Abstract:Researchers studying the evolution of antibiotic resistance have built a "morbidostat," a test tube–based system that automatically adjusts the amount of antibiotic delivered to keep in check the bacteria population growing in the tubes. The morbidostat studies show that bacteria can evolve in a repeatable manner, sometimes with the same mutations occurring over and over, the researchers reported at the meeting.
