Abstract:Canada legalized the use of non-medical cannabis in 2018. This study examines youth and young adults' knowledge and perceptions of harms, benefits, and education around cannabis use since legalization. An online survey was completed by a convenience sample of 1,759 individuals aged 12-25 years living in Manitoba, Canada. Most participants (n = 1,525, 86.7%) reported receiving education on the potential effects/harms related to cannabis; the most common topics included driving and cannabis use (79.9%), the mental harms of cannabis (67.4%), and addiction and dependency (66.3%). Youth who reported using cannabis more than once (n = 1,203) were more knowledgeable about the effects of cannabis than youth who never used cannabis or used cannabis once (n = 580; mean score: 6.6 versus 5.7 out of 8, respectively; p < .001). Vaping cannabis oil was perceived as the most harmful cannabis product among all participants. Among participants with experience using cannabis, the most frequently reported benefits were relaxation, improved sleep, and enhanced enjoyment of food/music. Half of the participants reported ever being in a car with someone driving high, of which, 40% of these participants reported doing so in the last 30 days. Future tailored education is needed to address knowledge related to cannabis use among youth and young adults who use and do not use cannabis.
Perceived Risks and Therapeutic Benefits of Cannabis Among College Students Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract:More than half of the United States has legalized medicinal and/or recreational cannabis. The purpose of the study is to understand cannabis use and perceptions among college students with cannabis experience - 21 years and older - in a legalized cannabis state. Participants included 170 college students, the majority identified as female (72.9%, n = 124) and Latinx/Hispanic (55.9%, n = 95). The online survey included demographic questions and questionnaires measuring cannabis consumption, cannabis use disorder, and quality of life. Participants answered open-ended questions about the negative, positive, and spiritual impact/s of cannabis on their life and health, and how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted their cannabis use. A paired-sample t-test indicated participants significantly found more relief using cannabis compared to non-cannabis treatments or medications. There was no significant correlation between quality of life and cannabis use disorder symptoms. Inductive content analysis of 112 written responses revealed perceived negative effects (e.g., anxiety/mental health issues) and positive effects (e.g., relaxation/stress reduction) from using cannabis. Most participants reported no spiritual benefits; however, some participants discussed cannabis use improving connection to self and self-awareness. Regarding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on use, most participants (27.8%) reported increased cannabis use, while some reported decreased cannabis use. These findings reflect the importance of understanding the wide-range of benefits and risks perceived by college students who consume cannabis and how these results can inform the development of university prevention and wellness strategies within states that have legalized recreational and medical cannabis.

Abstract:Background: Cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive component of cannabis is marketed as a potential treatment for many conditions and widely available to purchase as a dietary supplement. In 2017, sales of CBD exceeded 820 million dollars despite many unconfirmed health claims, murky legality, and limited product efficacy and safety testing.Purpose/Objectives: This study aims to explore cannabidiol (CBD) knowledge, attitudes, and use among young adults.Methods: The anonymous 36-item survey developed using Qualtrics was distributed via social media from November 2018 to January 2019 with 340 respondents.Results: Of the 340 respondents, 242 reported they had heard of CBD, and 135 reported using CBD products. CBD users were primarily white, female, without children, made less than $25,000 per year, and unmarried. Most commonly used CBD products were edibles (56.30%), tinctures (54.07%), and vape (38.52%). Top reasons for use included stress relief (65.39%), relaxation (54.81%), and sleep improvement (42.22%). Many respondents reported using guesswork to determine dosage, and over half of respondents reported at least one unanticipated side effect.Conclusions/Importance: This study revealed that many users are not responsibly using CBD products, many believe CBD products provide health benefits that are not yet scientifically proven, and they are not knowledgeable about legal and regulatory issues. Until CBD use is more thoroughly researched and has more comprehensive regulation, public health professionals should address alternative stress and anxiety treatment methods.

Abstract:In recent decades, there has been a significant rise in the utilization of medical cannabis. Understanding the various facets surrounding its usage and regulation is paramount for patients, health professionals, and policymakers. This cross-sectional study conducted at the CANNAVITAL clinic in Lima, Peru aimed to assess the basic knowledge, attitudes towards use, and beliefs regarding regulation and safety of Cannabis sativa L. Among 86 patients (mean age: 41 ± 7.8 years; 53.4% women) actively receiving medical cannabis treatment for at least one year, we utilized the 22-item KUC-22 questionnaire to evaluate their understanding of cannabis, risk factors, legislation, medical and recreational use. The average duration of medical cannabis use was 3 ± 1.2 years. Results showed that 60.2% of patients were familiar with different forms of cannabis consumption, while 77.3% recognized the importance of product quality. Chronic pain, nausea and vomiting (each 23.9%) were the primary conditions treated with cannabis, followed by cancer and epilepsy (both 21.6%). A significant correlation was found between knowledge and cannabis use (p < 0.001). Furthermore, 92% of patients believed that a medical prescription was necessary, while 84.1% engaged in self-medication practices. Concerning perceptions, 69.3% of participants perceived psychological dependence from long-term cannabis use, and 65.9% believed it could cause health damage. Significant correlations were observed between the perception of risk factors, knowledge of legislation, and cannabis use (p < 0.001). In conclusion, Peruvian patients exhibited a high level of knowledge regarding the risks, uses, and regulatory framework surrounding Cannabis sativa L. These findings provide valuable insights into patients' perspectives on medical cannabis, offering important information for medical providers and researchers aiming to enhance cannabinoid-based therapies.

Abstract:L q -penalized regression arises in multidimensional statistical modelling where all or part of the regression coefficients are penalized to achieve both accuracy and parsimony of statistical models. There is often substantial computational difficulty except for the quadratic penalty case. The difficulty is partly due to the nonsmoothness of the objective function inherited from the use of the absolute value. We propose a new solution method for the general L q -penalized regression problem based on space transformation and thus efficient optimization algorithms. The new method has immediate applications in statistics, notably in penalized spline smoothing problems. In particular, the LASSO problem is shown to be polynomial time solvable. Numerical studies show promise of our approach.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to explore the perspectives of older medicinal cannabis consumers and those advising them on older Canadians' experiences accessing cannabis and information about it, as well as how stigma may influence their experiences. A concurrent triangulation mixed methods design was used. The design was qualitatively driven and involved conducting semi-structured interviews with older adults and advisors and developing a survey for older adults. We used a Qualitative Descriptive approach for the analysis of qualitative data and descriptive statistics for quantitative survey data. Findings demonstrate that many older adults are accessing information about cannabis for medical purposes from retailers, either because they are reticent to talk to their healthcare professionals or were rebuffed when bringing up the subject. We recommend cannabis education be required for healthcare professionals working with older persons and that future research examines their perspectives on medicinal cannabis and older adults.

Abstract:Objectives: Limited cannabis retail surveillance has been conducted, particularly assessing retailer practices in relation to consumer sociodemographic factors or use-related outcomes. This study examined young adults': exposure to promotions, health claims, warnings, and age restrictions at cannabis retailers; demographic correlates of retail exposures; and retail exposures in relation to use-related outcomes. Study design: This study used the cross-sectional quantitative analysis. Methods: We analyzed 2023 survey data among 876 young adults in states with legal non-medical cannabis, reporting past-month cannabis use and past-year retailer visits. Results: In this sample (Mage = 27.1, 44.1% male, 31.7% sexual minority, 17.7% Black, 11.2% Asian, 25.1% Hispanic), 46.7% "at least sometimes" noticed free samples, 76.5% price promotions, 37.4% subpopulation-targeted promotions; 72.5% health claims on products/ads, 63.1% signage, and 70.5% from budtenders; 72.5% warnings on labels, 65.5% signage, and 38.9% from budtenders; and > 80% age verifications. Multivariable analyses identified sociodemographic correlates of exposure outcomes: greater promotion exposure was associated with Black race; greater health claim exposure with being heterosexual, Black, and less educated; less warning exposure with less education; and less age restriction exposure with being younger, male, and Black. Retail exposures were associated with use-related outcomes: more frequent cannabis use was associated with less health claim exposure; greater perceived social acceptability with greater promotion and age restriction exposure; greater perceived risk with greater warning and less age restriction exposure; more problematic use and driving after use with greater promotion and less age restriction exposure. Conclusions: Cannabis retail exposure disparities and their associations with use-related outcomes highlight the importance of regulatory and prevention efforts.

Abstract:With the legalisation of cannabis products in Canada, there is a growing interest amongst youth in cannabis vaping products. This study aimed to explore the motivations behind the use of cannabis vaping products amongst youth and examine differences between frequent cannabis vapers and those who use other forms of cannabis. An online survey was conducted amongst youth aged 12–25 years. Descriptive statistics summarised responses separating youth who had frequently used (≥ weekly), occasionally used (< weekly to once per month), or did not use a cannabis vaping product in the past 12 months. A total of 1143 youth completed the study of which 830 (72.6%) had vaped cannabis in the past year, with most vaping cannabis oil (94.7%). Those who vaped weekly reported use of greater cannabis product diversity, higher tetrahydrocannabinol content, and increased spending compared to non-vapers. Vaping cannabis was perceived to be easier to conceal, had a faster onset of the high, and lacked odour in comparison to other cannabis products. Notably, 34.2% of youth who vaped considered flavour somewhat or very important in sustaining cannabis vaping use, with fruit flavours being the most popular. Youth from higher-income households and those using nicotine vaping devices were more likely to vape cannabis weekly (odds ratio: 1.83; 95% confidence intervals: 1.00–3.34 and 3.38, 1.99–5.73, respectively). Further research understanding why and how cannabis vaping products are used by youth is needed to understand potential harms associated with use as well as to create tailored education materials and messaging.

Abstract:Introduction Perceptions of cannabis as a potential medical treatment for mood and anxiety disorders have been increasing in the context of legalizations, availability, and medical cannabis programs, though current evidence predominately indicates risks and negative effects of cannabis use (CU) on mental health outcomes. This study aims to understand motivations, perceptions, effects, and patterns of CU in individuals with mood and anxiety disorders. Methods Thirty-six adult patients diagnosed with mood or anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or posttraumatic stress disorder who were currently using cannabis completed an in-depth qualitative interview on individual motivations, perceptions, experiences, effects, and patterns of their CU. The thematic analysis focused on phases of CU and sources of cannabis products and information. Results Reported motivations for initiation of CU included curiosity, peer pressure, and dissatisfaction with conventional treatments. Factors such as psychotropic effects and coping with mental health symptoms and insomnia contributed to the continuation of CU. More negative effects, including cognitive dysfunction, worsening of mood, and anxiety symptoms, were acknowledged with ongoing CU. Concerning findings included common initiation of CU before age 18, combined medical and recreational CU, rare consultation of medical professionals on CU, and potential effects and harms. Discussion Findings indicate individual complexity of motivations, perceptions, and patterns of CU in the study population. The reported potential beneficial effects of specific cannabis products should be further investigated. Findings emphasize patient-provider dialogue on both CU and conventional treatments. Information from this study can contribute to and inform the development of education, prevention, and intervention strategies. Abstract:Objective: To assess the perceptions and beliefs of adolescents about cannabis consumption, studying the incentive and disincentive factors for consumption. Method: A systematic review of the literature was carried out following the PRISMA guidelines. MedLine, Embase, APA PsycInfo, Cochrane and Web of Science were searched using controlled vocabulary and free terms. We included qualitative studies published between 2000 and 2024 that assessed the perceptions of adolescents aged 10 to 19 years on the use, effects, risks of using cannabis or cannabis with other legal drugs. The quality of the studies was assessed using the CASP tool. Results: Of the 3665 articles identified in the initial search, 22 complied with elegibility criteria. Data extraction yielded a series of three lines of argument linked to cannabis use: reasons for use, reasons for not using and perceived effects. The most common discourse among adolescents was related to the feeling of social and emotional well-being, fewer adverse effects than drugs, and the influence of peers on consumption. Conclusions: The review preformed reports on the reasons that adolescents allege for cannabis use and reasons for abstention with a view of the preponderance of benefits over harms. It is considered that this information may be necessary for the development of prevention programmes with the dissemination of information on the effects of consumption.

Abstract:Cannabis use is common among post-secondary students. As cannabis use becomes a normalized activity, there is potential for cultural change in post-secondary campuses. Exploring students' attitudes, beliefs, and perspectives can provide a better understanding of the evolution and cultural transformation of cannabis use on campus. This study took a meta-ethnographic approach to explore students' perception and attitudes about cannabis use. A database search and quality appraisal were used to identify relevant papers. Using the procedures of Noblit and Hare (1988), nine qualitative studies were synthesized to identify themes. Five themes emerged: "differences between users and non-users is negligible," "expectations of cannabis use are gendered," "cannabis use is influenced by sociocultural networks," "cannabis can be used responsibly or irresponsibly," and "perceived mediating factors in the relationship between students and cannabis use." The findings create an integral understanding of factors influencing students' cannabis use behaviors, informing future research on cannabis legalization.

Attitudes and Knowledge of Medical Students in South of Israel Toward Medical Cannabis

Abstract:Background: Public and medical interest in the use of cannabis has increased in Israel and the world over recent years. Study question: The aim of the study was to assess the attitudes of medical students from the Faculty of Health Sciences of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev on the use of medical cannabis. Study design: This is a cross-sectional study using a self-administered questionnaire completed by medical students from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Beer-Sheva, Israel. Measures and outcomes: Attitudes and knowledge toward the use of medical cannabis were evaluated. Results: A total of 243 medical students participated in the study. Of these, 111 (46.1%) were from preclinical years. The mean age was 27.31 ± 3.07, and 138 (57.3%) were female students. Most students (N = 193, 79.4%) agreed to a great degree or to a very great degree that there was a role for cannabis for medical purposes. Most students thought that medical cannabis should be recommended for use by pain specialists (N = 231, 95.1%), by oncologists (N = 208, 85.6%), and by psychiatrists (N = 192, 79%). A little more than half of the participants (N = 127, 52.5%) would agree to be licensed, as future physicians, to prescribe medical cannabis. A logistic regression analysis found that the students strongly agreed with legalization of medical cannabis and students who strongly agreed that medical cannabis should be in the health basket predicted a very strong agreement about its use (OR = 2.623, P ≤ 0.002, and OR = 3.285, P ≤ 0.001, respectively). Conclusions: Most medical students support the use of medical cannabis for medical purposes and are in favor of its legalization. As physicians of the future, it is important to assess the attitudes of medical students on medical cannabis.

Abstract:Objective: The Government of Canada legalized recreational cannabis use in October of 2018 with the implementation of the Cannabis Act. The act aimed to reduce the illicit cannabis market, improve consumer health outcomes, and reduce youth access to cannabis. However, little is known about the attitudes and behaviors of young adults, who have been shown to have a high prevalence of cannabis use, towards cannabis after legalization. Method: In this descriptive study, we examined cannabis use, attitudes, and purchasing preferences among Canadian university-attending young adults both before and after the legalization of cannabis. Participants were recruited from a large Canadian university from 2017 to 2021. Results: Our findings showed that there was an increase in cannabis use immediately following legalization that subsequently decreased in later years. Additionally, attitudes about the legalization of cannabis became more favorable in later years (following legalization), particularly among those who did not use cannabis. Most young adults were also keen to purchase cannabis from a government-owned store before legalization. However, with the exception of past-month consumers, this preference decreased substantially following legalization. Conclusions: The current research adds to the knowledge base about changes in cannabis-related attitudes and use after legalization and focuses on a key population - young adults.

Abstract:Journal of Adolescent Research, Ahead of Print. Attitudes toward cannabis in Canada are continually shifting, leaving youth vulnerable as they navigate the pre- to post-legalization context. Using the Youth Risk Interpretation (Y-RIF) conceptual framework, our research aimed to explore youth's interpretation of cannabis-related risks and gather insight into how this dynamic contextual shift influences their decisions. A qualitative study used a series of virtual focus groups with youth (N = 38; M = 15) living in urban and rural areas of Newfoundland and Labrador that were facilitated by young adults in 2021. An inductive thematic analysis approach was used to code all transcripts, and the identification of themes was informed by the Y-RIF. Our thematic analysis highlights the multitude of contextual factors (e.g., developmental, social, cultural, neurocognitive, geographical, and structural) that influence youths' perceptions of cannabis-related risks, which in turn impact their cannabis-related decisions. Youths' exposure to various circumstances, coupled with their internalization of contextual factors, interplay with cognitive processes, personal preferences, and agency. Consequently, this influenced how youth interpreted the risks associated with cannabis and their behaviors. Understanding youths' risk perception and underlying factors that contribute to unsafe decisions will inform targeted substance use and mental health literacy efforts for youth.

Abstract:Background: Young adults face unique vulnerabilities during major life disruptions like the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic contributed to increases in mental health challenges and substance use among young adults. This study explores the experiences of young adults who increased their cannabis use during the pandemic. Methods: Participants were recruited from the Nicotine Dependence in Teens (NDIT) study, and qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews conducted via Zoom. A total of 25 participants (ages 33-34) reporting increased cannabis use during the pandemic were included. Thematic analysis and gender-based analysis was employed to extract key themes. Results: Five themes emerged: (1) No disruption in cannabis use; (2) Cannabis use to manage declines in mental health; (3) Cannabis use to break up pandemic boredom; (4) Cannabis use as an expression of freedom; (5) Cannabis use as "another way to chill out." Conclusions: This research provides valuable perspectives on how major life disruptions, like the COVID-19 pandemic, influence cannabis use among young adults. The findings offer guidance for public health initiatives and highlight avenues for further investigation.
Changes in Sources of Information about the Risks and Benefits of Cannabis in a National Cohort of US Adults from 2017 - 2021

Abstract:Objective: As more states legalize cannabis in the US, marketing from the cannabis industry and news coverage of cannabis have increased. Sources of information on cannabis can influence beliefs about risks and benefits. Yet, little is known about how the use and influence of specific sources of information have changed over time. Method: We conducted a longitudinal study of 5053 US adults between 2017 and 2021. Participants were asked about sources of information on cannabis risks and benefits and which sources were most influential using a web-based survey at three different time points (2017, 2020, 2021). We evaluated changes in the use/influence of multiple sources of information from 2017 to 2021 and examined interactions with age, cannabis use and state cannabis legal status. Results: The largest increases in sources of information on cannabis benefits and risks were in use of health professionals (+5.5% for benefits and +17.4% for risks). The largest declines were in use of traditional media (TV, radio, newspapers) (-12.3% and -11.4%). Use of cannabis advertisements and dispensaries/other industry sources also significantly increased. Health professionals were the most influential source of information in all three waves regardless of age, cannabis use or state legal status. Conclusions: Participants sought information from different sources, and increasingly relied on health professionals as a primary source, highlighting the need to train healthcare providers about cannabis risks and benefits. While fewer people used traditional media, use of industry sources increased, underscoring the need for accurate cannabis information sources.
