Abstract:The emergence of flexible sensors addresses the limitations of traditional detection equipment, such as large size, high cost, and inconvenient portability. These sensors have significantly advanced the development of wearable electronic devices for applications in electronic skin, energy harvesting, and energy storage. To enhance the sensitivity of flexible sensors, we developed a hierarchical polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofiber-based piezoelectric sensor. By utilizing coaxial electrospinning, we fabricated nanofibers with hollow interiors and porous outer walls. Additionally, microstructures were constructed on the fiber membrane surface by modifying the collector's shape. The resulting microstructured hollow PVDF nanofiber membrane exhibited high beta-phase content (91.31 %), excellent flexibility (maximum strain 56.9 %), and high porosity (88.94 %). The sensor demonstrated a sensitivity of 2.7 V/N (1.08 V/kPa) and a maximum output voltage of 10.1 V, approximately three times higher than that of solid PVDF nanofibers without microstructures. Even after 14,400 cycles of impact, the sensor maintained stable output. The sensor was successfully applied to human activity monitoring and gesture recognition, showcasing its ability to monitor various human activities, respond rapidly (60.4 ms), and synchronously control a mechanical palm to perform different gestures. This work highlights the potential of hierarchically structured hollow PVDF nanofibers in advancing the performance and application scope of flexible piezoelectric sensors.

Abstract:Abstract Physiological mechano-acoustic signals play a pivotal role in medical diagnosis and fitness monitoring. Mechanical waves generated by natural physiological activities such as myocardial contraction, and vocal fold vibration, propagate through the tissues and fluids of the body and reveal characteristic signals of these events. Conventional methods such as stethoscope and electrocardiography (ECG) are not suitable for wearable mode and continuous monitoring. In this paper, we propose a wearable physiological sounds sensing device to monitor heart sound and detect speech and voice with high accuracy. The device consists of a MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) acoustic sensor and a low-noise amplification circuit, and both of them are packaged by silicone polymers with an air cavity to achieve conformal contact with human skin. The proposed device has advantages of light weight, sweatproof capability, resistant to noise and good stability. The wearable device has great potential in clinical diagnosis, healthcare, human-machine interaction and many other applications.

Abstract:Flexible and wearable e-skin sensors are attracting a great interest for their smart sensing applications in next-generation electronics. However, implant ability, sensitivity, and biosignal detection capability in a self-powered manner are the prime concerns in embedded devices. In particular, electrode compatibility and imperishability have become challenging issues in wearable sensors due to the poor compatibility and fragileness of metal electrodes. In this context, we report on a skin-interactive metal-free spongy electrode in a piezoelectric sensor where highly aligned poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanofibers (NFs) arrays are introduced as the piezoelectric active component and conducting polyaniline- (PANI-) coated PVDF (PANI–PVDF) NFs mats served as flexible electrodes. Notably, a 99% yield of piezoelectric phases of the aligned PVDF arrays is the key factor to exhibit promising mechano-sensitivity (0.8 V/kPa) performance that in turn helps in human-health monitoring. The sensor shows excellent mechanical to electrical energy conversion that enable to sense human finger touch (10 V under 10 kPa) with energy conversion efficiency of 53%. Most importantly, due to the compatible electrodes excellent mechanical stability has been found showing negligible degradation over 12,000 periodic cycles. Furthermore, under mechanical stimuli, it is also possible to charge up a capacitor (1 μF) to 4 V within 60 s confirming the possibility to use the device as a self-powered piezo-organic-e-skin sensor (POESS). This type of structural design enables to trace elusive movement of muscles and the operation in several conditions such as bending, compression and stretching. We demonstrated various human gestures monitoring, such as wrist bending, neck stretching, and arm compressions, throat movements during drinking water, coughing actions, and swallowing. In addition, diverse specific phonation recognition, heart-pulse measurement and its respective short-time Fourier transform (STFT) analysis indicate an efficient and convenient way of monitoring human-health status particularly in hospital-free mode.

Abstract:Multifunctional wearable bioelectronics (MWBs) are demonstrated with integrated a piezoelectric pulse wave sensor and a temperature sensor for physiological signal detection by enhancing nanocomposite dispersion and metal deposition. The MWBs exhibit high sensitivity and resolution in detecting blood pulse waveforms and skin temperature changes, demonstrating its potential for mental stress analysis. This study multifunctional wearable bioelectronics (MWBs) integrated with a piezoelectric sensor and a micropatterned temperature sensor for accurate detection of human physiological signals. Piezoelectric nanocomposite uniformity, stretchability, and adhesion is improved through the functionalization of nanoparticles with glycidyl silane and nonionic surfactants dispersion in the organic polymer matrix. Additionally, crack‐free nanometal layers are deposited on the nanocomposite interface with high adhesion by thiol silane functionalization and oxygen plasma treatment. The MWBs exhibit a temperature sensitivity of 7.1 Ω °C−1 (R2 of 0.999) between 30 °C to 40 °C, a pressure sensitivity of 72 mV kPa−1 (R2 of 0.998) within 0.5 kPa to 10 kPa, and a stable mechanical durability. MWBs have demonstrated to detect subtle pulse waveforms at an arm‐mimicking phantom and human skin, respectively. Furthermore, MWBs are applied to analyze physiological signal characteristics caused by human stress, demonstrating its potential for use in healthcare electronics in various medical applications.

Abstract:Organic piezoelectric materials are emerging as integral components in the development of advanced implantable self-powered sensors for the next generation. Despite their promising applications, a key limitation lies in their reduced mechanical force-to-electricity conversion efficiency. In this study, we present a breakthrough in the fabrication of soft poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) organic electrospun piezoelectric nanofibers (OEPNs) with exceptional piezoelectric performance achieved through the incorporation of zinc oxide nanorods (ZnO NR). The inclusion of ZnO NR proved instrumental in augmenting the nanocrystallization of PVDF organic electrospun piezoelectric nanofibers (OEPNs), leading to a highly efficient crystal phase transformation from the α phase to the β/γ phase, serving as superior piezoelectric working dipoles. The resulting PVDF/ZnO NR OEPNs exhibited unparalleled piezoelectric output voltage and current density, particularly noteworthy under a micro-pressure of 1 kPa and a low frequency of 1.5 Hz. Utilizing the obtained PVDF/ZnO NR OEPNs as the piezoelectric working element, we engineered a soft self-powered micro-pressure sensor. This sensor was implanted simultaneously on the cardiovascular walls of the heart and femoral artery in pigs. The sensor demonstrated precise monitoring and recording capabilities for micro-pressure changes during various physiological states, spanning from wakefulness to coma, euthanasia, and notably, the formation of cardiac thrombus. These findings underscore the immense potential of the implantable self-powered sensor for the assessment and diagnosis of pressure-related cardiovascular diseases, such as thrombus and atherosclerosis, during the postoperative recovery phase. This innovative technology offers valuable insights into the dynamic physiological states, paving the way for enhanced postoperative care and management of cardiovascular conditions.

Abstract:The naturally microstructure-bioinspired piezoresistive sensor for human–machine interaction and human health monitoring represents an attractive opportunity for wearable bioelectronics. However, due to the trade-off between sensitivity and linear detection range, obtaining piezoresistive sensors with both a wide pressure monitoring range and a high sensitivity is still a great challenge. Herein, we design a hierarchically microstructure-bioinspired flexible piezoresistive sensor consisting of a hierarchical polyaniline/polyvinylidene fluoride nanofiber (HPPNF) film sandwiched between two interlocking electrodes with microdome structure. Ascribed to the substantially enlarged 3D deformation rates, these bioelectronics exhibit an ultrahigh sensitivity of 53 kPa–1, a pressure detection range from 58.4 to 960 Pa, a fast response time of 38 ms, and excellent cycle stability over 50 000 cycles. Furthermore, this conformally skin-adhered sensor successfully demonstrates the monitoring of human physiological signals and movement states, such as wrist pulse, throat activity, spinal posture, and gait recognition. Abstract:Whereas piezoelectric pressure sensors (PPSs) have been applied in the monitoring of human body movement and physiological parameters, they show inherent limitations in wearable applications, including toxicity, degradation, and brittleness. In this study, we develop safe, stable, and mechanically flexible composite thin films consisting of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), BaTiO3 nanoparticles (BTO-NPs), and textured aluminum nitride (AlN) thin film for the demonstration of wearable PPS with enhanced output performance and biocompatibility. The PPS made of BTO-NP-embedded-PVDF and AlN film on Cu foil is attached to different parts of human body to measure different output voltages depending on the physiological and physical stimulus. The simple bending (from breathing, chewing, and swallowing), joint motions (at wrist, elbow, and finger), and low- (from eyeball movement) and high-pressure applications (by squat, lunge, and walking) are measured. Our PVDF+BTO-NP/AlN-PPS (PBA-PPS) device has the potential for personal safety, healthcare, and activity monitoring applications with easy wearability.

Abstract:High flexibility, good mechanical strength, and high sensitivity are the most important factors in developing wearable devices for real-time physiological monitoring. Here, a self-powered piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENG) based on the composite films made from lead zirconate titanate, microfibrillated cellulose and polyvinyl alcohol (PZT/) via melt copolymerization method was proposed. Specifically, MFC promoted PVA crystallization when the defects and cracks inside the MFC were filled by PVA, by which the output performance of the proposed PENG was improved. The results showed that a maximum output open-voltage (V OC ) of 16.5 V and a maximum output short-current (I SC ) of 0.86 μA were obtained, the sensitivity of PENG was 0.3168 V·kPa −1 . Based on the PENG's, sensitivity and excellent mechanical properties, it could detect facial activity and chest respiratory in real time, and continuously output pressure waveform. Weak physiological signal below 0.5 kPa could be detected, and the response time was 54 ms, this showed that it had broad application prospects in medical detection and clinical diagnosis.

Abstract:Biosafe wearable healthcare monitor has attracted significant attention owing to their applicability to wearable electronics. However, the narrow sensing range and poor response limit the application of flexible devices for comprehensive monitoring of human health-related physiological signals (i.e. pulse diagnosis). Critical challenges remain in the development of biocompatible materials and the design of flexible bio-integrated platforms for these purposes, targeting performance approaching those of conventional wafer-based technologies and long-term operational stability. In this context, this work presents a robust and flexible MXene/polydopamine (PDA)-composite-film-based pressure sensor in a portable/wearable fashion, which establishes a unique intercalated spherical-like PDA molecules structure, thereby resulting in excellent sensing performance. The MXene/PDA-based pressure sensor has sensitivity of up to 138.8 kPa-1 in the pressure range of 0.18-6.20 kPa with fast response and recovery speed (t1<100 ms; t2<50 ms). Associated embodiment involves real-time precise measurements of a variety of health-related physiological signals, ranging from wrist pulse, to finger motions, to vocalization and to facial expressions, with high sensitivity and accuracy. Studies on human subjects establish the clinical significance of these devices for future opportunities of health monitoring and intelligent control to predict and diagnose diseases.

Abstract:Continuous monitoring of physical signals such as stress and strain plays a crucial role in Internet of Thing and artificial intelligence, thus flexible mechanical sensors gain increasing attention due to their enormous application potential in wearable electronics, soft robots, human-machine interfaces, etc. Recently, significant progress has been made in mechanical sensors for trading off high sensitivity and wide range for low dimensional strain/force sensors, yet it is still of significant challenge to discriminate complicated three-dimensional (3D) mechanical signals in practical applications. Herein, a novel wearable film sensor capable of sensing multi-directional mechanical stimuli is developed by coating MXene onto low-entropy structured piezoelectric poly(vinylene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) mat composed of aligned nanofibers. The resultant functional fiber mats give rise to an anisotropic in-plane conductive network for 2D in-plane strain sensing, and oriented ferroelectric crystals in nanofibers with piezoelectricity allow for out-of-plane dynamic pressure detection. Besides, the all-in-one flexible anisotropic sensor shows linear sensing properties and high sensitivities both in the plane strain and out of the plane pressure due to piezoresistive and piezoelectric mechanisms, respectively. Such sensors can effectively distinguish multi-directional mechanical stimuli for potential applications in human machine interfaces, healthcare, entertainment and other systems.

Abstract:Non-contact, cost-effective, multifunctional and robust monitoring platform without mechanical wearing burden is highly desired to enhance the immersive experience for users during the long-term health management. However, most reported intelligent electronics in human life need to be adhered conformably to key human body parts for accurate signal detection, giving rising to activity interference and wearing burden in the long-term usage. Herein, a highly sensitive flexible film pressure sensor with a folded structure configuration assembled from irradiation-cross linked polypropylene (IXPP) piezoelectret film featured with piezoelectric-like dynamic electrical output attributes are reported. Such simple folded structure incorporated specially into the device design endows the piezoelectric film sensor with merits such as enhanced sensitivity, high signal-to-noise ratio and excellent anti-interference capacity. Consequently, the sensor can achieve a linear pressure sensitivity of 92 pC/kPa over a wide pressure range of 0.6 to 62.4 kPa, a pressure resolution of 0.98%, and fast response/recovery time of 40 ms. The flexible piezoelectric film sensors are embedded into cushions and attached to the back of chairs for application demonstrations of non-contact sensing. Remarkably, low-frequency human motion and weak physiological signal detection are achieved in a non-contact mode by a highly sensitive piezoelectric sensing principle in an all-in-one configuration, simplifying the signal processing and monitoring system design. A vital sign monitoring system based on the intelligent cushion is further developed to unlock the health status of sedentary crowd. This is the first work that ever use commercially available irradiated cross-linked polypropylene (IXPP) film to design pressure sensor and such sensors are successfully connected to the commercial "C-life" smart home ecosystem, presenting strong practicability and application prospects of such films in smart households and remote healthcare beyond the laboratory.

Abstract:Self-powered operation, flexibility, excellent mechanical properties, and ultra-high sensitivity are highly desired properties for pressure sensors in human health monitoring and anthropomorphic robotic systems. Piezoelectric pressure sensors, with enhanced electromechanical performance to effectively distinguish multiple mechanical stimuli (including pressing, stretching, bending, and twisting), have attracted interest to precisely acquire the weak signals of the human body. In this work, we prepared a poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene)/ multi-walled carbon nanotube (P(VDF-TrFE)/MWCNT) composite by an electrospinning process and stretched it to achieve alignment of the polymer chains. The composite membrane demonstrated excellent piezoelectricy, favorable mechanical strength, and high sensitivity. The piezoelectric coefficient d33 value was approximately 50 pm/V, the Young’s modulus was ~0.986 GPa, and the sensitivity was ~540 mV/N. The resulting composite membrane was employed as a piezoelectric pressure sensor to monitor small physiological signals including pulse, breath, and small motions of muscle and joints such as swallowing, chewing, and finger and wrist movements. Moderate doping with carbon nanotubes had a positive impact on the formation of the β phase of the piezoelectric device, and the piezoelectric pressure sensor has the potential for application in health care systems and smart wearable devices.

Abstract:Real-time physiological signal monitoring is very essential to evaluate the function recovery, and the construction of ultrasensitive strain sensor has become the key technique and research hotspot in cardiac rehabilitation. Here, piezoresistive conductive polymer composites (CPCs)–based strain sensor, of which the conductive MXene/AgNW composite film served as the sensing materials and the flexible and stretchable thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) acted as the supporting layer, was developed and further pre-strain treated to construct the ultrasensitive microcrack structure. Importantly, changing the mass percentage of MXene, sample thickness, and pre-strain amplitude can effectively tune the microcrack structure to achieve the optimization of strain-sensing performance of the sensor. As a result, the prepared strain sensor exhibits an ultrahigh sensitivity (gauge factor (GF) = 602), wide working range (90% strain), low detection limit (0.2%), rapid response and recovery time (60 ms/70 ms), and long-term durability over 1000 cycles. As a proof of concept, it can accurately monitor the pulse rate and respiration rate under different sports states and the simulated breathing modes, which will undoubtedly provide strong guarantee for the real-time health monitoring during the treadmill exercise and assessment of cardiac status. This work will undoubtedly possess a great guidance in the evaluation of cardiac rehabilitation.

Abstract:Continuous monitoring of human physiological signals is critical to managing personal healthcare by early detection of health disorders. Wearable and implantable devices are attracting growing attention as they show great potential for real‐time recording of physiological conditions and body motions. Conventional piezoelectric sensors have the advantage of potentially being self‐powered, but have limitations due to their intrinsic lack of stretchability. Herein, a kirigami approach to realize a novel stretchable strain sensor is introduced through a network of cut patterns in a piezoelectric thin film, exploiting the anisotropic and local bending that the patterns induce. The resulting pattern simultaneously enhances the electrical performance of the film and its stretchability while retaining the mechanical integrity of the underlying materials. The power output is enhanced from the mechano‐electric piezoelectric sensing effect by introducing an intersegment, through‐plane, electrode pattern. By additionally integrating wireless electronics, this sensing network could work in an entirely battery‐free mode. The kirigami stretchable piezoelectric sensor is demonstrated in cardiac monitoring and wearable body tracking applications. The integrated soft, stretchable, and biocompatible sensor demonstrates excellent in vitro and ex vivo performances and provides insights for the potential use in myriad biomedical and wearable health monitoring applications. A stretchable self‐powered sensing system is established for wireless health monitoring. With combination of structural optimization and a creative intersegment electrode design, this system features enhanced properties in both mechanical and electrical performances. By additionally integrating with an ultraminiaturized wireless interface, this kirigami‐based sensing network can work in an entirely battery‐free mode.

Abstract:Fabrication of soft piezoelectric nanomaterials is essential for the development of wearable and implantable biomedical devices. However, a big challenge in this soft functional material development is to achieve a high piezoelectric property with long‐term stability in a biological environment. Here, a one‐step strategy for fabricating core/shell poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF)/dopamine (DA) nanofibers (NFs) with a very high β‐phase content and self‐aligned polarization is reported. The self‐assembled core/shell structure is believed essential for the formation and alignment of β‐phase PVDF, where strong intermolecular interaction between the NH2 groups on DA and the CF2 groups on PVDF is responsible for aligning the PVDF chains and promoting β‐phase nucleation. The as‐received PVDF/DA NFs exhibit significantly enhanced piezoelectric performance and excellent stability and biocompatibility. An all‐fiber‐based soft sensor is fabricated and tested on human skin and in vivo in mice. The devices show a high sensitivity and accuracy for detecting weak physiological mechanical stimulation from diaphragm motions and blood pulsation. This sensing capability offers great diagnostic potential for the early assessment and prevention of cardiovascular diseases and respiratory disorders.

Abstract:High-sensitive and fast-responding flexible strain sensors are essential for the smart wearable devices that precisely and dynamically perceive the weak deformations induced by human physiological signals. Here, a flexible strain sensor via polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-encapsulated microfiber Sagnac interferometer was designed and prepared for monitoring the human pulse signals and sound vibrations. The sensor achieved a record-breaking sensitivity (gauge factor, GF = 9977) and an extremely low detection limit (0.00025%) due to the strong polarization-dependent coupling effect in the microfiber coupler and the polarization-mixing effect in the Sagnac loop. The relative intensity demodulation method also enabled a fast response time of 10 μs. The wearable pulse measurements were implemented by attaching this flexible strain sensor directly to human skin at various locations and the waveform details were accurately captured. Taking advantage of the ultra-high sensitivity and fast response performance of the prepared sensor, the real-time dynamic acquisition of the underwater weak signal, such as the hydro-acoustic waves with a wide range of 20 Hz–16.86 kHz, has been demonstrated. These initial results pave the way for a new and innovative category of underwater wearable devices with rapid detection of human physiological signals and weak environmental vibrations.

Abstract:Mechanical signals such as pressure and strain reflect important psychological and physiological states of the human body. Body-integrated sensors, including skin-mounted and surgically implanted ones, allow personalized health monitoring for the general population as well as patients. However, the development of such measuring devices has been hindered by the strict requirements for human-biocompatible materials and the need for high performance sensors; most existing devices or sensors do not meet all the desired specifications. Here, a set of flexible, stretchable, wearable, implantable, and degradable mechanical sensors is reported with excellent mechanical robustness and compliance, outstanding biocompatibility, remotely-triggered degradation, and excellent sensing performance, using a conductive silk fibroin hydrogel (CSFH). They can detect multiple mechanical signals such as pressure, strain, and bending angles. Moreover, combined with a drug-loaded silk-based microneedle array, sensor-equipped devices are shown to be effective for real-time monitoring and in situ treatment of epilepsy in a rodent model. These sensors offer potential applications in custom health monitoring wearables, and in situ treatment of chronic clinical disorders.

Abstract:Biomechanical signals, such as strain variations of the skin, vibrations of the chest and throat, as well as motions of the limbs, hold immense significance in healthcare monitoring, disease diagnosis, and human-machine interface. Examples span from monitoring blood pressure and pulse waves for atherosclerosis diagnosis, to distinguishing between metatarsalgia patients and healthy individuals by tracking their walking postures, and to voiceprint recognition and hearing aid technology based on vibration sensing. Wearable biomechanical sensors play a crucial role in providing valuable insights into one's health condition and physiological features. However, the development of high-performance sensors capable of prolonged monitoring poses challenges. Traditional batteries have limited lifespan and pose difficulty in replacement. Using self-powered devices for the measurement of biomechanical signals represents an attractive solution to tackle the issues caused by batteries. This review focuses on the mechanisms of wearable self-powered biomechanical sensors, and delves into recent advancements in their applications, covering areas of cardiovascular system monitoring, acoustic signals detection, human motion tracking, and many others associated with biomechanics. A concluding section outlines the potential future prospects in this evolving field of materials and biomedical research. This article reviews the latest progress in wearable self-powered biomechanical sensors. Based on piezoelectric, electrostatic, and electromagnetic effects, these sensors find their potential in various applications, such as cardiovascular system monitoring, acoustic signals detection, human motion tracking, and other biomedical scenarios. Challenges in this realm lie in the development of self-powered sensors with high output performances, compatible bio-interfaces, and multi-directional sensing capabilities. image

Abstract:Flexible piezoelectric sensors combine advantages including low‐cost, flexibility, multi‐functions, present a huge market prospect. In this research, multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT)/MXene/polyacrylonitrile (PAN) piezoelectric composites films for flexible piezoelectric sensors are fabricated by electrospinning technology, the planar zigzag conformation content of 97.98% in PAN composite fibers is achieved owing to the synergistic effect of MWCNT and MXene, the synergistic effect of MWCNT and MXene nanoparticles can also efficiently promote the mechanical performance and piezoelectric output. The piezoelectric sensor exhibits fast response time (10.21 ms), a possible mechanism is proposed to explain the improvement of piezoelectric effect. The sensor can measure human pulse, distinguish human movements, the fabricated sensor has broad practical value in the field of healthcare, its' use can contribute to stable and accurate measurements of physiological parameters, enabling applications in various healthcare and fitness monitoring scenarios.

Abstract:Poly( l -lactic acid) (PLLA) is a widely used U.S. Food and Drug Administration–approved implantable biomaterial that also possesses strong piezoelectricity. However, the intrinsically low stability of its high-energy piezoelectric β phase and random domain orientations associated with current synthesis approaches remain a critical roadblock to practical applications. Here, we report an interfacial anchoring strategy for fabricating core/shell PLLA/glycine (Gly) nanofibers (NFs) by electrospinning, which show a high ratio of piezoelectric β phase and excellent orientation alignment. The self-assembled core/shell structure offers strong intermolecular interactions between the -OH groups on Gly and C=O groups on PLLA, which promotes the crystallization of oriented PLLA polymer chains and stabilizes the β phase structure. As-received core/shell NFs exhibit substantially enhanced piezoelectric performance and excellent stability. An all NF–based nonwoven fabric is fabricated and assembled as a flexible nanogenerator. The device offers excellent conformality to heavily wrinkled surfaces and thus can precisely detect complex physiological motions often found from biological organs.
