Abstract:Blood is donated either as whole blood, with subsequent component processing, or through the use of apheresis devices that extract one or more components and return the rest of the donation to the donor. Blood component therapy supplanted whole blood transfusion in industrialized countries in the middle of the twentieth century and remains the standard of care for the majority of patients receiving a transfusion. Traditionally, blood has been processed into three main blood products: red blood cell concentrates; platelet concentrates; and transfusable plasma. Ensuring that these products are of high quality and that they deliver their intended benefits to patients throughout their shelf-life is a complex task. Further complexity has been added with the development of products stored under nonstandard conditions or subjected to additional manufacturing steps (e.g., cryopreserved platelets, irradiated red cells, and lyophilized plasma). Here we review established and emerging methodologies for assessing blood product quality and address controversies and uncertainties in this thriving and active field of investigation.
Comparative analysis of the quality of platelet concentrates produced by apheresis procedures, platelet rich plasma, and buffy coat

Abstract:Background Platelet concentrates (PCs) could be prepared using either whole‐blood processes or apheresis instruments. During collection, processing and storage, some biochemical and functional changes occur, which may result in quality reduction. Quality evaluation of PCs may be helpful for the precise control of platelet (PLT) inventory to reduce the risk of refractoriness and adverse effects caused by platelet transfusion. Study Design and Methods The study was aimed to evaluate the quality of PCs which were produced by five processes: apheresis (AP) procedures (using three different cell separators: Amicus, Trima Accel and MCS+ instruments), platelet rich plasma (PRP), and buffy coat (BC). A total of 100 PCs (20 of each group) were assessed in respect of routine quality control, morphology, size distribution, destroyed and activated platelets, and production of platelet‐derived microparticles (PMPs). Results All PCs have satisfied the recommended quality of volume, platelet count, residual WBC count, residual RBC count, pH, and sterility according to the Chinese Technical Manual. There was no difference among the 5 groups in morphology and size of PLT and PMPs. Dynamic light scattering test showed that apheresis PCs showed peaks around 10–20 nm, but not whole blood‐derived PCs. PCs prepared by Amicus had the relatively high percentage of destroyed platelet, activated platelets and PMPs than other groups. Discussion The data suggested high heterogeneity of PMPs, destroyed and activated platelets in PCs produced by different processes, which might be helpful to manage the platelet inventory for targeted use.

An insight to the internal quality control of blood components separated using the latest whole blood collection and processing systems: Experience from a tertiary care hospital blood transfusion service in Eastern India

Abstract:Background: With blood component therapy becoming the standard of care in transfusion medicine globally, the quality control (QC) of these components has become a routine and mandatory program in all blood centers. Extensive utilization of blood components has been observed in our multidisciplinary tertiary care hospital. We use quadruple bag systems and automated component extraction facilities for collection and processing of whole blood (WB). In this study, we analyzed our data relating to QC of all blood components which we prepare and issue for transfusion. Materials and methods: The retrospective 5-year study comprised 47,430 WB collections which were separated into blood components using quadruple bags and automated component extraction machine. A total of 90 units of WB were processed into blood components for the machine calibration and validation. Routine use of the system was started once the calibration and validation results were acceptable. At least 1% of each component prepared was subjected to QC as per departmental standard operating procedures. Statistical analysis was done using the SPSS statistical package. Results: The mean volume, hematocrit (Hct), platelet (PLT), and white blood cell (WBC) in 350 and 450 mL WB units were 394.63 mL, 39.43%, 0.93 × 1011, and 3.12 × 109 and 507.75 mL, 40.72%, 1.13 × 1011, and 3.45 × 109, respectively, with mean recovery of PLT and WBC in buffy coat being 95.54% and 68.63% and 97.87% and 74.51%, respectively. As high as 89.91% RBC recovery was noted in the packed red blood cell units which were subjected to QC. QC of random donor platelets was performed in 979 (2.36%) units with acceptable results. The mean fibrinogen and FVIII values were estimated to be 469.17 mg and 217.34 IU (1.07 IU/mL) and 600.21 mg and 273.39 IU (1.11 IU/mL) in fresh frozen plasma units prepared from 350 and 450 mL WB, respectively. A total of 578 (1.62%) units of cryoprecipitate were investigated for QC with favorable results. Conclusion: We conclude that QC data generated in this study will provide invaluable information about the performance of the latest blood collection systems. QC of all blood components under study complied with both national and international standards. We opine that all blood centers should establish a complete QC program and adhere to departmental protocols and manufacturer's instructions for its execution and effective outcome.

Abstract:The life of Vincent van Gogh is illustrative of the natural history of psychosocial stressors and their relationship to a person's states of health and disease. In the author's opinion, there is a lack of such understanding in the current, established criteria for psychosocial stressors in the diagnosis of adjustment disorder. By use of a life chart, which chronologically documents a person's major life events and concomitant health status over his or her life span, a fuller understanding can be reached regarding why an individual becomes ill at a particular time.
Comparison of single and double centrifugation methods for preparation of Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

Abstract:Objective: To compare the platelet count, platelet concentration/yield, residual Red blood cells (RBCs) and White blood cells (WBCs) counts in platelet-rich plasma (PRP) samples prepared from the single- and the double-centrifugation protocols. Methods: It was a Cross-Sectional study, conducted at the Department of Hematology & Transfusion Medicine, The Children's Hospital and UCHS, Lahore from October 2021 to January 2022 including 50 voluntary, healthy individuals of age 20-45 years of both genders, after taking informed consent. Complete blood count analysis of all participants was done initially by drawing 3ml blood in EDTA vial. From all the participants, 20 ml venous blood sample was taken in syringes containing tri-sodium citrate and then shifted to harvest tubes. Group-I comprised of PRP samples prepared by single- centrifugation method. While Group-II samples were prepared by Double-centrifugation method consisting of soft and hard spin. The platelet, RBC and WBC counts in prepared PRP samples were determined by using automated SYSMEX XP-100 hematology analyzer. Platelet yield or Platelet concentration (%) was calculated for samples using formula. The data analysis was done using SPSS version 23. Results: The mean PRP platelet count in Group-I was 594.6±157.4×103/μl whereas in Group-II was 923.06 ± 127.58×103/μl. In Group-I, the mean platelet concentration/yield in PRP was 175.75 ± 55.08% while in Group-II, it was 276.78 ± 112.7%. Significant difference was observed between the platelet counts and platelet concentration/yields from the PRP samples of two Group-s (p < 0.01). Significant difference between the WBCs count was also observed (p < 0.01) with higher WBCs in Group-I PRP. Residual RBCs were almost same among two Group-s. Conclusions: The double centrifugation protocol resulted in higher platelet quantity and yield with less contamination by red and white blood cells than did the single centrifugation protocol for PRP preparation. Need to reconsider national quality standards for red cell components: Evidence from a retrospective observational analysis

Abstract:Background & objectives Red cell concentrates (RCCs) must comply with applicable quality control (QC) standards to achieve the desired therapeutic effect in the recipient. In this study, we assessed the effect of change in the component preparation process on the quality of RCCs and their compliance with different QC standards. Methods A retrospective analysis of data for QC testing of RCCs over a period of 10 years, (from 2009 to 2019), was undertaken. QC testing parameters [volume, haematocrit (Hct), haemoglobin (Hb) content, white blood cell (WBC) content and percentage (%) haemolysis] were used to assess compliance with three national and three international QC standards. Linear regression analysis was done to assess the influence of donor variables. Results Data from 5,218 RCC units was included in the analysis. A majority (>50%) of RCCs prepared did not meet the three national QC standards either for volume or for Hct. The criteria for volume, Hct and Hb content, as defined in different international standards, were fulfilled by a majority (>75%) of RCCs evaluated. RCCs prepared by the buffy coat method had overall better compliance with QC standards compared to the platelet-rich plasma (PRP) method. The method of component preparation was found to influence Hb content, WBC content and percentage haemolysis. Male gender was associated with better Hb content. Interpretation & conclusions RCC prepared at our centre was found to have better compliance with international QC criteria compared to national standards. There is a need to reconsider the current national QC criteria for red cells with due consideration to the volume of whole blood collected and the method used for RCC preparation.
Impact of Plateletpheresis on the Hemoglobin, Hematocrit, and Total Red Blood Cell Count: An Updated Meta-Analysis

Abstract:Plateletpheresis has become a pivotal part of transfusion medicine. With the increasing demand for plateletpheresis, donor safety is an area of concern because plateletpheresis alters donor hematological parameters. For a better understanding of plateletpheresis, a systemic review is needed to study more evidence-based aspects of plateletpheresis. Electronic databases PubMed, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Library were used to find articles from January 1, 1980, to May 23, 2024. The random effect model was used to meta-analyze the effect of plateletpheresis on hematocrit, hemoglobin, and red blood cell (RBC) count. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guideline was followed. A total of 24 studies were found; the effect of plateletpheresis on hemoglobin, hematocrit, and RBC count was studied in the following respective numbers of donors: 3,374, 3,374, and 690. A decrease of hemoglobin, hematocrit, and RBC count was observed after plateletpheresis having a weighted mean difference (WMD) of 0.50 (95%CI = -0.72 to -0.27), WMD of -1.36 (95%CI = -2.05 to -0.66), and WMD of -0.18 (95%CI = -0.23 to -0.12), respectively. Plateletpheresis shows a decrease in the value of hematological parameters such as hemoglobin, hematocrit, and erythrocyte count due to blood loss in the kits employed in the procedure; cell lysis was also seen because of exposure of erythrocytes to stress or change in osmotic pressure. Thus, strict criteria for donation must be developed for better safety of the donors. Improved automated cell separators for plateletpheresis should be made available in blood banks to ensure good quality hematologic products. Our findings suggest that the duration of the procedure should be decreased.
Morphology and function of the cruciate ligaments in diapsids.

Abstract:The extant diapsids (amniotes with two temporal fenestrate) consist of archosaurs (birds and crocodiles) and of lepidosaurs (sphenodon and squamates). The dichotomy of these two lineages occurred in the upper Permian. Originally, the intraarticular knee ligaments were three cruciates. The intermediate cruciate (a posterior one with guiding function) is present in all diapsids, whilst the medial one (an anterior with guiding function) is absent in birds. The lateral cruciate ligament is subdivided into a lateral anterior and a medial posterior shank. The posterior shank disappeared in birds and crocodiles. The anterior shank disposes of a guiding function in archosaurs, and is in the course of reduction in lepidosaurs. The reduction process has progressed least in sphenodons, whereas the lateral cruciate of chameleons is totally absent. The anterior cruciates of birds (the lateral one) and of chameleons (the medial one) are hence not homologous. The morphology and function of the cruciate ligaments can be related with gait evolution.
How Rich is Platelet Rich Plasma? A Simple Preparation Method of PRP and Its Quality According to Various Classification Systems

Abstract:Background: platelets are a rich source of various growth factors and hence platelet rich plasma (PRP) is being used therapeutically in the fi eld of dermatology, orthopaedics and dentistry with promising results. However, methods of preparation of PRP vary with many commercial kits also available. Scoring systems like DEPA score, PAW system and sports medicine criteria score help in determining the quality of the fi nal product and guide therapy. Here we test a simple two step method for preparation of PRP and score it according to the abovementioned criteria while comparing it with the commercial kits analysed in literature. Methods: 10 ml whole blood was collected in 1.5 ml ACD solution from 100 healthy willing participants and analysed for platelet concentration. Sample was then centrifuged at 1600 rpm X 4 minutes in a calibrated laboratory centrifuge and supernatant was collected in a sterile tube using a sterile syringe. The supernatant was further concentrated for platelets by centrifuging at 3600 rpm X 10 minutes to form a platelet pellet at the bottom. All but 1 ml supernatant (Platelet defi cient plasma) was discarded and the platelet pellet was suspended again to form platelet rich plasma. Platelet count was estimated in this sample as done with the whole blood sample. The results were compared and analysed using statistical methods to determine the effi cacy of concentrating platelets by this method. Results: The tested method gave a fi nal concentration of more than four times the baseline concentration with approximately 30% effi ciency of capture and 80% purity. This was comparable to majority of the commercial systems tested in literature at a fraction of the cost. The scores according to various classifi cation systems were determined and reported. Conclusion: Every platelet rich plasma prepared for therapeutic purposes should be classifi ed according to any of the available scoring systems to determine its suitability for the purpose and to maintain uniformity in the quality of the product. The proposed two step method of preparation yields satisfactory quality of PRP by utilizing services of a basic laboratory at a fraction of the cost of commercial systems thereby enabling smaller medical institutions to utilize PRP therapy.

Abstract:Background Thrombocytopenia, common in preterm newborns, may increase bleeding risk and is often treated with transfusions. Recent studies reveal that transfusing platelets at a high threshold worsens outcomes, possibly due to a "developmental mismatch" between adult‐derived platelets and neonatal hemostatic system. Cord blood‐derived platelet concentrates (CBPCs) could be an alternative for newborns. Our study aims to produce and evaluate the quality parameters of CBPCs during storage. Study Design and Methods Cord blood was collected from placentas after near‐term and full‐term pregnancies. Several production methods were attempted to obtain CBPCs, varying centrifugation settings, filtration, and dilution procedures. Adult‐derived platelet concentrates (PCs) processed with the same methods, and standard PCs from five buffy‐coats were used as controls. Storage tests were performed on days 2, 4–5, 7 from the collection. Results CBPCs parameters were compared with adult‐derived PCs, and no significant differences were found for mean platelet volume (MPV), swirling, morphology, glucose, lactate, pCO2, and pO2. pH and bicarbonate were lower in CBPCs. Some significant differences between methods in CD62P expression and JC‐1 ratio were observed. Compared with standard PCs, CBPCs showed lower platelet concentration, pH, and JC‐1. Additionally, both in CBPCs as well as in control PCs, the apoptosis marker phosphatidylserine was elevated. Discussion CBPCs were of comparable quality to control PCs during storage. However, apoptosis markers in both groups were elevated, suggesting processing and storage of low volumes of PCs require further optimization. Also, filtration of low volumes leads to significant platelet loss, an issue that requires remedy.

Abstract:Background Transfusion of bacterially contaminated platelets may cause life threatening sepsis in the recipients. Cost of platelet screening is a major challenge for low middle income countries (LMICs). In this study, we evaluated the frequency of bacterial contamination in the platelet units (PUs) and the outcome of transfusing such platelets to the patients in a single institute at Pakistan. Material and methods During 2018–2022, whole blood-derived (WB-PU) and apheresis platelets (AP) were screened by BacT-ALERT® automated system. Single sample from each AP and samples from ≤ 5 WB-PUs were pooled and cultured within 24 h-post collection. An initial positive signal was followed by re-culture, Gram's staining, pool resolution and bacterial identification. Results were interpreted as 'confirmed positive' or 'indeterminate' and 'confirmed negative' based on differences in initial-reactive and final results. Results A total of 84246 PUs (476 AP and 83770 WB-PU) was screened, and 239 (0.28 %) culture bottles were positive on day one. Individual cultures were performed on 1378 PUs (239 bottles) for pool resolution. Seven of 1378 (0.5 %) PUs were 'confirmed positive' while 1371 (99.4 %) were 'indeterminate'. No bacterial growth was observed in 82868 (82392 WB-PU and 476 AP) of 84246 (98.3 %). Overall bacterial contamination rate was low at 1 in 12000 PUs approximately. Seven patients were transfused with contaminated PUs but no transfusion reaction was observed. Conclusion An insignificant risk of bacterial contamination was observed in this study but remains a concern for patient safety. LMICs need cost effective but efficient techniques to screen platelets for the presence of bacteria.

Abstract:Background: Structural and biochemical changes in stored platelets are influenced by collection and processing methods. This international study investigates the effects of platelet (PLT) processing and storage conditions on HMGB1, sCD40L, and sCD62P protein levels in platelet concentrate supernatants (PCs). Study design/methods: PC supernatants (n = 3748) were collected by each international centre using identical centrifugation methods (n = 9) and tested centrally using the ELISA/Luminex platform. Apheresis versus the buffy coat (BC-PC) method, plasma storage versus PAS and RT storage versus cold (4°C) were investigated. We focused on PC preparation collecting samples during early (RT: day 1-3; cold: day 1-5) and late (RT: day 4-7; cold: day 7-10) storage time points. Results: HMGB1, sCD40L, and sCD62P concentrations were similar during early storage periods, regardless of storage solution (BC-PC plasma and BC-PC PAS-E) or temperature. During storage and without PAS, sCD40L and CD62P in BC-PC supernatants increased significantly (+33% and +41%, respectively) depending on storage temperature (22 vs. 4°C). However, without PAS-E, levels decreased significantly (-31% and -20%, respectively), depending on storage temperature (22 vs. 4°C). Contrastingly, the processing method appeared to have greater impact on HMGB1 release versus storage duration. These data highlight increases in these parameters during storage and differences between preparation methods and storage temperatures. Conclusions: The HMGB1 release mechanism/intracellular pathways appear to differ from sCD62P and sCD40L. The extent to which these differences affect patient outcomes, particularly post-transfusion platelet increment and adverse events, warrants further investigation in clinical trials with various therapeutic indications.

Abstract:The aim of the present study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy between manual buffy coat-derived platelet concentrates (PCs) and automated apheresis platelet concentrates (APCs) in terms of their therapeutic effects. The corrected count increment (CCI) was calculated according to detected differences in platelet concentration in patients who underwent transfusion of APCs, prepared by an automated system (group I, 72 cases) or PCs derived from buffy coat by manual method (group II, 83 cases). The clinical efficacy was assessed in terms of the CCI and clinical symptoms. The platelet contents of all the PCs were detected before transfusion. The mean 1 h CCI was 13.56±4.45 and 24 h CCI was 8.67±4.21 in group I, while the mean 1 h CCI was 15.83±4.65 and 24 h CCI was 9.57±3.36 in group II. The effective rates judged by CCI for groups I and II were 53 and 64%, respectively, and those judged by clinical symptoms were 67 and 60%, respectively. In conclusion, the clinical effectiveness of manual PCs was similar to that for APCs; thus, it could be utilized for clinical use.
Review of concentration yields in commercially available platelet-rich plasma (PRP) systems: a call for PRP standardization

Abstract:Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has become increasingly popular in pain medicine with hopes of becoming a safe, effective alternative to routine treatments. However, given its autologous nature, PRP injectate may differ depending on the specific manufacturer and protocol. Currently, there is no standardization of reporting protocol. This systematic review compiles and standardizes values on PRP preparation and final product composition of platelets, white cell count, and growth factors for ease of comparison. On review of 876 studies, 13 studies were selected according to our inclusion criteria. Data from 33 PRP systems and protocols were extracted and standardized. Overall, PRP final product concentrations as well as PRP preparation protocols varied widely between systems. However, platelet concentration was directly correlated with both volume of blood collected and device centrifugal force. In conclusion, there is a large heterogeneity between PRP separation systems that must be resolved for proper study of this promising treatment.

Abstract:This mini-review analyzed two approaches to screening bacterial contamination and utilizing pathogen reduction technology (PRT) for Platelet concentrates (PCs). While the culture-based method is still considered the gold standard for detecting bacterial contamination in PCs, efforts in the past two decades to minimize transfusion-transmitted bacterial infections (TTBIs) have been insufficient to eliminate this infectious threat. PRTs have emerged as a crucial tool to enhance safety and mitigate these risks. The evidence suggests that the screening strategy for bacterial contamination is more successful in ensuring PC quality, decreasing the necessity for frequent transfusions, and improving resistance to platelet transfusion. Alternatively, the PRT approach is superior regarding PC safety. However, both methods are equally effective in managing bleeding. In conclusion, PRT can become a more prevalent means of safety for PCs compared to culture-based approaches and will soon comprehensively surpass culture-based bacterial contamination detection methods.

Image contrast based on intermolecular multiple-quantum coherences (iMQCs) is predicted to be useful for enhanced tumor detection. We compare images of mouse RIF-1 tumors acquired with iMQC and conventional T2-weighted sequences and conclude that the tumor to normal tissue contrast is larger for iMQC in some regions of the tumor. We also observe a strong dependence of tumor to normal tissue contrast with the choice of correlation distance.

Abstract:Background. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and its derivatives are used in several aesthetic, dental, and musculoskeletal procedures. Their efficacy is primarily due to the release of various growth factors (GF), interleukins, cytokines, and white blood cells. However, the PRP preparation methods are highly variable, and studies lack consistency in reporting complete procedures to prepare PRP and characterize PRP and its derivatives. Also, all the tissue-specific (in vivo and in vitro) interactions and functional properties of the various derivatives/factors of the PRP have not been taken into consideration by any study so far. This creates a potential space for further standardization of the PRP preparation methods and customization of PRP/PRP derivatives targeted at tissue-specific/pathology specific requirements that would enable efficacious and widely acceptable usage of PRP as main therapy, rather than being used as adjuvant therapy. The main objective of our study was to investigate the variability in PRP preparation methods and to analyze their efficacy and reliability. Method. This study considered articles published in the last 5 years, highlighting the variability in their PRP preparation methods and characterization of PRP. Following the PRISMA protocol, we selected 13 articles for the study. The selected articles were assessed using NHLBI quality assessment tool. Results. We noted differences in (1) approaches to producing PRP, (2) extent of characterization of PRP, (3) small scale and large-scale preparation methods, (4) in vitro and in vivo studies. Conclusion. We identified two studies describing the procedures which are simple, reproducible, economical, provide a good yield of platelets, and therefore can be considered methods for further tissue-specific and pathology-specific standardizations of PRP and its derivatives. We recommend further randomized studies to understand the full therapeutic potential of the constituents of PRP and its derivatives.

Detection of Bacterial Contamination of Apheresis Platelets in a Chinese Blood Center

Abstract:Bacterial contamination of platelets is considered as the most frequent infectious risk of transfusion. The prevalence of bacterial contamination has been reported and varied considerably in different countries, but the data for bacterial contamination of platelets in China are rarely reported. Eight thousand apheresis platelet concentrates (PCs) were analysed by aerobic and anaerobic cultures. Ten millilitres of PCs were inoculated into aerobic and anaerobic bottles (5 mL each), followed by the incubation for a maximum of 7 days. A new sample was taken from the unit for reculturing in order to confirm the initial positive reaction. All positive culture bottles were referred for bacterial isolation and identification. Twenty one cultures (0.26%) were flagged as positive in initial culture. Five cultures (0.06%) were confirmed as true positive and nine cultures (0.11%) were confirmed as indeterminate in reculture. A bacterium from skin flora (Propionibacterium spp.) was the most prevalent contaminant. Mean time to initial positive culture from start of incubation was 22.1 h for confirmed positive units and 97.3 h for indeterminate units. Most PC units had already been issued by the time of initial positive culture with a 'negative-to-date' issued strategy. There is a risk of bacterial contamination of PCs in China. Implementing bacterial screening of platelets could reduce the risk of septic reaction and fatalities due to transfusion of bacterially contaminated platelets. However, bacterial contamination PCs can still be transfused due to the delay until a positive signal in the culture system.

Abstract:The analysis of longitudinal dyadic data is challenging due to the complicated correlations within and between dyads, as well as possibly non‐ignorable dropouts. Based on a mixed‐effects hybrid model, we propose an approach to analyze longitudinal dyadic data with non‐ignorable dropouts. We factorize the joint distribution of the measurement and dropout processes into three components: the marginal distribution of random effects, the conditional distribution of the dropout process given the random effects, and the conditional distribution of the measurement process given the random effects and missing data patterns. We model the conditional dropout process using a discrete survival model, and the conditional measurement process using a latent‐class pattern‐mixture model. These models account for the dyadic interdependence using the “actor” and “partner” effects and dyad‐specific random effects. We use the latent‐dropout‐class approach to address the problem of a large number of missing data patterns caused by the dyadic data structure. We evaluate the performance of the proposed method using a simulation study, and apply our method to a longitudinal dyadic data set that arose from a prostate cancer trial.

Abstract:Background Microbial screening of platelet concentrates (PC) with automated culture methods is widely implemented to reduce septic transfusion reactions. Herein, detection of bacterial contamination in PC was compared between units prepared in plasma and a mix of plasma and platelet additive solution (PAS) and between the BACT/ALERT 3D and next generation BACT/ALERT VIRTUO systems. Study Design/Methods Double apheresis units were split into single units, diluted in either PAS (PAS‐PC) or plasma (plasma‐PC), and tested for in vitro quality and sterility prior to spiking with ~30 CFU/unit of Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus, Serratia marcescens, and Klebsiella pneumoniae or ~10 CFU/mL of Cutibacterium acnes. Spiked PC were sampled for BACT/ALERT testing (36 and 48 h post‐spiking) and colony counts (24, 36, and 48 h post‐spiking). Times to detection (TtoD) and bacterial loads were compared between PC products and BACT/ALERT systems (N = 3). Results Bacterial growth was similar in plasma‐PC and PAS‐PC. No significant differences in TtoD were observed between plasma‐PC and PAS‐PC at the 36‐h sampling time except for S. epidermidis which grew faster in plasma‐PC and C. acnes which was detected earlier in PAS‐PC (p
