Abstract:A set of chitosan/ε-polylysine (ε-PL) bionanocomposite films were prepared by a simple in situ self-assembly technique using sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP) as cross-linking agent. The physical, mechanical, structural, and antimicrobial properties of these films were investigated. Fourier infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction showed that the introduction of TPP promoted the formation of hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions among functional groups of chitosan or ε-PL, which improved the tensile strength and decreased the water solubility, water vapor permeability and surface wettability of films. On the other hand, the incorporation of ε-PL weakened the bionanocomposite film' structure and integrity, resulting in a decrease trend of films' mechanical and barrier properties. More importantly, the bionanocomposite films exhibited excellent antimicrobial efficacy against E. coli and S. aureus by the increasing ratio of ε-PL. And ε-PL presented a sustained release from the films, which was closely related to TPP concentration. Results of this study suggested that chitosan/ε-PL films could be used as antimicrobial bio-material and have great potential in food industry.

Abstract:The function of chitosan film was reinforced by ZnO nanoparticles and antioxidant of bamboo leaves (AOB) for food packaging application. The results of structural characterization indicated the good compatibility among chitosan, ZnO nanoparticles and AOB. The chitosan film had the best mechanical strength and the highest light transmittance. The addition of AOB remarkably reduced the UV light transmittance and significantly enhanced the antioxidant activity of the films. Meanwhile, AOB and ZnO nanoparticles synergistically enhanced the antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus. Our results suggested that the chitosan/ZnO/AOB films could be applied as potential active packaging materials in food industry to extend the shelf-life of packaged food.

Abstract:To address the environmental and food contamination issues caused by plastics and microorganisms, antimicrobial films using natural polymers has attracted enormous attention. In this work, we proposed a green, convenient and fast approach to prepare antimicrobial films from chitosan (CS), bacterial cellulose (BC) and ε-polylysine (ε-PL). The effects of different concentrations of ε-PL (0 %, 0.25 %, 0.5 %, 0.75 %, 1 %, w / v ) on the physicochemical properties and antibacterial activity of composite films (CS-DABC-x%PL) were systematically investigated. Furthermore, a comprehensive comparison with purely physically mixed CS-BC-x%PL films provides a deeper understanding of the subject matter. Characterization tests of the films were conducted using scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results suggested that the incorporation of 0.5 % ε-PL reduced the water solubility of the composite film by 19.82 %, along with improved the tensile strength and thermal stability by 37.31 % and 28.54 %. As ε-PL concentration increased to 1 %, the antibacterial performance of the films gradually enhanced. Additionally, the CS-DABC-0.5%PL film demonstrated effectiveness in delaying the deterioration of tilapia. These findings imply that this novel green packaging material holds significant potential in food preservation due to its promising antibacterial properties.

Abstract:This study aimed to develop a bilayer film prepared by layer-by-layer solution casting method from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and shellac (sh). And the degradable antibacterial films (PVA@CMCS-CuO/Sh) were prepared with carboxymethyl chitosan-copper oxide nanoparticles (CMCS-CuO NPs) as the antibacterial agent in the PVA matrix. The chemical composition, morphological structure, mechanical properties, water resistance, antimicrobial property, and biodegradability of the composite films were also investigated. With the addition of CMCS-CuO NPs at 1, 2.5, and 5%, the water resistance of the films increased significantly, and the elongation at break (EAB) and tensile strength (TS) increased first and then decreased, and at 2.5% of CMCS-CuO NPs, the films had better mechanical properties and UV-blocking properties, and the inhibition rate of E. coli and S. aureus reached over 90%. Freshness tests on cherry tomatoes showed that PVA/Sh and PVA@CMCS-CuO/Sh films had a certain freshness retention effect, maintaining higher hardness and lower weight loss rate within two weeks. Degradation experiments showed a higher soil biodegradation rate of the bilayer films within 30 days. Compared with PVA films, PVA/Sh and PVA@CMCS-CuO/Sh films have superior antimicrobial activity and freshness preservation performance and have higher potential for food preservation applications.

Abstract:Chitosan (CS) films have demonstrated strong antibacterial properties, excellent biocompatibility and biode-gradability, but poor UV blocking, oxygen and water barrier and mechanical properties limit their application in antimicrobial food packaging. In this study, CS films were incorporated with nanofillers, including lignin nanoparticles (LNP, 1-5 wt %) and acylated soy protein isolate nanogel (ASPNG, 3-7 wt %) to improve their tensile strength, oxygen and water barrier, UV blocking and antibacterial properties. SEM images illustrated that the addition of LNP and ASPNG significantly affected the surface morphology of the CS film. Meanwhile, LNP incorporation improved UV blocking property of composite film, while an improved sustained antibacterial property was achieved with ASPNG incorporation. Interestingly, CS composite film incorporated with 3% LNP and 5% ASPNG showed a remarkable increase in tensile strength (37.29-54.29 MPa) and decreased oxygen barrier property (5.73-2.83 cm3/m2.24 h MPa) relative to pure CS film. It is worth mentioning that the bacterial counts in samples treated by 3% LNP/5% ASPNG-CS composite film decreased approximately 2.37 log CFU/mL, which exhibited higher antibacterial activity than other composite films. However, this study also demonstrated that incorporation of LNP and ASPNG slightly decreased the light transmission and increased surface roughness of CS film. All in all, the CS composite film with enhanced mechanical, barriers, antibacterial properties were obtained by incorporating an appropriate proportion of LNP and ASPNG and could further be utilized as a promising antibacterial food packaging material.

Abstract:The use of nanotechnology has contributed to conquer the disadvantages of oil-loaded food packaging by altering their properties. In this study, chitosan (CS) composite films were fabricated using a novel nano-encapsulation system: ethanol extract of propolis (EEP)-phosphatidylcholine (PC)-tea seed oil (TSO) nano-microcapsules. X-ray diffraction results indicated that the nano-microcapsules were biocompatible with CS. Uniformly dispersed EEP-PC-TSO nano-microcapsules in CS improved the UV-blocking ability, thermal stability, structural densification, yellowing, and water vapor permeability of the composite films, the release of TSO occurs gradually and under controlled conditions. Compared with a simple mixture film of CS/PC/TSO/EEP, the CS film based on nano-microcapsules containing EEP-PC-TSO was more effective at reducing total bacterial count, thiobarbituric acid reactants (TBARS), and total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) values, extending the shelf life of pork tenderloin. In summary, this CS composite film based on EEP-PC-TSO nano-microcapsules could be applied as a potential preservative film for food packaging.

Abstract:Polylactic acid (PLA)/starch acetate (SA) base film was prepared by scraping film method with PLA as the base film material, modified SA as the filling phase and polyethylene glycol (PEG) as plasticizer. Chitosan (CS)/tea polyphenol (TP) antibacterial agent was coated on the surface of PLA/SA base film by coating method. The morphology and structure of the composite film were characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM and thermogravimetric analysis, and the mechanical, optical and antibacterial properties were tested and analyzed. The results showed that CS/TP compound antibacterial agent was well combined with PLA/SA base film. Compared with the PLA/SA base film, when the content of TP (based on the mass of PLA/SA base film, the same below) was 0.4%, the tensile strength of the composite film increased by 29.33%, had good mechanical strength (24.96 ± 0.65 MPa), and the elongation at break increased by 29.34%; There was no obvious change in transparency, the light transmittance decreased by 0.86%; At the same time, the antibacterial composite film had good antibacterial effect on Escherichia coli , Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis . PLA/SA/CS/TP antibacterial composite film could be used in food packaging, especially those designed to protect food from light and microbial decay.

Abstract:Due to the increasing environmental pollution caused by plastic materials, the chitosan (CS)-based biodegradable films is gradually popular. However, poor water solubility of CS, poor mechanical and water barrier properties of CS film limit its application in food packaging. In this study, new bio-based films containing catechol-modified chitosan (CSCT), catechol-modified chitosan-silver nanoparticles (CSCT-Ag NPs) and gelatin (G) were prepared to overcome the drawbacks of pure CS films. Chitosan was modified by catechol to improve the water solubility. Ag NPs were prepared by in-situ reduction using modified chitosan, which yielded particles with an average size of approximately 8 nm. An antibacterial film composed of the modified chitosan as a matrix incorporated with Ag NPs and G was prepared by the solution casting method. The addition of Ag NPs and G improved the tensile strength and water vapor resistance. The prepared membrane exhibited unique antibacterial activities against S. aureus and E. coli. In conclusion, the fabricated bio-nanocomposite indicated considerable potential for food packaging.

Abstract:The utilization of biopolymers incorporated with antimicrobial agents is extremely interesting in the development of environmentally friendly functional materials for food packaging and other applications. In this study, the effect of calcium oxide (CaO) on the morphological, mechanical, thermal, and hydrophilic properties as well as the antimicrobial activity of carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCH) bio-composite films was investigated. The CMCH was synthesized from shrimp chitosan through carboxymethylation, whereas the CaO was synthesized via a co-precipitation method with polyethylene glycol as a stabilizer. The CMCH-CaO bio-composite films were prepared by the addition of synthesized CaO into the synthesized CMCH using a facile solution casting method. As confirmed by XRD and SEM, the synthesized CaO has a cubic shape, with an average crystalline size of 25.84 nm. The synthesized CaO exhibited excellent antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) (>99.9% R). The addition of CaO into CMCH improved the mechanical and hydrophobic properties of the CMCH-CaO films. However, it resulted in a slight decrease in thermal stability. Notably, the CMCH-CaO10% films exhibited exceptional antimicrobial activity against E. coli (98.8% R) and S. aureus (91.8% R). As a result, such bio-composite films can be applied as an active packaging material for fruit, vegetable, or meat products.

Abstract:Photodynamic inactivation (PDI) is a novel sterilization technology that has proven effective in medicine. This study focused on applying PDI to food packaging, where chitosan (CS) films containing photosensitizing riboflavin (RB) were prepared via solution casting. The CS-RB composite films exhibited good ultraviolet (UV)-barrier properties, and had a visually appealing highly transparent yellow appearance. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed even dispersion of RB throughout the CS film. The addition of RB led to improved film characteristics, including the thickness, mechanical properties, solubility, and water barrier properties. The CS-RB 5% composite films produced sufficient singlet oxygen under blue LED irradiation for 2 h to inactivate two food-borne pathogens (Listeria monocytogenes and Vibrio parahaemolyticus) and one spoilage bacteria (Shewanella baltica). The CS-RB composite films were assessed as a salmon packaging material, where inhibition of bacterial growth was observed. The film is biodegradable, and has the potential to alleviate the issues associated with the excessive use of petrochemical materials, such as environmental pollution and limited resources. The CS-RB composite films showed potential as a novel environmentally friendly packaging material for shelf-life extension of refrigerated food products.

Abstract:One of Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films' well-recognized weaknesses is moisture sensitivity, which limits their applications. Various techniques have been employed to improve their hydrophobicity, such as blending and hydrophobic coating, but they have shown issues with compatibility and stability. In this study, a new method was proposed to modify PVA by grafting N-isopropyl acrylamide (NIPA) and blending it with chitosan (CS) to enhance its hydrophobic and antibacterial properties. The chemical structure of PVA-NIPA was characterized by FT-IR, 1 H NMR, and XRD. By forming chemical bonds between PVA and NIPA through Michael's addition reaction, the moisture sensitivity of the film was significantly reduced. Additionally, the contact angle (CA) increased to 107.85° and the water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) decreased from 17.69 g / (m 2 h) to 6.53 g / (m 2 h). The PVA-NIPA/CS film also exhibited excellent mechanical properties, with Young's modulus of 303.67 MPa, tensile strength of 28.86 MPa, and elongation at break of 330.25%. Moreover, it showed better compatibility, high transparency, good UV-blocking properties, and strong antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ), reducing the total colony counts by 2.53 and 3.44 logs, respectively. Thus, this work has generated new insights for expanding the application range of PVA films in packaging materials.

Abstract:To deal with serious environmental damage resulting from plastic packaging materials, biodegradable films using natural products have gained considerable attention. Here, we provide a simple, fast, and environmentally-friendly route to construct a biodegradable film using chitosan (CS), bacterial cellulose (BC), and curcumin (Cur). Composite films (CSn-BC-Cur) using CS with different molecular weights were investigated, and their water moisture content (MC), water solubility (WS), contact angle (CA), mechanical properties, barrier properties, and antioxidant properties were compared. The obtained films were characterized by SEM, XRD, and TGA. The results showed that chitosan with a higher molecular weight presented higher contact angles and mechanical properties, along with a lower moisture content, water vapor transmission rate, and oxygen transmission rate. Furthermore, when the composite film was placed in 95% ethanol, it released active substances. The results suggest that these composite films can be used as promising materials for food packaging.

Abstract:Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and chitosan (CH)-based blend films were prepared via a simple mixing and casting method. The films were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–vis). Mechanical properties, thermogravimetric (TG), derivative thermogravimetric (DTG), and the inhibition of biofilm formation against Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 (P. aeruginosa PAO1) of CH/PVA films were investigated. The results indicated that CH and PVA in the blend films interacted by physical crosslinks consisting of intermolecular hydrogen bonds and intermolecular hydrogen bonds with compatibility, and were more thermally-stable than that of PVA. CH addition decreased the tensile strength and the light transmittance. CH60:PVA40 film showed notable activity against adhesion and inhibited biofilm formation of P. aeruginosa PAO1, indicating that CH60:PVA40 film could be applied as an antimicrobial and biofilm inhibiting food packaging material.

Abstract:A recent focus on the development of biobased polymer packaging films has come about in response to the environmental hazards caused by petroleum-based, nonbiodegradable packaging materials. Among biopolymers, chitosan is one of the most popular due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, antibacterial properties, and ease of use. Due to its ability to inhibit gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, yeast, and foodborne filamentous fungi, chitosan is a suitable biopolymer for developing food packaging. However, more than the chitosan is required for active packaging. In this review, we summarize chitosan composites which show active packaging and improves food storage condition and extends its shelf life. Active compounds such as essential oils and phenolic compounds with chitosan are reviewed. Moreover, composites with polysaccharides and various nanoparticles are also summarized. This review provides valuable information for selecting a composite that enhances shelf life and other functional qualities when embedding chitosan. Furthermore, this report will provide directions for the development of novel biodegradable food packaging materials.

Posttraumatic stress disorder after a school shooting: effects of symptom threshold selection and diagnosis by DSM-III, DSM-III-R, or proposed DSM-IV.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of symptom threshold and criteria set selections on the diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in adults and children exposed to a man-made disaster and determine how well DSM-III and its successors agree. METHOD Data gathered in the course of a voluntary clinical screening for PTSD in 66 adults and 64 children 6 to 14 months after exposure to a school shooting were analyzed according to DSM-III, DSM-III-R, and proposed DSM-IV criteria for PTSD diagnosis and cluster endorsement using liberal (occurring at least a little of the time), moderate (occurring at least some of the time), and conservative (occurring at least much or most of the time) symptom thresholds. RESULTS Within DSM-III, DSM-III-R, and proposed DSM-IV, selection of liberal, moderate, and conservative symptom thresholds had robust effects on rates of diagnoses; liberal thresholds allowed the greatest frequencies of diagnosis. Compared with DSM-III and proposed DSM-IV, DSM-III-R generally diagnosed the fewest cases. Agreements between DSM-III-R and proposed DSM-IV were good, while agreements between DSM-III and its successors varied for children and adults. CONCLUSIONS Diagnostic rates and agreements were complexly influenced by interactions among threshold and revisions in symptom clusters. The present study suggests that attempts to refine PTSD classification consider specification of symptom threshold intensity and supports the view that modification of criteria sets be undertaken with caution.
Sustainable chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol composite film integrated with sulfur-modified montmorillonite for active food packaging applications

Abstract:Sulfur-functionalized montmorillonite (S-MMT), which has strong antioxidant and antibacterial activities, was prepared by forming a sulfur-amine complex using ethylenediamine (EDA). S-MMT was added to the chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol (Chi/PVA) blend polymer to develop an active food packaging film. The composite film, especially 4 wt% S-MMT-added Chi/PVA film (Chi/PVA/S-MMT 4% ), showed significant increases in tensile strength (∼25.1 %), elongation at the break (∼94.1 %), and UV-blocking ability (98.2 % UV-A and 100 % UV-B) compared to the neat Chi/PVA film. The Chi/PVA/S-MMT 4% film also exhibited remarkable antioxidant properties (100 % ABTS and 65.4 % DPPH scavenging activity) and potent antibacterial activity (stopped the growth of L. monocytogenes and E. coli ). Chicken packaged in the composite film showed a significant reduction in quality changes, including appearance, pH, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and total viable colonies (TVC) over 20 days of storage. Multifunctional Chi/PVA/S-MMT films have high potential in active food packaging applications.

Fast and long-acting antibacterial properties of chitosan-Ag/polyvinylpyrrolidone nanocomposite films.

Abstract:Infection associated with medical devices is one of the most frequent complications of modern medical biomaterials. Preparation of antibacterial films on the medical devices is a great challenge owing to bactericidal efficiency, long acting and biocompatibility. In this study, silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) doped chitosan/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) films were successfully prepared by dip coating method. The nanocomposite films with spherical Ag NPs (diameters in 10-50 nm) were stable after being immersed in PBS for 35 days. Through regulating the concentration of AgNO3, the nanocomposite films showed good cell compatibility. The nanocomposite films could eliminate 100% Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538) and Escherichia coli (ATCC 8739) in 5 min and had favorable long-acting antibacterial property. The increase of PVP amount obviously enhanced anti-adhesion activity of the nanocomposite film. Such nanocomposite films can be expected to have good potential in biomaterials applications.
Development of multilayer films based on PLA/PBAT and sodium alginate for active packaging

Abstract:Using polymer blends of polylactide (PLA) and polyadipic acid/butylene terephthalate (PBAT) as matrix, and chitosan (CS), zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) or Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) loaded sodium alginate (SA) as coatings, a series of multilayer films were prepared via a starch‐based adhesive. In this study, polylactic acid (PLA) and polyadipic acid/butylene terephthalate (PBAT) blend polymer were used as matrix to prepare PLA/PBAT substrate film by twin‐screw extruder. A series of multilayer films were prepared by starch‐based adhesive by loading 1% chitosan (CS), 1% zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) or 1% silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with sodium alginate (SA) as three different coatings. Compared with PLA/PBAT, the combination of adhesive and SA‐based antibacterial coating significantly improved the water vapor barrier, oxygen barrier and mechanical properties of the film, regardless of the type of antibacterial agent. The water vapor transmission of SA‐based AgNPs coating film decreased from the original 5.77 × 10−14 to 3.41 × 10−14 g·cm·cm−2·Pa−1·s−1. The oxygen permeability of SA‐based chitosan coating decreased from the original 74.35 × 10−14 to 6.40 × 10−14 cm3·cm·cm−2·Pa−1·s−1. The tensile strength of the SA‐based AgNPs coating film increased from the original 264.79 to 286.22 MPa. The film is yellow and has good ultraviolet absorption capacity. Membranes doped with CS, ZnONPs or AgNPs inhibited the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Among them, chitosan doped membrane has weak antibacterial activity, AgNPs doped membrane has the best antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus, and has potential application prospects in active packaging.

Abstract:The packaging of fresh foods is increasingly focusing on biodegradable composites made from natural resources. Environmental worries about traditional plastics can be reduced by developing robust, eco-friendly biocomposites. Here, carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) was co-solubilized with cellulose to successfully fabricate highly transparent, sturdy composite films (CSCs). All composite films exhibited better thermal stability, high transparency, and robust mechanical strength due to physical cross-linking and hydrogen bonds between homogeneously dispersed CMCS and cellulose molecules. Particularly, compared to CSC-0, the tensile strength and elongation at break of CSC-3 were increased by 68.8 and 23.2%, respectively. Additionally, CSCs showed excellent barrier capacity and good antibacterial ability for suitable food packaging materials. These CSCs with excellent properties can be used to package fruit to reduce water loss from the fruit and increase its shelf life.

[Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors in oral maxillofacial region: clinical analysis of 11 cases].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To investigate the clinicopathologic features, treatment and prognosis of the malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST) in oral and maxillofacial region. METHODS From 1987 to 2008, 11 patients underwent surgical treatment. We retrospectively reviewed clinical character, treatment and follow-up data and performed a literature review. RESULTS The most common symptom of the patients was an enlarging mass. Five patients felt numb and/or pain. The immunohistochemical staining showed positive for SMA (5/11), S-100 (7/11), p53 (5/11), Ki-67 (11/11) and vimentin (11/11). The 2-year and 5-year survival rates of the patients were 30% and 9.5% respectively, and the average survival time was 33.9 months. CONCLUSION MPNST is one of the most aggressive tumors with high risk of local recurrence and distant metastasis. Mulitimodal therapy including surgical resection and adjuvant radiotherapy is needed. Complete removal of the tumor is the main modality of treatment and a most important prognostic factor of MPNST.
