Abstract:Among health care professionals, dentists are more prone to infection due to their direct contact with blood and saliva. This study highlights the level of compliance with infection control measures among dental students; and linked this to their knowledge and attitudes regarding infection control measures and proper vaccinations. The study is a multi-centre analytical cross-sectional survey. The sample size was 969 clinical years' students from governmental and private dental colleges in Sudan and Saudi Arabia. A pre-coded, pre-tested, and anonymous questionnaire consisted of seven categories of knowledge, attitude, awareness, and practices, including 40 questions, was answered. The study has linked knowledge, attitude, and practice in dental clinics with possible COVID-19 transmission in dental clinics. The results showed that the use of some Personal Protective Equipment was low in Sudan and moderate in Saudi Arabia (statistically significant, p < 0.001). Moderate percentage of Hepatitis B vaccination status, with low percentage of Post HBV serology, was reported (p < 0.001). The percentages of major causes of percutaneous and/or eye exposure/injury, for examples, were as follows: anesthesia (33.3–62.7%, p 0.006) and suture needle (17.5–39.4%, p 0.037). In conclusion, dental students in the present study had good knowledge and positive attitudes regarding infection control in general, but showed moderate compliance with the recommended infection control guidelines.

Abstract:Background A needle stick injury is a serious occupational health hazard in health care settings. Health care workers are at risk of bloodborne diseases and the psychological consequences of these injuries. This study aims to estimate the incidence of needle stick injuries among healthcare workers during the previous 12 months and to assess their knowledge, attitude, and practice toward these injuries. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted from 1st August 2019 till 15th February 2020, and included 786 healthcare workers in Abha city, Saudi Arabia. A structured questionnaire was used to collect the data. Results The incidence of needle stick injury among healthcare workers during the previous 12 months was (91/786) 11.57%. Nurses, females, and Saudis reported most needle stick injuries. More than half (52.7%) of the injuries went unreported. About 52.7% of needle stick injuries occurred during using sharp devices, and 42.9% of injuries happened in the patient room. The incidence of needle stick injury was significantly higher among those working at the secondary healthcare level ( p = 0.003) and those practicing surgery ( p < 0.001). Out of 786 participants, 94.7% knew the definition of needle stick injury, and 81.0% were aware of the procedure and guidelines to follow on sustaining a needle stick injury. Only 61.2% recognized that the recap of the needle is not recommended. Almost half of the participants (47.1%) agreed, and 33.6% strongly agreed that needle stick injury is preventable. A majority of healthcare workers (89.1%) had been vaccinated against Hepatitis B. Nearly 27.5% of healthcare workers incorrectly practiced recapping the needles with two hands and 8.7% bent needles before disposal. Recapping the needles was statistically significantly higher among healthcare workers who had a history of needle stick injury ( p = 0. 046). Conclusion Needle stick injury and its under reporting among healthcare professionals is still a prevalent risk. Raising awareness among healthcare workers and improving the reporting systems for needle stick injuries to ensure more protection and early use of post-exposure prophylaxis is required. Implementation of safety precautions and safe injection practices and providing engineered safety devices may further reduce the risk.

Abstract:Background: Needle stick injuries are serious occupational hazards in the transmission of a variety of bloodborne diseases, more than twenty pathogens can be transmitted through NSI including hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, and human immunodeficiency virus (AIDS) among healthcare workers. Objectives: Assess the knowledge, attitude and practice of health care workers towards needle stick injuries. Determine the prevalence of needle stick injuries among healthcare workers and its predisposing factors. Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study, a convenient sample of 260 health care workers was selected from Baghdad Teaching hospital and Ghazy Al Hariri hospital in Baghdad, Iraq. Data were collected by an anonymous questionnaire from January to June 2020. The collected data were analyzed by using statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS version 23). Results Prevalence of NSIs among HCWs was found to be 53.8%, which was higher in nurses (29.3%) and laboratory technicians (28.5%) followed by surgeon doctors (15.7%), assistant surgeons (13.6%) and dentists (12.9%) .The highest number of needle stick injuries occurred by recapping of needles (41.4%) followed by during drug administration (27.9%), from hand to hand (10.7%) and during blood drawing (7.9%). A proportion of (64.5%) of health care workers whom sustained needle stick injury had reported their Injury. Doctors scored better than others regarding mean scores of knowledge, attitude and practice. There was a highly significant association among knowledge, attitude and practice scores of the HCWs (P<0.001). A considerable percentage of the participants (80.2%) were completely immunized against HBV. Conclusions: The study showed a high prevalence of NSIs among health care workers. The score of knowledge was high, moreover acceptable responses were obtained in most attitude and practice statements, except for recapping of needles statements.

Abstract:Introduction Needlestick and sharp injuries (NSI) continue to pose a significant risk for healthcare workers (HCWs) at their workplace. The incidence rate of NSI in hospitals depends on multiple risk factors. This study aimed to analyze the epidemiological characteristics of NSI among HCWs and the risk factors influencing NSI rates and to provide further direction for NSI prevention in secondary care hospitals. Methods This study included all the NSI cases reported by HCWs in King Abdul Aziz Hospital, Makkah from 2005 to 2017. All the cases were recorded in the Exposure Prevention Information Network (EPINet™) database (International Healthcare Worker Safety Center, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, USA). The study was executed by using data loaded in the EPINet™ Program, the hospital electronic recording system Medica Plus, and analyzed by the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences program (SPSS Inc. Released 2007. SPSS for Windows, Version 15.0. Chicago, SPSS Inc.). Results During the period of study, 524 NSI cases were reported. The mean incidence rate per 100 occupied beds with 95% CI was 25.43 (22.05-28.81) and a statistically insignificant decline in NSI incidence rate was observed from 2005 to 2017. The maximal annual incidence rate (35.63 per 100 occupied beds) was registered in 2010 and the minimal value (14.84 per 100 occupied beds) in 2013. Injuries were mainly reported in patient rooms/wards (30.2%) and most frequently by nurses (56.1%). The mean of incident reporting within 24 hours was 74.0, 95% CI (67.19-80.73). This rate showed a statistically significant (p=0.01) increasing trend of 5.0% per annum. The mean of identified source patients - 83.5, 95% CI (79.13- 87.23) - possessed an annual 2.1% rise during 2005-2017 which was statistically insignificant (p=0.7). Cases occurred after the use/before disposal of items in 45.0% of cases and during the use of items in 44.7%. Hollow-bore needles caused injuries in 46.5% of incidents. Blood sample taking - 23.2% and IV or arterial line insertion/removal/manipulation (19.1%) - presented exposure-prone procedures posing the highest risk. Conclusions The results of this study revealed a high rate of NSI in the hospital. NSI rate in hospitals was impacted by a group of related risk factors, particularly, the location of risk (patient room/ward, intensive care unit (ICU), and emergency room (ER) depending on job intensity, the kind and frequency of exposure-prone procedures (blood sample taking, IV or arterial line insertion/removal/manipulation) and handling of hollow-bore and solid needle connected to the main healthcare professional group at risk (nurses). Future direction in NSI prevention requires a complex approach of continuous staff education along with the usage of devices with safety features.
Epidemiology of Needlestick Injury Exposures among Dental Students During Clinical Training in a Major Teaching Institution of China: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:Background/purpose: Dental students are particularly vulnerable for needlestick injuries (NSI). However, the epidemiology of NSI exposures among Chinese dental students was rarely reported. The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of NSI among dental students in a major teaching institution of China, and to identify associated factors. Materials and methods: A self-administrated online questionnaire was developed based on previously published studies, and distributed to dental students of Class 2011-2015 recruited from Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology. Results: Two hundred and sixty-eight dental students including 38.8% of males and 61.2% of females (response rate of 90.0%) completed the survey. Approximately 36.2% of the respondents had sustained at least one NSI. A total of 112 NSI cases were reported. The majority of NSIs were related to the procedures of local anesthesia administration (15.2%) and tooth cleaning or scaling (15.2%). Syringe needles, dental burs and ultrasonic chips were the most notorious devices. Statistical analysis showed significant distribution in NSI occurrence between July-September and October-December. The main cause was lapse in concentration (67.9%), fol-lowed by fatigue (22.3%). Up to 66.1% of the exposures occurred when the student was working alone, while only 10.7% with assisting. Unfortunately, 26.8% of the incidents were under-re-ported. Conclusion: Dental students are prone to needlestick injuries. The present study clearly re-veals a need for increased awareness of NSI prevention among dental students. Abstract:Background: Dental students are vulnerable to needlestick injuries (NSIs) due to their inadequate training. However, the global prevalence of NSI among dental students is unknown. Aim: To determine the pooled prevalence among dental students, epidemiological profile, and risk factors for NSI. Methods: A systematic review was performed in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. The review protocol was registered at the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (CRD 42022312778). Eligible studies were identified from PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, OVID, and EBSCO databases. A meta-analysis with a random effects model was performed to estimate the pooled prevalence, and meta-regression was conducted to explore heterogeneity among studies. Findings: A total of 25 studies from 15 countries met the inclusion criteria. The estimated pooled prevalence of NSI among dental students was 44% (95% confidence interval: 38e51%). Local anaesthesia, tooth cleaning or scaling, and waste disposal were associated with highest risk for NSI. Most studies observed under-reporting of NSI. Dental students had inadequate knowledge regarding post-exposure management. Conclusion: Dental students had a high prevalence and low reporting rate of NSI exposure. Inadequate knowledge might increase the probability of NSI exposure.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Health care workers are more prone to occupational hazards, like needlestick injuries, blood, and body fluid exposures. Needlestick injuries (NSI) are responsible for the transmission of serious infections like HIV, HBV and HCV. The occurrence of needlestick injuries is highest among the nurses. The objective of the study was to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice regarding needlestick injuries among nursing faculty in Justice K. S. Hegde Charitable Hospital, Mangalore. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted among the nursing faculty working in a tertiary care hospital based on a structured questionnaire, and the obtained data were further analysed statistically. RESULTS The percentage of needle stick injury was 13.3 % among 75 nursing faculty. 94.7 % of the nurses were aware of the universal precaution guidelines and 84 % knew about post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). 36 % of nurses knew the preventive guidelines' full details, but 50.7 % of the nurses were unaware of it. Many participants were aware that NSI transmits HIV (92 %) and Hepatitis B (68 %). The leading cause of NSI might be heavy work (54.7 %) followed by hurried procedures (41.3 %). 29.3 % of the nurses were still inclined to recapping the needle after use. 68 % of the nurses were mindful of washing hands with only water post exposure. 28 % were not willing to report a NSI. 80 % of nurses were fully immunised against Hepatitis B. CONCLUSIONS The best way to reduce NSI is to impart knowledge and awareness to the faculty. Our study showed that the knowledge, attitude, and practice among the nursing faculty were promising but requires to be further strengthened. Abstract:Abstract Dentistry involves the use of many instruments that are sharp and deal with blood and saliva that may be contaminated with either HBV, HCV, or HIV. Professional exposure of healthcare workers (as dentists and dental students) to blood or other potentially infected biological material may cause transmission of infection to them. Transmission of infection can occur through several routes; mucosal, cutaneous, or percutaneous. Transmission of pathogens may result in an asymptomatic infection. This situation may last for weeks or months until symptoms appear. Some patients are, thus, not aware of their infectious status and may carry an asymptomatic infection when visiting a dental practice. Aim of study The objective of the current study was to detect the level of knowledge among dental students regarding the human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis B virus, and hepatitis C virus. The attitude and risk perception of the students about the treatment of patients with these viruses were also assessed. In our study, we determined also the relationship between knowledge, attitude, and risk perception. Methodology Six hundred eighty responded students were included in this study. They were selected from all 5 years of study to form 2 equal groups (340 students in each group), group I (junior students): 1st, 2nd, and 3rd years and group II (senior students): 4th and 5th years. The questionnaires (distributed to the students) included five main parts: the sociodemographic part, the knowledge part, the attitude part, the risk perception part, and the self-evaluation part. Results (1) The correct answer score was higher in group II than in group I (58.54% and 41.46% respectively). (2) The professional attitude score was higher in group II than in group I (60.81% and 39.19% respectively). (3) The positive risk perception was higher in group II than in group I (56.20% and 43.80% respectively). Conclusion The level of knowledge plays an important role in forming attitudes and risk perceptions toward patients with HBV, HCV, and HIV. This is of concern in dentistry and other similar fields like otolaryngology.

Abstract:Objective: The purpose of study was to identify the knowledge, attitude and practice of prevention NSIs among nursing students in Henan province, China. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 400 nursing students in 7 nursing education institutes in Henan province during June to July 2019 was performed. Structured questionnaires were used to assess participants' knowledge, attitudes and practices of prevention NSIs. Chi-square tests were used to assess correlations between variables. Multivariate regression analysis was used to test the factors related to prevention NSIs. Results: It has shown that 67% of nursing students suffered at least one NSI during their internship. The most common cause of injury was the injection process, the venous catheter management process, and the disposing all kinds of needle waste process (p<0.05). Female students showed more than three times greater chance of intentionally breaking needle after injection (OR 2.50, 95%CI 1.03-6.08). Capping needles always used by two hand (OR 0.40, 95%CI 0.19-0.85) and separating the needle from the syringe by hand after injection (OR 0.23, 95%CI 0.16-0.57) were negatively related to bachelor students. Conclusion: Nursing students show high prevalence of NSIs and lack of prevention knowledge, attitude, and practice. Abstract:BACKGROUND: Occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogen is a significant risk to health-care workers. In any teaching hospital apart from regular health-care workers and employees, there are significant population of students and trainee. It is important to assess the health-care worker in hospital which has maximum chances of exposure to these pathogens. The aim of this study is to determine the most susceptible job group for needlestick injury (NSI) reported in a newly established teaching medical institute in the Western part of Rajasthan, India.METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of data of NSI occurred during September 2014 to January 2017.RESULTS: Sixty three NSIs were reported during the study. Nursing students were the most vulnerable group who reported maximum number of NSI. Among the nursing students, 72% were completely vaccinated against hepatitis B virus.CONCLUSIONS: Nursing students are at utmost risk for NSIs, the prevention of which requires regular training and education.

Abstract:Abstract Background: Infections acquired in healthcare facilities have become an increasingly challenging issue worldwide. The prevention of infectious diseases is a critical issue since healthcare workers develop acquired infections while providing services to patients. However, infection prevention and control are challenging, especially in healthcare facilities. Thus, this study aimed to determine the level of knowledge, attitudes, and practices among healthcare workers in King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital (KKESH). Methodology: A cross-sectional survey was conducted at KKESH, total of 285 healthcare workers, including physicians, nurses, optometrists, radiographers, and ophthalmic assistants were investigated. A close-ended, self-administered questionnaire was used to assess knowledge, attitudes, and practices toward infection control prevention measures. Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 20. Chi-squared was computed to identify associations between factors within the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of infection prevention. Results: The study showed that 81% of respondents had good knowledge, 82% had a positive attitude, and only 59% had safe infection prevention practices. Doctors were more knowledgeable than other staff, and nurses showed a high level of positive attitude and safe practices. There was a statistically significant correlation between age, occupation, education, and years of experience with infection prevention practices among healthcare providers (P<0.05). The availability of infection prevention guidelines was associated with excellent knowledge, a positive attitude, and safe practices. Conclusion: The findings of this study revealed that most healthcare workers had adequate knowledge and displayed a positive attitude, but practices toward infection control were not sufficient. Therefore, regular training, that contain educational programs, should be supported to maintain the highest level of practice.

Abstract:Background/purpose Exploration of early practicing dental professionals' awareness and attitude toward inferior alveolar nerve block IANB will directly inform efforts to improve clinical practices and ensure patient safety. The aim was to highlight the students, interns, and junior dentists' awareness and attitude toward the IANB, failure, and related complications in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Materials and methods An open web-based survey prepared according to the Checklist for reporting results of Internet e-surveys CHERRIES recommendations was designed and carried out across different regions of the KSA. The questionnaire was composed of four main sections including the participant's details, and qualifications; inferior alveolar nerve block delivery; participants' education, and training-related questions; and attitudes toward proposed solutions to overcome the related failure and complications. Results 262 participants completed the questionnaire (94 dental students, 79 interns, and 89 junior dentists). There was a significant difference in the following findings: males performed IANBs more frequently than females ( P < 0.05); females, students, and private practice/University type showed less attendance to workshops and seminars on IANB with more need for training ( P < 0.05); females were more in agreement with ''continuous education courses'' and ''workshops done by specialists'' to propose solutions to overcome IANB failure ( P < 0.05). The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that qualification and attendance of a training course were strong predictors of participants' readiness to manage IANB complications ( P < 0.05). Conclusion The findings emphasize how crucial it is for early dental practitioners to participate in continuing professional development programs to enhance their capacity to administer IANB and handle complications.

Assessing the Knowledge of HPV-Associated Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma, HPV Vaccination, and Practice Scope among Saudi Dental Students in the Western Region

Abstract:(1) Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is significantly associated with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HPV-OPSCC), which is one of the fastest-growing cancer incidences globally. Dental practitioners play a crucial role in the primary and secondary prevention of HPV-OPSCC. There is little known about dental students' awareness regarding HPV-OPSCC and HPV vaccination, as well as their intention to promote 'primordial prevention' among their patients. HPV vaccine, and the extent of their professional responsibilities. (2) Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the western region of Saudi Arabia and involved undergraduate dental students (n = 688) from six public and private dental schools. Participants were requested to complete a sequential-section anonymous online survey, with 257 successfully completing all sections of the questionnaire. The association between participant characteristics and HPV-OPSCC, HPV vaccination awareness ratings, and perceived engagement in prevention were analyzed using ANOVA and chi-squared testing. A binary logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine the variables linked to these outcomes. (3) Results: Generally, the overall level of awareness of HPV-OPSCC and HPV vaccination was acceptable, with an average score of 53.44 ± 29.3 out of 100. However, a significant knowledge gap was observed, with 53% of respondents being unaware of the common sites for HPV-OPSCC and 63.8% being uninformed of the appropriate age for HPV vaccination. Females and those with a prior history of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) had considerably higher levels of HPV vaccination knowledge (p < 0.05). The participants showed a favorable attitude towards their responsibility of informing patients about HPV-OPSCC and advocating HPV immunization. (4) Conclusions: This study underscores the need to enhance dental students' understanding of HPV-OPSCC and HPV immunization, enabling them to effectively engage in primary and secondary preventative efforts against HPV-OPSCC.

Knowledge, attitudes, and practices of anaesthesia personnel towards needle stick injuries in a tertiary care hospital

Abstract:The cross-sectional, prospective study was conducted at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi. A questionnaire was distributed amongst anaesthesia personnel, including faculty, residents, medical officers, technicians, recovery room nurses and pain nurses working in the Department of Anaesthesiology for >3 months. Knowledge, attitudes and practices were assessed according to the operational definitions. Of the 162 respondents, 106(65.4%) were males and 56(34.6%) were females. The overall mean age was 31±6.2 years. Adequate knowledge was found in 41(25%) subjects. Overall, 56(35%) respondents reported having had a needle-stick injury, and, among them, 49(87.5%) had a positive attitude. Also, 156(96.3%) participants followed good practices. Although entirely preventable, needle stick injuries were found to be common, indicating the need for proper implementation or revision of existing policies and attainment of safe needle devices.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is a chronic oral mucosal disease characterized by progressive deposition of collagen in the subepithelial connective tissue and epithelial atrophy. Previous studies have shown that at 330-nm excitation, the 380- and 460-nm emission peaks of the auto-fluorescence spectra for oral mucosal tissues reflect the collagen content in the subepithelial connective tissue and the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADH) content in the epithelial cells, respectively. Therefore, at 330-nm excitation OSF mucosa may have a higher 380-nm emission peak and a lower 460-nm emission peak than the normal oral mucosa (NOM). METHODS To test the above hypothesis, we measured the in vivo auto-fluorescence spectra of 59 OSF mucosal sites and compared the measured spectra with auto-fluorescence spectra obtained from 15 NOM samples from 15 healthy volunteers, five samples of friction hyperkeratosis (histologic diagnosis, hyperkeratosis and acanthosis) on OSF buccal mucosa (FHOSF), and 29 samples of oral leukoplakia (histologic diagnosis, hyperkeratosis and acanthosis) on OSF buccal mucosa (OLOSF). RESULTS We found that the spectrum of the OSF mucosa had a significantly higher 380-nm emission peak and a significantly lower 460-nm emission peak than the spectra of NOM, FHOSF, and OLOSF samples. When the mean (+/-SD) fluorescence intensities at 380 +/- 15 nm (I380 +/- 15 nm) and 460 +/- 15 nm (I460 +/- 15 nm) emission peaks and the mean ratio of I460 +/- 15 nm/I380 +/- 15 nm were compared between groups, we found that OSF group had a significantly higher mean value of I380 +/- 15 nm, a significantly lower mean value of I460 +/- 15 nm, and a significantly lower mean ratio of I460 +/- 15 nm/I380 +/- 15 nm than the NOM, FHOSF, and OLOSF groups (P < 0.001). However, no significant differences in the mean values of I380 +/- 15 nm, I460 +/- 15 nm, and ratio of I460 +/- 15 nm/I380 +/- 15 nm were found between NOM and FHOSF or OLOSF samples as well as between FHOSF and OLOSF samples (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION Because OSF mucosa has a very unique pattern of auto-fluorescence spectrum, we conclude that auto-fluorescence spectroscopy is a good method for real-time diagnosis of OSF.

Prevalence and Characteristics of Needlestick Injuries among Dental Interns During Their First-Year Clinical Training: an Observational Study

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Dental interns are vulnerable to needlestick injuries (NSI). The objectives of this study were to examine the prevalence and characteristics of NSI exposures among dental interns during their first-year clinical training, assess risk factors, and evaluate reporting behaviours.METHODS:An online survey was conducted among dental interns of Class 2011-2017 at Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology (PKUSS), China. The self-administrated questionnaire consisted of information on demographic profiles, NSI characteristics, and reporting practices. The outcomes were presented by descriptive statistics. A multivariate regression analysis was performed to assess NSI sources using a forward step-wise approach.RESULTS:A total of 407 dental interns completed the survey (response rate 91.9%, 407/443), and 23.8% sustained at least one NSI. The mean number of NSIs per intern was 0.28 during the first clinical year. More occupation exposures occurred from October to December, between 13:00-15:00. Syringe needles were the most frequent sources, followed by dental burs, suture needles, and ultrasonic chips. The risk of peer-inflicted NSIs in the department of Paediatric Dentistry was 12.1 times higher than that in Oral Surgery (OR 12.1, 95% CI: 1.4-101.4). Appropriately 64.9% NSIs occurred when chairside assistants were absent. Compared to working alone, the risk of peer-inflicted NSIs was 32.3 times higher when providing chairside assistance (OR 32.3, 95% CI: 7.2-145.4). The left-hand index finger was the most commonly injured site. About 71.4% of exposures were reported in paperwork.CONCLUSIONS:Dental interns are susceptible to NSIs during their first-year clinical training. Extra attention should be paid to syringe needles, dental burs, suture needles, and ultrasonic chips. The lack of chairside assistance is hazardous regarding NSIs. The training of chairside assistance of the first-year dental interns should be enhanced. First-year dental interns are required to increase their awareness of ignored behaviors related to NSI exposures.

Abstract:Background: Research is crucial for the scientific progress of the health of individuals, communities, and systems. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge, attitude, motives and barriers among dentists and dental students in the western region of Saudi Arabia. Objective: This study aims to assess the level of knowledge, attitude, motives and barriers toward scientific research among dentists and dental students in the western region of Saudi Arabia. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 467 dentists and dental students using a convenience sampling method from seven dental colleges, major governmental and private dental clinics in the Western region of Saudi Arabia. We used a validated self-report questionnaire to collect data and assess the knowledge of, attitude towards and barriers to scientific research. Results: The participants (who are dentists and dental students) have a total knowledge score of m=4.57, SD=2.46, which is slightly lower than the midpoint. Participants who work in governmental clinic were significantly (F (2,464) =13.71, p<0.001) more knowledgeable than those who worked in private clinic and the students. Most participants had positive general and personal attitudes toward scientific research. Of the participants, 40.5% to 60.4% were involved in research activities, and 37.3% have submitted or published scientific articles. The most common motive for scientific research was receiving credit for post-graduate application (58.46%). The most common organizational barrier to conduct a research was the difficulty of finding research supervisor (39.19%) and lack of time due to work overload (32.55%). While most common personal barriers were lack of knowledge/skills (38.76%), lack of personal time (36.83%) and receiving credit for postgraduate application. Conclusion: Saudi dentists and dental students had a moderate level of knowledge and practice in research, but their attitude was highly positive. More efforts are needed to facilitate scientific dental research including supervisors’ availability and time allocation for research. The study has some limitations including using convenience sample from one region and self-report questionnaire that decreases the external validity of the study and increases the potential for self-reported biases.

Abstract:Occupational health and safety aims to promote and maintain optimal physical, mental, and social health for workers in their occupations. Within Saudi Arabia, adequate information must be gathered to address the various factors influencing occupational health and safety among nursing students to minimize occupational health hazards and ensure a safe clinical environment. This cross-sectional study was conducted in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, between April and September 2023, involving 150 nursing students. Data collection included questions to gather sociodemographic information, and contained an instrument assessing the participants' knowledge of occupational health and safety and evaluation of risk control in clinical environments. Blood and other bodily fluids, workplace violence, needle-stick injuries, and injuries caused by sharp instrument tools were identified as the most prevalent occupational risks among the participants. Most nursing students were aware of occupational health and safety, with a high level of compliance with occupational health and safety measures and personal protective equipment use. We also identified a statistically significant correlation between occupational health and safety knowledge and risk control evaluation among nursing students. To ensure a safe and beneficial clinical training area, student nurses must complete extensive occupational health and safety courses before moving to clinical areas to reduce potential hazards that may affect their lives.
