Abstract:Biodegradable colloidosomes have attracted increasing attention for their applications to enhance the efficacy and reduce wastage of pesticides in agriculture. In this study, we present a continuous and highly efficient method for production of starch colloidosomes. The starch particles with an average particle size of 230.2 nm and good dispersibility were prepared using surface modification technology, and then used as environment-friendly shell materials to form self-assembled starch colloidosomes using spray drying technology. The influences of inlet temperature, feed rate and air flow rate on the morphologies of colloidosomes were also studied. This strategy enables the construction of starch colloidosomes with uniform spherical morphology and controllable pore sizes under different pH, and can be used for pesticide encapsulation. After loading pyraclostrobin (PYR), the regular spherical colloidosomes not only achieve a small mean diameter of 2.35 μm, but also realize a high encapsulation efficiency of 82 %. The release performance of PYR has an obvious pH response and follows the segmented Ritger-Pepapes model of sustained-release. The colloidosomes were used to prevent the photodegradation of pesticides. The PYR loaded colloidosomes exhibit excellent UV resistance with a retention rate of 72.7 %. In addition, the loading of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles and the embedding of carbon dots were also explored.

Abstract:We report an unprecedented assembling performance of amide-containing, homo-structured poly(N-alkylacrylamide)s, through which they can assemble into discrete spherical particles with size ranging from tens of nanometres to several micrometres. For a specific polymer, a facile control over topology and scale of assembled structures can be accomplished via solvent conditions. Assembling using appropriate solvent gives rise to capsule-like assemblies. The molecular structure of polymers, such as the side chain chemistry and topology display striking impact on the size and morphology of resulting assemblies. These polymers might function as novel model systems for investigating complex functions performed by amide moieties in proteins, while this assembling offers a simple, facile but powerful and cost-effective manufacturing route for nano- or microstructured materials that may find great potential in diverse applications varying from cosmetics, drug delivery, nanomedicine, to biotechnology.

Abstract:Novel "micelles enhanced" polyelectrolyte (PE) capsules based on functional templates of hybrid calcium carbonate were fabricated. Evidences suggested that the structure of capsule wall was different from that of conventional PE capsules, and the wall permeability of these PE capsules changed significantly. Lysozyme, a positively charged protein in neutral solution, was studied as a model protein to be encapsulated into the "micelles enhanced" PE capsules. Confocal laser scanning microscope was used to observe the entrapping process in real time, while UV-Vis spectroscope and scanning force microscope measurements suggested the high efficiency of encapsulation. In addition, the fluorescence recovery after photobleaching technique was employed to determine the existence form of deposited molecules. Further studies showed even negatively charged water-soluble peptides or proteins can be encapsulated into these hybrid capsules by modulating the pH value in bulk solution under its isoelectronic point as well.
Three-Fluid Nozzle Spray Drying Strategy for Efficient Fabrication of Functional Colloidosomes

Abstract:Colloidosomes as Pickering emulsion microcapsules are expected to serve various applications, including encapsulation of drugs and loading of functional materials. Normally, when using colloidosomes for drug encapsulation, the latex particles as shell materials need to be mixed with drugs before the assembly process. However, this procedure may cause aggregation of latex particles, thereby resulting in disordered assembled shells or a low loading efficiency. Herein, we propose a three-fluid nozzle spray drying process to efficiently assemble latex particles of P(styrene (St)-co-butyl acrylate (BA)) into colloidosomes. The three-fluid nozzle spray drying equipment allows for the preparation for drug encapsulation without advance mixing of drug and shell materials. This strategy enables the construction of colloidosomes with uniform and controllable pores and the loading of functional materials. The effects of the compressed air flow rate, inlet temperature, feed rate, and solid content were explored, revealing the formation mechanism of colloidosomes during the spray drying process. Doxycycline hydrochloride (DH) was encapsulated in colloidosomes for controllable release, and the sustained release time is up to 100 h. The release rate can be adjusted by varying the glass transition temperature (Tg) and size of latex particles. Furthermore, Fe3O4 nanoparticle (NP)-loaded colloidosomes were constructed by this strategy. The magnetic response intensity of colloidosomes can be modulated by varying the amount of Fe3O4 NPs. The anticancer drug encapsulation and loading of other functional particles were also explored to expand applications.

Abstract:“Micelle-enhanced” polyelectrolyte capsules were fabricated via a layer-by-layer technique, templated on hybrid calcium carbonate particles with built-in polymeric micelles based on polystyrene-b-poly(acrylic acid). Due to the presence of a large number of negatively charged micelles inside the polyelectrolyte capsule, which were liberated from templates, the capsule wall was reconstructed and had properties different to those of conventional polyelectrolyte capsules. This type of capsule could selectively entrap positively charged water-soluble substances. The encapsulation efficiency of positively charged substances was dependent on their molecular weight or size. For some positively charged compounds, such as rhodamine B and lysozyme, the concentration in the capsules was orders of magnitude higher than that in the incubation solution. In addition, in vitro release study suggested that the encapsulated compounds could be released through a sustained manner to a certain degree. All these results point to the fact that these capsules might be used as novel delivery systems for some water-soluble compounds.

Abstract:A novel enzyme responsive amphiphilic copolymer was synthesized. The copolymer was composed of hydrophobic polylactide (PLA) and hydrophilic alpha-methoxy-poly(ethyl glycol) (MPEG) block. The two blocks were conjugated through 5,5'-azodisalylic acid (OLZ) (MPEG-OLZ-b-PLA). The chemical structure of the copolymer was verified by FTIR,NMR and GPC. The NMR characterization demonstrated that the copolymers could be synthesized by esterification and purified by precipitation and dialysis. The micellization behavior of the copolymer in aqueous media was studied with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The results showed that MPEG-OLZ-b-PLA self-assembled into spherical micelles with diameter at about 30 nm. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the copolymer was 2.69 x 10(-3) g/L. The enzyme-degradation experiment demonstrated that the MPEG-OLZ-b-PLA micelles could be specifically degraded in rat cecum contents. And the degradation curve had two time platform with no change in azo content. The first platform phase resulted from the induction period of the enzyme so that desirable concentration of the enzyme could be achieved for initialing the degradation of the copolymers. The second could be attributed to the slow dynamic process for azoreductase to migrate into the micelles. Such degradation behavior of the copolymers suggested of potential usefulness to colon-site specific delivery.

Abstract:The low utilization efficiency of pesticides poses a significant challenge to the sustainable development of agriculture. The nanocapsule-based pesticide delivery systems combine the advantages of nanotechnology and advanced materials to achieve on-demand and accurately targeted release. Herein, a facile and universal strategy was used to fabricate photosensitive pesticide nanocapsules using a versatile imine polymer derived from cinnamaldehyde (CIN) and ε-poly-L-lysine (PLL). Characterization results demonstrated that the nanocapsules prepared under optimal conditions exhibited uniform sizes (200–400 nm) and high encapsulation efficiency (>90 %). Photodegradation experiments revealed a significant increase of half-lives (7.21–55.57 times) under UV irradiation for the different pesticide nanocapsules. Furthermore, the pesticide nanocapsules demonstrated a high biological activity and excellent physicochemical properties, including pH-responsive release, maximum retention, and rain erosion resistance. The results of the mechanistic studies on the increased biological activity indicated that the nanocapsules could be adsorbed on the surface of target pathogenic cells and then released CIN and PLL, destroying the integrity of the cell membrane, and synergistically and effectively eradicating the pathogen with pesticide. Additionally, nanocapsules exhibited lower toxicity to zebrafish and genetic toxicity to Vicia faba than pesticide technical. Therefore, stimuli-responsive nanocapsules based on imide polymer have broad application prospects in the field of pesticides.

Abstract:Microencapsulation of pesticide can reduce mammalian toxicity, phyto-toxicity, and protect the pesticides from rapid environmental degradation. The aim of this study was to develop a liquid-driven coaxial flow focusing (LDCFF) process for fabricating pesticide-loaded microcapsules having high encapsulation efficiency, loading efficiency and yield. We have optimized and evaluated the effects of process parameters on the size and morphology of pesticide-loaded microcapsules. The release of pesticides from pesticide-loaded microcapsules has sustained release profiles, which depends on their core-shell structure and shell material degradation process. LDCFF process enables successful encapsulation of pesticides in microcapsules with tunable characteristics important in pesticide applications.

Abstract:Pesticides play a crucial role in securing food production, their safety usage remains a pressing concern. Traditional pesticide formulations have been scrutinized for their inefficiency, environmental hazards, and negative impacts on human health. Here, sulfonated cellulose nanocrystals (sCNC) were utilized to stabilize molten lambda-cyhalothrin (LC), forming stable Pickering emulsions via high-pressure homogenization (HPH). This process was followed by the generation of microcapsules through interfacial polymerization, a method that entirely forgoes the use of surfactants and organic solvents. The synthesized microcapsules showcased a size ranging from 250 to 1000 nm, with an impressive LC encapsulation efficiency of up to 99.29 %. These microcapsules maintained excellent stability, prolonging pest control duration in field applications, and exhibited reduced toxicity to zebrafish. A particularly groundbreaking discovery was the ability of microcapsules to mitigate skin irritation, a benefit previously unexplored in LC microencapsulation. Furthermore, these microcapsules demonstrated significant degradation within 14 days post-application, effectively minimizing prolonged pesticide residue on crops. This study highlights the eco-friendly production of microcapsules and their capacity to diminish the negative impacts associated with pesticide application. It paves the way for the wider implementation of encapsulation technologies in pesticides and offers critical insights into the creation of sustainable, safe, and effective pesticide formulations.

Abstract:Biocompatible amphiphilic nanoparticles (NPs) with tunable particle morphology and surface property are important for their applications as functional materials. However, previously developed methods to prepare amphiphilic NPs generally involve several steps, especially an additional step for surface modification, greatly hindering their largescale production and widespread applications. Here, a versatile one-step strategy is developed to prepare biocompatible amphiphilic dimer NPs with tunable particle morphology and surface property. The amphiphilic dimer NPs, which consist of a hydrophobic shellac bulb and a hydrophilic poly(lactic acid) (PLA) bulb with PLA-poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) on the bulb surface, are prepared in a single step by controlled co-precipitation and self-assembly. Amphiphilic PLA-PEG/shellac dimer NPs demonstrate excellent tunability in particle morphology, thus showing good performances in controlling the interfacial curvature and emulsion type. In addition, temperature-responsive PLA-poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM)/shellac dimer NPs are prepared following the same method and emulsions stabilized by them show temperature-triggered response. The applications of PLA-PEG-folic acid (FA)/shellac dimer NPs for drug delivery have also been demonstrated, which show a very good performance. The strategy of preparing the dimer NPs is green, scalable, facile and versatile, which provides a good platform for the design of dimer NPs with tunable particle morphology and surface property for diverse applications.

Abstract:Biodegradable and biocompatibility polymeric microspheres have wide applications in many fields, especially as carriers for drug delivery and form the basis of several therapies approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. This paper describes the preparation controllable and monodisperse microspheres from biodegradable and biocompatibility polylactic acid (PLA) using a single microfluidic approach. We have demonstrated that one could control the size of microspheres from 15 mu m to 150 mu m in size (polydispersity index < 5%) by altering the relative sheath/sample flow rate ratio. Polylactic acid microspheres are ideally potential carrier for drug delivery.

Abstract:With the herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) as a model drug, a series of poly(vinyl alcohol)–starch (PVA–ST) composite films for controlled drug release were prepared by a casting method. The morphology, structure, and release properties were systematically investigated. The results show that when the PVA–ST composite film containing 2,4-D (PSD) was immersed in water, the drug-release rate was high, whereas the introduction of sodium montmorillonite (Na-MMT) and an alginate ion-crosslinking structure to PSD significantly reduced the release rate and maintained the sustained release of the model drug for a longer period. A leaching experiment through the soil layer showed that the PSD drug-loaded film with Na-MMT and the alginate ion-crosslinking structure (PSDMA) possessed good release properties. The cumulative leached amount of the herbicide 2,4-D after eight irrigations was reduced to 57.6% from 100%. In addition, the PSDMA film showed favorable mechanical and thermal properties. Abstract:Improving drug utilization of water-based pesticide formulations is facile and feasible to efficiently avoid serious pesticide residues and reduce the resulting environmental pollution. A co-delivery system of two- or multi-pesticides within one formulation could enhance drug efficiency and decrease usage amounts of pesticides due to the synergistic effect of the loaded multiple pesticides. Herein, we reported a porous polylactide (PLA) microcapsule formulation for co-delivery of avermectin (Av) and chlorantraniliprole (CAP). A double emulsion method combined with premix membrane emulsion (PME) was adopted to produce the Av/CAP-loaded porous microcapsules (Av/CAP P-MCs) with prolonged drug release, high loading content and entrapment efficiency, as well as good light and thermal stability. Compared with single Av- or CAP-loaded microcapsule formulations, the Av/CAP P-MCs exhibited higher biotoxicity against Plutella xylostella. These results reveal that the Av/CAP co-delivery system may be a promising candidate to be further explored as a facile, effective and environmentally-friendly pesticide formulation.

Abstract:Colloidosome is an important field of microencapsulation with various applications in catalysis, the food industry and pharmacy. Owing to its outstanding biocompatibility, silica colloidosomes are promising for biomedical applications. Nevertheless, silica modification as well as drug encapsulation are separated in some reported fabrication methods. In this article, bio-friendly materials SiO2 nanoparticles and chitosan are used in fabrication as dispersants. Pickering emulsion formed under the shear force of continuous phase n-octanol was further solidified and freeze-dried to obtain silica colloidosomes. In situ covalent modification of SiO2 nanoparticles' hydrophobicity by chitosan is the key to the formation of hollow silica colloidosomes and drug encapsulation can also be achieved during emulsion formation. By tuning the size of SiO2 nanoparticles and the solidification time of chitosan the size of interstices on the surface can be easily controlled to realize different release profiles of encapsulated drugs.
Formation of Hyperbranched Amphiphilic Terpolymers and Unimolecular Micelles in One-Pot Copolymerization

Abstract:Utilizing self-assembled structures made of small molecular surfactants or linear amphiphilic copolymers to encapsulate hydrophobic chemicals generally faces a dilution challenge due to their critical micelle concentrations. In this study, we designed a one-pot self-condensing vinyl terpolymerization of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEG) and methacrylic acid (MAA) in n-butyl acetate by using a vinyl-functionalized chain transfer agent (C-12-raft). In the presence of hydrophobic epoxiconazole (EP) as a model chemical that can complex with MAA, the resultant amphiphilic hyperbranched terpolymer chains can form unimolecular micelles with EP encapsulated inside. The effects of monomer composition and EP content on the stability of the resultant dispersions in both n-butyl acetate and redispersing water were studied by combining static and dynamic laser light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. We found the optimal encapsulation and stabilization molar ratio of [MAA]:[EP] = 1.0:0.8. Under such optimal conditions, the resultant dispersions can be stabilized for months in n-butyl acetate, good for storage, and for hours after redispersion in a large amount of water, sufficiently long for the field applications. Note that the principle demonstrated here is readily applicable to the dispersion and stabilization of other hydrophobic active ingredients, not only agrochemicals but also drugs, with some properly chosen monomers.
Fabrication and characterization of β-cypermethrin-loaded PLA microcapsules prepared by emulsion-solvent evaporation: loading and release properties

Abstract:Microcapsulses can be designed to effectively encapsulate, protect, and control the release of pesticides. In this study, emulsion-solvent evaporation method was used to fabricate microcapsules using dichloromethane as the solvent, polylactic acid (PLA) as the carrier materials, poly(vinyl alcohol) as the emulsifier, and β-cypermethrin as the entrapped pesticide. The effects of process parameters on the microcapsules characteristics (size, loading content, and encapsulation efficiency) were investigated. Also, the release behavior of the β-cypermethrin was measured experimentally and modeled mathematically. Kinetic analysis indicated that release mechanism of β-cypermethrin was compatible to Fickian diffusion. By optimizing the process parameters, β-cypermethrin-loaded microcapsules were successfully produced with spherical shape, smooth surface, high encapsulation efficiency (> 80%), and a range of pesticide contents. These parameters could be adjusted to achieve delivery systems with desirable release profiles. The results are beneficial to develop delivery systems for rational and effective usage of pesticides.

Abstract:Chitosan and sodium lignosulfonate are alternately deposited on the interface of alkaline lignin‐based Pickering emulsions through electrostatic interaction, thus forming biomass‐based microcapsules with tunable shell. In addition to improving the stability, chitosan and lignin also endow the microcapsules with pH/laccase‐responsive properties. Therefore, the microcapsules have great potential for the protection and controlled release of photosensitive drugs, e.g., avermectin. The extremely low utilization efficiency of pesticides has driven people to develop low‐cost, sustainable, and smart delivery systems. Pickering emulsion (PE) derived from biomass is an attractive candidate. However, the stability of PE is insufficient, and pesticide release from PE can be hardly tuned. Herein, a facile in situ PE modification strategy to construct a stable and high‐performance pesticide delivery system from biomass resources is reported. In this process, PE stabilized by alkali lignin nanoparticles is initially prepared, and subsequently, opposite‐charged chitosan (CH), and sodium lignosulfonate (SL) are alternatively deposited onto the PE interface through layer‐by‐layer assembly to form a microcapsule system (CH+SL)n@PE. The resulting biomass‐based microcapsules show improved stability, high encapsulation efficiency, and super UV protection to avermectin (AVM), a hydrophobic and photo‐sensitive pesticide. Furthermore, the shell thickness of microcapsules can be finely tuned by controlling the deposited CH+SL layers, which enable (CH+SL)n@PE to have adjustable release behaviors. (CH+SL)20@PE prolongs the half‐life of AVM under UV irradiation by 5.0‐fold. Moreover, (CH+SL)n@PE exhibits pH and laccase dual responsiveness, which is beneficial to the targeted release of AVM in vivo. Therefore, the current PE modification strategy can provide an eco‐friendly, low‐cost, and smart system for precise delivery of pesticides.

One-Pot Facile Synthesis of Double-Shelled Mesoporous Silica Microcapsules with an Improved Soft-Template Method for Sustainable Pest Management

Abstract:A controlled release formulation based on silica microcapsules is an ideal selection to improve both the effective utilization and duration of pesticides to decrease ecological damage. Herein, a simple and green method for preparing double-shelled microcapsules was developed using a newly prepared quaternary ammonium ionic liquid (IL) as the functional additive to entrap avermectin (Ave) in mesoporous silica nanospheres (MSNs) and tannic acid-Cu (TA-Cu) complex as the sealing agent to form the core-shell structure (Ave-IL@MSN@TA-Cu). The obtained microcapsules with an average size of 538 nm had pH-responsive release property and good stability in soil. The half-life of microcapsules (34.66 days) was 3 times that of Ave emulsifiable concentrate (EC) (11.55 days) in a test soil, which illustrated that microcapsules could protect Ave from rapid degradation by microorganisms by releasing TA, copper, and quaternary ammonium in the soil. Ave-IL@MSN@TA-Cu microcapsules had better nematicidal activity and antibacterial activity than Ave EC due to the synergistic effect of Ave, IL, and copper incorporated in the microcapsules. Pot experiments showed that the control efficacy of microcapsules was 87.10% against Meloidogyne incognita, which is better than that of Ave EC (41.94%) at the concentration of 1.0 mg/plant by the root-irrigation method after 60 days of treatment owing to the extended duration of Ave in microcapsules. The simple and green method for the preparation of double-shelled microcapsules based on natural quaternary ammonium IL would have tremendous potential for the extensive development of controlled release pesticide formulations.

Abstract:New nano/microcarriers of pesticides represent a highly promising novel field for sustainable pest management. However, despite extensive laboratory research, few studies on the design and evaluation of nanopesticides for field applications exist. In this study, we present a straightforward and green synthetic method of ultrasonic-assisted and hydrogen-bonded self-assembly at the oil-water interface for the synthesis of polylactic acid (PLA) microspheres encapsulating chlorantraniliprole (CAP), with precise control over the size of the microspheres. The resulting CAP-loaded PLA microspheres (CAP-PLA MS) exhibit both high pesticide encapsulation efficiency and stability in natural environments. It has been determined that non-Fickian diffusion mainly controls pesticide release, thus enabling dynamic control over molecular transport speeds. Importantly, our functional CAP-PLA MS demonstrates superior sustained pesticide release performance under both laboratory and field conditions while maintaining better exceptional insecticidal efficacy than normal CAP in controlling O. nubilalis at a concentration of 30 or 45 g/ha. Consequently, we propose that our functional PLA microspheres could serve as ideal pesticide carriers in the sustained treatment of O. nubilalis.
Plugging the Leak of Nanoparticles by Interfacial Polymer Adsorption Enables an Efficient Protein and Peptide Encapsulation

Abstract:The self‐assembled spermine‐functionalized poly(lactic‐co‐glycolic acid) interfacially deposited at the oil/water interface effectively seals the leakage of cargo nanoparticles, allowing for efficient encapsulation of proteins and peptides. The high mass fraction of therapeutics achieved through this approach results in the mass of administered amphiphilic materials that is 47.5 times smaller than that of non‐amphiphilic materials. A single injection of high‐loaded exenatide microparticles is found to effectively control blood glucose levels for 30 days. Encapsulation is a promising technology to enhance the pharmacokinetic properties of proteins and peptides, particularly addressing their short half‐life. Despite its potential, this method has limitations, such as low encapsulation efficiency, a minimal mass fraction of therapeutic agents, and the potential loss of biological activity. In this study, the pivotal role of amphiphilic polymers in achieving efficient protein and peptide encapsulation is delved into. It is found that these polymers not only improve the solvation of cargo nanoparticles but also form a robust 3D polymer layer at the oil/water interface. This interfacial polymer barrier effectively minimizes the escape of proteins and peptides during the encapsulation process, achieving an impressive encapsulation efficiency of up to 99.8% for agents. Remarkably, the mass fraction of these therapeutic agents in the resultant microparticles exceed 59.9 wt.%. The microparticles prolonged payload release for 30 days both in vitro and in vivo, leading to heightened therapeutic efficacy in type 2 diabetic rats. Furthermore, the required amount of polymer for administration is reduced by a factor of 47.5, substantially mitigating inflammatory response at the injection site. In conclusion, the findings highlight the transformative potential of using interfacial polymer accumulation to encapsulate proteins and peptides.
