Abstract:Background: Due to few teaching faculty, resource-limited settings may lack the education curricula providers need for safe practice. As safe surgery becomes an increasing priority worldwide, it is essential to improve access to critical education content including in transfusion medicine. Transfusion Camp is a longitudinal curriculum, shown to increase knowledge in postgraduate trainees. The objective was to develop a sustainable bilateral partnership between Rwanda and Canada, and to integrate Transfusion Camp into the existing curriculum of the School of Medicine and Pharmacy at University of Rwanda. Methods: A Transfusion Camp pilot course was initiated through collaboration of experts in Rwanda and Canada. Planning occurred over 6 months via online and in-person meetings. Canadian teaching faculty adapted course content via iterative discussion with Rwandan faculty. Final content was delivered through online pre-recorded lectures by Canadian Faculty, and in-person small-group seminars by Rwandan Faculty. Project feasibility was assessed through structured evaluation and informal debriefing. Results: Twenty-seven postgraduate trainees were present for the pilot course, of whom 21 (78%) submitted evaluation forms. While the structure and content of the adapted Transfusion Camp curriculum were well-received, the majority of respondents indicated a preference for in-person rather than pre-recorded lectures. Debriefing determined that future courses should focus on continuing education initiatives aimed at physicians entering or already in independent practice. Conclusion: A partnership between universities and blood operators in high-resource and resource-limited countries results in a transfusion medicine curriculum that is locally applicable, multidisciplinary, and supportive of learning benefitting the learners and educators alike.

Abstract:Purpose To evaluate the growth and quality of an IR training model designed for resource-constrained settings and implemented in Tanzania, as well as its overall potential to increase access to minimally invasive procedures across the region. Materials and Methods IR training in Tanzania began in 10/2018 through monthly deployment of visiting teaching teams for hands-on training combined with in-person and remote lectures. A competency-based two-year Master of Science (MSc) in IR curriculum was inaugurated at the nation's main teaching hospital in 10/2019, graduating its first two classes in 2021 and 2022. Procedural data, demographics, and clinical outcomes were collected and analyzed throughout the duration of this program. Results From 10/2018 to 7/2022, 1,595 procedures were performed in Tanzania: 1,236 non-vascular and 359 vascular, all with local fellows as primary operators. 97.2% were technically successful, 95.2% were without complication, and 28.9% were performed independently by Tanzanian fellows and faculty with no difference in complication and technical success rates (p=0.63 and 0.90, respectively), irrespective of procedural class. Ten IR physicians graduated from this program during the study period, followed by another three per year going forward. Partner training programs in Uganda and Rwanda mirroring this model commenced in 2023 and 2024, respectively. Conclusion The reported training model offers a practical and effective solution to meet many of the challenges associated with the lack of access to IR in sub-Saharan Africa.

Implementation and evaluation of a pilot WHO community first aid responder training in Kinshasa, DR Congo: A mixed method study

Abstract:Introduction: Prehospital care in many low- and middle-income countries is underdeveloped and needs strengthening for improved outcomes. Where formal prehospital care systems are under development, integration of a layperson first responder programme may help improve access for those in need. The World Health Organization recently developed the Community First Aid Responder (CFAR) learning program in support of this system, providing that it may require adaptation to be contextually suitable and sustainably implemented at country level. This study assesses a pilot WHO CFAR course in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, to inform future rollouts and related research. Methods: We conducted a 3-day in-person pilot CFAR training with 42 purposively selected community health workers. Data collection involved quantitative and qualitative phases. The first consisted of structured pre- and post-training surveys, and a course evaluation by participants. The second consisted of two focus group discussions involving purposively selected community health workers in one group, and a convenience sample of course instructors and organisers in the other. Perceptions regarding course content, perceived knowledge acquisition and self-confidence gain were analysed using descriptive statistics for the quantitative data and content analysis for qualitative data. Results: Course participants were predominantly male (76.3 %) with a median age of 42 years and most (80.5 %) had no prior first aid training. Most were satisfied that the learning objectives were reached, the logistics were adequate, and that the content and teaching language were appropriately tailored to local context. The majority (94.7 %) found the 3-day duration insufficient. There was a significant self-confidence gain regarding first aid skills (average 17.9 % in pre- to 95.3 % in post-training, p < 0.001). Favourable opinions on the course structure, content, logistics and teaching methods were noted. Conclusion: A CFAR course pilot was successfully conducted in Kinshasa. The course is appropriate for context and well received by participants. It can form a key component of developing prehospital care systems in resource-constrained settings.

Abstract:Background and Objectives Blood transfusion is performed daily in hospitals. Gaps exist between transfusion guidelines and day‐to‐day clinical care. These gaps are prevalent in resource‐limited settings due to scarce continuing medical education. Transfusion Camp Rwanda aims to bridge this gap by (1) delivering context‐appropriate up‐to‐date education, (2) teaching participants how to independently deliver a case‐based curriculum and (3) identifying strategies to promote change in transfusion practice in Rwanda. Materials and Methods In May 2023, a multidisciplinary team from Canada and Rwanda carried out a Transfusion Camp train‐the‐trainer workshop for clinicians from all five provinces in Rwanda. Participants attended in‐person lectures, seminars and workshop group discussions on the implementation of the Rwanda National Directives on Rational Use of Blood and Blood Components. Course feedback was based on the Kirkpatrick Model of Training and Evaluation. Results Fifty‐one physicians and laboratory technicians participated in the course. Confidence in caring for patients based on transfusion guidelines was self‐rated as 'excellent' by 23% of participants before and 77% after, while 84% reported they planned to teach Transfusion Camp to others and 100% responded that they will apply course content to clinical practice. Workshop groups recommended strategies to improve transfusion medicine practice in Rwanda in four domains: Communication, Institutional Approval, Practice Audits and Education. Conclusion Transfusion medicine education in Rwanda using a train‐the‐trainer approach was well‐received by participants and allowed for a more detailed understanding of the local medical and educational environment. These observations can inform the further expansion of the Transfusion Camp Rwanda project.

Abstract:Rwanda is a country in East Africa, a region characterized by highly mobile populations and outbreaks of high-consequence infectious diseases occurring on a regular basis. To increase the level of outbreak preparedness in the region, the Rwandan government and the German Ministry of Health signed a joint agreement to construct a new high-level isolation unit in Rwanda, the first in East Africa, and implement a training program for Rwandan healthcare workers to equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge for medical management of patients under high-level isolation conditions, including intensive care treatment. To better understand the scope and format of the planned training program, a needs assessment was performed based on findings from a standardized survey of 4 intensive care units in Rwanda as well as observations from 2 members of a German high-level isolation unit who completed clinical internships at Rwandan hospitals. In this case study, we describe the necessary steps to promote the sustainability and capabilities of the new high-level isolation unit in Kigali and ensure the successful implementation of the training program.
The neonatal resuscitation training project in rural South Africa

Abstract:A paediatrician trainer from Australia (JT) spent 3 months in South Africa to assist with the development of neonatal resuscitation training in rural areas, particularly in district hospitals. The project was initiated by the Rural Health Unit at the University of the Witwatersrand and coordinated through the Family Medicine Education Consortium (FaMEC). The Rural Workforce Agency of Victoria together with General Practice and Primary Health Care Northern Territory covered the salary and international travel costs of the trainer, while local costs were funded by provincial departments of health, participants and a Belgian funded FaMEC project. The trainer developed an appropriate one-day skills training course in neonatal resuscitation (NNR), using the South African Paediatric Association Manual of Resuscitation of the Newborn as pre-reading, and a course to train trainers in neonatal resuscitation. From July to October 2004 he moved around the country running the neonatal resuscitation course, and, more importantly, training and accrediting trainers to run their own courses on an ongoing basis. The neonatal resuscitation course involved pre- and post-course multiple-choice question tests to assess knowledge and application, and, later, pre- and post-course skills tests to assess competence. A total of 415 people, including 215 nurses and 192 doctors, attended the neonatal resuscitation courses in 28 different sites in eight provinces. In addition, 97 trainers were trained, in nine sites. The participants rated the course highly. Pre- and post-course tests showed a high level of learning and improved confidence. The logistical arrangements, through the departments of family medicine, worked well, but the programme was very demanding of the trainer. Lessons and experiences were not shared between provinces, leading to repetition of some problems. A clear issue around the country was a lack of adequate equipment in hospitals for neonatal resuscitation, which needs to be addressed by health authorities. A process of ongoing training has been established, with provincial coordinators taking responsibility for standards and the roll-out of training. A formal evaluation of the project is planned. The project serves as a model for skills training in rural areas in South Africa, and for collaboration between organisations. A number of specific recommendations are made for the future of this NNR training project, which offer lessons for similar programmes.
Utilization of technology to provide on-the-job trainings on Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care: Perspectives of nurses and midwives working in Rwanda’s remote health facilities

Abstract:Introduction One of the targets for the third sustainable development goals is to reduce worldwide maternal mortality ratio (MMR) to less than 70 deaths per 100,000 live births by 2030. To address issues affecting women and the newborns during childbirth and postnatal period, concerted efforts from governments and their stakeholders are crucial to maximize the use of technology to enhance frontline health professionals’ skills to provide the emergency obstetric and newborn care (EmONC). However, no study has garnered nurses’ and midwives’ perspectives regarding the application of technology-enhanced learning approach to provide on-the-job Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and factors that may influence the application of this training approach in the Rwandan context. Methods The study collected data from nurses and midwives from forty (40) public health facilities in remote areas nationwide. The study applied a qualitative descriptive design to explore and describe nurses’ and midwives’ perspectives on the feasibility and acceptability of technology enhanced learning approaches such as e-learning, phone-based remote training, and other online methods to provide trainings in EmONC. Two focus group discussions with EmONC mentors, two with nurses and midwives were conducted. Twelve key informant interviews were conducted. Participants were selected purposively. In total, 54 individuals were included in this study. A thematic approach was used to analyse data. Results Nurses and midwives highlighted the need to provide refresher trainings about the management of pre-eclampsia. Most of the EmONC trainings are still provided face-to-face and the use of technology enhanced learning approaches have not yet been embraced in delivering EmONC CPDs for nurses and midwives in remote areas. Nurses and midwives found the first developed prototype of smartphone app training of the EmONC acceptable as it met the midwives’ expectations in terms of the knowledge and skills’ gap in EmONC. Conclusion Although the newly developed application was found acceptable, further research involving practical sessions by nurses and midwives using the developed application is needed to garner views about the ease of use of the application, relevance of the EmONC uploaded content on the app, and needed improvements on the app to address their needs in EmONC.

Abstract:Background: Reproductive health emergencies, such as postpartum hemorrhage, contribute significantly to maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality in Uganda due to knowledge and skills gaps. Medical interns, intern midwives, and nurses are crucial as frontline healthcare workers in responding to these emergencies. Our proposed hands-on strategy involves comprehensive simulation-based training (SBT) to equip these healthcare workers with the essential knowledge to manage common reproductive health emergencies and procedures in the country. Objectives: The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of comprehensive SBT in improving the knowledge of interns and fifth-year medical students on reproductive health emergencies and procedures at Gulu University and its Teaching Hospitals in Uganda. Design: A before-and-after study. Methods: A 4-day SBT was conducted for fifth-year medical students and interns (nurses, midwives, and doctors) at Gulu University Teaching Hospitals, focusing on reproductive health emergencies. Pre- and post-tests with 40 multiple-choice questions were used to evaluate knowledge enhancement, the scores were summarized as medians and interquartile ranges. Paired sample t-tests was used to test the difference in pre- and post-test scores. Independent sample t-tests compared median post-test results between interns and students, with a p-value <0.05 considered significant. Results: A total of 153 participants were enrolled, the majority being males (78.4%, n = 120) and medical students (73.9%, n = 113). Among the 40 interns, 55% (n = 22) were doctors, 30% (n = 12) were midwives, and 15% (n = 6) were nurses. The study participants showed an increase in knowledge, with median post-test scores higher than pre-test scores for all participants [63% (interquartile ranges, IQR: 57-71%) versus 49% (42-54%), with a median difference of 14% (8-23%), p < 0.001]. Conclusion: The SBT effectively imparts key knowledge competencies to the interns and fifth-year medical students. We recommend that SBT be included as part of the course units that students should take and for continuous medical education for qualified healthcare workers in resource-limited settings.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The Rwanda Human Resources for Health Program (HRH Program) is a 7-year (2012-2019) health professional training initiative led by the Government of Rwanda with the goals of training a large, diverse, and competent health workforce and strengthening the capacity of academic institutions in Rwanda.METHODS: The data for this organizational case study was collected through official reports from the Rwanda Ministry of Health (MoH) and 22 participating US academic institutions, databases from the MoH and the College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS) in Rwanda, and surveys completed by the co-authors.RESULTS: In the first 5 years of the HRH Program, a consortium of US academic institutions has deployed an average of 99 visiting faculty per year to support 22 training programs, which are on track to graduate almost 4600 students by 2019. The HRH Program has also built capacity within the CMHS by promoting the recruitment of Rwandan faculty and the establishment of additional partnerships and collaborations with the US academic institutions.CONCLUSION: The milestones achieved by the HRH Program have been substantial although some challenges persist. These challenges include adequately supporting the visiting faculty; pairing them with Rwandan faculty (twinning); ensuring strong communication and coordination among stakeholders; addressing mismatches in priorities between donors and implementers; the execution of a sustainability strategy; and the decision by one of the donors not to renew funding beyond March 2017. Over the next 2 academic years, it is critical for the sustainability of the 22 training programs supported by the HRH Program that the health-related Schools at the CMHS significantly scale up recruitment of new Rwandan faculty. The HRH Program can serve as a model for other training initiatives implemented in countries affected by a severe shortage of health professionals.

Abstract:Global disparities in the quantity, distribution, and skills of health workers worldwide pose a threat to attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 and deepens already existing global health inequities. Rwanda and other low-resource countries face a critical shortage of health professionals, particularly nurses and midwives. This article describes the Human Resources for Health (HRH) Program in Rwanda, a collaboration between the Ministry of Health of Rwanda and a U.S. consortium of academic institutions. The ultimate goal of the HRH Program is to strengthen health service delivery and to achieve health equity for the poor. The aim of this article is to highlight the HRH nursing and midwifery contributions to capacity building in academic and clinical educational programs throughout Rwanda. International academic partnerships need to align with the priorities of the host country, integrate the strengths of available resources, and encourage a collaborative environment of cultural humility and self-awareness for all participants.

Impact of the training, support and access model (TSAM) on patient health outcomes in Rwanda: controlled longitudinal study

Abstract:Achieving maternal and newborn health (MNH) related Sustainable Development Goal targets will require high-quality health systems in low- and middle-income countries. While over 90% of deliveries in Rwanda take place in health facilities, maternal and neonatal mortality rates remain high. In an effort to bolster quality of care provided to women and newborns to ultimately reduce morbidity and mortality, the Training, Support and Access Model (TSAM) clinical mentorship was established in 10 district hospitals in Rwanda in 2017. We evaluated the impact of the TSAM clinical mentorship intervention on maternal and newborn health outcomes. We used monthly time series data from the DHIS2-enabled Rwanda health management information system from February 2014 to February 2020 to assess the impact of the TSAM intervention on outcomes of care for MNH in intervention hospitals relative to concurrent control hospitals. Using a controlled quasi-experimental interrupted time series analysis, we estimated changes in rates of inpatient mortality and morbidity for MNH associated with the implementation of the TSAM clinical mentorship. The study cohort included 25 hospitals (10 TSAM hospitals and 15 control hospitals) that collectively reported 339,850 hospital deliveries and 94,584 neonatal hospital admissions. We found that the implementation of the TSAM clinical mentorship intervention was associated with a two-years reduction of 84% in the obstetrical complication case fatality rate, 32% in hospital neonatal mortality rate, 30% in postpartum hemorrhage incidence rate, and 48% in neonatal asphyxia incidence rate in TSAM hospitals relative to control hospitals. However, the stillbirth rate did not decline following the TSAM intervention. We found that a quality improvement strategy that employed continuous quality improvement approaches using onsite clinical mentorship of health providers along with involvement of health facility leadership to facilitate the improvement was associated with improvements in MNH in Rwanda. Our findings provide evidence that can justify the scale up of TSAM across the country and potentially in other similar settings.
Characterize the vasculatures distribution of murine tumors between center and peripheral regions based on doppler ultrasound and immunofluorescent analysis

Abstract:The tumor microenvironment changes are an important prognostic indicator for assessment of therapeutic efficacy, especially tumor vasculatures, because the delivery efficiency of drugs and oxygen is dependent on the perfusion and distribution of the tumor vasculature. Since, the heterogeneity of tumors is the main obstacle to treatment, observing the information about tumor behaviors within the central and peripheral regions of a tumor could be helpful for improving tumor therapies. Murine tumors were monitored for 11 days. The tumor perfusion was estimated by means of power Doppler images at a central frequency of 25 MHz. Tumors were removed for immunohistochemical analysis of their vascular density using CD31 staining at each analysis time point. The spatial characteristics of the tumor vasculature were quantified by calculating the γ value derived from fitting with a power-law transformation for different fractions of the peripheral area. During tumor progression, the γ value significantly decreased in the power Doppler images but not in the immunohistochemical analysis. These results suggest that the perfusion spread more in peripheral region of the tumor than in the central region while the vascular density still appear evenly distributed. Observing the information of tumor behaviors within center and peripheral tumor regions by spatial analysis will be useful in adjusting dose of treatment for optimal strategies.

Abstract:Background: Uganda currently has no organized prehospital emergency system. We sought to measure the current burden of injury seen by lay people in Kampala, Uganda and to determine the feasibility of a lay first-responder training program. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of current prehospital care providers in Kampala: police officers, minibus taxi drivers, and Local Council officials, and collected data on types and frequencies of emergencies witnessed, barriers to aid provision, history of training, and current availability of first-aid supplies. A context-appropriate course on basic first-aid for trauma was designed and implemented. We measured changes in trainees' fund of knowledge before and after training. Results: A total of 309 lay people participated in the study, and during the previous 6 months saw 18 traumatic emergencies each; 39% saw an injury-related death. The most common injury mechanisms were road crashes, assault, and burns. In these cases, 90% of trainees provided some aid, most commonly lifting (82%) or transport (76%). Fifty-two percent of trainees had previous first-aid training, 44% had some access to equipment, and 32% had ever purchased a first-aid kit. Before training, participants answered 45% of test questions correctly (mean %) and this increased to 86% after training (p < 0.0001). Conclusions: Lay people witness many emergencies and deaths in Kampala, Uganda and provide much needed care but are ill-prepared to do so. A context-appropriate prehospital trauma care course can be developed and improve lay people's knowledge of basic trauma care. The effectiveness of such a training program needs to be evaluated prospectively.
Evaluation of a Neonatal Resuscitation Training Programme for Healthcare Professionals in Zanzibar, Tanzania: A Pre-post Intervention Study

Abstract:Background: Neonatal mortality rates remain high in Sub-Saharan African countries. Improving the newborn resuscitation skills of healthcare professionals is important in addressing this challenge. The aim of this study was to evaluate a neonatal resuscitation training programme delivered over a two-year period for healthcare professionals in Zanzibar, Tanzania. Methods: A pre- and post-intervention study was designed. We delivered neonatal resuscitation training over a 2-day period in 2017 and 2 days of refresher training in 2018. Knowledge was evaluated by a self-designed survey (11 items with a total score of 22) before and after the two training periods, and skills were evaluated by a skills checklist (six domains with 25 items with a total score of 50) completed by the trainers based on their observations. Statistical analysis included differences in the knowledge and skills scores before and after the training sessions and between the two periods. Results: A total of 23 healthcare professionals participated and completed both neonatal resuscitation training sessions. The knowledge mean scores before and after the training in 2017 increased from 9.60 to 13.60 (95% CI: −5.900; −2.099, p < 0.001), and in 2018, the scores increased from 10.80 to 15.44 (95% CI: −6.062; −3.217, p < 0.001). The mean knowledge scores post-training over time were 13.60 in 2017 and 15.44 in 2018 (95% CI: −3.489; 0.190, p = 0.030). The resuscitation skills performance between the two time periods increased from a mean of 32.26 (SD = 2.35) to a mean of 42.43 (SD = 1.73) (95% CI: −11.402; −8.945, p < 0.001). Conclusion: The neonatal resuscitation training programme increased the theoretical knowledge and resuscitation skills before and after the two training sessions and over time after a 9-month period. Continuous neonatal resuscitation training based on the local needs in resource-limited countries is essential to provide confidence in healthcare professionals to initiate resuscitation and to improve newborn outcomes.

Abstract:The International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) defines and sets the Essential Competencies for Midwifery Practice and provides a framework for developing and reviewing midwifery curricula. This framework ensures that pre-service midwifery education designed for students leads to the demonstration of the required midwifery specific competencies. The development of the ICM competencies in 2024 confirms the timeliness of the effort of Rwanda to update its national curricula. This commentary showcases the blueprint followed by Rwanda to standardize and culturally adapt its midwifery curricula at diploma, bachelor and master's level to be competency-based and aligned with ICM. National ownership played a pivotal role in the standardization process, as the direction, priorities, and implementation of the curricula review initiative were driven by the country's own government, higher learning institutes, national midwifery association and other national organizations. Rwanda's experience in aligning its national curricula with international standards could serve as a model for south–south cooperation.

Abstract:Background: The Collaboration for Evidence-based Healthcare and Public Health in Africa (CEBHA+) developed and offered a course on evidence-based public health (EBPH) in five sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries to enhance individual and institutional capacity. Aim: This study aims to assess, compare and learn from implementing the CEBHA+ EBPH course using the Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, Maintenance (RE-AIM) framework and Practical, Robust, Implementation and Sustainability Model (PRISM). Setting: This study involved CEHBA+ partner universities in five countries in SSA. Methods: We developed a framework that draws on signalling questions for RE-AIM and PRISM dimensions. Country teams reflected on, discussed and mapped unique experiences. Using this framework, we then elicited common themes across countries and distilled country-specific experiences through virtual discussions. Results: Across countries, 130 public health practitioners, researchers and students completed the course (Reach). The course increased EBPH knowledge and skills and the capacity to teach EBPH and resulted in immediate opportunities for applying skills (Effectiveness). Hybrid offering in two countries presented challenges regarding Internet connectivity and hybrid discussions. Facilitators had previous training in teaching EBPH. While learning material was the same across countries, the content was adapted to represent local public health priorities (Implementation, Adoption). Course materials have informed other related training leading to spin-offs (Maintenance). Institutionalisation is dependent on external funding. Conclusion: Strengthening EBPH capacity across contexts is feasible. Curricula containing both core and contextualised elements create an authentic learning environment. Formal evaluations should be embedded within capacity-strengthening initiatives. Contribution: This is the first study evaluating EBPH training in SSA using an implementation science lens, offering learning about context-relevant adaptations that assist with plans for sustainability and scale.

Abstract:Abstract Background: Globally, mobile learning (mLearning) tools have attracted considerable attention as a means of continuous training for healthcare workers. Rwanda like other low-resource settings with scarce in-service training opportunities requires innovative approaches that adapt technology to context to improve healthcare workers’ knowledge and skills. One such innovation is the safe delivery application (SDA), a smartphone mLearning application for Basic Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care (BEmONC) content. This study assessed the effect of the SDA intervention on nurses’ and midwives’ knowledge and skills for the management of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) and neonatal resuscitation (NR). Methods: The study used a pre-post, quasi-experimental design to compare knowledge and skills of nurses and midwives in the management of PPH and NR at two measurement points: immediately prior SDA intervention and after 6 months SDA intervention. The intervention took place in two district hospitals in Rwanda and included 54 participants. A paired-sample t-test was used to measure the pre-post intervention, mean knowledge and skills scores differences. Confidence intervals (CIs) and effect size were calculated. A t-test and a one-way Anova was used to test for potential confounders. Results: The analysis included 54 participants. Knowledge scores and skills scores on PPH management and NR increased significantly from baseline to endline measurements. The mean difference for PPH knowledge is 17.1 out of 100; 95% CI = 14.69 to 19.49 and 2.6% for PPH skills; 95% CI = 1.01 to 4.25. The mean difference for NR knowledge is 19.1 out of 100; 95% CI = 16.31 to 21,76 and 5.5% for NR skills; 95% CI = 3.66 to 7.41. Increases were unaffected by participants’ attendance to in-service training six months prior and during SDA intervention and previous smartphone use. However, pre- and post-intervention skills scores were significantly different by years of experience in obstetric care. Conclusion: The SDA intervention improved the knowledge and skills of nurses and midwives on the management of PPH and NR as long as 6 months after SDA introduction. The results are highly relevant in low-income countries like Rwanda, where quality of delivery care is challenged by a lack of in-service continuous training for healthcare providers.
