Abstract:Introduction: This single blind study was conducted to address safety concerns regarding co-administration of diphtheria/ tetanus (DT,Td) boosters and meningococcal C conjugate (MCC) vaccines containing diphtheria or tetanus conjugate proteins. Methods: 1754 subjects (835 preschoolers and 919 school leavers) were randomised to receive one of three MCC products a month before, after or at the same as routine DT or Td boosters. They (or their parents) completed a health diary for 10 days to record local reactions and systemic symptoms after each vaccination. The effect of antibody levels pre- and post-vaccination, pre-existing allergies and medication taken before and for up to ten days after vaccination on reactogenicity was assessed. Results: No relationship between pre-vaccination antibody levels and local reactions or systemic symptoms was found. Local reactions were more common after DT/Td than MCC vaccination and were related to post-vaccination diphtheria and tetanus antibody levels in younger children and to the post-vaccination tetanus only antibody levels in older children. Pre-existing allergies were not related to reactogenicity. Use of analgesics/ antipyretic medication significantly reduced the incidence of local reactions and of some systemic symptoms. In the first three days after vaccination there was an excess of some systemic symptoms including fatigue/ malaise and headache for all ages, and crying/ irritability for younger children and nausea/ vomiting and dizziness/ faintness for older subjects. Eleven serious adverse events were reported, none of which was deemed related to vaccination. Conclusion: MCC vaccines can be given under the above schedules and safely in the presence of raised diphtheria and tetanus antibody levels without materially altering reactogenicity profiles of either vaccine.

Abstract:The present study systematically assessed the presence and ecological risks of 79 pesticides in various aquaculture systems, namely pond aquaculture (PA), greenhouse aquaculture (GA), and raceway aquaculture (RA) at different aquaculture stages, along with evaluating the pesticide removal of four tailwater treatment systems. Sixteen herbicides and two fungicides were identified, with the total concentrations ranging from 8.33 ng/L to 3248.45 ng/L. The PA system demonstrated significantly higher concentrations ( p < 0.05) and a wider range of pesticide residues compared to the GA and RA systems. Prometryn, simetryn, atrazine, and thifluzamide were found to be the predominant pesticides across all three aquaculture modes, suggesting their significance as pollutants that warrant monitoring. Additionally, the findings indicated that the early aquaculture stage exhibits the highest levels of pesticide concentration, underscoring the importance of heightened monitoring and regulatory interventions during this phase. Furthermore, among the four tailwater treatment systems analyzed, the recirculating tailwater treatment system exhibited the highest efficacy in pesticide removal. A comprehensive risk assessment revealed minimal ecological risks in both the aquaculture and tailwater environments. However, the pesticide mixtures present high risks to algae and low to medium risks to aquatic invertebrates and fish, particularly during the early stages of aquaculture. Simetryn and prometryn were identified as high-risk pesticides. Based on the prioritization index, simetryn, prometryn, diuron, and ametryn are recommended for prioritization in risk assessment. This study offers valuable data for pesticide control and serves as a reference for the establishment of a standardized pesticide monitoring and management system at various stages of aquaculture.

Abstract:Antibiotics play an essential role in the aquaculture industry, but their overuse and weak degradability inevitably lead to light to severe residues in natural and aquaculture environments. Most studies were interested in the occurrence, distribution, and ecological risks of a limited number of antibiotics in natural environments (rivers, lakes, and coastal regions) with a minor focus on antibiotic presence in either water, sediments, or organisms in aquaculture environments located in specific regions. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive investigation into the occurrence and distribution of up to 32 antibiotics [including 15 quinolones (QNs) and 17 sulfonamides (SAs)] in organisms and their corresponding environmental matrices from 26 freshwater aquaculture ponds in Northeast Zhejiang, China. A total of 13, 9, 7, and 7 antibiotics were detected in pond water, sediments, feeds, and aquaculture organisms, respectively, with concentration ranges of 0.6-92.2 ng/L, 0.4-1169.3 ng/g dw, <LOD-17.5 ng/g dw, and < LOD-234.3 ng/g ww, respectively, where enrofloxacin (ENR) was the main component in different matrix samples, with a proportion range of 51 %-88 %. There were differences in the predominant antibiotic and concentration abundance among fishponds, shrimp ponds, crab ponds, and turtle ponds. Feed was likely one of the most essential source of antibiotics in freshwater aquaculture ponds. The risk quotient (RQ) results revealed that ciprofloxacin (CIP) and ENR showed high risks to algae in water at the maximum measured concentrations and norfloxacin (NOR), CIP, ENR, and ofloxacin (OFL) exhibited high risks in sediments. However, the joint probability curve (JPC) showed acceptable risk in water. On the basis of the calculated hazard quotients (HQ < 1), the risk of human antibiotic ingestion through aquaculture organisms was acceptable. These results suggest that the rational control of antibiotic use is necessary for human health and ecological security.

Abstract:Antibiotics have been widely used to prevent or treat bacterial infections in aquaculture in the past decades. However, large proportions of these compounds are excreted unchanged in feces and urine of animals, given incomplete metabolism, leading to the residual of unmetabolized compounds, and posing a potential risk to the environment. This study investigated the occurrence and distribution of seven antibiotics in surface water, sediments, fish muscle, and fish feed by high-performance liquid chromatography from the aquaculture areas in Guilin, South of China. The highest concentrations of the target antibiotics in water, sediment, fish muscle, and fish feed were 2047.53 ng/L, 13.32 μg/kg, 35.90 μg/kg, and 2203.97 μg/kg, respectively. In contrast, the most abundant antibiotic was enrofloxacin (ENR), followed by ofloxacin (OFL), sulfadimidine (SMZ), and ciprofloxacin (CIP). In this work, the concentrations of antibiotics were lower than those in other breeding areas. Correlation analyses showed significant relationships between sulfadiazine (SDZ) and TP, TN, and CODCr in water. In sediment, the release of SDZ was significantly related to TN, TP, and organic matter. The risk quotient (RQ) results revealed that sulfamethoxazole (SMX), CIP, and ENR were at high risk to microorganisms in water; while, SMX and NOR were at high risk in sediments. The result from the estimated daily intakes (health risk quotient, HQ < 1) suggested that the antibiotics might not pose a risk to human health by dietary exposure assessment; however, sediments may become an accumulation reservoir of antibiotics and cause secondary pollution, of which the local management should raise awareness.

Abstract:An environmental risk assessment was performed for pharmaceutical compounds present in the aquatic environment of China. Predicted environmental concentration (PEC) of the compounds were calculated according to European Medicines Evaluation Agency (EMEA) guidelines. Available ecotoxicological data compromised by applying a very conservative assessment factor (AF) were employed to calculate the predicted noeffect concentration (PNEC). The screening principle and the risk assessment were based on risk quotient (RQ), which derived from the PEC and related PNEC values. PEC results indicated that all the compounds except sulfadimethoxine and levocarnitine, should carry out phase II risk assessment in EMEA guideline. RQ values suggested that more than 36 pharmaceuticals may be imposed health threats to the aquatic environment; especially the antibiotic therapeutic class including amoxicillin, sulfasalazine, trimethoprim, oxytetracycline and erythromycin showed high RQ values. These substances with high RQ value (RQ⩾1) were regarded as toppriority pharmaceuticals for control in the aquatic environment of China. However, the antibiotic substances which had low risk quotient (RQ <1), should be reassessed by its potentially induced resistance under low concentration in future.
Occurrence and ecological risks of 156 pharmaceuticals and 296 pesticides in seawater from mariculture areas of Northeast China

Abstract:China is the largest mariculture producer in the world. In recent years, pharmaceuticals and pesticides have been widely used in mariculture activities; however, most studies have only focused on the occurrence of limited types of antibiotics and organochlorine pesticides. It is critical to comprehensively investigate the occurrence of pharmaceuticals and pesticides in mariculture areas and assess their potential impacts on ocean ecosystems. In this study, the occurrence, distribution, and ecological risk of 484 compounds, including 296 pesticides, 156 pharmaceuticals, and 32 other substances, in the drainage ditches of culture ponds and raft-culture areas were investigated. A total of 51 compounds were detected in the mariculture area, with total concentrations ranging from 5.4 × 102 to 2.0 × 104 ng/L at each sampling site. Eleven pesticides, three pharmaceuticals, and five other compounds were detected with detection frequencies of 100%. The cluster analysis indicated that mariculture is a source of herbicide pollution in coastal waters. To assess the ecological risks of the detected compounds, toxicity data collected from the database and predicted from quantitative structure activity relationship (QSAR) models were used to calculate the risk quotients and probabilistic risks. According to the risk quotients, five pollutants, including diuron, ametryn, prometryne, simetryn, and terbutryn, were estimated to pose high risks to marine organisms. The results of the probabilistic risk assessment indicated that only diuron, a biocide used in antifouling paint and mariculture, would have an adverse effect on up to 8% of the aquatic species in nearshore areas. These findings could be helpful in determining the aquatic benchmarks of pesticides and pharmaceuticals in mariculture discharge to promote the sustainable development of mariculture and ecological protection in coastal areas.

Abstract:Antibiotics are largely applied in aquaculture to increase production and control diseases, while how the antibiotics used in pond farming influence the distribution of antibiotics in receiving water seasonally is still not well understood. In this study, the variations of 15 frequently used antibiotics in Honghu Lake and surrounding ponds were investigated seasonally to figure out the impact of pond farming on antibiotics distributions in Honghu Lake. Results showed that the antibiotic concentrations in fish ponds ranged from 11.76 to 389.8 ng/L, while in crab and crayfish ponds were lower than 30.49 ng/L. The predominant antibiotic in fish ponds was florfenicol, followed by sulfonamides and quinolones, with generally low concentrations. Sulfonamides and florfenicol were the main antibiotics in Honghu Lake, affected by the surrounding aquaculture water partially. The antibiotics residue in aquaculture ponds showed obvious seasonal characteristics, with the lowest in spring. From summer, the concentrations of antibiotics in aquaculture ponds gradually increased and reached a peak in autumn, and the seasonal variation of antibiotics in the receiving lake was also related to the antibiotics in the aquaculture ponds. Risk assessment analysis showed that antibiotics such as enrofloxacin and florfenicol in fish ponds posed a medium and low risk to algae, and Honghu Lake acted as a natural reservoir of antibiotics and poses increased risks to algae. In general, our study demonstrated that aquaculture represented by pond farming brought significant risks of antibiotic pollution to natural water bodies. Therefore, reasonable control of the fish antibiotics usage in autumn and winter, as well as the rational use of antibiotics in aquaculture and the use of antibiotics before pond cleaning, is required to reduce the migration of antibiotics from aquaculture surface water to the receiving lake.

Abstract:China is one of the largest producers and consumers of pesticides in the world today. Along with the widespread use of pesticides and industrialization, there is a growing concern for water quality. The present review aims to provide an overview of studies on pesticides in aquatic environments in China. The levels in the water, sediment and biota were scored according to a detailed environmental classification system based on ecotoxicological effect, which is therefore a useful tool for assessing the risk these compounds pose to the aquatic ecosystem. Our review reveals that the most studied areas in China are the most populated and the most developed economically and that the most frequently studied pesticides are DDT and HCH. We show maps of where studies have been conducted and show the ecotoxicological risk the pesticides pose in each of the matrices. Our review pinpoints the need for biota samples to assess the risk. A large fraction of the results from the studies are given an environmental classification of "very bad" based on levels in biota. In general, the risk is higher for DDT than HCH. A few food web studies have also been conducted, and we encourage further study of this important information from this region. The review reveals that many of the most important agricultural provinces (e.g., Henan, Hubei and Hunan) with the largest pesticide use have been the subject of few studies on the environmental levels of pesticides. We consider this to be a major knowledge gap for understanding the status of pesticide contamination and related risk in China. Furthermore, there is also a lack of studies in remote Chinese environments, which is also an important knowledge gap. The compounds analyzed and reported in the studies represent a serious bias because a great deal of attention is given to DDT and HCH, whereas the organophosphate insecticides dominating current use are less frequently investigated. For the future, we point to the need for an organized monitoring plan designed according to the knowledge gaps in terms of geographical distribution, compounds included, and risks.
Usage, residue, and human health risk of antibiotics in Chinese aquaculture: A review

Abstract:Aquaculture is a booming industry in the world and China is the largest producer and exporter of aquatic products. To prevent and treat diseases occurred in aquaculture, antibiotics are widely applied. However, the information of antibiotics used in Chinese aquaculture is still limited. Based on peer-reviewed papers, documents, reports, and even farmer surveys, this review summarized antibiotics used in Chinese aquaculture. In 2014, more than 47.4 million tonnes of farmed aquatic products were produced in mainland China. The outputs in the east and south parts of China can reach as much as 600 times higher than those in the northwest areas, which is clearly separated by the "Hu Line" - a line that marks a striking difference in the distribution of population. A total of 20 antibiotics belonging to eight categories have been reported for use, mainly via oral administration. However, only 13 antibiotics have been authorized for application in Chinese aquaculture and 12 antibiotics used are not authorized. Totally, 234 cases on antibiotic residues in Chinese aquatic products were recorded, including 24 fish species, eight crustacean species, and four mollusk species. Thirty-two antibiotics have been detected in aquatic products; quinolones and sulfonamides were the dominated residual chemicals. For specific compound, ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, and sulfisoxazole have the highest concentrations. Except for a few cases, all residual concentrations were lower than the maximum residue limits. Through the consumption of aquatic products tainted by antibiotics, humans may acquire adverse drug reactions or antibiotic-resistant bacteria. However, the risk of antimicrobial resistance in human body, when exposed to antibiotics at sub-inhibitory concentrations, has not been exhaustively considered in the risk assessment. In addition, a national comprehensive investigation on the amount of antibiotics used in Chinese aquaculture is still needed in future studies.

Restoration of bone defects using modified heterogeneous deproteinized bone seeded with bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells.

Abstract:The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of modified heterogeneous deproteinized bone combined with bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) in the restoration of a validated bone defect model. BMSCs were identified by flow cytometry and multilineage differentiation assay. The structural features of the modified heterogeneous deproteinized bone scaffold and biocompatibility between BMSCs and the scaffold were confirmed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) detection. The cytotoxicity of the modified heterogeneous deproteinized bone scaffolds were detected by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenytetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. SEM detection proved that modified heterogeneous deproteinized bone scaffold had no negative impact on the proliferation of BMSCs. MTT assay results demonstrated that the scaffold had no apparent cytotoxicity. Biomechanical detection showed that the stiffness and ultimate loading of tibias in the scaffold + BMSCs group were significantly higher than those of the scaffold alone group (P < 0.05) and the control group (P < 0.01). Histological analyses confirmed that the greatest quantity of new bone was generated in the scaffold + BMSCs group, when compared with all other groups, at 8 weeks' post-operation. The bone mineral density (BMD) in the scaffold + BMSC group was significantly higher than that of the scaffold alone group (P < 0.05) and the control group (P < 0.01). Fluorometric analyses confirmed the presence of BMSCs at high concentration within the bone defect areas in the scaffold + BMSCs group at 4 weeks after transplantation. These findings suggest that the modified heterogeneous deproteinized bone scaffold seeded with BMSCs can effectively enhance the restoration of bone defects.
Distribution and ecological risk assessment of antibiotics in different freshwater aquaculture ponds in a typical agricultural plain, China

Abstract:Freshwater aquaculture serves as a significant focal point for antibiotic contamination, yet understanding antibiotic distribution across different aquaculture models and stages remains limited. This study evaluated antibiotic pollution in three distinct freshwater aquaculture models: rice-crayfish coculture, fish aquaculture, and crab-crayfish aquaculture, during various aquaculture stages. Of the 33 target antibiotics, 16 antibiotics were detected, with the total concentrations ranging from 111.81 ng/L to 15,949.05 ng/L in water and 10.11 ng/g to 8986.30 ng/g in sediment. Among these antibiotics, erythromycin and lomefloxacin are prohibited for use in Chinese aquaculture. Dominant antibiotics in water included lincomycin, enrofloxacin, and enoxacin, whereas in sediment, oxytetracycline and erythromycin were predominant. Notably, lincomycin emerged as a dominant antibiotic in aquaculture for the first time. The concentrations of these dominant antibiotics were high compared to other aquaculture settings and exhibited elevated ecological risk. Critical periods for antibiotic contamination in water and sediment were found to be incongruent, occurring during the rainy season in July for water and the dry season in October for sediment. Notably, the rice-crayfish coculture model exerts a good effect in reducing antibiotic pollution. Overall, these findings offer valuable evidence for the healthful and sustainable advancement of aquaculture.
Cross-contamination and ecological risk assessment of antibiotics between rivers and surrounding open aquaculture ponds

Abstract:Antibiotics are causing widespread concern as one of the emerging contaminants. There is the abuse of antibiotics in high-density open aquaculture, and the tailwater is often discharged into surrounding rivers. At the same time, the water replenishment of open aquaculture ponds from nearby rivers containing antibiotic contamination from different sources may result in cross-contamination. However, it is still unclear which pollution intensity is greater in rivers or in open aquaculture. So in this paper, the levels of 20 antibiotics (i.e., Fluoroquinolones (FQs), Sulfonamides (SAs), Tetracyclines (TCs), Macrolides (MLs) and Lincosamides (LCs)) in rivers and high-density open aquaculture ponds were investigated in the Baini River basin in the suburbs of Guangzhou, China. The results showed that norfloxacin (NFX) was the predominant antibiotic in river and aquaculture water, with concentrations ranging from 6.12 to 156.04 ng/L and from 7.47 to 82.62 ng/L in both aquatic systems, respectively. As for the pollution intensity of antibiotics, the annual pollution contribution (28.64 kg/a) of the river water supply to open aquaculture is higher than that (10.81 kg/a) of open aquaculture to the river, which means river pollution has a greater impact on aquaculture ponds. The risk quotient (RQ) showed that the ecological risk of lincomycin (LIN), erythromycin (ERY), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), norfloxacin (NFX), ciprofloxacin (CFX) and chlortetracycline (CTC) in rivers and aquaculture environments had high ecological risks from 1.21 to 1.81. Water interactions with contaminated rivers will result in a corresponding increase in the ecological risk of antibiotics in the aquaculture environment. Overall, according to the results, the risk of polluted rivers to open aquaculture cannot be ignored, and it is recommended that open aquaculture should use these water sources with caution, and that the water quality evaluation of aquaculture water should be increased with monitoring indicators for emerging contaminants such as antibiotics.

Abstract:With the prohibition of conventional organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), the extensive use and continuous release of current-use pesticides (CUPs), such as organic amine pesticides (OAPs) and organophosphate pesticides (OPPs), in agriculture and mariculture activities have raised global attention. In this study, the occurrence and distribution of 36 pesticides from above 3 categories were investigated in seawater and sediment in Beibu Gulf, a typical subtropical agricultural and maricultrual zone. Results showed that pesticides were widely present in this region with the total concentration ranging from 0.36 to 21.07 ng/L in seawater and from 0.02 to 9.73 ng/g dw in sediment. OAPs and OPPs were the most abundant categories contributing 74% and 66% to the total pesticides burden in seawater and sediment, respectively, revealing the current-use pesticides as substitutes of legacy organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were mainly used in surrounding areas. For both seawater and surface sediment, the spatial distribution of pesticides concentrations showed generally seaward decreasing trends, suggesting that anthropogenic activities at coastal areas have an important impact on pesticides pollution. Source identification indicated OCPs in some seawater samples might be from mixture of antifouling paint and dicofol usage, while history residues are main sources of OCPs in sediment. OAPs, especially for cyflufenamid and kresoxim-methyl, mainly come from agricultral and maricultural sewage input, and OPPs were speculated from currency transportation from surrounding areas. Ecological risk assessment showed that OPPs posed moderate to even high risks in most seawater sites. It appears that crustaceans are the most sensitive trophic species to OPPs among aquatic organisms, followed by fish. According to the results of health risks proposed by the major aquatic products in Beibu Gulf (fish and shrimp), the selected pesticides pose no health risk to humans. Nevertheless, OCPs made the highest contribution to the total HQ values. Comprehensively considering the evaluation results of both ecological and health risks, more attention should be given on OPPs and OCPs pollution in the Beibu Gulf.

Occurrence, distribution and potential environmental risks of pollutants in aquaculture ponds during pond cleaning in Taihu Lake Basin, China

Abstract:During the process of cleaning aquaculture ponds, the drainage contributes significantly to antibiotic pollution in the surrounding water environment. Therefore, we conducted a study on the distribution of 26 antibiotics in 57 ponds within the Taihu Lake basin. The results revealed that the detection frequency of antibiotics ranged from 1.75 % to 80.7 %, with the overall detection concentrations ranging from 3.27 to 708.72 ng/L. Among them, the detection rate of 8 antibiotics exceeded 50 %. Regarding the spatial distribution, the concentration of antibiotics was relatively high in aquaculture ponds located in the Changzhou area, with the highest concentration reaching 708.72 ng/L. This observation is likely due to the large size and intensive breeding practices in Changzhou. Fish ponds exhibited a significantly higher total antibiotic concentration of 3.27 to 445.57 ng/L compared to crab ponds (13.01 to 206.30 ng/L) and shrimp ponds (23.17 to 107.40 ng/L). Quinolones and sulfonamides were the predominant antibiotic classes found in fish ponds, accounting for 51.49 % of the total antibiotic concentration. Notably, sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and enrofloxacin (ENR) exhibited the highest antibiotic concentrations. Risk assessments demonstrated that SMX, ENR, and ofloxacin (OFX) contributed significantly to ecological risks. Furthermore, the study found that the tertiary constructed wetland treatment process achieved a remarkable removal rate of 92.44 % for antibiotics in aquaculture wastewater, while other treatment processes displayed limited effectiveness in removing antibiotics. This study addresses the knowledge gap concerning antibiotic pollution during the cleaning process of aquaculture ponds within the Taihu Lake basin.

Abstract:Scientific interest in pollution from antibiotics in animal husbandry has increased during recent years. However, there have been few studies on the vertical exposure characteristics of typical veterinary antibiotics in different exposure matrices from different livestock farms. This study explores the distribution and migration of antibiotics from feed to manure, from manure to soil, and from soil to vegetables, by investigating the exposure level of typical antibiotics in feed, manure, soil, vegetables, water, fish, and pork in livestock farms. A screening environmental risk assessment was conducted to identify the hazardous potential of veterinary antibiotics from livestock farms in southeast China. The results show that adding antibiotics to drinking water as well as the excessive use of antibiotic feed additives may become the major source of antibiotics pollution in livestock farms. Physical and chemical properties significantly affect the distribution and migration of various antibiotics from manure to soil and from soil to plant. Simple migration models can predict the accumulation of antibiotics in soil and plants. The environmental risk assessment results show that more attention should be paid to the terrestrial eco-risk of sulfadiazine, sulfamethazine, sulfamethoxazole, tetracycline, oxytetracycline, chlorotetracycline, ciprofloxacin, and enrofloxacin, and to the aquatic eco-risk of chlorotetracycline, ciprofloxacin, and enrofloxacin. This is the first systematic analysis of the vertical pollution characteristics of typical veterinary antibiotics in livestock farms in southeast China. It also identifies the ecological and human health risk of veterinary antibiotics.
Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products in Water, Sediments, Aquatic Organisms, and Fish Feeds in the Pearl River Delta: Occurrence, Distribution, Potential Sources, and Health Risk Assessment.

Abstract:This study investigated the occurrence, distribution, and potential sources of 34 pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in water, sediments, aquatic organisms (fish and shellfish), and fish feeds from the mariculture areas of the Pearl River Delta (PRD). The health risk presented by this class of compounds was also assessed in relation to their intake via seafood consumption. Of the 34 PPCPs, a total of 9, 21, 14, and 28 PPCPs were detected in water, sediments, fish feeds, and aquatic organisms, respectively. Trimethoprim, norfloxacin, ofloxacin, and spectinomycin were detected in all matrices. The levels of PPCPs in water and sediment samples were relatively low. Spectinomycin, paracetamol, ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, and ibuprofen were the most frequently detected PPCPs in feeds. Ibuprofen and ketoprofen were widely detected in aquatic organisms, with average concentrations of 562 and 267 ng/g wet weight, respectively. The residual levels of PPCPs in shellfish such as ME (mussel, Mytilus edulis) and OS (oyster, Ostrea gigas) were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than those in other species including CA (topmouth culter, Culter alburnus) and EO (orbfish, Ephippus orbis). Correlation analysis indicated that the medicated feeds were a potential source of PPCPs in the mariculture areas of the PRD, but other anthropogenic sources should not be ignored. Based on maximum residue limits and acceptable daily intake, the health risks presented to humans via seafood consumption are negligible. However, as multiple antibiotics were frequently detected in the mariculture environment, aquatic organisms, and feeds, the induction and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance associated with antibiotic usage in aquaculture would be of great concern. It is necessary to establish a centralized management system and control the use of veterinary drugs in mariculture to protect the aquaculture environment and ensure the safety of seafood.
Comprehensive Investigation and Risk Assessment of Organic Contaminants in Yellow River Estuary Using Suspect and Nontarget Screening Strategies

Abstract:Contaminants of emerging concerns (CECs) include numerous chemicals that may pose known and unknown risks to the ecosystem, and identification and risk ranking of these compounds is essential for the environmental management. In this study, liquid and gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-QTOF-MS and GC-QTOF-MS) were used to characterize the occurrence of CECs in the surface water of the Yellow River Estuary (YRE). A total of 295 and 315 chemicals were identified by LC-QTOF-MS and GC-QTOF-MS, respectively. The occurrence of two compounds, erucamide and 2-phenylquinoline, was for the first time reported in the aquatic environment in YRE. The concentrations of 121 CECs, including 35 antibiotics, 49 pesticides and veterinary, 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and 21 phthalic acid esters were further quantified by target analysis, which showed the detection of 99 compounds in the surface water in the range of 7.07-4611.26 ng/L. Ecological risks of pollutants based on the risk quotient (RQ) method revealed that 13 pollutants posed ecological risks to the aquatic ecosystem (RQ > 1), and pesticides (n = 12) were the main risk contributors. Here, all CECs data sets were finally transformed and ranked in the framework of the toxicological priority index (ToxPi), and a total of 81 priority control pollutants were identified in the surface water of YRE. This study highlighted the necessity of suspect and nontarget screening for CECs in estuaries, and revealed the importance of localized contamination sources in urban and agricultural environment.
Risk Analysis of Veterinary Drug Residues in Aquatic Products in the Yangtze River Delta of China

Abstract:Abstract: Aquatic products are favored by people all over the world, but the potential quality and safety issues cannot be ignored. To determine the risk of veterinary drug residues in aquatic products in the Yangtze River Delta, this study used geographic information system method to analyze Chinese veterinary drugs in aquatic products in Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Anhui (Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomerations) from 2017 to 2019. A study of the spatial distribution pattern, hot spot detection and analysis, and spatiotemporal cluster analysis of the residual excess rate and detection rate showed a random spatial distribution in the overall excess rate and detection rate of veterinary drug residues in aquatic products from 2017 to 2019. The results of hot spot analysis and spatiotemporal cluster analysis showed that the rate of detection of veterinary drug residues and the rate of detection of residues in excess of regulatory standards were clustered. This study provides a scientific basis for food safety evaluation and risk management suggestions.
Distribution and Risk Assessment of 82 Pesticides in Jiulong River and Estuary in South China

Abstract:To discover the distribution and risk of pesticides in Jiulong River and estuary, the residues of 102 pesticides were analyzed in water, sediment and clam samples collected from 35 sites in different seasons. A total number of 82 pesticides were detected and the occurrence and the risk to human and fish were assessed. Most of pesticides with high frequency were medium or low toxic except for DDTs. DDTs were the significant contaminant and the widely used dicofol was the new source of DDTs. The spatial and seasonal variation of pesticide distribution was linked with the distribution of orchards and farmlands. Health risk from river water consumption was low (RQ < 0.1) while that from clam consumption was medium (RQ = 0.84). Pesticides in water posed great risk to fish and among the 76 water samples analyzed, 65 of them showed high risk (RQ > 1) and 6 showed medium risk (0.1 ≤ QR < 1). The single chemical posed high risk to fish included DDTs, triazophos, fenvalerate, bifenthrin and cyfluthrin, and those showed medium risk included dicofol, butachlor, isocarbophos, terbufos and cyhalothrin. There were 14 single pesticides detected with concentration above 100 ng L−1 in this study and the pesticide with the highest concentration was procymidone (3904 ng L−1). Further experiments illustrated that procymidone could disrupt the expression of vitellogenin in the estuarine fish even at environmental concentrations. DDTs, dicofol, triazophos, isocarbophos, terbufos, cyfluthrin, bifenthrin, fenvalerate, cyhalothrin, butachlor and procymidone have become the significant pesticides and should be considered in aquatic ecosystem risk management.

Abstract:Antibiotics are widely used in medical care, livestock production, and aquaculture. However, antibiotic pollution has attracted increasing global concerns due to their ecological risks after entering into environmental ecosystem via animal excretion, effulent from industrial and domestic sewage treatment facilities. In this study, 30 antibiotics were investigated in soils and irrigation rivers using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometer. This study evaluated the occurrence, source apportionment, and ecological risks of these target compounds in soils and irrigation rivers (i.e., sediments and water) of farmland system by using principal component analysis-multivariate linear regression (PCA-MLR) and risk quotients (RQ). The concentration range of antibiotics in soils, sediments, and water was 0.38-689.58 ng/g, 81.99-658.00 ng/g, and 134.45-1547.06 ng/L, respectively. In soils, the most abundant antibiotics were quinolones and antifungals with an average concentration of 30.00 ng/g and 7.69 ng/g, respectively, contributing to 40% of total antibiotics. Macrolides were the most frequently detected antibiotics in soils with an average concentration of 4.94 ng/g. In irrigation rivers, quinolones and tetracyclines, the most abundant antibiotics, accounted for 78% and 65% of antibiotics in water and sediments, respectively. Higher antibiotic contamination of irrigation water was primarily distributed in highly populated urban areas, while increasing antibiotic contamination of sediments and soils was particularly observed in rural areas. PCA-MLR analysis indicated that antibiotic contamination in soils was mainly ascribed to the irrigation of sewage-receiving water body and manure application of livestock and poultry farming, which cumulatively contributed to 76% of antibiotics. According to RQ assessment, quinolones in irrigation rivers posed high risk to algae and daphnia, contributing 85% and 72% to the mixture risk, respectively. In soils, macrolides, quinolones and sulfonamides were responsible for more than 90% to the mixture risk of antibiotics. Ultimately, these findings can improve our fundamental knowledge on contamination characteristics and source pathways towards risk management of antibiotics in farmland system.
