Abstract:Objective: To examine the time course of aqueous-deficient and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) in patients with primary Sjogren's Syndrome (pSS). Methods: This prospective study was conducted on pSS female patients in the Department of Rheumatism of the Second Affiliated Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University. The age-matched MGD female patients without pSS (non-SS-MGD) were recruited as MGD controls from the Eye Center of the Second Affiliated Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University. After providing written informed consent, the patients underwent an eye examination and completed an Ocular Surface Disease Index questionnaire that assessed the symptoms of dry eye disease. The subjects were evaluated using Schirmer I test (SIt), tear meniscus height (TMH), noninvasive keratographic break-up time (NIKBUT), corneal fluorescein staining (CFS), and meibomian gland evaluation (meibomian gland infrared, lid margin score, expressible meibomian glands number and the secretions quality). The patients were divided into two groups: early stage (≤3 years) and late stage (>3 years) according to their medical history of dry eye. The data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0. Results: There were 49 pSS and 52 non-SS-MGD female patients enrolled in this study from 1 January 2018 to 30 December 2018. There were no differences in age (49.38 ± 10.32 and 48.69 ± 13.57 years) and dry eye medical history (48.44 ± 40.16 and 47.79 ± 37.85 months) between the two groups. When the medical history was ≤3 years, the average SIt and TMH of the pSS patients were significantly smaller than those of the patients with MGD. However, the signs related to the MGD did not show a significant difference between the two groups. When the medical history was >3 years, both the SIt and TMH and the signs related to MGD in pSS group were significantly more severe than the MGD group. Conclusions: Our results demonstrated that 3 years may be an important time node for the dry eye development in pSS patients, before this, the lacrimal glands received a greater influence, and then the meibomian glands began to be greatly affected.
Analysis Of Th17-Associated Cytokines And Clinical Correlations In Patients With Dry Eye Disease

Abstract:We aimed to investigate the expressions of three Th17-associated cytokines, interleukin (IL)-17A, IL-6 and IL-23, in protein and mRNA levels and their correlations with ocular surface parameters in patients with dry eye disease (DED) through a small sample size case control study. A total of 45 female subjects were divided into Sjogren's syndrome (SS) DED group, non-Sjogren's syndrome (non-SS) DED group and control group. Ocular surface disease index (OSDI) was self-answered and clinical tests including tear-film breakup time (BUT), Schirmer I test, cornea fluorescein staining (CFS) were performed. The conjunctival mRNA expressions of these cytokines were investigated by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and the levels of protein in tears were measured by mutiplex bead analysis. The correlations between cytokines and ocular surface parameters were analyzed. Results show that the expressions of IL-17A and IL-6 in protein and mRNA levels were both significantly increased in the DED group (P<0.05), and also higher in SS group comparing to the non-SS group (P<0.05). Moreover, IL-17A and IL-6 correlated well with ocular surface parameters (all P<0.05, R values range from 0.5-0.8). Despite the expression of IL-23 was significantly increased in the DED group (P<0.05), there was no significant difference found between the expressions of IL-23 in SS group and non-SS group (P>0.05) and no correlation found between the IL-23 and any ocular surface parameter (P>0.05). These findings indicates that the three Th17-associated cytokines, IL-17A, IL-6 and IL-23, play roles in the pathogenesis of DED and the expressions of IL-17A and IL-6 in tears have potential to be diagnostic biomarkers for DED.

Abstract:C34 is a 34‐mer peptide derived from the C‐terminal ectodomain of HIV‐1 envelope glycoprotein, gp41. The C34 region in native gp41 carries a conserved N‐glycan at Asn637 and the sequence is directly involved in the virus–host membrane fusion, an essential step for HIV‐1 infection. This paper describes the synthesis of glycoforms of C34 which carry a monosaccharide, a disaccharide, and a native oligosaccharide moiety. The synthesis of the glycopeptide which carries a native high‐mannose type N‐glycan was achieved by a chemoenzymatic approach by using an endoglycosidase‐catalyzed oligosaccharide transfer as the key step. The effects of glycosylation on the inhibitory activity and the helix‐bundle forming ability of C34 were investigated. It was found that glycosylation moderately decreases the anti‐HIV activity of C34 and, in comparison with C34, glyco‐C34 forms less compact six‐helix bundles with the corresponding N‐terminal peptide, N36. This study suggests that conserved glycosylation modulates the anti‐HIV activity and conformations of the gp41 C‐peptide, C34.

Abstract:Purpose: Certain systemic conditions are reported to be risk factors for dry eye disease (DED), but their associations with DED severity are not well studied. We evaluated whether systemic conditions reported to be DED risk factors are associated with severity of DED signs and symptoms. Design: Secondary analysis of data from the Dry Eye Assessment and Management Study, a large-scale multicenter randomized clinical trial of patients with moderate to severe DED. Participants: Five hundred thirty-five adult patients with moderate to severe DED from 27 United States centers. Methods: Patients reported their medical history at baseline. They underwent ocular surface examinations and symptom evaluation using standardized protocols at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months. We analyzed the associations of systemic conditions (a systemic disease or smoking history) reported as potential DED risk factors with the severity of DED signs and symptoms using generalized linear regression models adjusted by age, gender, race, and visit. Main outcome measures: Dry eye disease symptoms assessed using the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), 6 DED signs (tear film break-up time, anesthetized Schirmer testing, corneal fluorescein staining, conjunctival lissamine green staining, tear osmolarity, and meibomian gland dysfunction), and a composite signs severity score from 0 to 1 (1 = most severe). Results: The mean age was 58 years; 81% were women. More severe DED signs were associated significantly with Sjögren syndrome (mean composite signs severity score 0.52 with disease vs. 0.43 without disease; P < 0.001), facial rosacea (0.47 vs. 0.43; P = 0.002), rheumatoid arthritis (0.47 vs. 0.42; P = 0.002), peripheral artery disease (0.50 vs. 0.43; P < 0.001), and daily smoking history (0.45 vs. 0.43; P = 0.047). Thyroid dysfunction, osteoarthritis, diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome, hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, and hypertriglyceridemia were not associated significantly with DED signs. No conditions were associated significantly with OSDI. Conclusions: In this large, well-characterized cohort of patients with DED assessed under standardized procedures, patients with certain systemic diseases and smoking history showed more severe DED signs compared with patients without the conditions. The profile of significant DED signs varied by systemic condition, reflecting different DED causes. Understanding the systemic conditions and underlying causes that predispose some patients to severe DED can improve management.

Abstract:AIM: To explore ocular surface manifestations of dry eye disease (DED) and its influencing factors in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. METHODS: Ophthalmological examinations were conducted in SLE patients (n=43) and controls (n=41), including Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), objective scatter index (OSI), tear meniscus height (TMH), lipid layer thickness (LLT), non-invasive Keratograph tear breakup time (NIKBUT), corneal fluorescein score (CFS), Schirmer I test. DED was diagnosed according to the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society Dry Eye Workshop II Criteria. SLE patients were further divided into DED group and non-DED group, the disease activity, clinical manifestations and laboratory investigations were compared between the two groups. The disease activity was evaluated by Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index 2000 (SLEDAI-2K). Receiver operative characteristic (ROC) curve and multiple-factor binary logistic regression were performed. RESULTS: SLE patients showed higher OSDI [9.1 (2.8-15.9) vs 6.3 (2.2-7.5), P=0.035], higher OSI [1.67 (1.09-2.60) vs 0.96 (0.87-1.60), P=0.001], higher CFS [1 (0-2) vs 0 (0-1), P=0.001], lower LLT [65 (42-100) vs 100 (79.5-100), P=0.010], and lower NIKBUT [8.03 (4.02-9.73) vs 9.67 (5.26-12.71), P=0.030] than controls. The 32.6% of SLE patients had DED, which was higher than 12.2% of healthy controls. DED group showed higher SLEDAI-2K score [9.7±6.1 vs 5.4±3.4, P=0.025], higher anti-cardiolipin antibody (ACL) [8.7 (3.5-13.2) vs 3.6 (2.0-6.9), P=0.035], and higher proportion of patients with cutaneous eruption [42.9% vs 6.9%, P=0.015] than non-DED group. According to multiple-factor binary logistic regression analysis, the SLEDAI-2K score (OR=1.194, P=0.041) and cutaneous eruption (OR=7.094, P=0.045) could be consider as risk factors for DED in SLE patients. The ROC curve of the combined factors including age, disease duration, SLEDAI-2K score, ACL, and cutaneous eruption was analyzed, with a sensitivity of 0.786, a specificity of 0.793, and an area under curve of 0.820. CONCLUSION: Ocular surface affection is frequent in SLE patients, and patients with high disease activity and cutaneous eruption show increased risk of DED.

Evaluations of Tear Protein Markers in Dry Eye Disease: Repeatability of Measurement and Correlation with Disease

Abstract:PURPOSE. We characterized tear protein markers in dry eye disease (DED).METHODS. In this prospective study, based on the ocular surface disease index (OSDI) and corneal staining (CS), 95 DED patients (OSDI 13) with increasing CS were enrolled into 3 severity groups: DE1 (CS < 4), DE2 (CS 4-7), and DE3 (CS > 7), while 25 asymptomatic subjects with no CS were enrolled into the control group (OSDI < 13 and CS 0). Tear fluid was collected at day 0 and day 7 visits, and concentrations of 43 protein markers were measured by multiplexed immunoassay.RESULTS. We analyzed 22 control and 80 DED subjects. Among 33 markers detectable, good inter-visit repeatability was observed with 25 markers, with intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) ranging from 0.85-0.60; ICCs were < 0.60 in the other 8. Correlation with clinical measures was found with two markers, with absolute partial correlation coefficients >0.40: Interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra) and IL-8. IL-1Ra and IL-8 correlated with conjunctival staining (0.43, P < 0.001 and 0.35, P < 0.01, respectively), and with Schirmer test (-0.58 and -0.42, P < 0.001). IL-1Ra and IL-8 in DE3 were 4.4- and 2.1-fold higher than in DE1 (P = 0.0001 and 0.0007), and 1.9- and 1.6-fold higher than in DE2 (P = 0.022 and 0.017). IL-1Ra in DE2 was 2.3-fold higher than in DE1 (P = 0.038).CONCLUSIONS. Tear levels of many immune mediators were highly repeatable between visits in DED. Abstract:This study is to identify subgroups of DED patients with different tear cytokine profiles and compare their DED symptoms and signs among subgroups. Baseline tear cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-17A, IFN-γ and TNF-α) were measured using a magnetic bead assay. DED symptoms were assessed by Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) and signs were assessed by corneal and conjunctival staining, tear break-up time (TBUT), Schirmer's test, tear osmolarity and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Latent profile analysis was performed to identify subgroups, and their scores of DED symptoms and signs were compared using generalized linear regression. Among 131 patients with total tear volume > 4 μl from both eyes, subgroup 1 (n = 23) significantly higher in IL-6 and IL-8 (all p < 0.001) and subgroup 2 (n = 108) significantly higher in IL-10 (p = 0.03), IL-17A (p < 0.001), and IFN-γ (p < 0.001). Both subgroups were similar in demographics and DED symptoms, but subgroup 1 had significantly more severe DED signs: higher conjunctival staining (3.38 vs. 2.69, p = 0.04), corneal staining (4.26 vs. 3.03, p = 0.03), lower Schirmer's test score (8.20 vs. 13.72, p < 0.001), and higher composite severity score of DED sign (0.62 vs. 0.45, p = 0.002). We identified two DED subgroups with different profiles of tear cytokines. Patients in these subgroups differed significantly in DED signs, supporting the inflammation's role in DED development and progression.

Abstract:The goal of the study was to examine whether a genetic polymorphism in tumor necrosis factor receptor 1 (TNFR1) gene impacted the dry eye disease (DED) phenotype and response to anti-inflammatory therapy. The prospective study included 328 individuals with various dry eye (DE) symptoms and signs recruited from the Miami Veterans Hospital eye clinic between October 2013 and October 2017. The population underwent genetic profiling for a polymorphism within the TNFR1 gene (rs1800693 [TT, TC, CC]). The study examined the genotype distribution and relationships between the genotype, phenotype, and response to anti-inflammatory therapy. The mean age of the population was 61.7 ± 9.8 years. Here, 92% self-identified as male, 44% as White, and 21% as Hispanic; 13% (n = 42) of individuals had a CC genotype. DED symptoms and signs were similar across the three genotype groups. Thirty individuals (four with CC) were subsequently treated with an anti-inflammatory agent. There was a non-significant trend for individuals with CC genotype to have a partial or complete symptomatic response to treatment compared with the other two groups (100% for CC vs. 40% for TT and 36.4% for TC, p = 0.22). In conclusion, the presence of homozygosity of minor allele C (CC genotype) in a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) within TNFR1 was noted in a minority of individuals with various aspects of DED, but did not impact the DED phenotype. Our findings suggest that the current phenotyping strategies for DED are insufficient to identify underlying disease contributors, including potential genetic contributors.

Abstract:The acid-base status of the fetal lamb was studied in near-term pregnant ewes subjected to spinal anesthesia. The status of the fetus was compared to its mother and the changes which occur after the fetal lungs were ventilated with oxygen or nitrogen were investigated. Factors associated with severe dry eye in primary Sjögren's syndrome diagnosed patients

Abstract:Introduction: Primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) is an autoimmune disease, characterized by lymphocytic infiltration of exocrine glands and other organs, resulting in dry eye, dry mouth and extraglandular systemic findings. Objective: To explore the association of severe or very severe dry eye with extraocular involvement in patients diagnosed with primary Sjögren's syndrome. Methods: SJOGRENSER registry is a multicenter cross-sectional study of pSS patients. For the construction of our main variable, severe/very severe dry eye, we used those variables that represented a degree 3-4 of severity according to the 2007 Dry Eye Workshop classification. First, bivariate logistic regression models were used to identify the effect of each independent variable on severe/very severe dry eye. Secondly, multivariate analysis using regression model was used to establish the independent effect of patient characteristics. Results: Four hundred and thirty-seven patients were included in SJOGRENSER registry; 94% of the patients complained of dry eye and 16% developed corneal ulcer. Schirmer's test was pathological in 92% of the patients; 378 patients presented severe/very severe dry eye. Inflammatory articular involvement was significantly more frequent in patients with severe/very severe dry eye than in those without severe/very severe dry eye (82.5 vs 69.5%, p = 0,028). Inflammatory joint involvement was associated with severe/very severe dry eye in the multivariate analysis, OR 2.079 (95% CI 1.096-3.941). Conclusion: Severe or very severe dry eye is associated with the presence of inflammatory joint involvement in patients with pSS. These results suggest that a directed anamnesis including systemic comorbidities, such as the presence of inflammatory joint involvement or dry mouth in patients with dry eye, would be useful to suspect a pSS.
Correlation Between Tear Film Osmolarity, Dry Eye Disease, and Rheumatoid Arthritis

Abstract:PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability of tear film osmolarity as a diagnostic tool for detecting dry eye disease (DED) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The second aim was to determine whether there is a relationship between tear film osmolarity, a commonly used RA score, and diagnostic blood tests for RA.METHODS: A group of 74 patients with RA but without any previously established diagnosis of DED at University Hospital Wurzburg was examined. A Modified Dry Eye Severity Score was calculated based on tear film osmolarity, Schirmer test, tear film break-up time, ocular surface disease index questionnaire, corneal fluorescein staining, conjunctival lissamine green staining, and meibomian gland grading score. RA assessment included disease activity score (DAS) 28-erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) scoring and serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and rheumatoid factor (RF).RESULTS: Tear film osmolarity showed a high coefficient of determination and correlation when regressed to Modified Dry Eye Severity Score (R = 0.727, P < 0.001). Using a cutoff point of 316 mOsmol/L, there was significant correlation between DAS28-ESR values and tear film osmolarity (P = 0.016). Spearman correlation coefficients between osmolarity and CRP or RF were not significant (CRP: r = -0.104, P = 0.353; RF: r = 0.138, P = 0.226).CONCLUSIONS: Tear film osmolarity highly correlates with a modified dry eye severity scale in patients with RA with previously unknown DED. Tear film hyperosmolarity >316 mOsmol/L is correlated significantly with a commonly used DAS of RA (DAS28-ESR) but not with serum markers such as CRP and RF. Patients with RA with a high DAS28-ESR score show higher prevalence of tear film hyperosmolarity.

Abstract:Purpose . The present study investigated the relationship between dry eye and the disease activity in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Methods . Patients with RA were divided by the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) into the symptomatic group (score ≥ 12) and the asymptomatic group (score 2.6) and the stable group (score ≤ 2.6). In the control group, 20 healthy adults with matched sex and age were selected. RA patients and healthy adults were inspected for the tear film break time (TBUT), tear meniscus height (TMH), corneal fluorescein staining (CFS), meibomian scan (MS), meibomian gland secretion score (MSS), and eyelid margin assessment (EMS). Results . The TBUT of the RA group was significantly less than that of the control group, while the CFS, MS, EMS, and MSS were higher. The TBUT of the symptomatic RA group was significantly less than that of the asymptomatic group, and the CFS was higher. In the active RA group, only the CFS was higher than that of the stable group, and there was no significant difference between the two groups for other parameters. Furthermore, there was no significant correlation between the course of RA and the dry eye ( P > 0.05 ). Conclusion . The rheumatoid activity does not necessarily lead to an aggravation of dry eye. Regardless of the duration, RA was not found to exhibit relation with the severity of dry eye. Translational Relevance . RA patients with disease active period cannot be ignored for the existence of dry eye, since patients with dry eye often lack the signs and symptoms.

Abstract:Background: Dry eye disease (DED) is characterized by the loss of ocular surface homeostasis with specific signs and symptoms. Studying the progression of a multifactorial disease is exceedingly challenging for researchers because several factors can influence it. The present study aims to study changes in tear meniscus height (TMH), lipid layer pattern (LLP), and bulbar hyperemia over time in untreated DED participants. Methods: This retrospective longitudinal study included 73 participants (146 eyes) diagnosed with DED since at least 2013. Participants underwent new examinations between 2021 and 2023, grouped by 8-, 6-, or 4-year follow-up periods. TMH, LLP, and bulbar hyperemia were assessed in both examinations. No participant received pharmacological treatment for DED. Results: Differences in TMH, bulbar hyperemia, and LLP between sessions were obtained in the 8-year group (p ≤ 0.027). Differences in bulbar hyperemia and LLP between sessions were obtained in the 6-year group (p ≤ 0.022). The only differences in LLP between sessions were obtained in the 4-year group (p < 0.005). Conclusion: Changes in TMH were obtained after periods of eight years from the first eye examination. Also, changes in bulbar hyperemia were obtained at periods of 8 and 6 years; however, changes in LLP could be found from 4-year follow-ups.

Abstract:Background—It is recognized that inflammation is an underlying cause of dry eye disease (DED), with cytokine release involved. We systematically reviewed literature with meta-analyses to quantitatively summarize the levels of tear cytokines in DED. Methods—The PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Ovid, Cochrane, and Scopus databases were reviewed until September 2019, and original articles investigating tear cytokines in DED patients were included. Differences of cytokines levels of DED patients and controls were summarized by standardized mean differences (SMD) using a random effects model. Study quality was assessed by applying Newcastle-Ottawa-Scale and the GRADE quality score. Methods of analytical procedures were included as covariate. Results—Thirteen articles investigating 342 DED patients and 205 healthy controls were included in the meta-analysis. The overall methodological quality of these studies was moderate. Systematic review of the selected articles revealed that DED patients had higher tear levels of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, chemokine IL-8, IL-10, interferon-γ, IFN-γ, and tumor necrosis factor-α, TNF-α as compared to controls. Evidence was less strong for IL-2 and IL-17A. Conclusions—Data show that levels of tear cytokines in DED and control display a great variability, and further studies of higher quality enrolling a higher number of subjects are needed, to define a cut-off value.

Abstract:Objective: Aim: to determine the state of local immunity in DED on the background of hormonal dysfunction. Patients and methods: Materials and Methods: Of 32 women, 17 patients with diagnosed SM and 15 women of the control group were examined. The Ocular Surface Disease Index and the state of local immunity were defined by determining Ig As in lacrimal fluid (LF) by radial immunodiffusion in Mancini agar. Results: Results: During the OSDI questionnaire, a mild degree of DED was detected in 21 (65.6%) women, and an average degree was observed in 11 (34.4%) patients with SM. On average, OSDI was 34.54 ±2.01. As a result of studies of the state of local immunity in patients with SM, a tendency to increase Ig As was noted, compared with the control group. An increase in Ig As in the lacrimal fluid in patients with SM to 0.34 ±0.09 g/l was found, compared with the control group (0.24 ±0.03 g/l). Conclusion: Conclusions: Using the OSDI questionnaire, the presence of DED was detected in women with SM, mainly mild and moderate degree. The obtained results of the state of local immunity indicate in favor of a nonspecific inflammatory process, accompanied by a decrease in local immune protection and leading to further changes in the ocular surface.
Development of a dry eye index as a new biomarker of dry eye disease

Abstract:Purpose: To evaluate signs and symptoms in patients diagnosed with dry eye disease (DED), divided into dry eye (DE) groups, in order to find a new biomarker that allows an accurate diagnosis, management and classification of DED. Methods: This cross-sectional, observational study included 71 DED subjects. Subjective symptoms, visual quality and DE signs were assessed using the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), the Quality of Vision (QoV) questionnaire, best corrected distance visual acuity (VA), functional visual acuity (FVA), contrast sensitivity (CS), high- and low-order corneal aberrations (HOA and LOA, respectively), tear break-up time (TBUT), Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), Schirmer test, corneal staining, lid wiper epitheliopathy (LWE) and meibography. Participants were classified into three groups based on dryness severity using a cluster analysis, i.e., mild (N = 17, 55.8 ± 15.4 years), moderate (N = 41, 63.5 ± 10.6 years) and severe (N = 13, 65.0 ± 12.0). A new Dry Eye Severity Index (DESI) based on ocular surface signs has been developed and its association with symptoms, visual quality and signs was assessed. Comparisons between groups were made using Kruskal-Wallis and Chi-squared tests. Spearman correlation analysis was also performed. Results: The DESI was based on three tests for DE signs: TBUT, Schirmer test and MGD. The DESI showed significant differences between different pairs of groups: Mild Dryness versus Moderate Dryness (p < 0.001), Mild Dryness versus Severe Dryness (p < 0.001) and Moderate Dryness versus Severe Dryness (p < 0.001). The DESI was significantly correlated with age (rho = -0.30; p = 0.01), OSDI score (rho = -0.32; p = 0.007), QoV score (rho = -0.35; p = 0.003), VA (rho = -0.34; p = 0.003), FVA (rho = -0.38; p = 0.001) and CS (rho = 0.42; p < 0.001) Also, significant differences between the severity groups were found for OSDI and QoV scores, VA, FVA, CS and MGD (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The DESI has good performance as a biomarker for the diagnosis, classification and management of DED.
Analysis of Clinical Characteristics of Immune-Related Dry Eye

Abstract:Aim: To discuss the clinical characteristics of immune-related dry eye. Methods: Simple dry eye (SDE) group: we selected 224 patients of simple dry eye with no systemic lesions. Immune-related dry eye (IRDE) group: we selected 207 patients of dry eye complicated with immune system diseases, including 70 cases of Sjögren's syndrome (SS), 72 cases of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and 65 cases of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The classification of all patients was performed. The difference between the two groups was compared, including age, gender, ocular surface fluorescein staining and inflammatory reaction, tear breakup time (TBUT), Shirmer I test, confocal microscopy scan, and dry eye grading. Results: Compared with the SDE group, the patients of IRDE group were younger (P < 0.05). The female patients were significantly more than the male ones (P < 0.05). Corneal staining counts and ocular surface inflammation were significantly increased (P < 0.05). TBUT and Shirmer I test shortened significantly (P < 0.05). Corneal nerve fibers were less, and the number of local lymphocyte was significant increased. The number of dry eye patients in the moderate or above IRDE group was significantly increased (P < 0.05). Conclusions: The dry eye symptom and sign and ocular surface inflammation of IRDE were significantly more severe than those of the SDE.
