Abstract:The concentration of dissolved oxygen in aquatic systems helps to regulate biodiversity<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03550-y#ref-CR1">1</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03550-y#ref-CR2">2</a>, nutrient biogeochemistry<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03550-y#ref-CR3">3</a>, greenhouse gas emissions<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03550-y#ref-CR4">4</a>, and the quality of drinking water<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03550-y#ref-CR5">5</a>. The long-term declines in dissolved oxygen concentrations in coastal and ocean waters have been linked to climate warming and human activity<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03550-y#ref-CR6">6</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03550-y#ref-CR7">7</a>, but little is known about the changes in dissolved oxygen concentrations in lakes. Although the solubility of dissolved oxygen decreases with increasing water temperatures, long-term lake trajectories are difficult to predict. Oxygen losses in warming lakes may be amplified by enhanced decomposition and stronger thermal stratification<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03550-y#ref-CR8">8</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03550-y#ref-CR9">9</a> or oxygen may increase as a result of enhanced primary production<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03550-y#ref-CR10">10</a>. Here we analyse a combined total of 45,148 dissolved oxygen and temperature profiles and calculate trends for 393 temperate lakes that span 1941 to 2017. We find that a decline in dissolved oxygen is widespread in surface and deep-water habitats. The decline in surface waters is primarily associated with reduced solubility under warmer water temperatures, although dissolved oxygen in surface waters increased in a subset of highly productive warming lakes, probably owing to increasing production of phytoplankton. By contrast, the decline in deep waters is associated with stronger thermal stratification and loss of water clarity, but not with changes in gas solubility. Our results suggest that climate change and declining water clarity have altered the physical and chemical environment of lakes. Declines in dissolved oxygen in freshwater are 2.75 to 9.3 times greater than observed in the world's oceans<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03550-y#ref-CR6">6</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03550-y#ref-CR7">7</a> and could threaten essential lake ecosystem services<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03550-y#ref-CR2">2</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03550-y#ref-CR3">3</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03550-y#ref-CR5">5</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03550-y#ref-CR11">11</a>.

Lake thermal structure drives interannual variability in summer anoxia dynamics in a eutrophic lake over 37 years

Abstract:Abstract. The concentration of oxygen is fundamental to lake water quality and ecosystem functioning through its control over habitat availability for organisms, redox reactions, and recycling of organic material. In many eutrophic lakes, oxygen depletion in the bottom layer (hypolimnion) occurs annually during summer stratification. The temporal and spatial extent of summer hypolimnetic anoxia is determined by interactions between the lake and its external drivers (e.g., catchment characteristics, nutrient loads, meteorology) as well as internal feedback mechanisms (e.g., organic matter recycling, phytoplankton blooms). How these drivers interact to control the evolution of lake anoxia over decadal timescales will determine, in part, the future lake water quality. In this study, we used a vertical one-dimensional hydrodynamic–ecological model (GLM-AED2) coupled with a calibrated hydrological catchment model (PIHM-Lake) to simulate the thermal and water quality dynamics of the eutrophic Lake Mendota (USA) over a 37 year period. The calibration and validation of the lake model consisted of a global sensitivity evaluation as well as the application of an optimization algorithm to improve the fit between observed and simulated data. We calculated stability indices (Schmidt stability, Birgean work, stored internal heat), identified spring mixing and summer stratification periods, and quantified the energy required for stratification and mixing. To qualify which external and internal factors were most important in driving the interannual variation in summer anoxia, we applied a random-forest classifier and multiple linear regressions to modeled ecosystem variables (e.g., stratification onset and offset, ice duration, gross primary production). Lake Mendota exhibited prolonged hypolimnetic anoxia each summer, lasting between 50–60 d. The summer heat budget, the timing of thermal stratification, and the gross primary production in the epilimnion prior to summer stratification were the most important predictors of the spatial and temporal extent of summer anoxia periods in Lake Mendota. Interannual variability in anoxia was largely driven by physical factors: earlier onset of thermal stratification in combination with a higher vertical stability strongly affected the duration and spatial extent of summer anoxia. A measured step change upward in summer anoxia in 2010 was unexplained by the GLM-AED2 model. Although the cause remains unknown, possible factors include invasion by the predacious zooplankton Bythotrephes longimanus. As the heat budget depended primarily on external meteorological conditions, the spatial and temporal extent of summer anoxia in Lake Mendota is likely to increase in the near future as a result of projected climate change in the region.

Abstract:A three‐dimensional hydrodynamic‐ecological model is applied to Lake Erie to predict the response of dissolved oxygen (DO) to independent changes in air temperature, wind speeds and total phosphorus (TP) loading. Warmer temperatures and lower wind speeds increased the size and duration of hypoxic and anoxic regions by lengthening the stratified period. Decreased wind speed increased hypolimnion thickness while decreasing its temperature and DO consumption rate. Decreased TP loading improved DO conditions with a reduction of 75% effectively abolishing hypoxia. Anoxia was more sensitive to air temperature, wind and nutrient changes than was hypoxia. New metrics that capture the spatial and temporal dimensions of low DO conditions were more sensitive than the commonly‐cited maximum areas of hypoxia or anoxia. Over most of the relevant range of forcing factors, the simple and first order effect of a 1 °C temperature change was equivalent to a 10‐14% change in TP loads, while a 1% change in wind speed was equivalent to a 2‐3% change in TP loads. Reduced ice cover in warmer climates will likely increase air temperature effects even further.

Abstract:Despite global evidence of lake deoxygenation, its duration, timing, and impacts over decadal to centennial timescales remain uncertain. This study introduces a novel model approach using 150 yr of limnological and paleolimnological data to evaluate the anthropogenic impacts on deep oxygen in Lake Geneva. Results highlight an increase in oxygen consumption rates due to cultural eutrophication, initially triggering historical hypoxia, subsequently exacerbated by reduced winter mixing induced by climate change. Simulations of pre‐eutrophication conditions and future climate scenarios define safe operating spaces for the lake to thrive without severe hypoxia risk. Complete winter mixing and O2 recharge once every 3 yr can compensate the oxygen demand in Lake Geneva, even when exceeding 1.5 g O2 m−2 d−1. However, when complete winter mixing becomes less frequent, even consumption rates similar to those observed before eutrophication can cause persistent hypoxia, posing a significant threat to the survival of hypolimnetic aquatic life.

Abstract:This study, focusing on Great Lakes Erie and Ontario, Canada, explores dissolved oxygen (DO) dynamics and its stable isotopic composition ( δ 18 O DO ) in the Great Lakes. Using historical dissolved oxygen data from 1965 to 2021, combined with synoptic isotopic data collected in the early 2000s, the research examined the spatiotemporal trends in DO and δ 18 O-DO to assess the effects of biotic and abiotic processes such as photosynthesis, respiration, and atmospheric gas exchange. The study revealed significant seasonal and depth-related variations in DO levels, with hypolimnetic hypoxia and metalimnetic oxygen minima (MOM) observed in both lakes. With its comparatively shallow depth and higher nutrient loads, Lake Erie exhibited more pronounced dissolved oxygen fluctuations, with DO levels reaching as low as 3.65 mg L −1 and δ 18 O DO values falling below +24.6 ‰. These findings indicated Lake Erie's more dynamic metabolic environment, particularly during the thermally stratified season. In contrast, Lake Ontario showed more stable oxygen concentration levels, with occasional dissolved oxygen depletions down to 6.80 mg L −1 and δ 18 O DO values up to +32.1 ‰, suggesting more localised influences of external inputs and biological processes. This study provides a long-term perspective on dissolved oxygen status in these lakes and offers essential insights into their ecological health. This work contributes valuable data for managing and protecting the Great Lakes ecosystem.

Abstract:Hypoxia in stratified waters greatly threatens aquatic ecology and societal development owing to enhanced nutrient discharge and increasing global temperature. Current research predominantly alleviates hypoxia by reducing dissolved oxygen (DO) consumption or conducting hypolimnetic oxygenation, yet their implementation has encountered bottlenecks. Therefore, this study explores the potential of increasing the inherent DO supplies in stratified reservoirs to mitigate hypoxia. High-frequency in situ observations and massive modeling experiments are integrated to discern the DO supply mode and the dominant driver of DO evolution. Results indicate that periodic thermodynamic conditions determine the DO supply relationships between oxygen sources (inflow carriage, reaeration, and photosynthesis) for different water layers. Thermal stratification causes the hypolimnion to rely mostly on the inflow for DO supply, leading to a fragile budget prone to hypoxia. However, episodic hydrodynamic events (turnover, wind stir, density current, and flood) can promote DO supply and inhibit hypoxia. Temperature and DO regimes are primarily driven by outflow conditions, followed by inflow and meteorology conditions. Furthermore, hypolimnetic hypoxia can be regulated by altering inflow volume, outflow volume, and outlet elevation. These findings highlight the importance of longitudinal solute exchange in DO evolution in stratified reservoirs, providing a basis for alleviating hypoxia through cascade reservoir operations.

Abstract:Recent expansion of anoxia has become a global issue and there is potential for worsening under global warming. At the same time, obtaining proper long-term instrumental oxygen records is difficult, thus reducing the possibility of recording long-term changes in oxygen shifts that can be related with climate or human influence. Varved lake sediments provide the better time frame to study this phenomenon at high resolution. We tracked the oxic/anoxic shifts of the varved Lake Montcortès since 1500CE, and tried to recognise anthropogenic and climatic influences combining biological and geochemical proxies. Four main scenarios emerged: 1) years with abrupt sediment inputs (A); 2) years with outstanding mixing and oxygenation of the water column (B); 3) years with strong stratification, anoxia, intense sulfur bacterial activity and increased biomass production (C); 4) years with stratification and anoxia, but relatively less biomass production (D). In line with current limnologic trends, high supra-annual variability in the occurrence of oxygenation events was observed. Interestingly, at least 45.3% of the years were mixing years and, like the meromictic ones, were mostly clustered into groups of consecutive years, thus alternating years of monomixis with years of meromixis. Most years of D belong to the period 1500-1820CE, when human activities were the most intense. Most years of A belonged to the climatic unstable period of 1850-1899CE. Years of B were irregularly distributed but were best represented in the period 1820-1849CE. Most years of C belonged to the 20th century. More than 90% of the years with climatic instrumental records belonged to B and C. Current climate warming seems to be taking control over the oxygenation capacity of the lake, especially since the second half of the 20th century. Our results support recent findings related to hypoxia spreading at the global scale.

Abstract:The intensifying global ocean deoxygenation has significant impacts on the oceanic ecological equilibrium. Gaps persist in understanding the dynamic evolution of global ocean oxygen throughout the 20th century due to the spatiotemporal sparsity of measurements and systematic biases within Earth system models. Here, we propose a novel spatiotemporal embedded artificial intelligence model that integrates diverse ocean datasets to construct a high-precision, monthly-resolved global ocean oxygen dataset spanning the past 140 years. Our quantitative analyses revealed a decline in global ocean oxygen content from 234.5 ± 0.4 Pmol in 1871 to 230.6 ± 0.4 Pmol in 2010, with a sharp drop of −1402.2 ± 173.6 Tmol per decade post-1980, attributing 98.5% of total oxygen loss in the past three decades alone. Our investigation further underscored that the critical temperature at the sea surface beyond which ocean oxygen begins to rapidly decrease is approximately 18°C. Forward-looking projections underlined the potential for a decline exceeding 10% in global ocean oxygen content relative to pre-1900 levels, under uncontrolled anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions by the end of the 21st century. These findings provide a comprehensive understanding of historical dynamics and future trajectories in global ocean oxygen, as well as a deeper knowledge of ocean deoxygenation and its underlying mechanisms.

Abstract:Lakes experience anthropogenically-forced changes that may initiate ecosystem feedbacks, in some cases reaching tipping points beyond which impacts become hard to reverse. Lakes are also important players in the global climate by ventilating a large share of terrestrial carbon back to the atmosphere as greenhouse gases, and will likely provide substantial feedbacks to climate change. In this paper we address various major changes in lake ecosystems, and discuss if tipping points can be identified, predicted, or prevented in them, along with their associated feedbacks to climate change. Potential tipping dynamics assessed include eutrophication-driven anoxia and internal phosphorus-loading, increased loading of organic matter from terrestrial to lake ecosystems (lake "browning"), lake formation or disappearance in response to cryosphere shifts, switching from nitrogen to phosphorus limitation, salinization, and the spread of invasive species. We also address other types of abrupt, or threshold-type shifts in lakes and ponds, and conclude on which tipping points are locally or regionally relevant. We identify a key set of co-drivers that could lead to self-sustaining feedbacks, with warming, browning, and eutrophication leading to increased lake stratification, heterotrophy, and algal mass, which separately or collectively drive benthic oxygen depletion and in turn increased greenhouse gas emissions (helping to drive further warming and organic matter loading) and internal phosphorus-loading (driving further eutrophication). Several of these processes can feature tipping points, which further warming will likely make easier to reach. We argue that the full importance of the vulnerability of lakes to climate and other anthropogenic impacts, as well as their feedback to climate is not yet fully acknowledged, so there is a need both for science and communication in this regard.

Lake browning counteracts cyanobacteria responses to nutrients: Evidence from phytoplankton dynamics in large enclosure experiments and comprehensive observational data

Abstract:Lakes worldwide are affected by multiple stressors, including climate change. This includes massive loading of both nutrients and humic substances to lakes during extreme weather events, which also may disrupt thermal stratification. Since multi-stressor effects vary widely in space and time, their combined ecological impacts remain difficult to predict. Therefore, we combined two consecutive large enclosure experiments with a comprehensive time-series and a broad-scale field survey to unravel the combined effects of storm-induced lake browning, nutrient enrichment and deep mixing on phytoplankton communities, focusing particularly on potentially toxic cyanobacterial blooms. The experimental results revealed that browning counteracted the stimulating effect of nutrients on phytoplankton and caused a shift from phototrophic cyanobacteria and chlorophytes to mixotrophic cryptophytes. Light limitation by browning was identified as the likely mechanism underlying this response. Deep-mixing increased microcystin concentrations in clear nutrient-enriched enclosures, caused by upwelling of a metalimnetic Planktothrix rubescens population. Monitoring data from a 25-year time-series of a eutrophic lake and from 588 northern European lakes corroborate the experimental results: Browning suppresses cyanobacteria in terms of both biovolume and proportion of the total phytoplankton biovolume. Both the experimental and observational results indicated a lower total phosphorus threshold for cyanobacterial bloom development in clearwater lakes (10-20 μg P L-1 ) than in humic lakes (20-30 μg P L-1 ). This finding provides management guidance for lakes receiving more nutrients and humic substances due to more frequent extreme weather events.
Geochemical records of Lake Erhai (South-Western China) reveal the anthropogenically-induced intensification of hypolimnetic anoxia in monomictic lakes

Abstract:In monomictic lakes, hypolimnetic anoxia is becoming severe in extent and duration over the past few decades. Understanding historical trends in hypolimnetic dissolved oxygen (DO) levels and the factors controlling them is crucial for effective protection and management of monomictic lakes everywhere, but the issue remains little studied in China. Here, our study elucidated the variation of hypolimnion DO and organic matter (OM) input in Lake Erhai (a typical monomictic lake in South-Western China) during the past 200 years, by using the geochemical profiles of elements (C, N, P, S, Mo, Ca, and Al) and aliphatic hydrocarbons in a dated sediment core. The values of element proxies (S concentrations, S/Al ratios, Mo enrichment factor, and total organic carbon/total P ratios) and pristane/phytane (Pr/Ph) ratios reflect relatively limited development of anoxia in the lake hypolimnion before 1990. Meanwhile, the n-alkane proxies (short-chain, middle-chain, and long-chain n-alkane abundances, n-C17/n-C16 alkane ratios, and Paq) indicate relatively scant inputs of OM from phytoplankton and relatively high inputs of OM from terrestrial plants or from submerged macrophytes. Taken together the results show that OM supplied in this period did not deteriorate hypolimnion DO in Lake Erhai. The element proxies and Pr/Ph ratios point to that the lake had experienced a pronounced intensification of hypolimnetic anoxia after 1990, and the n-alkane proxies indicate that the lake was susceptible to severe eutrophication and phytoplankton blooms in this period. The synchronous sharp variation implies the decay of massive phytoplankton OM had severely consumed oxygen in the lake hypolimnion. The large surface area/depth ratio in Lake Erhai is conducive for an overturn of the water column during wind disturbance, which allowed the water column stratification and relating effects (e.g., hypolimnetic anoxia) less vulnerable to some aspects of climate change.

Abstract:Recent changes in climate and eutrophication have caused increases in oxygen depletion in both freshwater and marine ecosystems. However, the impact of oxygen stress on zooplankton, which is the major trophic link between primary producers and fish, remains largely unknown in lakes. Therefore, we studied 41 lakes with different trophic and oxygen conditions to assess the role of oxygen stress on zooplankton communities and carbon transfer between phytoplankton and zooplankton. Samples were collected from each lake at the peak of summer stratification from three depth layers (the epilimnion, metalimnion, and hypolimnion). Our results revealed that freshwater zooplankton were relatively tolerant to anoxic conditions and the greatest changes in community structure were found in lakes with the highest oxygen deficits. This caused a switch in dominance from large to small species and reduced the zooplankton biomass in lower, anoxic layers of water, but not in the upper layers of water where the oxygen deficits began. This upper anoxic layer could thus be a very important refuge for zooplankton to avoid predation during the day. However, the reduction of zooplankton in the lower water layers was the main factor that reduced the effectiveness of carbon transfer between the phytoplankton and zooplankton.

Abstract:This study investigated the consumption of oxygen (O2) in 11 European lakes ranging from 48 m to 372 m deep. In lakes less than ~ 100 m deep, the main pathways for O2 consumption were organic matter (OM) mineralization at the sediment surface and oxidation of reduced compounds diffusing up from the sediment. In deeper lakes, mineralization of OM transported through the water column to the sediment represented a greater proportion of O2 consumption. This process predominated in the most productive lakes but declined with decreasing total phosphorous (TP) concentrations and hence primary production, when TP concentrations fell below a threshold value of ~ 10 mg P m−3. Oxygen uptake by the sediment and the flux of reduced compounds from the sediment in these deep lakes were 7.9–10.6 and 0.6–3.6 mmol m−2 d−1, respectively. These parameters did not depend on the lake's trophic state but did depend on sedimentation rates for the primarily allochthonous or already degraded OM. These results indicate that in lakes deeper than ~ 100 m, mineralization of autochthonous OM is mostly complete by the time of sedimentary burial. This explains why hypolimnetic O2 concentrations improve more rapidly following TP load reduction in deeper lakes relative to shallower lakes, where larger sediment‐based O2 consumption by settled OM and release of reduced substances may inhibit the restoration of hypolimnetic O2 concentrations.

Effects of phytoplankton blooms on fluxes and emissions of greenhouse gases in a eutrophic lake

Abstract:Lakes are important sources of greenhouse gases (GHGs) to the atmosphere. Factors controlling CO2, CH4 and N2O fluxes include eutrophication and warming, but the integrated influence of climate-warming-driven stratification, oxygen loss and resultant changes in bloom characteristics on GHGs are not well understood. Here we assessed the influence of contrasting meteorological conditions on stratification and phytoplankton bloom composition in a eutrophic lake, and tested for associated changes in GHGs inventories in both the shallow and deep waters, over three seasons (2010-2012). Atmospheric heatwaves had one of the most dramatic effects on GHGs. Indeed, cyanobacterial blooms that developed in response to heatwave events in 2012 enhanced both sedimentary CH4 concentrations (reaching up to 1mM) and emissions to the atmosphere (up to 8 mmol m-2 d-1). That summer, CH4 contributed 52% of the integrated warming potential of GHGs produced in the lake (in CO2 equivalents) as compared to between 34 and 39% in years without cyanobacterial blooms. High CH4 accumulation and subsequent emission in 2012 were preceded by CO2 and N2O consumption and under-saturation at the lake surface (uptakes at -30 mmol m-2 d-1 and -1.6 µmol m-2 d-1, respectively). Fall overturn presented a large efflux of N2O and CH4, particularly from the littoral zone after the cyanobacterial bloom. We provide evidence that, despite cooling observed at depth during hot summers, CH4 emissions increased via stronger stratification and surface warming, resulting in enhanced cyanobacterial biomass deposition and intensified bottom water anoxia. Our results, supported by recent literature reports, suggests a novel interplay between climate change effects on lake hydrodynamics that impacts both bloom characteristics and GHGs production in shallow eutrophic lakes. Given global trends of warming and enrichment, these interactive effects should be considered to more accurately predict the future global role of lakes in GHG emissions.

Abstract:Abstract Low dissolved oxygen, or hypoxia, is a common phenomenon in ice-covered lakes in winter. We measured dissolved oxygen (DO) before, during, and after ice-over to characterize the timing, severity, and spatial variability of winter hypoxia in Upper Red Rock Lake, Montana, home to one of the last remaining lacustrine populations of endemic Montana Arctic Grayling ( Thymallus arcticus ). Unlike most previous investigations of winterkill-prone lakes, we observed considerable horizontal spatial variability in DO, a non-linear winter oxygen depletion rate, and lake-wide re-oxygenation 2–4 weeks prior to spring ice loss. Parts of the upper 1 m of the lake and near stream mouths remained well-oxygenated even during late winter. DO levels were strongly associated with maximum daily air temperature. Our analysis of a 28-year weather record revealed large interannual variability in risk of winter hypoxia, with a slight declining trend in winter severity (number of days with maximum air temperatures ≤ 0°C) in Upper Red Rock Lake. The approach we used in our study provides a useful framework for quantifying and mapping the seasonal dynamics of the extent and severity of winter hypoxia, and for identifying critical winter habitats.

Abstract:The effect of purified, recombinant murine gamma interferon (IFN‐γ) on the regulation of macrophage proliferation induced by colony‐stimulating factor 1 (CSF‐1) was investigated. Although both hemopoietic stem cells (GM‐CFC) and tissue‐derived peritoneal exudate macrophages (PEM) proliferated in response to CSF‐1, the more mature PEM were much more sensitive to an antiproliferative effect of IFN‐γ. The role of IFN‐γ receptor expression and its relationship to growth inhibition was examined. Bone marrow cells as a whole did not exhibit an appreciable amount of IFN‐γ receptor binding activity. Likewise, nonadherent (NA) cells derived from CSF‐1‐stimulated bone marrow cultures displayed low levels of IFN‐γ receptor binding activity. On the contrary, more mature adherent (AD) cells (monocytes/macrophages) from the same culture exhibited high levels of IFN‐γ receptor binding activity which continued to increase with culture time. The elevated IFN‐γ binding activity is due to an increase in total receptor number rather than the binding affinity as judged by Scatchard analysis. Similar to the relationship between PEM and GM‐CFC, more mature AD cells were also more susceptible to the inhibitory effect of IFN‐γ on CSF‐1‐induced proliferation than their less mature NA counterparts. The fact that the sensitivity to IFN‐γ correlated well with the expression of existing IFN‐γ receptors strongly suggests that the inhibitory effect is mediated through IFN‐γ receptors. This study shows that the expression of IFN‐γ receptors in mononuclear phagocytes may not only represent one of the phenotypic parameters acquired by the growing macrophages during the process of differentiation, but may play some role in controlling proliferation.

Abstract:Ocean deoxygenation is becoming a major stressor for marine ecosystems due to anthropogenic climate change. Two major pathways through which climate change affects ocean oxygen are changes in wind fields and changes in air-sea heat and freshwater fluxes. Here, we use a global ocean biogeochemistry model run under historical atmospheric forcing to show that wind stress is the dominant driver of year-to-year oxygen variability in most ocean regions. Only in areas of water mass formation do air-sea heat and freshwater fluxes dominate year-to-year oxygen dynamics. The deoxygenation since the late 1960s has been driven mainly by changes in air-sea heat and freshwater fluxes. Part of this deoxygenation has been mitigated by wind-driven increases in ventilation and interior oxygen supply, mainly in the Southern Ocean. The predicted slowdown in wind stress intensification, combined with continued ocean warming, may therefore greatly accelerate ocean deoxygenation in the coming decades. The fact that the model used here, along with many state-of-the-art forced ocean models, underestimates recent ocean deoxygenation indicates the need to use forcing fields that better represent pre-industrial conditions during their spin-up.

The physical response of temperate lakes to artificial destratification

Abstract:Prolonged periods of thermal stratification in a lake suppress convective motions capable of vertical transport of dissolved oxygen and other dissolved and suspended matter. When this leads to anoxia in the hypolimnion, it can give rise to profound water quality implications. Artificial destratification is one means whereby low oxygen levels in the hypolimnion may be averted. The operating principles of bubble plume destratification and its effect on the physical transport and mixing that occurs in a lake are described. Monitoring of temperature and dissolved oxygen was conducted at Lake Nepean, Australia, prior to the destratification, and then continued for two summers while the destratification system was operating. The results showed that artificial destratification had an immediate effect on lake motions across a range of scales. The actual process of destratification occurred by the erosion of the base of the thermocline. Deep‐water temperatures were elevated well above historical values, the heat storage in the lake increased, and the time of turnover was brought forward 2.5 months. An integral plume model coupled with a one‐dimensional lake model is shown to predict the effect of the bubble plume entrainment and the subsequent redistribution of the entrained water throughout the lake.

Abstract:Oxygen bioavailability is declining in aquatic systems worldwide as a result of climate change and other anthropogenic stressors. For aquatic organisms, the consequences are poorly known but are likely to reflect both direct effects of declining oxygen bioavailability and interactions between oxygen and other stressors, including two—warming and acidification—that have received substantial attention in recent decades and that typically accompany oxygen changes. Drawing on the collected papers in this symposium volume ("An Oxygen Perspective on Climate Change"), we outline the causes and consequences of declining oxygen bioavailability. First, we discuss the scope of natural and predicted anthropogenic changes in aquatic oxygen levels. Although modern organisms are the result of long evolutionary histories during which they were exposed to natural oxygen regimes, anthropogenic change is now exposing them to more extreme conditions and novel combinations of low oxygen with other stressors. Second, we identify behavioral and physiological mechanisms that underlie the interactive effects of oxygen with other stressors, and we assess the range of potential organismal responses to oxygen limitation that occur across levels of biological organization and over multiple timescales. We argue that metabolism and energetics provide a powerful and unifying framework for understanding organism-oxygen interactions. Third, we conclude by outlining a set of approaches for maximizing the effectiveness of future work, including focusing on long-term experiments using biologically realistic variation in experimental factors and taking truly cross-disciplinary and integrative approaches to understanding and predicting future effects.
