Abstract:Na 2 FeP 2 O 7 cathode material exhibits great promise in sodium ion batteries (SIBs), due to its low cost and high structural durability. Nevertheless, the intrinsically poor electronic conductivity and sluggish Na + diffusion kinetics of Na 2 FeP 2 O 7 hinder its practical application. Herein, a synergistic cooperation of continuous amorphous carbon layer and optimized Co doping strategy is proposed to design high -performance SIB cathode (Co-doped Na 2 FeP 2 O 7 /C) via in -situ sol-gel method, where Co integration significantly enhances both the electronic conductivity and the Na + diffusion kinetics, as confirmed by the combination of ex/in-situ characterizations and density functional theory calculations. Valuably, the synergy of amorphous carbon layer and appropriate Co doping restrains the structure stress to "zero-strain", Which remains beneficial for 0.10Co-NFO@C to display high capacity of 96.12 mAh g -1 at 0.05C and a high -rate capacity of 61.75 mAh g -1 at 60C with the capacity retention of 79.9% after 5000 cycles. Moreover, optimized Co-doped Na 2 FeP 2 O 7 /C also shows outstanding cycling performance and rate capability when assembled into full batteries (hard carbon as the anode), demonstrating a reversible capacity of -110.9 mAh g -1 at 50 mA g -1 , and a respectable capacity retention 78.0% at 500 mA g -1 for 500 cycles. The strategy inspires new advances towards zero-strained cathode materials for high performance SIBs.

Abstract:As the most promising anodes for Na+/K+ batteries (SIBs/PIBs), transitional metal sulfides present the advantages of high capacity, straightforwardly-controlled morphology and abundant redox reaction sites. However, maintaining the structural integrity of the electrode materials during cycling and improving the cycle life still face great challenges. Herein, CoS2@NPSC@MoS2 nano-spindle heterostructure with multiple heteroatoms co-doped carbon layers coupled with Janus metal sulfides (CoS2 and MoS2) were successfully fabricated via the successive organic coating, gas-phase phosphorization and the final hydrothermal reaction processes. Benefiting from the uniformly dispersed CoS2 nanocrystals in the interior of carbon layer and the MoS2 nanosheets arrays in the exterior, Na+/K+ diffusion distances are remarkedly shortened and the reaction kinetics are greatly improved, which also provide more active sites on the surface for exposure to the electrolyte. The presence of heterogeneous atomic N/P/S co-doped carbon layer greatly improves the electrochemical conductivity of the heterostructure and provide additional buffer space for volume changes, which is conducive to retaining the integrity of the electrode structure during the cycling processes. When used as the anode material for SIBs/PIBs, it reached the reversible specific capacity of 340.44 mAh g-1 at 5.0 A g-1 after 1000 cycles for SIBs and 37.53 mAh g-1 at 5.0 A g-1 after 800 cycles for PIBs. This work demonstrates a reliable and simple strategy for the rational design of Janus metal sulfides heterostructures for high performance Na+/K+ storage application.
Fabrication of S,N-Doped Carbon-Coated SnS2/SnS Heterostructures Supported by Hollow Carbon Microspheres for Sodium-Ion Storage

Abstract:Developing novel anode materials containing electroactive heterostructures which boost ion and charge transfer kinetics in a carbon matrix is still a great challenge. Here we report on a new smartly designed material: SnS2/SnS p-n heterostructures embedded in S,N-doped carbon layer supported by hollow carbon spheres (C@SnSx@C) by a facile method and applied as negative electrode material in sodium ion batteries. The C@SnSx@C2 (at optimized carbon ratio) negative electrode can deliver an initial reversible capacity of 636.5 mAh·g−1 at 0.1 A·g−1, superior rate capability (265.1 mAh·g−1 at rate of 10.0 A·g−1) and long cycle life (capacity retention of 96.3 % at 1.0 A·g−1 after 150 cycles). The SnS2/SnS p-n heterojunctions provide a lower sodium ion diffusion energy barrier (0.38 eV), higher Na+ adsorption energy (−4.66 eV) and higher electronic conductivity due to an internal electric field according to density functional theory calculations compared to plain SnS. Moreover, S,N-doped carbon facilitates electronic conductivity and buffers the volume changes during the conversion reaction-based SnSx upon sodium insertion and extraction process. Porous hollow carbon spheres contribute to prevent the agglomeration of SnS2/SnS nanosheets and keep the structural integrity. Our findings on this unique material might be extended to other ion battery technologies.

Abstract:Development of multitudinous heteroatoms co-doped carbon nanomaterials with pleasurable electrochemical behavior for sodium ion batteries is still an enormous challenge. Herein, high dispersion cobalt nanodots encapsulating into N, P, S tri-doped hexapod carbon () have been victoriously synthesized via template strategy with using poly (hexachlorocyclophos-phazene and 4,4′-sulfonyldiphenol) as both carbon source and N, P, S multiple heteroatom doping sources. The uniform distribution of cobalt nanodots and the Co-N bonds are conducive to form a high conductive network, which synergistically increase a lot adsorption sites and lessens the diffusion energy barrier, thereby improving the fast Na + ions diffusion kinetics. Consequently, delivers the reversible capacity of 311.1 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 after 450 cycles with 70% capacity storage rate, while obtains the capacity of 237.1 mAh g - 1 after 200 cycles at the elevated current densities of 5 A g −1 as an excellent anode material for SIBs. These interesting results pave a generous avenue for the exploitation of promising carbon anode materials for Na + storage.

Abstract:Transition metal phosphides are emerging as promising anode materials of sodium ion batteries (SIBs) due to their high performance in terms of capacity and operational stability. Highly isolated CoP nanoparticles encapsulated in 3D hollow nitrogen-doped carbon networks (CoP/HNC composite) are designed via polymerization of poly-dopamine (PDA) on ZIF-67 and the subsequent in-situ phosphorization. Ultrafine CoP nanoparticles (10 ± 2 nm) are decorated in nitrogen-doped carbon polyhedral shells in a porous 3D hollow architecture. Benefiting from the unique construction, the CoP/HNC electrode delivers a high reversible long cycle-life capacity of 223 mA h g−1 for sodium storage at 500 mA g−1 after 700 cycles. DFT simulations indicate that Na atoms strongly bound to CoP surfaces, and significantly concentrate near CoP surfaces, beneficial for the Na ions storage in this composite material. These results suggest the CoP/HNC composite can be a promising anode material for SIBs. Besides, the designed strategy of CoP/HNC composite could be applied to fabricate other metal phosphides for electrochemical storage devices.

Abstract:Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) are considered satisfactory anode candidates for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their high energy density and modest plateau. However, the TMPs anode suffers from poor cycling and rate properties owing to the negative effects of severe volumetric expansion and sluggish reaction kinetics. Herein, a novel structure of porous core/shell CoP@N-C nano polyhedral embedding on 2D MXene nanosheets (CoP@N-C/MXene) was synthesized by self-assembly and in-situ phosphorization methods. The porous CoP@N-C with the unique core/shell structure benefits the infiltration of electrolytes and alleviates the volumetric change. Besides, high-conductive 2D MXene nanosheets could enhance electrical conductivity and charge transfer kinetics, and effectively inhibit CoP@N-C pulverization and agglomeration. Based on the above advantages, the as-prepared CoP@N-C/MXene anode delivers an excellent cycling capacity, outstanding rate capability and low-temperature high-rate capability. This synthetic strategy of CoP@N-C/MXene architecture can be extended to other materials which are promising for SIBs electrodes.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries became recently one of the candidates for the next generation of energy storage devices. However, the rapid capacity decay caused by the “shuttle effect” of polysulfides hinders its large-scale applications. In this study, we synthesized CoO/Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles embedded in N-doped carbon (CoO/Co 3 O 4 /NC) via two-step heat treatments of cobalt-based organic framework (ZIF-67 cube). The CoO/Co 3 O 4 /NC were prepared by tuning the surface components of pristine MOF-derived carbon skeletons with a controllable temperature and atmosphere. Tested in the Li-S batteries, S/CoO/Co 3 O 4 /NC electrode delivered a high discharge capacity of 1211.6 mAh g -1 at 0.2 C, and low capacity attenuation of 0.04% per cycle over 1000 cycles at 1 C. The good electrochemical performance can be attributed to the CoO/Co 3 O 4 /NC hosts that are featured with strong polar chemisorption of polysulfides by CoO/Co 3 O 4 , high electronic conductivity of ZIF-67 cube derived carbon, the stable structure of hollow carbon. This work shows that S/CoO/Co 3 O 4 /NC can be a potential candidate for cathode material applied in Li-S batteries.

Abstract:Considering the finite resources of nonrenewable fossil fuels and urgent demands of modern society, sodium ion batteries (SIBs) featuring low cost, considerable natural supply and environmental friendless, show huge prospects in energy storage field, especially in constructing massive energy storage networks. Here, we propose a facile organic frameworks composite-derived sulfuration method, for acquiring heteroatoms doped CoS2 nanoparticles (2) as SIBs anode. This electrode shows long and steady cycling process at 1 A g-1. After running 2095 cycles, it maintains a capacity of 546.3 mA h g−1. An exceedingly low capacity fading ratio of 0.013% per cycle can be acquired. Also, it gives high discharge capacities of 540.7 and 493.6 mA h g−1, even at 4 and 8 A g-1, separately. In addition, 2 possesses a comparative or even better rate capability than other CoS2 based materials and other types of metal sulfides. Overall, this electrode exhibits superior cycling and rate performances. Additionally, its Na+ reaction kinetics and storage mechanism are deeply investigated.

Abstract:Engineering ideal anode materials with low cost, considerable reaction kinetics and good structural stability are urgently needed for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) toward large-scale applications. Here, a hierarchical peapod-like nanorod consisting of CoSe2/N-doped carbon (NC) core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) embedded into one-dimensional (1D) N-doped carbon nanotubes (CoSe2/) with inner void space is developed and fabricated by a self-template, dopamine-coating, and succeeding selenization strategy. In the cleverly designed CoSe2/ composite, the 1D peapod-like structure provides high mechanical strength and allows for fast mass transport/electron transfer. The external NCNTs and inner void space can effectively accommodate volumetric undulation and restrain the aggregation of CoSe2 NPs. Based on these advantages, the CoSe2/ electrode exhibits excellent comprehensive sodium storage performance, e.g., good rate capability (386.3 mAh g−1 at 10.0 A g−1) and high cycling stability (394.2 mAh g−1 up to 4500 loops at 5.0 A g−1). Moreover, the SIB full cells (Na3V2(PO4)3@C cathodes vs CoSe2/ anodes) can achieve a reversible capacity of 75.6 mAh g−1total after 200 cycles at 0.5 A g−1. This work provides a feasible avenue to construct stable energy-storage materials.

Abstract:As a promising anode material for sodium-ion batteries, SnS 2 has attracted increasing attention owing to its high theoretical capacity and abundant reserves. Unfortunately, the poor electrical conductivity and drastic volume changes lead to unsatisfactory cycling and rate performance, largely limiting its practical application. Herein, we report a pomegranate-like composite of heterostructured SnS 2 /CoS 2 spheres encapsulated in S, N dual-doped carbon framework (SnS 2 /CoS 2 @SNC) obtained by a simple ion adsorption, in situ polymerization coating of polydopamine and subsequent calcination strategy. The integration of CoS 2 with SnS 2 particles with abundant interfaces can provide rich redox chemistry and accelerated ion diffusion kinetics, while the coated S, N dual-doped carbon shell enables good electrical conductivity and reinforced structural integrity as well by accommodating the volume changes and inhibiting the collapse/pulverization of active materials during the cycling process. As a consequence, the pomegranate-like heterostructured SnS 2 /CoS 2 @SNC anode exhibited a higher capacity (743 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 ), excellent rate capability (213 mAh g −1 at 50 A g −1 ) and outstanding cycling stability (560 mAh g −1 at 5 A g −1 after 1000 cycles), showing the application feasibility of this anode material for developing high-rate and durable SIBs.

Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF) derivatives with controllable morphology, porosity, and high specific area are considered as potential anodes for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, the poor conductivity and sluggish diffusion kinetics of Na+ of MOF-derived materials result in rapid capacity decline and inferior rate capability. Herein, a hierarchical hollow superstructure composed of CoP nanoparticles anchored on the N-doped carbon polyhedral frameworks with the epitaxial growth of carbon nanotubes (CoP@N-HP/CT), is prepared by MOF coating, and subsequent carbonization − oxidation − phosphorization strategy. Owing to the elaborate hierarchical hollow superstructure, the CoP@N-HP/CT composites achieve long cycling stability (over 2500 cycles), and good rate capability as SIBs anodes. The remarkable electrochemical performance of the CoP@N-HP/CT hybrids is attributed to their high capacitive contribution and fast sodium ion diffusion rate. Furthermore, the sodium storage behaviors of the CoP@N-HP/CT are revealed by ex-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscope techniques. Thus, the well-designed hierarchical hollow CoP@N-HP/CT superstructure gives an insight into the superior anodes for sodium storage.

Abstract:In this work, we propose the fabrication of N, S co-doped carbon framework with confined CoS2 nanoparticles and rooted carbon nanotubes (NSPCF@CoS2). As LIBs anode, the NSPCF@CoS2 electrode gives an inceptive discharge capacity of 921.5 mA h g(-1), with Coulombic efficiency of above 97% during the 200 cycles (except for the previous 5 cycles). As SIBs anode (the applied voltage range is 0.4-3 V), the NSPCF@CoS2 electrode performs a steady and relatively high capacity (over 448.0 mA h g(-1)) during the 1650 cycles, and an extremely low capacity decay rate of 0.018% per cycle is obtained. Also, the NSPCF@CoS2 electrode shows a high capacity of 545.3 mA h g(-1) even at 8 A g(-1) (the applied voltage range is 0.1-3 V). This NSPCF@CoS2 electrode shows a comparable or even higher rate performance than many reported transition metal chalcogenides materials, confirming its promising usage. The presence of pseudocapacitive contribution is verified, after the deep investigation on Li+/Na+ storage behavior and reaction kinetics. In addition, this rationally designed structure gives potential application in supercapacitor.

Abstract:Transition metal sulfides (TMSs) as anode materials deliver promising potential in achieving high-capacity sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). But the undesirable volume change for structure upon redox process always hinder the realization of satisfactory cycling stability and rate capability. Herein, a novel Co9S8/carbon composite (Co9S8 @NPC) with Co9S8 nanoparticles (NPs) immobilized into nitrogen-doped porous carbon networks was synthesized via the successive procedures of sol-gel, pyrolysis carbonization and in situ sulfidation and employed as anode material for SIBs. By virtue of the yielded porous feature, nitrogen-doping and space confinement of Co9S8 NPs in conductive carbon sheet networks, the Co9S8 @NPC is able to offer integrated merits of sufficient active sites, improved reaction dynamics and rigid structural stability for high-performance Na-storage. As a result, the assembled Co9S8 @NPC electrode possesses large initial discharge/charge capacities (752.5/325.3 mAh g−1 at 50 mA g−1), considerable rate capability (138.5 mAh g−1 at 3000 mA g−1) and high cycling stability (275.3 mAh g−1 at 50 mA g−1 after 100 cycles; 120.4 mAh g−1 at 500 mA g−1 after 3000 cycles). In order to uncover the diffusion and storage mechanism of Na+ ions in the electrode material, pseudocapacitive behavior, reaction dynamics and related theoretical simulation based on first-principles calculations are initially conducted. The facile synthesis strategy and desirable Na-storage performance might enable the Co9S8 @NPC composite great potential in advanced SIBs.

Abstract:Utilized Zn/Co-based metal-organic framework, we successfully fabricate 1D N-doped porous carbon nanofibers anchoring amorphous and graphite carbon-encapsulated CoS2 nanoparticles, using a facile electrospinning strategy combined with annealing treatment. Remarkably, the composite as superior anode for sodium ion battery is rationally designed, and also exhibit enhanced Na-storage performance. The composite shows a large specific capacity of 876 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1 in the initial cycles and an outstanding long-term performance (148 mAh g−1 at a current density of 3.2 A g−1 over 1000 cycles). The improved electrochemical performance is ascribed to the 1D porous carbon nanofibers structure and the amorphous and graphite carbon coating, which can relatively inhibit agglomeration of CoS2 nanoparticles, mitigate the volume of the material changes in the process of circulation and provide stabilized electrical conductivity. This research paves the way for extending the 1D metal sulfides and metal-organic framework composites toward potential applications.

Abstract:Due to the obvious advantages of utilizing naturally abundant and low cost sodium resources, sodium ion batteries (SIBs) show great potential for large‐scale energy storage applications. And the high theoretical capacities of transition metal sulfides (TMSs) make them appealing anode materials for SIBs; however, structural collapse caused by the severe volume change during de/sodiation processes results in poor capacity retention and rate capabilities. Compared to the development of new materials and the improvement of their electrochemical performance, the studies on their reaction mechanisms are still rare, especially the operando characterizations. Herein, the synthesis, anode application, and the operando observation of the de/sodiation mechanism of a nitrogen‐doped porous carbon coated nickel cobalt bimetallic sulfide hollow nanocube ((Ni0.5Co0.5)9S8@NC) composite are reported. Such a material is synthesized via facile sulfidation of phenol formaldehyde coated Ni3[Co(CN)6]2 metal–organic framework precursors with Na2S followed by calcination. The nanocomposite displays a remarkable specific capacity of 752 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1 after 100 cycles and outstanding rate capability due to the synergistic effect of several appealing features. Particularly, the pseudocapacitive effect appears to substantially contribute to the sodium storage capability. Operando X‐ray diffraction reveals the conversion reaction mechanism of (Ni0.5Co0.5)9S8@NC, forming Ni, Co, Na2S, and Na2S5.

Abstract:Transition metal selenides attract significant attention as advanced anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) in recent years due to their appropriate working potential and high theoretic capacity. However, the poor structural stability and rate capability limit their further practical applications. Herein, zeolite imidazole framework-8/zeolite imidazole framework-67 is used as a template to prepare Co0.85Se and ZnSe nanoparticles embed in N-doped carbon matrix successfully, and then coated a carbon layer (@C) by in-situ polymerization. One side, the N-doped carbon matrix with rich pore structure not only shorten the diffusion path of Na+ and improve the conductivity of the electrode, but also prevent structural collapse and agglomeration of active particles during the sodium insertion/extraction process. On the other side, the carbon shell preparation by coating can form a protective layer to buffer the volumetric stress generated in the electrochemical process and further improve the electrical conductivity. As a result, the as-prepared @C anode material exhibits an excellent electrochemical performance for SIBs. This investigation provides a promising approach to optimize the electrochemical performance of SIBs by incorporating active metal compounds into conductive carbons to form multidimensional structure.

Abstract:Potassium ions batteries (PIBs) have been regarded as a promising choice for electrical energy storage technology due to the wide distribution of potassium resources. However, developing low-cost and robust earth-rich anode materials is still a major challenge for the practical and scalable usage of PlBs. Herein, for the first time, we developed nitrogen doped carbon coating CoS2/CuCo2S4 heterostructure (CoS2/CuCo2S4 @NCs) hollow spheres and evaluated as anode for PlBs. The CoS2 and CuCo2S4 heterostructure interface could generate a built-in electric field, which can fasten electrons transportation. The nanostructures could shorten the diffusion length of K+ and provide large surface area to contact with electrolytes. Furthermore, the inner hollow sphere morphology along with the carbon layer could accommodate the volume expansion during cycling. What's more, the N-doped carbon could increase the conductivity of the anodes. Benefitting from the above features, the CoS2/CuCo2S4@NCs displays an outstanding rate capability (309 mAh g at 500 mA g after 250 cycles) and a long-term cycling life (112 mAh g (1) at 1000 mA g (1) after 1000 cycles) in ether-based electrolyte. Conversion reaction mechanism in CoS2/CuCo2S4 @NCs anode is also revealed through ex situ XRD characterizations. Abstract:A novel and bottom-up approach has been applied to synthesize bi-metal Ni-Co coordination polymer@polydopamine (NiCoCP@PDA) core-shell nanocubes by polymerization of PDA layer on the surface of NiCoCP nanocubes. After thermally induced sulfurization processes, biactive NiS2@CoS2 hetero-nanocrystals encapsulated into N-doped carbon core-shell nanocubes has been successfully prepared. When used as anodes materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium ion batteries (SIBs), the novel bicontinuous carbon wrapped NiS2@CoS2 nanocrystals hierarchical structures show excellent lithium/sodium ion storage capacities with high specific capacities, good rate capabilities and stable cycling stability. The enhanced electrochemical performance is attributed to the interconnected porous structures and large amount of mesoporous structures, which effectively reduce the diffusion length for lithium ions and electrons, buffer volume expansion during the lithium/sodium ion insertion/extraction processes and retained structural integrity due to double carbon frameworks.

Abstract:Electrode materials with high conductivity, strong chemisorption, and catalysis toward polysulfides are recognized as key factors for metal-sulfur batteries. Nevertheless, the construction of such functional material is a challenge for room-temperature sodium-sulfur (RT-Na/S) batteries. Herein, a multiregion Janus-featured CoP-Co structure obtained via sequential carbonization–oxidation–phosphidation of heteroseed zeolitic imidazolate frameworks is introduced. The structural virtues include a heterostructure existing in a CoP-Co structure and a conductive network of N-doped porous carbon nanotube hollow cages (NCNHCs), endowing it with superior conductivity in both the short- and long-range and strong polarity toward polysulfides. Thus, the /NCNHC cathode exhibits superior electrochemical performance (448 mAh g–1 remained for 700 times cycling under 1 A g–1) and an optimized redox mechanism in polysulfides conversion. Abstract:Carbon-based material is one of the most promising candidates of anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, the poor rate performance and low capacity due to intrinsic nature greatly impact their practical application. Heteroatom-doped carbon material is an efficient method to optimize the electrochemical performance of anode electrodes for SIBs. Herein, we report a template-initiated strategy to fabricate nitrogen, phosphorus, fluorine co-doped hollow carbon nanocages (NPF–HCN) derived from a rationally designed zeolitic imidazolate framework-8@covalent triazine polymer core-shell structured nanocomposites (ZIF-8@CTP). High proportions of tailored multi-heteroatom species within the CTP network contribute to the in-situ generation of N, P, F-doping in the resultant hollow carbon nanocages. Additionally, the hierarchical porous and hollow nanostructures of the NPF-HCN can promote the penetration of electrolytes, thus reduce diffusion barrier of Na+. As anode materials of SIBs, the as-prepared NPF-HCN delivers a higher initial capacity of 569.6 mA h/g at 1 A/g and a superior cycling behavior with a high capacity of 220.3 mA h/g at 5 A/g after 5000 cycles.
