Lymphadenitis Associated with Cat-Scratch Disease Simulating a Neoplasm: Imaging Findings with Histopathological Associations.

Abstract:The lymphadenitis associated with cat-scratch disease (CSD) is often confused with neoplasms by a number of radiologists and clinicians, and consequently, unnecessary invasive procedures or surgeries are performed. In the present study, the contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of 10 patients (6 men and 4 women) with clinically and pathologically confirmed lymphadenitis associated with CSD were retrospectively analyzed (CT in 3 patients, MRI in 6 patients, and CT and MRI in 1 patient) at The Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine (Hangzhou, China) between January 2007 and November 2014. As a result, 17 enlarged lymph nodes were identified in 10 cases. The 5 nodes identified by CT scan exhibited relatively inhomogeneous isodensity to muscle, with patchy low density in the center. All 14 nodes identified by MRI scan exhibited homogeneous or heterogeneous isointensity to muscle or slightly increased intensity compared with that of muscle on T1-weighted images (T1WI), and homogeneous or heterogeneous hyperintensity on fat-suppressed T2WI. Following enhancement, all 17 enlarged lymph nodes associated with CSD demonstrated the following 3 different enhancement patterns: Moderate homogeneous enhancement (n=8), which was associated with histologically identified early disease stage; marked heterogeneous enhancement with no enhancement of the necrotic areas (n=4), and heterogeneous enhancement with progressively 'spoke-wheel-like' (defined as radiating enhancement from the center) enhancement of the patchy low-density area (n=1), which was associated with histologically identified intermediate disease stage; and astral low-density/hypointensity with marked enhancement (n=2) or a 'rose flower' sign (n=2), which was associated with histologically identified late disease stage. We hypothesized that the CT and MRI results of lymphadenitis in CSD may be associated with the pathological features. It may be suggested that the diagnosis of CSD may be formed when considering the characteristic CT and MRI features of astral low-density/hypointensity with marked enhancement or a 'rose flower' sign (defined as marginal petaloid enhancement) in the late disease stage, or the MRI results of homogeneous, moderate enhancement in the early disease stage, or the CT/MRI data of heterogeneous enhancement with non-enhancing area in the center in the intermediate disease stage, in solitary or multiple enlarged lymph nodes associated with general subcutaneous edema in the vicinity of the nodes on CT/MRI and with a history of cat exposure.
CT Features of Focal Organizing Pneumonia: an Analysis of Consecutive Histopathologically Confirmed 45 Cases

Abstract:Objective: To study the CT characteristics of solitary focal organizing pneumonia (FOP).Materials and methods: Chest CT of consecutive 45 patients (34 males and 11 females, median age: 56 years) with confirmed FOP were analyzed. The CT features between large FOP (>3 cm, n=27) and small FOP (<= 3 cm, n=18) were compared.Results: FOP lesions predominately located in peripheral lungs (86.7%), with the right lower lobe being most common lobe (44.4%). No lesion mainly located in the inner 113 of lungs. All large lesions were polygon in shape and had an irregular margin, while small lesions were more likely to be round or oval with an irregular or smooth border. Air bronchogram or small bubble-like lucency was present in majority of the lesions. 42.2% of lesions had incompact internal structure with inhomogeneous density besides air component. Most lesions were associated with a contraction or convergence of surrounding vessels; while no pulmonary vessel was interrupted abruptly by a small FOP lesion. Majority of large lesions had broad contact with the pleura, while only one patient had mild pleural effusion. Mild mediastinal lymph nodes enlargement was present in about 115 of the patients.Conclusion: Compared with the known CT features of lung cancer, our results suggest differential diagnosis can often be made for large FOP, while small FOP may resemble lung cancer. Abstract:A 5-year-old castrated male domestic shorthair cat was referred for further investigation of pulmonary nodules incidentally detected on thoracic radiographs. Thoracic radiographs identified ill-defined soft tissue opacity nodules with small faint mineral opacity. Thoracic computed tomography (CT) revealed that bronchial dilation and bronchial wall thickening in bilateral cranial and accessory lung lobes. Round to ellipsoid mineralized concretions were found embedded in the intrabronchial soft tissue attenuation material. Based on radiography, CT, and cytology, the patient was tentatively diagnosed as having broncholithiasis with chronic bronchitis. This report described the CT diagnosis of broncholithiasis, which has been rarely reported in a cat.

Abstract:A 33-year-old man had dizziness for 3 days without provoking factors. Head CT demonstrated a mass in the left lateral anterior cranial fossa with calcification and cystic degeneration (figure 1, A-C). MRI showed an irregularly shaped mass with mixed signal and slight marginal enhancement (figure 1, D-F). He underwent mass resection with no recurrent dizziness during 12 months' follow-up. On pathologic examination, the cyst inner lining consisted of ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelium(1,2) (figure 2). The diagnosis was bronchogenic cyst, a rare congenital malformation of ventral foregut development. Surgical excision is the elective treatment.
Retrospective study of feline tracheal mass lesions

Abstract:Objectives: This multicentre, retrospective observational study aimed to describe the clinical presentation, diagnostic methods, treatment and outcomes of cats with tracheal masses. Methods: Eighteen cats from five academic or secondary/tertiary animal hospitals were included. Results: The median age at diagnosis was 10.7 years (mean 9.5; range 1-17). There were nine castrated males, seven spayed females, one intact male and one intact female. Fourteen (78%) were domestic shorthairs, one (6%) was an Abyssinian, one (6%) was an American Shorthair, one (6%) was a Bengal and one (6%) was a Scottish Fold. The most common presenting complaints included chronic respiratory distress or dyspnoea (n = 14), followed by wheezing/gagging (n = 12), coughing (n = 5) and voice changes (n = 5). There was cervical tracheal involvement in 16/18, and two showed involvement of the intrathoracic trachea. The following methods were used for diagnosis: ultrasound-guided fine-needle biopsy (UG-FNB) and cytology (n = 8), bronchoscopic forceps biopsy and histopathology (n = 5), surgical resection and histopathology (n = 3), forceps biopsy via an endotracheal tube (n = 1) and histology of tissue sputtered from a cough (n = 1). Lymphoma was most often diagnosed (n = 15), followed by adenocarcinoma (n = 2) and squamous cell carcinoma (n = 1). Most lymphoma cases received chemotherapy with or without radiation according to various protocols, and partial (n = 5) or complete responses (n = 8) were noted. Kaplan-Meier survival data for cats with lymphoma revealed a median survival time of 214 days (95% confidence interval >149 days), which was significantly longer than that of other types of tumours (21 days). Conclusions and relevance: Lymphoma was the most prevalent diagnosis, and showed a good response to chemotherapy with or without radiation therapy. Various diagnostic procedures were performed, and UG-FNB and cytology are good diagnostic procedures for cervical tracheal lesions. Owing to the variety of treatment protocols at different centres, it was impossible to compare outcomes.

Abstract:Vibrio parahaemolyticus strain 10260 was isolated from a patient with diarrhea. Biochemical and serological characters of the strain were analyzed. This strain possessed a new combination of O- and K-antigens. From the results of this study, the serotype of V. parahaemolyticus strain 10260 was proposed as O1:K20.
Bronchopulmonary Disease in the Cat: Historical, Physical, Radiographic, Clinicopathologic, and Pulmonary Functional Evaluation of 24 Affected and 15 Healthy Cats

Abstract:The results of clinical and pulmonary functional evaluation of 24 cats with bronchopulmonary disease and 15 healthy cats are presented. Affected cats had historical evidence of excessive reflexes (coughing, sneezing); physical evidence of airway secretions (crackles), obstruction (wheezing), and increased tracheal sensitivity; radiographic evidence of bronchial and interstitial lung disease; and cytological evidence of airway inflammation or mucous secretions. Bacterial isolates from healthy and affected cats were predominantly Gram-negative rods, indicating that bronchi of cats are not always sterile and that normal flora should be considered in interpreting cultures from cats with suspected bronchopulmonary disease. Cats were grouped according to relative disease severity based on scored historical, physical, and radiographic abnormalities. The mean (+/- standard deviation) baseline lung resistance measurement in healthy cats was 28.9 cm H2O/L/s (+/- 6.2 cm H2O/L/s), whereas in mildly, moderately, and severely affected cats it was 38.3 cm H2O/L/s (+/- 21.5 cm H2O/L/s), 44.8 cmH2O/L/s (+/- 7.7 cm H2O/L/s), and 105.2 cm H2O/L/s (+/- 66.9 cm H2O/L/s), respectively. In healthy cats, dynamic lung compliance was 19.8 (+/- 7.4), whereas in mildly, moderately, and severely affected cats it was 14.7 mL/cm H2O (+/- 3.8 mL/cm H2O), 17.7 mL/cm H2O (+/- 6.9 mL/cm H2O), and 13.0 mL/cm H2O (+/- 7.9 mL/cm H2O), respectively. Thus, airway obstruction was present in many of the affected cats. Based on acute response to the bronchodilator, terbutaline, airway obstruction was partially reversible in many affected cats, although the degree of reversibility varied. Furthermore, based on bronchoprovocation testing, 6 (of 7) affected cats evaluated also had increased airway responsiveness to aerosolized methacholine.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To determine the CT findings of multiple cavitary lung lesions that allow the differentiation between benign and malignant etiologies.METHODS: We reviewed CT scans, including patients with two or more cavitary lung lesions. We evaluated the number of cavitary lesions, their location, cavity wall thickness, and additional findings, correlating the variables with the diagnosis of a benign or malignant lesion.RESULTS: We reviewed the chest CT scans of 102 patients, 58 (56.9%) of whom were male. The average age was 50.5 ± 18.0 years. Benign and malignant lesions were diagnosed in 74 (72.6%) and 28 (27.4%) of the patients, respectively. On the CT scans, the mean number of cavities was 3, the mean wall thickness of the largest lesions was 6.0 mm, and the mean diameter of the largest lesions was 27.0 mm. The lesions were predominantly in the upper lobes, especially on the right (in 43.1%). In our comparison of the variables studied, a diagnosis of malignancy was not found to correlate significantly with the wall thickness of the largest cavity, lymph node enlargement, emphysema, consolidation, bronchiectasis, or bronchial obstruction. The presence of centrilobular nodules correlated significantly with the absence of malignant disease (p < 0.05). In contrast, a greater number of cavities correlated significantly with malignancy (p < 0.026).CONCLUSIONS: A larger number of cavitary lung lesions and the absence of centrilobular nodules may be characteristic of a malignant etiology. However, on the basis of our evaluation of the lesions in our sample, we cannot state that wall thickness is a good indicator of a benign or malignant etiology.

Computed tomography, radiology and echocardiography in cats naturally infected with Aelurostrongylus abstrusus

Abstract:Objectives The aims of the study were to describe the radiographic and computed tomographic features in cats naturally infected with Aelurostrongylus abstrusus, and to identify signs of pulmonary hypertension with echocardiography. Methods Fourteen cats positive on Baermann test for A abstrusus were included in the study. All cats underwent thoracic radiography, CT and echocardiography. Results The most common clinical signs were coughing (10/14) and dyspnoea (5/14). Radiographic findings included a generalised unstructured interstitial pulmonary pattern (8/14), mixed bronchointerstitioalveolar pattern (3/14) and bronchointerstitial pattern with bronchial wall thickening (3/14). Sternal lymphadenopathy was detected on thoracic radiographs in six cats. On CT, features were mixed bronchointerstitioalveolar pattern with ground-glass appearance in six cats, interstitioalveolar with multiple pulmonary nodules in five, interstitial ground-glass infiltrates in three, regional lymph node enlargement in 11 (10 sternal, three cranial mediastinal and three tracheobronchial lymph nodes) and subpleural thickening in four. None of the thoracic radiographs revealed subpleural thickening. In all cases, pulmonary vessels were normal in terms of size, shape and attenuation on both radiography and CT. Pulmonary hypertension and cardiac abnormalities were not observed in any cat during echocardiography. Conclusions and relevance CT provided a more thorough characterisation of pulmonary and mediastinal lesions compared with thoracic radiographs in cats naturally infected with A abstrusus. Although feline aelurostrongylosis has been previously associated with histopathological lesions in lung arteries, in this cohort clinical evidence of pulmonary hypertension was not documented.
Case report: Intracranial epidermoid cyst in a cat

Abstract:A 9-year-old American Shorthair, castrated male, weighing 4.3 kg was presented to our hospital because of intermittent ataxia and tetraparesis for 6 weeks. On presentation, the cat was in a stupor and on recumbency, and had vertical nystagmus in both eyes. These clinical signs suggested a brainstem disorder. MRI showed a mass lesion in the caudal aspect of the fourth ventricle with hyperintensity on T2-weighted and FLAIR imaging, low-intensity on T1-weighted imaging, and enhanced margins on post-contrast T1-weighted imaging. The mass compressed the fourth ventricle, causing obstructive hydrocephalus. A second cystic lesion was found rostral to the cerebellum. After MRI, the cat experienced respiratory difficulties and the mass was removed by emergency craniectomy. Although the mass including the cyst wall was successfully removed, the cat was euthanized because spontaneous breathing did not return. The mass was histopathologically diagnosed as epidermoid cyst. A biopsy to the rostral cystic lesion had not been performed and therefore the etiology of this lesion remained unclear. This is the first case of feline intracranial epidermoid cyst in which MRI and surgical excision were performed. MRI findings were similar to those in humans and dogs, suggesting that imaging studies are useful in cats for the diagnosis of intercranial epidermoid cyst.
Radiographic and computed tomographic characteristics of intraluminal tracheal adenoma in a cat

Abstract:A 13-year-old spayed female Persian cat presented with dyspnea and nasal discharge. Thoracic radiography revealed a dome-shaped soft-tissue opacity in the carina. Computed tomography confirmed a soft tissue-attenuating mass in the carina and the left and right proximal main bronchi that appeared to arise from the tracheal wall. Tracheoscopy revealed an intraluminal broad-based mass with multilobulated borders at the same location. Histopathological evaluation revealed a benign neoplastic process of the glandular epithelial lineage, which was considered an adenoma. Tracheal adenomas should be included in the differential diagnosis of tracheal masses.

Abstract:Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery, Ahead of Print. ObjectivesThe aims of this study were to describe the radiographic features of cardiogenic pulmonary oedema (CPE) in a large group of cats with left-sided cardiac disease, and to determine the association between the radiographic features of CPE and the underlying cardiac disease.MethodsThoracic radiographs of cats with CPE and echocardiographic evidence of left-sided cardiac disease and left atrial enlargement (LAE) were reviewed, and cardiac silhouette, pulmonary vessels and pulmonary parenchyma evaluation were performed. Interstitial and/or alveolar patterns were classified according to their distribution (ie, diffuse, multifocal or focal) and location (ie, craniodorsal, cranioventral, caudodorsal, caudoventral and perihilar). A Student's t-test and Mann–Whitney U-test, or the two-proportion z-test, were used to compare continuous or categorical variables, respectively, between cats affected by the two most represented cardiac diseases, namely hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM).ResultsSeventy-one cats were included; among them, 46 (64.7%) and 13 (18.3%) had presented for HCM and RCM, respectively. Subjective and objective cardiomegaly, and subjective and objective LAE were detected in 97.2% and 91.9% of cats and in 80.3% and 40.6% of cats, respectively. Pulmonary artery abnormalities, in particular caudal pulmonary artery dilation, were found in 77.5% of cats. Pulmonary artery to pulmonary vein ratio = 1 was found in 71.8% and 55% cats on right lateral and ventrodorsal or dorsoventral views, respectively. Interstitial (57.8%) and mixed interstitial–alveolar (38%) pattern, multifocal (84.5%) and symmetrical (75%) distribution with prevalent ventrocaudal (65.6% of cats) and ventrocranial (60.9% of cats) locations were most frequently observed. No difference was found for any of these radiographic features between cats with HCM and RCM.Conclusions and relevanceModerate-to-severe cardiomegaly and LAE, caudal pulmonary artery and vein dilation, as well as a ventral, multifocal and symmetrical interstitial pulmonary pattern, were the main radiographic features of CPE in evaluated cats. Underlying cardiac disease did not influence the aforementioned radiographic features.

Diagnosis of a cystic lymphocyte-rich thymoma in a young cat

Abstract:Thymoma is one of the thymic epithelial tumors arising from the thymic epithelial cells of a variety of animal species including cat, cattle, dog, goat, horse, and pig. The cancer cells of thymoma are always localized within thymus. Feline thymoma was usually identified in the cranial mediastinum of elder cats. In this report, we present the full diagnostic characteristics of a young cat with a cranial mediastinal mass diagnosed as a cystic type B1 thymoma. A 3-year-old male neutered domestic short-haired cat was referred for further diagnosis due to the shortness of breath and pleural accumulation. One single cystic extra-pericardial mass was seen and the boundary between the mass and the surrounding tissue was clearly demarcated in three-view thoracic radiographs. Ultrasound showed pleural effusion and intra-thoracic mass. Pleural fluid biochemistry showed high level of triglycerides and complete blood count revealed the elevated number of basophils and high level of feline serum amyloid A (fSAA). Pleural effusion sediment cytology showed a large number of round cells, mainly small lymphocytes, as well as a moderate number of neutrophils and a small number of large lymphocytes. The high level of triglycerides in pleural fluid instead of serum and high level of fSAA seem to provide informative clues to the diagnosis of thymoma and are worthy of further investigation.

Abstract:Eine 2-jährige Norwegische Waldkatze wurde aufgrund von bilateralem, eitrigem Nasenausfluss und Stertor vorgestellt. Eine Computertomografie (CT) des Kopfes zeigte eine intranasale Masse der linken Nasenhöhle, die sich bis hinter die Tubenöffnungen erstreckte und den Nasenrachen vollständig verlegte. Die Rhinoskopie bestätigte eine rosafarbene, speckige Masse. In der CT zeigten sich beide Kompartimente des rechten Mittelohres mit weichteilisodensem Material gefüllt. Die knöcherne Umrandung des Mittelohres war nicht verändert. Nach endoskopisch gestützter Eröffnung des Trommelfells (Tympanozentese) erwies sich die Füllung in dem einsehbaren, dorsolateralen Kompartiment neben weißlichem, hochviskosem Sekret als klassisches polypöses Gewebe. Es wurde der Verdacht einer sekundären Otitis media aufgrund einer Abflussstörung geäußert. Mit einem endoskopisch-interventionellem Zugang durch das Nasenloch wurde die nasopharyngeale Masse für die histopathologische Untersuchung sowie zur Wiederherstellung des nasalen Atemweges und zur Ermöglichung der Tubendrainage abgetragen. Im Gegensatz zu Katzen mit klassischen, malignen Neoplasien der Nasenhöhle zeigten sich bei dem Kater mehrere Ansatzpunkte der Zubildung und mehrere wellenförmige Erhebungen bilateral in der nasopharyngealen Schleimhaut. Die zytologische und histopathologische Untersuchung identifizierte die Masse als Pilzgranulom im Rahmen einer in Deutschland nur selten beobachteten Kryptokokken-Infektion. Die molekulargenetische Analyse bestätigte eine Infektion mit Cryptococcus neoformans var. grubii . Ein einmaliges intranasales und nasopharyngeales endoskopisches Débridement hatte innerhalb von 14 Tagen zu einer deutlichen Verbesserung der klinischen Befunde und einer vollständigen Ausheilung des rechten Mittelohres (inklusive des Trommelfells) geführt, jedoch nicht zu einer vollständigen Heilung der Erkrankung. Der Kater wurde deshalb nach Erhalt des Cryptococcus -positiven Befundes über mehrere Wochen mit oraler Itraconazol-Lösung therapiert. Der Fallbericht zeigt, dass auch in Deutschland die Kryptokokkose bei Katzen vorkommen kann. In der Endoskopie zeigt sich eine nasopharyngeale Masse mit multiplen Ansatzpunkten, was für eine Neoplasie untypisch ist. Für eine Therapie ist neben der empfohlenen Entfernung der Masse nach aktuellem Wissensstand die orale Gabe von systemischen Antimykotika dringend anzuraten. A 2-year-old Norwegian Forest cat was presented for evaluation of bilateral purulent nasal discharge and stertorous breathing. A computed tomography (CT) scan of the head revealed an intranasal mass of the left nasal cavity extending behind the tube openings and completely obstructing the nasopharynx. Rhinoscopy confirmed a pinkish, shiny mass. CT scan showed both compartments of the right middle ear filled with abnormal soft tissue attenuating material. There was no change in the bony outline of the middle ear. In the endoscopic examination, after endoscopically assisted tympanocentesis, this material in the accessible dorsolateral compartment proved to be classic polypous tissue in addition to highly viscous glue-like secretions. A secondary otitis media due to a drainage disorder was suspected. Using an endoscopic-interventional approach through the nostril, the nasopharyngeal mass was removed for histopathological examination, in order to restore the nasal airway, and to allow tube drainage. In contrast to cats with classical malignant nasal cavity masses, the cat showed several attachment points of the mass and multiple undulating elevations bilaterally in the nasopharyngeal mucosa. Cytological and histopathological examination identified the mass as a fungal granuloma in the context of a cryptococcus infection only rarely observed in Germany. Clinical analysis of congenital bronchial cyst

Abstract:Objective To study the clinic features of congenital bronchial cyst.Methods Clinical data of 119 patients with congenital bronchial cysts confirmed by pathology after operation from Feb.2001 to Aug.2007 were reviewed retrospectively.Results There were 109 patients with intrapulmonary bronchogenic cysts and 10 patients with mediastinal bronchogenic cysts showed by X-ray and CT.Of the 109 patients,45 were air cysts,55 were liquid cysts and 9 were multiple pulmonary cysts.Intrapulmonary congenital bronchial cysts were diagnosed with few exceptions due to infections.Fifty-eight of 109 patients(53%) presented with cough and sputum production,22 cases accompanied by fever,47 presented with hemoptysis or blood-stained sputum.8 with chest pain.The CT imaging features were "bag included mass",which was characterized by a big bag surrounded by a little soft-tissue,or thin walled cavity,or multiple honeycomb or cystoid circular translucency.Seven of 10 patients with mediastinal bronchogenic cysts incidentally discovered on a radiograph obtained for other reasons were almost asymptomatic.Two cases presented with cough,sputum production due to compression of trachea,1 with dyspnea due to compression of oesophagus.The CT imaging features included isolated well-defined round shape or ovoid soft-tissue mass with isodensity,and mutual compression between the surrounding organs.Conclusion The main type of congenital bronchial cysts is intrapulmonary bronchogenic cysts.The clinical manifestations are cough,sputum production and hemoptysis,and the imaging feature is "bag included mass" on CT scan.The optimal treatment is surgical resection.
Pancreatic pseudocysts: clinical and endoscopic experience.

Abstract:Records of 51 patients with proven pancreatic pseudocyst (PC) were retrospectively reviewed to assess clinical and endoscopic variables. Thirty-nine had surgery after preoperative endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), six patients had ERCP only, and six patients had surgery without prior ERCP. Forty-two pancreatograms were obtained, and all were abnormal. PC communication with the pancreatic duct was present in 29 and ductal obstruction downstream from the PC was shown in 11 studies. Thirty-five cholangiograms were obtained and 19 were abnormal, including ductal narrowing in 16 and biliary calculi in three. PC contents were cultured intraoperatively in 29 patients, and 17 were positive. PC infection was highly correlated with the incidence of recurrent hospitalizations and with PC recurrence. PC infection did not occur significantly more often in patients with communicating PC or in those with preoperative ERCP. Factors that did not influence outcome included PC size, multiplicity, anatomic location, and PC communication with the pancreatic duct. Results from both ERCP and culture of PC contents add significantly to our knowledge of PC disease.
Computed tomographic features of exocrine pancreatic carcinomas in dogs and cats

Abstract:Exocrine pancreatic carcinomas are uncommon in dogs and cats, and diagnosis with diagnostic imaging can be challenging. This retrospective, multi-institutional, descriptive study was performed to evaluate the CT features of exocrine pancreatic carcinomas. The CT examinations of 18 dogs and 12 cats with exocrine pancreatic carcinomas diagnosed by cytology or histopathology were reviewed. The CT features of exocrine pancreatic carcinomas included a well-defined mass in 28/30 (93%) with contrast enhancement in 27/30 (90%), commonly heterogeneous 22/30 (73%); often with a nonenhancing fluid to soft tissue attenuating center 12/30 (40%). The right lobe of the pancreas was the most common location, 14/30 (47%), then the left lobe, 10/30 (33%), and the body, 6/30 (20%). Extrahepatic biliary duct dilation was present in six animals; 5/6 (83%) of the masses were located in the right pancreatic lobe. Additional findings included peripancreatic fat-stranding 17/30 (57%), lymphadenopathy 16/30 (57%), peripancreatic soft tissue nodules 12/30 (40%), and free fluid 10/30 (33%). When comparing the imaging features of dogs and cats, there was a large overlap in imaging characteristics. There was a significant difference between the height of the masses, with dogs having larger masses (P-value.0028). Lymphadenopathy was more likely in larger masses [increased height (P-value.029)]. Cats were significantly older than dogs (P-value.0355). Pancreatic carcinomas were commonly identified as masses with heterogeneous contrast enhancement and a nonenhancing fluid to soft tissue attenuating center with concurrent peripancreatic changes (fat-stranding and/or soft tissue nodules) and lymphadenopathy.

Abstract:Cysts are commonly seen on CT scans of the lungs, and diagnosis can be challenging. Clinical and radiographic features combined with a multidisciplinary approach may help differentiate among various disease entities, allowing correct diagnosis. It is important to distinguish cysts from cavities because they each have distinct etiologies and associated clinical disorders. Conditions such as emphysema, and cystic bronchiectasis may also mimic cystic disease. A simplified classification of cysts is proposed. Cysts can occur in greater profusion in the subpleural areas, when they typically represent paraseptal emphysema, bullae, or honeycombing. Cysts that are present in the lung parenchyma but away from subpleural areas may be present without any other abnormalities on high-resolution CT scans. These are further categorized into solitary or multifocal/diffuse cysts. Solitary cysts may be incidentally discovered and may be an age related phenomenon or may be a remnant of prior trauma or infection. Multifocal/diffuse cysts can occur with lymphoid interstitial pneumonia, Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome, tracheobronchial papillomatosis, or primary and metastatic cancers. Multifocal/diffuse cysts may be associated with nodules (lymphoid interstitial pneumonia, light-chain deposition disease, amyloidosis, and Langerhans cell histiocytosis) or with ground-glass opacities (Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia and desquamative interstitial pneumonia). Using the results of the high-resolution CT scans as a starting point, and incorporating the patient's clinical history, physical examination, and laboratory findings, is likely to narrow the differential diagnosis of cystic lesions considerably.
