Abstract:Objective: The objective is to evaluate and compare the antibacterial efficacy of nitrofurantoin, chitosan, and calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) in combination with propylene glycol (PG) as an intracanal medicament against endodontic pathogens. Materials and methods: Fifty-two extracted single-rooted maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth and premolars were selected. The root canals were enlarged using Protaper universal rotary files. Clinical isolates of microorganisms collected from retreatment cases were used. Bacterial isolates obtained from infected root canals were introduced into brain-heart infusion (BHI) broth. Incubation of samples for 14 days was carried out to facilitate the development of mature biofilms. Intracanal medicaments were divided into four groups: Group 1 - Nirofurantoin+20% PG, Group 2 - Chitosan+20% PG, Group 3 - Ca(OH)2 + 20% PG, and Group 4 - 20% PG. The prepared root samples were incubated for 7 days. After collecting dentin samples, they were placed in a phosphate-buffered saline solution. Serial dilutions were then performed, and each dilution was plated on BHI agar. The plates were incubated for 24 h at 37°C. The antibacterial efficacy was assessed by calculating the percentage of remaining colony-forming units. Results: Antibacterial efficacy of chitosan paste was significantly higher followed by nitrofurantoin as compared to other groups when used as an intracanal medicament. Conclusions: In the root-canal biofilm model, the combination of chitosan and PG demonstrated a significant reduction in the viability of endodontic pathogens when employed as intracanal medication for 7 days. This suggests its potential as an effective intracanal medicament for endodontic retreatment.

Abstract:Intracanal medicaments are an important adjunct to the effective disinfection of the root canal system. However, conventional intracanal medicaments do not provide adequate protection against Enterococcus faecalis, which is the organism of interest in many cases of root canal failures. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of biosynthesized calcium oxide nanoparticles (CaO NPs) on the antibacterial activity, pH, microleakage and cytotoxicity of intracanal medicaments. CaO NPs were biosynthesized by the direct thermal decomposition of eggshells (EGS) and the reduction of calcium nitrate with papaya leaf extract (PLE). These nanoparticles were mixed with a proprietary calcium hydroxide powder in 10% and 25% (w/w) concentrations and blended in analytical-grade coconut oil to formulate the experimental medicaments. These were then evaluated for antibacterial activity, pH, microleakage and cytotoxicity at 1 day, 7 days and 15 days. A proprietary calcium hydroxide paste formulation (MX) was used as the control. Means and standard deviations were calculated and analyzed using repeated-measures ANOVA for pH and three-way ANOVA for the antibacterial effect, microleakage and cytotoxicity, followed by LSD post hoc analysis. Significant antibacterial activity was noted against Enterococcus faecalis at all times, with zones of inhibition (ZOI) up to 19.60 ± 2.30 mm. pH levels up to 13.13 ± 0.35 were observed for the experimental groups. Microleakage remained comparable to the control, while cytotoxicity was not observed in any of the groups at any time. Intracanal medicaments formulated with 10% and 25% (w/w) of biosynthesized CaO NPs could be promising candidates for the disinfection of the root canal system compared to conventional counterparts.

Abstract:Background: In root canal disinfection, intracanal medicaments play a vital role. Typical intracanal medicament, calcium hydroxide (CH), has the lowest efficacy against the biofilm of Enterococcus faecalis. Nanoparticles and their combinations may increase antimicrobial activity, making them better than conventional CH. Aim: The aim is to determine the efficacy of nanoparticle CH (NPCH) and silver nanoparticles (AgNP) against E. faecalis. Materials and Methods: A total of 60 premolars were chosen. The samples were cleaned and decoronated. Cleaning and shaping were done. The apices were tightly sealed with modeling wax before being injected with 5 μl of E. faecalis (ATCC 29212) bacterial suspension, and then left to incubate. Samples were categorized into CH (G-I), NPCH (G-II), AgNP (G-III), and a combination of NPCH + AgNP (G-IV) according to the intracanal medication used. Eppendorf tubes were used to transfer dentin chips after they had been incubated for 7 days. The process of obtaining bacterial colony-forming units (CFUs) involves inoculating sediments onto blood agar. Results: The findings are statistically significant, number of CFUs seen with the Combination of NPCH + AgNP is lower than the other experimental groups, the group treated with CH had the largest number of CFUs. Conclusions: The highest antibacterial effect was seen in combination of NPCH + AgNP.

Abstract:Introduction: This study investigated the effect of a calcium hydroxide (CH) paste (CleaniCal®) containing N-2-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP) as a vehicle on Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) biofilms compared with other products containing saline (Calasept Plus™) or propylene glycol (PG) (Calcipex II®). Methodology: Standardized bovine root canal specimens were used. The antibacterial effects were measured by colony-forming unit counting. The thickness of bacterial microcolonies and exopolysaccharides was assessed using confocal laser scanning microscopy. Morphological features of the biofilms were observed using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). Bovine tooth blocks covered with nail polish were immersed into the vehicles and dispelling was observed. The data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and Tukey tests (p<0.05). Results: CleaniCal® showed the highest antibacterial activity, followed by Calcipex II® (p<0.05). Moreover, NMP showed a higher antibacterial effect compared with PG (p<0.05). The thickness of bacteria and EPS in the CleaniCal® group was significantly lower than that of other materials tested (p<0.05). FE-SEM images showed the specimens treated with Calasept Plus™ were covered with biofilms, whereas the specimens treated with other medicaments were not. Notably, the specimen treated with CleaniCal® was cleaner than the one treated with Calcipex II®. Furthermore, the nail polish on the bovine tooth block immersed in NMP was completely dispelled. Conclusions: CleaniCal® performed better than Calasept Plus™ and Calcipex II® in the removal efficacy of E. faecalis biofilms. The results suggest the effect might be due to the potent dissolving effect of NMP on organic substances.

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the solubility, pH, antimicrobial action, and cytotoxicity of ambroxol hydrochloride (AMB), N-acetylcysteine (NAC), and calcium hydroxide (CH) pastes for use as intracanal medications. Methods Solubility was determined by micro-CT, based on the paste volume remaining after immersion in water for 7 days. pH was measured by immersing acrylic tubes containing the pastes in ultrapure water and then measuring pH after 3 hours, 3 days, and 7 days. Antimicrobial action against Enterococcus faecalis was assessed based on the percentage of living cells, using the live/dead staining method under confocal microscopy. Cytotoxicity was assessed based on the cell viability of L929 fibroblast-like cells after 6, 24, and 48 hours. Cytotoxicity data were compared using the ANOVA and Tukey tests, and the antimicrobial data were compared using the Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests. The significance level used was 5% (α=0.05). Results The solubility values for all the study groups were significantly different (P<0.05), where the highest values were for NAC, followed by AMB, and then CH. Likewise, the pH levels were all significantly different (P<0.05), where NAC and AMB levels were acidic, and CH levels were alkaline. The antimicrobial action of AMB was significantly higher than that of CH (P<0.05), and that of NAC was also higher than that of CH, albeit not significantly. AMB and NAC were more cytotoxic than CH, and higher dilutions of CH promoted higher cell viability levels than lower dilutions of the same paste (P<0.05). Conclusion: The NAC and AMB pastes were more soluble and cytotoxic than the CH paste and had acidic pH levels. The AMB paste displayed the highest antimicrobial action against Enterococcus faecalis biofilm.

Abstract:Abstract Background The successful outcome of endodontic treatment depends on controlling the intra-radicular microbial biofilm by effective instrumentation and disinfection using various irrigants and intracanal medicaments. Instrumentation alone cannot effectively debride the root canals specially due to the complex morphology of the root canal system. A number of antibiotics and surfactants are being widely used in the treatment of biofilms however, the current trend is towards identification of natural products in disinfection. The aim of the study was to determine the antibacterial effect of chitosan-propolis nanoparticle (CPN) as an intracanal medicament against Enterococcus faecalis biofilm in root canal. Methods 240 extracted human teeth were sectioned to obtain 6 mm of the middle third of the root. The root canal was enlarged to an internal diameter of 0.9 mm. The specimens were inoculated with E. faecalis for 21 days. Following this, specimens were randomly divided into eight groups ( n = 30 ) according to the intracanal medicament placed: group I: saline, group II: chitosan, group III: propolis100 μg/ml (P100), group IV: propolis 250 μg/ml (P250), group V: chitosan-propolis nanoparticle 100 μg/ml (CPN100), group VI: chitosan-propolis nanoparticle 250 μg/ml (CPN250), group VII: calcium hydroxide(CH) and group VIII: 2% chlorhexidine (CHX) gel. Dentine shavings were collected at 200 and 400 μm depths, and total numbers of CFUs were determined at the end of day one, three and seven. The non-parametric Kruskal Wallis and Mann–Whitney tests were used to compare the differences in reduction of CFUs between all groups and probability values of p < 0.05 were set as the reference for statistically significant results. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) were also performed after exposure to CPNs. The effectiveness of CPNs were also evaluated against E. faecalis isolated obtained from patients having failed root canal treatment. Results The treatments of chitosan, P100, P250, CPN100, CPN250, CH and 2% CHX reduced the CFUs significantly compared to saline (p < .05). On day one and three, at 200 and 400-μm, CPN250 showed significant reduction of CFUs compared to all other groups (p < .05), while CPN100 was significantly better than other groups (p < .05) except CPN250 and 2% CHX. On day seven, at 200-μm CPN250 showed significant reduction of CFUs compared to all other groups (p < .05) except CPN100 and CHX, while at 400 μm CPN250 showed similar effectiveness as CPN100, CH and 2% CHX. SEM images showed root canal dentin treated with CPN250 had less coverage with E. faecalis bacteria similarly, CLSM images also showed higher percentage of dead E. faecalis bacteria with CPN250 than to CPN100. Conclusion CPN250 was the most effective in reducing E. faecalis colonies on day one, three at both depths and at day seven CPN250 was equally effective as CPN100 and 2% CHX.

Abstract:Aim: The aim of this in vitro study was to compare the antimicrobial effect of double antibiotic paste with that of bromelain and calcium hydroxide in eradication of E. faecalis. Hypothesis: we hypothesized that Bromelain may act as an intracanal medicament. Materials and methods: For this study, 40 extracted human teeth were used. After their decapitation, they were initially instrumented to reach 20 K-file, later they were separated into one control and three experimental groups (n=10) according to the medicament used; Group 1: Bromelain paste, Group 2: Control group, canals were left without any medicament, Group 3: Calcium hydroxide (CH)and Group 4: Double antibiotic paste (DAP). Preparation of all samples was done using Step- back technique to reach #50 file, irrigation using sodium hypochlorite solution of 2.6% concentration and EDTA, then intracanal medicaments were applied. First sample (S1) was collected after inoculation of bacteria into root canals. Second sample (S2) was collected after undergoing instrumentation and irrigation. Third sample (S3) was taken following application of medicament. Sterile cotton pellet and temporary restoration were then applied for seven days. Broth Heart Infusion (BHI) agar was used for culturing of samples then went under incubation to count Colony Forming Unit (CFU's). Results: Regarding S1 samples (after inoculation of bacteria) and S2 (after undergoing instrumentation and irrigation). In all groups, there was no statistically significant difference between them. While S 3 samples showed statistically significant difference in all groups. S3 Samples in Bromelain group showed the least statistically significant bacterial count followed by double antibiotic paste then calcium hydroxide group while S3 samples in negative control group showed the highest statistically significant bacterial count. Conclusion: Bromelain was found as an effective herbal intracanal medicament as it gives superior antimicrobial property compared to other intracanal medicaments. Clinical significance: Intracanal medicament from herbal sources like Bromelain is recommended for root canal disinfection as it has a promising effect with less side effect compared with other intracanal medicaments.
Intracanal antibacterial effects of a bioceramic medication compared with calcium hydroxide pastes in different vehicles

Abstract:Introduction The intracanal antibacterial effectiveness of a bioceramic medication was compared with calcium hydroxide pastes in different vehicles. Methods Extracted mandibular incisors with a single long oval canal were selected and distributed into 5 groups based on anatomically paired micro-computed tomographic analyses. The root canals were prepared up to an instrument size 35/04 and contaminated for 30 days with a mixed bacterial culture from subgingival biofilm added with Enterococcus faecalis. The canals were medicated with Bio-C Temp (Angelus Indústria de Produtos Odontológicos, Londrina, PR, Brazil) or a calcium hydroxide paste in glycerin (CHG), camphorated paramonochlorophenol/ glycerin (CHPG), or 2% chlorhexidine (CHCX). Control specimens were filled with sterile saline. After 7 days, the medication was removed by using rotary instruments and saline irrigation. A supplementary approach was conducted, which consisted of 2.5% NaOCl irrigation and agitation with XP-endo Finisher. Bacteriological samples were taken before application (S1) and after removal (S2) of the intracanal medication, and after the supplementary approach (S3). Bacterial DNA extracted from the samples was quantified using real-time polymerase chain reaction. Results Bacterial counts were significantly reduced from S1 to S2 in all groups, except for the control group. As for S1-to-S3 changes, all groups (control included) showed significant bacterial reduction. S2-to-S3 changes were only significant in the CHPG and CHCX groups (p 0.05), with all medications significantly better than the control (p 0.05). Conclusion All tested medications significantly reduced the intracanal bacterial counts, with no significant differences between them. Final NaOCl irrigation and agitation using XP-endo Finisher further enhanced disinfection in the CHCX and CHPG groups.

Abstract:These coincidences caught Zoghbi’s attention at first, but her desire to help Rett syndrome patients and their families exerted lasting effects on her career. Two years after first encountering patients with this disorder, Zoghbi sidelined her clinical career and formally trained as a researcher in genetics in the hopes of understanding the causes of diseases like Rett syndrome. Nearly 20 years later, in 2004, she was elected to the National Academy of Sciences for her research on the molecular genetics of neurological disorders, including her 1999 discovery of the gene responsible for Rett syndrome. Zoghbi’s Inaugural Article (2), published in a recent issue of PNAS, continues her explorations of the disease’s mechanisms.
Comparative evaluation of the antibacterial efficacy of two experimental calcium silicate-based intracanal medicaments: An in-vitro study

Abstract:Abstract Introduction: Success of endodontic treatment relies on minimizing microbial load by chemo-mechanical preparation and intra-canal medication(ICM). Calcium hydroxide based ICMs have known disadvantages. Calcium silicate-based cements(CSC) exhibit antibacterial activity, thus promoting researchers to experiment with their formulations to use them as ICMs. Aim: Evaluation and comparison of the antimicrobial efficacy of two experimental CSC (MTA & Biodentine + 2%chlorhexidine) and Bio-C Temp against E.faecalis. Methods and Material: Test materials were divided into four groups namely Group1-Bio-C Temp, Group2-UltraCAL XS, Group3-Biodentine+2%CHX and Group4-MTA+2%CHX. Direct contact test was done by placing a standardized suspension of E.faecalis on test materials and bacterial growth was assessed spectrophotometrically using ELISA at one, three and seven days. Statistical Analysis: Data was analysed using one-way ANOVA, Tukey’s multiple post hoc test and paired-t test. Results: Intragroup comparison revealed decreased mean optical density(OD) in groups 1, 2, and 4; no significant difference in group 3. Intergroup comparison showed statistical differences in mean OD values between groups (3 and 4); groups (1 and 2) at days one(p-0.018) and three(p-0.035), but no difference individually. Group 4 showed the highest antimicrobial efficacy on day seven. Conclusion: MTA+2%CHX & Biodentine+2%CHX showed better antimicrobial efficacy and hence could be used as potential ICMs.
Antifungal Effectiveness of Various Intracanal Medicaments against Candida albicans: An In Vitro Study

Abstract:Aim and objective: To evaluate the antifungal efficiency of various intracanal medicaments against Candida albicans. Materials and methods: One-hundred and forty extracted human mandibular premolar teeth were decoronated, and the biomechanical preparation was done in crown-down technique. 10 μL culture suspension of C. albicans was placed into the prepared root canal space of all the teeth. After 21 days of incubation, all the teeth were randomly divided into 7 groups with 20 teeth per each group. Group I: triple antibiotic powder (TAP) mixed with 3% chitosan solution; group II: TAP mixed with macrogol-propylene (MP) glycol; group III: chlorhexidine-guttapercha (CHX-GP); group IV: Vitapex; group V: 2% chlorhexidine gel; group VI: calcium hydroxide paste; group VII: normal saline with cotton (positive control) were used as intracanal medicaments, and the samples were incubated for 14 days. Intracanal medicaments were then completely removed using the canal brush. Dentinal chips were harvested from the walls of the root canal space in all samples using Gates-Glidden drills, were transferred into test tubes containing saline, and were serially diluted and placed in 140 Sabouraud dextrose agar plates, incubated at 37°C for 48 hours. Colony forming units (CFUs) of C. albicans were then counted using the digital colony counter. Results: One-way ANOVA test showed statistically significant difference among the seven groups, as the p value was < 0.001. Tukey's post hoc test showed intergroup comparison between group I and group V; group II and group III were statistically nonsignificant as p value was >0.05. Conclusion: 2% chlorhexidine gel and TAP mixed with 3% chitosan solution showed superior antifungal efficiency against C. albicans. Clinical significance: Chitosan solution's inherent antifungal efficiency and slow and controlled drug release make it as an effective alternate carrier in mixing it with TAP instead of mixing TAP with MP.
Antibacterial Activity of Sodium Hypochlorite Gel versus Different Types of Root Canal Medicaments Using Agar Diffusion Test: An In Vitro Comparative Study

Abstract:Aim. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial effect of sodium hypochlorite gel and four types of intracanal medicaments. Materials and Methods. The agar diffusion method was used to evaluate the antibacterial effect of five medicaments (sodium hypochlorite gel (NaOCl), chlorhexidine gel (CHX), calcium hydroxide paste (CH), Ledermix, and Diapex plus) against Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis), Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), and Escherichia coli (E. coli). The zone of inhibition around each medicament was measured in millimeters, after 48 hours of incubation at 37°C. The antibacterial effects of medicaments against each microbial strain and the sensitivity of microorganisms towards each medicament were compared using the one-way ANOVA and Games–Howell post hoc tests. The level of significance was set to p < 0.05 . Results. All medicaments showed variable inhibition zones for all bacterial strains except Diapex Plus which showed no antibacterial activity. NaOCl gel exhibited the most significant inhibition zones for all bacterial strains followed by CHX gel, Ledermix, and CH. However, the effect of CHX and CH paste against S. aureus was statistically similar, while the effect of CH against E. faecalis was significantly higher than the Ledermix. Conclusion. Sodium hypochlorite gel displayed the highest antibacterial activity among tested medicaments and can be recommended as a potent intracanal medicament. Chlorhexidine gel showed a significantly higher antibacterial effect when compared with Ledermix and calcium hydroxide. Calcium hydroxide demonstrated stronger antibacterial activity against E. faecalis than Ledermix. Diapex Plus exhibited no antibacterial effect.

Abstract:Enterococcus faecalis and Candida albicans are frequently found in persistent endodontic infection and could remain in dentinal tubules despite intracanal medication with calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH) 2 ), a commonly used medication. Thus, an effective and safe antimicrobial medication against such refractory infection is necessary in endodontic retreatment, so we aimed to test the efficacy of chitosan paste against these microorganisms compared with Ca(OH) 2 in root canals of extracted human teeth.

Abstract:Abstract Objective: Many studies suggest that age at onset (AAO) is an important factor for clinically differentiating patients with juvenile and adult onset of obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD). The present international study aimed to assess the prevalence of different AAO groups and compare related socio-demographic and clinical features in a large sample of OCD patients. Methods: A total of 431 OCD outpatients, participating in the ICOCS network, were first categorised in groups with childhood (≤12 years), adolescent (13–17 years) and adult-onset (≥18 years), then in pre-adult and adult onset (≥18 years) and their socio-demographic and clinical features compared. Results: Twenty-one percent (n = 92) of the sample reported childhood onset, 36% (n = 155) adolescent onset, and 43% (n = 184) adult onset. Patients with adult onset showed a significantly higher proportion of females compared with the other subgroups (χ2 = 10.9, p< 0.05). Childhood- and adolescent-onset patients had been more frequently treated with cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), compared to adult-onset patients (χ2 = 11.5; p < 0.05). The pre-adult- versus adult-onset analysis did not show any additional significant difference. Conclusions: The present international multicentre study confirms that OCD onset occurs more frequently before adult age, with approximately one out of five patients showing childhood onset. Pre-adult onset was associated with higher rate of CBT, while adult onset was more prevalent in females.
Effect of Novel and Traditional Intracanal Medicaments on Biofilm Viability and Composition

Abstract:Introduction: The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that a combination of D-amino acids (DAAs) and trans-cinnamaldehyde (TC) demonstrates superior antibiofilm activity to calcium hydroxide (CH) and untreated controls. Methods: In this 3-part in vitro study, the concentration of DAAs (D-methionine, D-leucine, D-tyrosine, and D-tryptophan) that would significantly decrease Enterococcus faecalis and Actinomyces naeslundii biofilm biomass was first determined. Then, the effect of TC + selected DAAs on polymicrobial biofilms was characterized by quantifying the biomass and biofilm viability. Finally, the antibiofilm effects of TC + DAA was compared with CH and untreated controls by (i) determining bacterial viability and (ii) quantifying biofilm matrix composition using selective fluorescence-binding analysis. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA and appropriate multiple comparisons test, with P < .05 considered as statistically significant. Results: TC (0.06%) + D-tyrosine (1 mM) + D-tryptophan (25 mM) significantly reduced the biomass and biofilm viability compared to the control (P < .05). While no significant difference was observed between TC + DAA and CH in the cultivable bacterial counts (P > .05), confocal microscopy demonstrated a significantly greater percentage of dead bacteria in TC + DAA-treated biofilms compared to CH and the control (P < .05). TC + DAA significantly decreased the biovolume and all the examined components of the biofilm matrix quantity compared to the control, while CH significantly reduced only the exopolysaccharide quantity (P < .05). Conclusion: The combination of TC + D-tyrosine + D-tryptophan demonstrated superior antibiofilm activity (biofilm bacterial killing and reduction of matrix quantity) to CH and has potential to be developed as an intracanal medicament.

Abstract:Gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) is a common problem among Asian ethnics. A total of 102 women with molar pregnancies between 1 January 2005 and 31 December 2010, were analysed. The aim of the study was to determine the outcome of all molar pregnancies in our institution. The local incidence of molar pregnancy was 2.6 per 1,000 deliveries. A total of 48 women (47.1%) had complete hydatidiform mole and another 54 (52.9%) had partial mole. The mean age of the women with molar pregnancies was 32.0 ± 7.9 years. The mean gestational age at initial diagnosis was 11 weeks ± 3 days. The majority (97 women, 95.1%) had symptoms of vaginal bleeding and 18 (17.6%) women had a uterus larger than dates. A total of 48 (47.1%) women had ultrasound scan findings of ‘snow-storm’ appearance. None of the women with uncomplicated molar pregnancy had evidence of relapse following one undetectable serum β-hCG level. Four out of the 102 women (3.9%) developed persistent trophoblastic disease before attaining one undetectable serum β-hCG level. All four women required single agent methotrexate and they remained in remission. The prognosis for uncomplicated molar pregnancy is good. Establishment of a National Trophoblastic Centre is recommended to maintain optimal outcome.
Antibacterial and Antibiofilm Efficacy of Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy Against Intracanal Enterococcus faecalis: An In Vitro Comparative Study with Traditional Endodontic Irrigation Solutions

Abstract:Objectives: Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis), an infecting microorganism of the root canals, is difficult to eliminate during endodontic therapy. In this study, the effect of root canal disinfection with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and chlorhexidine (CHX) was evaluated on planktonic and biofilm forms of E. faecalis in comparison with antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) as an alternative strategy for root canal disinfection. Materials and Methods: In this study, E. faecalis (ATCC 29212) was used. The experimental procedures included aPDT with curcumin (CUR) and indocyanine green (ICG) as photosensitizers, irrigation with 5.25% NaOCl, 0.2% and 2.0% CHX solutions as traditional endodontic irrigating solutions, and the control group. The antibacterial and anti-biofilm potentials were assessed by counting the colony forming units and also using the crystal violet assay, respectively. Results: According to the results, E. faecalis biofilm was disrupted by 65.3%, 81.0% and 92.6% using 0.2% CHX, 2.0% CHX, and 5.25% NaOCl, respectively (P<0.05). In addition, CUR- and ICG-mediated aPDT displayed a significant reduction in E. faecalis count (90.2% and 82.5%, respectively) and its biofilm (83.6% and 75.2%, respectively) in comparison to the control group (P<0.05). Conclusions: APDT has a high potential for elimination of E. faecalis and is almost equivalent to NaOCl and CHX. It can be used as an adjucnt to conventional endodontic irrigating solutions.
