Abstract:Magnetically actuated mobile microrobots can access distant, enclosed, and small spaces, such as inside microfluidic channels and the human body, making them appealing for minimally invasive tasks. Despite their simplicity when scaling down, creating collective microrobots that can work closely and cooperatively, as well as reconfigure their formations for different tasks, would significantly enhance their capabilities such as manipulation of objects. However, a challenge of realizing such cooperative magnetic microrobots is to program and reconfigure their formations and collective motions with under-actuated control signals. This article presents a method of controlling 2D static and time-varying formations among collective self-repelling ferromagnetic microrobots (100 [Formula: see text]m to 350 [Formula: see text]m in diameter, up to 260 in number) by spatially and temporally programming an external magnetic potential energy distribution at the air–water interface or on solid surfaces. A general design method is introduced to program external magnetic potential energy using ferromagnets. A predictive model of the collective system is also presented to predict the formation and guide the design procedure. With the proposed method, versatile complex static formations are experimentally demonstrated and the programmability and scaling effects of formations are analyzed. We also demonstrate the collective mobility of these magnetic microrobots by controlling them to exhibit bio-inspired collective behaviors such as aggregation, directional motion with arbitrary swarm headings, and rotational swarming motion. Finally, the functions of the produced microrobotic swarm are demonstrated by controlling them to navigate through cluttered environments and complete reconfigurable cooperative manipulation tasks.
Programmable collective behavior in dynamically self-assembled mobile microrobotic swarms

Abstract:Collective control of mobile microrobotic swarms is indispensable for their potential high-impact applications in targeted drug delivery, medical diagnostics, parallel micromanipulation, and environmental sensing and remediation. Lack of on-board computational and sensing capabilities in current microrobotic systems necessitates use of physical interactions among individual microrobots for local physical communication and cooperation. Here, we show that mobile microrobotic swarms with well-defined collective behavior can be designed by engineering magnetic interactions among individual units. Microrobots, consisting of a linear chain of self-assembled magnetic microparticles, locomote on surfaces in response to a precessing magnetic field. Control over the direction of precessing magnetic field allows engineering attractive and repulsive interactions among microrobots and, thus, collective order with well-defined spatial organization and parallel operation over macroscale distances (~1 cm). These microrobotic swarms can be guided through confined spaces, while preserving microrobot morphology and function. These swarms can further achieve directional transport of large cargoes on surfaces and small cargoes in bulk fluids. Described design approach, exploiting physical interactions among individual robots, enables facile and rapid formation of self-organized and reconfigurable microrobotic swarms with programmable collective order.

Abstract:A hybrid electromagnetic actuation system is developed to dynamically control the global and local magnetic field distributions, facilitating the precise manipulation of multiple microrobots with synchronized and differentiated motion profiles. This advanced technology offers significant advantages for applications such as non‐contact particle manipulation, targeted drug delivery, and efficient micromixing, highlighting its potential for breakthroughs in biomedical and industrial fields. Magnetic microrobots are controlled to exhibit a wide range of motions, allowing them to navigate complex environments and perform multifunctional tasks with high precision. This work presents a novel hybrid electromagnetic actuation system by integrating two distinct conventional configurations, such as a paired‐coils electromagnetic disc (EMD) system and a distributed electromagnetic array coil (EAC) system. In order to ensure the effective functioning of the microrobot, its motion dynamics are thoroughly analyzed to identify the critical kinetic parameters. For demonstration purposes, first, a mixing task is performed by employing a single microrobot actuated with simultaneous motions. The mixing efficiency is observed to reach 83% within 30 s, in contrast to the efficiency of control of 45%. Second, a structural reconfiguration function is demonstrated by employing an independent control of two U‐shaped microrobots to form a new I‐shaped microrobot. Last, differentiated motion control of multiple magnetic pads is demonstrated, resulting in various 2D static formations in the shapes of numbers and alphabets. The presented results hold great promise for advancing the field of microrobotics by offering a novel solution for versatile microrobot motion controls.

Towards Independent Control of Multiple Magnetic Mobile Microrobots

Abstract:In this paper, we have developed an approach for independent autonomous navigation of multiple microrobots under the influence of magnetic fields and validated it experimentally. We first developed a heuristics based planning algorithm for generating collision-free trajectories for the microrobots that are suitable to be executed by an available magnetic field. Second, we have modeled the dynamics of the microrobots to develop a controller for determining the forces that need to be generated for the navigation of the robots along the trajectories at a suitable control frequency. Next, an optimization routine is developed to determine the input currents to the electromagnetic coils that can generate the required forces for the navigation of the robots at the controller frequency. We then validated our approach by simulating an electromagnetic system that contains an array of sixty-four magnetic microcoils designed for generating local magnetic fields suitable for simultaneous independent actuation of multiple microrobots. Finally, we prototyped an m m -scale version of the system and present experimental results showing the validity of our approach.

Abstract:Abstract Swarms of soft microrobots controlled by minimally invasive magnetic fields show promise as biomedical agents. The collective behaviour of such swarms, governed by magnetic and hydrodynamic interactions, emerges from the properties of their individual constituents. The introduction of both magnetic and structural anisotropy into microrobots expands the possibilities for tailoring and predetermining interactions and collective behaviours that result. Unfortunately, current methods for large-scale production of soft microrobots, typically result in isotropic properties. Herein, by combining simulation-guided design and droplet-based microfluidics, we present a versatile, high-throughput technique for fabricating soft microrobots with programmable structural and magnetic anisotropy. Such microrobots consist of iron oxide nanoparticles organized into supra-domain structures and entrapped in a hydrogel matrix that can be elongated independently of its magnetic properties. By applying rotating magnetic fields to resulting swarms, distinct collective behaviours are produced, including gas-like formations, variable crystals, and heterogeneous motions.

Abstract:Inspired by the biological collective behaviors of nature, artificial microrobotic swarms have exhibited environmental adaptability and tasking capabilities for biomedicine and micromanipulation. Complex environments are extremely relevant to the applications of microswarms, which are expected to travel in blood vessels, reproductive and digestive tracts, and microfluidic chips. Here we present a strategy that reconfigures paramagnetic nanoparticles into a vector-controlled microswarm with 3D collective motions by programming sawtooth magnetic fields. Horizontal swarms can be manipulated to stand vertically and swim like a wheel by adjusting the direction of magnetic-field plane. Compared with horizontal swarms, vertical wheel-like swarms were evaluated to be of approximately 15-fold speed increase and enhanced maneuverability, which was exhibited by striding across complex 3D confinements. Based on analysis of collective behavior of magnetic particles in flow field using molecular dynamics methods, a rotary stepping mechanism was proposed to address the formation and locomotion mechanisms of wheel-like swarm. we present a strategy that actuates swarms to stand and hover in situ under a programming swing magnetic fields, which provides suitable solutions to travel across confined space with unexpected changes, such as stepped pipes. By biomimetic design from fin motion of fish, wheel-like swarms were endowed with multi-modal locomotion and load-carrying capabilities. This design of intelligent microswarms that adapt to complicated biological environments can promote the applications ranging from the construction of smart and multifunctional materials to biomedical engineering.

Abstract:Magnetically actuated nanoparticle microrobots have great potential for biomedical applications, especially in blood vessels. However, they face a complex bifurcation environment, and magnetic control strategies targeting a single pathway limit the operational efficiency of the targeting task. In this letter, we propose a cooperative control strategy of magnetic microrobots in bifurcated microfluidic channels. A nanoparticle microrobot can be disassembled into two by a dynamic magnetic field. The microrobot with a length of 3 mm needs to set the rotation frequency of the magnetic field to about 1.7 Hz. The velocity of the microrobot in the microfluidic channel is inversely proportional to the angle of contact between it and the microfluidic wall. Take advantage of this velocity property, a cooperative control strategy based on environmental heterogeneity to control the horizontal distance difference between two sub-microrobots is proposed. The control strategy is experimentally verified in 2-D space with an error within 1 mm. The integrated tasks of disassembly, cooperative control and reassembly are completed. This letter also discusses how this strategy could be extended to 3-D and arbitrarily shaped microfluidic channels.

Abstract:Due to the unique advantages of untethered connections and a high level of safety, magnetic actuation is a commonly used technique in microrobotics for propelling microswimmers, manipulating fluidics, and navigating medical devices. However, the microrobots or actuated targets are exposed to identical and homogeneous driving magnetic fields, which makes it challenging to selectively control a single robot or a specific group among multiple targets. This paper reviews recent advances in selective and independent control for multi-microrobot or multi-joint microrobot systems driven by magnetic fields. These selective and independent control approaches decode the global magnetic field into specific configurations for the individualized actuation of multiple microrobots. The methods include applying distinct properties for each microrobot or creating heterogeneous magnetic fields at different locations. Independent control of the selected targets enables the effective cooperation of multiple microrobots to accomplish more complicated operations. In this review, we provide a unique perspective to explain how to manipulate individual microrobots to achieve a high level of group intelligence on a small scale, which could help accelerate the translational development of microrobotic technology for real-life applications.

Abstract:Reconfigurable microrobotic swarms and controllable active matter systems have drawn extensive attention recently. Developing effective actuation strategies and control schemes that enable embodied intelligence of microscopic swarms are both major challenges. In this work, we realize the generation of an elliptical paramagnetic nanoparticle swarm (EPNS) with enhanced dexterity for adaptive locomotion, and subsequently a fuzzy control strategy is developed for automatically tuning pattern deformation, orientation, and position of the swarm. By adjusting the input field, the aspect ratio of the EPNS will change accordingly, and we demonstrate its adaptive navigation through curved and narrowed channel by performing pattern reconfigurations. Moreover, using the proposed control strategy, precise matches can be reached between the controlled swarms and the desired patterns. Finally, to show the high compatibility of the control strategy, we employ ribbon-like colloidal swarms driven by oscillating magnetic field, and the results also validate the effectiveness of the strategy.

Abstract:Magnetic microrobots that swim through liquid media are of interest for minimally invasive medical procedures, bioengineering, and manufacturing. Many of the envisaged applications, such as micromanipulation and targeted cargo delivery, necessitate the use and adequate control of multiple microrobots, which will increase the velocity, robustness, and efficacy of a procedure. While various methods involving heterogeneous geometries, magnetic properties, and surface chemistries have been proposed to enhance independent control, the main challenge has been that the motion between all microwsimmers remains coupled through the global control signal of the magnetic field. Katsamba and Lauga proposed transchiral microrobots, a theoretical design with magnetized spirals of opposite handedness. The competition between the spirals can be tuned to give an intrinsic nonlinearity that each device can function only within a given band of frequencies. This allows individual microrobots to be selectively controlled by varying the frequency of the rotating magnetic field. Here we present the experimental realization and characterization of transchiral micromotors composed of independently driven magnetic helices. We show a swimming micromotor that yields negligible net motion until a critical frequency is reached and a micromotor that changes its translation direction as a function of the frequency of the rotating magnetic field. This work demonstrates a crucial step towards completely decoupled and addressable swimming magnetic microrobots.

Abstract:Manipulation and navigation of micro and nanoswimmers in different fluid environments can be achieved by chemicals, external fields, or even motile cells. Many researchers have selected magnetic fields as the active external actuation source based on the advantageous features of this actuation strategy such as remote and spatiotemporal control, fuel-free, high degree of reconfigurability, programmability, recyclability, and versatility. This review introduces fundamental concepts and advantages of magnetic micro/nanorobots (termed here as "MagRobots") as well as basic knowledge of magnetic fields and magnetic materials, setups for magnetic manipulation, magnetic field configurations, and symmetry-breaking strategies for effective movement. These concepts are discussed to describe the interactions between micro/nanorobots and magnetic fields. Actuation mechanisms of flagella-inspired MagRobots (i.e., corkscrew-like motion and traveling-wave locomotion/ciliary stroke motion) and surface walkers (i.e., surface-assisted motion), applications of magnetic fields in other propulsion approaches, and magnetic stimulation of micro/nanorobots beyond motion are provided followed by fabrication techniques for (quasi-)spherical, helical, flexible, wire-like, and biohybrid MagRobots. Applications of MagRobots in targeted drug/gene delivery, cell manipulation, minimally invasive surgery, biopsy, biofilm disruption/eradication, imaging-guided delivery/therapy/surgery, pollution removal for environmental remediation, and (bio)sensing are also reviewed. Finally, current challenges and future perspectives for the development of magnetically powered miniaturized motors are discussed.

Abstract:Miniature soft robots offer opportunities for safe and physically adaptive medical interventions in hard-to-reach regions. Deploying multiple robots could further enhance the efficacy and multifunctionality of these operations. However, multirobot deployment in physiologically relevant three-dimensional (3D) tubular structures is limited by the lack of effective mechanisms for independent control of miniature magnetic soft robots. This work presents a framework leveraging the shape-adaptive robotic design and heterogeneous resistance from robot-lumen interactions to enable magnetic multirobot control. We first compute influence and actuation regions to quantify robot movement. Subsequently, a path planning algorithm generates the trajectory of a permanent magnet for multirobot navigation in 3D lumens. Last, robots are controlled individually in multilayer lumen networks under medical imaging. Demonstrations of multilocation cargo delivery and flow diversion manifest their potential to enhance biomedical functions. This framework offers a solution to multirobot actuation benefiting applications across different miniature robotic devices in complex environments.

Abstract:It is nowadays of a great challenge to create and navigate artificial micro/nanomotor swarms by external stimuli, which, however, may develop reconfigurable robots or programmable matter for cooperative grasping, collective cargo transportation, microfactories, etc. This work demonstrates a general strategy to create and navigate micromotor swarms by near infrared (NIR) light-induced convection flows. Upon NIR irradiation at a selected area, convection flows are produced inside the liquid medium because of the temperature gradient established across the NIR-exposed area and unexposed area. Under the drag forces from the convection flows, the dispersed micromotor swarm phototactically to the convection center. After swarming, interactions between neighboring micromotors, such as electrostatic attractions or diffusiophoretic repulsions, are activated or enhanced because of the sharply-decreased interparticle distances. By simply moving NIR spot, the micromotors in the swarm can further collectively migrate to designated locations with the moving convection cell. By adjusting the NIR power density, the swarming and collective migration of micromotors, including parameters such as response time, swarming range and speed, can be swiftly and reversibly controlled. More interestingly, the strategy developed in this work can be applied to various micromotors (TiO2/Pt, SiO2/Pt, TiO2, ZnO micromotors) as well as microorganism such as E. coli regardless of their geometrical and material features. This facile and universal strategy may have far-reaching implications for the applications of micro/nanomotor swarms in cooperative cargo transport, micro/nanoengineering and chemical sensing because of its potential to create and manipulate local mixing systems, such as motor/motor, motor/organism, motor/cargo and motor/sensor assemblies and swarms. Abstract:Despite the growing interest in the motion mechanisms and application potential of individual active colloids/particles in micro/nanorobotics, their aggregation for higher-ordered mesostructures remains a significant challenge due to the complexity of their motion control and dynamics. Here, a magnetic trimer-like microrobot composed of three magnetic Janus colloids with different diameters exhibited multimodal locomotion, frequency-dependent reconfigurability, and contactless manipulation in a 3D environment. Various locomotion modes excited by adjusting the magnetic field rely on different driving principles. At a low Reynolds number, trimer-like microrobots can locomote in a 3D space based on their asymmetric shape distribution and can move on a surface by breaking spatial symmetry. A strategy to reconfigure trimer-like microrobots from β-config to α-config rapidly was implemented by alternating the frequency and strength of the magnetic field. Additionally, the trimer-like microrobots follow a unique chiral rotating mode with self-adjusting capabilities under uniform rotating magnetic field propulsion in horizontal plane. Through the integration of multimodal locomotion, these trimer-like microrobots are capable of moving in complex 3D environments and manipulating passive particles without in-depth contact via fluidic mediation. These trimer-like microrobots can reconfigure their operation mode according to multitasking requirements or in response to environmental variations.
On-Command Disassembly of Microrobotic Superstructures for Transport and Delivery of Magnetic Micromachines

Abstract:Magnetic microrobots have been developed for navigating microscale environments by means of remote magnetic fields. However, limited propulsion speeds at small scales remain an issue in the maneuverability of these devices as magnetic force and torque are proportional to their magnetic volume. Here, we propose a microrobotic superstructure, which, as analogous to a supramolecular system, consists of two or more microrobotic units that are interconnected and organized through a physical (transient) component (a polymeric frame or a thread). Our superstructures consist of microfabricated magnetic helical micromachines interlocked by a magnetic gelatin nanocomposite containing iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs). While the microhelices enable the motion of the superstructure, the IONPs serve as heating transducers for dissolving the gelatin chassis via magnetic hyperthermia. In a practical demonstration, we showcase the superstructure's motion with a gradient magnetic field in a large channel, the disassembly of the superstructure and release of the helical micromachines by a high-frequency alternating magnetic field, and the corkscrew locomotion of the released helices through a small channel via a rotating magnetic field. This adaptable microrobotic superstructure reacts to different magnetic inputs, which could be used to perform complex delivery procedures within intricate regions of the human body.

Abstract:By exploiting synchronization/desynchronization transitions and local robust hydrodynamic interactions, disparate micro/nanorobots with apparent differences in size, shape, and properties, such as chain‐like nanorobots (C‐NRs) and spherical microrobots (S‐MRs), can form cohesive microswarms with tunable heterogeneity and hierarchy. Assigning them with sensing and drug carrying functions enables precise collaborative drug delivery targeting unknown targets through a sensing‐navigating‐cargo dropping sequence. Individual differences in size, experience, and task specialization in natural swarms often result in heterogeneity and hierarchy, facilitating efficient and coordinated task accomplishment. Drawing inspiration from this phenomenon, a general strategy is proposed for organizing magnetic micro/nanorobots (MNRs) with apparent differences in size, shape, and properties into cohesive microswarms with tunable heterogeneity, controlled spatial hierarchy, and collaborative tasking capability. In this strategy, disparate magnetic MNRs can be manipulated to show reversible transitions between synchronization and desynchronization by elaborately regulating parameter sets of the rotating magnetic field. Utilizing these transitions, alongside local robust hydrodynamic interactions, diverse heterospecific pairings of disparate magnetic MNRs can be organized into heterogeneous microswarms, and their spatial organization can be dynamically adjusted from egalitarian to leader‐follower‐like hierarchies on the fly, both in open space and complex microchannels. Furthermore, when specializing the disparate MNRs with distinct functions ("division of labor") such as sensing and drug carrying, they can execute precise drug delivery targeting unknown sites in a collaborative sensing‐navigating‐cargo dropping sequence, demonstrating significant potential for precise tumor treatment. These findings highlight the critical roles of attribute differences and hierarchical organization in designing efficient swarming micro/nanorobots for biomedical applications.

Abstract:Microrobots have demonstrated attractive advantages for biomedical use, ranging from cargo delivery to invasive therapies. However, it remains a challenge to develop a universal control method for various microrobots to guarantee the precision of microrobot-based executions and further spread their applications. Herein, we propose an iterative learning control (ILC) method that can achieve precise position control for microrobots in a bionic flowing environment. Although the kinematics system of the microrobots and flowing environment has severe nonlinearities and uncertainties, the model- free control method, ILC, can optimize the input gradually to accurately accomplish microrobots' arrangements, including position control and drug release. Oil-droplet-based magnetic soft microrobots are utilized as control objects to prove the advantages of the proposed control method. Two electro- magnets are set up as actuation devices, and a microchannel with a flowing medium mimics the vessel environment. By rigorous mathematical analysis and numerous experiments, the proposed method is verified to be effective, and the results show that the microrobots can be precisely controlled to the desired position in the flowing environment. These results pave a novel and accessible path to achieve precise position control for various microrobots.

Abstract:Abstract Magnetic microrobots have been developed for navigating microscale environments by means of remote magnetic fields. However, limited propulsion speeds at small scales remain an issue in the maneuverability of these devices as magnetic force and torque are proportional to their magnetic volume. Here, a microrobotic superstructure is proposed, which, as analogous to a supramolecular system, consists of two or more microrobotic units that are interconnected and organized through a physical (transient) component (a polymeric frame or a thread). The superstructures consist of microfabricated magnetic helical micromachines interlocked by a magnetic gelatin nanocomposite containing iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs). While the microhelices enable the motion of the superstructure, the IONPs serve as heating transducers for dissolving the gelatin chassis via magnetic hyperthermia. In a practical demonstration, the superstructure's motion with a gradient magnetic field in a large channel, the disassembly of the superstructure and release of the helical micromachines by a high‐frequency alternating magnetic field, and the corkscrew locomotion of the released helices through a small channel via a rotating magnetic field, is showcased. This adaptable microrobotic superstructure reacts to different magnetic inputs, which can be used to perform complex delivery procedures within intricate regions of the human body.
