PAR.A light saturation response occurred when 1.5<VPD<2 kPa,and NEE was significantly inhibited under high VPD.The day-time net CO2 exchange was inhibited by heavy rainfall (cumulative rainfall>40 mm/day),while sustained low-intensity rain-fall (rainfall length>15 h)stimulated soil respiration at night.The night-time respiration rate of the ecosystem (R eco )increased exponentially as the soil temperature (T s )increased,and the temperature-sensitive coefficient Q10 was 2.63.

Abstract:Abstract. Grassland ecosystems are major components of the terrestrial ecosystems in arid and semiarid regions, and play important roles in the regional carbon dioxide (CO2) balance and cycle. Sandy grasslands are sensitive to climate change, yet the magnitudes, patterns, and environmental controls of their CO2 flows are poorly understood. Here, we report the results from continuous year-round CO2 observations in 5 years from a sandy grassland in the Horqin Sandy Land. The result showed that the sandy grassland was a CO2 source at annual scale (with mean annual net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE) of 48.88 ± 8.10 g C m−2 yr−1 in completely year 2015, 2016 and 2018), the total precipitation was the most important factor for NEE. At the seasonal scale, the sandy grassland showed a CO2 absorption during the summer, and in the rest of the seasons, it were all expressed as CO2 release. The main environmental factor of NEE were temperature and soil water content (SWC) in spring, radiation in summer, soil heat flux (SHF) and temperature in autumn, and SWC and temperature in winter. At the diel scale, net radiation (Rn) was the most important factor of NEE in all seasons. The sandy grassland may have been a net annual CO2 source at annual scale because the study site is recovering from degradation, thus vegetation productivity is still relatively low. Therefore, the ecosystem has not yet transitioned to a CO2 sink and long-term observations will be necessary to reveal the true source or sink intensity and its response to environmental and biological factors.
Community carbon and water exchange responses to warming and precipitation enhancement in sandy grassland along a restoration gradient

Abstract:Temperature increasing and precipitation alteration are predicted to occur in arid and semiarid lands; however, the response mechanism of carbon and water exchange at community level is still unclear in semiarid sandy land. We investigated the responses of carbon and water exchanges to warming and precipitation enhancement along a sand dune restoration gradient: mobile sand dunes (MD), semifixed sand dunes (SFD), and fixed sand dunes (FD). The average net ecosystem productivity (NEP) and evapotranspiration (ET) between May and August increased by 98% and 59%, respectively, from MD to SFD, while they had no significant differences between FD and the other two habitats. Warming inhibited ecosystem NEP, ET, and water use efficiency (WUE) by 69%, 49% (p < .001), and 80%, respectively, in SFD, while it nearly had no significant effects in MD and FD. However, precipitation addition by 30% nearly had no significant effects on community NEP, ET, and WUE, except for warming treatment in FD. In general, precipitation addition of 30% may still not be enough to prevent drought stress for growth of plants, due to with low water holding capacity and high evaporation rates in sandy land. Temperature increase magnified drought stress as it increased evapotranspiration rates especially in summer. In addition, community NEP, ET, and WUE were usually influenced by interactions between habitats and temperature, as well as the interactions among habitats, temperature, and precipitation. Species differences in each habitat along the restoration gradient may alter climate sensitivity of sandy land. These results will support in understanding and the prediction of the impacts of warming and precipitation change in semiarid sandy grassland.

Abstract:Different types of dunes cause habitat differences, which can affect vegetation growth. In turn, water utilized by vegetation leads to the differential distribution of soil moisture in different dunes. However, vegetation–soil dynamics in the alpine desert of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau remain poorly understood. We chose the largest section of desert along the eastern shore of Qinghai Lake as a study area to test the hypotheses that plant community characteristics and soil physicochemical properties show differences in different sand-binding communities, in addition to soil moisture content, based on methods of field investigations and in situ observations. The main results were as follows:1) Plant community species diversity and herb coverage increased with the stabilization status of dunes; meanwhile, coverage increased with the age of the added artificial semi-fixed dunes. 2) Surface deposits were mainly composed of medium sand, leading to low organic matter and nutrient content in the study area; this being different from other deserts in northern China. 3) Soil moisture's seasonal variation was consistent with rainfall seasonality and lacked significant interannual differences, while its vertical distribution was influenced by precipitation infiltration. 4) Soil crust forms beneath specific species, such as leguminous plants in the study area, which should be effective at preventing wind erosion. Our findings will facilitate a mechanistic understanding of plant–soil–water relationships in alpine deserts and provide timely information for screening introduced species for enhancing sand-fixation effectiveness.

Abstract:As one of the important pathways of material and energy flow between plant and soil system, litterfall plays a key role in the process of vegetation and soil restoration in ecologically fragile region. To explore the inter- and intra-annual dynamics of litter production and related regulatory factors at different habitats in sandy land ecosystem, we investigated the litter production during nine continuous growing seasons, while the air temperature and precipitation were measured over mobile dune, fixed dune, and grassland in Horqin Sandy Land. The results showed that annual litter production at different habitants were in the order of mobile dune (9.01 g·m-2) ＜ fixed dune (67.46 g·m-2) ＜ grassland (119.55 g·m-2). The inter-annual dynamics of litterfall fluctuated significantly, with a double-peak curve in fixed dune and "W" curve in grassland. The intra-annual variation of litterfall exhibited a "U" curve at all the three habitats, with peaks appearing in April and September, respectively. Precipitation and temperature had significant effects on the intra-annul dynamics of litterfall production in fixed sand dune and grassland, but had no significant effect on the inter-annual dynamics of litter production at three habitats. Temperature was the major factor affecting the dynamics of the litter fall during the growing season in Horqin Sandy Land.

Abstract:Shrub-dominated ecosystems in the semiarid Horqin Sandy Land are important terrestrial ecosystems, and substantially affect global ecological health and security. However, there have been few studies of climate change's effects on the carbon fluxes (NEE, net ecosystem exchange; R eco , ecosystem respiration; GPP, gross primary productivity) when these ecosystems are recovering from degradation. We used the eddy covariance technique to determine carbon fluxes and climatic conditions in this ecosystem from 2017 to 2021. The semi-fixed sandy land functioned as a carbon sink in wet years (NEE equaled −14.14 and −126.14 g C m –2 yr –1 in 2019 and 2021, respectively), but was a carbon source in dry years (NEE equaled 48.50 and 51.17 g C m –2 yr –1 in 2017 and 2020, respectively) and a normal year (NEE equaled 74.66 g C m –2 yr –1 in 2018). As expected in these usually water-limited ecosystems, water availability (precipitation and soil water content) were the dominant drivers of NEE, R eco , and GPP, but temperature and photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) also played important roles in regulating NEE, R eco and GPP in this recovering semi-fixed sandy ecosystem. With future precipitation and temperature increases, and continuing vegetation restoration, carbon sequestration by this ecosystem is expected to increase. Long-term observations will be necessary to reveal the true source and sink intensities and their response to environmental factors.

Abstract:This paper presents the environmental history and its responses to palaeoclimatic changes since the start of the Holocene in the eastern portion of the desert belt (sand seas and sandy lands) in northern China by comparing the aeolian sandpalaeosol sequences and their palaeoclimatic proxies. The optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages of the aeolian sandpalaeosol sedimentary sequences and a series of palaeoenvironmental proxies show that: (1) The large-scale dune landscape currently in the Kubuqi Sand Sea was formed during the Holocene in general; and the palaeosol was generally developed during the period of 4–2 ka, indicating conditions favorable for vegetation growth, soil development, and organic carbon accumulation due to increased precipitation or effective moisture and weakened aeolian activities; the large-scale expansion of dunes in the recent 2 ka is closely linked to human activities. The variable discharge of the Yellow River with diversions for irrigation may have resulted in a more consistent supply of aeolian particles for dune field expansion. (2) The dune landscape of the Hunshandake Sandy Land was likely formed around 12 ka, and before this, the western part of the Hunshandake Sandy Land would have been covered by a single large lake; it was obviously wetter than today in the sandy land during the period of 9.6–3 ka and the palaeosols were developed at the same time. But the aeolian activities have not been completely dormant in this long-lasting wetter epoch; because the Holocene wetter period was likely time-transgressive across the region. (3) The palaeosol of the Hulunbuir Sandy Land began to develop as early as 14.5 ka, probably continuing until the last 2 ka. The palaeosol development of various dune fields in the eastern portion of the desert belt (sand seas and sandy lands) in northern China is spatially heterogeneous, and even the palaeosol development time in different locations within each sandy land is inconsistent. During the middle Holocene (especially the 7.5–3.5 ka), all the sandy lands were stabilized in general and the intensity of aeolian activities was significantly weakened. The number of palaeoenvironmental records in the eastern portion of the desert belt (sand seas and sandy lands) in northern China has increased rapidly in the past decade, but the amount of published data still does not match the vast extent of the dune fields. It does require much more in-depth palaeoenvironmental studies for a full understanding of the relationship between aeolian activities and climate change in northern China.
Biometeorological effects on carbon dioxide and water-use efficiency within a semiarid grassland in the Chinese Loess Plateau

Abstract:Semiarid grassland ecosystems play a crucial role in global carbon and water cycles. Considerable attention has been devoted to the effect of biometeorological parameters on ecosystem carbon exchanges in semiarid regions. However, a gap remains regarding carbon and water flux in the Chinese Loess Plateau. In this study, we describe 6 years (2007–2012) of eddy-covariance carbon fluxes (CO2) and water-use efficiency (WUE) over a semiarid grassland site and their biometeorological controls. Interannual CO2 flux variations were analyzed based on a correlation analysis with measured biometeorological factors. The annual net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE) was negative (mean net carbon sink) across the entire period, varying from −236.3 (2012) to − 114.2 g C m−2 year−1 (2011), with a mean value of − 168.9 g C m−2 year −1. The normalized differential vegetation index is the most highly correlated with gross primary production (GPP) and evapotranspiration (ET) across several timescales. The effective precipitation frequency is an important factor influencing CO2 fluxes on an annual timescale, and soil water content was the second most important factor affecting CO2 fluxes on a monthly timescale. On an annual timescale, the semiarid grassland ecosystem WUE increased with the soil drought stress index, with ET decreasing more than GPP as soil drought increased. The monthly mean WUE varied from 0.44 to 2.51 g C kg−1 H2O, and the monthly WUE plateaued in October. Summer drought-induced leaf senescence caused GPP reduction in weaker summer monsoon years, leading to a notable reduction in WUE. We found obvious transitional characteristics in the response of WUE to soil water stress. We also found a strong positive relationship between the annual NEE and the annual effective precipitation frequency at the study site.

Abstract:Vegetation degraded significantly in Horqin Sandy Land over the past three decades.Identifying the variability of the key ecohydrological processes (such as evapotranspiration and vegetation growth) that are closely related to desertification is prerequisite for a better control of desertification processes in the future.Based on an ecohydrological cellular automata model,the Water and Vegetation Interactions-based Eco-hydrological Model (WaVEM) was developed and employed to evaluate the effects of the precipitation and potential evapotranspiration changes on the actual evapotranspiration (Et) and leaf area index,and to analyze the responses of vegetation to the multi-year precipitation reduction.During 1964-2013,Et and annual maximum LAI (LAImax) had insignificant trends while precipitation changed insignificantly and potential evapotranspiration increased significantly.The precipitation change was the major factor causing the decreases of both Et and LAImax while the effect of potential evapotranspiration was the second.Multi-year precipitation reduction during 1999-2011 caused significant vegetation degradation in Horqin sandy land.A short-term drought could lead to a sudden decline in vegetation,however,vegetation recovered quickly after the drought.

Abstract:Ecological stoichiometry facilitates the understanding of biogeochemical cycles by studying the balance among multiple elements in ecosystems. However, the spatial patterns of soil stoichiometry and their responses to land use in desertified land are unclear. In this study, we selected 525 sample points to collect topsoil (0–20 cm) samples throughout China's Horqin Sandy Land and measured soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP). We then calculated stoichiometric ratios (C:N:P). SOC (8.7 g kg−1), TN (0.9 g kg−1), and TP (0.3 g kg−1) were lower in this region than in Chinese and global terrestrial ecosystems due to aeolian desertification. SOC, TN, C:P, and N:P were significantly (p 0.05) among grassland, woodland, and cropland because of the strong coupling relationship between SOC and TN. The values of SOC, TN, TP, C:P, and N:P in the Horqin Sandy Land were high in the north (dominated by mountain woodland and grassland) and were low in the south (dominated by desertified land). SOC, TN, and TP contents and C:N:P ratios were mainly affected by mean annual temperature (29.6%), land use (11.5%), and bulk density (11.4%) through their influence on soil microbial metabolism, litter and nutrient input, and soil structure, respectively. The results provide information on the overall changes in soil stoichiometry in the Horqin Sandy Land and its responses to land‐use changes, and can therefore guide ecological restoration in semiarid regions affected by desertification in the modern context of climate change.

Anti-Cancer Agents in Medicinal Chemistry

Abstract:Recent gene profiling studies have identified at least 5 major subtypes of breast cancer, including normal type, luminal A type, luminal B type, human epidermal growth factor receptor (HER)-2 positive type, and basal-like type. Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), showing no or low expressions of estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PgR), and HER2, considered important clinical biomarkers, accounts for 10% to 20% of all breast cancers. Hormonal therapy and molecular targeted therapy are not indicated for the management of TNBC, resulting in poor outcomes. Because TNBC lacks clear-cut therapeutic targets, effective treatment strategies remain to be established. However, TNBC is known to share similar biologic characteristics with basal-like type breast cancer and is often accompanied by loss of functional BRCA, a gene-modifying enzyme. Breast cancer with BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations is accompanied by activation of the enzyme poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP). PARP, a DNA base-excision repair enzyme, is known to play a central role in gene repair, along with BRCA. Because some breast cancers with BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations are TNBC, the suppression of PARP has attracted attention as a new treatment strategy for TNBC. In this article, we review the clinical characteristics of TNBC, discuss problems in treatment, and briefly summarize the international development status of PARP inhibitors.
Precipitation drives the accumulation of soil organic carbon in the sandy desert of the Junggar Basin, Northwest China

Abstract:Accurate quantitative estimation of soil organic carbon (SOC) and its storage is crucial for ecosystem response over desert areas, and is an important component of understanding dryland climate change, which can effectively reflect the processes and regulatory mechanisms in the carbon cycle. Nevertheless, the relationship between carbon sources and carbon sinks in sandy soils is a hotly debated subject. In particular, how plants and environmental conditions interact to affect SOC remains unclear in sandy deserts. Here, we investigated 77 sites at depths of 0–100 cm (soil depth was divided by 0–5 cm, 5–10 cm, 10–20 cm,20–30 cm, 30–50 cm, 50–70 cm and 70–100 cm intervals), collected 1617 soil samples, and obtained the climatic conditions, vegetation types, and edaphic factors associated with the sampling sites. This study aims to determine whether there are divisions in the allocation strategies of SOC by various vegetation types, and to analyze the mechanisms of environmental factors on the soil carbon pool in sandy deserts. Our results found that (1) the mean value of SOC in the sandy desert was 2.19 g·kg−1, which differed significantly among different vegetation types (P < 0.05), yet there were no significant changes in aboveground biomass and litter biomass. (2) SOC did not significantly differ among soil layers except for the Ceratoides latent (P = 0.04), and Seriphidium terrae-albae (P = 0.02) communities. (3) The mean value of soil organic carbon density (SOCD) was 3.38 kg·m−2 and increased exponentially with soil depth (R2 = 0.23, P < 0.05). (4) Mean annual precipitation controlled the spatial distribution of SOC variation in sandy desert. Vegetation types, soil variables, topographic factors did not control SOC, but had a strong interactive effect with climatic factors. The explanatory power of interaction effects often showed an improvement over single variables, manifested as nonlinear enhancement and bivariate enhancement. Our results highlighted the nature of the desert’s position in the global carbon cycle and provide key information on missing carbon sinks in the driest zone.

Analysis of Soil Respiration and Influencing Factors in a Semiarid Dune-Meadow Cascade Ecosystem

Abstract:The characteristics of soil respiration (R-s) in semiarid regions are important with regard to the carbon cycle of complex underlying surfaces and estimation of carbon emissions from regional ecosystems. During the growing season (May-September 2016), in situ observations of R-s were obtained concurrently with measurements of soil bacteria (B-s), soil moisture (M-s), and soil temperature (T-s) at depths of 0-10 cm, in a dune-meadow cascade ecosystem. Results showed that R-s differences among the various ecosystems were significant (P < 0.01), the intensity of R-s in meadows was twice stronger than that in dunes. The average values of R-s presenting a declined trend follows MPA (11.19 mu mol m(-2) s(-1)) > MAF (7.75) > SSG (6.78) > SMAH (5.02) > SFAH (4.8) > FLC (4.28) > SBG (3.09). An extremely significant (p < 0.01) positive correlated power relationship can be found between R-s and B-s, which could explain 62.41%-86.56% of the variation in R-s in the various ecosystems. Field capacity and the saturated water content were the key demarcation points for the interactive relationship between R-s and M-s, which showing a significant (P < 0.05) positive correlated power relationship in dunes, in contrast, it presenting a significant (P < 0.05) negative correlated exponential relationship in meadows. R-s was positively exponentially correlated with T-s, significant (P < 0.05) in meadows and nonsignificant (P > 0.05) in dunes. Future research should be strengthened to consider multiple growing seasons experiencing various climatic conditions for accurate estimation of terrestrial carbon emissions in arid and semiarid ecosystems. Abstract:Understanding the dynamics of carbon and water vapor fluxes in arid inland river basin ecosystems is essential for predicting and assessing the regional carbon-water budget amid climate change. However, studies aiming to unravel the mechanisms driving the variations and coupling process of regional carbon-water budget in a changing environment in arid regions are limited. Here, we used the eddy covariance technique to analyze the relationship between CO 2 and H 2 O fluxes in three typical ecosystems across the upper, middle, and lower reaches of an arid inland river basin in Northwestern China. Our results showed that all ecosystems acted as carbon sinks, with the alpine swamp meadow, cropland, and desert shrubland sequestrating −300.2 ± 0.01, −644.8 ± 2.9, and − 203.7 ± 22.5 g C m −2 yr −1 , respectively. Air temperature ( T a ) primarily controlled daily gross primary productivity ( GPP ) and net ecosystem CO 2 exchange ( NEE ) in the irrigated cropland during the growing season, while soil temperature ( T s ) and vapor pressure deficit ( VPD ) regulated these parameters in the alpine swamp meadow and desert shrubland. Additionally, T a and net radiation ( R n ) controlled daily evapotranspiration ( ET ) in cropland, while T s and R n regulated ET at other sites. Consequently, carbon and water vapor fluxes of all three ecosystems tended to be energy-limited during the growing season. The differential responses of carbon and water vapor fluxes in the upper, middle, and lower reaches of these ecosystems to biophysical factors determined their distinct coupling and variations in water use efficiency. Notably, the desert shrub ecosystem in the lower reach of the basin maintained a stable balance between carbon gain and water loss, indicating adaptation to aridity. This study provides valuable insights into the underlying mechanisms behind the changes in carbon and water vapor fluxes and water-use efficiency in arid river basin ecosystems.

Abstract:Hourly mean dust concentration observations and meteorological measurements obtained from a sandstorm monitoring station in Horqin Sandy Land area in China from December 2010 to November 2011 were used to investigate the seasonal variations in dust concentration and dust emission flux as well as their relationship with meteorological parameters and soil condition. Based on 14 local dust emission events in spring 2011, the friction velocity (u.) and free convective velocity (w.) were calculated, and their correlation with dust emission flux was used to evaluate the dynamic and thermal impact on dust emission by turbulence. Results indicated that dust events occur in every season with peak dust activity in spring. The maximum dust concentration is 1654.1 mu g m(-3) and dust emission flux is 98.4 mu g m(-2) s(-1). Freezing of soil in winter effectively decreases soil erodibility and suppresses dust emission. However, soil moisture does not show a significant impact on dust emission in this semi-arid Horqin Sandy Land area. Both friction velocity and free convective velocity could reflect the trend in dust emission flux, but both with obvious underestimation. The thermal impact on dust emission by turbulence is found to be far less than its dynamic impact. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Seasonal variation of carbon exchange from a revegetation area in a Chinese desert

Abstract:Revegetation is a common method to combat desertification and to reduce soil carbon loss in arid and semi-arid areas worldwide. Revegetated areas in the temperate arid Shapotou area of Northern China were established to stabilize sand dunes in an area subject to wind erosion. The objective of this study was to characterize the carbon flux of a 20-year old revegetated area. During the measurement period from May 2008 to December 2010 carbon flux was measured by the eddy covariance technique, and rainfall, temperature, and soil water content were monitored simultaneously with the aim of understanding the relationship between carbon flux and meteorological factors. We found that the revegetated ecosystem is a carbon sink during the growing season when most of the annual precipitation falls. The revegetated area changed from being a carbon source to a sink in the 1 or 2 days following an effective rainfall event. In the non-growing season the ecosystem was a carbon source. The soil water content (SWC) affected the relationship between ecosystem respiration and temperature. The nighttime respiration rate increased with soil temperature. When the SWC was >= 3% the correlation between respiration rate and soil temperature was stronger (R-2 = 0.23) than when SWC was <3% (R-2 = 0.08). Although the net ecosystem carbon flux (NEE) in temperate arid desert areas is relatively small compared to that of humid areas, it represents huge carbon fixation potential because of the very large area of desert in northern China. Further research is required to clarify the effects of climatic factors on the various components of temperate arid ecosystems, especially the roles of cryptogam and biological soil crusts in the carbon exchange processes.
