Abstract:This study reports an environment-friendly protocol to prepare a metal–organic framework (MOF) with simultaneously controlled particle size and open metal site for adsorption removal of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). The successful preparation of UiO-66 with defect and crystal size modulation was achieved using a green and straightforward method, adjusting the components and molar ratios of ammonium salt/glycolic acid deep eutectic solvents (DESs). The corresponding modulation mechanism primarily relied on the combined regulation of the deprotonation and competitive coordination abilities of the eutectic solvent components. The adsorption process was thoroughly examined using spectral analyses, adsorption behavior profiling, and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The results revealed that PFAS adsorption is driven by combined capturing effects, such as CF–π, acid/base coordination, C–F⋯Zr, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic interactions. Our findings were not thus that the smaller the crystal size of MOF and the higher the defect concentration in the material, the better the PFAS adsorption performance. The result demonstrated the combined effect of these adsorbent features on PFAS mixtures. Furthermore, they revealed unique differences in sorption properties between these targets with different carbon chain lengths. Extensive defects in DES-based UiO-66 led to larger pores, increasing the availability of many adsorption sites and aiding in PFAS adsorption and diffusion. Nevertheless, the surplus of larger pores in the substance increased the competitive adsorption, reducing the total quantity of PFASs absorbed. Furthermore, various interactions and a less restrictive configuration increased the contact of functional groups with adsorbates, substantially enhancing the adsorption. This study investigates the basic questions about how PFAS molecules are adsorbed on DES-based MOFs and the relationship among the structure, properties, and performance to improve the efficiency of this novel adsorbent.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising adsorbents for legacy per-/polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), but they are being replaced by emerging PFASs. The effects of varying carbon chains and functional groups of emerging PFASs on their adsorption behavior on MOFs require attention. This study systematically revealed the structure-adsorption relationships and interaction mechanisms of legacy and emerging PFASs on a typical MOF MIL-101(Cr). It also presented an approach reflecting the average electronegativity of PFAS moieties for adsorption prediction. We demonstrated that short-chain or sulfonate PFASs showed higher adsorption capacities (μmol/g) on MIL-101(Cr) than their long-chain or carboxylate counterparts, respectively. Compared with linear PFASs, their branched isomers were found to exhibit a higher adsorption potential on MIL-101(Cr). In addition, the introduction of ether bond into PFAS molecule (e.g., hexafluoropropylene oxide dimeric acid, GenX) increased the adsorption capacity, while the replacement of CF2 moieties in PFAS molecule with CH2 moieties (e.g., 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate, 6:2 FTS) caused a decrease in adsorption. Divalent ions (such as Ca2+ and SO42-) and solution pH have a greater effect on the adsorption of PFASs containing ether bonds or more CF2 moieties. PFAS adsorption on MIL-101(Cr) was governed by electrostatic interaction, complexation, hydrogen bonding, π-CF interaction, and π-anion interaction as well as steric effects, which were associated with the molecular electronegativity and chain length of each PFAS. The average electronegativity of individual moieties (named Me) for each PFAS was estimated and found to show a significantly positive correlation with the corresponding adsorption capacity on MIL-101(Cr). The removal rates of major PFASs in contaminated groundwater by MIL-101(Cr) were also correlated with the corresponding Me values. These findings will assist with the adsorption prediction for a wide range of PFASs and contribute to tailoring efficient MOF materials.

Abstract:Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) represent a category of persistent and hazardous organic pollutants extensively prevalent across aquatic environments. The combination of adsorption and photocatalytic degradation has been identified as an effective approach for removing trace amounts of PFASs from water. Among the various materials explored for this purpose, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have structural solid tunability, and suitable modification methods could endow them with rich adsorption capabilities and excellent photocatalytic performance, which has potential for applications involving the treatment of trace, multi-chain-length PFASs in water. The research within this realm is currently in its nascent phase, and a holistic knowledge of modification methods can provide a comprehensive framework for future studies. Therefore, this review intends to (1) summarize the mechanism underlying the adsorption and photocatalytic removal of PFASs by MOFs; (2) present various modification methods aimed at enhancing the adsorption and photocatalytic performance of MOFs in alignment with the goal mentioned above; (3) provide an outlook on the prospects of utilizing MOFs for PFASs removal based on current trends and data. Ultimately, the findings from these studies will contribute to advancing knowledge in this area and facilitate the development of effective strategies for addressing PFASs contamination in water systems.

Abstract:Harmful per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are ubiquitously detected in aquatic environments, but their remediation remains challenging. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been recently identified as an advanced material class for the efficient removal of PFAS, but little is known about the fundamentals of the PFAS@MOF adsorption process. To address this knowledge gap, we evaluated the performance of 3 different MOFs for the removal of 8 PFAS classes from aqueous film-forming foam-impacted groundwater samples obtained from 11 U.S. Air Force installations. Due to their different pore sizes/shapes and the identity of metal node, MOFs NU-1000, UiO-66, and ZIF-8 were selected to investigate the role of MOF structures, PFAS properties, and water matrix on the PFAS@MOF adsorption process. We observed that PFAS@MOF adsorption is (i) dominated by electrostatic and acid-base interactions for anionic and non-ionic PFAS, respectively, (ii) preferred for long- over short-chain PFAS, (iii) strongly dependent on the nature of PFAS head group functionality, and (iv) compromised in the presence of ionic and neutral co-contaminants by competing for ion-exchange sites and PFAS binding. With this study, we elucidate the PFAS@MOF adsorption mechanism from complex water sources to guide the design of more efficient MOFs for the treatment of PFAS-contaminated water bodies.

Abstract:Poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have received considerable attention due to their toxicity, ubiquitous presence, and recalcitrance in the environment. The manufacturing and disposal of PFAS-containing products has resulted in PFAS contamination of groundwater and drinking water supplies. Substantial interest and efforts in developing PFAS treatment technologies has been triggered since PFAS are associated with numerous adverse health effects. Physical separation using activated carbon and ion exchange is the most widely adopted technique for PFAS removal from contaminated water. However, both adsorbents generally exhibit low PFAS adsorption capacities and/or slow adsorption kinetics. The development of efficient adsorbents is of urgent need. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are an emerging class of hybrid crystalline nanoporous materials, which are composed of inorganic and organic building blocks to form multidimensional networks. Key features—tunable structures and high internal surface areas—render MOFs as ideal platforms for PFAS removal from aqueous environments. This review critically examines the application of MOFs for PFAS removal and highlights the structural features of MOFs in context of their PFAS removal performances. Factors affecting the adsorption efficiency, regeneration, and application for PFAS detection are extensively discussed while also providing important insights on design strategies for next-generation MOF materials with improved PFAS removal performances.

Abstract:The metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with different metal nodes and organic ligands have been prepared and used to remove perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) from water. The results show that among three metal nodes of the MIL-53(A1), MIL-53(Fe) and MIL-101(Cr), MIl-53(Al) exhibit the best PFOS adsorption performance owing to the combined action of the highest unsaturated metal active sites and the smallest pore size. MIL-53(Al)-terephthalic acid (BDC), MIL-53(Al)-dimethyl 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylate (NDC) and MIL-53(Al)-biphenyl-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid (BPDC) differs from the length of the organic ligand and MIL-53(Al)-BPDC achieves superior PFOS adsorption performance. We propose that longer organic ligand will contribute to larger 1D channel window and provide more PFOS entry. Adsorption kinetics shows that the experimental values can be well fitted to pseudo-second-order model, indicating that chemical adsorption demonstrate in the adsorption process. Besides, the existence of Fe3+ ions in MOFs/PFOS system could improve PFOS removal because of the bridging and interaction between Fe3+ ions and the PFOS molecule, which is confirmed by the density functional theory (DFT) calculation. These optimized MOFs are hopeful adsorbents to remove PFOS from water in a sustainability perspective.

Abstract:The presence of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in water causes health effects on humans and animals over time. Among all techniques, the adsorption methodology has shown effective performance for removing PFAS from water. Different adsorbents, including classical powder activated carbon (AC) and metal organic frameworks (MOFs) as new generation of adsorbents have been used for the removal of short-chain (C<6) and long-chain (C>7) PFAS. However, due to the complexity of the adsorption process, the diversity of adsorbents and PFAS compounds, and the lack of standard experimental protocol, the effectiveness and undergoing sorption mechanisms for each of these adsorbents have not been investigated and compared systematically yet. In this work, we synthesized and characterized the adsorbents and then performed a systematic isotherm adsorption protocol to study the adsorption mechanisms and performance of adsorbents, including nanosized activated carbon AC, MIL-101 (Cr), MIL-101 (Cr)-NH2 and novel hybrid adsorbents of MIL-101 (Cr)@AC for the removal of perfluorooctane sulphonic acid (PFOS) from water. Based on the comparative analysis to investigate the effective parameters governing the PFOS adsorption with respect to each adsorbent, AC with around 93% PFOS removal showed supreme performance over other MOFs; however, MOF-based adsorbents showed faster adsorption compared to AC. The MIL-101(Cr)@AC (with 80% removal performance and 2h adsorption time) possessed the advantages of both AC and MIL-101 (Cr). The hydrophobic-hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions were the main dominant adsorption interactions for AC and MOFs, respectively, while both interactions were influential in the MIL-101 (Cr)@AC adsorption.

Abstract:Herein, we describe a new and sustainable strategy of directly constructing the amorphous metal-organic framework (MOF) through the use of deep eutectic solvent (DES) for the highly effective and efficient adsorption of organophosphorus pesticide from contaminated water. The as-obtained products possessed nanosize morphology (as small as 40 nm), hierarchical pores ranging from 1.16 to 12.3 nm, high porosity up to 0.5954 cm 3 g -1 , and abundant unsaturated metal centers. The presence of structural disorder increased the number of active sites and promoted the diffusion of target molecules, leading to enhance host-guest interactions. These properties were beneficial for the application of the material in the enrichment adsorption of profenofos. The amorphous UiO-66 with the highest content of defect disorder (4.408) displayed a remarkably high affinity toward profenofos, resulting in an exceptional adsorbate uptake capacity over 1300 mg·g -1 . This is a three-fold enhancement compared to its crystalline counterpart. And its performance surpassed that of most previously reported absorbents. Additionally, the adsorption behavior and mechanism of amorphous UiO-66 toward profenofos were elucidated by high-revolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and various models. The results revealed a multi-layer heterogeneous adsorption, involving multiple sorption process. The profenofos adsorption mechanisms over amorphous UiO-66 mainly rely on hydrogen bonding, Zr-O-P bonds, and P-Zr bonds. Moreover, the amorphous UiO-66 exhibited outstanding regeneration and reusability characteristics, making it a stable and promising adsorbent for water remediation. Its efficient and rapid removal of pollutants holds great potential for practical applications, while also providing guidelines for the design and optimization of next-generation sorbent.

Abstract:In this study, the urgent need for effective per‐ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) adsorbents is addressed by designing functionalized Zr‐MOFs. This approach enhances adsorption capacities for both short‐ and long‐chain PFAS through targeted modifications, promoting interactions between PFAS and the MOFs. Particularly notable is a fluorinated variant of MOF‐808, which exhibits unmatched capture capabilities. These findings are supported by insights from synchrotron characterization and theoretical calculations. Per‐ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are emerging as bioaccumulative and toxic water pollutants, posing a large threat to human and aquatic organisms. This threat is aggravated by their extreme persistence to common degradation methods. Adsorption is regarded as the most conventional method to treat these contaminants, however, existing sorbents present considerable limitations on performance. The development of more efficient PFAS adsorbents is therefore of urgent need. The class of metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) can hold great promise for these purposes, featuring porous materials with high tailoring potential. Herein, a series of functionalized Zr‐MOFs have been designed with boosted capacities for the adsorption of short‐ and long‐chain perfluorinated carboxylic acids of environmental interest. The approach relies on chemistry‐based concepts to introduce targeted post‐synthetic modifications that promote PFAS···MOF interactions, specifically through coordinative bonding and hydrophobic effects. In particular, the framework TFA‐MOF‐808 (TFA = trifluoroacetic acid) displays the highest capture capacities reported for MOF materials in this pollutant class. Mechanistic studies, assisted by advanced synchrotron characterization techniques and theoretical calculations, support a ligand exchange process occurring during the adsorption phenomena. The results demonstrate the potential of this design approach in developing advanced PFAS sorbents with optimal performance.

Efficient Removal of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances from Water with Zirconium-Based Metal–Organic Frameworks

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are an emerging class of contaminants raising increased levels of concern due to their toxic, bioaccumulative, and persistent nature. Current solutions for removing PFAS from contaminated water rely on adsorption-based methods where commonly used sorbents, for example, activated carbons and ion-exchange resins, exhibit low adsorption capacity and a long equilibration time. Motivated by the generally deficient performance of these current materials, this work addresses the need for the discovery of advanced sorbents for high capacity and efficient PFAS removal. The zirconium-based metal–organic framework (MOF) NU-1000 was characterized for the adsorption of three perfluorosulfonic acids (PFSAs, C4–C8) and six perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs, C1–C9) from aqueous solutions. The results indicate that NU-1000 exhibits outstanding adsorption capacities of 400–620 mg/g for PFSAs and 201–604 mg/g for PFCAs coupled with ultrafast adsorption kinetics featuring equilibrium times of <1 min. Complementary density functional theory calculations reveal that the adsorption mechanism is dominated by a combination of hydrogen bonding, electrostatic, and hydrophobic non-covalent PFAS–MOF interactions. Excellent regeneration and reusability characteristics were found, particularly nearly quantitative removal and recovery rates of NU-1000 after five consecutive adsoption and desorption cycles of PFAS. Additional adsorption testing using PFAS-contaminated groundwater samples obtained from U.S. Air Force bases revealed impressive PFAS removal rates of 75–98% within 10 min regardless of the presence of co-contaminants. Exceptionally High Perfluorooctanoic Acid Uptake in Water by a Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Framework through Synergistic Chemical and Physical Adsorption

Abstract:Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is an environmental contaminant ubiquitous in water resources, which as a xenobiotic and carcinogenic agent, severely endangers human health. The development of techniques for its efficient removal is therefore highly sought after. Herein, we demonstrate an unprecedented zirconium-based MOF (PCN-999) possessing Zr6 and biformate-bridged (Zr6)2 clusters simultaneously, which exhibits an exceptional PFOA uptake of 1089 mg/g (2.63 mmol/g), representing a ca. 50% increase over the previous record for MOFs. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies and computational analysis revealed that the (Zr6)2 clusters offer additional open coordination sites for hosting PFOA. The coordinated PFOAs further enhance the interaction between coordinated and free PFOAs for physical adsorption, boosting the adsorption capacity to an unparalleled high standard. Our findings represent a major step forward in the fundamental understanding of the MOF-based PFOA removal mechanism, paving the way toward the rational design of next-generation adsorbents for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) removal.

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), comprising over 9,000 persistent synthetic organic contaminants, are extensively found in the environment and pose significant risks to both human and ecological health. Among the strategies for addressing PFAS contamination, adsorption processes have proven to be cost-effective. Traditional sorbents such as ion-exchange resins and activated carbon have been found to exhibit low adsorption capacities and slow equilibration times. Recent innovations in porous materials, including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and porous organic polymers (POPs), however, offer significant improvements in the efficiency of PFAS adsorption. This review thoroughly examines the latest advancements in these materials, analyzing their mechanisms of adsorption, and concludes by suggesting directions for future research that could further enhance their effectiveness in PFAS management.
Efficient removal of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances by a metal-organic framework membrane with high selectivity and stability

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in water requires sufficient removal due to their extreme chemical stability and potential health risk. Membrane separation can be a promising strategy, while membranes with conventional structures used for PFAS removal often face challenges such as limited efficiency and stability. In this study, a novel metal-organic framework (MOF) membrane with local modification of polyamide (PA) was developed by introducing interfacial polymerization process during the construction of lamellar membranes with MOF nanosheets. Benefiting from the dense structure and strong negative surface charge, the PA-modified MOF membrane could effectively remove 11 types of PFAS (five short-chain and six long-chain ones with molecular weights ranging from 214.0 to 514.1 Da), especially displaying high rejections for short-chain PFAS (over 84%), along with a remarkable water permeance of 21.4 L·m⁻²·h⁻¹·bar⁻1. The membrane removal characteristics for PFAS were deeply analyzed by elucidating various rejection mechanisms, with particularly distinguishing the rejection and adsorption capacity. Moreover, the membrane stability was significantly enhanced, demonstrated by the structural integrity after 10 min of ultrasonic treatment and stable separation efficiency over 120 h of continuous filtration. With enhanced surface hydrophilicity and negative charge as well as dense membrane pores, the novel membrane also exhibited more superior anti-fouling performance compared to conventional lamellar and PA membranes, further manifesting advantages for practical applications. This work provides a promising solution for developing high-performance membranes tailored specifically for efficient PFAS removal, addressing a critical need in water treatment.
Underlying Mechanisms for the Impacts of Molecular Structures and Water Chemistry on the Enrichment of Poly/perfluoroalkyl Substances in Aqueous Aerosol

Abstract:Enrichment of ionic poly/perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in aqueous aerosol (AA) is an important pathway for them to enter atmosphere. In this study, the enrichment behaviors of 12 legacy and emerging PFASs in AA in both single solute and mixed solutions were investigated. The enrichment factors (EF) displayed a general increasing trend with the fluorinated carbon chain length. For the first time, a robust Quantitative Structure-Property Relationship (QSPR) model coupled with partial least-square method was established with fifteen quantum chemical descriptors. Four molecular descriptors, including dipole moment (μ), molecular weight (MW), the maximal value of the molecular surface potential (Vs, max) and molecular volume (V) were identified as the key structural variables affecting the PFASs enrichment. Inorganic salts and humic acid (HA) which are common in seawater, facilitated the PFASs enrichment as a result of enhanced hydrophobicity and the bridging effect caused by divalent cations. The typical cationic and anionic surfactants, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and sodium dodecyl sulfate, both inhibited the enrichment due to the competition between PFASs and surfactants. It is interesting that 6:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate (F53B) had the highest EF among the 12 PFASs, implying its strong potential of atmosphere transport.
Synthesis and characterization of PCN-222 metal organic framework and its application for removing perfluorooctane sulfonate from water

Abstract:Poly- and perfluoro alkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of man-made, notoriously persistent, and highly toxic contaminants in the environment reported worldwide. Many adsorbents including granular activated carbon, graphene, biochar, zeolites, and clay minerals have been tested for PFAS removal from water, but most of these materials suffer from high cost and/or poor removal performance. Here, we synthesized, characterized, and examined the efficiency of PCN-222(Fe), a new porous metal organic framework (MOF) with high water stability, for adsorptive removal of a frequently occurring PFAS, perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), from water. The adsorption isotherm and kinetic studies revealed high PFOS adsorption capacity of PCN-222 (2257 mg/g), with rapid PFOS removal rate (within 30 min). The structure of PCN-222 was unaffected in water in the pH range of 2-10 but disintegrated and lost its PFOS removal ability at pH > 10. The PFOS adsorption on PCN-222 was an endothermic reaction. Electrostatic attraction was a dominant mechanism for PFOS adsorption at < 1694 mg/g PFOS concentration, while hydrophobic interaction accompanied with hydrogen-bonding was responsible at ≥ 1694 mg/g PFOS concentration. The interlayer morphology of PCN-222 did not change due to increasing PFOS loading. The findings of this study demonstrated superior features of PCN-222 over other conventional adsorbents for its potential application in removing PFOS from contaminated water to reduce PFOS transfer from water to living organisms.
Multiple Interactions Steered High Affinity Toward PFAS on Ultrathin Layered Rare-Earth Hydroxide Nanosheets: Remediation Performance and Molecular-Level Insights.

Abstract:The global occurrence of per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in aquatic systems has raised concerns about their adverse effects on ecosystems and human health. Adsorption is a promising technique for the remediation of PFAS, yet effective adsorbents with rapid uptake kinetics and high adsorption capacity are still in high demand, and molecular-level understanding of the interfacial adsorption mechanisms is lacking. In this study, we developed a superior layered rare-earth hydroxide (LRH) adsorbent, ultrathin Y-2(OH)(4.86)Cl(1.44 center dot)1 center dot 07H(2)O (namely YOHCl) nanosheets, to achieve the effective removal of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). YOHCl nanosheets exhibited ultra-high adsorption capacity toward PFOA (up to 957.1 mg/g), which is 1.9 times and 9.3 times higher than the state-of-the-art layered double hydroxides (MgAl-LDH) and benchmark granular activated carbon (GAC) under the same conditions, respectively. Furthermore, YOHCl nanosheets pose stable performance on the removal of PFOA under various water matrices with robust reus-ability. We also developed YOHCl-based continuous-flow column, demonstrating its promise in simultaneously removing multiple PFAS with wide range of chain lengths at environmentally relevant concentrations. With the molecular-level investigations, we have revealed that multi-mechanism, including ion exchange, electrostatic attraction and bidentate/bridging coordination, contributed to the strong PFOA-YOHCl affinity, leading to the ultra-high adsorption capacity of PFOA. We have provided emerging LRHs-based adsorbents for the effective remediation of PFAS with molecular-level insights on the interfacial mechanisms.

Abstract:Many environmental pollutants inherently exist in their anionic forms and are therefore highly mobile in natural water systems. Cationic framework materials that can capture those pollutants are highly desirable but scarcely reported. Here we present a mesoporous cationic thorium-based MOF (SCU-8) containing channels with a large inner diameter of 2.2 nm and possessing a high surface area of 1360 m 2 g −1 . The anion-exchange properties of SCU-8 were explored with many anions including small oxo anions like ReO 4 − and Cr 2 O 7 2− as well as anionic organic dyes like methyl blue and the persistent organic pollutant, perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS). Both fast uptake kinetics and great sorption selectivity toward PFOS are observed. The underlying sorption mechanism was probed using quantum mechanical and molecular dynamics simulations. These computational results reveal that PFOS anions are immobilized in SCU-8 by driving forces including electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonds, hydrophobic interactions, and van der Waals interactions at different adsorption stages.

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have drawn great attention due to their wide distribution in water bodies and toxicity to human beings. Adsorption is considered as an efficient treatment technique for meeting the increasingly stringent environmental and health standards for PFAS. This paper systematically reviewed the current approaches of PFAS adsorption using different adsorbents from drinking water as well as synthetic and real wastewater. Adsorbents with large mesopores and high specific surface area adsorb PFAS faster, their adsorption capacities are high, and the adsorption process are usually more effective under low pH conditions. PFAS adsorption mechanisms mainly include electrostatic attraction, hydrophobic interaction, anion exchange, and ligand exchange. Various adsorbents show promising performances but challenges such as requirements of organic solvents in regeneration, low adsorption selectivity, and complicated adsorbent preparations should be addressed before large scale implementation. Moreover, the aid of decision-making tools including response surface methodology (RSM), techno-economic assessment (TEA), life cycle assessment (LCA), and multi criteria decision analysis (MCDA) were discussed for engineering applications. The use of these tools is highly recommended prior to scale-up to determine if the specific adsorption process is economically feasible and sustainable. This critical review presented insights into the most fundamental aspects of PFAS adsorption that would be helpful to the development of effective adsorbents for the removal of PFAS in future studies and provide opportunities for large-scale engineering applications.

Abstract:Perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs) were ubiquitously in the surface and groundwater. It is crucial and urgent to develop a rapid and ultrasensitive analysis method for the quantification of trace-level PFASs. Herein, a highly hydrophobic sorbent by capping phenylsilane groups on the surfaces of NH2-UiO-66(Zr) nanocrystals was used for efficient solid-phase microextraction (SPME) of PFASs in water samples. It was found that the superficially capped nanocrystals (NH2-UiO-66(Zr)-hp) exhibited both faster extraction kinetics and higher enrichment capacity than the non-capped nanocrystals. The extraction of eleven kinds of PFASs by NH2-UiO-66(Zr)-hp fiber reached equilibrium in 20 min, and the enrichment factors of the superficially capped nanocrystals were higher than those of the non-capped nanocrystals. The enrichment factors of the NH2-UiO-66(Zr)-hp fiber ranged from 6.5 to 48, with a preference for long-chain PFASs over short-chain PFASs. It was proposed that superficial capping eliminated competitive moisture adsorption on the surfaces of the non-capped nanocrystals, thus facilitating the adsorption of PFASs through hydrophobic interaction. By using this new sorbent, the limits of detection of the SPME method as low as 0.035 to 0.616 ng∙L−1 were achieved for the target PFASs. The recoveries of PFASs in the environmental water samples were 80.9%-120%. This study presents a new strategy for developing an efficient sorbent for PFASs by surface hydrophobic modification.
