Abstract:Here, a novel targeted nanostructure complex was designed as an alternative to the traditional treatment approaches for breast cancer. A delivery system utilizing CuS nanoparticles (CuS NPs) was developed for the purpose of targeted administration of doxorubicin (Dox), an anticancer agent. To regulate Dox release, chitosan (CS), a biodegradable and hydrophilic polymer with biocompatible properties, was applied to coat the Dox-loaded CuS NPs. Furthermore, AS1411 aptamer, served as a targeting agent for breast cancer cells (MCF-7 and 4T1 cells), was conjugated with CS-Dox-CuS NPs effectively. To assess the effectiveness of APT-CS-CuS NPs, various methods such as flow cytometry analysis, MTT assay, fluorescence imaging, and in vivo antitumor efficacy were employed. The hollow core and porous surface of CuS NPs improved the Dox loading capacity and entrapment efficiency (almost 100%). The rate of drug release at the tumor site (citrate buffer with pH 5.6) exhibited a marked increase in comparison to that observed within the physiological environment (phosphate buffer with pH 7.4). The targeted formulation (APT-CS-Dox-CuS NPs) significantly increased cytotoxicity of the Dox payload in target cells, including 4T1 (p ≤ 0.0001 (****)) and MCF7 (p ≤ 0.01 (**)) cells compared to CHO cells. Moreover, the ability of tumor growth inhibition of the targeted system was significantly (p ≤ 0.05 (*)) more than free Dox in tumor-bearing mice. The findings indicate that the targeted formulation augmented effectiveness and specificity while minimizing harm to non-targeted cells, signifying its potential as a sophisticated cancer drug delivery system.

Abstract:Drug delivery efficiency often affects chemotherapy outcome due to dense collagen barrier in tumor environment. Here, we report a nanoparticle capable of pH and glutathione dual-responsive drug delivery to enhance the efficacy of breast cancer chemotherapy. Maleiminated polyethylene glycol and polylactide block copolymer were synthesized as a core material, doxorubicin was encapsulated into the nanoparticle by self-assembly. Thiocollagenase and maleimide were connected on the nanoparticle surface by click chemistry, and further coated with chondroitin sulfate as a protective layer to form dual-responsive doxorubicin nanoparticle. The results showed that the nanoparticle had the ability to penetrate deep tumor tissue, to target on CD44 of cancer cell, and to release doxorubicin in cancer cell in response to pH and glutathione signals, demonstrating superior anticancer efficacy in breast cancer-bearing mice. In conclusion, the dual-responsive nanoparticle could be used as a drug carrier to enhance drug delivery in breast cancer chemotherapy.

Abstract:In this work, we report the fabrication and functional demonstration of a kind of dually responsive nanoparticles (NPs) as a potential drug delivery vector. The pH value, corresponding to the acidic microenvironment at the tumor site, and mannitol, to the extracellular trigger agent, were employed as the dually responsive factors. The function of dual responses was achieved by breaking the dynamic covalent bonds between phenylboronic acid (PBA) groups and diols at low pH value (pH 5.0) and/or under the administration of mannitol, which triggered the decomposition of the complex NPs and the concomitant release of anticancer drug of doxorubicin (DOX) loaded inside the NPs. The NPs were composed of modified chitosan (PQCS) with quaternary ammonium and PBA groups on the side chains, heparin (Hep), and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), in which quaternary ammonium groups offer the positive charge for the cell-internalization of NPs, PBA groups serve for the formation of dynamic bonds in responding to pH change and mannitol addition, PVA furnishes the NPs with diol groups for the interaction with PBA groups and the formation of dynamic NPS, and Hep plays the roles of reducing the cytotoxicity of highly positively-charged chitosan and forming of complex NPs for DOX up-loading. A three-step fabrication process of drug-loaded NPs was described, and the characterization results were comprehensively demonstrated. The sustained drug release from the drug-loaded NPs displayed obvious pH and mannitol dependence. More specifically, the cumulative DOX release was increased more than 1.5-fold at pH 5.0 with 20 mg mL−1 mannitol. Furthermore, the nanoparticles were manifested with effective antitumor efficient and apparently enhanced cytotoxicity in response to the acidic pH value and/or mannitol.
The pH-sensitive chondroitin sulphate-based nanoparticles for co-delivery of doxorubicin and berberine enhance the treatment of breast cancer

Abstract:In the tumor microenvironment (TME), cancer associated fibroblasts (CAFs) facilitate drug resistance and tumor metastasis. Therefore, more and more attention has been focused on the regulation of TME by preventing the cross-talk between tumor cells and CAFs in the treatment of breast cancer. In this study, we have combined the benefits of deep drug penetration, pH sensitivity, and tumor-targeting delivery to prepare chondroitin sulphate (CS)-based nanomicelles (BBR/CS-DOX) for the co-delivery of doxorubicin (DOX) and berberine (BBR). A unique MCF-7 + MRC-5 co-cultured cell model and 4 T1 + NIH3T3 co-implanted mice model, were established to simulate the TME of breast cancer (BC). As expected, BBR/CS-DOX could accumulate in tumor egion, be taken up by both tumor cells and CAFs, and improve drug absorption and retention. Compared with free drugs, BBR/CS-DOX demonstrated stonger pro-apoptotic and anti-metastatic effect in vitro and in vivo, respectively the histological studies showed that BBR/CS-DOX efficiently prevented the activation of fibroblasts, inhibited extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition, and decreased tumor angiogenesis, showing superior anti-tumor efficacy. In summary, BBR/CS-DOX has the potential to significantly enhance the therapeutic effect of breast cancer through inhibiting the "CAFs-tumor cells" crosstalk, and has promising clinical application prospects.
Ph-Sensitive Chitosan-Derived Nanoparticles As Doxorubicin Carriers for Effective Anti-Tumor Activity: Preparation and in Vitro Evaluation.

Abstract:pH-sensitive self-aggregated nanoparticles (SNPs), based on amphiphilic deoxycholic acid (DOCA) modified carboxymethyl chitosan (DCMC), were prepared for delivery of the anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX). DCMCs with different degrees of substitution (DS) of DOCA were initially synthesized and characterized. Based on self-aggregation, DCMC formed nanoparticles with size ranging from 87 to 174 nm. The critical aggregation concentration (CAC) decreased on increasing the DS of DOCA. Moreover, the DCMC SNPs showed an acidic pH-induced aggregation and deformation behavior. The DOX-loaded SNPs ([D]NP) exhibited a sustained drug release manner, which could be accelerated by an acidic pH, but delayed by a higher DS of DOCA. Antitumor efficacy results showed that [D]NP could suppress both sensitive and resistant MCF-7 cells effectively in a dose- and time-dependent manner. The enhanced cellular uptake and greater retention of [D]NP in drug-resistant cells, as evidenced by confocal microscopy and flow cytometry, contributed to a superior efficacy of [D]NP over free DOX. These results suggest the potential of DCMC SNPs as carriers for the hydrophobic drug DOX for effective cancer therapy against drug-resistant tumors.

Abstract:The application of cytotoxic chemotherapeutics in cancer therapy has been largely restricted by their lack of selectivity. Despite the existence of numerous targeted delivery systems, it is practically challenging to develop one single system to simultaneously cover tumor-targeted delivery of chemotherapeutics at the tissue, cellular, and subcellular levels. To solve this problem, pH-responsive core-shell structured nanoparticles (CSNPs) were self-assembled in this study to provide triple-stage targeted delivery of doxorubicin (DOX) from the injection site to the nuclei of cancer cells. Amino-functionalized mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) were doubly modified with TAT peptide and acid-cleavable polyethylene glycol (PEG) as the DOX-loaded cationic core. The anionic shell was constituted by galactose-modified poly(allylamine hydrochloride)-citraconic anhydride, a hepato-carcinoma-targeting polymer with charge-reversible property. In vitro results showed that PEG effectively reduced protein adsorption and phagocytic capture of CSNPs in the circulating blood (pH 7.4), thus facilitating passive accumulation in tumors (tissue level). Following PEG detachment via acidic hydrolysis in tumor microenvironment (pH 6.5), the exposed galactose ligands endowed CSNPs with active internalization into hepato-carcinoma cells (cellular level). Afterward, the acidity in endosomes and lysosomes (pH 5.0) triggered the conversion of anionic shell into positive charges, leading to core-shell disassembly and subsequent TAT-mediated delivery of DOX to the nuclei (subcellular level). Importantly, the efficiencies of each targeting moiety were nicely preserved when combining together in CSNPs. As a result, improved tumorous distribution and potent therapeutic efficacy of CSNPs were noted in tumor-bearing mice at a relatively low dose. CSNPs therefore provide an efficient and nontoxic platform for the targeted delivery of antitumor drugs.

Abstract:Efficient intracellular drugs delivery and accumulation are the key determinant for overcoming tumor multidrug resistance (MDR). To realize this purpose, dual-pH responsive chitosan nanoparticles (DCCA/DOX-NPs) were fabricated to treat MDR tumor in human breast cancer (MCF-7/ADR). The particles were firstly sensitive to tumor extracellular pH 6.5, contributing to the surface charge reversal (−6.32 → 11.45 mV) by the cleavage of β-carboxylic amide, which greatly increased cellular uptake efficiency. DCCA/DOX-NPs further responded to lower intracellular pH 5.0, thereby triggering DOX and cinnamaldehyde (CA) release by the cleavage of Schiff base. Cells assays verified that dual-pH sensitive particles caused higher toxicity in MDR tumor cells. Furthermore, the particles could overcome tumor resistance by decreasing intracellular levels of ATP and PARP-1, eventually receiving stronger antitumor efficiency in vivo (84.94%). Overall, this amphiphilic chitosan nanosystem with various bioactivities could work as an alternative promising for treating MDR tumor.

Abstract:Objectives Polymeric nanoparticles have been extensively studied as drug carriers. Chitosan and its derivatives have attracted significant attention in this regard but have limited application because of insolubility in biological solution. In this work, we attempted to utilize cholesterol-modified glycol chitosan (CHGQ self-aggregated nanoparticles to increase aqueous solubility, and to reduce side effects and enhance the antitumour efficacy of the anticancer drug doxorubicin. Methods CHGC nanoparticles were loaded with doxorubicin by a dialysis method, and their characteristics were determined by transmission electron microscopy examination, light-scattering study, in-vitro drug-release study, pharmacokinetic study in rats and in-vivo antitumour activity in mice. Key findings The resulting doxorubicin-loaded CHGC nanoparticles (DCNs) formed self-assembled aggregates in aqueous medium. From the observation by transmission electron microscopy, DCNs were almost spherical in shape. The mean diameters of these nanoparticles determined by dynamic light scattering were in the range of 237-336 nm as the doxorubicin-loading content increased from 1.73% to 9.36%. In-vitro data indicated that doxorubicin release from DCNs was much faster in phosphate-buffered saline at pH 5.5 than at pH 6.5 and 7.4, and the release rate was dependent oil the loading content of doxorubicin in these nanoparticles. It was observed that DCN-16 (drug loaded content: 9.36%) exhibited prolonged circulation time in rat plasma and showed higher antitumour efficacy against S180-bearing mice than free doxorubicin. Conclusions These results indicated that CHGC nanoparticles had potential as a carrier for insoluble anticancer drugs in cancer therapy.
Hybrid PEGylated chitosan/PLGA nanoparticles designed as pH-responsive vehicles to promote intracellular drug delivery and cancer chemotherapy

Abstract:To achieve effective intracellular anticancer drug release for boosted antitumor efficacy, the acidity-responsive nanovehicles for doxorubicin (DOX) delivery were fabricated by tailor-made co-assembly of amphiphilic PEGylated chitosan20k and hydrophobic poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) segments at pH 8.5. The attained DOX-loaded PEGylated chitosan20k/PLGA nanoparticles (DOX-PC20kPNs) were characterized to have a spherical shape composed of drug-encapsulated chitosan20k/PLGA-constituted solid core surrounded by hydrophilic PEG shells. Compared to non-pH-sensitive DOX-loaded PLGA nanoparticles (DOX-PNs), the DOX-PC20kPNs displayed outstanding colloidal stability under serum-containing condition and tended to swell in weak acidic milieu upon increased protonation of chitosan20k within hybrid cores, thus accelerating drug release. The in vitro cellular uptake and cytotoxicity studies revealed that the DOX-PC20kPNs after being endocytosed by prostate TRAMP-C1 cancer cells rapidly liberated drug, thus promoting drug accumulation in nuclei to enhance anticancer potency. Moreover, the hydrated PEG shells of DOX-PC20kPNs remarkably reduced their uptake by macrophage-like RAW264.7 cells. Importantly, in vivo animal findings showed that the DOX-PC20kPNs exhibited the capability of inhibiting TRAMP-C1 tumor growth superior to free hydrophobic DOX molecules and DOX-PNs, demonstrating the great potential in cancer chemotherapy.

Abstract:In the current study, a combination of precipitation polymerization and modified sol-gel methods were developed to prepare the novel hyaluronic acid-decorated pH and redox dual-stimuli responsive poly(methacrylic acid)/mesoporous organosilica nanoparticles with a core-shell structure for controlled drug release. The nanocarriers have a proper particle size of 10 %, due to the mesoporous shell. In vitro drug release profiles indicated that the systems had good stability under normal physiological media, while the cumulative release was significantly accelerated at the simulated tumor tissue condition, which shows pH and redox-dependent drug release. In vitro cell viability and apoptosis assay proved that the obtained nanomaterials possess relatively good biocompatibility, and drug-loaded targeted nanoparticles exhibited greater cytotoxicity on MCF-7 human breast cancer cells than free drug and non-targeted nanocarriers due to the enhanced cellular uptake of nanoparticles via CD44 receptors overexpressed. All these findings demonstrated that proposed nanocarriers might be promising as a smart drug delivery system to improve the antitumor efficacy of chemotherapeutic drugs.

Abstract:Acidic pH is a crucial intrinsic property of the microenvironment of most solid tumors. Hence, the use of pH sensitive tumor targeting nanoparticles is an attractive approach to enhance the therapeutic efficacy of anti-cancer agents in solid tumors. Chitosan nanoparticles (CHNPs) have been widely explored in the area of cancer drug delivery; nevertheless their true potential as a pH responsive targeted drug delivery vehicle in cancer therapy has not been deciphered yet as most of the research is limited to pH dependent stability and drug release. In the present study, we investigate the direct effect of pH in synergy with RGD peptide based targeting on the therapeutic efficacy of chitosan nanoparticles (RGD-CHNPs) in breast cancer. Furthermore, for the first time we performed a comprehensive study showing the anti-tumor, anti-migratory and anti-angiogenic effect of raloxifene (Rlx) loaded CHNPs in breast cancer. We prepared stable formulations of raloxifene encapsulated CHNPs and RGD-CHNPs by the nontoxic ionic gelation method. pH dependent studies revealed that NPs possess higher stability and zeta potential along with enhanced cellular uptake at acidic pH (as present in solid tumors) compared to physiological pH. Furthermore, RGD conjugation enhanced the in vitro cellular uptake of CHNPs in αvβ3 integrin expressing breast cancer cells and induced higher cellular apoptosis in breast cancer cells which was further augmented by lower pH. Moreover, Rlx-RGD-CHNPs significantly inhibited breast cancer cell migration and angiogenesis. In vivo studies showed that Cy5.5 conjugated RGD-CHNPs can distinctly visualize tumors and Rlx-RGD-CHNPs significantly inhibit breast tumor growth without causing any toxic effect to normal tissue as confirmed by hematology and blood biochemical studies. Therefore, RGD-CHNPs could potentially enhance the therapeutic efficacy of chemotherapeutic drugs due to the synergistic effect of pH responsiveness and tumor specific targeting in breast cancer.

Abstract:In recent decades, bio-polymeric nanogels have become a forefront in medical research as innovative in-vivo drug carriers. This study introduces a pH-sensitive chitosan nanoparticles/P(N-Isopropylacrylamide-co-Acrylic acid) nanogel (CSNPs/P(NIPAm-co-AAc)), making significant advancements. The nanogel effectively encapsulated doxorubicin hydrochloride (Dx. HCl), a model drug, within its compartments through electrostatic binding. Comparing nano chitosan (CSNPs) before and after integrating copolymerized P(NIPAm-co-AAc), highlighting an improved and adaptable nanogel structure with responsive behaviors. The intraperitoneal delivery of Dx-loaded nanogel () to Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (Eh)-bearing mice at doses equivalent to 1.5 and 3 mg/kg of Dx per day for 14 days exhibited superiority over the administration of free Dx. demonstrated heightened anticancer activity, significantly improving mean survival rates in Eh mice. The nanogel's multifaceted defense mechanism mitigated oxidative stress, inhibited lipid peroxidation, and curbed nitric oxide formation induced by free Dx. It effectively countered hepatic DNA deterioration, normalized elevated liver and cardiac enzyme levels, and ameliorated renal complications. This pH-responsive CSNPs/P(NIPAm-co-AAc) nanogel loaded with Dx represents a paradigm shift in antitumor drug delivery. Its efficacy and ability to minimize side effects, contrasting sharply with those of free Dx, offer a promising future where potent cancer therapies seamlessly align with patient well-being.

Abstract:A dual pH/temperature sensitive core-shell nanoformulation has been developed based on ZIF-8 coated with chitosan-poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (CS-PNIPAAm) for co-delivery of doxorubicin (DOX) and carboplatin (CBP) in breast cancer cells. The resulting nanoparticles (NPs) had particle sizes around 200 nm and a zeta potential of about +30 mV. The CBP and DOX loading contents in the final NPs were 11.6 % and 55.54 %, respectively. NPs showed a pH and thermoresponsive drug release profile with a sustained prolonged release under physiological conditions. The in vitro cytotoxicity experiments showed a significant synergism of CBP and DOX to induce the IC50 of 1.96 μg/mL in MCF-7 cells and 4.54 μg/mL in MDA-MB-231 cells. Also, the final NPs were safer than free DOX and CBP on normal cells. The in vitro study confirmed the higher potency of the designed NPs in combination therapy against breast cancer cells with lower side effects than free drugs.

Abstract:Despite its widespread usage as a chemotherapy drug in cancer treatment, doxorubicin (DOX) has limitations such as short in vivo circulation time, low solubility, and poor permeability. In this regard, a pH‐responsive chitosan (CS)‐ montmorillonite (MMT)‐ nitrogen‐doped carbon quantum dots (NCQDs) nanocomposite was first developed, loaded with DOX, and then incorporated into a double emulsion to further develop the sustained release. The incorporated NCQDs into the CS‐MMT hydrogel exhibited enhanced loading and entrapment efficiencies. The presence of NCQDs nanoparticles in the CS‐MMT hydrogel also resulted in an extended pH‐responsive release of DOX over a period of 96 h compared to that of CS‐MMT‐DOX nanocarriers at pH 5.4. Based on the Korsmeyer‐Peppas model, there was a controlled DOX release at pH 5.4, while no diffusion was observed at pH 7.4, indicating fewer side effects. Abstract:Promising drug nanocarriers consisting of mono-dispersed and pH sensitive chitosan–silica hollow nanospheres (CS–SiO2 HNPs) suitable for breast cancer therapy are produced and investigated. The SiO2 HNPs are fabricated using a one-step, one-medium process which obviates the need for post-treatment to remove the templates, additional dissolution, or calcination. Taking advantage of the cross-linking reaction with (3-Glycidyloxypropyl) trimethoxysilane (GTPMS), cationic polysaccharide-chitosan decorates the surface and produces pH sensitive CS–SiO2 HNPs. The materials enable controlled release of loaded drugs in pericellular and interstitial environments. In particular, the antibody molecule (to ErbB 2) can be conjugated onto the surface of the CS–SiO2 HNPs thereby allowing the hollow nanospheres to serve as a targeted delivery agent to breast cancer cells. TNF-α are delivered to MCF-7 breast cancer cells under both in vitro and in vivo conditions to suppress the growth of cancerous cells and even kill them with high therapeutic efficacy. Owing to their hollow inner cavity and porous structures, the CS–SiO2 HNPs are excellent pH-responsive targeted nanocarriers.

Abstract:The majority of current nanocarriers in cancer treatment fail to deliver encapsulated cargos to their final targets at therapeutic levels, which decreases the ultimate efficacy. In this work, a novel core–shell nanocarrier with a biodegradable property was synthesized for efficient drug release and subcellular organelle delivery. Initially, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were grafted with terminal double bonds originating from N, N′-bisacrylamide cystamine (BAC). Then, the outer coatings consisting of chitosan (CTS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were deposited on the surface of modified AgNPs using an emulsion method. To improve the stability, disulfide-containing BAC was simultaneously reintroduced to cross-link CTS. The as-prepared nanoparticles (CAB) possessed the desired colloidal stability and exhibited a high drug loading efficiency of cationic anticancer agent doxorubicin (DOX). Furthermore, CAB was tailored to transform their size into ultrasmall nanovehicles responding to weak acidity, high glutathione (GSH) levels, and overexpressed enzymes. The process of transformation was accompanied by sufficient DOX release from CAB. Due to the triple sensitivity, CAB enabled DOX to accumulate in the nucleus, leading to a great effect against malignant cells. In vivo assays demonstrated CAB loading DOX held excellent biosafety and superior antitumor capacity. Incorporating all the benefits, this proposed nanoplatform may provide valuable strategies for efficient drug delivery.

Abstract:In the present study, a dual pH-responsive multifunctional nanoparticle system was designed for combining immunotherapy and chemotherapy to treat breast cancer through targeting immune cells and cancer cells. A proven anti-tumor immune regulator, R848, was encapsulated with poly(L-histidine) (PHIS) to form PHIS/R848 nanocores. Doxorubicin (DOX) was conjugated to hyaluronic acid (HA) through an acid-cleavable hydrazone bond linkage to synthesize polymeric prodrug HA-DOX, which was subsequently coated outside PHIS/R848 nanocores to form HA-DOX/PHIS/R848 nanoparticles. Ionization of PHIS around pH 6.5 (a pH value close to that of tumor microenvironment) switched the nature of this material from hydrophobic to hydrophilic, and thus triggered the release of R848 to exert immunoregulatory action. The rupture of hydrazone bond in HA-DOX at about pH 5.5 (pH of endo/lysosomes) accelerated the release of DOX to exert cytotoxic effects. In immune cells, PHIS/R848 nanocores exhibited strong immunoregulatory activities similar to those induced by free R848. In breast cancer cells overexpressing CD44, HA-DOX was specially internalized by CD44-mediated endocytosis and significantly inhibited the cell growth. In 4T1 tumor-bearing mice, HA-DOX/PHIS/R848 nanoparticles showed excellent tumor-targeting ability and remarkably inhibited the tumor growth by regulating tumor immunity and killing tumor cells. In summary, this multifunctional nanoparticle system could deliver R848 and DOX respectively to tumor microenvironment and breast cancer cells to achieve synergistic effects of immunotherapy and chemotherapy against breast cancer. Statement of Significance Combination of immunotherapy and chemotherapy is becoming a promising new treatment for cancer. The major challenge is to target cancer and immune cells simultaneously and specifically. In this study, a dual pH-responsive multifunctional nanoparticle system based on poly(L-histidine) and hyaluronic acid was designed for co-loading R848 (immune-regulator) and doxorubicin (chemotherapeutic drug) through different encapsulation modes. By responding to the acidic pHs of tumor microenvironment and intracellular organelles, this multifunctional nanoparticle system could release R848 extracellularly and deliver DOX targetedly to breast cancer cells, thus achieving synergistic effects of immunotherapy and chemotherapy against breast cancer. Targeted codelivery of doxorubicin and oleanolic acid by reduction responsive hyaluronic acid-based prodrug nano-micelles for enhanced antitumor activity and reduced toxicity

Abstract:Chemotherapy remains one of the most commonly used strategies in cancer treatment but suffers from damages to healthy tissues and organs. How to precisely co-deliver two or more drugs with different mechanisms of action to the tumors for synergistic function is a challenge for chemotherapy. Herein, Oleanolic acid (OA)-conjugated Hyaluronic acid self-assembled nano-micelles loaded with Doxorubicin (DOX) (HSO NPs/DOX) were constructed for CD44 positive cancer targeted codelivery of DOX and OA. HSO NPs/DOX exhibited reduction triggered drug release under high concentration of glutathione, more efficient uptake by 4T1 breast cancer cells than free DOX leading to higher cytotoxicity, pro-apoptotic, and migration inhibitory activities against 4T1 cells. The ex vivo biodistribution experiment demonstrated more HSO NPs/DOX were accumulated in the tumor tissues than free DOX and less in the non-tumor tissues after injections in 4T1 tumor bearing mice. More importantly, synergistic anti-tumor effects of DOX and OA were obtained using HSO NPs/DOX in 4T1 breast tumor-bearing mice and toxicity of DOX to liver and heart were circumvented through regulating the Nuclear Factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) and Silent Information Regulator 1 (Sirt1) expressions. Taken together, HSO NPs/DOX may become a promising codelivery system for chemotherapeutics in cancer therapy.
