Abstract:A ventilated incubation experiment was conducted to investigate the dynamic trends of the soil NH+4-N,NO-3-N and soluble organic nitrogen(SON)contents under different water conditions and nitrogen levels in two paddy soils,Alluvial soil and Purplish clayey soil.During incubating period,the content of NH+4-N in the Purplish clayey soil is significantly higher under the water-logged incubation than that under the water-controlled incubation,whether nitrogen fertilizer is added or not.However,the content of NH+4-N in the Alluvial soil is not obviously enhanced under the water-logged incubation or nitrogen fertilization,except for being distinctly elevated at the 7th day of the water-logged incubation with nitrogen fertilizer addition.The NO-3-N contents of the two soils are significantly increased under the water-controlled incubation with or without nitrogen fertilization.Whereas,aforesaid phenomena exhibits during whole incubation period in the alluvial soil but starts from the 21st day of incubation in the Purplish clayey soil.The NO-3-N content is significantly increased in the Alluvial soil with nitrogen fertilization under both the water-controlled condition and water-logged condition.While,the NO-3-N content of the Purplish clayey soil with nitrogen addition is not noticeably increased under the water-logged condition.The contents of SON in the two soils are gradually increased and reach the highest level during the period of 21th day to 35th day of incubation,and then are rapidly declined to their original levels.On the peak period,the ratio of SON to TSN can reach to 80% in the Alluvial soil and 60% in the Purplish clayey soil,respectively.These results indicate that the nitrification activity in the Alluvial soil is very strong not only under the water-controlled condition but also under the water-logged condition.It is,therefore,important to pay much more attention to the NO-3-N leaching loss in the Alluvial soil,and the risk of soluble organic nitrogen losses in the two paddy soils during its peak period could not be neglected either.
Nitrogen leaching and nitrous oxide emission from three soils in China

Abstract:Through rye grass (Lolium multiflorum) covered soil column experiment was conducted to study nitrogen leaching and nitrous oxide emission from three Chinese soils with different physical and chemical properties. Red, yellow and blue soils with two replications of each soil samples were considered throughout the experiment and soils were collected to the plough layer depth (0 - 30cm) from three different sites in China. Nitrate concentrations and nitrous oxide emission from soil column surfaces were monitored for 60 days. During sampling period, soil column were placed in a green house to ensure standard temperature and germination of rye grass. Maximum temperature of the green house was 29.5 degrees C and minimum temperature was 16 degrees C that affected leaching and emission by nitrification and denitrification. But relative humidity had no remarkable effect on leaching and emission. Nitrogen leaching and N(2)O emissions were influenced by soil properties before and after nitrogen and phosphorous fertilizer application and different stages of rye grass from soil column. Nitrogen leaching was calculated by measuring the nitrate concentration in soil solution relating with the amount of percolation based on the changes in the soil water content within the sampling periods. The value of NO(3)-N concentration in the collected soils were higher in blue and red than in yellow soil. Due to temperature, growing and maturity stage of rye grass and plant N up taking behavior from soil, NO(3)-N concentrations were fluctuates in all kinds of soil during sampling period. Nitrous oxide gas samples were collected with close chamber technique and analyzed in the laboratory by gas chromatography. Among three soils nitrous oxide emission was higher in blue soil than in yellow and red soils. From this study, it was observed that nitrous oxide emission was higher during the first two weeks of sampling period and becomes constant rest of the sampling period.
Seasonal dynamics of soil pH and N transformation as affected by N fertilization in subtropical China: An in situ 15N labeling study

Abstract:Nitrogen (N)-induced soil acidification has received much attention worldwide. Nitrification and soil N mineralization are two key N cycle processes that affect soil acidification. However, the seasonal dynamics of soil pH under their combined influence is unclear. We studied the effect of N fertilization on soil pH and N transformations using 15N tracing in field lysimeters with soils developed from different parent materials (Quaternary red clay, sandstone, and basalt). Maize was planted with 200 kg N ha-1 yr-115N-labeled urea addition. During 7-45 days after fertilization, proton (H+) production due to nitrification of fertilizer N, nitrate (NO3-) leaching, and plant uptake exceeded H+ consumption by base cations mobilization and leaching, resulting in a significant soil pH decline. When nitrification activity decreased (after 45 days), due to exhausted ammonium (NH4+) availability, soil pH rose again. During the fallow period, acid neutralization due to base cation mobilization, and ammonification of soil organic N (SON) offset H+ production caused by nitrification of mineralized SON, leading to a sustained rise in soil pH. After the one-year experiment, no significant soil pH decrease was observed in any of the soils. Parent material had little effect on the seasonal dynamics of soil acidification, which appeared to be controlled by fertilization, environmental factors (temperature and moisture), and plant uptake. In subtropical regions, monitoring of soil pH on an annual basis may mask the effect of N fertilization on soil acidification.

Abstract:Soil nitrogen (N) leaching varies substantially in amounts and rates depending on soil type and N form, but the underlying mechanisms for this variation are largely unknown. We used six soils collected from the south, east, central, and west regions of China to examine the leaching of nitrate and ammonium in these soils through a soil column experiment during eight days. Large amounts of nitrate were leached in the starting three days, but only small amounts of ammonium were leached during the eight days. After eight-day leaching, most of applied ammonium was retained in soils, but nitrate residue in soils was very low. The cumulative nitrate leaching amounts were ordered as follows: the two acid soils from South China > the two neutral soils from South and East China > the two alkaline soils from Central and West China. The neutral and alkaline soils had fewer clay, more sand and organic matter, and higher denitrification potential compared with the acid soils. Nitrate leaching amount was negatively correlated with denitrification potential in different soils, suggesting that fewer nitrate leaching and residual in the neutral and alkaline soils may be attributed to their stronger denitrification relative to the acid soils. Nitrate is rapidly lost through leaching in the present acid soils and through denitrification in the neutral and alkaline soils, whereas ammonium is mostly remained in all soils with little leaching. Soil denitrification potential may be responsible for the difference in nitrate leaching among the six soils.
Comparison of Nitrous Oxide Consumption of Paddy Soils Developed from Three Parent Materials in Subtropical China

Abstract:Paddy soils developed from various parent materials are widely distributed in the subtropical region in China and have a non-negligible but unclear potential to consume nitrous oxide (N2O) due to long-term flooding. This study selected three of the most common paddy soils in subtropical China, developing from quaternary red soil (R), lake sediment sand (S), and alluvial soil (C), to study their total N2O consumption and total nitrogen (N2) production using N2-free microcosm experiments. These paddy soils were treated with N2O addition (N2O treatment) or helium (He) addition (CK treatment) and incubated under flooding and anoxic conditions. The results showed that three alluvial soils (C1, C2, and C3) consumed over 99.93% of the N2O accumulated in the soil profile, significantly higher than R and S soils (p < 0.05). And the N2 production in three C soils was also significantly higher than other soils, accounting for 81.61% of the total N2O consumption. The main soil factors affecting N2O consumption in C, S, and R soils were soil clay content (p < 0.05), soil sand content (R2 = 0.95, p < 0.001), and soil available potassium (AK) (p < 0.01), respectively. These results indicate flooding paddy soils, no matter the parent materials developed, could consume extremely large amount of N2O produced in soil profiles.

Abstract:Red paddy soils in southern China originate from various parent materials; however, the respective characteristics of carbon sequestration efficiency (CSE) are unclear. Here, three cultivated land monitoring sites in Jiangxi province were examined, with soils originating from argillaceous rock, quaternary red clay, and granite. We assessed crop yield and soil physicochemical properties over several years and measured soil organic carbon (SOC) storage, SOC fractions, and chemical structure in 2019 to test differences in CSE characteristics, SOC structure stability, and factors affecting red paddy soils. △SOC storage under long‐term fertilization showed the following descending order: red paddy soils derived from argillaceous rock (1.10 t ha–1 y–1) > granite (0.75 t ha–1 y–1) > quaternary red clay (0.12 t ha–1 y–1); the order of CSE was granite (0.24) > argillaceous rock (0.22) > quaternary red clay (0.08). Red paddy soil from argillaceous rock had the highest proportion of recalcitrant organic carbon (ROC) and SOC stability (aromaticity 0.45). Red paddy soil originating from granite had the lowest ROC proportion (54%) and SOC stability (aromaticity 0.35). Soil properties, organic carbon (OC) input and amount of N fertilizer explained 53.6% of the total CSE variation. SOC, pH, and OC input were the main factors affecting CSE, with relative contribution rates of 36.4%, 6.2%, and 6.3%, respectively. pH (30.4%) was the main factor affecting CSE variation in argillaceous rock paddy soil. SOC (52.2%) was the main factor explain CSE variation in quaternary red clay‐derived red paddy soil. SOC and OC input explained 39.4% and 21.3% of the variation in CSE in granite‐derived paddy soils. [Characteristics of soil nitrate accumulation and leaching under different long-term nitrogen application rates in winter wheat and summer maize rotation system]

Abstract:Winter wheat and summer maize were the main crops in the North China Plain. While intensive farming system could generally achieve high yield, the perennial large amounts of nitrogen (N) fertilization application cause environmental problems including NO3--N accumulation and leaching at deep soil layer. Here, the effects of different N application rates on soil NO3--N accumulation and leaching in winter wheat-summer maize cropping system were investigated from 2010 to 2016 at Qingyuan County, Hebei Province, China. There were five treatments with N application rates at 0 (N0), 100 (N100), 180 (N180), 255 (N255) and 330 (N330) kg·hm-2. Results showed that crop yield and soil N status significantly varied among treatments for both wheat and maize after each harvest, respectively. Soil NO3--N were accumulated during winter wheat growing season and leached to deeper soil during summer maize growing season. Moreover, the soil NO3--N accumulation amount in the 90 to 180 cm soil profile decreased with the decreases of N inputs (N330 > N255 > N180 > N100 > N0). Soil NO3--N could be leached to 990 cm soil depth. There were six NO3--N accumulation peaks in the soil profile, with the peaks presenting at deeper soil profile with higher N fertilization rate. The deepest peak appeared at 840 cm soil depth with the N application rate of 330 kg·hm-2. From the distribution of NO3--N accumulation in the soil profile, only around 10% of total NO3--N was accumulated between 0-90 cm soil depth, while the rest accumulated below 90 cm, which could not be largely absorbed by plants. Therefore, NO3--N leaching during summer maize growing season was serious and it was greater with higher N fertilization rate which might lead to increased risk of underground water contamination. In terms of balanced crop yield and soil NO3--N accumulation, the rate of 180 kg·hm-2 would be the optimum one in areas with similar cultivation and environmental conditions to the present study.
[Impacts of Co-application of Chemical Fertilizer Reduction and Organic Material Amendment on Fluvo-aquic Soil Microbial N-cycling Functional Gene Abundances and N-converting Genetic Potentials in Northern China]

Abstract:The emerging environment-associated issues due to the overuse of inorganic fertilizers in agricultural production are of global concern despite the benefit of high yields. Eco-friendly organic materials with the capability to fertilize soil are encouraged to partially replace mineral fertilizer. The N cycle conducted by soil microorganisms is the most important biogeochemical process, dictating the N bioavailability in farmland ecosystems; however, little is known about how organic material amendment affects soil microbial N cycling under chemical fertilizer reduction. Hence, a fixed field trial with five fertilization practices was implemented to experimentally alter microorganisms essential for the soil N cycle, including conventional chemical fertilization (NPK), reduced chemical fertilization (NPKR), reduced chemical fertilization plus straw (NPKRS), reduced chemical fertilization plus organic fertilizer (NPKRO), and reduced chemical fertilization plus organic fertilizer and straw (NPKROS). The microbial N-cycling gene abundances and associated N-converting genetic potentials were evaluated using real-time quantitative PCR. In comparison to conventional chemical fertilization (NPK), organic addition significantly increased the amounts of heterotrophic microbes involved in organic N decomposition, N fixation, and N reduction; however, it reduced autotrophic microbes performing ammonia oxidization. Consequently, the overall proportion of heterotrophic microbes was remarkably enhanced, and the autotrophic proportion was correspondingly lowered. The fertilization practice shift significantly improved N fixation and gaseous N emission potentials, whereas it suppressed NO3- leaching potential. A significant discrepancy among five fertilization treatments was observed based on functional gene abundances (PERMANOVA, P=0.002),as revealed by distance-based redundancy analysis (db-RDA), with NH4+ as the dominant factor. Organic fertilizer addition was beneficial for heterotrophic N functional microorganisms, with simultaneous input of straw augmenting such an effect. Pearson's correlation analysis revealed that N storage and gaseous N emission potentials were both substantially negatively correlated with NH4+; NO3- leaching potential was notably negatively associated with SOC and TN but significantly related to NH4+. In conclusion, chemical fertilizer reduction combined with organic material amendments, a main fertilization recommendation, may enhance soil N storage, diminish N loss by leaching, and mitigate the environmental risk of N2O emission. This deserves attention considering that healthy and sustainable agricultural soil environment can be cultivated from the view of microbial N-cycling.
Nitrate runoff loss and source apportionment in a typical subtropical agricultural watershed

Abstract:Nitrate (NO3−) loss and enrichment in water bodies caused by fertilization are a major environmental problem in agricultural areas. However, the quantitative contribution of different NO3− sources, especially chemical fertilizers (CF) and soil organic nitrogen (SON), to NO3− runoff loss remains unclear. In this study, a systematic investigation of NO3− runoff and its sources was conducted in a subtropical agricultural watershed located in Yujiang County, Jiangxi Province, China. A semi-monthly sampling was performed at the inlet and outlet from March 2018 to February 2019. Hydrochemical and dual NO3− isotope (15 N and 18O) approaches were combined to estimate the NO3− runoff loss and quantify the contribution of different sources with a Bayesian isotope mixing model. Source apportionment by Stable Isotope Analysis in R (SIAR) suggested that NO3− in runoff was mainly derived from nitrification of ammonium (NH4+) mineralized from SON (37–52%) and manure/sewage (M&S) (25–47%), while the contribution of CF was relatively small (14–25%). The contribution of various sources showed seasonal variations, with a greater contribution of CF in the wet growing season (March to August). Compared with the inlet which contributed 37–40% to runoff NO3−, SON contributed more at the outlet (49–52%). Denitrification in the runoff was small and appeared to be confined to the dry season (September to February), with an estimated NO3− loss of 2.73 kg N ha−1. The net NO3− runoff loss of the watershed was 34.5 kg N ha−1 yr−1, accounting for 15% of the annual fertilization rate (229 kg N ha−1 yr−1). Besides M&S (22%), fertilization and remineralization of SON (CF + SON) were the main sources for the NO3− runoff loss (78%), suggesting accelerated nitrification of NH4+ from CF (24%) and SON mineralization (54%). Our study indicates that NO3− runoff loss in subtropical agricultural watersheds is dominated by nonpoint source pollution from fertilization. SON played a more important role than CF. Besides, the contribution of sewage should not be neglected. Our data suggest that a combination of more rational fertilizer N application (CF), better management of SON, and better treatment of domestic sewage could alleviate NO3− pollution in subtropical China.

Abstract:Abstract Soil acidification in croplands is largely affected by various fertilization practices in long-term scales. However, the differences from the sources and sinks of proton in agroecosystems between long-term fertilization practices are poorly understood. Based on the role of the carbon and nitrogen cycle in soil acidification, experimental data from 1991 to 2006 involving wheat (Triticum aestivum) and maize (Zea mays) rotation in the upland red soil of south China was used to advance the methodology for quantifying soil acidification in croplands. One no-fertilizer control and seven fertilization treatments with 300 kg ha−1 year−1 nitrogen were analyzed in the study. Soil net acid addition rates (NAAR) in the long-term scale were significantly and positively correlated (P < 0.01, n = 8), with rates of decline in topsoil pH varying from 0.006 to 0.122 units year−1. Total proton sources with similar values (17.73–19.53 Kmol ha−1 year−1) and the negative and linear correlation between the effects of nitrogen cycle (HNCE) and carbon cycle (HCCE) were found under all fertilization treatments. Characterized as the distribution of a larger percentage in HCCE than in HNCE, mineral fertilizer amendments with manure at the appropriate nitrogen rate should be regarded as the optimal nutrient-management strategy for sustainable agriculture in the upland red soil.
Effects of different agronomic practices on the selective soil properties and nitrogen leaching of black soil in Northeast China

Abstract:Abstract Considering the large amount and high frequency application of concentrated fertilizer nitrogen in the Black Soil Region of Northeast China, the current laboratory/field simulation study aimed to explore the pollution risk of added nitrogen in black soil to groundwater and identify effective measures to prevent and control soil nitrogen leaching with an undisturbed soil column. The results showed that the saturated nitrogen adsorption capacities increased by 1.7%, 7.7% and 18.5% in ploughing, impervious agent (starch grafted polyacrylic acid) addition, and corn straw returning treatments, respectively, relative to the control (no-till). When the collection volume of the leaching solution reached the experimental maximum (4,000 mL), the total amount of nitrogen leaching from the control soil column (i.e., the no-tillage treatment) accounted for more than 50% of the added nitrogen, indicating a great risk of nitrogen pollution in groundwater. Compared with the no-tillage treatment, the amount of nitrogen leaching from the ploughing treatment increased insignificantly, and the amount of nitrogen leaching in the following spring in the corn straw returning treatment increased by 11.2%. The amount of nitrogen leaching decreased by 12.5% in the soil sampled in autumn of the second year. The total amount of nitrogen leaching in the soil with impervious agents decreased by 40.1%. Therefore, the permeability-reducing agent could significantly reduce underground water pollution risk posed by nitrogen leaching.

Organic C and N mineralization as affected by dissolved organic matter in paddy soils of subtropical China

Abstract:In this study, dynamics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and mineralization of soil organic C and N in subtropical China were investigated. Paddy and upland soils were derived from Tertiary sandstone, Quaternary red clay and river alluvium with low, middle, and high levels of soil fertility. Dissolved organic carbon contents (DOC) varied from 3.8 to 68.7mg/kg and dissolved organic nitrogen contents (DON) ranged from 2.9 to 18.3mg/kg, respectively, during the experimental period. Both DOC and DON increased with increasing soil fertility. The content of DOM was characterized by strong seasonal fluctuation in soils, and seasonal patterns showed the maximum value in Nov and the minimum in July. The contribution of DOM to mineralization of C and N was significantly affected by soil types and seasons. DOM removal significantly decreased the cumulative organic C mineralization in soils derived from Tertiary sandstone and River alluvium (by 1.6%–20.3% with an average of 7.1%), while it did not significantly change those in soils derived from Quaternary red clay. Similarly, the cumulative mineralization of N in paddy soils after DOM removal decreased by 6.7%–27.3% over seasons. In this study, DOM played an important role in soil C and N mineralization in subtropical China. It appears that contribution of DOM to minerilization of C and N in paddy soils was possibly related to DOM content and composition.

Effects of nitrogen fertilizer and irrigation rate on nitrate present in the profile of a sandy farmland in Northwest China

Abstract:A field experiment was established on a representative sandy soil field to evaluate the effect of nitrogen(N) fertilizer and irrigation application rates on nitrate (NO3--N) present in the soil profile during two consecutive years (2006- 2007). The results revealed that crop yields were not significantly enhanced at N application rate over than 225kg/ha and were not significantly reduced when 75% of traditional irrigation rates (12000 m3/ha) were supplied. The amounts of NO3--N accumulation in soil ranged from 9.81 to 87.83kg/ha significantly increased with N application rates. Compared with reduced irrigation rates, NO3--N accumulations were obviously decreased in the 0-100cm soil layer but increased in the 200-300cm soil layer on traditional irrigation rate. The results of this study indicate that excess N fertilizer and irrigation application rates have been provide for crop, and cause more NO3--N leaching. However, there was a great potential for reducing N fertilizer and irrigation water inputs to mitigate nitrate accumulation and leaching in the profiles of this sandy farmland region.

Abstract:The objectives of this study were to explore the effects of long-term and continued application of fertilizers and manures on microbial biomass, soil biological activity and their seasonal variations in surface and subsurface soils in relation to soil fertility. For this, soils were sampled in spring, summer and autumn from Shenyang Long-term Experimental Station, northeastern China. The results showed that soil total nitrogen (N), organic carbon (C), basal respiration, microbial biomass and enzymatic activity increased in manure-amended surface soils, but decreased with soil depth. Long-term application of inorganic fertilizers significantly decreased soil pH value, sucrase activity and microbial biomass C, but increased soil metabolic quotient (qCO2). However, no significant effect of inorganic fertilizers on soil total N, urease activity and microbial biomass N was observed in comparison with CK0 (neither tillage nor fertilization) and CK (no fertilizers). There was no significant difference between CK0 and CK in soil total N, organic C and microbial activity in surface soil layer (0–20 cm), but these parameters in subsurface soil layer (20–40 cm) were higher in CK than in CK0. Moreover, seasonal changes were observed in terms of soil nutrient contents, enzymatic activity, microbial biomass and soil respiration. There were significant correlations between soil microbial biomass C and N, between organic C and sucrase activity and between total N and urease activity, respectively. It is recommended that combined use of organic manure with inorganic fertilizers should be considered to maintain higher microbial biomass, soil biological activity and soil fertility. Considering considerably high nutrients reserve and microbial activity in subsurface layers of soil and wind-erosion-caused nutrient loss in spring in north China, we also propose that low tillage should be considered to make use of nutrients in soils.
Nitrate accumulation and leaching potential is controlled by land-use and extreme precipitation in a headwater catchment in the North China Plain

Abstract:Nitrate in groundwater is increasing in hilly areas of the world due to diverse land-uses and intensified anthropogenic activity. However, the key factors that control nitrate in groundwater as it leaches through the thin vadose zone are still poorly understood. In this study, the behavior of nitrate in the vadose zone during a normal year (2015) and a wet year (2016) were investigated in a cultivated farmland (FL) under wheat-maize double cropping and a field of natural vegetation (NV) in a headwater region of the Taihang Mountain. Water chemistry and N balances were quantified to estimate the accumulation and leaching of nitrate. Transport and fate of nitrate in the vadose zone were identified using stable isotopes of nitrate (δ18O-NO3-, δ15N-NO3-). Accumulation of NO3- was mainly in the shallow layer (0-50 cm) under both NV and FL in 2015. After large rain events (20-50 mm/day) during the rainy season in 2015, the leaching rates of NO3- at NV and FL sites were 86.04 and 9.61 kg/hm2, respectively. The accumulation of NO3- decreased 30% and 7% at NV and FL, respectively. However, the leaching rates of NO3- were 63.8 and 22.63 kg/hm2, and the accumulation of NO3- decreased 84% and 43% at NV and FL after extreme precipitation in 2016, respectively. Additionally, nitrate isotopes indicated that the different sources of nitrate in soil water were due to the land-use. However, nitrate isotopes showed that increased nitrate concentrations in groundwater at two sites in 2016 were due to the extreme precipitation. Accumulated high nitrate in surface soil in a normal year and leaching after extreme precipitation lead to increased nitrate concentration in groundwater, which poses a major threat in the future. The results are critical for informing land-use and water management when mitigating groundwater contamination in hilly area.
Deep Nitrate Accumulation in a Highly Weathered Subtropical Critical Zone Depends on the Regolith Structure and Planting Year

Abstract:Nitrate accumulated deep (>100 cm) in the regolith (soil and saprolite) threatens groundwater quality, but most studies focus only on nitrate nearer the surface (<100 cm). Surface soil management versus regolith interactions affect deep nitrate leaching, but their combined impact remains unclear. This study measured how deep nitrate accumulation was affected by crop practices including orchard/cropland planting years, regolith structure, and soil properties in highly weathered subtropical red soils. Deep nitrate storage varied from 43.6 to 1116.3 kg ha–1. Regolith thickness was positively correlated with nitrate storage (R2 = 0.43, p < 0.05). Reticulated red clay (110–838 cm) had 81% of the accumulated nitrate and overlapped with 79% of the nitrate accumulation layer. All of the nitrate accumulation parameters (except for peak depth (PD)) generally increased with the planting years. The difference in peak nitrate concentration (9.0–20.0 mg kg–1) with planting year gradient (3–58 years) varied by 2.2 times, and the difference in nitrate storage (43.6–425.7 kg ha–1) varied by 9.8 times. Texture and pH explain 41.6% of the variation in nitrate concentration. Abstract:CO2 efflux plays a key role in carbon exchange between the biosphere and atmosphere, but our understanding of the mechanism controlling its temporal and spatial variations is limited. The purpose of this study is to determine annual soil CO2 flux and assess its variations in arable subtropical soils of China in relation to soil temperature, moisture, rainfall, microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) using the closed chamber method. Soils were derived from three parent materials including granite (G), tertiary red sandstone (T) and quaternary red clay (Q). The experiment was conducted at the Ecological Station of Red Soil, The Chinese Academy of Sciences, in a subtropical region of China. The results showed that soil CO2 flux had clear seasonal fluctuations with the maximum value in summer, the minimum in winter and intermediate in spring and autumn. Further, significant differences in soil CO2 flux were found among the three red soils, generally in the order of G>T>Q. The average annual fluxes were estimated as 2.84, 2.13 and 1.41kgCO2m−2year−1 for red soils derived from G, T and Q, respectively. Soil temperature strongly affects the seasonal variability of soil CO2 flux (85.0–88.5% of the variability), followed by DOC (55.8–84.4%) and rainfall (43.0–55.8%). The differences in soil CO2 flux among the three red soils were partly explained by MBC (33.7–58.9% of the variability) and DOC (23.8–33.6%).

Abstract:Nitrate (NO3-) pollution of groundwater is a global concern in agricultural areas. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the sources and destiny of nitrate in soil and groundwater within intensive agricultural areas, this study employed a combination of chemical indicators, dual isotopes of nitrate (δ15N-NO3- and δ18O-NO3-), random forest model, and Bayesian stable isotope mixing model (MixSIAR). These approaches were utilized to examine the spatial distribution of NO3- in soil profiles and groundwater, identify key variables influencing groundwater nitrate concentration, and quantify the sources contribution at various depths of the vadose zone and groundwater with different nitrate concentrations. The results showed that the nitrate accumulation in the cropland and kiwifruit orchard at depths of 0-400 cm increased, leading to subsequent leaching of nitrate into deeper vadose zones and ultimately groundwater. The mean concentration of nitrate in groundwater was 91.89 mg/L, and 52.94% of the samples exceeded the recommended grade III value (88.57 mg/L) according to national standards. The results of the random forest model suggested that the main variables affecting the nitrate concentration in groundwater were well depth (16.6%), dissolved oxygen (11.6%), and soil nitrate (10.4%). The MixSIAR results revealed that nitrate sources vary at different soil depths, which was caused by the biogeochemical process of nitrate. In addition, the highest contribution of nitrate in groundwater, both with high and low concentrations, was found to be soil nitrogen (SN), accounting for 56.0% and 63.0%, respectively, followed by chemical fertilizer (CF) and manure and sewage (M&S). Through the identification of NO3- pollution sources, this study can take targeted measures to ensure the safety of groundwater in intensive agricultural areas.

Abstract:The impact of chemical to organic fertilizer substitution on soil labile organic and stabilized N pools under intensive farming systems is unclear. Therefore, we analyzed the distribution of soil total N (STN), particulate organic N (PON), microbial biomass N (MBN), dissolved organic N (DON), and mineral N (NO3− and NH4+) levels down to 100 cm profile under wheat–maize rotation system in northern China. The experiment was established with four 270 kg ha−1 N equivalent fertilizer treatments: Organic manure (OM); Organic manure with nitrogen fertilizer (OM + NF); Nitrogen fertilizer (NF); and Control (CK). Results found that the OM and OM + NF treatments had significantly higher STN, PON, MBN, DON, and NO3− contents in 0–20 cm topsoil depths. Conversely, the NF treatment resulted in the highest (p < 0.01) DON and NO3− depositions in 40–100 cm subsoil depths. The NH4+ contents in selected profile depths were significantly highest (p < 0.01) under OM treatment. The correlations between STN and its fractions were positively significant at 0–10 and 10–20 cm topsoil depths. Our results suggest that partial substitution of chemical fertilizer with organic manure could be a sustainable option for soil N management of intensive farming systems.

Abstract:Agricultural soils account for more than 50% of nitrogen leaching (LN) to groundwater in China. When excess levels of nitrogen accumulate in groundwater, it poses a risk of adverse health effects. Despite this recognition, estimation of LN from cropland soils in a broad spatial scale is still quite uncertain in China. The uncertainty of LN primarily stems from the shape of nitrogen leaching response to fertilizer additions (N rate) and the role of environmental conditions. On the basis of 453 site-years at 51 sites across China, we explored the nonlinearity and variability of the response of LN to N rate and developed an empirical statistical model to determine how environmental factors regulate the rate of N leaching (LR). The result shows that LN-N rate relationship is convex for most crop types, and varies by local hydro-climates and soil organic carbon. Variability of air temperature explains a half (∼ 52%) of the spatial variation of LR. The results of model calibration and validation indicate that incorporating this empirical knowledge into a predictive model could accurately capture the variation in leaching and produce a reasonable upscaling from site to country. The fertilizer-induced LN in 2008 for China's cropland were 0.88 ± 0.23 TgN (1σ), significantly lower than the linear or uniform model, as assumed by Food and Agriculture Organization and MITERRA-EUROPE models. These results also imply that future policy to reduce N leaching from cropland needs to consider environmental variability rather than solely attempt to reduce N rate.
